We present two images of intermediate and low axial inclination G dwarfs (AP 149 and AP 193) in the young open cluster α Persei, and compare these with previous images of intermediate and high axial inclination objects in this cluster. All stars show starspots at high latitudes, with one star exhibiting a strong polar spot. Although low-latitude features are found on all stars to some degree, the detection of spots on AP 193 is marginal. The apparent difference in starspot morphology from one object to the next is probably the result of a stellar magnetic cycle, although the exact effect on the starspot distribution throughout a cycle is unknown.
Polar spots are found in many Doppler images of rapidly rotating cool stars. In the past, their existence has been called into question, and it has been suggested that they could be the manifestations of NLTE (e.g. chromospheric filling in of line profiles) effects rather than real photospheric features. We assume the polar spots to be real photospheric features, and conclude that the flat-bottomed nature of the profile shape can be attributed to photospheric polar spots. The degree of truncation of the profile depends not only on spot size and strength, but also on the effective foreshortening of the polar region, a function of axial inclination.
H α is in emission on AP 149 which shows a double peak at most phases. The time-series of the profile shows an s-wave pattern as the position of these peaks changes throughout the rotation cycle. We attribute this to coronal clouds located above the stellar surface in synchronous orbit. A maximum-entropy tomogram is derived revealing four distinct emission regions located near and above the corotation radius.  相似文献

We present a new inversion code that reconstructs the stellar surface spot configuration from the light curve of a rotating star. Our code employs a method that uses the truncated least‐squares estimation of the inverse problem's objects principal components. We use spot filling factors as the unknown objects. Various test cases that represent a rapidly‐rotating K subgiant are used for the forward problem. Tests are then performed to recover the artificial input map and include data errors and input‐parameter errors. We demonstrate the robustness of the solution to false input parameters like photospheric temperature, spot temperature, gravity, inclination, unspotted brightness and different spot distributions and we also demonstrate the insensitivity of the solution to spot latitude. Tests with spots peppered over the entire stellar surface or with phase gaps do not produce fake active longitudes. The code is then applied to ten years of V and I ‐band light curve data of the spotted sub‐giant HD291095. A total of 22 light curves is presented. We find that for most of the time its spots were grouped around two active longitudes separated on average by 180°. Switches of the dominant active region between these two longitudes likely occurred about every 3.15±0.23 years while the amplitude modulation of the brightness occurred with a possible period of 3.0±0.15 years. For the first time, we found evidence that the times of the activity flips coincide with times of minimum light as well as minimum photometric amplitude, i.e. maximum spottedness. From a comparison with simultaneous Doppler images we conclude that the activity flips likely take place near the rotational pole of the star. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We investigate the pattern of anomalies in the light curves of caustic-crossing binary microlensing events induced by spot(s) on the lensed source star. To this end, we perform simulations of events with various models of spots. From these simulations we find that the spot-induced anomalies take various forms depending on the physical state of spots, which is characterized by the surface brightness contrast, the size, the number, the umbra/penumbra structure, the shape and the orientation with respect to the sweeping caustic. We also examine the feasibility of distinguishing the two possibly degenerate types of anomalies caused by a spot and a transiting planet and find that in many cases the degeneracy can be separated from the characteristic multiple deviation feature in the spot-induced anomaly pattern caused by the multiplicity of spots.  相似文献

We present surface spot maps of the K2V primary star in the pre-cataclysmic variable binary system, V471 Tau. The spot maps show the presence of large high-latitude spots located at the sub-white dwarf longitude region. By tracking the relative movement of spot groups over the course of four nights (eight rotation cycles), we measure the surface differential rotation rate of the system. Our results reveal that the star is rotating rigidly with a surface shear rate,  dΩ= 1.6 ± 6 mrad d−1  . The single active star AB Dor has a similar spectral type, rotation period and activity level as the K star in V471 Tau, but displays much stronger surface shear  (46 < dΩ < 58 mrad d−1)  . Our results suggest that tidal locking may inhibit differential rotation; this reduced shear, however, does not affect the overall magnetic activity levels in active K dwarfs.  相似文献

We present a newly discovered magnetically active binary system detected by Yunnan-Hong Kong wide field survey, with an orbital period of 0.60286 days. Two color photometry for the system was performed using the 1 m Cassegrain telescope of Yunnan Observatories with its CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) camera. In the observed light curves, there are clearly different light maxima existed in the out-of-eclipse regions. We made spectroscopic observations for the binary system using the 2.4 m telescope and YFOSC (Yunnan Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera) of Lijiang station of Yunnan Observatories, China. The radial velocity curve was derived for primary star of the binary system. The primary star exhibited strong chromospheric activity, which confirms that the distortion of the light curves results from the starspot activity on the primary star. Through analyzing the light curves and RV (Radial Velocity) curve mentioned above by means of the W-D (Wilson-Devinney) code, orbital parameters and starspot configuration of the binary system are obtained. Finally, we have discussed the properties of the binary system, and given the prospects on the future work.  相似文献

The photometric light modulation of ζ Andromedae originates from the distorted geometry of the primary, and additionally, from spots of which parameters (temperature, size, location) are variable in time. We present spot modelling results for six two-colour light curves which show that spots preferably appear on the stellar surface towards the companion star and opposite to it, where the distortion also causes dimming. Therefore, simple fitting of the measured data for the ellipticity effect does not yield correct result. Instead, ellipticity calculated from exact stellar parameters should be removed from the data to get reliable spotted light curves.  相似文献

We have used maximum entropy eclipse-mapping to recover images of the visual surface brightness distribution of the primary component of the RS CVn eclipsing binary SV Cam, using high-precision photometry data obtained during three primary eclipses with Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ). These were augmented by contemporaneous ground-based photometry secured around the rest of the orbit. The goal of these observations was to determine the filling factor and size distribution of star-spots too small to be resolved by Doppler imaging. The information content of the final image and the fit to the data were optimized with respect to various system parameters using the χ2 landscape method, using an eclipse-mapping code that solves for large-scale spot coverage. It is only with the unprecedented photometric precision of the HST data (0.000 15 mag) that it is possible to see strong discontinuities at the four contact points in the residuals of the fit to the light curve. These features can only be removed from the residual light curve by the reduction of the photospheric temperature, to synthesize high unresolvable spot coverage, and the inclusion of a polar spot. We show that this spottedness of the stellar surface can have a significant impact on the determination of the stellar binary parameters and the fit to the light curve by reducing the secondary radius from  0.794 ± 0.009  to  0.727 ± 0.009 R  . This new technique can also be applied to other binary systems with high-precision spectrophotometric observations.  相似文献

We report contemporaneous multi-wavelength interferometric imaging of the red supergiant star Betelgeuse ( α Orionis), using the Cambridge Optical Aperture Synthesis Telescope (COAST) and the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), at wavelengths of 700, 905 and 1290 nm. We find a strong variation in the apparent symmetry of the stellar brightness distribution as a function of wavelength. At 700 nm the star is highly asymmetric, and can be modelled as the superposition of three bright spots on a strongly limb-darkened disc. However, at 905 nm only a single low-contrast feature is visible and at 1290 nm the star presents a featureless symmetric disc. The change in spot contrast with wavelength is consistent with a model in which the bright spots represent unobscured areas of elevated temperature, owing perhaps to convection, on a stellar disc that itself has a different appearance, i.e. geometrical extent and limb-darkening profile, at different wavelengths. The featureless centre-to-limb brightness profile seen at 1290 nm is consistent with this model and suggests that future interferometric monitoring of the star to quantify the size changes associated with radial velocity variations should be performed at similar wavelengths in the near-infrared.  相似文献

We present a Roche tomography reconstruction of the secondary star in the cataclysmic variable AE Aqr. The tomogram reveals several surface inhomogeneities that are due to the presence of large, cool star-spots. In addition to a number of lower latitude spots, the maps also show the presence of a large, high-latitude spot similar to that seen in Doppler images of rapidly rotating isolated stars, and a relative paucity of spots at a latitude of 40°. In total, we estimate that some 18 per cent of the Northern hemisphere of AE Aqr is spotted.
We have also applied the entropy landscape technique to determine accurate parameters for the binary system. We obtain optimal masses   M 1= 0.74 M, M 2= 0.50 M  , a systemic velocity  γ=−63 km s−1  and an orbital inclination   i = 66°  .
Given that this is the first study to successfully image star-spots on the secondary star in a cataclysmic variable, we discuss the role that further studies of this kind may play in our understanding of these binaries.  相似文献

We suggest a model based on the representation of the stellar magnetic field as a superposition of a finite number of poloidal and toroidal free decay modes to describe the dynamo action in fully convective stars. For the adopted law of stellar differential rotation, we determined the dynamo number in exceeding which the generation of a cyclically varying magnetic field is possible in stars without a radiative core and derived an expression for the period of the cycle. The dynamo cycles in fully convective stars and in stars with thin convective envelopes are shown to differ qualitatively: first, the distributions of spots in latitude during the cycle are different for these two types of stars and, second, the model predicts a great weakening of the spot formation in fully convective stars at certain phases of the cycle. To compare the theory with observations, we have analyzed the historical light curve for the weak-line T Tauri star V410 Tau and found that its long-term activity is not a well-defined cycle with a definite period—its activity is more likely quasi-cyclic with a characteristic time of ~4 yr and with a chaotic component superimposed. we have also concluded that a redistribution of spots in longitude is responsible for the secular brightness variations in the star. This does not allow the results of photometric observations to be directly compared with predictions of ourmodel, in which, for simplicity, we assumed a symmetry in longitude and investigated the temporal evolution of the spot distribution in latitude. Therefore, we discuss the questions of what and how observations can be compared with predictions of the dynamo theory.  相似文献

We present the analysis of 20 years of time‐series BV photometry of the SB1 RS CVn binary HD 89546. The system's yearly mean V brightness, the BV color index, the photometric period, and the light curve amplitude all show clear cyclic variability with an ≈9‐year time scale. We also find some evidence for brightness variability on a time scale longer than the 20‐year time span of our observations, perhaps indicating a longer cycle analogous to the solar Gleissberg cycle. We estimate the unspotted V magnitude of HD 89546 to be 7.m154, which is ≈0.m2 brighter than the observed maximum brightness. Spot modelling of the system shows that spot temperature variations affect the observed BV color as well as the V brightness. Two active longitudes are observed, centered around 180° and 360° longitude on the G9 III primary, each covering a longitude range of 120°. Furthermore, two inactive longitude zones are seen spanning only 60° between the two active longitudes. The longitudinal distribution of the spots exhibits no strong cyclic variability but does show rapid jumps of 120° that look like the flip‐flop phenomenon. We estimate the differential rotation coefficient of the star as k = 0.086 by considering the range of observed photometric period variations and assumed latitudinal spot variations over 45° (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Investigating more than 270 nightly mean magnitudes of the long-period RS CVn binary HK Lac, we can draw some conclusions about the nature of its complicated light variations. The mean brightness, the apparent photometric period, and the shape of the light curve all show strong variations. Analysis with a starspot model, assuming two large spots and a general uniform spottedness, indicates two comparably large spots which appear to have maintained their separate identities for the last 15 yr and drifted in longitude separation from each other smoothly by only about 45°. The phase of the two spots indicates both are rotating very nearly synchronously with the orbital motion, one slightly (0.025%) faster and the other slightly (0.080%) slower. the latitudes of the two spots, one farther above the equator and one closer to the equator, are consistent with solar-type differential rotation and yield an estimate of 25±12° for the co-rotating latitude. A correlation between mean spot latitude and instantaneous photometric period yields another estimate of 31±2°, in agreement with the first.  相似文献

We present spot models for nine years of continuous VIc photometry of UZ Lib from 1993–2001. The relatively stable double‐humped light curve shape suggests extreme phase coherence. From the spot‐modelling analysis, we found that the major spots or spot groups are always located on the hemisphere facing the secondary star and exactly in the opposite hemisphere anti‐facing the secondary. Several single‐humped light curves and our suggested binary scenario rule out a pure ellipsoidal variability as the cause of the double‐humped light curve shape. We try to explain this preferred spot pattern with a magnetic‐field structure that connects the two components, as suggested earlier for RS CVn stars in general. A possible 4.8 years spot cycle is found from the long‐term brightness variations but needs confirmation. We rediscuss the basic astrophysical data of UZ Lib. The Hipparcos parallax is likely wrong, a possible reason could be that UZ Lib is e.g., a triple system.  相似文献

This paper presents new CCD BVRI light curves of the newly discovered RS CVn eclipsing binary star DV Psc. From the asymmetric light curves outside the eclipse, we find there are two depressions in the phase ranges 0.3–0.45 and 0.6–0.9, respectively. By analyzing the light curves using the Wilson–Devinney program, the four photometric solutions of the system are obtained and the starspot parameters are also derived. It turns out that the case of two spots being on the primary is most successful in reproducing the light curve distortion of DV Psc. Moreover, analysis the longitudes of spots suggests that there are two active longitude belts (one is about 90°, the other is about 270°). At the same time, on 22 November 2008, the first flare-like event was detected on DV Psc at phase 0.35 whose duration was about 13.5 min. These findings reveal that DV Psc has a high degree of magnetic activity.  相似文献

We present new models for the formation of disc galaxies that improve upon previous models by following the detailed accretion and cooling of the baryonic mass, and by using realistic distributions of specific angular momentum. Under the assumption of detailed angular momentum conservation, the discs that form have density distributions that are more centrally concentrated than an exponential. We examine the influence of star formation, bulge formation, and feedback on the outcome of the surface brightness distributions of the stars. Low angular momentum haloes yield disc galaxies with a significant bulge component and with a stellar disc that is close to exponential, in good agreement with observations. High angular momentum haloes, on the other hand, produce stellar discs that are much more concentrated than an exponential, in clear conflict with observations. At large radii, the models reveal distinct truncation radii in both the stars and the cold gas. The stellar truncation radii result from our implementation of star formation threshold densities, and are in excellent agreement with observations. The truncation radii in the density distribution of the cold gas reflect the maximum specific angular momentum of the gas that has cooled. We find that these truncation radii occur at H  i surface densities of roughly 1 M pc−2, in conflict with observations. We examine various modifications to our models, including feedback, viscosity, and dark matter haloes with constant-density cores, but show that the models consistently fail to produce bulge less discs with exponential surface brightness profiles. This signals a new problem for the standard model of disc formation: if the baryonic component of the protogalaxies out of which disc galaxies form has the same angular momentum distribution as the dark matter, discs are too compact.  相似文献

The observations of the peculiar eclipsing binary RT Lac were continued during the observing seasons of 1982 and 1983. The salient properties of the light curves were presented. The shallowest primary eclipse was observed in 1983. When the light curves, obtained in six years sucessively, are interpreted together it is seen that the variations of the brightness at mid-primary and second maximum are too similar to each other. The colour variations at mid-primary also follow those variations in the brightness. These circumstances indicate that the starspot hypothesis is insufficient alone to explain all the phenomena observed. The earlier spectral type G9 companion may be intrinsically variable and the unusual distortion on the light curves following the secondary eclipse may arise from the gas-stream from larger K star to the G9 star.  相似文献

We report on the numerical discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) associated with accretion through a non-axisymmetric magnetic boundary layer in the unstable regime, when two ordered equatorial streams form and rotate synchronously at approximately the angular velocity of the inner disc. The streams hit the star's surface producing hotspots. Rotation of the spots leads to high-frequency QPOs. We performed a number of simulation runs for different magnetospheric sizes from small to tiny, and observed a definite correlation between the inner disc radius and the QPO frequency: the frequency is higher when the magnetosphere is smaller. In the stable regime, a small magnetosphere forms and accretion through the usual funnel streams is observed, and the frequency of the star is expected to dominate the light curve. We performed exploratory investigations of the case in which the magnetosphere becomes negligibly small and the disc interacts with the star through an equatorial belt. We also performed investigation of somewhat larger magnetospheres where one or two ordered tongues may dominate over other chaotic tongues. In application to millisecond pulsars, we obtain QPO frequencies in the range of 350–990 Hz for one spot. The frequency associated with rotation of one spot may dominate if spots are not identical or antipodal. If the spots are similar and antipodal, then the frequencies are twice as high. We show that variation of the accretion rate leads to drift of the QPO peak.  相似文献
