Optically very faint  ( R > 25.5)  sources detected by the Spitzer Space Telescope at 24 μm represent a very interesting population at redshift   z ∼ (1.5–3)  . They exhibit strong clustering properties, implying that they are hosted by very massive haloes, and their mid-infrared emission could be powered by either dust-enshrouded star formation and/or by an obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). We report observations carried out with the Max Planck Millimetre Bolometer (MAMBO) array at the IRAM 30-m antenna on Pico Veleta of a candidate protocluster with five optically obscured sources selected from the 24-μm Spitzer sample of the First-Look Survey. Interestingly, these sources appear to lie on a high-density filament aligned with the two radio jets of an AGN. Four out of five of the observed sources were detected. We combine these measurements with optical, infrared and radio observations to probe the nature of the candidate protocluster members. Our preliminary conclusions can be summarized as follows: the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of all sources include both AGN and starburst contributions; the AGN contribution to the bolometric luminosities ranges between 14 and 26 per cent of the total. Such a contribution is enough for the AGN to dominate the emission at 5.8, 8 and 24 μm, while the stellar component, inferred from SED fitting, prevails at 1.25 mm and at  λ < 4.5 μ  m. The present analysis suggests a coherent interplay at high z between extended radio activity and the development of filamentary large-scale structures.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the X-ray point source populations in 182 Chandra images of galaxy clusters at   z > 0.1  with exposure time >10 ks, as well as 44 non-cluster fields. The analysis of the number and flux of these sources, using a detailed pipeline to predict the distribution of non-cluster sources in each field, reveals an excess of X-ray point sources associated with the galaxy clusters. A sample of 148 galaxy clusters at  0.1 < z < 0.9  , with no other nearby clusters, shows an excess of 230 cluster sources in total, an average of ∼1.5 sources per cluster. The lack of optical data for these clusters limits the physical interpretation of this result, as we cannot calculate the fraction of cluster galaxies hosting X-ray sources. However, the fluxes of the excess sources indicate that over half of them are very likely to be active galactic nuclei (AGN), and the radial distribution shows that they are quite evenly distributed over the central 1 Mpc of the cluster, with almost no sources found beyond this radius. We also use this pipeline to successfully reproduce the results of previous studies, particularly the higher density of sources in the central 0.5 Mpc of a few cluster fields, but show that these conclusions are not generally valid for this larger sample of clusters. We conclude that some of these differences may be due to the sample properties, such as the size and redshift of the clusters studied, or a lack of publications for cluster fields with no excess sources. This paper also presents the basic X-ray properties of the galaxy clusters, and in subsequent papers in this series the dependence of the AGN population on these cluster properties will be evaluated.
In addition the properties of over 9500 X-ray point sources in the fields of galaxy clusters are tabulated in a separate catalogue available online or at http://www.sc.eso.org~rgilmour .  相似文献

The variability of γ-ray sources listed in the third EGRET catalog is studied using three variability indices. These indices are found to be statistically equivalent if the observed data are sufficiently accurate. Using the three indices,30 EGRET point sources which are positionally coincident with pulsars and 40 persistent unidentified sources at low latitudes are analyzed for their variability status. It is found that 14 of the 30 point sources may have genuine or plausible associations with pulsars, and 16 of the 40 persistent unidentified sources are possible pulsar candidates.  相似文献

We present the results of a search for UV and optical counterparts of the SSS population in M 31. We find that out of the 56 sources we included in our search, 16 are associated with regions of ongoing or recent star formation. We discuss two particularly interesting sources that are identified optically as early type stars, one of which displayed long term X‐ray evolution similar to that observed in classical novae. We discuss the physical origin of supersoft X‐rays in these and the other SSS in young regions, and their possible link to the so‐called “prompt” component of the Type Ia supernova population (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An analytical model is presented for the evolution of powerful double radio sources on small physical scales less than about 100 kpc when radiative losses can be neglected. The self-similar model of Kaiser & Alexander is extended to allow for expansion in an atmosphere with a King profile. Distribution functions for the number of sources in a logarithmic interval of linear size within a flux-limited sample are calculated and compared with observation. The observational data can be reproduced if it is assumed that there exists a population of sources that evolve and survive to sizes greater than the core radius, together with a population that suffer disruption of their jets before escaping the core radius. The latter population, while they may be regarded as frustrated sources, are not old sources, but just short-lived.  相似文献

We present the optical-to-submillimetre spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 33 radio and mid-infrared (mid-IR) identified submillimetre galaxies discovered via the SHADES 850-μm SCUBA imaging in the Subaru- XMM Deep Field (SXDF). Optical data for the sources come from the SXDF and mid- and far-IR fluxes from SWIRE. We obtain photometric redshift estimates for our sources using optical and IRAC 3.6- and 4.5-μm fluxes. We then fit SED templates to the longer wavelength data to determine the nature of the far-IR emission that dominates the bolometric luminosity of these sources. The IR template fits are also used to resolve ambiguous identifications and cases of redshift aliasing. The redshift distribution obtained broadly matches previous results for submillimetre sources and on the SHADES SXDF field. Our template fitting finds that active galactic nuclei, while present in about 10 per cent of our sources, do not contribute significantly to their bolometric luminosity. Dust heating by starbursts, with either Arp220 or M82 type SEDs, appears to be responsible for the luminosity in most sources (23/33 are fitted by Arp220 templates, 2/33 by the warmer M82 templates). 8/33 sources, in contrast, are fitted by a cooler cirrus dust template, suggesting that cold dust has a role in some of these highly luminous objects. Three of our sources appear to have multiple identifications or components at the same redshift, but we find no statistical evidence that close associations are common among our SHADES sources. Examination of rest-frame K -band luminosity suggests that 'downsizing' is underway in the submillimetre galaxy population, with lower redshift systems lying in lower mass host galaxies. Of our 33 identifications six are found to be of lower reliability but their exclusion would not significantly alter our conclusions.  相似文献

For this paper, we collected almost all of the type II quasars so far discovered. Among them, 485 sources have photometric data at JHK bands, mainly from Two-Micron All-Sky Survey observations, 65 sources have IRAS photometric data in at least one of the three IRAS bands at 25, 60 and 100 μm and 15 sources have IRAS photometric data in all three IRAS bands. We find that in nearly half of all type II quasars, both the near- and far-infrared radiations are dominated by starlight or thermal reprocessing of starlight by dust in the underlying galaxy. The infrared radiation of the other group (slightly over half) is dominated by a non-thermal radiation in the near-infrared, and mostly in the far-infrared also (although there is a mixture particularly for the longer wavelengths). It is proposed that for the later group, hidden broad lines may exist in the infrared. On the basis of our and previous results, we also discuss the possibility that there are two distinct classes of type II quasars: 'true' type II quasars without a broad-line region and heavily obscured type I quasars, in full analogy with the case for type II Seyfert galaxies. No relationships can be found for either the near-infrared or the far-infrared colours and the redshift. Correlations between absolute magnitude in the near- and far-infrared with redshift are found, but could be due to a flux limit (Malmquist bias).  相似文献

We have used recent X-ray and optical data in order to impose some constraints on the cosmology and cluster scaling relations.
Generically, two kinds of hypotheses define our model. First, we consider that the cluster population is well described by the standard Press–Schechter (PS) formalism, and secondly, these clusters are assumed to follow scaling relations with mass: temperature–mass ( T – M ) and X-ray luminosity–mass ( L x– M ) .
In contrast with many other authors we do not assume specific scaling relations to model cluster properties such as the usual T – M virial relation or an observational relation or an observational determination of the L x– T relation. Instead we consider general unconstrained parameter scaling relations.
With the previous model (PS plus scalings) we fit our free parameters to several X-ray and optical data sets with the advantage over preceding works that we consider all the data sets at the same time. This prevents us from being inconsistent with some of the available observations. Among other interesting conclusions, we find that only low-density universes are compatible with all the data considered and that the degeneracy between Ωm and σ 8 is broken. Also we obtain interesting limits on the parameters characterizing the scaling relations.  相似文献

Difference imaging is a technique for obtaining precise relative photometry of variable sources in crowded stellar fields and, as such, constitutes a crucial part of the data reduction pipeline in surveys for microlensing events or transiting extrasolar planets. The Optimal Image Subtraction (OIS) algorithm of Alard & Lupton (1998) permits the accurate differencing of images by determining convolution kernels which, when applied to reference images with particularly good seeing and signal‐to‐noise (S/N), provide excellent matches to the point‐spread functions (PSF) in other images of the time series to be analysed. The convolution kernels are built as linear combinations of a set of basis functions, conventionally bivariate Gaussians modulated by polynomials. The kernel parameters, mainly the widths and maximal degrees of the basis function model, must be supplied by the user. Ideally, the parameters should be matched to the PSF, pixel‐sampling, and S/N of the data set or individual images to be analysed. We have studied the dependence of the reduction outcome as a function of the kernel parameters using our new implementation of OIS within the IDL‐based TRIPP package. From the analysis of noise‐free PSF simulations of both single objects and crowded fields, as well as the test images in the ISIS OIS software package, we derive qualitative and quantitative relations between the kernel parameters and the success of the subtraction as a function of the PSF widths and sampling in reference and data images and compare the results to those of other implementations found in the literature. On the basis of these simulations, we provide recommended parameters for data sets with different S/N and sampling. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

A periodicity search of gamma-ray data is usually difficult because of the small number of detected photons. A periodicity in the timing signal at other energy bands from the counterpart to the gamma-ray source may help to establish the periodicity in the gamma-ray emission and strengthen the identification of the source in different energy bands. However, it may still be difficult to find the period directly from X-ray data because of limited exposure. We have developed a procedure, by cross-checking two X-ray data sets, to find candidate periods for X-ray sources that are possible counterparts to gamma-ray pulsar candidates. Here, we report on the results of this method obtained with all the currently available X-ray data of eight X-ray sources. Some attractive periodicity features were found. These candidate periods can serve as the target periods for a future search when new data become available, so that a blind search with a huge number of trials can be avoided.  相似文献

Understanding diffuse Galactic radio emission is interesting both in its own right and for minimizing foreground contamination of cosmological measurements. cosmic microwave background experiments have focused on frequencies ≳10 GHz, whereas 21-cm tomography of the high-redshift universe will mainly focus on ≲0.2 GHz, for which less is currently known about Galactic emission. Motivated by this, we present a global sky model derived from all publicly available total power large-area radio surveys, digitized with optical character recognition when necessary and compiled into a uniform format, as well as the new Villa Elisa data extending the 1.42-GHz map to the entire sky. We quantify statistical and systematic uncertainties in these surveys by comparing them with various global multifrequency model fits. We find that a principal component based model with only three components can fit the 11 most accurate data sets (at 10, 22, 45 and 408 MHz and 1.42, 2.326, 23, 33, 41, 61, 94 GHz) to an accuracy around 1–10 per cent depending on frequency and sky region. Both our data compilation and our software returning a predicted all-sky map at any frequency from 10 MHz to 100 GHz are publicly available at http://space.mit.edu/home/angelica/gsm .  相似文献

Wide-field mapping of Serpens in submillimetre continuum emission and CO J =2–1 line emission is here complemented by optical imaging in [S  ii ] λλ 6716, 6731 line emission. Analysis of the 450- and 850-μm continuum data shows at least 10 separate sources, along with fainter diffuse background emission and filaments extending to the south and east of the core. These filaments describe 'cavity-like' structures that may have been shaped by the numerous outflows in the region. The dust opacity index, β , derived for the identifiable compact sources is of the order of 1.0±0.2, with dust temperatures in excess of 20 K. This value of β is somewhat lower than for typical class I YSOs; we suggest that the Serpens sources may be 'warm', late class 0 or early class I objects.
With the combined CO and optical data we also examine, on large scales, the outflows driven by the embedded sources in Serpens. In addition to a number of new Herbig–Haro flows (here denoted HH 455–460), a number of high-velocity CO lobes are observed; these extend radially outwards from the cluster of submillimetre sources in the core. A close association between the optical and molecular flows is also identified. The data suggest that many of the submillimetre sources power outflows. Collectively, the outflows traced in CO support the widely recognized correlation between source bolometric luminosity and outflow power, and imply a dynamical age for the whole protostellar cluster of ∼3×104 yr. Notably, this is roughly equal to the proposed duration of the 'class 0' stage in protostellar evolution.  相似文献

The short exposure and high precision photometry of TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) space satellite provide good data for distinguishing variable stars and searching planets. In this paper, a series of methods, such as periodic spectrum and phase folding, are used to analyze 19995 target sources with high-quality variable data in TESS sector 21, and these sources are classified. A total of 4624 variable stars are obtained, including 322 binary stars, 470 pulsating variable stars, and 37 planetary transients. A total of 625 variable sources were cross matched with VSX (The International Variable Star Index). Among them, 131 were eclipsing binary systems and 31 were pulsating variables, whose periods are obtained by periodic spectrum. The other 59 variable stars have flare phenomena, and 8 stars have transiting planets, whose rotation periods are also obtained through the periodic spectrum. The feasibility of the analysis of variable stars by TESS space satellite data is verified. By comparing the period results obtained by TESS space satellite sector 21 with the variable star period provided by VSX variable star table, we found that the periods of most variable stars are consistent with those in this paper, and a few of them need to be corrected. Finally, the verified and corrected variable star tables are provided in this paper.  相似文献

Observation data from radio telescopes is typically stored in three (or higher) dimensional data cubes, the resolution, coverage and size of which continues to grow as ever larger radio telescopes come online. The Square Kilometre Array, tabled to be the largest radio telescope in the world, will generate multi-terabyte data cubes – several orders of magnitude larger than the current norm. Despite this imminent data deluge, scalable approaches to file access in Astronomical visualisation software are rare: most current software packages cannot read astronomical data cubes that do not fit into computer system memory, or else provide access only at a serious performance cost. In addition, there is little support for interactive exploration of 3D data.We describe a scalable, hierarchical approach to 3D visualisation of very large spectral data cubes to enable rapid visualisation of large data files on standard desktop hardware. Our hierarchical approach, embodied in the AstroVis prototype, aims to provide a means of viewing large datasets that do not fit into system memory. The focus is on rapid initial response: our system initially rapidly presents a reduced, coarse-grained 3D view of the data cube selected, which is gradually refined. The user may select sub-regions of the cube to be explored in more detail, or extracted for use in applications that do not support large files. We thus shift the focus from data analysis informed by narrow slices of detailed information, to analysis informed by overview information, with details on demand. Our hierarchical solution to the rendering of large data cubes reduces the overall time to complete file reading, provides user feedback during file processing and is memory efficient. This solution does not require high performance computing hardware and can be implemented on any platform supporting the OpenGL rendering library.  相似文献

Gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) radio sources are thought to be young objects which later evolve into Fanaro–Riley type I (FR I) and FR II radio galaxies. We have used the Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey catalogue to select a uniform sample of GPS sources with spectral peaks above 5 GHz, which should represent the youngest members of this class. In this paper, we present e-VLBI observations of 10 such objects which are associated with nearby  ( z < 0.15)  galaxies and so represent a new population of local, low-power GPS sources. Our e-VLBI observations were carried out at 4.8 GHz with the Australia Telescope Long Baseline Array (LBA) using a real-time software correlator. All 10 sources were detected, and were unresolved on scales of ∼100 mas, implying that they are typically less than 100 pc in linear size.  相似文献

We present multi-epoch observations of Arp 220 with the VLBA and focus on the continuum emission from the luminous radio supernovae (RSNe) whose 1.6-GHz light curves are shown. The supernovae seem to be generally stable or only slowly decaying in flux with time, a result which deviates from the model of Type IIn RSNe. Hints of new eruptions confirm that they are indeed new sources and not supernova remnants, which could be several hundred years old. The slow decay of the sources for which monitoring data were available forces us to reconsider the starburst model for Arp 220 and adopt a more modest value of 0.7 yr−1 for the supernova rate based on these new eruptions. The starburst efficiency should also be modified accordingly which gives rise to the issue of an active nucleus once more. The question is raised whether it is the starburst which creates this active nucleus, something which could affect the evolution of starburst galaxies as a group.  相似文献

We present evolutionary tracks of binary systems with high-mass companion stars and stellar-through-intermediate mass black holes (BHs). Using Eggleton's stellar evolution code, we compute the luminosity produced by accretion from the donor during its entire evolution. We compute also the evolution of the optical luminosity and colours of the binary system taking the disc contribution and irradiation effects into account. The calculations presented here can be used to constrain the properties of the donor stars in ultraluminous X-ray sources by comparing their position on the Hertzsprung–Russell or colour–magnitude diagrams with the evolutionary tracks of massive BH binaries. This approach may actually provide interesting clues also on the properties of the binary system itself, including the BH mass. We found that, on the basis of their position on the colour–magnitude diagram, some of the candidate counterparts considered can be ruled out and more stringent constraints can be applied to the donor masses.  相似文献

A wealth of information on the properties of jets in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) can be derived from total flux density observations at high radio frequencies. This includes, for example, the Doppler factor, the Lorentz factor, and the viewing angle of the jet. We have earlier calculated these parameters for a sample of ~80 sources of different AGN types using almost 20 years of 22 and 37 GHz data from Metsähovi Radio Observatory. We have now gathered data for an additional ten years, and studied the long term characteristic variability time scales of a large sample of AGNs using the first order structure function, the discrete autocorrelation function and the Lomb-Scargle periodogram. Some of the results will be presented in this paper. We also stress the importance of long term observations of AGNs, the main reason for this being misinterpretations of source properties due to insufficient time coverage. Only a few observing epochs will too easily lead to incorrect conclusions about variability, continuum spectra, and the general detectability of the source, not to mention the exclusion of interesting objects from further studies. This is particularly important when considering, for example, the Planck satellite for which the quality of the main mission product, the accurate cosmic microwave background anisotropy maps, depends heavily on the elimination of foreground sources such as AGNs.  相似文献

Microlensing promises to be a powerful tool for studying distant galaxies and quasars. As the data and models improve, there are systematic effects that need to be explored. Quasar continuum and broad-line regions may respond differently to microlensing due to their different sizes; to understand this effect, we study microlensing of finite sources by a mass function of stars. We find that microlensing is insensitive to the slope of the mass function but does depend on the mass range. For negative-parity images, diluting the stellar population with dark matter increases the magnification dispersion for small sources and decreases it for large sources. This implies that the quasar continuum and broad-line regions may experience very different microlensing in negative-parity lensed images. We confirm earlier conclusions that the surface brightness profile and geometry of the source have little effect on microlensing. Finally, we consider non-circular sources. We show that elliptical sources that are aligned with the direction of shear have larger magnification dispersions than sources with perpendicular alignment, an effect that becomes more prominent as the ellipticity increases. Elongated sources can lead to more rapid variability than circular sources, which raises the prospect of using microlensing to probe source shape.  相似文献
