Various rock magnetic techniques were applied to characterize magnetically the samples of a soil profile taken from west-central Minnesota. There is a marked change in magnetic properties as a function of depth in the core. X-ray analysis and Curie temperature measurements carried out on the magnetic fractions indicate that magnetite is the dominant iron oxide in both the top soil and the subsoil. The intensity of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) decreases sharply as the depth increases. In contrast, the stability of ARM was found to be higher for the subsoil. The surface soil sample was capable of acquiring a significant amount of viscous remanent magnetization (VRM). The VRM acquisition coefficient (Sa) of the subsoil (Sa= 3.18 × 10?6emu g?1, 3.18 × 10?6A m2 kg?1) was about ten times weaker than that of the top soil sample (Sa = 3.868 × 10?7emu g?1, 3.868 × 10?7A m2 kg?1). The magnetic domain state indicator, the ratio of coercivity of remanence to coercive force, Hcr/Hc, was 1.5 and 3.85 for the top soil and subsoil, respectively. It appears that the observed variations in magnetic properties down the present soil core is due only to a difference in grain size. We conclude that the magnetic grains in surface soil samples were more single-domain (SD) like whereas the magnetite grains in the subsoil samples were more likely in pseudo-single-domain (PSD) or small multidomain (MD) range. The observed lower stability for the surface soil samples is attributed to the presence of superparamagnetic grains whose presence was confirmed by transmission electron micrographs.  相似文献

The Starunia oil-ozokerite deposit occurs in the Boryslav-Pokuttya Unit of the Carpathian Foredeep, which is the main oil- and gas-bearing part of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Starunia is of great interest in studying the relationship between the magnetic properties of rocks, soils and hydrocarbons due to extensive surface microseeps yielding oil and gas, mineral water, and clay pulp containing hydrocarbons. We identified a local negative magnetic anomaly (30–35 nT) with a width of about 700 m within the MAG1 profile. The magnetic high is associated with the area of the largest mud volcanoes in the Starunia structure. Magnetic susceptibility of the soil was measured on a site with three distinct landscape features: a patch of forest with phaeozem and mass-specific susceptibility (χ) of 20–45 × 10?8 m3/kg for the surface topsoil; an area near the volcano and Nadia-1 well with visible hydrocarbon microseepage at the surface and the topsoil showing no visible evidence of hydrocarbon presence with χ = 20–50 × 10?8 m3/kg; and a patch of lowland with gleysols and χ = 10–20 × 10?8 m3/kg. Hydrocarbon-containing clays and soils from the alluvial sediments of the Velyky Lukavets River and bedrock clays near the Nadia-1 well demonstrated high χ values (up to 250–440 × 10?8 m3/kg).  相似文献

The physical and chemical properties of soils are closely controlled by the climate factors and thus are significant for paleoclimate reconstruction.In this study,two adjacent soil profiles(LP and LPM) with different slopes from Yan'an,Shaanxi Province,were investigated using magnetic methods to determine the impact of topography on magnetic properties of soil.Our results show that although LP and LPM have similar magnetic minerals and grain size distribution,both the average and maximum magnetic susceptibility(x) of LP are almost doubled compared to those of LPM.In addition,the ratios of susceptibility enhancement to the background(Ex) for LP and LPM are 2.27 and 2.04,respectively;the ratios of saturation isothermal remnant magnetization(SIRM) enhancement(ESIRM) for these two profiles are 1.80 and 1.86,respectively.The slopes of the linear regression trends between frequency-dependent susceptibility(χFD) and "hard" isothermal remnant magnetization(HIRM)(χFD/HIRM),Anhysteretic remnant magnetization(ARM) and HIRM(ARM/HIRM),are almost free from the effect of parent material.χFD/HIRMs for LP and LPM are 28.7×10x5 and 28.9×10x5 A mx1,respectively;ARM/HIRMs are 0.35 and 0.33 for LP and LPM,respectively.These results demonstrate that parameters,χFD/HIRM,ARM/HIRM,Ex and ESIRM,are affected less by parent material and topography,which are better than the x for bulk samples to indicate the paleoclimatic conditions(e.g.,the paleorainfall) in a large-scale region.  相似文献

The April 20, 2013 Lushan earthquake which occurred in Sichuan, China had only moderate thrust. However, the computed seismic moments (M 0) for the Lushan earthquake calculated by several institutions differ significantly from 0.4 × 1019 to 1.69 × 1019 Nm, up to four times difference. We evaluate ten computed M 0s by using normal mode observations from superconducting gravimeters in Mainland China. We compute synthetic normal modes on the basis of moment tensor solutions and fit them to the observed normal modes. Comparison of our results indicates that M 0 is the main cause for some large differences between observations and synthetics. We suggest that a moment magnitude of M w6.6, corresponding to a M 0 of 0.97–1.08 × 1019 Nm, characterizes the size and strength of the seismic source of the Lushan earthquake.  相似文献

Illite clay particles with adsorbed137Cs were added as a submillimeter layer to the surface of silt-clay sediments contained in rectangular Plexiglas cells stored in a temperature-regulated aquarium, in order to trace the effect of the oligochaete, Tubifex tubifex, and the amphipod, Pontoporeia hoyi, on mass redistribution near the sediment-water interface. A well-collimated NaI gamma detector scanned each sediment column (~10 cm deep) at daily or weekly intervals for six months, depicting the time evolution of radioactivity with and without added benthos. In a cell with tubificids (~5 × 104 m?2), which feed below 3 cm and defecate on surface sediments, the labeled layer was buried at a rate of 0.052 ± 0.007 cm/day (20°C). When labeled particles entered the feeding zone,137Cs reappeared in surface sediments creating a bimodal activity profile. In time, the activity tended toward a uniform distribution over the upper 6 cm, decreasing exponentially below to undetectable levels by 9 cm. In a cell with amphipods (~1.6 × 104 m?2) uniform activity developed rapidly (~17 days) down to a well-defined depth (1.5 cm). The mixing of sediments by Pontoporeia is described by a simple quantitative model of eddy diffusive mixing of sediment solids. The value of the diffusion coefficient, 4.4 cm2/yr (7°C) was computed from a least squares fit of theoretical to observed profile broadening over time. In a cell without benthos, small but measurable migration of137Cs indicated an effective molecular diffusion coefficient of 0.02 cm2/yr.  相似文献

Intense rainfall following wildfire can cause substantial soil and sediment redistribution. With concern for the increasing magnitude and frequency of wildfire events, research needs to focus on hydrogeomorphological impacts of fire, particularly downstream fluxes of sediment and nutrients. Here, we investigate variation in magnetic enhancement of soil by fire in burnt eucalypt forest slopes to explore its potential as a post‐fire sediment tracer. Low‐frequency magnetic susceptibility values (χlf) of <10 µm material sourced from burnt slopes (c. 8·0–10·4 × 10?6 m3 kg?1) are an order of magnitude greater than those of <10 µm material derived from long‐unburnt areas (0·8 × 10?6 m3 kg?1). Susceptibility of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (χARM) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) values are similarly enhanced. Signatures are strongly influenced by soil and sediment particle size and storage of previously burnt material in footslope areas. Whilst observations indicate that signatures based on magnetic enhancement show promise for post‐fire sediment tracing, problems arise with the lack of dimensionality in such data. Magnetic grain size indicators χfd%, χARM/SIRM and χfd/χARM offer further discrimination of source material but cannot be included in numerical unmixing models owing to non‐linear additivity. This leads to complications in quantitatively ascribing downstream sediment to source areas of contrasting burn severity since sources represent numerical multiples of each other, indicating the need to involve additional indicators, such as geochemical evidence, to allow a more robust discrimination. —?An intriguing observation in Greenland is a clear spatial correlation between seismicity and deglaciated areas along passive continental margins, a piece of evidence for earthquake triggering due to postglacial rebound. Another piece of evidence for induced seismicity due to deglaciation derives from earthquake source mechanisms. Sparse, low magnitude seismicity has made it difficult to determine focal mechanisms from Greenland earthquakes. On the basis of two normal faulting events along deglaciated margins and from the spatial distribution of epicenters, earlier investigators suggested that the earthquakes of Greenland are due to postglacial rebound. This interpretation is tested here by using more recent data. Broadband waveforms of teleseismic P waves from the August 10, 1993 (m b = 5.4) and October 14, 1998 (m b = 5.1) earthquakes have been inverted for moment tensors and source parameters. Both mechanisms indicate normal faulting with small strike-slip components: the 1993 event, strike = 348.9°, dip = 41.0°, rake =?56.3°, focal depth = 11?km, seismic moment = 1.03?×?1024 dyne-cm, and M w = 5.3; the 1998 event, strike = 61.6°, dip = 58.0°, rake =?95.5°, focal depth = 5?km, seismic moment = 5.72?×?1023 dyne-cm, and M w = 5.1. These and the two prior events support the theory that the shallow part of the lithosphere beneath the deglaciated margins is under horizontal extension. The observed stress field can be explained as flexural stresses due to removal of ice loads and surface loads by glacial erosion. These local extensional stresses are further enhanced by the spreading stress of continental crust and reactivate preexisting faults. Earthquake characteristics observed from Greenland suggest that the dominant seismogenic stresses are from postglacial rebound and spreading of the continental lithosphere.  相似文献

The thermal diffusivity of a naturally occurring polycrystalline olivine (Fo91Fa09) was measured by the Flash technique in the temperature range of 450–1500 K. At 450 K the thermal diffusivity was 10.7 × 10?7 m2/s and decreased as a function of reciprocal temperature to 7.0 × 10?7 m2/s at 800 K. From that temperature, the values gradually increased to a maximum of 7.8 × 10?7 m2/s at 1000 K, and then steadily decreased to 5.6 × 10?7 m2/s at 1500 K. The unusual decrease above 1000 K was caused by a reduction of the previously oxidized samples. The olivine's oxidation state plays a significant role in the value of thermal diffusivity at high temperatures.  相似文献

59Ni in 0.4 g of nickel from deep-sea sediments was measured with an extremely low-level X-ray spectrometer. The obtained specific activity was (5.9 ± 1.8) × 10?2 dpm/kg sediments. The59Ni activity induced by proton and alpha particle irradiation in outer space can be estimated as 300 dpm/kg dust. Hence, the content of extraterrestrial dust in deep-sea sediments was not more than 200 ppm.  相似文献

Gega lake, in southeastern Tibet, was formed by the blocking of Yarlung Tsangpo gorge by a glacier and is a well-known example of geomorphological damming. However, the evolution of the damming process at the site is still not understood in detail. Here, we use measurements of multiple magnetic parameters of the sediments from the Yusong (YS) 3 section, which is well-dated by optically stimulated luminescence, to provide a detailed history of the late stage of Gega dammed lake since 17.0 ka. Low-frequency field magnetic susceptibility (χlf) increases upwards gradually from 25 to 79?×?10?8 m3/kg above 5.5 m, but other magnetic properties, such as frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility (χfd % and χfd), susceptibility of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (χARM), and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) did not show a similar degree of enhancement. The magnetic grain size indicators of χARM/χlf, χARM/SIRM, and χlf/SIRM all indicate a trend of increasing magnetic grain size from the 5.5 m to the top of section; however, the bulk sediment grain size decreases gradually within the same interval. The total organic carbon is very low (0.2–0.7%), and thus, it is unlikely that the sedimentary environment is sufficiently strongly reducing to lead to the dissolution of magnetic minerals. Therefore, we infer that the coarsening-upwards of the magnetic grain size, and the increasing magnetic susceptibility from 5.5 m, reflect the gradual preferential preservation of magnetic minerals, caused by the deepening of the lake. Thus, we interpret the magnetic record of the section as reflecting the gradual deepening of the late stage of Gega ice-dammed lake. Last, the abrupt disappearance of the lake may have resulted in an outburst flood.  相似文献

—?Thirty-three earthquakes which occurred in the Central Apennines (Italy) with Ml ranging from 2.4 to 3.7 have been spectrally analysed using digital recordings from twelve stations of the Rete Sismometrica Marchigiana (RSM) network. Data corrected for geometrical spreading and quality factor Q have been inverted by means of the Generalised Inversion Technique. Site responses have been compared with those obtained by H/V ratio. Site amplifications have been observed both at stations placed on Pleistocene sediments and at one station located at 1800?m altitude. Source parameters have been calculated by fitting the spectra with an automatic procedure adopting the ω2 source model. The seismic moments range from 9.23?×?1019 to 4.28?×?1021 dyne-cm with an average M 0 (S) to M 0 (P) ratio of 1.13?±?0.38. The stress drops are generally low and they vary between 1.1 and 10.2?bar when estimated by using S source spectra, and between 0.5 and 7.1?bar when the P-source spectra are fitted. For the considered range of seismic moments we observe that the stress drop does not have significant dependence on event size.  相似文献

A wave flume experiment was conducted to study nutrient fluxes at water-sediment interface of Meiliang Bay under different hydrodynamic conditions. The results reveal that hydrodynamics has remarkable effects on nutrient fluxes in this area. With a bottom wave stress of 0.019 N m?2 (equivalent to disturbance caused by wind SE 5–7 m s?1 at the sediment sample site of Meiliang Bay), the fluxes of TN, TDN and NH4 +-N were separately 1.92 × 10?3, ?1.81 × 10?4 and 5.28 × 10?4 mg m?2 s?1 (positive for upward and negative for downward), but for TP, TDP and SRP, the fluxes were 5.69 × 10?4, 1.68 × 10?4 and ?1.29 × 10?4 mg m?2 s?1. In order to calculate the released amount of nutrients based on these results, statistic analysis on the long-term meteorological data was conducted. The result shows that the maximum lasting time for wind SE 5–7 m s?1 in this area is about 15 h in summer. Further calculation shows that 111 t TN, 32 t NH4 +-N, 34 t TP and 10 t TDP can be released into water (the sediment area was 47.45% of the whole surface area), resulting in concentration increase of 0.025, 0.007, 0.007 and 0.002 mg L?1 separately. With stronger disturbance (bottom wave stress is 0.217 N m?2 which is equivalent to disturbance caused by wind SE 10–11 m s?1 at the same site), there has been significant increase of nutrient fluxes (1.16 × 10?2, 6.76 × 10?3, 1.14 × 10?2 and 2.14 × 10?3 mg m?2 s?1 for TN, DTN and NH4 +-N and TP). The exceptions were TDP with flux having a decrease (measured to be 9.54 × 10?5 mg m?2 s?1) and SRP with flux having a small increase (measured to be 5.42 × 10?5 mg m?2 s?1). The same statistic analysis on meteorological data reveal that the maximum lasting time for wind SE 10–11 m s?1 is no more than 5 h. Based on the nutrient fluxes and the wind lasting-time, similar calculations were also made suggesting that 232 t TN, 134.9 t TDN, 228 t NH4 +-N, 42.7 t TP, 2.0 t TDP and 1.1 t SRP will be released from sediment at this hydrodynamic condition resulting in the concentration increases of 0.050, 0.029, 0.049, 0.009, 0.0004 and 0.0002 mg L?1. Therefore in shallow lakes, surface disturbance can lead to significant increase of nutrient concentrations although some components in water column had negative flux with weak disturbance (e.g. TDN and SRP in this experiment). In this case, sediment looks to be a source of nutrients. These nutrients deposited in sediment can be carried or released into water with sediment resuspension or changes of environmental conditions at water-sediment interface, which can have great effects on aquatic ecosystem and is also the characteristics of shallow lakes.  相似文献

The fine mineral fractions < 2 μm extracted from pelitic sediments of the Eocambrian upper Damaran Mulden Group were subjected to a detailed isotopic study by the Rb-Sr and K-Ar methods in combination with a mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffractometry.The sediments contain two major parageneses of metamorphic origin which can be related to two separate low-grade regional metamorphic events of anchizonal intensity with temperatures between 250 and 300°C and pressures up to 2 kbar. These events are dated at about 535 m.y. and 455 m.y. respectively (with λ(87Rb) = 1.42 × 10?11 yr?1).Anomalously high K-Ar ages on samples from specific stratigraphic horizons can be related to open system behaviour and K migration during the formation of stilpnomelane from ferromagnesian illites.This study shows that age dating of sedimentary rocks subjected to low-grade regional metamorphism can only yield meaningful results if the interpretation of isotopic analyses is based on a clear understanding of the mineralogical processes that led to the formation of those parageneses which characterize the rock unit dated.  相似文献

We present the distribution of226Ra in eight vertical profiles from the eastern Pacific. The profiles are located along a meridional trend near 125°W, from 43°S to 29°N. Surface226Ra concentrations are about 7 dpm/100 kg, except for the two stations south of 30°S where the higher values are due to the Antarctic influence. Deep waters show a distinctive south-to-north increase in the226Ra content, from about 26 to 41 dpm/100 kg near the bottom. Unlike in the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans, the effect of226Ra injection from bottom sediments is clearly discernible in the area. The presence of this primary226Ra can be traced up to at least 1–1.5 km above the ocean floor, making this part of the sea bed among the strongest source regions for the oceanic226Ra. Numerical solutions of a two-dimensional vertical advection-diffusion model applied to the deep (1.2–4 km)226Ra data give the following set of best fits: upwelling velocity(Vz) = 3.5m/yr, vertical eddy diffusivity(Kz) = 0.6cm2/s, horizontal (north-south) eddy diffusivity(Ky) = 1 × 107cm2/s, and water-column regeneration flux of226Ra(J) = 3.3 × 10?5dpmkg?1yr?1 as an upper limit. These parametric values are in general agreement with one-dimensional (vertical) model fits for the Ra-Ba system. However, consideration of226Ra balance leads us to suspect the appropriateness of describing the vertical exchange processes in the eastern Pacific with constantVz and Kz. If future modeling is attempted, it may be preferable to treat the area as a diffusion-dominant mixing regime with depth-dependent diffusivities.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, diffusive boundary-layer thickness, and sediment composition on fluxes of inorganic N and P were estimated for sediment cores with oxidized surfaces from nearshore waters (2?C10?m) of a montane oligotrophic lake. Fluxes of N and P were not affected by diffusive boundary-layer thickness but were strongly affected by temperature. Below 16?°C, sediments sequestered small amounts of P and released small amounts of N. Above 16?°C, the seasonal maximum water temperature, sediments were substantial sources of N (NH4 +?CN?=?2?C24?mg?m?2 d?1; NO3 ??+?NO2 ??CN?=?2?C5?mg?m?2 d?1) and P (0.1?C0.4?mg?m?2 d?1), indicating potential responsiveness of sediment?Cwater nutrient exchange, and of corresponding phytoplankton growth, to synoptic warming.  相似文献

A series of Mb 3.8–5.5 induced seismic events in the midcontinent region, United States, resulted from injection of fluid either into a basal sedimentary reservoir with no underlying confining unit or directly into the underlying crystalline basement complex. The earthquakes probably occurred along faults that were likely critically stressed within the crystalline basement. These faults were located at a considerable distance (up to 10 km) from the injection wells and head increases at the hypocenters were likely relatively small (~70–150 m). We present a suite of simulations that use a simple hydrogeologic‐geomechanical model to assess what hydrogeologic conditions promote or deter induced seismic events within the crystalline basement across the midcontinent. The presence of a confining unit beneath the injection reservoir horizon had the single largest effect in preventing induced seismicity within the underlying crystalline basement. For a crystalline basement having a permeability of 2 × 10?17 m2 and specific storage coefficient of 10?7/m, injection at a rate of 5455 m3/d into the basal aquifer with no underlying basal seal over 10 years resulted in probable brittle failure to depths of about 0.6 km below the injection reservoir. Including a permeable (kz = 10?13 m2) Precambrian normal fault, located 20 m from the injection well, increased the depth of the failure region below the reservoir to 3 km. For a large permeability contrast between a Precambrian thrust fault (10?12 m2) and the surrounding crystalline basement (10?18 m2), the failure region can extend laterally 10 km away from the injection well.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 × 106years) was measured in individual and groups of deep-sea iron and stony spherules by highly sensitive neutron activation analysis. The activities found were less than 20 dpm53Mn/kg Fe (10?5?10?6 dpm53Mn/sample) in iron spherules except one iron spherule whose activity was 241 ± 73 dpm53Mn/kg Fe. These low activities may indicate evaporative loss of53Mn due to heating in the earth's atmosphere. On the other hand, all stony spherules contained 200–260 dpm53Mn/kg Fe which is similar to chondritic values. These spherules may be ablation debris from large objects.  相似文献

Presently available data on the reaction of SO2 with OH radicals (OH + SO2 + \(M\xrightarrow[{k_1 }]{}\) HSO3 +M) are critically reviewed in light of recent stratospheric sulfur budget calculations. These calculations impose that the net oxidation ratek of SO2 within the stratosphere should fall within the range 10?7k≤10?9, if the SO2 oxidation model for the stratospheric sulfate layer is assumed to be correct. The effective reaction rate constantk 1 * =k 1[M] at the stratospheric temperature is estimated as $$k_1^* = \frac{{(8.2 \pm 2.2) \times 10^{ - 13} \times [M]}}{{(0.79 \mp 0.34) \times 10^{ - 13} + [M]}}cm^3 /molecules sec$$ where [M] refers to the total number density (molecules/cm3). Using the above limiting values ofk 1 * , and the estimated OH density concentrations, the net oxidation rate is calculated as 3.6×10?7k≤1.3×10?8 at 17 km altitude. This indicates that the upper limit of thesek values exceeds the tolerable range imposed by the model by a factor of about four. Obviously the uncertainty of thek 1 * values and of the OH concentrations in the stratosphere is still too large to make definite conclusions on the validity of the SO2 model.  相似文献

To ascertain the influence of hydrological boundary conditions on acidity fluxes in lakes influenced by acid mine drainage, acidity budgets were developed for two sediments in areas of differential groundwater inflow (approx. 1 L m?2 d?1 and 10 L m?2 d?1). In both sediments iron was deposited as schwertmannite leading to iron(III) enriched sediments (3.9…6.2 mmol g?1, referred to dry weight). Compared to the surface water, the inflowing groundwater had higher pH (4.5 vs. 3), ferrous iron (6…20 mmol L?1 vs. 0.8…2.0 mmol L?1), and sulfate (5…60 mmol L?1 vs. 8…13 mmol L?1) concentrations. The inflow changed the sediment pore water chemistry and triggered a further increase in pH to above 5.5. In both sediments acidity generation in the surface water (10…30 mol m?2 a?1) strongly prevailed over acidity consumption in the sediments (> ?0.6 mol m?2 a?1). With advective groundwater inflow, however, more acidity was consumed due to TRIS formation (?0.12 mol m?2 a?1 vs. ?0.017 mol m?2 a?1), iron carbonate burial (upper estimate: ?0.14 mol m?2 a?1 vs. ?0.022 mol m?2 a?1), and unspecific ferrous iron retention (?0.39 mol m?2 a?1 vs. ?0.08 mol m?2 a?1). Also, less acidity was generated due to schwertmannite transformation (?2.4 mol m?2 a?1 vs. ?0.11 mol m?2 a?1). The acidity balance of internal processes in the sediment with groundwater inflow was negative, whereas it was positive in the other sediment. The study demonstrates that in acidic and iron rich lakes the hydrological boundary conditions strongly affect geochemical processes as subsumed in acidity fluxes.  相似文献

The combination of magnetic and geochemical methods was used to determine the mineralogy, grain size and domain structure of magnetic particles in indoor dust collected in 195 sites in Warsaw, Poland. Data show an asymmetric distribution of magnetic susceptibility (χ) in the wide range of 20–1514 × 10?8 m3 kg?1. Comparison of magnetic parameters shows that the internal dust contains outside pollution characteristic for air and soil. More than 90% of indoor dust samples were characterized by roughly uniform magnetic mineralogy, typical for fine grained magnetite (diameter of 0.2–5 μm), and grain size between pseudo-single-domain and small multi-domain with small contribution of superpara-magnetic particles (~10%). Samples with χ larger than 220 × 10?8 m3 kg?1 contain mainly magnetite and an anthropogenic metallic Fe with T C > 700°C.
