The effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations on plant polyphenolic, tannin, nitrogen, phosphorus and total nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations were investigated in leaves of subtropical grass and fynbos shrub species. The hypothesis tested was that carbon-based secondary compounds would increase when carbon gain is in excess of growth requirements. This premise was tested in two ecosystems involving plants with different photosynthetic mechanisms and growth strategies. The first ecosystem comprised grasses from a C4-dominated, subtropical grassland, where three plots were subjected to three different free air CO2 enrichment treatments, i.e., elevated (600 to 800 μmol mol−1), intermediate (400 μmol mol−1) and ambient atmospheric CO2. One of the seven grass species, Alloteropsis semialata, had a C3 photosynthetic pathway while the other grasses were all C4. The second ecosystem was simulated in a microcosm experiment where three fynbos species were grown in open-top chambers at ambient and 700 μmol mol−1 atmospheric CO2 in low nutrient acid sands typical of south western coastal and mountain fynbos ecosystems. Results showed that polyphenolics and tannins did not increase in the grass species under elevated CO2 and only in Leucadendron laureolum among the fynbos species. Similarly, foliar nitrogen content of grasses was largely unaffected by elevated CO2, and among the fynbos species, only L. laureolum and Leucadendron xanthoconus showed changes in foliar nitrogen content under elevated CO2, but these were of different magnitude. The overall decrease in nitrogen and phosphorus and consequent increase in C:N and C:P ratio in both ecosystems, along with the increase in polyphenolics and tannins in L. laureolum in the fynbos ecosystem, may negatively affect forage quality and decomposition rates. It is concluded that fast growing grasses do not experience sink limitation and invest extra carbon into growth rather than polyphenolics and tannins and show small species-specific chemical changes at elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Responses of fynbos species are varied and were species-specific.  相似文献

We present a preliminary analysis of medium resolution optical spectra of comet C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) obtained on 22 November 2001. Theemission lines of the molecules C2, C3, CN, NH2,H2O+ and presumably CO (Asundi and triplet bands) and C2 -were identified in these spectra. By analysing the brightnessdistributions of the C2, C3, CN emission lines along theslit of the spectrograph we determined some physical parameters of theseneutrals, such as their lifetimes and expansion velocities inthe coma. The Franck–Condon factors for the CO Asundi bands and C2 - bands were calculated using a Morse potential model.  相似文献

We study the problem of critical inclination orbits for artificial lunar satellites, when in the lunar potential we include, besides the Keplerian term, the J 2 and C 22 terms and lunar rotation. We show that, at the fixed points of the 1-D averaged Hamiltonian, the inclination and the argument of pericenter do not remain both constant at the same time, as is the case when only the J 2 term is taken into account. Instead, there exist quasi-critical solutions, for which the argument of pericenter librates around a constant value. These solutions are represented by smooth curves in phase space, which determine the dependence of the quasi-critical inclination on the initial nodal phase. The amplitude of libration of both argument of pericenter and inclination would be quite large for a non-rotating Moon, but is reduced to <0°.1 for both quantities, when a uniform rotation of the Moon is taken into account. The values of J 2, C 22 and the rotation rate strongly affect the quasi-critical inclination and the libration amplitude of the argument of pericenter. Examples for other celestial bodies are given, showing the dependence of the results on J 2, C 22 and rotation rate.  相似文献

An observation program for measuring the activity of Comet Hale-Bopp was conducted at the Observatoire de Haute Provence from August 1996 to April 1997. Narrow band images were obtained from the 120 cm telescope. A set of four filters at 513, 516, 527 and 682 nm was used to measure the C2 emission in the (1,1) and (0,0) band and the intensity of the dust-scattered continuum. The luminosity of the central part of the coma was measured in the continuum and C2 emissions, as a function of heliocentric distance before perihelion. The activity of the comet considerably increased between October 1996 and February 1997. The images obtained in August, September and October 1996 show the presence of strong jets. In February, March and April 1997, series of roughly concentric arcs were observed in the sunward hemisphere of the coma. The arcs were also detected in the spatial distribution of the I(682 nm)/I(527 nm) red color ratio and the I(513 nm)/I(516 nm) C2 emission ratio. Using the I(513 nm)/I(516 nm) ratio as a parameter to measure the degree of excitation of C2 molecules, we can show that the local production of gas, probably resulting from dust fragmentation, should be taken into account. In order to monitor the various phenomena of comets, we continuously made the near-nucleus imaging observations of comets at National Astronomical Observatory, Mitaka. Here we report on the results of the observations of two spectacular comets. One is the analysis of photometry of C2 emission images in the coma of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2). By comparing the production rates of C2 radicals with C2H2 molecules, we conclude that the most C2 radicals were originated from C2H2, while some of them might be produced from other parents. The second item is the analysis of the morphology of C2 emission images in the coma of comet Hale-Bopp(C/1995 O1). By applying a ring masking technique, we detected asymmetrical distribution of the C2 molecules. The results of these two comets might suggest that a portion of C2 radicals were formed by the disintegration of the small organic dust grains, like the so-called CHON particles. Using the 20-m Onsala Observatory telescope (Sweden), we performed observations of the CH3C2H(6-5) line toward several regions of massive star formation to estimate the kinetic temperature of the gas and study its variations over the sources. Intense lines were detected in five objects. For these, we estimated the kinetic temperature of the gas near the CS and N2H+ molecular emission peaks by the method of population diagrams. A significant temperature difference between these peaks is noticeable only in W3 and, to a lesser degree, in DR 21. In the remaining cases, it is insignificant. This indicates that the chemical differentiation of the molecules in these regions cannot be associated with temperature variations. The kinetic temperature determined from methyl acetylene observations is usually slightly higher than the temperature estimated from ammonia observations. This is probably because the methyl acetylene emission originates in denser, i.e., deeper and hotter layers of the cloud.  相似文献

Experimental results on fast ion collision with icy surfaces having astrophysical interest are presented. 252Cf fission fragments projectiles were used to induce ejection of ionized material from H2O, CO2, CO, NH3, N2, O2 and Ar ices; the secondary ions were identified by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. It is observed that all the bombarded frozen gas targets emit cluster ions which have the structure XnR±, where X is the neutral ice molecule and R± is either an atomic or a molecular ion. The shape of the positive or negative ion mass spectra is characterized by a decreasing yield as the emitted ion mass increases and is generally described by the sum of two exponential functions. The positive ion water ice spectrum is dominated by the series (H2O)nH3O+ and the negative ion spectrum by the series (H2O)nOH and (H2O)nO. The positive ion CO2 ice spectrum is characterized by R+ = C+, O+, CO+, O2+ or CO2+ and the negative one by R = CO3. The dominant series for ammonia ice correspond to R+ = NH4+ and to R = NH2. The oxygen series are better described by (O3)nOm+ secondary ions where m = 1, 2 or 3. Two positive ion series exist for N2 ice: (N2)nN2+ and (N2)nN+. For argon positive secondary ions, only the (Ar)nAr+ series was observed. Most of the detected molecular ions were formed by one-step reactions. Ice temperature was varied from ∼20 K to complete sublimation.  相似文献

Photopolarimetric observations of comet Austin with the IAU/IHW filter system were obtained on the 2.34 m Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT) of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, at Kavalur, India, during pre-perihelion phase on February 20,1990 and on the 1.2 m telescope of the Physical Research Laboratory at Gurusikhar, Mount Abu during postperihelion phase on May 2 and 4, 1990. The comet appeared bluer than a solar analog during post-perihelion phase on May 2 and 4. The percent polarization shows a sharp increase towards the red on May 2 and 4. The dominant sizes of the dust particles appear to lie in a narrow range of 0.1 to 0.5 Μm. Regarding the molecular band emission, CN and C2 bands are quite strong; C3 emission was also found to be strong though the observations on May 2 and 4 show significant variation as compared to C2 emission. Molecular band polarization for CN, C3, C2 and H2 O+ have been calculated. It has been found that emission polarization in CN, C2 and C3 is between 1–7% (phase angle between 107.4–109 degrees). For CN and C2 the polarization values are close to the theoretically predicted values, but for C3 the polarization value falls much below the theoretically predicted value. As part of a multiproxy investigation, phytoliths were extracted from sediments in a 197-m core in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. They provide a continuous vegetation–climate record spanning the time period from at least the last interglacial (marine oxygen isotope stage 5) to the present. The phytolith record demonstrates that grass/cyperaceae grew during warmer periods and woody taxa dominated the site during colder periods.During the present interglacial, the Poukawa basin is occupied by a shallow lake surrounded by an extensive fen. During colder–drier periods, the floor of the basin dried out and woody taxa occupied the basin floor. This contrasts with the pollen record, which demonstrates a converse pattern. The apparent discrepancy reflects the purely local provenance of the phytolith assemblage.Significant changes in phytolith assemblages occur at the same depth as major tephras, indicating a sharp decline in trees and shrubs and a surge in grass and cyperaceae. A series of successional changes follow each major tephra fall. Initially, the woody taxa are killed off and replaced by grass and cyperaceae that rapidly colonise the fresh surface. Trees and or shrubs succeed the grass and cyperaceae after a significant lag.  相似文献

We present here the first numerical results of our analytical theory of an artificial satellite of the Moon. The perturbation method used is the Lie Transform for averaging the Hamiltonian of the problem, in canonical variables: short-period terms (linked to l, the mean anomaly) are eliminated first. We achieved a quite complete averaged model with the main four perturbations, which are: the synchronous rotation of the Moon (rate ), the oblateness J 2 of the Moon, the triaxiality C 22 of the Moon ( ) and the major third body effect of the Earth (ELP2000). The solution is developed in powers of small factors linked to these perturbations up to second-order; the initial perturbations being sorted ( is first-order while the others are second-order). The results are obtained in a closed form, without any series developments in eccentricity nor inclination, so the solution apply for a wide range of values. Numerical integrations are performed in order to validate our analytical theory. The effect of each perturbation is presented progressively and separately as far as possible, in order to achieve a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms. We also highlight the important fact that it is necessary to adapt the initial conditions from averaged to osculating values in order to validate our averaged model dedicated to mission analysis purposes.  相似文献

Condensation of frosts on Mars should depend not only on temperature and degree of vapor supersaturation but also on the nature of dust particles that would act as condensation nuclei. For a given particle size, the favorability of a condensate nucleator is determined by (1) degree of crystallographic misfit, or disregistry (δ), between substrate and condensate, (2) chemical-bond compatibility between substrate and condensate, and (3) abundance of substrate surface defects that would encourage assembly of condensate atoms or molecules. New data on ice-forming characteristics of candidate Martian materials, obtained by differential scanning calorimetry, confirmed previous evidence for systematic variations in ice-nucleation temperature, Tin, among geologic materials. By considering individual types of minerals separately, factors (2) and (3) can be held relatively constant and differences in nucleation effectiveness can be estimated by computation of (1). Both calorimetry data and cloud-chamber (literature) data indicate that Tin varies inversely with minimum absolute value of disregistry, /δ/. On Mars, H2OIc might be an important form of water ice whereas H2OIh is the common form on Earth. Phase H2OIc offers the lowest overall /δ/ values for heterogeneous nucleation of other condensates, including H2OIh, solid CO2, and CO2 hydrate, suggesting that the best overall mineral nuclei might be those that most effectively nucleate H2OIc. Based on /δ/ values, good nucleators of H2OIc should include nonexpandable clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite, chlorite), certain zeolites (e.g., clinoptilolite), goethite, and bassanite. Although goethite might preferentially nucleate H2OIc, hematite should preferentially nucleate H2OIh. Cryptocrystalline mineraloids (e.g., palagonite) should be generally poor nucleators and nucleating abilities of expandable clay minerals (e.g., nontronite, montmorillonite) should vary significantly with degree of c-axis expansion, as controlled by degree of interlayer hydration.  相似文献

Analytical theory for short-term orbit motion of satellite orbits with Earth's zonal harmonicsJ 3 andJ 4 is developed in terms of KS elements. Due to symmetry in KS element equations, only two of the nine equations are integrated analytically. The series expansions include terms of third power in the eccentricity. Numerical studies with two test cases reveal that orbital elements obtained from the analytical expressions match quite well with numerically integrated values during a revolution. Typically for an orbit with perigee height, eccentricity and inclination of 421.9 km, 0.17524 and 30 degrees, respectively, maximum differences of 27 and 25 cm in semimajor axis computation are noted withJ 3 andJ 4 term during a revolution. For application purposes, the analytical solutions can be used for accurate onboard computation of state vector in navigation and guidance packages.  相似文献

We present the results of polarimetric and photometricobservations of split Comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR), which wereobtained at the 70-cm telescope of the Astronomical Observatoryof Kharkiv National University between 30 June and 31 July 2001.The brightest fragment of the comet, nucleus B, was observed.Eight narrowband cometary filters in the continuum and in emissionbands and a wideband red filter have been used. The comet wasobserved through apertures of 88, 33, and 19 arcsec. Polarizationphase curves were obtained for the continuum and for the firsttime, for NH2(0, 7, 0) emission. The degree of polarization ofthe light scattered by the dust decreases with the increase ofaperture size. An important temporal variation of the polarizationwith a rotation of the polarization plane was observed at twophase angles (26.5° and 36.2°). Molecular column densities and production rates of CN, C2,C3, and NH2 species are calculated in the framework of theHaser model. A comparative analysis of the temporal variations ofthe visual magnitudes, gas and dust production rates, dust colorand polarization are presented.  相似文献

The aim of the study is to calibrate the phytolith index of tree cover density, D/P (the ratio of ligneous dicotyledons phytoliths (D) over Poaceae phytoliths (P)) with Leaf Area Index (LAI) measurements. LAI is the vertically integrated surface of leaves per unit of ground area (m2 leaves/m2 ground). Modern soil samples from southeastern Cameroon, collected along a continuous forest–savanna transect, have been analyzed for phytoliths. Phytolith assemblages and D/P index clearly record the physiognomy of the forest and savanna communities and of the transition between both of them. A highly significant relationship was obtained between D/P and LAI. The relationship between phytolith data and the vegetation transect is also discussed and compared with existing palynological results obtained along the same transect.  相似文献

The response of natural vegetation to climate change is of global concern. In this research, an aggregated Holdridge Life Zone System was used to study the possible response of life zones in China under doubled atmospheric CO2 concentration with the input climatic parameters at 0.5×0.5° resolution of longitude and latitude from NCAR regional climate model 2 (RegCM2) coupled with the CSIRO global climate model. The results indicate that the latitudinal distribution of life zones would become irregular because of the complicated climate change. In particular, new life zones, such as subtropical desert (SD), tropical desert (TDE) and tropical thorn woodland (TTW), would appear. Subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest (SEBF), tropical rainforest and monsoon forest (TRF), SD, TDE and TTW zones would appear in the northeastern China. Cool-temperate mixed coniferous and broadleaved forest (CMC) and warm-temperate deciduous broadleaved forest (WDBF) zones would appear at latitudes 25–35°N. The temperate desert (TD) in the western China would become Tibetan high-cold plateau (THP), SEBF, WDBF and temperate steppe (TS), and a large part of THP would be replaced by TRF, TDE, SEBF, TS and TTW. The relative area (distribution area/total terrestrial area) of CMC, TRF, TDE and TTW zone would increase about 3%, 21%, 3% and 6%, respectively. However, the relative area of SEBF, TS, TD and THP would decrease about 5%, 3%, 19% and 4%, respectively. In all, the relative area of forests (CCF, CMC, WDBF, SEBF, TRF) would increase about 15%, but the relative area of desert (TD, SD, TDE, and TTW) and THP would decrease about 9% and 4%, respectively. Therefore, responses of different life zones in China to climate change would be dramatic, and nationwide corridors should be considered for the conservation of migrating species under climate change.  相似文献

We have theoretically studied the influence of a far-infrared radiation (FIR) field from Hπ region on the cooling by C and O atoms, C+ ion and CO molecule in a photodissociation region, and a molecular cloud associated with Hπ region (hereinafter referred as HI region) at low temperatures (T k≤200 K). Comparisons have been made for cooling with and without FIR for two extreme abundances (10−4 and 10−7) of the mentioned species for temperatures ranging between 10 and 200K and an hydrogen particle density range 10 cm−3n o≤ 107 cm3. The cooling by the species with low line-splitting (CI, Cπ and CO) is significantly influenced by the radiation field for temperaturesT k < 100 K while the effect of radiation field on cooling by OI is significant even at higher temperatures (T k > 100 K). The effect of FIR field on the cooling of CO from low rotational transitions is negligibly small, whereas it is considerable for higher transitions. In general, the cooling terms related to the short-wavelength transitions are more affected by FIR than those related to longer wavelengths. It is also demonstrated here that in the determination of thermal structure of an HI region the dust grains play an important role in the heating of gas only through photoelectron emission following irradiation by far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation, as the infrared radiation from the dust is too small to have substantial effect on the cooling. It is found that in the Hπ /HI interface the FIR field from grains in the Hπ region is not capable of modifying the temperature of the warmest regions but does so in the inner part where the temperature is low enough.  相似文献

The dynamic climate in the Northern Hemisphere during the early Holocene could be expected to have impacted on the global carbon cycle. Ice core studies however, show little variability in atmospheric CO2. Resolving any possible centennial to decadal CO2 changes is limited by gas diffusion through the firn layer during bubble enclosure. Here we apply the inverse relationship between stomatal index (measured on sub-fossil leaves) and atmospheric CO2 to complement ice core records between 11,230 and 10,330 cal. yr BP. High-resolution sampling and radiocarbon dating of lake sediments from the Faroe Islands reconstruct a distinct CO2 decrease centred on ca. 11,050 cal. yr BP, a consistent and steady decline between ca. 10,900 and 10,600 cal. yr BP and an increased instability after ca. 10,550 cal. yr BP. The earliest decline lasting ca. 150 yr is probably associated with the Preboreal Oscillation, an abrupt climatic cooling affecting much of the Northern Hemisphere a few hundred years after the end of the Younger Dryas. In the absence of known global climatic instability, the decline to ca. 10,600 cal. yr BP is possibly due to expanding vegetation in the Northern Hemisphere. The increasing instability in CO2 after 10,600 cal. yr BP occurs during a period of increasing cooling of surface waters in the North Atlantic and some increased variability in proxy climate indicators in the region.The reconstructed CO2 changes also show a distinct similarity to indicators of changing solar activity. This may suggest that at least the Northern Hemisphere was particularly sensitive to changes in solar activity during this time and that atmospheric CO2 concentrations fluctuated via rapid responses in climate.  相似文献

The heat needed to melt snow over the Tien Shan mountains and Japanese Islands for 10-day period (TDP) was estimated. Melting curves and a map of snowmelt duration were obtained through the long-term data from 79 stations in the Tien Shan mountains and 20 stations in the Japanese Islands. At high elevations in the mountains, about 40% of the snow melts during penultimate 10 days of snow cover. In the Japanese Islands, about 80% of the snow melts during the last 20 days of snow cover. Over the mountains, 0.13×104 MJ m2 year−1 is needed to melt snow in the northern and western Tien Shan where maximum snow accumulation occurred. The volume of air cooled 10 °C by snowmelt amounted to 4.4×106 km3 year−1 over the Tien Shan mountains and 3×106 km3 year−1 over the Japanese Islands. The most significant impact of snowmelt on air temperature was observed at an elevation of 2500 m in the western and northern Tien Shan. Air that was cooled 10 °C could reach an elevation of 2.1 km day−1. Over the Japanese Islands, energy losses from snowmelt amounted to 0.26×1014 MJ year−1 and the maximum occurred over Honshu Island. The heat loss from snowmelt in the Tien Shan mountains and Japanese Islands amounted to about 2/3 of heat loss in the Eurasian continental plains.  相似文献
