The double torsion testing method has been used to determine catastrophic and subcritical crack propagation parameters for pre-cracked specimens of Westerly granite and Black gabbro under a number of environmental conditions.The critical stress intensity factor for catastrophic crack propagation (fracture toughness) of granite and gabbro has been measured at temperatures from 20 to 400°C, in a vacuum. At 20°C, the fracture toughness of Westerly granite was 1.79 ± 0.02 MPa · m12, and for two blocks of Black gabbro it was 3.03 ± 0.08 MPa · m12 and 2.71 ± 0.15 MPa ·m12, respectively. These values are very close to those reported by other investigators for tests conducted in air of ambient humidity at room temperature. For both rocks, fracture toughness at first increased slightly, and then decreased steadily on raising the temperature above ambient conditions. This behaviour is explained in terms of the density and distribution of thermally induced microcracks, as determined by quantitative optical microscopy.Subcritical crack growth behaviour has been studied at temperatures up to 300°C, and under water vapour at pressures of 0.6 to 15 kPa. Both the load relaxation and incremental constant displacement rate forms of the double torsion testing method were utilised to generate stress intensity factor/crack velocity diagrams. Crack growth was measured over the velocity range 5 × 10?3 to 10?7 m · s?1. Increasing both temperature and water vapour pressure resulted in substantially higher crack growth rates. The overall effect of raising the temperature over the range studied here (20–300°C) was to increase the crack growth rate in granite and gabbro by ~5 and 7 orders of magnitude, respectively, at constant stress intensity factor and vapour pressure of water. For both rocks, the slopes of stress intensity factor/crack velocity curves were sensitive to changes in both temperature and water vapour pressure at low values of the latter parameter. Slopes fell substantially on raising the water vapour pressure, but were relatively insensitive to changes in temperature at these higher pressures. No subcritical crack growth limit was encountered.Estimates of the uncertainty in our experimental data are given. From the results of multiple load relaxation experiments on Westerly granite specimens, we estimate the uncertainty in position of stress intensity factor/crack velocity curves along the stress intensity axis to be c. 10% of the fracture toughness, and the uncertainty in slope of such curves to be c. 12%.Problems associated with the extrapolation of our experimental data to regions of higher effective confining pressure in the Earth's crust are discussed.  相似文献

An apparatus designed to determine the complex shear modulus of rock samples by forced torsion oscillations at high temperature and in the seismic frequency band 0.003–30 Hz is briefly described. Measurements were performed on natural dunite from Åheim (Norway) up to 1400°C and on polycrystalline forsterite up to 1500°C at 1 atm pressure. The two materials were chosen to study, by comparison, the effect of melt on the elasticity and anelasticity of mantle rocks.Between 1000 and 1200°C the absolute values of the shear modulus G are almost equal for both materials. Above 1200°C G for natural dunite decreases progressively with temperature and at 1400°C and 1 Hz reaches 13 of its value at 1100°C. In contrast, G of pure forsterite depends little on temperature. For petrological reasons, supported by simultaneous measurements of the electric resistivity, there is strong evidence that the decrease of G in dunite above 1200°C is due to melt from the lower melting components of the dunite. Based on different models estimates of the melt fraction are made.At high temperature, in both materials Q?1 is characterized by a monotonic decrease with frequency according to ω?α, with α ≈ 0.25. An apparent activation energy of 38±5 kcal mol?1 for forsterite and 48±8 kcal mol?1 for dunite was found with no significant change in the regime of partial melting. From this it is concluded that Q?1, even at partial melting, is dominated by solid state high temperature background absorption. There is no indication from these experiments for a constant-Q-band at low seismic frequencies or an increase of Q proportional to frequency as suggested by some seismologists. The present results are in good qualitative agreement with those for Young's modulus obtained previously by strain retardation experiments.  相似文献

Interdiffusion experiments were performed between Fe3O4 (single crystal) and Fe2.8Ti0.2O4 (powder), under self-buffering conditions (temperature range 600–1034°C), and for various oxygen potentials at 1400°C. Profiles of Fe and Ti were obtained by electronprobe microanalysis, and the interdiffusion coefficient D was calculated by the Boltzmann-Matano method. Low-temperature data at 3 mole% Ti could be described by D = (3.85?1.11+1.68) × 10?3exp(2.23 ± 0.04 eV/kT) cm2/s. An estimate is given for the time to interdiffuse 2μm at various temperatures, and the results compared with recent experiments.  相似文献

Neutral winds in the lower thermosphere (95–130km) measured during the March equinox period (1991–1992) by ground-based incoherent scatter radars at Arecibo (18°N), Millstone Hill (42.5°N), and Sondrestrom (67°N) and by the space-based wind imaging interferometer (WINDII) are compared and show overall good agreement but some differences. At 18°N, the wind field in the altitude region of 95–110km displays prevailing upward propagating diurnal tides with wavelengths of about 22km. The diurnal structure is affected by the semidiurnal tide resulting in regular minima separated by 11–12h. At altitudes above 110km, the diurnal tide dominant wind structure changes to the semidiurnal tide dominant structure as illustrated clearly by WINDII data with 24h coverage. Winds at 42.5°N and 67°N show similar structures in which winds at 105–115km are generally anti-sunward. Daytime ISR winds show prevailing upward propagating semidiurnal tides with wavelengths of 35–70km. Winds from WINDII reveal the existence of the in situ thermospheric diurnal tide with amplitudes comparable to those of the semidiurnal tide. The superimposition of the two tides result in a wind field stronger during daytime than during nighttime at mid- and high-latitudes. Geomagnetic influence on neutral winds is negligible at low- and mid-latitudes under solar quiet conditions, but is observed at high-latitudes, where wind vectors follow a clockwise one-cell pattern at altitudes above about 118km in geomagnetic coordinates. Most recent simulations for the three latitudes provided by the NCAR thermosphere/ionosphere/mesosphere electrodynamics general circulation model are compared to the observations. The results at low- and mid-latitudes agree well with the observed winds in both wind structures and magnitudes, and reveal details of wave transition. Simulations for high-latitudes are less satisfactory, and require further improvements.  相似文献

Sea mullet (Mugil cephalus) were exposed to aqueous suspensions of tech-DDT in seawater, salinity 29.5±0.5‰. The 48 h LC50 calculated from these static bioassays ranged from 0.042 to 0.056 mg l.?1 DDT. Median survival times were then estimated at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C using the upper level of the 48 h LC50 range of concentrations, i.e. 0.056 mg l.?1. Results indicated that an increase in temperature produced a decrease in toxicity. However, 25°C was the only temperature at which the increase in survival time was statistically significant. A review of experimental data for systems, pertaining to anhydrous fertile garnet-lherzolite shows strong convergence in the liquidus and solidus temperatures for the range 6.5–15 GPa. These can converge either to a common temperature or to temperatures which differ by only ~ 100°C. The major-element composition of magmas generated by even minor degrees of partial melting may be similar to the primordial bulk silicate Earth composition in an upper-mantle stratigraphic column extending over 160 km in depth.The convergence of the solidus and liquidus temperatures is a consequence of the highly variable dTdP of the fusion curves for minerals which crystallize in peridotite systems. In particular, dTdP for the forsterite fusion curve is much less than that for diopside and garnet. Whether or not the solidus and liquidus intersect, the liquidus mineralogy for undepleted garnet-lherzolite compositions changes from olivine at low pressures to pyroxene, garnet, or a complex pyroxene-garnet solid solution at pressures in excess of 10–15 GPa. Geochemical data for the earliest Archean komatiites are consistent with an upper-mantle phase diagram having garnet as a liquidus phase for garnet-lherzolite compositions at high pressures. All estimates of the anhydrous solidus and liquidus for the range 10–15 GPa are consistent with silicate liquid compressibility data, which indicate that olivine may be neutrally buoyant in ultramafic magmas at these pressures.  相似文献

A single-wavelength Rayleigh lidar system has been used to measure the temperatures in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere in the night in the altitude range from about 8 to 30km. The temperature derivation is based on an inversion algorithm of the pure Rayleigh backscatter. Calculations include the derivation of the air molecular concentration by an iterative method and the backscattered signals corrected by the background aerosol, which is now found to be low and stable. The uncertainties in estimating the temperature using this method are discussed in detail.The temperature profiles and the tropopause characteristics derived by using the lidar measurements are compared with the radiosonde data. Good agreement is found between these two measurements revealing the potential of this method. The comparison with radiosonde data shows that the lidar measured tropopause temperature is lower by 0.8±1.5K and the tropopause height is higher by 0.45±0.8km than the radiosonde measurements. The climatology of local tropopause (24.57°N,121.13°E) is briefly discussed in terms of a double tropopause formation and seasonal variations of the tropopause height and temperature.  相似文献

Tar balls, according to their densities, the prevailing temperature and their degree of weathering, are observed as floating, sinking, or are washed onto the beaches in the marine environment. To characterize the differences between floating and sunken tar balls, samples were analysed by IR, H-nmr, GC and GC/MS techniques. Hexane, benzene and methanol solubilities as well as densities were measured. The degree of weathering of the tar balls was investigated in terms of the losses of n-paraffinic/aromatic hydrocarbons. The ratio of paraffinic/aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations was calculated by IR and H-nmr whereas pristane/phytane ratios were estimated from GC measurements. The comparison of some high molecular weight, but minor, components between the major n-paraffins was obtained from GC/MS measurements.  相似文献

Tin dioxide (SnO2) in the rutile structure as starting material has been found to transform to the orthorhombic α-PbO2 structure (S.G. Pbcn) at about 155 kbar and 1000–1400°C when compressed in a diamond-anvil cell and heated by irradiation with a YAG laser. The lattice parameters at room temperature and 1 bar are ao = 4.719 ± 0.002, bo = 5.714 ± 0.002, and co = 5.228 ± 0.002 A?with Z = 4 for the orthorhombic form of SnO2, which is 1.5% more dense than the rutile form. Crystal-chemical arguments suggest that stishovite (SiO2) may also transform to the α-PbO2 structure at elevated pressure and temperature with an increase in zero-pressure density of about 2–3%. Mineral assemblages containing the orthorhombic SiO2 are unstable relative to those containing the perovskite MgSiO3 under lower-mantle conditions.  相似文献

The caustic of SKP is found at an epicentral distance ΔC = 129.5° for surface foci and at ΔC = 128.9° for foci at 400 km depth, by means of amplitude-distance graphs based upon short-period time-domain measurements. These results are essentially confirmed by long-period time-domain measurements of SKP as well as by frequency-domain studies, even though the spectra are less accurate for such determinations. The average period of SKP is T = 1.45 ± 0.45 sec from short-period records, significantly different from the corresponding PKP-period of 1.00 ± 0.31 sec. Likewise, the long-period averages of SKP = 10.8 ± 4.5 sec and of PKP = 7.7 ± 3.0 sec are significantly different from each other. A travel-time table of SKP1 is deduced, covering the epicentral distance range of 130–143° and the focal depth range of 100–700 km. All results are based on measurements on seismograms of the Swedish network of stations, deriving almost exclusively from earthquakes in the southwest Pacific area.  相似文献

Measurements of traveltimes and traveltime gradients for PKP phases recorded at the Warramunga seismic array from distances between 113° and 176° provide evidence for a two-layer transition zone in the earth's core. The basic data consist of paper recordings played out at 40 mm/sec from analog magnetic tape with amplitude gain control and narrow bandpass filters. Measured values of dT are perturbed by structure beneath the array and it is necessary to correct for this effect by an empirical approach. On the basis of the dT values and traveltimes, two precursor branches to PKPDF for Δ < 143° are identified consistently. These continue as branches intermediate to PKPDF and PKPAB for Δ > 145°. The corrected dT values of all phases are smoothed and used to derive a velocity model for the core. The preferred model includes two velocity discontinuities of less than 0.1 km/sec each in the core transition zone to generate the two additional PKP branches. Together with the velocity jump at the outer-inner core boundary, these discontinuities define two layers each a few hundred kilometers thick. It is argued that recent proposals concerning inhomogeneities at the base of the mantle or within the transition zone as the source of PKP precursors do not agree with our observations nor those of other researchers. Inhomogeneities are not excluded but are considered a secondary effect for PKP phases, the primary effect being due to two discontinuous velocity increases in the transition zone.  相似文献

The settling trends of 318 lunar mare craters are compared with predictions of numerical finite-element models in order to determine the creep response of the upper lunar mare crust. No settling is evident in craters smaller than 5 km in diameter. Settling rates of larger craters increase as function of crater size in a manner suggesting a non-linear lunar creep response corresponding to the power law ε? = 8.3 · 10 ?34 σ2 where ε&#x0301; is the strain rate and σ is the differential stress. However, the observed nonlinearity is probably an apparent nonlinearity resulting from the temperature induced viscosity decrease with depth due to a lunar crustal temperature gradient of 3° C/km and a creep activation energy of 20 kcal/mole. It is concluded that creep in the lunar medium is essentially Newtonian, and that the effective viscosity of the upper lunar mare crust is (1.6 ± 0.3) · 1025 poise.  相似文献

Annealing experiments in order to study grain boundary migration (GBM) were carried out at temperatures of 1513–1773 K from 10 min to 100 hours at atmospheric pressure. Grain growth due to GBM is observed in the formation of margins of neoblastic grains which display very different structures of dislocations from that of consumed porphyroclastic and initial neoblastic grains.The velocity of GBM obtained here is approximated to be c=gh in which k is 1.15×10?9 cm3 s?1, Q is the activation energy for GBM in olivine at 210±20 kJ mol?1 and ρ is the dislocation density of consumed olivine (cm?2.Inasmuch as GBM in static annealing reduces stored strain energy in olivines, it is one of the softening processes counteracting work-hardening by dislocation multiplication and tangling as well as dislocation annihilation. GBM-softening is dominant in low temperature annealing but in high temperatures dislocation recovery predominantly takes place.  相似文献

Pollack and Chapman have shown that the surface heat flow in continental regions is dependent not only on the earth's crust below the observation site, but also on the upper mantle there. Therefore heat flow can be used to investigate the role of the thermal conditions in the creation of the electrically conductive zones in both the crust and mantle.Empirical exponential formulas describe the depth to the conductivity increase in the crust corresponding to granitization, the depth to the conductive zone at the top of the asthenosphere (SLVZ), as a function of heat flow. Comparing the latter with temperature estimations in the asthenosphere it is concluded that partial melting of the upper mantle occurs only where q ? 42m W m?2 ? 1HFU.The depth to the conductivity increase corresponding to the mineralogic phase transition in the upper mantle is increased with high temperatures. Such a conductive zone shows that the maximum temperature difference between stable platform areas and active zones is about 1000°C.  相似文献

High-pressure phase relations in ZnSiO3 and Zn2SiO4 were investigated at about 1000°C and in the pressure range of 100–500 kbar, using a double-staged split-sphere type of high-pressure apparatus.Clinopyroxene-type ZnSiO3 transforms directly into a polymorph with the ilmenite structure at 120 kbar. The hexagonal unit cell dimensions of the ZnSiO3 ilmenite are determined to be a = 4.746 ± 0.001 A?and c = 13.755 ± 0.002 A? under ambient conditions.The following reactions are also recognized at about 1000°C:

The stabilities of silicate ilmenites, especially the absence of ilmenite of transition metal silicate composition, is discussed. It is pointed out that data on phase relations in zinc silicates may be informative for the consideration on those in magnesium silicates under very high pressures.
