Abstract— Cañon Diablo meteoritic iron oxide consists mainly of goethite and maghemite and contains 209 to 630 ppb uranium compared to <0.02 ppb in the unweathered octahedrite. Significant radioactive disequilibria between 238U, 234U and 230Th indicate that uranium was sorbed from soil porewater during terrestrial weathering after meteorite impact 50 ka ago. Depending on the model assumed for U uptake, corrected 230Th-234U ages of 24 to 48 ka were obtained. While the data presented may not allow an unambiguous interpretation, the potential of this approach in obtaining minimum terrestrial ages for weathered meteorites is demonstrated.  相似文献

Nine plates of the 7820 Å CO2 band were taken in 1971. A curve-of-growth analysis of the CO2 lines indicates a rotational temperature of 241 ± 2°K, with an average slope to the curve of growth of 0.60 ± 0.03. The Venus phase angle ranged from 7.2 to 10.7°. The equivalent widths of the 1971 data fall on a smooth curve fit through the 1969 data for this band; there does not appear to be any discontinuity in the phase curve at small phase angles.  相似文献

This work discusses theoretical models of chromospheric heating for \(\epsilon\) Eridani by shock waves. Self-consistent, nonlinear and time-dependent ab-initio numerical computations for the excitation of the atmosphere (i.e., arrays of flux tubes) are pursued based on waves generated in stellar convective zones. Based on previous studies the magnetic filling factor is estimated according to the stellar rotational period, although general models are described as well. The Ca II H+K fluxes are computed assuming partial redistribution (PRD). Time-dependent ionization notably affects the resulting Ca II fluxes, as expected. The emergent Ca II H+K fluxes are based on two-component models, consisting of a dominant magnetic component (as given by longitudinal tube waves) and a subordinate acoustic component. The Ca II fluxes as obtained are smaller by about a factor of 2 than those given by observations. Possible reasons for this discrepancy include (1) inherent limitations of our theoretical approach as it is based on 1-D rather than 3-D modelling and/or (2) the existence of additional heating processes in \(\epsilon\) Eridani (a young star) not included here.  相似文献

Observations and analysis of magnetic activity phenomena in the atmospheres of cool stars—e.g., active regions, flares, stellar cycles—give insight into the fundamental processes in the heating of chromospheres, transition regions (TRs), and coronae. Diagnostics of magnetic activity can be found throughout the whole electromagnetic spectrum; from radio wavelengths, where gyrosynchrotron radiation arises from the quiescent and flaring corona, to optical, where important signatures are the Balmer lines and the Ca ii IRT and H&K lines, eventually to UV and X-rays, the latter mainly due to coronal thermal plasma. The UV and EUV ranges contains a plethora of emission lines that are powerful diagnostics for the warm (10?000 K) chromospheres, hot (100?000–800?000 K) TRs and very hot (1–10 MK) coronae. Also very weak coronal winds from cool stars have been identified and characterized thanks to high resolution UV spectra. Here I review the main results from UV observations of cool stars atmospheres and outline what can be expected from future UV imaging and spectroscopy measurements.  相似文献

Abstract— Six ordinary chondrite breccias from the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid (Spain), are described and classified as follows: the solar gas-rich regolith breccia Oviedo (H5); the pre-metamorphic fragmental breccias Cabezo de Mayo (type 6, L-LL), and Sevilla (LL4); the fragmental breccias Cañellas (H4) and Gerona (H5); and the impact melt breccia, Madrid (L6). We confirm that chondrites with typical light-dark structures and petrographic properties typical of regolith breccias may (Oviedo) or may not (Cañellas) be solar gas-rich. Cabezo de Mayo and Sevilla show convincing evidence that they were assembled prior to peak metamorphism and were equilibrated during subsequent reheating. These meteorites contain small melt rock clasts that were incorporated into the host chondrite while still molten and/or plastic and cooled rapidly and, yet, are totally equilibrated with their hosts. Compositions of olivine and low-Ca pyroxene in host chondrite and breccia clasts in Cabezo de Mayo are transitional between groups L and LL. It is suggested, based on mineralogic and oxygen isotopic compositions of host and clasts, that the rock formed on the L parent body by mixing, prior to peak metamorphism. This was followed by partial equilibration of two different materials: the indigenous L chondrite host and exotic LL melt rock clasts.  相似文献

The Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) is being operated on the New Solar Telescope of the Big Bear Solar Observatory. It simultaneously records spectra of Hα and Ca ii 8542 Å lines, and this dual-spectra measurement provides an estimate of the temperature and nonthermal speed components. We observed a loop structure in AR 11305 using the FISS, SDO/AIA, and STEREO/EUVI in 304 Å, and found plasma material falling along the loop from a coronal height into the umbra of a sunspot, which accelerated up to 80 km?s?1. We also observed C2 and C7 flare events near the loop. The temperature of the downflows was in the range of 10?000?–?33?000 K, increasing toward the umbra. The temperature of the flow varied with time, and the temperature near the footpoint rose immediately after the C7 flare, but the temperature toward the umbra remained the same. There seemed to be a temporal correlation between the amount of downflow material and the observed C-class flares. The downflows decreased gradually soon after the flares and then increased after a few hours. These high-speed red-shift events occurred continuously during the observations. The flows observed on-disk in Hα and Ca ii 8542 Å appeared as fragmented, fuzzy condensed material falling from the coronal heights when seen off-limb with STEREO/EUVI at 304 Å. Based on these observations, we propose that these flows were an on-disk signature of coronal rain.  相似文献

Variation of the residual intensities of metallic and hydrogen lines of R CMa with phase is presented from measurement of its spectrograms obtained with dispersions of 10.3 Å/mm and 4.1 Å/mm at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. It is found from variation of the residual intensities of these lines, with the exception of the Ca–K line, that the duration of the eclipse is longer than expected from the photometric elements. The fractional loss of light of the eclipsed component at mid-eclipse has been derived from the ratio between residual intensities of the lines at mid-minimum and outside eclipse. The value so deduced is found to be larger than expected from the light-curve analysis. The behaviour of the residual intensities of the K line around the mid-minimum provides some evidence of emission at the line center. The possible existence of gaseous matter surrounding the components is discussed.Presented at the Trieste Colloquium on Mass Loss from Stars, September 12–16, 1968.  相似文献

The petrology and mineralogy of shock melt veins in the L6 ordinary chondrite host of Villalbeto de la Peña, a highly shocked, L chondrite polymict breccia, have been investigated in detail using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. Entrained olivine, enstatite, diopside, and plagioclase are transformed into ringwoodite, low‐Ca majorite, high‐Ca majorite, and an assemblage of jadeite‐lingunite, respectively, in several shock melt veins and pockets. We have focused on the shock behavior of diopside in a particularly large shock melt vein (10 mm long and up to 4 mm wide) in order to provide additional insights into its high‐pressure polymorphic phase transformation mechanisms. We report the first evidence of diopside undergoing shock‐induced melting, and the occurrence of natural Ca‐majorite formed by solid‐state transformation from diopside. Magnesiowüstite has also been found as veins injected into diopside in the form of nanocrystalline grains that crystallized from a melt and also occurs interstitially between majorite‐pyrope grains in the melt‐vein matrix. In addition, we have observed compositional zoning in majorite‐pyrope grains in the matrix of the shock‐melt vein, which has not been described previously in any shocked meteorite. Collectively, all these different lines of evidence are suggestive of a major shock event with high cooling rates. The minimum peak shock conditions are difficult to constrain, because of the uncertainties in applying experimentally determined high‐pressure phase equilibria to complex natural systems. However, our results suggest that conditions between 16 and 28 GPa and 2000–2200 °C were reached.  相似文献

Physical state of the photosphere during a 2N/M2 solar flare on July 18, 2000, was studied. We used Echelle Zeeman spectrograms obtained by V. G. Lozitsky in orthogonal circular polarizations with a solar spectrograph. Semiempirical photospheric models were constructed for three moments in time in the initial and main phases of the flare using the SIR code applied to Stokes I and V profiles of seven iron and chromium lines. The photospheric model of the flare contains two components: a magnetic-field component and nonmagnetic environment. The height distributions of the temperature, magnetic field, and line-of-sight velocity were derived. The temperature in the nonmagnetic component had a nonmonotonous run with height. The models include layers in the middle and upper photosphere in which temperature is enhanced relative to an unperturbed photosphere model. As the flare developed, the temperature in the lower layers was increasing by 500–800 K. The magnetic field increased by 0.05 T and 0.08–0.1 T in the lower and upper photosphere during the flare, respectively, with the vertical temperature gradient decreasing from 0.0012 to 0.0008 T/km. The model for the onset phase of the flare indicates that there were upflows and downflows of substance in the lower and upper photosphere, respectively. The flow velocities decreased appreciably in the main phase of the flare. The model parameters of the nonmagnetic environment were only slightly different from those of the unperturbed photosphere.  相似文献

Abstract The Lueders iron meteorite with silicate inclusions was recovered as a single specimen of ~35.4 kg in Shackelford County, Texas, in 1973 and recognized as a meteorite in 1993. Siderophile element concentrations indicate chemical classification as a low-Ni IAB iron meteorite closely related to Landes; like Landes, it has a Cu content ~4σ above the main IAB-IIICD trend and therefore we also designate Lueders as an anomalous member of IAB. The metallic host is composed of equigranular kamacite but with a suggestion of octahedral structure and with a bandwidth of 1.4 mm, suggesting structural classification as a coarse octahedrite (Og). The meteorite contains ~23 wt% of roughly millimeter to centimeter-sized angular silicate inclusions. Classification as a IAB is confirmed by O isotopic analysis of silicate inclusions. These inclusions contain an assemblage rich in silicates, troilite and graphite; lack certain minor phases (e.g., daubreelite); and have angular shapes. A variety of processes (e.g., fragmentation, partial melting, reduction) appear to have played a significant role in the formation of Lueders and all IAB iron meteorites. Petrologic and chemical differences confirm that Lueders is not paired with the widely distributed Odessa meteorite.  相似文献

In the current study we present ab initio numerical computations of the generation and propagation of longitudinal waves in magnetic flux tubes embedded in the atmospheres of late-type stars. The interaction between convective turbulence and the magnetic structure is computed and the obtained longitudinal wave energy flux is used in a self-consistent manner to excite the small-scale magnetic flux tubes. In the current study we reduce the number of assumptions made in our previous studies by considering the full magnetic wave energy fluxes and spectra as well as time-dependent ionization (TDI) of hydrogen, employing multi-level Ca II atomic models, and taking into account departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium. Our models employ the recently confirmed value of the mixing-length parameter \(\alpha=1.8\). Regions with strong magnetic fields (magnetic filling factors of up to 50%) are also considered in the current study. The computed Ca II emission fluxes show a strong dependence on the magnetic filling factors, and the effect of time-dependent ionization (TDI) turns out to be very important in the atmospheres of late-type stars heated by acoustic and magnetic waves. The emitted Ca II fluxes with TDI included into the model are decreased by factors that range from 1.4 to 5.5 for G0V and M0V stars, respectively, compared to models that do not consider TDI.The results of our computations are compared with observations. Excellent agreement between the observed and predicted basal flux is obtained. The predicted trend of Ca II emission flux with magnetic filling factor and stellar surface temperature also agrees well with the observations but the calculated maximum fluxes for stars of different spectral types are about two times lower than observations. Though the longitudinal MHD waves considered here are important for chromosphere heating in high activity stars, additional heating mechanism(s) are apparently present.  相似文献

The Multi-application Solar Telescope is a 50 cm off-axis Gregorian telescope that has been installed at the lake site of Udaipur Solar Observatory. For quasi-simultaneous photospheric and chromospheric observations, a narrow-band imager has been developed as one of the back-end instruments for this telescope. Narrow-band imaging is achieved using two lithium niobate Fabry–Perot etalons working in tandem as a filter. This filter can be tuned to different wavelengths by changing either voltage, tilt, or temperature of the etalons. To characterize the etalons, a Littrow spectrograph was set up in conjunction with a 15 cm Carl Zeiss Coudé solar telescope. The etalons were calibrated for the solar spectral lines Fe i 6173 Å, and Ca ii 8542 Å. In this work, we discuss the characterization of the Fabry–Perot etalons, specifically, the temperature and voltage tuning of the system for the spectral lines proposed for observations. We present the details of the calibration set-up and various tuning parameters. We also present solar images obtained using the system.  相似文献

Abstract— The kinetics and mechanisms of kamacite sulfurization were studied experimentally at temperatures and H2S/H2 ratios relevant to the solar nebula. Pieces of the Canyon Diablo meteorite were heated at 558 K, 613 K, and 643 K in 50 parts per million by volume (ppmv) H2S-H2 gas mixtures for up to one month. Optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses show that the morphology and crystal orientation of the resulting sulfide layers vary with both time and temperature. Electron microprobe analyses reveal three distinct phases in the reaction products: monosulfide solid solution (mss), (Fe, Ni, Co)1-xS, pentlandite (Fe, Ni, Co)9-xS8, and a P-rich phase. The bulk composition of the remnant metal was not significantly changed by sulfurization. Kamacite sulfurization at 558 K followed parabolic kinetics for the entire duration of the experiments. Sulfide layers that formed at 613 K grew linearly with time, while those that formed at 643 K initially grew linearly with time then switched to parabolic kinetics upon reaching a critical thickness. The experimental results suggest that a variety of thermodynamic, kinetic, and physical processes control the final composition and morphology of the sulfide layers. We combine morphological, x-ray diffraction, electron microprobe, and kinetic data to produce a comprehensive model of sulfide formation in the solar nebula. Then, we present a set of criteria to assist in the identification of solar nebula condensate sulfides in primitive meteorites.  相似文献

Sulphur contents and δ34S values have been determined for metallic spheroids collected from the vicinity of Meteor Crater, Arizona. Large spheroids with diameters ~ 1.3 mm contain about 20% more sulphur than do small spheroids with diameters ~ 0.5 mm. The mean δ34S value for large spheroids is + 0.23°/∞, while that for small spheroids is + 0.4°/∞, both measured relative to Canyon Diablo troilite. Abrasion experiments on large spheroids show that δ34S varies radially within them, with values of ~ 1.9δ/∞ at their surfaces, falling to zero at their centres. The favoured explanation for the observed sulphur content and δ34S patterns is low temperature oxidation during post-formation weathering.  相似文献

We have digitized the Ca ii K spectroheliograms, observed at the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak, for the period 1980 (maximum of solar cycle 21), 1985 (minimum of solar cycle 21), 1987 (beginning of the ascending phase of solar cycle 22), 1988 and 1989 (ascending phase and maximum of solar cycle 22), and 1992 (declining phase of solar cycle 22). A new method for analyzing the K spectroheliograms has been developed and applied to the K images for the time interval of 1992. Using histograms of intensity, we have segregated and measured the cumulative intensity and area of various chromospheric features like the plages, magnetic network and intranetwork elements. Also, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) derived from the histograms has been introduced as a new index for describing the chromospheric activity in the K-line. The full-disk intensity (spatial K index) has been derived from spatially-resolved K images and compared to the spectral K index derived from the line profiles for the full disk. Both the spatial K index and FWHM have been compared to the UV irradiance measured in the Mg ii h and k lines by the NOAA9 satellite and found that they are highly correlated with the Mg ii h and k c/w ratio.NRC Resident Research Associate, on leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore 560034, India.  相似文献

An empirical model of solar UV spectral irradiance has been developed that is based on observed spectral radiance measurements and full disk Ca ii K images. The Mg ii index is then calculated from the estimated spectra in a narrow wavelength range (180 Å) near the Mg ii doublet at 2800 Å. Our long term goal is to expand this wavelength range from 10 to 4000 Å in continuing studies based on spectral data covering this wavelength range (e.g. Skylab, UARS/SUSIM, TIMED/SEE, etc.). Our previous modeling effort produced spectra in this 180 Å range and the resulting Mg ii index values for the period from 1991 through 1995 and we have used observations during this time period to validate the model results. The current paper presents results from this model based on a 21-year portion of the recently digitized Ca ii K images from the Mt Wilson Observatory (MWO) film archive. Here we present details of the model, the required model modifications, and the resulting Mg ii index from 1961 through 1981. Since the NOAA Mg ii index did not begin until 1978, the present model results are compared to a Mg ii index estimated from the F10.7 radio flux over this 21-year period. The NOAA Mg ii index, which is derived from measured UV spectra, is also included for comparison from late 1978 through 1981.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss our choice of a large unbiased sample used for the survey of red giant branch stars for finding Li-rich K giants, and the method used for identifying Li-rich candidates using low-resolution spectra. The sample has 2000 giants within a mass range of 0.8 to \(3.0\textit{M}_{\odot }\). Sample stars were selected from the Hipparcos catalogue with colour (B–V) and luminosity \((\textit{L}/\textit{L}_{\odot }\)) in such way that the sample covers RGB evolution from its base towards RGB tip passing through first dredge-up and luminosity bump. Low-resolution (R \(\approx \) 2000, 3500, 5000) spectra were obtained for all sample stars. Using core strength ratios of lines at Li I 6707 Å and its adjacent line Ca I 6717 Å  we successfully identified 15 K giants with A(Li) > 1.5 dex, which are defined as Li-rich K giants. The results demonstrate the usefulness of low-resolution spectra to measure Li abundance and identify Li-rich giants from a large sample of stars in relatively shorter time periods.  相似文献

We investigated the velocity and temperature characteristics of an Ellerman bomb (EB) and its associated features based on observations made with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) and a broadband TiO filter of the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory. In the TiO images of the photospheric level, we found a granular cell expanding in two opposite directions near the site of the EB. When one end of this granule reached the EB site, the transverse speed of the tip of the expanding granule rapidly decreased and the EB brightened. The wings of the Hα profile of the EB indicated that the EB was blueshifted up to 7 km?s?1. About 260 s after the EB brightening, a surge was seen in absorption and varied from a blueshift of 20 km?s?1 to a redshift of 40 km?s?1 seen in the Hα and Ca ii 8542 Å lines. From the Doppler absorption width of the two lines determined by applying the cloud model, we estimated the mean temperature of the surge material to be about 29000 K and the mean speed of nonthermal motion to be about 11 km?s?1. We discuss the physical implications of our results in terms of magnetic reconnection and processes related to it.  相似文献

Three specimens from the pristine suite of the Tagish Lake meteorite, showing variability in texture, from relatively chondrule‐rich (specimen 5b, upper left) to chondrule‐poor (specimen 11i, right) to intermediate (specimen 11h, lower left). The textural variation is due to differences in petrographic character, as described by Blinova et al. (this issue); differences in organic matter correlate with the textural variation (Alexander et al. and Hilts et al., this issue), providing insights into parent body processing. Observational evidence suggests that both the hard X-ray and ultraviolet emission from the impulsive phase of flares result from an electron beam. We present the results of model calculations that are consistent with this theory. The impulsive phase is envisioned as occurring in many small magnetically confined loops, each of which maintains an electron beam for only a few seconds. This model successfully matches several observed aspects of the impulsive phase. The corona is heated to less than 2 × 106 K, maximum enhanced emission occurs in lines formed near 105 K, and there is only slight enhancement between 105 and 2 × 106 K. The slope of the observed relationship between hard X-ray and Ov 1371 Å emission is also matched, but the relative emission is not. The calculations indicate that UV emission lines formed below a temperature of about 105 K will arise predominantly from the chromospheric region heated by the electron beam to transition region temperatures. Emission lines formed at higher temperatures will be produced in the transition region. This should be detectable in density-sensitive line ratios. To account successfully for the impulsive UV emission, the peak temperature in the impulsively heated loops must remain below about 2 × 106 K. Thus our model implies that the impulsive heating takes place in different loops from the hotter gradual phase emission.  相似文献
