The lifetime of antimatter fragments which may enter the Earth's atmosphere in the form of meteors is determined in this paper, for cases in which the annihilation may be accompanied by the evaporation process. The antimatter object can be penetrated by the nucleon - antinucleon annihilation products, which can be generated by interactions of atoms of antimatter fragments with the atmospheric molecules. Vaporization of its own antiatoms may be followed, in case of a high rate of annihilation, so that the lifetime of the antimatter object may become shorter, compared with the case of annihilation without vapor production of the meteor. The lifetime of the antimatter fragment is dependent upon the temperature of the object and thus vaporization of such an object would last for as long as =R/, where is the intensity of evaporation, its density andR its radius.  相似文献

The momentum loss for a possible antimatter meteor entrance can be described by the combination of two terms. One which can be characterized by the mechanism of annihilation and a second one, the well known mechanism, which is common for all koinomatter (ordinary) meteors. That is, the momentum loss caused by the air molecules swept up by the moving object. We discuss, in this paper, the contribution of the rocket effect caused by the action of the secondaries which can be produced by the annihilation interactions of the antiatoms with the air molecules. The momentum loss of an iron type meteor made of antimatter, as a function of its equivalent radius R, can be described by the formula, J (MeV/c) = 8R (cm), for values of R within the range 1 cm < R < 5 cm and can be resulted by a single annihilation interaction of a nucleon-antinucleon pair.  相似文献

It is argued here that unless antimatter meteors can be shown to possess some unambiguously unique characteristic not displayed by ordinary koinomatter meteors, it will be difficult to infer their existence given the standard interpretation of meteoroid structure. It is also argued, however, that the existence of antimatter meteors is extremely unlikely.  相似文献

The hyperbolic meteor orbits among the 4,581 photographic and 62,906 radar meteors of the IAU MDC have been analysed using statistical methods. It was shown that the vast majority of hyperbolic orbits has been caused by the dispersion of determined velocities. The large proportion of hyperbolic orbits among the known meteor showers strongly suggests the hyperbolicity of the meteors is not real. The number of apparent hyperbolic orbits increases inversely proportional to the difference between the mean heliocentric velocity of meteor shower and the parabolic velocity limit. The number of hyperbolic meteors in the investigated catalogues does not, in any case, represent the number of interstellar meteors in observational data. The apparent hyperbolicity of these orbits is caused by a high spread in velocity determination, shifting a part of the data through the parabolic limit.  相似文献

Abstract— In this paper, we provide an overview of meteors with high beginning height. During the recent Leonid meteor storms, as well as within the regular double station video observations of other meteor showers, we recorded 164 meteors with a beginning height above 130 km. We found that beginning heights between 130 and 150 km are quite usual, especially for the Leonid meteor shower. Conversely, meteors with beginning heights above 160 km are very rare even among Leonids. From the meteor light curves, we are able to distinguish two different processes that govern radiation of the meteors at different altitudes. Light curves vary greatly above 130 km and exhibit sudden changes in meteor brightness. Sputtering from the meteoroid surface is the dominating process during this phase of the meteor luminous trajectory. Around 130 km, the process switches to ablation and the light curves become similar to the light curves of standard meteors. The sputtering model was successfully applied to explain the difference in the beginning heights of high‐altitude Leonid and Perseid meteors. We show also that this process in connection with high altitude fragmentation could explain the anomalously high beginning heights of several relatively faint meteors.  相似文献

The meteor radar response function is an important tool for analyzing meteor backscatter observed by radar systems. We extend previous work on the development of the response function to include a non-uniform meteor ionization profile, provided by meteor ablation theory, in contrast to what has been assumed in the past. This has the advantage that the height distribution of meteors expected to be observed by a radar meteor system may be accurately modeled. Such modeling leads to meteor height distributions that have implications for the composition of those meteoroids ablating at high altitudes which may be observed by “non-traditional” meteor radars operating at MF/HF. The response function is then employed to investigate meteor backscatter observed by narrow beam MST radars which in recent years have been used increasingly to observe meteors.  相似文献

In the present age, several techniques for the application to the observation of meteors and meteor showers have been developed in modern meteor astronomy. The initial definition for a meteor storm based on the visual observation with a Zenithal Hourly Rate of above 1000 seems insufficient now, since it only means a storm or burst of meteors in numbers and means that an eyewitness could have a chance to see a spectacular meteor show. Up to now, peoples have also recorded the meteoric flashes on the Moon during the Leonid meteor showers. Especially, the increasing activities of mankind in space for scientific, commercial and military purposes, have led to an increase in the problems concerning the safety of the satellites, space stations and astronauts. How the intense activity of a meteor storm is defined and forecast, some new points of view are needed. In this paper, several aspects about the intensity of the meteor storm are analyzed, including the number, mass, impulse, energy, electric charge, different purposes and different physical meanings. Finally, a synthetical index denoting the activity and potential threat of an intense meteor shower is suggested.  相似文献

Massive television observations of meteors aimed at verifying the existing and finding new meteor streams create the task of the reliable preliminary determination of the detected meteor membership in a particular known stream. The mostly widely used method of meteor identification is connected with the estimation of the distance between the great circle of the meteor and the point of the examined radiant. Often observers perform this estimation without checking the possibility that the same meteor belongs to another stream. When several streams occur simultaneously, many meteors can be members of two or more streams. When the determination of the meteor membership is done in a subjective way, it may lead to an overestimation of strong streams’ and an underestimation of weak streams’ activity. In this work, we describe a method and algorithm for the determination of the meteor membership in known streams which were tested using real television observations and were successfully used at INASAN. This algorithm is almost completely automatic and allows for the obtainment of additional information regarding meteor streams. We also show some results of the processing of 2254 meteors observations obtained with the FAVOR camera from July 31, 2006 to October 21, 2006 using the proposed method. The work is part of the program for the creation of the Verified Catalogue of Meteor Streams.  相似文献

The prime measurement objective of the Near Earth Object Chemical Analysis Mission (NEOCAM) is to obtain the ultraviolet spectra of meteors entering the terrestrial atmosphere from ∼125 to 300 nm in meteor showers. All of the spectra will be collected using a slitless ultraviolet spectrometer in Earth orbit. Analysis of these spectra will reveal the degree of chemical diversity in the meteors, as observed in a single meteor shower. Such meteors are traceable to a specific parent body and we know exactly when the meteoroids in a particular shower were released from that parent body (Asher, in: Arlt (ed.) Proc. International Meteor Conference, 2000; Lyytinen and van Flandern, Earth Moon Planets 82–83:149–166, 2000). By observing multiple apparitions of meteor showers we can therefore obtain quasi-stratigraphic information on an individual comet or asteroid. We might also be able to measure systematic effects of chemical weathering in meteoroids from specific parent bodies by looking for correlations in the depletions of the more volatile elements as a function of space exposure (Borovička et al., Icarus 174:15–30, 2005). By observing the relation between meteor entry characteristics (such as the rate of deceleration or breakup) and chemistry we can determine if our meteorite collection is deficient in the most volatile-rich samples. Finally, we can obtain a direct measurement of metal deposition into the terrestrial stratosphere that may act to catalyze atmospheric chemical reactions.  相似文献

We present the first clear observations of meteor shower activity from meteor-head echoes detected by a high-power large-aperture radar (HPLAR). Such observations have been performed at the Jicamarca VHF radar using its interferometric capabilities allowing the discrimination of meteor shower echoes from the much more frequent sporadic meteors. Until now, HPLARs were unable to distinguish meteor shower from the much more common sporadic meteor ones. In this work we have been able to detect and characterize the η-Aquariids (ETA) as well as the Perseids (PER) showers. The shower activity is more conspicuous for the ETA than for the PER shower due to the more favorable geometry. Namely, PER meteors come from low elevation angles, experiencing more filtering due to the combined Earth-atmosphere-radar instrument. In both cases, there is an excellent agreement between the measured mean velocity of the shower echoes and their expected velocity, within a fraction of 1 km s−1. Besides the good agreement with expected visual results, HPLARs observe meteors with a variety of particles sizes and masses, not observed by any other technique. Taking into account the different viewing volumes, compare to optical observations Jicamarca observes more than 1000 times more ETA meteors. Our results indicate that Jicamarca and other HPLARs are able to detect the echoes from meteor showers, but without interferometric capabilities such populations are difficult to identify just from their velocity distributions, particularly if their velocity distributions are expected to be similar to the more dominant distributions of sporadic meteors.  相似文献

Some results of the double station television meteor observations provided in Kiev during the Perseid shower period in years 1991 – 1993 are presented. The dependence of the beginning hights of meteors on their initial velocities based on 57 best reduced double station meteors is constructed. Exceptionaly great beginning heights of meteors are discussed, as well as the exceptional case of a Perseid bolide.  相似文献

Hyperbolic meteor orbits from the catalog of 64,650 meteors observed by the multistation video meteor network located in Japan (SonotaCo 2009) have been investigated with the aim of determining the relation between the frequency of hyperbolic and interstellar meteors. The proportion of hyperbolic meteors in the data decreased significantly (from 11.58% to 3.28%) after a selection of quality orbits, which shows its dependence on the quality of observations. Initially, the hyperbolic orbits were searched for meteors unbound due to planetary perturbation. It was determined that 22 meteors from the 7489 hyperbolic orbits in the catalog (and 2 from the selection of the orbits with the highest quality) had had a close encounter with a planet, none of which, however, produced essential changes in their orbits. Similarly, the fraction of hyperbolic orbits in the data, which could be hyperbolic by reason of a meteor's interstellar origin, was determined to be at most 3.9 × 10?2. From the statistical point of view, the vast majority of hyperbolic meteors in the database have definitely been caused by inaccuracy in the velocity determination. This fact does not necessarily assume great measurement errors, since, especially near the parabolic limit, a small error in the value of the heliocentric velocity of a meteor can create an artificial hyperbolic orbit that does not really exist. The results show that the remaining 96% of meteoroids with apparent hyperbolic orbits belong to the solar system meteoroid population. This is also supported by their high abundance (about 50%) among the meteor showers.  相似文献

The results of observations of the Orionid meteor shower are given in the period from 2006 to 2008. Observations were carried out using a highly sensitive camera FAVOR (FAst Variability Optical Registrator) a limiting magnitude of above +11.0m (for stars) and a field of view of 18° × 20°. Over the period of the shower from October 2 to November 7, 2006–2008, there were 3713 meteors. 449 of these meteors were associated with the Orionid meteor shower. The distributions of Orionid meteors by the stellar magnitude is presented. It turned out that most of meteors (65%) of this shower have a brightness of +5.0m-+7.0m. On each night of observation the index of meteor activity was calculated for Orionids.  相似文献

A digital image intensified CCD camera with an electronically gated image intensifier was used to produce very short duration images of meteors. The observational system employed a 0.40 m F/4.5 Newtonian telescope to obtain high spatial resolution. A second intensified CCD camera was used to yield height information using parallax. At a typical meteor height one pixel (for the vertically oriented system) corresponded to about 1.1 m. A sampling of 59 mainly sporadic meteors was analyzed. There is clear variability from meteor to meteor, with many meteors (nearly 50%) showing only a small amount of wake, while some meteors (approximately 20%) have the off segments completely filled in.  相似文献

Abstract— We have used a 3.0 m diameter liquid mirror telescope (LMT) coupled to a microchannel plate image‐intensified charge‐coupled device (CCD) detector to study the 1999 Leonid meteor shower. This is the largest aperture optical instrument ever utilized for meteor detection. While the observing system is sensitive down to stars of +18 astronomical magnitude under optimum conditions, when corrections for meteor motion are applied the majority of the meteors collected fall in the absolute magnitude range from +5 to +10, corresponding to photometric masses from about 10?7 to 10?9 kg. This is largely due to the fact that the field of view of the LMT was only 0.28°, so that only a small portion of the luminous meteor trail was recorded. While the flux of these small (1.4 times 10?9 kg) Leonid meteors is low (on the order of one Leonid meteor per hour per square kilometer perpendicular to the Leonid), we do have clear evidence that the Leonid stream contains particles in the mass range studied here. The data showed a possibly significant peak in Leonid flux (9.3 ± 3.5) for the 1 h period from 11:00 to 12:00 u.t. 1999 November 17 (solar longitude 234.653 to 234.695, epoch 2000.0), although the main trend of these results is a broad low‐level Leonid activity. There is evidence that small meteoroids are more widely distributed in the Leonid stream, as would be expected from cometary ejection stream models. As would be expected from an extrapolation of mass distribution indices for brighter meteors, the vast majority of meteors at this size are sporadic. The LMT is a powerful detector of sporadic meteors, with an average non‐Leonid detection rate of more than 140 meteor events per hour.  相似文献

Recently, television observations of meteors have steadily replaced photographic observations. Television recording with short exposures is a close analog of a photographic survey with a rotary shutter in the form of a system of set time marks on the meteor track. Each meteoric event is a series of recordings of separate phases of the motion of a meteor. This allows for the use of the geometric method for the determination of the motion parameters of meteors. In this work, a critique is given regarding the concept proposed by K.P. Stanyukovich in 1932–1939, and a mathematical justification of the geometric method of the analysis of the television images of meteors is given.  相似文献

Abstract— In this paper, we study the extremely high beginning parts of atmospheric trajectories of seven Leonid meteors recorded by sensitive TV systems equipped with image intensifiers up to apparent magnitude +6.5. For all seven cases, we observed comet‐like diffuse structures with sizes on the order of kilometers that developed quickly during the meteoroids' descent through the atmosphere. For the brightest event with a maximum absolute magnitude of ?12.5, we observed an arc similar to a solar protuberance and producing a jet detectable several kilometers sideways from the brightest parts of the meteor head, and moving with a velocity over 100 km/s. These jets are common features for the seven studied meteors. Precise position in trajectory, velocity, and brightness at each point is available for all seven meteors, because of double‐station records on 85 km base‐line. When these meteoroids reached 130 km height, their diffuse structures of the radiation quickly transformed to the usual meteor appearance resembling moving droplets, and meteor trains started to develop. These meteor phenomena above 130 km were not recognized before our observations, and they cannot be explained by standard ablation theory.  相似文献

We have carried out double-station TV meteor observations between 1990 and 1994. The orbits of 326 meteors have been determined from doubly observed meteors, and radiant distributions are studied. The mean magnitude of the observed meteors was as faint as +4.7, since I.I. (Image Intensifier) and Video cameras were used. Radiants were widely distributed over the celestial sphere. The velocity distribution showed some similarity with the distribution predicted by the theoretical radiant distribution from comets rather than that from asteroids. In all 13 showers including both major and minor meteor showers were detected from radiant distributions of the observed meteors; from the orbital elements and meteor velocities as well as from the radiant directions.  相似文献

A new method of processing of visual meteor data has been worked outand applied to Perseid meteor shower observations. Reduced meteor hourly rates with magnitudes brighter than +3 are proportional to meteor flux densities with a coefficient equals to the effective collecting area. Corrections due to moon light and for meteor path lenghts were applied. Our observations 1972–1979 and 1982–1990 gave similar hourly rate profiles with a maximum rate of 71 meteors at solar longitude L=140.36°. Perseids 1980 and 1981 were about 1.5 times more active. The maximum Perseid activity in 1991–1992 was 119 meteors at solar longitude 139.54° and narrow peaks are observed at the same longitude showing an enhanced activity up to 225 meteors.  相似文献
