Discrete rigidly rotating components (modes) of the large-scale solar magnetic field have been investigated. We have used a specially calculated basic set of functions to resolve the observed magnetic field into discrete components. This adaptive set of functions, as well as the expansion coefficients, have been found by processing a series of digitized synoptic maps of the background magnetic field over a 20-year period. As a result, dependences have been obtained which describe the spatial structure and the temporal evolution of the 27-day and 28-day rigidly rotating modes of the Sun's magnetic field. The spatial structure of the modes has been compared with simulations based on the known flux-transport equation. In the simulations, the rigidly rotating modes were regarded as stationary states of the magnetic field whose rigid rotation and stability were maintained by a balance between the emergence of magnetic flux from stationary sources located at low latitudes and the horizontal transport of flux by turbulent diffusion and poleward directed meridional flow. Under these assumptions, the structure of the modes is determined solely by the horizontal velocity field of the plasma, except for the low-latitude zone where sources of magnetic flux concentrate. We have found a detailed agreement between the simulations and the results of the data analysis, provided that the amplitude of the meridional flow velocity and the diffusion constant are equal to 9.5 m s–1 and 600 km2 s–1, respectively. The analysis of the expansion coefficients has shown that the rigidly rotating modes undergo rapid step-like variations which occur quasi-periodically with a period of about two years. These variations are caused by separate surges of magnetic flux in the photosphere, so that each new surge gives rise to a rapid replacement of old large-scale magnetic structures by newly arisen ones.  相似文献

We study the persistence of warps in galactic discs in the presence of massive haloes. A disc is approximated by a set of massive rings, while a halo is represented by a conventional n -body simulation. We confirm the conclusion of Nelson &38; Tremaine that a halo responds strongly to an embedded precessing disc. This response invalidates the approximations made in the derivation of classical 'modified tilt' modes. We show that the response of the halo causes the line of nodes of a disc that starts from a modified tilt mode to wind up within a few dynamical times. We explain this finding in terms of the probable spectrum of true normal modes of a combined disc–halo system. The key physical point is that in each radial range the halo rapidly aligns with the disc, so calculations based on the assumption that, in the presence of a warped disc, the halo retains a regular spheroidal structure are based on a fatally flawed assumption.  相似文献

The outer layers of Sun-like stars are regions of rapid spatial variation which modulate the p-mode frequencies by partially reflecting the constituent acoustic waves. With the accuracy that has been achieved by current solar observations, and that is expected from imminent stellar observations, this modulation can be observed from the spectra of the low-degree modes. We present a new and simple theoretical calculation to determine the leading terms in an asymptotic expansion of the outer phase of these modes, which is determined by the structure of the surface layers of the star. Our procedure is to compare the stellar envelope with a plane-parallel polytropic envelope, which we regard as a smooth reference background state. Then we can isolate a seismic signature of the acoustic phase and relate it to the stratification of the outer layers of the convection zone. One can thereby constrain theories of convection that are used to construct the convection zones of the Sun and Sun-like stars. The accuracy of the diagnostic is tested in the solar case by comparing the predicted outer phase with an exact numerical calculation.  相似文献

A new scheme has been devised to calculate discrete unstable global shearing spiral modes of gaseous disk models of galaxies. The scheme makes use of the Legendre expansion of eigen functions and the problem of stability analysis is reduced to an eigenvalue problem of an infinite matrix. The spiral patterns of these shearing wave solutions of linearized equations change their form in the course of time due to the differential rotation of the equilibrium disk. These shearing wave solutions are presumed to have intermediate characteristics between so-called density-waves and material arms. Comparison between these shearing modes and the non-shearing normal modes for a series of disk models is presented.  相似文献

This paper is a continuation of the author's work on stellar convection (Vandakurov, 1975a; hereafter referred to as Paper I). The approximate equations for convective perturbations in Paper I are somewhat corrected and generalized to include both nonlinear terms and possible variations in molecular weight. A crude estimate of the nonlinear terms is given by means of an expansion of the solution in powers of the perturbation amplitude. We assume that only the most rapidly growing unstable modes are of significance and that the initial kinetic energy of each independent mode is the same. An expansion in powers of the angular velocity is also performed. (This means that some upper stellar layers with small, but not very small, superadiabaticity are considered.) It is shown that an azimuth-averaged azimuthal force is created by the unstable perturbations. In particular, it is most likely that in the upper part of any stellar convection envelope the rigid rotation is nonequilibrious. A simple formula for the above azimuthal force is derived in the case of a latitudedependent angular velocity and a small viscosity of the medium. If the perturbed characteristic scaleheight is sufficiently small, the azimuthal force created by the most unstable modes is equivalent to a viscous force, but with a negative viscosity coefficient. In the approximation under consideration, the heat flux is spherically symmetric.  相似文献

Power spectra of the 1979 solar differential observations (Bos, 1982) have been analyzed for evidence of intermediate-degreef-modes. A set of 19 intermediate-degreef-mode multiplets has been identified and classified based on more than 300 classified modes of oscillation. The angular degree of the multiplets ranges from 18 to 36. Them=0 eigenfrequency spectrum, measured with an accuracy of typically 0.01–0.02 Hz, was found to be on the average 10 Hz greater than that predicted by the standard solar model of Saio (1982). Rotational splitting effects up to fifth order inm were obtained. The multiplet fine structure that is linear inm was found to be consistent with the internal rotation curve obtained by Hillet al. (1986a). The multiplet fine structure that is described by terms that are cubic and fifth order inm were found to be consistent with the differential rotation curve of Hillet al. (1986b). The probability that this set of 19 Zeeman-like frequency patterns were obtained from a set of peaks randomly distributed in frequency was estimated to be 10–9. The effectiveness of the mode detection and classification program in this work has been established in part by observing the horizontal spatial properties of thef-mode eigenfunctions. One consequence obtained from the study of the horizontal spatial properties of the modes is the estimate, obtained observationally, of the number of correct mode identifications: these results indicate that 73±6% of the 374 modes are correctly classified.SCLERA is an acronym for Santa Catalina Laboratory for Experimental Relativity by Astrometry, a facility operated by the University of Arizona.  相似文献

An asymptotic representation is developed for high order unstable gravity modes in a star which are associated with a convective zone enclosed between two radiative layers. In the domain which contains both turning points of the differential equation, the solutions are represented by a single asymptotic expansion in terms of Weber functions.  相似文献

The geopotential expansion is givenentirely in terms of nonsingular orbital elements. The expansion and its derivatives are valid for zero eccentricity and inclination. The development begins with the geopotential expansion in singular, classical elements as given by Izsak (1964), Allan (1965) and Kaula (1966). The singular geopotential is then transformed into a nonsingular set of elements  相似文献

An analytical expression of the force function of a slightly elliptical Gaussian ring is proposed. The obtained power expansion of ellipse eccentricity contains the terms up to the third power inclusive. The coefficients of this expansion depend on the coordinates of the sampling point and semi-major axis of the ellipse. In the advanced application to the system of the major moons of Uranus for the investigation into secular mutual perturbations, the generalization of the force function is performed for the case of a nearly coplanar system of rings. The force function obtained in this work is more accurate than the earlier known ones and includes the terms up to the third power inclusive with respect to the eccentricities and equatorial inclinations of the moons’ orbits.  相似文献

We present the first tests of a new method, the correlated component analysis (CCA) based on second-order statistics, to estimate the mixing matrix, a key ingredient to separate astrophysical foregrounds superimposed to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). In the present application, the mixing matrix is parametrized in terms of the spectral indices of Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions, while the free–free spectral index is prescribed by basic physics, and is thus assumed to be known. We consider simulated observations of the microwave sky with angular resolution and white stationary noise at the nominal levels for the Planck satellite, and realistic foreground emissions, with a position-dependent synchrotron spectral index. We work with two sets of Planck frequency channels: the low-frequency set, from 30 to 143 GHz, complemented with the Haslam 408 MHz map, and the high-frequency set, from 217 to 545 GHz. The concentration of intense free–free emission on the Galactic plane introduces a steep dependence of the spectral index of the global Galactic emission with Galactic latitude, close to the Galactic equator. This feature makes difficult for the CCA to recover the synchrotron spectral index in this region, given the limited angular resolution of Planck , especially at low frequencies. A cut of a narrow strip around the Galactic equator  (| b | < 3°)  , however, allows us to overcome this problem. We show that, once this strip is removed, the CCA allows an effective foreground subtraction, with residual uncertainties inducing a minor contribution to errors on the recovered CMB power spectrum.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of solar acoustic mode frequencies and their rotational splittings for modes with degree up to 900. They were obtained by applying spherical harmonic decomposition to full-disk solar images observed by the Michelson Doppler Imager onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft. Global helioseismology analysis of high-degree modes is complicated by the fact that the individual modes cannot be isolated, which has limited so far the use of high-degree data for structure inversion of the near-surface layers (r>0.97R ). In this work, we took great care to recover the actual mode characteristics using a physically motivated model which included a complete leakage matrix. We included in our analysis the following instrumental characteristics: the correct instantaneous image scale, the radial and non-radial image distortions, the effective position angle of the solar rotation axis, and a correction to the Carrington elements. We also present variations of the mode frequencies caused by the solar activity cycle. We have analyzed seven observational periods from 1999 to 2005 and correlated their frequency shift with four different solar indices. The frequency shift scaled by the relative mode inertia is a function of frequency alone and follows a simple power law, where the exponent obtained for the p modes is twice the value obtained for the f modes. The different solar indices present the same result.  相似文献

We describe and apply a new helioseismic method for measuring solar subsurface axisymmetric meridional and zonal flow. The method is based on a theoretical model of the response of global-oscillation eigenfunctions to the flow velocity and uses cross spectra of the time-varying coefficients in the spherical-harmonic expansion of the photospheric Doppler-velocity field. Eigenfunction changes modify the leakage matrix, which describes the sensitivity of the spherical-harmonic coefficients to the global-oscillation modes. The form of the leakage matrix in turn affects the theoretically expected spherical-harmonic cross spectra. Estimates of internal meridional and zonal flow were obtained by fitting the theoretical flow-dependent cross spectra to spherical-harmonic cross spectra computed from approximately 500 days of full-disk Dopplergrams from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the SDO spacecraft. The zonal-flow measurements, parameterized in the form of “a” coefficients, substantially agree with measurements obtained from conventional global-mode-frequency analysis. The meridional-flow estimates, in the form of depth-weighted averages of the flow velocity, are similar to estimates obtained from earlier analyses, for oscillation modes that penetrate the outermost one-third of the convection zone. For more deeply penetrating modes, the inferred flow velocity increases significantly with penetration depth, indicating the need for either a modification of the simple conveyor-belt picture of meridional flow or improvement in the cross-spectral model.  相似文献

The existence proof of continuous spectra of eigenvaluess developed in the framework of the function space ofq-regularizations (Perdang, 1976) is extended in this paper by relaxing the severe restrictions previously imposed o the mathematical structure of the stellar stability equations. It is stressed that these local modes depend on the variable system in terms of which the linearized stellar structure equations are set up. We therefore search for a systematic procedure to select the most satisfactory system to analyze Local Stability. Our procedure is illustrated in great detail in the case of nonradial adiabatic stability. Moreover when applied to nonadiabatic perturbations it reveals the existence of two new types of local instability which seem to prevail in the majority of stars in a thermonuclear burning phase: (a) a nonrdial local secular instability; (b) a radial local nuclear instability. Numerical test calculations exhibit that the latter helps us to understand certain evolutionary features of stars, in particular it provides an interpretation of Hayashiet al.'s (1962) rule.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to study the effects of an external magnetic field generated by a magnetized compact star on the outflows of its accretion disc. For this purpose, we solve a set of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations for an accretion disc in spherical coordinates to consider the disc structure along the θ-direction. We also consider the magnetic field of a compact star beyond its surface as a dipolar field, producing a toroidal magnetic field inside the disc. We convert the equations to a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) as a function of the θ only by applying self-similar assumptions in the radial direction. Then, this set of equations is solved under symmetrical boundary conditions in the equatorial plane to obtain the velocity field. The results are considered in the gas-pressure-dominated (GPD) region and radiation-pressure-dominated (RPD) region as well. The dipolar field of the compact stars can significantly enhance the speed of outflows. It also can change the structure of the disc. The results of this work would be useful in the study of X-ray binaries, the origin of ultra-relativistic outflows, and jet formation around the compact stars.  相似文献

An expression is derived for the solar radiation pressure disturbing function on an Earth satellite orbit which takes into account the variation of the solar radiation flux with distance from the Sun's centre and the absorption of radiation by the satellite. This expression is then expanded in terms of the Keplerian elements of the satellite and solar orbits using Kaula's method. The Kaula inclination functions are replaced by an equivalent set of modified Allan inclination functions. The resulting expression reduces to the form commonly used in solar radiation pressure perturbation studies (e.g. Aksnes, 1976), when certain terms are neglected. If, as happens quite often in practice, a satellite's orbit is in near-resonsnce with certain of these neglected terms, these near-resonant terms can cause changes in the satellite's orbital elements comparable to those produced by the largest term in Aksnes's expression. A new expression for the solar radiation pressure disturbing function expansion is suggested for use in future studies of satellite orbits perturbed by solar radiation pressure.  相似文献

The exact analytic solution is introduced for the rotational motion of a rigid body having three equal principal moments of inertia and subjected to an external torque vector which is constant for an observer fixed with the body, and to arbitrary initial angular velocity. In the paper a parametrization of the rotation by three complex numbers is used. In particular, the rows of the rotation matrix are seen as elements of the unit sphere and projected, by stereographic projection, onto points on the complex plane. In this representation, the kinematic differential equation reduces to an equation of Riccati type, which is solved through appropriate choices of substitutions, thereby yielding an analytic solution in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions. The rotation matrix is recovered from the three complex rotation variables by inverse stereographic map. The results of a numerical experiment confirming the exactness of the analytic solution are reported. The newly found analytic solution is valid for any motion time length and rotation amplitude. The present paper adds a further element to the small set of special cases for which an exact solution of the rotational motion of a rigid body exists.  相似文献
