We present BVI photometry of 190 galaxies in the central 4 ×3 deg2 region of the Fornax cluster observed with the Michigan Curtis Schmidt Telescope. Results from the Fornax Cluster Spectroscopic Survey (FCSS) and the Flair-II Fornax Surveys have been used to confirm the membership status of galaxies in the Fornax Cluster Catalogue (FCC). In our catalogue of 213 member galaxies, 92 (43 per cent) have confirmed radial velocities.
In this paper, we investigate the surface brightness–magnitude relation for Fornax cluster galaxies. Particular attention is given to the sample of cluster dwarfs and the newly discovered ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) from the FCSS. We examine the reliability of the surface brightness–magnitude relation as a method for determining cluster membership and find that at surface brightnesses fainter than 22 mag arcsec−2, it fails in its ability to distinguish between cluster members and barely resolved background galaxies. Cluster members exhibit a strong surface brightness–magnitude relation. Both elliptical (E) galaxies and dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies increase in surface brightness as luminosity decreases. The UCDs lie off the locus of the relation.
B − V   and   V − I   colours are determined for a sample of 113 cluster galaxies and the colour–magnitude relation is explored for each morphological type. The UCDs lie off the locus of the colour–magnitude relation. Their mean   V − I   colours (∼1.09) are similar to those of globular clusters associated with NGC 1399. The location of the UCDs on both surface brightness and colour–magnitude plots supports the 'galaxy threshing' model for infalling nucleated dwarf elliptical (dE, N) galaxies.  相似文献

We present evidence for non-Gaussian velocity fields within the cores of luminous elliptical galaxies. This evidence is based on high signal-to-noise ratio, medium-resolution spectroscopy of the cores of early-type members of the Virgo and Coma Clusters obtained with the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO 3.5 m telescope. The Virgo data were acquired using an integral-field unit (DensePak), which allows the velocity field to be sampled over a variety of spatial scales. The Coma data were obtained through single 2&arcsec; diameter fibers. The cross-correlation profiles of luminous elliptical galaxies show considerable structure, often having several features with amplitudes as high as 10% that of the cross-correlation peak itself. This structure is most obvious within a radius of 1&farcs;5 (at Virgo), or 相似文献

A study of collisions between spiral and elliptical galaxies (approximated as composite spherical masses) is made to assess the changes undergone by the elliptical. Results indicate that unless the spiral is extremely massive compared to the elliptical, the elliptical is almost unaffected, while the spiral is strongly affected. For the frequent type of collision between equally massive spiral and elliptical galaxies, the elliptical is negligibly affected, while disruptive effects set in the spiral. However, the stellar pattern of the elliptical is changed and the stars are found to crowd in faint shells after the collision. The consequences of these results are explored in the context of the morphology-density relationship and the elliptical companions of ring galaxies.  相似文献

Galaxy harassment has been proposed as a physical process that morphologically transforms low surface density disc galaxies into dwarf elliptical galaxies in clusters. It has been used to link the observed very different morphology of distant cluster galaxies (relatively more blue galaxies with 'disturbed' morphologies) with the relatively large numbers of dwarf elliptical galaxies found in nearby clusters. One prediction of the harassment model is that the remnant galaxies should lie on low surface brightness tidal streams or arcs. We demonstrate in this paper that we have an analysis method that is sensitive to the detection of arcs down to a surface brightness of 29 B μ and we then use this method to search for arcs around 46 Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical galaxies. We find no evidence for tidal streams or arcs and consequently no evidence for galaxy harassment as a viable explanation for the relatively large numbers of dwarf galaxies found in the Virgo cluster.

The location of galaxies in 377 rich Abell galaxy clusters is discussed. We compared the distributions of galaxies in the sample containing all galaxies with the sample compiled from the 20 brightest objects. Counts in circular sectors with angle width equal to 30î show isotropy. Only in the case of BM I clusters and the coordinate system related to the cluster major axis did we find anisotropic distributions. We investigated also the distributions of galaxy position angles within clusters exhibiting isotropy. The structure position angles for both samples have been studied as well. They appeared to be different. The difference in location of galaxies in the case of cD clusters, as well as the more elliptical shape and different position angles of samples containing bright galaxies is observed.  相似文献

Optical warp in elliptical galaxies has been confirmed. A system for detecting and defining a criteria of warp has been tried and applied to sample of eleven elliptical galaxies by means of relating the defined warped areas to the total area of the isophotae.  相似文献

We have measured central line strengths for a complete sample of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster, comprising 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies, more luminous than M B  = −17. In contrast to the elliptical galaxies in the sample studied by González (and recently revisited by Trager) we find that the Fornax ellipticals follow the locus of galaxies of fixed age in Worthey's models and have metallicities varying from roughly solar to three times solar. The lenticular galaxies, however, exhibit a substantial spread to younger luminosity-weighted ages, indicating a more extended star formation history. We present measurements of the more sensitive indices: C4668 and HγA; these confirm and reinforce the conclusions that the elliptical galaxies are coeval and that only the lenticular galaxies show symptoms of late star formation. The inferred difference in the age distribution between lenticular and elliptical galaxies is a robust conclusion as the models generate consistent relative ages using different age and metallicity indicators even though the absolute ages remain uncertain. The young luminosity-weighted ages of the S0s in the Fornax cluster are consistent with the recent discovery that the fraction of S0 galaxies in intermediate-redshift clusters is a factor of 2–3 lower than found locally, and suggest that a fraction of the cluster spiral galaxy population has evolved to quiescence in the 5-Gyr interval from z  = 0.5 to the present. Two of the faintest lenticular galaxies in our sample have blue continua and strong Balmer-line absorption, suggesting starbursts ≲2 Gyr ago. These may be the low-redshift analogues of the starburst or post-starburst galaxies seen in clusters at z  = 0.3, similar to the Hδ-strong galaxies in the Coma cluster.  相似文献

We simulate the chemodynamical evolution of elliptical galaxies using our GRAPE-SPH code. We succeed in reproducing the observed variety of the radial metallicity gradients, from which we discuss the origin of elliptical galaxies. We summarise the results of our recently completed HST R-band study of low-redshift (0.1<z<0.25) FRII radio galaxies along with the host galaxies of quasars of similar redshifts. We find that, like radio galaxies, the hosts of radio-loud quasars and all but the least luminous radio-quiet quasars are massive elliptical galaxies with relatively large scalelengths (≃10 kpc) and luminosities (>2L*). Indeed the quasar hosts are essentially indistinguishable from the radio galaxies in our sample. Apart from the nuclear activity there is little to distinguish the AGN hosts from inactive massive elliptical galaxies.  相似文献

Groups of galaxies are studied to identify galaxies of different morphological type in terms of their position relative to the centers of the groups and in terms of their peculiar radial velocities within the groups. The following results are obtained: (1) The mean distances of the galaxies relative to the centers of the groups gradually increase in the transition from the elliptical to the lenticular and spiral galaxies. However, galaxies classified in the subtypes of early or late elliptical are not distinguishable on the basis of this parameter. (b) The peculiar radial velocities of the elliptical, lenticular, and spiral galaxies in the groups are statistically indistinguishable. However, spiral galaxies falling in the early and late subtypes are distinguishable in terms of this parameter. The former subtype exhibit a lesser mean pecular radial velocity than the latter subtype.Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 37, No. 2, pp. 301–305, March–April, 1994.The present study was supported by grant ESO C & EE No. A-04-069.  相似文献

The modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND), suggested by Milgrom as an alternative to dark matter, implies that isothermal spheres with a fixed anisotropy parameter should exhibit a near-perfect relation between the mass and velocity dispersion of the form M ∝ σ  4. This is consistent with the observed Faber–Jackson relation for elliptical galaxies: a luminosity–velocity dispersion relation with large scatter. However, the observable global properties of elliptical galaxies comprise a three-parameter family; they lie on a 'fundamental plane' in a logarithmic space consisting of central velocity dispersion, effective radius ( r e) and luminosity. The scatter perpendicular to this plane is significantly less than that about the Faber–Jackson relation. I show here that, in order to match the observed properties of elliptical galaxies with MOND, models must deviate from being strictly isothermal and isotropic; such objects can be approximated by high-order polytropic spheres with a radial orbit anisotropy in the outer regions. MOND imposes boundary conditions on the inner Newtonian regions which restrict these models to a dynamical fundamental plane of the form where the exponents may differ from the Newtonian expectations ( α =2, γ =1). Scatter about this plane is relatively insensitive to the necessary deviations from homology.  相似文献

Convolution methods for modelling of astronomical seeing effects have been investigated. The advantages and disadvantages of several techniques are discussed, and particular attention is given to the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. This method is then applied to two classes of problems, the structure of cores of elliptical galaxies, appearance of distant galaxies and the consequences of seeing effects in some cosmological tests. Estimates are presented for dimming of the central surface brightness and changes in the apparent core radius for elliptical galaxies, as well as seeing-induced changes in ellipticity. Modelling of galaxies with stellar nuclei has also been performed. Some consequences of these effects in investigations of dynamics of elliptical galaxies are addressed briefly. The influence of seeing in observational cosmology is discussed in the context of Hubble diagram (m-z) tests. It is shown that inadequate compensation for seeing effects can seriously distort the conclusions in such tests. Some suggestions for future work in this direction are offered.  相似文献

Using the photometric data on FR II radio galaxies obtained during the Big Trio program and data from other sources, we confirmed the stable correlation between the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts up to z ~ 4, determined from the evolutionary synthetic spectra of elliptical galaxies. This is confirmation of the theoretical predictions of the existence of a stellar population at high redshifts and its subsequent evolution corresponding to the population of giant elliptical galaxies.  相似文献

The morphological content of Markarian galaxies (MG) in groups and in single galaxies is examined. It is found that MG do not conform to the long established rule that the relative number of elliptical and lenticular galaxies in groups is higher than in single galaxies.  相似文献

The analysis of the four-colour maps of galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) has revealed, in the sample of 0.4< z <1 early-type field galaxies, the existence of ellipticals with a predominantly old coeval stellar population. However, there is another, unexpected, category of HDF early-type galaxies, in which the galaxy core is significantly bluer than the outer regions. We demonstrate that these colour gradients are predicted by the multizone chemodynamical model for the evolution of elliptical galaxies.
We suggest that the colour gradient could be used as a chronometer for the evolution of elliptical galaxies: galaxies younger than a few Gyr exhibit cores bluer than the surrounding galaxy as a result of ongoing star formation, while more evolved galaxies have redder cores because of metallicity gradients increasing toward the centre.  相似文献

We show that there is a correlation between the occurrence of supernovae and nuclear activity in elliptical galaxies. Both shun a canonical elliptical and occur only in those ellipticals which accrete gas. We also show that the hypothesis that all SNI come from short-lived stars is consistent with the colour observations of elliptical galaxies. We propose that there is a class of intrisically rounder, massive, dusty, metal-rich ellipticals which produce supernovae and are more likely to contain a radio source.  相似文献

We have determined a dust-free colour–magnitude (CM) relation for spiral galaxies, by using I  −  K colours in edge-on galaxies above the plane. We find that the scatter in this relation is small and approximately as large as can be explained by observational uncertainties. The slope of the near-IR CM relation is steeper for spirals than for elliptical galaxies. We suggest two possible explanations. First, the difference could be caused by vertical colour gradients in spiral galaxies. In that case these gradients should be similar for all galaxies, on average ∼0.15 dex in [Fe/H] per scaleheight, and should increase for later galaxy types. The most likely explanation, however, is that spirals and ellipticals have intrinsically different CM relations. This means that the stars in spirals are younger than those in ellipticals. The age, however, or the fraction of young stars in spiral galaxies would be determined solely by the luminosity of the galaxy, and not by its environment.  相似文献

The discovery of a flux excess in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of elliptical galaxies was a major surprise in 1969. While it is now clear that this UV excess is caused by an old population of hot helium-burning stars without large hydrogen-rich envelopes, rather than young stars, their origin has remained a mystery. Here we show that these stars most likely lost their envelopes because of binary interactions, similar to the hot subdwarf population in our own Galaxy. We have developed an evolutionary population synthesis model for the FUV excess of elliptical galaxies based on the binary model developed by Han et al. for the formation of hot subdwarfs in our Galaxy. Despite its simplicity, it successfully reproduces most of the properties of elliptical galaxies with a UV excess: the range of observed UV excesses, both in  (1550 − V )  and  (2000 − V )  , and their evolution with redshift. We also present colour–colour diagrams for use as diagnostic tools in the study of elliptical galaxies. The model has major implications for understanding the evolution of the UV excess and of elliptical galaxies in general. In particular, it implies that the UV excess is not a sign of age, as had been postulated previously, and predicts that it should not be strongly dependent on the metallicity of the population, but exists universally from dwarf ellipticals to giant ellipticals.  相似文献

The stellar populations in M31 and its companions are reviewed from both historical and more modern contexts. Recent data for nearby resolved galaxies suggest that a revision of Baade's original population concept, particularly as applied to elliptical galaxies, is required. In addition, these new data highlight the difficulties in interpreting the data for, and the lack of direct information on, the more distant giant elliptical galaxies being used for cosmological studies.
