The authors conducted a Rn222 survey in wells of the Larderello geothermal field (Italy) and observed considerable variations in concentrations. Simple models show that flow-rate plays an important part in the Rn222 content of each well, as it directly affects the fluid transit time in the reservoirs. Rn222 has been sampled from two wells of the Serrazzano area during flow-rate drawdown tests. The apparent volume of the steam reservoir of each of these two wells has been estimated from the Rn222 concentration versus flow-rate curves.List of symbols Q Flow-rate (kg h–1) - Decay constant of Rn222 (=7.553×10–3 h–1) - Porosity of the reservoir (volume of fluid/volume of rock) - 1 Density of the fluid in the reservoir (kg m–3) - 2 Density of the rock in the reservoir (kg m–3) - M Stationary mass of fluid filling the reservoir (kg). - E Emanating power of the rock in the reservoir (nCi kg rock –1 h–1). - P Production rate of Rn222 in the reservoir: number of atoms of Rn222 (divided by 1.764×107) transferred by the rock to the mass unit of fluid per unit time (nCi kg fluid –1 h–1). - N Specific concentration of Rn222 in the fluid (nCi kg–1) - Characteristic time of the steam reservoir at maximum flow-rate (=M/Q)  相似文献

Summary Spectrometric experiments performed, in November 1976, within the framework of the Latitude Survey Mission on board the NASA Convair 990 from Ames Research Center are briefly deseribed. The results presented concern odd nitrogen molecules, HCl and water vapor. In terms of vertical column density, HNO3 is predominant over NO+NO2 at all latitudes higher than 40 degrees. A seasonal variation of NO2 abundance is observed, with larger values in the summer hemisphere at high latitude. The mean zenith column density of HCl above 11 km is 1.5×1015 mol.cm–2, with no evidence for any seasonal or climatic variation. Local number densities as high as 1.4×1010 mol.cm–3 for HNO3 and 5.4×1014 mol.cm–3 for water vapor have been measured during the same flight near 11 km.  相似文献

Geo-scientific planetary research of the last 25 years has revealed the global structure and evolution of the terrestrial planets Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. The evolution of the terrestrial bodies involves a differentiation into heavy metallic cores, Fe-and Mg-rich silicate mantles and light Ca, Al-rich silicate crusts early in the history of the solar system. Magnetic measurements yield a weak dipole field for Mercury, a very weak field (and local anomalies) for the Moon and no measurable field for Venus and mars. Seismic studies of the Moon show a crust-mantle boundary at an average depth of 60 km for the front side, P- and S-wave velocities around 8 respectively 4.5 km s–1 in the mantle and a considerable S-wave attenuation below a depth of 1000 km. Satellite gravity permits the study of lateral density variations in the lithosphere. Additional contributions come from photogeology, orbital particle, x-and -ray measurements, radar and petrology. The cratered surfaces of the smaller bodies Moon and Mercury have been mainly shaped by meteorite impacts followed by a period of volcanic flows into the impact basins until about 3×109 yr before present. Mars in addition shows a more developed surface. Its northern half is dominated by subsidence and younger volcanic flows. It even shows a graben system (rift) in the equatorial region. Large channels and relics of permafrost attest the role of water for the erosional history. Venus, the most developed body except Earth, shows many indications of volcanism, grabens (rifts) and at least at northern latitudes collisional belts, i.e. mountain ranges, suggesting a limited plate tectonic process with a possible shallow subduction.List of Symbols and Abbreviations a=R e mean equatorial radius (km) - A(r, t) heat production by radioactive elements (W m–3) - A, B equatorial moments of inertia - b polar radius (km) - complex amplitude of bathymetry in the wave number (K) domain (m) - C polar moment of inertia - C Fe moment of inertia of metallic core - C Si moment of inertia of silicate mantle - C p heat capacity at constant pressure (JK–1 mole) - C nm,J nm,S nm harmonic coefficients of degreen and orderm - C/(MR e 2 ) factor of moment of inertia - d distance (km) - d nondimensional radius of disc load of elastic bending model - D diameter of crater (km) - D flexural rigidity (dyn cm) - E Young modulus (dyn cm–2) - E maximum strain energy - E energy loss during time interval t - f frequency (Hz) - f flattening - F magnetic field strength (Oe) (1 Oe=79.58A m–1) - g acceleration or gravity (cms–2) or (mGal) (1mGal=10–3cms–2) - mean acceleration - g e equatorial surface gravity - complex amplitude of gravity anomaly in the wave number (K) domain - g free air gravity anomaly (FAA) - g Bouguer gravity anomaly - g t gravity attraction of the topography - G gravitational constant,G=6.67×10–11 m3kg–1s–2 - GM planetocentric gravitational constant - h relation of centrifugal acceleration (2 R e ) to surface acceleration (g e ) at the equator - J magnetic flux density (magnetic field) (T) (1T=109 nT=109 =104G (Gauss)) - J 2 oblateness - J nm seeC nm - k (0) (zero) pressure bulk modulus (Pa) (Pascal, 1 Pa=1 Nm–2) - K wave number (km–1) - K * thermal conductivity (Jm–1s–1K–1) - L thickness of elastic lithosphere (km) - M mas of planet (kg) - M Fe mass of metallic core - M Si mass of silicate mantle - M(r) fractional mass of planet with fractional radiusr - m magnetic dipole moment (Am2) (1Am2=103Gcm3) - m b body wave magnitude - N crater frequency (km–2) - N(D) cumulative number of cumulative frequency of craters with diameters D - P pressure (Pa) (1Pa=1Nm–2=10–5 bar) - P z vertical (lithostatic) stress, see also z (Pa) - P n m (cos) Legendre polynomial - q surface load (dyn cm–2) - Q seismic quality factor, 2E/E - Q s ,Q p seismic quality factor derived from seismic S-and P-waves - R=R 0 mean radius of the planet (km) (2a+b)/3 - R e =a mean equatorial radius of the planet - r distance from the center of the planet (fractional radius) - r Fe radius of metallic core - S nm seeC nm - t time and age in a (years), d (days), h (hours), min (minutes), s (seconds) - T mean crustal thickness from Airy isostatic gravity models (km) - T temperature (°C or K) (0°C=273.15K) - T m solidus temperature - T sideral period of rotation in d (days), h (hours), min (minutes), s (seconds), =2/T - U external potential field of gravity of a planet - V volume of planet - V p ,V s compressional (P), shear (S) wave velocity, respectively (kms–1) - w deflection of lithosphere from elastic bending models (km) - z, Z depth (km) - z (K) admittance function (mGal m–1) - thermal expansion (°C–1) - viscosity (poise) (1 poise=1gcm–1s–1) - co-latitude (90°-) - longitude - Poisson ratio - density (g cm–3) - mean density - 0 zero pressure density - m , Si average density of silicate mantle (fluid interior) - average density of metallic core - t , top density of the topography - density difference between crustal and mantle material - electrical conductivity (–1 m–1) - r , radial and azimuthal surface stress of axisymmetric load (Pa) - z vertical (lithostatic) stress (seeP z ) - II second invariant of stress deviation tensor - latitude - angular velocity of a planet (=2/T) - ages in years (a), generally 0 years is present - B.P. before present - FAA Free Air Gravity Anomaly (see g - HFT High Frequency Teleseismic event - LTP Lunar Transient Phenomenon - LOS Line-Of-Sight - NRM Natural Remanent Magnetization Contribution No. 309, Institut für Geophysik der Universität, Kiel, F.R.G.  相似文献

A picrite lava (22 wt% MgO; 35 vol.% ol) along the western shore of the1.3–1.4 Ma Kahoolawe tholeiitic shield, Hawaii, contains small xenoliths of harzburgite, lherzolite, norite, and wehrlite. The various rock types have textures where either orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, or plagioclase is in a poikilitic relationship with olivine. The Mg#s of the olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene in this xenolith suite range between 86 and 82; spinel Mg#s range from 60 to 49, and plagioclase is An75–80. A 87Sr/86Sr ratio for one ol-norite xenolith is 0.70444. In comparison, the host picrite has olivine phenocrysts with an average Mg# of 86.2 (range 87.5–84.5), and a whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.70426. Textural and isotopic information together with mineral compositions indicate that the xenoliths are related to Kahoolawe tholeiitic magmatism, but are not crystallization products of the magma represented by their host picrite. Rather, the xenoliths are crystalline products of earlier primitive liquids (FeO/MgO ranging 1 to 1.3) at 5–9 kbar in the cumulate environment of a magma reservoir or conduit system. The presence of ultramafic xenoliths in picrite but not in typical Kahoolawe tholeiitic lava (6–9 wt% MgO) is consistent with replenishment of reservoirs by dense Mg-rich magma emplaced beneath resident, less dense tholeiitic magma. Mg-rich magmas have proximity to reservoir cumulate zones and are therefore more likely than fractionated residual liquids to entrain fragments of cumulate rock.  相似文献

Regular surveys of bottom water chemistry (SiO2, O2, Fe, Mn) have been carried from 1978 to 1986 in the deepest 30 m of Lake Léman (max. depth 309 m) including interface waters sampled with a Jenkins Mortimer corer. When compared to normal chemical gradients near bottom, i.e. O2 decrease and SiO2 increase, three types of anomalies (lens, interface, and behaviour) have been observed on O2 and SiO2, the most sensitive chemical species. These anomalies were found throughout the year, in several stations of the deepest part of the lake and even along the slope of the lake basin. Major anomalies (O2 + 3 to 10 mg ·l–1; SiO2 -1 to 2 mg·l–1) were generally found at the sediment water interface and may extend 10–20 m above the sediment and last 10 weeks. Others marked lens anomalies could be observed for 3 to 4 months. Several mechanisms are probably responsible for this injection of surface waters along the lake slope (accumulation of turbid water on lake banks after severe windstorms; river density currents due to temperature and/or turbidity difference with lake waters). These water-inputs do not represent important volumes ( 1% total lake volume) but, when occuring at the interface, they ensure a sufficient oxygen level to prevent diffusion of phosphate and ammonia from pore waters when winter lake overturns do not reach bottom layers (from 1972 to 1980). Complete overturns, as observed in 1980/81, are connected with major interface anomalies (bottom O2 moves up from 2 to 10 mg·l–1) occuring before surface mixing reaches the deepest layers.  相似文献

Summary The residues of cloud droplets collected at the summit of a mountain were examined with an electron microscope and their materials were identified with the aid of micro-electron-diffraction method. About 30% of nuclei of cloud droplets larger than 5 in radius were mainly composed of sodium chloride and their masses were 10–1210–13 gr. We also found salt particles in snow crystals. Some discussions are made about the process of the capture of these particles by snow crystals.  相似文献

Summary In adjusting measured values in sets A(r*), v(r*) and f(r*) by means of a power function in the form of P=Kr* a region of discontinuity of the approximating curves was found at the distance r*11.5 m kg –1/3. It is assumed that this discontinuity was caused by the varying character of the source of seismic waves. For scaled distances r*>11.5 m kg –1/3 the explosion was considered to be a spherical source from the point of view of the charge geometry and of the distance of the pick-up from the centre of the charge, whereas if r*<11.5 m kg –1/3 the explosion in the borehole had the character of a cylindrical source. The difference of the two types of sources was reflected in the exponent with both the functions A(r*) and v(r*), so that for r*>11.5 m kg –1/3 –4.0 and–2.4, and for r*<11.5 m kg –1/3 –2.5 and–1.5. For the same intervals of scaled distance in the set f(r*)1.4 and1.2.  相似文献

Radio waves undergo angular scattering when they propagate through a plasma with fluctuating density. We show how the angular scattering coefficient can be calculated as a function of the frequency spectrum of the local density fluctuations. In the Earths magnetosheath, the ISEE 1–2 propagation experiment measured the spectral power of the density fluctuations for periods in the range 300 to 1 s, which produce most of the scattering. The resultant local angular scattering coefficient can then be calculated for the first time with realistic density fluctuation spectra, which are neither Gaussian nor power laws. We present results on the variation of the local angular scattering coefficient during two crossings of the dayside magnetosheath, from the quasi-perpendicular bow shock to the magnetopause. For a radio wave at twice the local electron plasma frequency, the scattering coefficient in the major part of the magnetosheath is b(2fp) 0.5–4 × 10–9 rad2/m. The scattering coefficient is about ten times stronger in a thin sheet (0.1 to IRE) just downstream of the shock ramp, and close to the magnetopause.  相似文献

A tripod-mounted correlation spectrometer was used to measure SO2 emissions from Pu`u `O`o vent, mid-ERZ, Kilauea, Hawaii between Episodes 33 and 34 (June 13 to July 6, 1985). In 24 repose days, 906 measurements were collected, averaging 38 determinations/day. Measurements reflect 13% of the total 576 hours of the repose and 42% of the bright daylight hours. The average SO2 emission for the 24-day repose interval is 167±83 t/d, a total of 4000 tonnes emitted for the entire repose. The large standard deviation reflects the puffing character of the plume. The overall rate of SO2 degassing gently decreased with a zero-intercept of 44–58 days and was interrupted by two positive peaks. The data are consistent with the gas emanating from a cylindrical conduit of 50 meter diameter and a length of 1700 meters which degasses about 50% of its SO2 during 24 days. This is in support of the Pu'u `O`o model of Greenland et al. (1987). 36 hours before the onset of Episode 34 (July 5–6, 1985), elevated SO2 emissions were detected while the magma column was extremely active ultimately spilling over during dome fountaining. A mid-repose anomaly of SO2 emission (June 21–22, 1985) occurs two days before a sudden increase in the rate of summit inflation (on June 24, 1985), suggesting magma was simultaneously being injected in both the ERZ and summit reservoir until July 24 when it was channelled only to the summit reservoir. This implies degassing magma is sensitive to perturbations within the rift zone conduit system and may at times reflect these disturbances. Periods of 7–45 min are detected in the daily SO2 emissions, which possibly reflect timing of convective overturn in the cylindrical magma body. If the 33–34 repose interval is considered representative of other repose periods, the ERZ reposes of Jan 1983–Jan 1986 ERZ activity, contributed 1.6 × 105 tonnes of SO2 to the atmosphere. Including summit fuming from non-eruptive fumaroles (2.7 × 105 tonnes SO2); 28% of the total SO2 budget from Kilauea between Jan 1983 to Jan 1986 was contributed by quiescent degassing, and the remainder was released during explosive fountaining episodes.  相似文献

A relatively simple indentation technique for the rapid measurement of fracture surface energy, , of small samples is described. The reliability of this technique is assessed by testing soda-lime glass for which there are good independent fracture mechanics determinations of fracture surface energy. The indentation technique gives a value for of 4.33 J m–2 which compares favourably with the accepted value of 3.8 J m–2. Fracture surface energies of the {010} and {001} cleavage planes of single crystal olivine (modal composition Fo88Fa12) are then determined and compared with theoretical estimates of the thermodynamic surface energy, , calculated from atomistic parameters ( is equal to in the absence of dissipative processes during crack extension). The experimental values for {010} and {001} are respectively 0.98 J m–2 and 1.26 J m–2. The calculated values of {010} and {001} are respectively in the range from 0.37 J m–2 to 8.63 J m–2 and 12.06 J m–2. The particular advantages of the indentation technique for the study of the fracture surface energies of geological materials are outlined.  相似文献

Summary The energy of seismic waves (i.e. seismic energy) of 60 selected events of the 1985/86 West-Bohemian swarm is determined by time integrating records. The energies lie in the interval 30 × 103 – 0·4 × 109 J for events of magnitude 0·74 – 2·59. Problems of the resultant reliability and estimation of errors are discussed. A study of the relations of seismic energy versus magnitude, of the scalar seismic moment and the source radius has shown that the processed data fit theoretical formulas in general, but individual events display scatters as large as an order of magnitude. Rather small values of the stress-drop ( = 0·01 – 0·10 MPa) are observed.Dedicated to the Memory of Professor Karel P  相似文献

Protozoan communities developed in laboratory microecosystems were used to evaluate the toxic effects of lead ion. The lead was added as lead acetate in different concentrations (50 g · l–1, 20 g · l–1, 10 g · l–1 and 1 g · l–1). The protozoans were taxonomically identified and classified into functional groups according to their common nutritional type. The population dynamics of protozoa has been studied. In the control the most frequent groups were bacterivore-detritivores and photosynthetics (more than 75% of abundance). Noticeable lead effects were observed after 24 hours of exposure to metal in all fractions. In general, the lead caused reductions in the number taxa, in total protozoan abundance and in protozoan biomass. The diversity values decreased in more than two nep respect to control in the different fractions. At the end of assay, the protozoan communities structure was simplified in the fractions with lead and some species of little flagellates were dominant. The information provided by this microecosystems of protozoan community was more complex than the one provided by single-species bioassays. Community protozoan bioassays may give more information about the toxic effects to compare with actual ecosystems.  相似文献

The distribution of the metal ions Zn and Pb between particulate and dissolved phase in river Glatt was studied by field measurements and compared with calculated simulations, using parameters obtained by adsorption experiments with natural suspended particulate material. Differences in distribution coefficients obtained from field data are observed in function of the sampling locations and of the composition of the particulate matter.Experiments in which metal ion solutions are titrated with a suspension of natural particles and analyzed by anodic stripping voltammetry, are interpreted in terms of binding capacities and conditional stability constants of Zn and Pb with the surface sites. Binding constants of a particular metal ion varied very little for all samples. We obtained mean values for the conditional average complex formation constants at pH 8 of: logcond K Pb = 9.44 ± 0.18 and logcond K Zn = 8.17 ± 0.20. At this pH, binding capacities of 5 10–3 – 1.7 10–2 mol/kg of particles were obtained for samples collected at different locations and times; organic material, iron and manganese oxides are considered to be the main components that control the adsorption to the particles.Distribution coefficients are calculated from the experimentally obtained binding capacities and conditional stability constants. Calculated distribution coefficients for Zn agree with those obtained from the field data and are not very sensitive to changes in the composition of the solution. Good agreement was obtained for lead as well; for some samples it was important to take two types of sites with different affinity into consideration.  相似文献

Among the series of eruptions at Miyakejima volcano in 2000, the largest summit explosion occurred on 18 August 2000. During this explosion, vesiculated bombs and lapilli having cauliflower-like shapes were ejected as essential products. Petrological observation and chemical analyses of the essential ejecta and melt inclusions were carried out in order to investigate magma ascent and eruption processes. SEM images indicate that the essential bombs and lapilli have similar textures, which have many tiny bubbles, crystal-rich and glass-poor groundmass and microphenocrysts of plagioclase, augite and olivine. Black ash particles, which compose 40% of the air-fall ash from the explosion, also have similar textures to the essential bombs. Whole-rock analyses show that the chemical composition of all essential ejecta is basaltic (SiO2=51–52 wt%). Chemical analyses of melt inclusions in plagioclase and olivine phenocrysts indicate that melt in the magma had 0.9–1.9 wt% H2O, <0.011 wt% CO2, 0.04–0.17 wt% S and 0.06–0.1 wt% Cl. The variation in volatile content suggests degassing of the magma during ascent up to a depth of about 1 km. The ratio of H2O and S content of melt inclusions is similar to that of volcanic gas, which has been intensely and continuously emitted from the summit since the end of August 2000, indicating that the 18 August magma is the source of the gas emission. Based on the volatile content of the melt inclusions and the volcanic gas composition, the initial bulk volatile content of the magma was estimated to be 1.6–1.9 wt% H2O, 0.08–0.1 wt% CO2, 0.11–0.17 wt% S and 0.06–0.07 wt% Cl. The basaltic magma ascended from a deeper chamber (10 km) due to decrease in magma density caused by volatile exsolution with pressure decrease. The highly vesiculated magma, which had at least 30 vol% bubbles, may have come into contact with ground water at sea level causing the large explosion of 18 August 2000.Editorial responsibility: S. Physical, chemical and isotopic parameters were measured in fumaroles at the Vulcano crater and in drowned fumaroles near the beach. The data were used to define boundary conditions for possible conceptual models of the system.Crater fumaroles: time variations of CO2 and SO2 concentrations indicate mixing of saline gas-rich water with local fresh water. Cl/Br ratios of 300– 400 favour sea-water as a major source for Cl, Brand part of the water in the fumaroles. Cl concentrations and D values revealed, independently, amixing of 0.75 sea-water with 0.25 local freshwaterin furmarole F-5 during September 1982.Patterns of parameter correlation and mass balances reveal that CO2, S, NH3 and B originate from sources other than sea water. The CO2 value of 13C = – 2%o favours, at least partial, origin from decomposition of sedimentary rocks rather than mantle-derived material. Radiogenic4He(1.3 × lO–3 ccSTP/g water) and radiogenic40Ar(10.6 × 10–4 ccSTP/g water) are observed, (4He/40Ar)radiogenic = 1.2, well in the range of values observed in geothermal systems.Drowned fumaroles: strongly bubbling gas at a pond and at the beachappears to have the same origin and initial compositionas the crater fumaroles (2 km away). The fumarolic gas is modified by depletion of the reactive gases, caused by dissolution in shallow-water. Atmospheric Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe are addeden route, some radiogenic He and Ar are maintained. The Vulcano system seems to be strongly influenced by the contribution of sea-water and decomposition of sedimentary rocks. Evidence of magmatic contributions is mainly derived from heat.  相似文献

Olivine flow mechanisms at 8 GPa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The mechanisms responsible for high-temperature olivine deformation are investigated at a pressure of 8 GPa and temperatures up to 1780 K. San Carlos olivine specimens of different average grain sizes (0.5 and 5 μm) were deformed simultaneously between hard-alumina pistons during relaxation experiments. These experiments are carried out in a multi-anvil high-pressure apparatus coupled with synchrotron X-ray radiation. The different grain-size specimens experienced identical P-T-stress condition at any given time. A new method for measuring strains and strain rates (≥10−6 s−1) of specimens at high pressure is documented. This method uses time-resolved in situ X-ray imaging and an image-analysis computation. The microstructures of run products, recovered after being quenched at different temperatures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We find that high-temperature olivine flow is grain-size insensitive at 8 GPa, which suggests that dislocation creep dominates olivine deformation at high pressure. This result is confirmed by the TEM investigation of our deformed specimens in which we find evidences of the activation of olivine dislocation slip systems. Specimen microstructures are consistent with dynamic recrystallization as an assisting process in olivine deformation during the high-pressure experiments. Extrapolation of our results to the low stress level and large grain size expected in the mantle suggests that dislocation creep assisted by dynamic recrystallization may also dominate natural olivine deformation in the upper mantle.  相似文献

A suite of 16 basanitic volcanic rocks, representing all stages in the evolution of the La Breña — El Jagüey (LBEJ) Maar Complex, has been studied petrographically and analyzed for mineral compositions and whole-rock major element, trace element, and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic compositions. Two feldspathic granulite xenoliths were also studied as possible lower-crustal contaminants to the LBEJ magmas. The volcanic rocks contain the stable minerals olivine, plagioclase, augite, and titanomagnetite±ilmenite, plus a diverse suite of xenocrusts derived from disaggregation of mantle xenoliths of spinel lherzolite (olivine, orthopyroxene, spinel) and lower-crustal granulite xenoliths (plagioclase, quartz, augite, ilmenite). Late-stage interstitial melts rich in Fe and Ti migrated into vesicles in several samples, forming coarse-grained segregation vesicles that are dominated by ilmenite blades up to 2 mm long. The whole-rock elemental data are typical of intra-plate basanitic rocks, with strong enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (i.e. K, Th, U) as well as high field strength elements (i.e. Nb, Ta) relative to mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) and estimates of primordial mantle abundances. Mg# increased systematically with time during the evolution of the LBEJ Maar Complex, from 57.0–58.2 in the pre-maar lavas to 59.1–63.8 in the post-maar lavas. Compatible elements (Ca, Sc, Cr, Co, Ni) correlate positively with Mg#, whereas a large group of incompatible elements (Al, Na, K, P, Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, Ba, La, Ce, Sm, Hf, Ta, Th, U) correlate negatively with Mg#. These trends can be closely reproduced by simple models of fractional crystallization, provided that the incompatible element abundances of the parental, high-Mg# magmas are allowed minor variability. All successful fractionation models demand an important role for augite, despite its presence in the LBEJ volcanic rocks as only a late-stage microphenocrystic and groundmass mineral. Minor garnet fractionation is necessary to produce depletion of heavy rare earth element (REE) abundances in the pre-maar lavas, whose REE patterns cross those for the rest of the suite. The importance of augite and garnet fractionation indicate that the differentiation of the LBEJ magmas took place within the upper mantle, a conclusion that is supported by the presence of spinel lherzolite xenoliths in magmas from all stages in the evolution of the maar complex. Isotopic data for seven LBEJ volcanic rocks show the following ranges: 87Sr/86Sr 0.70327–0.70347, Nd 4.2–5.0, 206Pb/204Pb 18.60–18.81, 207Pb/204Pb 15.58–15.65, 208Pb/204Pb 38.19–38.58. Sr-Nd values are negatively correlated and form a trend parallel to the mantle array, overlapping the field for ocean island basalts (OIB). The LBEJ rocks have similar 87Sr/86Sr values but lower Nd compared to basanitic rocks from the US Basin and Range Province (BRP). Pb isotopic ratios are positively correlated and overlap the braod fields for MORB and OIB and the small fields for Mexican ore deposits and volcanic rocks from the active subduction-related Mexican Volcanic Belt. The LBEJ rocks have slightly more radiogenic Pb than basanitic rocks from the US BRP. Despite correlations among the isotopic ratios of the LBEJ suite, none of these ratios correlate with position in the eruption sequence, Mg#, or any other compositional parameter. The two lower-crustal xenoliths have high 87Sr/86Sr values (0.707, 0.710) and low Nd (-1.5,-8.0) compared to the LBEJ volcanic rocks, but their Pb isotopic compositions are only slightly more radiogenic than the volcanic rocks. These data do not support the widely held view that the lower crust is a major reservoir of unradiogenic Pb. In order to further constrain the role played by crustal contamination in generating the isotopic diversity in the LBEJ suite, we conducted an extensive investigation of Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic ratios for scoria clasts from different levels of a single scoria-fall horizon in the pyroclastic sequence related to the formation of La Breña Maar. Our results do not support an important role for crustal contamination in the LBEJ magmas. Rather, we conclude that minor isotopic variability exists in the mantle source regions beneath the maar complex.  相似文献

The dependence of peak ground acceleration and velocity on seismic moment is studied for a set of small earthquakes (0.7<M L<3.2) recorded digitally at distances of a few km in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area near Naples, Italy, during the ground uplift episode of 1982–1984. Numerical simulations, using the -square spectral model with constant stress drop and ane –kf high frequency decay, fit well both the velocity and acceleration data for an averagek=0.015. The observed ground motions in the 1–24 Hz frequency band appear to consist of radiation from simple sources modified only slightly by attenuation effects. Moreover, the scaling of peak values agrees closely with those determined in nonvolcanic areas, once the difference in stress drop is taken into account.  相似文献

Frequency dependent electrical properties of minerals and partial-melts   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The resistance to current flow of minerals and partial-melts is a frequency dependent electrical property. Measurements of the frequency dependent electrical impedance of single crystal olivine, polycrystalline olivine, dunites, metapelites, and partial-melts, between 10–4 and 105 Hz, when plotted in the complex impedance plane, reveal arcs that correspond to different conduction mechanisms in the material being studied. In polycrystalline materials, two impedance arcs related to material properties (as opposed to electrode properties or electrode-sample interactions) are observed. Each impedance arc is activated over a distinct range of frequency, that is, the mechanisms occur in series. Based on experiments comparing single and polycrystalline impedance spectra, experiments on samples with different electrode configurations, and on samples of varying dimension, the mechanisms responsible for these impedance arcs are interpreted as grain interior conduction ( gi ), grain boundary conduction (in polycrystalline materials; gb ), and sample-electrode interface effects, from highest to lowest frequency, respectively. Impedance spectra of natural dunitic rocks reveal analogous behavior, that is, gb and gi add in series. The grain boundaries do not enhance the conductivity of any of the materials studied (a direct result of the observed series electrical behavior) and, under certain conditions, limit the total conductivity of the grain interior-grain boundary system. By examining the frequency dependence of the electrical properties of partial-melts, it is possible to gain information about microstructure and the distribution of the melt phase and to determine the conditions under which the presence of melt enhances the total conductivity. Impedance spectra of olivine-basalt partial-melts indicate that at least two conduction mechanisms occur in series over the frequency range 10–4-105 Hz, similar to the observed electrical response of melt-absent polycrystalline materials. In a sample containing isolated melt pockets the intermediate frequency grain boundary impedance arc is modified by the presence of melt indicating series conduction behavior. In a sample with an interconnected melt phase the high frequency grain interior impedance arc is modified by the melt phase, indicating the initiation of parallel conduction behavior. Because field EM response versus frequency curves are used to derive conductivity versus depth profiles, it is important to perform laboratory experiments to understand the frequency-dependent electrical behavior of Earth materials. Activation energies determined from studies that measure conductivity at a single frequency may be erroneous because of the shift of the dominant conduction mechanism with frequency as temperature is varied.  相似文献

A critical evaluation of literature values for the solubility products, K sp NBS = [Fe2+][HS] Fe2+ HS (H NBS + )–1, of various iron sulphide phases results in consensus values for the pKs of 2.95 ± 0.1 for amorphous ferrous sulphide, 3.6 ± 0.2 for mackinawite, 4.4 ± 0.1 for greigite, 5.1 ± 0.1 for pyrrhotite, 5.25 ± 0.2 for troilite and 16.4 ± 1.2 for pyrite.Where the analogous ion activity products have been measured in anoxic freshwaters in which there is evidence for the presence of solid phase FeS, the values lie within the range of 2.6–3.22, indicating that amorphous iron sulphide is the controlling phase. The single value for a groundwater of 2.65 (2.98 considering carbonate complexation) agrees. In seawater four values range between 3.85 to 4.2, indicating that mackinawite or greigite may be the controlling phase. The single low value of 2.94 is in a situation where particularly high fluxes of Fe (II) and S (–II) may result in the preferential precipitation of amorphous iron sulphide. Formation of framboidal pyrite in these sulphidic environments may occur in micro-niches and does not appear to influence bulk concentrations. Calculations show that the formation of Fe2S2 species probably accounts for very little of the iron or sulphide in most natural waters. Previously reported stability constants for the formation of Fe (HS)2 and (Fe (HS)3) are shown to be suspect, and these species are also thought to be negligible in natural waters. In completely anoxic pore waters polysulphides also have a negligible effect on speciation, but in tidal sediments they may reach appreciable concentrations and lead to the direct formation of pyrite. Concentrations of iron and sulphide in pore waters can be controlled by the more soluble iron sulphide phase. The change in the IAP with depth within the sediment may reflect ageing of the solid phase or a greater flux of Fe (II) and S (–II) nearer the sediment surface. This possible kinetic influence on the value of IAPs has implications for their use in geochemical studies involving phase formation.  相似文献
