Measurements of uptake rates of inorganic (NO3 and NH4+) and organic (urea, glycine, and glutamic acid) N, and indirect estimates of total N uptake by bacteria, were made in four contrasting environments in sub-tropical Hong Kong waters in summer of 2008. In addition, the effects of several days of rain on N uptake rates were studied in eastern waters. Although ambient NO3 was the dominant form of N in Hong Kong waters, the dominant N form taken up by phytoplankton was usually NH4+ and organic N, including urea and amino acids, rather than NO3. Hence, because of the low NO3 uptake, there was a long turnover time for NO3 (100 days), and most of the NO3 was apparently transported offshore into deeper shelf waters. In eastern waters where NH4+ was undetectable, NO3 uptake rates were positively correlated with phytoplankton cell size. In contrast, potential rates of glutamic acid uptake were negatively correlated with phytoplankton size. N uptake rates in the smaller size fraction (0.7–2.8 μm) were less affected by the rain event, and smaller phytoplankton appeared to outcompete larger cells after several days of rain. The surface (PN)-specific N uptake rates in the >8-μm fraction decreased from 0.02 to 0.0001 h−1, while the smaller fraction only exhibited a one- to threefold decrease after the rainfall. In contrast, bacterial production and N uptake were not affected by the rain event, and bacteria N uptake accounted for 10–60% of the total N uptake by phytoplankton.  相似文献

Surveys were conducted in April and June 1995 to quantify the uptake of dissolved nutrients in a highly turbid estuary (the Humber, United Kingdom) and to determine the factors controlling nutrient uptake rates. A combination of isotope labelling methods were used in conjunction with on-deck incubation techniques to estimate the uptake of dissolved nutrients (PO4 3?, NH4 +, NO3 ?, and urea) in surface samples collected from coastal waters. Similarly, isotope labelling and laboratory incubgation techniques were employed to estimate dissolved nitrogen uptake (NH4 +, NO3 ?, and urea) in surface samples collected from the estuary mouth. Nutrient uptake rates were at the low end of ranges for coastal and estuarine environments reported in the literature. Concentrations of chlorophyll and the availability of photosynthetically active radiation were identified as potentially important factors controlling the uptake rates of nutrients. Uptake rates of dissolved nitrogen in the Humber mouth appeared to be related to the location of smapling sites. Depletion rates of dissolved nutrients in situ were estimated on the basis of integrated water column nutrient uptake rates and indicated assimilation of up to 16% of nutrients in the entire water column. Estimated depletion rates did not indicate preferential loss of any of the nutrient species investigated.  相似文献

Electrical conductivity of saturated soil extracts (ECe) in three reclaimed tideland (RTL) soils on the west coast of Korea decreased with time since reclamation, indicating natural desalinization through leaching of salts by precipitation water. Soil N concentration increased with decreasing ECe. With the increase in soil N concentration, the δ15N decreased, likely caused by the input of 15N-depleted N sources. As N2-fixing plant species were found in the oldest RTL, atmospheric N2 fixation likely contributed to the increase in soil N concentration in the oldest RTL. Negative δ15N (−7.1 to −2.0‰) of total inorganic N (NH4 ++NO3 ) and published data on N deposition near the study area indicate that atmospheric N deposition might be another source of N in the RTLs. Meanwhile, the consistently negative δ15N of soil NO3 excluded N input from chemical fertilizer through groundwater flow as a potential N source, since NO3 in groundwater generally have a positive δ15N. The patterns of δ15N of NH4 + (+2.3 to +5.1‰) and NO3 (−9.2 to −5.0‰) suggested that nitrification was an active process that caused 15N enrichment in NH4 + but denitrification was probably minimal which would otherwise have caused 15N enrichment in NO3 . A quantitative approach on N budget would provide a better understanding of soil N dynamics in the studied RTLs.  相似文献

The concentrations of N, P and Fe in surface sediments and interstitial and overlying (bottom and surface) waters of the Ashtamudi estuary located in the southwest coast of India are reported along with the various chemical species of N (NO2–N, NO3–N, NH3–N and total N) and P (organic P, inorganic P and total P) in interstitial and overlying waters and discussed in terms of the physico-chemical environment of the system. The interstitial water exhibits higher salinity values compared to bottom and surface waters, indicating the coupled effects of salt-wedge phenomena and gravitational convection of more saline-denser marine water downward through surface sediments. N, P and Fe as well as their chemical forms are enriched in the interstitial water compared to bottom and surface waters. However, the dissolved oxygen (DO) shows an opposite trend. The marked enrichment of NH3–N in the interstitial water and its marginal presence in bottom and surface waters, together with the substantial decrease in the DO concentrations of bottom water and consequent increase in the concentrations of NO2–N and NO3–N in interstitial and bottom waters, points to the nitrification process operating in the sediment-water interface of the Ashtamudi estuary. The enrichment of total N, P and Fe in the interstitial water compared to the overlying counterparts and the positive correlation of sediment N, P and Fe with mud contents as well as organic carbon indicate that these elements are liberated during the early diagenetic decomposition of organic matter trapped in estuarine muds. Phytoplankton uptake rates of ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate (NO3 ), and urea were measured at various depths (light levels) in Hong Kong waters during the summer of 2008 using 15N tracer techniques in order to determine which form of nitrogen (N) supported algal growth. Four regions were sampled, two differentially impacted by Pearl River discharge, one impacted by Hong Kong sewage discharge, and a site beyond these influences. Spatial differences in nutrient concentrations, ratios, and phytoplankton biomass were large. Dissolved nutrient ratios suggested phosphorus (P) limitation throughout the region, largely driven by high N loading from the Pearl River in summer. NH4 + and urea made up generally ≥50% of the total N taken up and the f ratio averaged 0.26. Even at the river-impacted site where concentrations of NO3 were >20 μM N, NH4 + comprised >60% of the total N uptake. Inhibition experiments demonstrated that NO3 uptake rates were reduced by 40% when NH4 + was >5 μM N. The relationship between the total specific uptake rates of N (sum of all measured substrates, V, per hour) and the chlorophyll a-specific rates (micromolars of N per microgram of Chl a per hour) varied spatially with phytoplankton biomass. Highest uptake rates and biomass were observed in southern waters, suggesting that P limitation and other factors (i.e., flushing rate) controlled production inshore and that the unincorporated N (mainly NO3 ) was transported offshore. These results suggest that, at the beginning of summer, inshore algal blooms are fueled primarily by NH4 + and urea, rather than NO3 , from the Pearl River discharge. When NH4 + and urea are depleted, then NO3 is taken up and can increase the magnitude of the bloom.  相似文献

Widespread use of septic tanks in the Florida Keys increase the nutrient concentrations of limestone groundwaters that discharge into shallow nearshore waters, resulting in coastal eutrophication. This study characterizes watershed nutrient inputs, transformations, and effects along a land-sea gradient stratified into four ecosystems that occur with increasing distance from land: manmade canal systems (receiving waters of nutrient inputs), seagrass meadows, patch reefs, and offshore bank reefs. Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), the primary limiting nutrient, was significantly elevated in canal systems compared to the other ecosystems, while dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN; NH4 + and NO3 ?) a secondary limiting nutrient, was elevated both in canal systems and seagrass meadows. SRP and NH4 + concentrations decreased to low concentrations within approximately 1 km and 3 km from land, respectively. DIN and SRP accounted for their greatest contribution (up to 30%) of total N and P pools in canals, compared to dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) that dominated (up to 68%) the total N and P pools at the offshore bank reefs. Particulate N and P fractions were also elevated (up to 48%) in canals and nearshore seagrass meadows, indicating rapid biological uptake of DIN and SRP into organic particles. Chlorophylla and turbidity were also elevated in canal systems and seagrass meadows; chlorophylla was maximal during summer when maximum watershed nutrient input occurs, whereas turbidity was maximal during winter due to seasonally maximum wind conditions and sediment resuspension. DO was negatively correlated with NH4 + and SRP; hypoxia (DO<2.5 mg l?1) frequently occurred in nutrient-enriched canal systems and seagrass meadows, especially during the warm summer months. These findings correlate with recent (<5 years) observations of increasing algal blooms, seagrass epiphytization and die-off, and loss of coral cover on patch and bank reef ecosystems, suggesting that nearshore waters of the Florida Keys have entered a stage of critical eutrophication.  相似文献

The Pomeranian Bay is a coastal region fed by the Oder River, one of the seven largest Baltic rivers, whose waters flow through a large and complex estuarine system before entering the bay. Nutrients (NO3 , NO2 , NH4 +, Ntot, PO4 3−, Ptot, DSi), chlorophylla concentrations, oxygen content, salinity, and temperature were measured in the Pomeranian Bay in nine seasonally distributed cruises during 1993–1997. Strong spatial and temporal patterns were observed and they were governed by: the seasonally variable riverine water-nutrient discharges, the seasonally variable uptake of nutrients and their cycling in the river estuary and the Bay, the character of water exchange between the Pomeranian Bay and the Szczecin Lagoon, and the water flow patterns in the Bay that are dominated by wind-driven circulation. Easterly winds resulted in water and nutrient transport along the German coastline, while westerly winds confined the nutrient rich riverine waters to the Polish coast and transported them eastward beyond the study area. Two water masses, coastal and open, characterized by different chemical and physical parameters and chla content were found in the Bay independently of the season. The role of the Oder estuary in nutrient transformation, as well as the role of temperature in transformation processes is stressed in the paper. The DIN:DIP:DSi ratio indicated that phosphorus most probably played a limiting role in phytoplankton production in the Bay in spring, while nitrogen did the same in summer. During the spring bloom, predominated by diatoms, the DSi:DIN ratio dropped to 0.1 in the coastal waters and to 0.6 in the open bay waters, pointing to silicon limitation of diatom growth, similar to what is being observed in other Baltic regions.  相似文献

A “snap shot” survey of the Mississippi estuary was made during a period of low river discharge, when the estuarine mixing zone was within the deltaic channels. Concentrations of H+, Ca2+, inorganic phosphorus and inorganic carbon suggest that the waters of the river and the low salinity (<5‰) portion of the estuary are near saturation with respect to calcite and sedimentary calcium phosphate. An input of oxidized nitrogen species and N2O was observed in the estuary between 0 and 4‰ salinity. The concentrations of dissolved NH4 + and O2, over most of the estuary, appeared to be influenced by decomposition of terrestrial organic matter in bottom sediments. The estuarine bottom also appears to be a source of CH4 which has been suggested to originate from petroleum shipping and refining operations. Estuarine mixing with offshore Gulf waters was the dominant influence on distributions of dissolved species over most of the estuary (i.e., from salinities >5‰). The phytoplankton abundance (measured as chlorophylla) increased as the depth of the mixed layer decreased in a manner consistent with that expected for a light-limited ecosystem. Fluxes of NO3 ?+NO2 ? and soluble inorganic phosphorus to the Gulf of Mexico were estimated to be 3.4±0.2×103 g N s?1 and 1.9±0.2 g P s?1 respectively, at the time of this study.  相似文献

Sediment-water oxygen and nutrient (NH4 +, NO3 ?+NO2 ?, DON, PO4 3?, and DSi) fluxes were measured in three distinct regions of Chesapeake Bay at monthly intervals during 1 yr and for portions of several additional years. Examination of these data revealed strong spatial and temporal patterns. Most fluxes were greatest in the central bay (station MB), moderate in the high salinity lower bay (station SB) and reduced in the oligohaline upper bay (station NB). Sediment oxygen consumption (SOC) rates generally increased with increasing temperature until bottom water concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO) fell below 2.5 mg l?1, apparently limiting SOC rates. Fluxes of NH4 + were elevated at temperatures >15°C and, when coupled with low bottom water DO concentrations (<5 mg l?1), very large releases (>500 μmol N m?2 h?1) were observed. Nitrate + nitrite (NO3 ?+NO2 ?) exchanges were directed into sediments in areas where bottom water NO3 ?+NO2 ? concentrations were high (>18 μM N); sediment efflux of NO3 ?+NO2 ? occurred only in areas where bottom water NO3 ?+NO2 ? concentrations were relatively low (<11 μM N) and bottom waters well oxygenated. Phosphate fluxes were small except in areas of hypoxic and anoxic bottom waters; in those cases releases were high (50–150 μmol P m?2 h?1) but of short duration (2 mo). Dissolved silicate (DSi) fluxes were directed out of the sediments at all stations and appeared to be proportional to primary production in overlying waters. Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was released from the sediments at stations NB and SB and taken up by the sediments at station MB in summer months; DON fluxes were either small or noninterpretable during cooler months of the year. It appears that the amount and quality of organic matter reaching the sediments is of primary importance in determining the spatial variability and interannual differences in sediment nutrient fluxes along the axis of the bay. Surficial sediment chlorophyll-a, used as an indicator of labile sediment organic matter, was highly correlated with NH4 ?, PO4 3?, and DSi fluxes but only after a temporal lag of about 1 mo was added between deposition events and sediment nutrient releases. Sediment O:N flux ratios indicated that substantial sediment nitrification-denitrification probably occurred at all sites during winter-spring but not summer-fall; N:P flux ratios were high in spring but much less than expected during summer, particularly at hypoxic and anoxic sites. Finally, a comparison of seasonal N and P demand by phytoplankton with sediment nutrient releases indicated that the sediments provide a substantial fraction of nutrients required by phytoplankton in summer, but not winter, especially in the mid bay region.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the interaction between the Atchafalaya River and the Atchafalaya Delta estuarine complex. Measurements of suspended sediments, inorganic nutrients (NO3 ?, NH4 +, PO4 3?), chlorophylla (chla), and-salinity were taken monthly from December 1996 to January 1998. These data were compiled by season, and the Atchafalaya River plume data were also analyzed using the Generalized Additive Model technique. There were significant decreases in NO3 ? concentrations during summer, fall, and winter as river water passed through the estuary, that were attributable to chemical and biological processes rather than dilution with ambient water. In some regions there were higher chla concentrations during summer and fall compared to winter and spring, when river discharge and the introduction of inorganic nutrients were highest, suggesting biological processes were active during this study. The presence of NH4 +, as a percentage of available dissolved inorganic nitrogen, increased with distance from the Atchafalaya River, indicative of remineralization processes and NO3 ? reduction. Mean PO4 3? concentrations were often higher in the estuarine regions compared to the Atchafalaya River. During summer total suspended solid (TSS) concentrations increased with distance from the river mouth, suggesting a turbidity maximum. Highest chla concentrations were found in the bayous and shallow water bodies of the Terrebonne marshes, as were the lowest TSS concentrations. The low chla concentrations found in other areas of this study, despite high inorganic nutrient concentrations, suggest light limitation as the major control of phytoplankton growth. Salinity reached near seawater concentrations at the outer edge of the Atchafalaya River plume, but much lower salinities (<10 psu) were observed at all other regions. The Atchafalaya Delta estuarine complex buffers the impact of the Atchafalaya River on the Louisiana coastal shelf zone, with a 41% of 47% decrease in Atchafalaya River NO3 ? concentrations before reaching Gulf waters.  相似文献

Eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs has become a worldwide environmental problem, and nitrogen (N) has been recognized as one of the key factors responsible for eutrophication. Nitrogen adsorbed on sediments may be released via chemical and biological processes under changing environmental conditions. Spatial distributions of concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (NH4 +–N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3 ?–N) and total nitrogen (TN) were investigated in sediments and overlying water of Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China. The concentration of TN in the sediments exhibited strong spatial variation with relatively high values in the eastern part and relatively low values in the southern part of the lake. The TN concentration in the water of different regions of Dongting Lake was affected by the internal load of sediment N. The vertical distribution of TN in sediment cores showed a decreasing trend with an increase in depth. Concentrations of NH4 +–N in the sediment cores decreased with the depth increase until 6–8 cm and then increased slowly. However, concentrations of NO3 ?–N in the sediment cores showed an opposite trend from those of NH4 +–N. A kinetic release experiment of NH4 +–N showed that the maximum release rate occurred in the first 5 min and the amount of NH4 +–N release reached 77.93–86.34 % of the total amount in 0–10 min. The release of NH4 +–N in the surface sediments of Dongting Lake fits a first-order kinetics function.  相似文献

There is growing interest in applying ??15N in biota as an indicator of anthropogenic nutrient inputs to coastal environments because changes in ??15N correlate to inputs of land-based nutrients. In complex coastal receiving waters, however, land-use effects on biota ??15N may be masked by local hydrologic processes, especially exchange with coastal waters of different geochemical character. We examined ??15N differences among larval fish, a novel biotic indicator, in coastal receiving waters at both among and within watershed scales. Our goal was to characterize how hydrologic processes within coastal river mouths and embayments mediate the effect of land-based N sources on larval fish ??15N. We sampled three Lake Superior river-embayment systems from watersheds that span a large population density gradient. Over all stations, mean fish ??15N ranged from 2.7??? to 10.8???. Within each system, we found a different pattern in ??15N across the river?Clake transition zone. Correlations between fish ??15N and water quality, particularly NH 4 + and total nitrogen, were highly significant and corresponded to known differences in sewage waste water inputs. A multivariate model that included both watershed-based population density and NH 4 + was found to provide the best fit to the ??15N data among a series of multi- and univariate candidate models. These results demonstrate that: (1) fish larvae ??15N responded at within watershed scales, and (2) within coastal receiving waters, fish larvae ??15N was related to waste water inputs at the watershed scale; however, expression at specific locations within a coastal system was strongly influenced by local hydrologic processes.  相似文献

Meiliang Bay and Gonghu Bay, in the north of Taihu Lake, are important water sources for the city of Wuxi, and increased eutrophication now threatens the safety of drinking water. The distribution of nitrogen (N) speciation and source of N in the surface waters in the north of Taihu Lake is studied, which was an important first step in controlling N pollution. The result shows that the average concentration of ammonia (NH4 +) and nitrate (NO3 ?) of surface water in Meiliang Bay was 0.32 and 0.35 mg/L, while 0.21 and 0.74 mg/L of Gonghu Bay, in which both bays had serious nitrate pollution. The concentrations of NH4 + and NO3 ? in the surface water of the two bays had a trend of gradual decrease from north to south. The maximum concentrations of NH4 + and NO3 ? of two bays were observed near the inflowing rivers, and the maximum concentrations of NH4 + in surface water of two bays were 0.49 and 0.61, and 0.77 and 1.38 mg/L of NO3 ?. The concentration of NH4 + in the interstitial water of the two bays had a trend of gradual decrease from west to east, but NO3 ? had the opposite tendency. The maximum concentrations of NH4 + in the interstitial water of the two bays were 5.88 and 4.64, and 3.58 and 7.18 mg/L of NO3 ?. The exchangeable NH4 + content in the sediment of Meiliang Bay had a trend of gradual decrease from north to south, but Gonghu Bay showed the reverse. The exchangeable NO3 ? content in the sediment of Meiliang Bay had a trend of gradual decrease from east to west, but a decreasing trend from north to south was observed in Gonghu Bay. The maximum concentrations of exchangeable NH4 + were determined, and the values were 96.25 and 74.90 mg/kg, as well as NO3 ? with the values of 12.06 and 7.08 mg/kg. Chemical fertilizer and domestic sewage were the major sources of nitrate in surface water of Gonghu Bay, contributing 39.16 and 47.79%, respectively. Domestic sewage was the major source of nitrate in Meiliang Bay, contributing 84.79%. The denitrification process in Gonghu Bay was more apparent than in Meiliang Bay. Mixing and dilution processes had important effects on changing the concentration of nitrate transportation in the two bays.  相似文献

In this study rates of oxygen, ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate (NO3 ), nitrite (NO2 ), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, nitrogen (N) fixation, nitrification, and denitrification were compared between two intertidal sites for which there is an abundant global literature, muddy and sandy sediments, and two sites representing the rocky intertidal zone where biogeochemical processes have scarcely been investigated. In almost all sites oxygen production rates greatly exceeded oxygen consumption rates. During daylight, NH4 + and NO3 uptake rates together with ammonification could supply the different N requirements of the primary producer communities at all four sites; N assimilation by benthic or epilithic primary producers was the major process of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) removal; N fixation, nitrification, and denitrification were minor processes in the overall light DIN cycle. At night, distinct DIN cycling processes took place in the four environments, denitrification rates ranged from 9 ± 2 to 360 ± 30 μmol N2 m−2 h−1, accounting for 10–48% of the water column NO3 uptake; nitrification rates varied from 0 to 1712 ± 666 μmol NH4 + m−2 h−1. A conceptual model of N cycle dynamics showed major differences between intertidal sediment and rocky sites in terms of the mean rates of DIN net fluxes and the processes involved, with rocky biofilm showing generally higher fluxes. Of particular significance, the intertidal rocky biofilms released 10 times the amount of N2O produced in intertidal sediments (up to 17 ± 6 μmol N2O m−2 h−1), representing the highest N2O release rates ever recorded for marine systems. The biogeochemical contributions of intertidal rocky substrata to estuarine and coastal processes warrant future detailed investigation.  相似文献

Tidal marshes act as a buffer system for nutrients in the pore water and play important roles in controlling the budget of nutrients and pollutants that reach the sea. Spatial and seasonal dynamics of pore water nutrients were surveyed in three tidal marshes (Chongming Island, Hengsha Island, and Fengxian tidal flat) near the Yangtze Estuary and Hangzhou Bay from August 2007 to May 2008. Nutrient variations in pore water closely followed seawater quality in the estuaries, while the average concentration of NH4 +–N, the main form of inorganic nitrogen in pore water, was over two orders of magnitude higher than that in seawater which was dominated by nitrate. NH4 +–N export (13.81 μmol m?2 h?1) was lower than the import of (NO3 ?+NO2 ?)–N (?24.17 μmol m?2 h?1) into sediment over the 1-year period, hence reducing N-eutrophication in coastal waters. The export of SiO3 2?–Si and PO4 3?–P from tidal marshes regulated nutrient level and composition and lifted the ratio beyond potentidal element limitation in the coastal system. Moreover, macrophyte plants (Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis) played significant roles in controlling nutrient concentration in pore water and its exchange between marshes and estuaries. Fengxian marsh was characterized by higher nutrient concentrations and fluxes than other marshes in response to the more serious eutrophication in Hangzhou Bay than in the Yangtze Estuary.  相似文献

Concentrations of nutrients (NO3 ?, NO2 ?, NH4 +, PO4 3?, and dissolved SiO2) were examined in three North China estuaries—the Luanhe, Shuangtaizihe, and Yalujiang. These riverine-estuarine systems provide distinct geographic and hydrodynamic conditions, that is, a shallow water zone embraced by shoals and sandbars (Luanhe), the confluence of two streams in the upper estuary with different water and sediment loads, and a turbidity maximum in the upper estuarine mixing zone (Yalujiang). Nutrient element concentrations in these rivers are high in comparison with large, less disturbed systems but similar to those from polluted and/or eutrophic European and North American rivers. This is attributed to intensive weathering and erosion and extensive use of chemical fertilizers. In the fresh-marine waters mixing zone, nutrient species can behave either conservatively or nonconservatively, or both. Wherever nonconservative behaviours of nutrient elements are observed, remobilization from solid phases is probably the predominant mechanism. The extrapolation of dilution curves to the fresh water end-members gives estimated riverine concentrations, which can be between two and ten times higher than those from field observations. Taking into account the high N:P ratios (102–104) from North China rivers and very low concentrations of nitrogen species in the Northwest Pacific coastal oceans (e.g., Yellow Sea), the estuaries in this study may act as regions in which production is limited by phosphorus to regions in which production is limited by nitrogen.  相似文献

In an attempt to more fully understand the dissolved inorganic nitrogen dynamics of the Neuse River estuary, 15NH4 + and 15NO3 ? uptake rates were measured and daily depth-integrated rates calculated for seven stations distributed along the salinity gradient. Measurements were made at 2–3-wk intervals from March 1985 to February 1989. Significant dark NH4 + uptake occurred and varied both spatially and seasonally, accounting for as much as 95% of light uptake with the median being 33%. Apparent NH4 + uptake ranged from 0.001 μmol N 1?1 h?1 to 4.2 μmol N 1?1 h?1, with highest rates occurring during late summer-fall in the oligohaline estuary. Apparent NH4 + uptake was significantly related to NH4 + concentration (p<0.01); however, the regression explained <3% of the variation. Daily-integrated NH4 + uptake ranged from 0.1 mmol N m?2 d?1 to 133 mmol N m?2 d?1 and followed the trend of apparent uptake. Annual NH4 + uptake of the estuary was significantly lower in 1988 than for any other year. Dark uptake of NO3 ? was only 14% of maximum light uptake. Apparent NO3 ? uptake rates ranged from 0.001 μmol N 1?1 h?1 to 1.84 μmol N 1?1 h?1 with highest rates occurring in the oligohaline estuary. Apparent NO3 ? uptake was significantly related to NO3 ? concentration (p<0.01); however, the regression explained <5% of the variation. In general, NO3 ? uptake was only 20% of total dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) uptake. Daily-integrated NO3 ? uptake ranged from 0.1 mmol N m?2 d?1 to 53 mmol N m?2 d?1 and followed similar patterns of apparent uptake. Annual NH4 + uptake was 11.39 mol N m?2 yr?1, 10.28 mol N m?2 Yr?1, 10.93 mol N m?2 yr?1, and 7.38 mol N m?2 yr?1, and 1.84 mol N m?2 yr?1, with the 4-yr mean being 10.0. Annual NO3 ? uptake was 3.12 mol N m?2 yr?1, 3.40 mol N m?2 yr?1, 1.96 mol N m?2 yr?1, and 1.84 mol N m?2 yr?1, with the 4-yr mean being 2.6. The total annual DIN uptake was more than twice published estimates of phytoplankton DIN demand, indicating that there is an important heterotrophic component of DIN uptake occurring in the water column. The extrapolation of nitrogen demand from primary productivity results in serious underestimates of estuarine nitrogen demand for the Neuse River estuary and may be true for other estuaries as well.  相似文献

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) was quantified at select sites in San Francisco Bay (SFB) from radium (223Ra and 224Ra) and radon (222Rn) activities measured in groundwater and surface water using simple mass balance box models. Based on these models, discharge rates in South and Central Bays were 0.3?C7.4?m3?day?1?m?1. Although SGD fluxes at the two regions (Central and South Bays) of SFB were of the same order of magnitude, the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) species associated with SGD were different. In the South Bay, ammonium (NH 4 + ) concentrations in groundwater were three-fold higher than in open bay waters, and NH 4 + was the primary DIN form discharged by SGD. At the Central Bay site, the primary DIN form in groundwater and associated discharge was nitrate (NO 3 ? ). The stable isotope signatures (??15NNO3 and ??18ONO3) of NO 3 ? in the South Bay groundwater and surface waters were both consistent with NO 3 ? derived from NH 4 + that was isotopically enriched in 15N by NH 4 + volatilization. Based on the calculated SGD fluxes and groundwater nutrient concentrations, nutrient fluxes associated with SGD can account for up to 16?% of DIN and 22?% of DIP in South and Central Bays. The form of DIN contributed to surface waters from SGD may impact the ratio of NO 3 ? to NH 4 + available to phytoplankton with implications to bay productivity, phytoplankton species distribution, and nutrient uptake rates. This assessment of nutrient delivery via groundwater discharge in SFB may provide vital information for future bay ecological wellbeing and sensitivity to future environmental stressors.  相似文献

The coastal waters of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States receive inputs of atmospheric pollutants as a consequence of being located downwind from major industrial and urban emissions. These inputs are potentially the largest received by any marine area of the country. Of current interest is the atmospheric input of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN = NO3 ?+NH4 +). We have conducted a first-order examination of the magnitude of atmospheric DIN deposition relative to other large-scale inputs for Delaware Bay, a partially urbanized mid-Atlantic coastal plain estuary. The following loading terms: direct atmospheric deposition, indirect atmospheric loading, urban point discharges, fluvial input, benthic flux, and salt marsh export were evaluated. On an annual basis, municipal-industrial effluents provide a dominant source (ca. 40%) of the DIN inputs to the estuary. Total (wet plus dry) atmospheric deposition accounts for about 15% of the total annual DIN inputs. However, during summer, which is characterized by low river-flow and seasonally maximum atmospheric loading, this figure increases to around 25%. Although atmospheric input can satisfy only a fraction of the primary production demands, this summer flux may represent an ecologically important source of external DIN, half of which is directly deposited to surface photic zones where it is readily available for biological uptake.  相似文献

Eh, pH, salinity, total alkalinity, dissolved O2, NO2 , PO4 –3, SiO2 and NH4 + of waters from a mangrove forest, an estuary and a creek connecting the mangrove forest and the estuary have been measured. Further, the chemistry of interstitial waters of surficial and core sediments from the mangrove forest have been analyzed for the above parameters, except dissolved oxygen. To understand the flux of nutrients from the mangrove forest to the adjoining estuary, creek waters were monitored during tidal phases. PO4 –3, SiO2 and NH4 + were found to be at elevated levels in mangrove waters whereas NO2 shows no variation compared to the estuary. Dissolved O2 is low in mangrove waters. PO4 –3, NH4 + and SiO2 are several times higher in interstitial waters than in overlying waters. Several fold enrichment of PO4 –3, NH4 + and, to some extent, SiO2 were measured in creek waters during ebbing relative to flooding, indicating that mangroves act as a perennial source for the above nutrients.
