Short exposure plates of Comet Arend-Roland (1956h) are examined and compared with similar photographs of Comet Bennett (1969i), Comet Halley (1910 II) and Comet Mrkos (1957d). It is found that the emission structure of the dust near the nucleus in the first comet is different from that in the others, although in all cases we have the formation of parabolic envelopes. Close resemblances with configurations described by Wurm and Mammano (1972) have been found for Comet Halley and Comet Mrkos.  相似文献

The HELIOS A and B zodiacal light photometers can be used to view comets as they pass the spacecraft. Because the HELIOS spacecraft orbit the Sun on their own, and are generally far from Earth, the spacecraft allow us to view comets from a different perspective than normally available. Comet West (1976VI) passed through perihelion on February 25, 1976. The comet crossed the HELIOS A and B spacecraft zodiacal light photometer fields of view, allowing them to record the brightness, polarization and color of the comet. Data from the U, B and V photometers showed a distinct blueing followed by a slight reddening corresponding to the ion and dust tails, respectively, entering the field of view of each photometer sector. The extent of the tail of Comet West was far greater seen from the HELIOS spacecraft than seen from Earth, even taking into account their generally closer viewing perspective. As Comet West traveled away from the Sun, it was observed in the zodiacal light photometer fields of view at a solar distance of more than 1.4 AU. The zodiacal light photometers also viewed Comet Meier (1978XXI). Comet Meier is far more compact than Comet West, extremely blue and unlike Comet West showed no significant dust tail. The interplanetary medium is observed to a level of the variations in the brightness of the electron-scattering component near Comet West. A brightness bump present in the data before the comet reached some photometer positions can be shown to approximately form a parabolic shape sunward and ahead of the orbital motion of the Comet West nucleus. We presume that this bump is evidence of the position of the cometary atmosphere or an enhancement of the ambient interplanetary medium ahead of the comet motion. The brightness bump in terms of density generally corresponds to a density enhancement of the ambient medium by a few times in the vicinity of the comet. When compared with Comet Halley and couched in terms of the shock stand-off distance, the distance of this brightness increase from the nucleus implies a neutral gas production rate of approximately 2.5 times that of Halley. Observed irregular oscillations of the ion tail axis in comets have by some authors been brought in connection with changes in the flow conditions in the solar wind. We are defending in this paper — by arguments resting on well known observations — the conception that these oscillations are caused by slight variations in the emission conditions for the ions at their source which has always its place close to the cometary nucleus. A complete renovation of the innermost tail part up to a length of a few million km (called by Hoffmeister the primary tail) and defining the tail axis can take place within a few to several hours. Shifts of this axis are becoming visible when the new tail rays finish their closure along another direction than the earlier ones.The not so rarely observed jumps in the direction of the primary tail lead in connection with the large time scale — of about 24h — for a complete closure of a ray system from an individual ion out-break to the conclusion that we should expect occasionally the existence of two (or even more) different axis to which tail rays make their closure. Some photographs of Comet Bennett 1969i seem to show such double axis.  相似文献

A class of comets, of which Comet Kohoutek (1973f) is typical, show total as well as monochromatic brightness asymmetries about perihelion. They are fainter after perihelion than before at the same heliocentric distance. A model of the cometary nucleus consisting of a growing non-volatile dust mantle surrounding a volatile icy core is used to discuss this phenomenon.Numerical results are obtained for Comet Kohoutek (1973f). It is found that dust mantles of thickness in the range of 10–75 cm can be grown by perihelion passage for various values of the thermal conductivity of the dust if there is no substantial dust blow-off by the sublimating volatiles.The thermal conductivity of the dust mantle is quite small and is dominated by radiative conductivity for heliocentric distances 2 AU. Since the radiative conductivity is larger for larger grain size, the thickest mantle corresponds to coarsest matrix.The strong insulation provided by the growing dust layer progressively suppresses the surface temperature of the volatile core below its quasi-equilibrium value had there been no mantle. As a consequence the production rate of the parent-molecules as well as the monochromatic brightness of their daughter products increases less steeply than in the mantleless case, as the comet approaches perihelion. Furthermore, there are significant monochromatic brightness asymmetries about perihelion, which are enhanced if there is a greater dust blow-off before perihelion than after, as is believed to be the case with Comet Kohoutek (1973f). Estimates of this asymmetry of 1 × 2 magnitudes for the OH brightness at a heliocentric distance × 1 AU are consistent with the rather limited observations.  相似文献

The observed variation of reddening as function of the heliocentric distance and the spatial variation of reddening within the coma of Comet West in the visual wavelength range have been considered to infer the properties of the cometary dust grains. The relevant model incorporates the variation in the size distribution function as well as the composition of the spherical grains. The real part of the complex index of refraction (m = m – im) is chosen such thatm = 1.6. The imaginary part is required to vary from m = 0.2 to 0.05 over the wavelength range 0.4 to 0.7 m. This choice of refractive index corresponds to dirty silicate grains. As a by-product, the model also satisfies the observed polarization and albedo for the Comet West.  相似文献

Charged dust grains of radiia3×10–6 cm could be a help in understanding the production of primary cosmic ray particles in extensive air showers (EAS). A two-stage acceleration mechanism is proposed in order to accelerate dust grains up to relativistic energy. In the first stage, dust grains acquire suprathermal energy (Suprathermal Grains) by the Fermi mechanism. In the second stage, suprathermal grains attain relativistic energy by the Alfvén magnetic pumping mechanism yielding the primary cosmic ray particles. Ionization loss has been considered to be a most important loss mechanism for charged dust grains in a fully ionized medium. It is suggested that graphite dust grains of intergalactic origin may be responsible for high energy (>1020 eV) cosmic rays.  相似文献

In combination with the authors' previous observation about the splitting of Comet Halley in March 1986,the events involving the sharp,straight feature in the antisolar direction observed in the head of Cornet halley in 1910 (such as those occurring on May 14,25 and 31,and June 2) are redis-cussed.The analysis leads to the following scenario;When comet Halley explodes and splits,a fragment jettisoned or thrown off from the nucleus will,after moving in the direction of its tail,develop into a mini-comet.Although not weel developed or permanent,it has its own plasma tail and,sometimes,a dust tail.If Bobrovnikoff's definition of a secondary nucleus is assumed,then the fragment should be considered as a real secondary nucleus.It seems that the current idea of a tailward jet suggested by Sekanina and Larson is a wrong explanation for the plasma tail of a mini-comet and hence the rotation period of 52-53h for Comet Halley is doubtful.  相似文献

Spectral scans of the head of periodic Comet Halley (1982i) have been presented in the optical region (3200–7000 Å) for six nights. Emission features due to NH, CN, CH, C3, C2 and NH2 molecules have been identified. It is found that the comet exhibits night-to-night variation of emission bands. The large-scale post-perihelion evolution of the dust tail in Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale–Bopp) was monitored with Schmidt telescope exposures at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) La Silla in Chile. In early October 1997 signatures of a peculiar dust-tail appeared as straight, but diffuse extensions in the northern and southern coma hemisphere. With the approach of the Earth to the orbital plane of the comet a needle-like anti-tail with a similar, but much longer counterpart in the region of the normal dust tail formed. In early January 1998, i.e., close to the plane crossing, the anti-tail pointed towards position angle 190° and was at least 0.4°long, its counter part extended over more than 5° into oppositedirection. During February and March 1998 the position angles of both features increased by more than 40$°– while their appearance became shorter, wider and more diffuse again. Thepeculiar dust tail was last observed in April 1998.Modeling of the dust tail dynamics shows that the anti-tail andpeculiar tail phenomenon observed is formed by a neck-line structureof heavy dust grains released around perihelion passage. Two scenariiare introduced to explain the extension of the anti-tail feature:(1) grains ejected about 20 days post-perihelion with a initial velocity of 170 m/s in radial direction towards the Sun and(2) grains released about 60–80 days before perihelion at a speed of70m/s into the orbital plane and against the motion directionof the comet. The out-of-plane velocity component of the dust wasless than 25 m/s. Both scenarios require dust of < 0.001to be involved, i.e., grains of at least mm-size. The rather symmetric shading of the neck-line structure before and after passage of theEarth through the orbital plane of the comet in early January 1998 supports the idea that dust of both scenarii may have contributed to the phenomenon.  相似文献

Two low-energy ( 1 MeV) solar proton events which display a gradual intensity increase to a maximum near the time of an SSC, followed by an abrupt, large decrease, are interpreted in terms of a population of cosmic rays which are swept ahead of an interplanetary shock wave. A model which describes the variation with time of intensity and anisotropy at the Earth is developed using a Monte Carlo technique which traces the histories of particles released impulsively at the Sun. A good fit to each of the profiles observed at 0.6 to 0.9 MeV proton energies is obtained with a diffusion coefficient 2 × 1020 cm2 s) = 13.46 - 2.99 sin21 and a near perfect shock reflector.Now at University of California, LASL, Los Alamos, New Mexico.  相似文献

The 5–30 m spectrum of Comet P/Halley is modelled for various grain compositions on the basis of an observationally determined distribution of grain sizes. We compute the distribution function of grain temperatures and fluxes arising from (1) a mineral grain model, and (2) an organic grain model comprised of a diatom/POM mixture. We present the results of a study of circumstellar dust envelopes of 36 stars of early(O-B-A) types in the directions of the associations Cas OB1, Cas OB2, Per OB1, and Ori OB1. We determine the absorption at 1640 Å, the linear radius of the dust envelopes, the mean value of the coefficient k, and the masses of the envelopes. On a number of Comet Halley 1910 photographs of short exposures (Helwan material) a substructure in dust emission in the inner coma becomes detectable. Narrow and diffuse dust streamers leave the nucleus area within a smaller or larger cone opened in the direction to the Sun. On plates with longer exposures these structures merge together in a parabolic envelope. Structures of the type I tail are not visible for lower heliocentric distances (r<1) in the inner coma; however, occasionally CN, C2 eject circular emission areas.The present note represents a preliminary account of a larger publication which will contain a great number of details and also many photographic reproductions. We present drift curves through the head and tail of Comet Bennett at λλ5892 (Na) and 6110 Å (continuum) made on 30.5 March 1970 with a 14 arc-sec entrance diaphragm. Quantitative photometry of the sodium emission lines radial profile show a maximum intensity peak offset some 7000 km to the Sun-ward direction of the continuum (dust) maximum. Both the dust and Na distributions on the tail side of Comet Bennett show nearly exponential decays in emission away from the Sun. The interpretation of these data is briefly discussed.  相似文献

A new concept —the Paradox of Nebula IC4997 — is the main subject of the present article. The essence of this paradox arises when the variations of the intensities of forbidden lines 4363 [Oiii] andN 1+N 2 [Oiii] take place not in unison as is predicted by the classical theory. An attempt is made to solve this paradox, suggesting the possibility both of spontaneous appearance of relativistic electrons in the nebula and the generation of so-calledtransition radiation as a result of electrodynamic interaction of these electrons with dust particles in nebula. The parameters of relativistic electrons and power of transition radiation are obtained. The problems which need further examination are also enumerated.  相似文献

Emission fluxes of CN, C2 and C3 carbon-bearing molecular species observed in the coma of comets Bennett (1969i 1970II), West (1975n 1976VI), P Halley (1982i), Hartley-Good (19851) and Bradfield (1987s) are analysed in the framework of Haser model. CN, C2 and C3 production rates are determined using recently derived fluorescence efficiencies. The dependence of CN, C2 and C3 production rates on the heliocentric distance and the possible correlations among these radicals is studied and briefly discussed.  相似文献

On the basis of continuum energy distributions in the wavelength region 3200–11 000 Å, effective temperature for 14 Wolf-Rayet stars are estimated by comparing with Kurucz (1979) model atmospheres.
