Summary The magnetic fabric of the Yampi Sound hematite ore bodies of Cockatoo and Koolan Island in Western Australia has been determined with a low field torque meter in an attempt to investigate the origin of the ores. The ore bodies are conformable with a ferruginous sedimentary sequence, which has been folded into overturned synclines and anticlines. Each ore body shows a consistent distribution of the principal susceptibility axes due to a preferred alignment of the trigonal axes of hematite, but the magnetic fabric is not related to the sedimentary structure of the ores. For the Cockatoo Island ore body the magnetic fabric indicates the presence of an axial plane foliation within the ore, suggesting that the preferred crystalline alignment is caused by arecrystallization of hematite during the folding of the sediments. The magnetic fabric of the ore bodies on Koolan Island is not related to either bedding or axial planes. This can be explained by assuming that the hematite recrystallized during an earlier stage of the folding process and that then the limbs of the fold were rotated into their present position. High field torque measurements on several ore specimens indicate a preferred crystalline alignment of hematite of about 25%. The ferruginous sediments of Cockatoo Island show a composite fabric caused by the superposition of two foliations, one being the bedding plane and the other the axial plane foliation impressed during the folding of the sediments.  相似文献

To further evaluate the potential of magnetic anisotropy techniques for determining the origin of the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) in sedimentary rocks, several new remanence anisotropy measurement techniques were explored. An accurate separation of the remanence anisotropy of magnetite and hematite in the same sedimentary rock sample was the goal.In one technique, Tertiary red and grey sedimentary rock samples from the Orera section (Spain) were exposed to 13 T fields in 9 different orientations. In each orientation, alternating field (af) demagnetization was used to separate the magnetite and hematite contributions of the high field isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM). Tensor subtraction was used to calculate the magnetite and hematite anisotropy tensors. Geologically interpretable fabrics did not result, probably because of the presence of goethite which contributes to the IRM. In the second technique, also applied to samples from Orera, an anisotropy of anhysteretic remanence (AAR) was applied in af fields up to 240 mT to directly measure the fabric of the magnetite in the sample. IRMs applied in 2 T fields followed by 240 mT af demagnetization, and thermal demagnetization at 90°C to remove the goethite contribution, were used to independently measure the hematite fabric in the same samples. This approach gave geologically interpretable results with minimum principal axes perpendicular to bedding, suggesting that the hematite and magnetite grains in the Orera samples both carry a depositional remanent magnetization (DRM). In a third experiment, IRMs applied in 13 T fields were used to measure the magnetic fabric of samples from the Dome de Barrot area (France). These samples had been demonstrated to have hematite as their only magnetic mineral. The fabrics that resulted were geologically interpretable, showing a strong NW-SE horizontal lineation consistent with AMS fabrics measured in the same samples. These fabrics suggest that the rock's remanence may have been affected by strain and could have originated as a DRM or a CRM.Our work shows that it is important to account for the presence of goethite when using high field IRMs to measure the remanence anisotropy of hematite-bearing sedimentary rocks. It also shows that very high magnetic fields (>10 T) may be used to measure the magnetic fabric of sedimentary rocks with highly coercive magnetic minerals without complete demagnetization between each position, provided that the field magnetically saturates the rock.  相似文献

Hematite-bearing rocks commonly have thermomagnetic curves with pronounced peaks in magnetization at temperatures which vary between samples. These peaks and their variability were reproduced for a sample of nearly-pure hematite in a series of different applied fields. With increasing applied field the peak sharpness became less marked and the “peak temperature” decreased. These results are similar to those obtained by Day (1975) for synthetic titanomagnetite powders, and a similar interpretation is proposed. Most laboratory fields are insufficient to saturate hematite, and the unsaturated magnetization increases and is unblocked and aligned with the field at temperatures critically dependent on the hysteretic properties of the sample. The natural tendency for magnetization to decay with increasing temperature then produces the observed peak.  相似文献

Magnetic properties of samples from Bell Island sedimentary rocks have been studied. X-ray analysis indicates that the main magnetic mineral is hematite in all samples. The other iron-bearing minerals identified are siderite and chamosite. Microscope observations of thin sections suggest that the rocks consist of oolitic hematite in a matrix of siderite or calcite. The intensity of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) varies in the range of (0.03–0.4 A m?1), depending on the percentage of hematite. The thermal demagnetization curves of NRM show in some cases a sharp increase in magnetization at temperatures in the range 500–600°C. The peaks that occur in these demagnetization curves are due to a chemical change of siderite during repeated laboratory heating. X-ray analysis confirmed that the newly formed material is magnetite. Since the original NRM has been masked by the new intergrown material, this would result in a serious error in the determination of paleomagnetic pole positions. The samples showing this behaviour were not considered for paleomagnetic study. The samples containing oolitic hematite in a calcite matrix exhibit very high stability of NRM, including directional stability until almost 670°C. For these samples, a virtual pole position based on N = 6 samples (32 specimens) demagnetized to 665°C is 34°N, 114°E, not far from published Ordovician poles for the North American craton.  相似文献

The model, applicable to fine-grained haematite, assumes that the magnetization of a grain is constrained to lie in the basal plane, within which there is a single easy axis. Following Stoner and Wohlfarth (1948), torque curves and rotational hysteresis are calculated, for various field strengths, as a function of the orientations of the basal plane and easy axis. The results show that, for certain orientations, rotational hysteresis may be expected to persist to very high field strengths. Further, the dependence of rotational hysteresis on orientation implies that rotational hysteresis is anisotropic and thus, that, for a distribution of grains, the anisotropy of resultant rotational hysteresis will reflect the degree of preferred orientation. It may therefore serve as a rock fabric parameter. Calculated models of resultant rotational hysteresis for assumed preferred orientation distributions compare favourably with measurements on a sample of Cambrian purple slate from North Wales.  相似文献

Thermomagnetic curves have been obtained for samples from 25 granites and gneisses in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. This data set can be divided into two distinct curve types: Type I includes rocks which exhibit no distinct Curie points and a linear decrease in magnetization with increasing temperature; Type II curves exhibit a distinct Curie point over a range of temperatures expected for magnetite (500–580°C). Synthetic samples constructed from magnetite and hematite powder exhibit Type I behavior when the hematite to magnetite ratio is high (e.g. 15 : 1). Examination of polished sections shows relatively coarse-grained magnetite only in Type II rocks. We interpret our data to indicate that Type I thermomagnetic curves are dominated by relatively large hematite/magnetite ratios while Type II granites are characterized by relatively coarse-grained magnetite. Type I granite samples have low magnetic susceptibility values (less than 4 × 10?4 cgs) while most Type II granite samples have higher values. The Type I granites are invariably18O-enriched whereas Type II granites typically exhibit low18O/16O ratios. These relationships are consistent with previously reported correlations of susceptibility (generally indicative of magnetite content) and oxygen isotopic trends in the southern Appalachian Piedmont.  相似文献

为了适应国家绿色建筑和装配式建筑的发展,减少地震中填充墙的平面外破坏,采用ABAQUS有限元程序研究了装配式AAC砌体填充墙的平面外抗震性能。进行了不同工况下足尺有限元模型的模拟,分析了填充墙高厚比、配筋率及填充墙与框架间连接方式对其平面外抗震性能的影响,以峰值、极限状态下的荷载与跨中位移评定其平面外抗震性能。分析结果表明:采用ABAQUS进行填充墙平面外抗震性能数值模拟与试验结果吻合较好;填充墙高厚比越小,平面外承载力越大,当高厚比小于10时,墙体延性大幅下降;填充墙配筋率和承载力近似呈正比关系,但当配筋率大于0.2%时,墙体延性也会下降;高厚比在15~20和配筋率在0.1%~0.2%范围内,填充墙呈适筋延性破坏模式;填充墙与框架之间布置双向柔性连接约束,墙体具备一定延性,墙体平面外承载力较单向连接件布置有所提升。  相似文献

We may use tectonic structures to confirm the primary age of a paleomagnetic remanence component but only if we know how to undo the natural strain history. It is normally insufficient to untilt fold limbs, as in the original version of Graham's Fold Test. One may need to remove also the bulk or local strain and account for strain heterogeneities, achieved by grain-strain and the more elusive intergranular flow. Most important, one must know the sequence of strains and tilts that occurred through geological history because the order of these noncommutative events critically affects the final orientation of the remanence component.In many non-metamorphic rocks, strain-rotation of a remanence component approximates a simple formula, although the actual rotation mechanism is complex. This simple, passive line approximation is confirmed experimentally for strains up to 45% oblate shortening. The passive line hypothesis has permitted successful paleomagnetic restorations in several natural case studies.Experimental deformation of samples with multicomponent remanences shows that differential stresses above a threshold value near 25 MPa selectively remove components with coercivities <25mT, due to domain wall rearrangements in large multidomain magnetite grains. Higher coercivity components are less reduced so that the net remanence vector spins always toward the high-coercivity component, at rates and along paths not predicted by any structural geological formula. Experimentally deformed samples with very fine hematite in the matrix showed their net remanence spinning away from the high coercivity component. This is due to easier mechanical disorientation of the very fine hematite grains, scattering their magnetic moments more and reducing their contribution to the overall remanence. Thus, muticomponent remanences have their components selected for survival based on rock-magnetic and microstructural criteria. Such stress-rotation by coercivity selection does not depend on the orientations of the principal stresses or strains, a concept that is counterintuitive to conventional structural geology.Syn-tectonic remagnetization is common in deformed sedimentary sequences and laboratory experiments reveal that a only moderate differential stress remagnetization is required to add components parallel to the ambient field, without significant strain. Alternating field demagnetization isolates components smeared along the great circle between the initial remanence direction and the remagnetizing field direction. In this case, the principal directions of the stress and finite strain tensors are irrelevant; remagnetization is triggered by a threshold differential stress. The final remanence direction is controlled by the ambient field direction and the remagnetization path lies along a great circle between the ambient field and the initial remanence direction.  相似文献

The remanent magnetization of igneous and sedimentary rocks, if not changed by heating or by alteration of magnetic minerals, keep the information about the intensity of that magnetic field in which initial magnetization took place.It has been determined that the dependence of anhysteretic remanent magnetization of such a rock on d.c. magnetic field permits us to find the paleointensity. A method of investigation of rock specimens by means of such remagnetization is suggested and applied to determining the paleointensity for a series of Permo-Triassic rocks.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic data for Australian Precambrian rocks allow the preparation of a tentative apparent polar wander curve. The proposed curve helps to “date” the magnetic remanence of many rocks whose age of magnetization or remagnetization is imprecise. Using this curve the CRMs of hematite ore deposits can be shown to have been acquired up to hundreds of millions of years after the deposition of the host rocks.Comparison of the Australian Precambrian apparent polar wander curve with proposed curves for Europe, Siberia, North America and Africa provides further evidence for the suggestion of relative continental movement during the Precambrian. If relative continental drift has not (or could not have) taken place, then “true” polar wander apparently varies relative to the continent for which it is determined.  相似文献

火成岩岩石具有高磁化率特征,与沉积岩差别明显,岩石的高磁化率会对核磁共振信号产生显著影响,开展核磁共振测井在火成岩地层应用的适应性分析研究,为广泛使用核磁共振测井用于火成岩储层评价提供参考.采用理论模拟、实验分析及实际测井资料相结合的方法,分析了高磁化率岩石的核磁共振响应特征.分析结果表明,火成岩岩石具有很高的磁化率,从酸性火成岩到基性火城岩,岩石的磁化率一般是逐渐增大的.高磁化率岩石孔隙内部会产生强梯度磁场,孔隙内部的磁场梯度越强,核磁共振的T2谱前移越明显,核磁信号衰减幅度也越大,核磁分析孔隙度与常规分析的孔隙度误差也越大;相同岩石磁化率情况下,岩石孔径越小,岩石孔隙内部磁场梯度越强,核磁信号衰减越大,核磁共振测井计算的孔隙度也越低.因此,核磁共振测井与岩性有关系,核磁共振测井会受到高磁化率岩石的显著影响.核磁共振测井在部分火成岩,尤其在中基性火成岩和小孔径火成岩储层中应用具有很大的局限性.  相似文献

The components of the NRM in Middle Siwalik red beds are carried by two phases of hematite, a red pigment phase and a specular hematite phase. We present evidence in the form of a conglomerate test that the specularite phase carries a remanence acquired during or shortly after deposition. The red pigment, however, post-dates deposition, in many cases by at least one reversal boundary. This secondary component has a higher coercivity but a lower blocking temperature in these rocks and can therefore be selectively removed by thermal demagnetization to reveal a primary magnetization useful for magnetostratigraphic studies.  相似文献

The formation of hematite and goethite concretions in different sedimentary rocks including sandstones is an important diagenetic process in the geologic history of the Earth. Its interpretation can also contribute to understanding the diagenetic history of Martian iron hydroxide concretions. A case study of iron-rich concretions from Estonian Middle Devonian sandstones exposed in ancient river valleys in southeastern Estonia was carried out based on the results of mineralogical, petrographical, geochemical, petrophysical and magnetic analyses. It was found that the high Fe2O3(total) content (25.0–39.5%), high magnetic susceptibility, bulk and grain density, very low porosity, corrosion and fracturing of the quartz grains of the platy iron concretions are in contrast with properties of the Devonian host sandstones. However the ferrous iron content (measured as FeO) of iron-rich concretions was as low as in the other Devonian rocks, suggesting an oxidizing environment and arid climate during the cementation by iron-hydroxides. The fracturing of quartz grains cemented by iron hydroxides could take place at near-surface conditions including vadose and phreatic zones in arid climate with high evaporation rates. Such climatic conditions have been reported for the Baltic region during Devonian, Upper Permian and Triassic times. We have found that goethite is prevalent in the cement, replacing clay and carbonate minerals. We assume that this iron-rich cement is originated from the mobilization of iron in host sandstones by groundwater, associated with tectonic activity at the end of the Middle Devonian, evidenced by fracturing in Devonian outcrops and caves. Although this mobilization could occur under reducing conditions, precipitation of goethite and hematite for the cementation could take place in oxidizing environment along bedding planes close to the surface during short sedimentation breaks. Another possible time for the formation of iron concretions could be Permian, under the condition of both arid climate and tectonic activity.  相似文献

This paper describes the findings of the study pertaining to the laboratory measurements of longitudinal wave velocities and attenuation coefficients of various Gondwana rocks of Chikhalgaon, Saoner and Agarjhari areas of Chanda-Wardha valley coalfield. It is found that Barakar sandstones, in general, have higher longitudinal wave velocities than Barakar and Talchir shales and Kamthi sandstones. Of the Barakar sandstones, the fine grained feldspathised variety has the maximum velocity. Attenuation coefficients of coarse-grained rocks are higher than those of fine grained ones. Black carbonaceous shales of Barakar are characterised by moderately high longitudinal wave velocities and attenuation coefficients. Coals are characterized by low longitudinal wave velocities and high attenuation coefficients. Longitudinal wave velocities of the rocks along the bedding plane are always higher than those perpendicular to the bedding plane.  相似文献
