We have obtained broadband spectrophotometric observations of four of the recently discovered small satellites of Saturn (Gladman et al., 2001, Nature 412, 163-166). The new data enable an understanding of the provenance, composition, and interrelationships among these satellites and the other satellites of Saturn, particularly Iapetus, Phoebe, and Hyperion. Temporal coverage of one satellite (S21 Tarvos) was sufficient to determine a partial rotational lightcurve. Our major findings include: (1) the satellites are red and similar in color, comparable to D-type asteroids, some KBOs, Iapetus, and Hyperion; (2) none of the satellites, including those from the “Phoebe Group” has any spectrophotometric relationship to Phoebe; and (3) S21 Tarvos exhibits a rotational lightcurve, although the data are not well-constrained and more observations are required to fit a definitive period. Dust created by meteoritic impacts and ejected from these satellites and additional undiscovered ones may be the source of the exogenous material deposited on the low-albedo side of Iapetus. Recent work which states that the small irregular satellites of Saturn have impacted Phoebe at least 6-7 times in the age of the Solar System (Nesvorny et al., 2003, Astron. J. 126, 398-429), suggests that such collisions may have propelled additional material from both Phoebe and the small irregular satellites toward Iapetus. The accretion of material from outer retrograde satellites may be a process that also occurs on Callisto and the uranian satellites.  相似文献

Results of UBV photometry and polarimetry of 1580 Betulia during its 1976 apparition are presented. The synodic period of rotation is found to be 6.130 hr. The linear phase coefficient and absolute magnitude of the primary maximum in V are 0.032 mag/deg and 14.88, respectively. No color variations with rotation or solar phase angle detected, the mean colors being B?V = 0.66 and U?B = 0.24. Betulia's lightcurve is unique among asteroids studied to date in that it displays three maxima and three minima within one rotational cycle, indicative of a region of greater roughness and/or a dark spot on one of its broad faces. Polarization results indicate a low albedo and a mean diameter of about 7 km, establishing Betulia as the first C type asteroid to be found among the Mars crossers. A model accounting for most features of Betulia's lightcurve is given by a prolate spheroid rotating about one of its shorter axes having an axis ratio of 1:1.21 with a major topographic feature on one of its broad faces.  相似文献

Results of broad-band photoelectric photometry of 139 Juewa during 5 consecutive nights in March 1974 are presented. The synodic period found is 20.9 hr. A linear phase coefficient, β = 0.080 ± 0.004, is determined between phase angles of 0.9° to 1.5°. This value is similar to that for the lunar highlands and for three other asteroids (4 Vesta, 20 Massalia, 110 Lydia) at similar phase angles, indicating that these surfaces have comparable porosities. The composite lightcurve presented covers 80% of the rotational period; short timescale features in the lightcurve are seen which correspond to topography a few kilometers in size.  相似文献

The minor planet 164 Eva passed through opposition on December 1, 1975 with a magnitude Bopp = 11.3 mag. Photoelectric observations at the Observatory of Torino, Italy, were carried out in two nights on Oct. 27/28 and Nov. 11, each with a run of about 3 hr. Two further successful photoelectric observations were carried out at the OHP, France, each with a run of about 6 hr. From all observed parts of the lightcurve a resulting synodic period of rotation of about 27.3 hr can be deduced, with a range of the total amplitude of at least Δm = 0.07 mag. With this period of 27.3 hr the minor planet 164 Eva is one more long period object, falling now between 654 Zelinda (H. J. Schober, 1975, Astron. Astrophys.44, 85–89) and 139 Juewa (J. Goguen et al., 1976, Icarus29, 137–142), at the high end in the histogram of the distribution of minor planet rotation periods.  相似文献

Extensive photoelectric lightcurves of the asteroids 128 Nemesis and 393 Lampetia show for both objects extremely long rotational periods, the longest known to date for minor planets. For 393 Lampetia the combined results suggest with high probability a period of 38.7 hr with a maximal amplitude of 0.14 mag; a double-wave characteristic of the lightcurve must be assumed. For 128 Nemesis the complete double-wave lightcurve was observed and a period of 39.0 hr with a total amplitude of only 0.10 mag was deduced. Observations of 128 Nemesis confirm without doubt the presence of small-scale features of amplitude 0.01 to 0.02 mag, corresponding to small topographic features of about 15 km in height and width on the surface.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations of 1915 Quetzalcoatl on March 2, 1981 show that this asteroid has a rotational period of 4.9 ± 0.3 hr and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.26 magnitudes. B-V and U-B colors are found to be 0.83 ± 0.04 and 0.43 ± 0.03, respectively, consistent with Quetzalcoatl being an S-type asteroid. Additional observations from March 31, 1981 give a linear phase coefficient of 0.033 mag deg?1 and a mean B(1,0) magnitude of 20.10. The resulting estimated mean diameter for Quetzalcoatl is only 0.37 km, making it one of the smallest asteroids for which physical observations have yet been made.  相似文献

We present the results of photometric observations of Saturn's seventh satellite Hyperion and four other planetary satellites: Saturn's moon Phoebe and three Jovian satellites Himalia, Elara, and Pasiphae. The observations have been conducted from September, 1999 to March, 2000, and during September–October, 2000. Analysis of periodic variations in Hyperion's lightcurve was performed. The lightcurve was modeled using the software package developed for calculating the rotational dynamics of a satellite. Our data generally indicate that over the period of observations Hyperion was in the chaotic mode of rotation.  相似文献

We study the evolution of several distant satellite orbits. These are the orbits (including the improved ones)of the recently discovered Neptunian satellites S/2002 N1, N2, N3, N4; S/2003 N1 and the orbits of Jovian, Saturnian, and Uranian satellites with librational variations in the argument of the pericenter: S/2001 J10 (Euporie), S/2003 J20; S/2000 S5 (Kiviuq), S/2000 S6 (Ijiraq), and S/2003 U3. The study is performed using mainly an approximate numerical-analytical method. We determine the extreme eccentricities and inclinations as well as the periods of the variations in the arguments of pericenters and longitudes of the ascending nodes on time intervals ~105?106 yr. We compare our results with those obtained by numerically integrating the rigorous equations of satellite motion on time intervals of the order of the circulation periods of the longitudes of the ascending nodes (102?103 yr).  相似文献

The addition of the unbiased sample of R. P. Binzel and J. D. Mulholland (Icarus56, 519–533) nearly triples the sample size of photoelectrically determined rotational parameters for main belt asteroids with estimated diameters (D) ≤30 km. Nonparametric stattistical tests which require no assumptions about the distributions or variances of the samples are used to examine rotational parameters for all D ≤ 30 km asteroids. A comparison of photoelectric and photographic results shows that the techniques have a highly significant difference in the range of detected frequencies. This difference does not allow photographic and photoelectric observations to be combined for meaningful statistical tests since a photographic bias toward smaller sample variances can induce statistical results that appear overly significant. Photographic observations also show a highly significant bias toward detecting asteroids with larger lightcurve amplitudes. The fit of a Maxwellian to the observed rotational frequency distribution can be rejected at a highly significant confidence level but the observed distribution can be acceptably fit by two Maxwellian distributions, which is consistent with the hypothesis that there are separate populations of slow and fast rotating asteroids. The frequency distributions of <15 km main belt asteroids and Earth and Mars crossers are not found to differ significantly. However, the larger mean lightcurve amplitude of the Earth and Mars crossing asteroids is found to be statistically significant. This latter result is interesting in view of the lack of any strong inverse amplitude versus diameter relation for small asteroids. No significant diameter dependence on rotational frequency is seen among only D ≤ 30 km asteroids. However, the inverse frequency versus diameter relation for D ≤ 120 km asteroids found by S. F. Dermott, A. W. Harris, and C. D. Murray (Icarus, in press) is found to be statistically significant using a linear least-squares analysis of photoelectric data only. No significant diameter dependence on rotational lightcurve amplitude is seen using linear least-squares analysis of photoelectric data for D≤30 and D≤90 km asteroids. However, a significant inverse amplitude versus diameter relation is found when this analysis is extended to D≤120 km asteroids. This finding may be consistent with the hypothesis of Dermott et al. that near 120 km there is a transition between primordial asteroids and their collisional fragments.  相似文献

Identified as possible flyby targets for the Galileo spacecraft, Asteroids 1219 Britta and 1972 Yi Xing became the focus of a coordinated observing program. Although a subsequent change in the launch date removed these asteroids from consideration for the Galileo mission, the ground-based observing program yielded a substantial amount of information on these previously unobserved asteroids. Britta's sideral rotation period is found to be 5.57497 ± 0.00013 hr and its rotation is retrograde. The lightcurve amplitude ranged from 0.60 to 0.70 mag, depending on phase angle. Britta can be classified as an S-type asteroids based on its measured spectra and albedo. The absolute magnitude and slope parameter derived from the lightcurve maxima are H0 = 11.67 ± 0.03 and G0 = 0.03 ± 0.04. A 0.002 mag deg−1 phase reddening in B·V was also measured. 1972 Yi Xing was less well observed but a unique synodic period of 14.183 ± 0.003 hr was determined. The observed lightcurve amplitude was 0.18 mag. Five-color measurements are consistent with an S-type classification. For an assumed slope parameter G = 0.25, Yi Xing's (lightcurve maximum) absolute magnitude H0 = 13.32 ± 0.01.  相似文献

We present a physical model to explain the existence of a class of large-lightcurve-amplitude, rapidly rotating asteroids found most commonly among objects in the size range 100–300 km diameter. A significant correlation between rotation period and lightcurve amplitude exists for asteroids in this size range in the sense that those with larger amplitudes spin more rapidly and hence these objects have high rotational angular momenta. Since this is a property of Jacobi ellipsoids, we have investigated whether these asteriods might be examples of triaxial equilibrium ellipsoids. We find that objects rotating with periods of 6 hr must have densities between 1.1 and 1.4 g cm?3, while those rotating in 4 hr would have densities between 2.4 and 3.2 g cm?3. If this model is valid then at least some of these asteroids have rather low mean densities. The reality of this result and its interpretation in terms of collisional evolution of the asteroids is discussed.  相似文献

After 26 years from the major event of 1990, in early 2016 the puzzling symbiotic binary MWC 560 has gone into a new and even brighter outburst. We present our tight BVRCIC photometric monitoring of MWC 560 (451 independent runs distributed over 357 different nights), covering the 2005–2016 interval, and the current outburst in particoular. A stricking feature of the 2016 outburst has been the suppression of the short term chaotic variability during the rise toward maximum brightness, and its dominance afterward with an amplitude in excess of 0.5 mag. Similar to the 1990 event when the object remained around maximum brightness for ∼6 months, at the time Solar conjunction prevented further observations of the current outburst, MWC 560 was still around maximum, three months past reaching it. We place our observations into a long term contex by combining with literature data to provide a complete 1928–2016 lightcurve. Some strong periodicities are found to modulate the optical photometry of MWC 560. A period of 1860 days regulate the occourence of bright phases at BVRC bands (with exactly 5.0 cycles separating the 1990 and 2016 outbursts), while the peak brightness attained during bright phases seems to vary with a ∼9570 days cycle. A clean 331 day periodicity modulate the IC lightcurve, where the emission from the M giant dominates, with a lightcurve strongly reminiscent of an ellipsoidal distortion plus irradiation from the hot companion. Pros and cons of 1860 and 331 days as the system orbital period are reviewed, waiting for a spectroscopic radial velocity orbit of the M giant to settle the question (provided the orbit is not oriented face-on).  相似文献

A radiative seasonal model which incorporates a multilayer radiative transfer treatment at wave-lengths longward of 7 μm is presented and applied to Saturn's stratosphere. Opacities due to H2-He, CH4, C2H2, and C2H6 are included. Season-dependent insolation is shown to produce a strong hemispheric asymmetry decreasing with depth at the Voyager encounter times, and seasonal amplitudes of 30°K at the poles are predicted in the high stratosphere. The ring-modulated dependence of the insolation and the orbital eccentricity are shown to have a significant effect. Calculations agree closely with the Voyager 1 and 2 radio occultation ingress profiles recorded at 76°S and 36.5°S for CH4/H2 = 3.5 + 1.4/? 1.0 × 10?3;the estimated errors include modeling systematic errors and uncertainties in the occultations profiles. The possible role of aerosols in the stratospheric heating is analyzed. The Voyager 2 egress profile recorded at 31°S cannot be reproduced by calculations. Some constraints on the C2H2 and C2H6 abundances are derived. The upper portion of the occultation profiles (p < 3mbar) can be matched for C2H2/H2 = 1.0 + 1.3/?0.6 × 10?7, C2H6/H2 = 1.5 + 1.8/?0.9 × 10?6 at 76°S and C2H2/H2 = 4 + 6/?4 × 10?8, C2H6/H2 = 6 + 9/?6 × 10?7 at 36.5°N. At the northern occultation latitude, the discrepancy with the concentrations derived from analysis of IRIS spectra by R. Courtin, D. Gautier, A. Marten, B. Bézard, and R. Hanel (1984, Astrophys. J.287) can be explained by a sharp variation of the mixing ratios of these gases with altitude in the upper stratosphere. Other interpretations are discussed.  相似文献

We present a set of rotational lightcurve measurements of the small main belt Asteroid 3169 Ostro. Our observations reveal an unambiguous, double-peaked rotational lightcurve with a peak-to-peak variation up to 1.2±0.05 mag and a synodic period of 6.509±0.001 h. From the large flux variation and the overall shape of the lightcurves, we suggest that 3169 Ostro could be a tightly bound binary or a contact binary, similar to the Trojan Asteroid 624 Hektor. A shape model of this system is proposed on the assumption that 3169 Ostro is a Roche binary described by a pair of homogeneous elongated bodies, with a size ratio of 0.87, in hydrostatic equilibrium and in circular synchronous motion around each other. The direction of the spin axis is determined modulo 180° by its J2000 ecliptic coordinates λ0=50±10°, β0=±54±5°. The binary interpretation and the pole solution adequately fit the earlier photometric observations made in 1986 and 1988. However, additional supporting lightcurves are highly desirable especially in the next mutual events occurrence of 2008 and 2009 in order to remove the pole ambiguity and to confirm unambiguously the binary nature of 3169 Ostro.  相似文献

The final Deep Space 1 (DS1) mission target, comet 19P/Borrelly, was observedfrom July 28–August 1, 2000 at the CTIO-1.5 m telescope in the R filter. Theobserved lightcurve has a large peak to peak variation between 0.84 mag and1.0 mag. A period of 26.0 ± 1 hr (assuming a double-peaked lightcurve)was found using all five nights. This is in good agreement with the period of25.02 ± 0.5 hr quoted by Lamy et al. (1998) using only 6 points ofHST data and is also consistent with HST data taken around the DS1 encountertime by Weaver et al. (2002).Using the mean magnitude R = 20.8 mag and assuming a 4% albedo, we derivean effective nuclear radius of 2.6 km. The large lightcurve amplitude translates toa long to intermediate axial ratio a/b ≥ 2.2, in excellent agreement with theHST result of a/b ≥ 2.4 (Lamy et al., 1998) and with DS1 images (Soderblom et al., 2002).  相似文献

A numerical investigation of the chaotic rotation of large planetary satellites before their synchronous spin-orbital resonance locking with regard to tidal friction is carried out. The rotational dynamics of seven large satellites greater than 1000 km in diameter and with known inertial parameters (Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto (J1–J4), Tethys (S3), Iapetus (S8), and Ariel (U1)) in the epoch of synchronous resonance locking is modeled. All of these satellites have a small dynamic asymmetry. The planar case is considered in which the satellite’s axis of rotation is orthogonal to the plane of orbit. The satellites possessing an initial rapid rotation pass through various resonant states during the tidal evolution. Here, the probability of their locking into these states exists. The numerical experiments presented in this paper have shown that, with a rather high arbitrariness in the choice of initial states, the satellites during the course of the tidal evolution of their rotational motion have passed without interruption through the regions of the 5: 2, 2: 1, and 3: 2 resonances in the phase space and are locked into the 1: 1 resonance. The estimate for the tidal deceleration time is obtained both theoretically and on the numerical experimental basis.  相似文献

Rotational data on 321 asteroids observed as of late 1978 are analyzed. Selection effects within the sample are discussed and used to define a data set consisting of 134 main-belt, nonfamily asteroids having reliably determined periods and amplitudes based on photoelectric observations. In contrast to A. W. Harris and J. A. Burns (1979, Icarus40, 115–144) we found no significant correlation between rotational properties and compositional type. Smaller asteroids have a greater range of rotational amplitudes than the largest asteroids but are not, on the average, appreciably more elongated. While no definite relationship between asteroid size and rotation rate was found the distribution is not random. The largest asteroids have rotation periods near 7 hr compared with 10 hr for the smaller. A group of large, rapidly rotating, high-amplitude asteroids is recognized. A pronounced change in rotational properties occurs near this size range (diam = 200 ± 50 km) which also corresponds to the size at which a change of slope occurs in the size frequency distribution. We believe this size range represents a transition region between very large, rapidly rotating, low-amplitude (primordial?) objects and smaller ones having a considerably greater range of periods and amplitudes. Asteroids in this transition size range display an increase in rotational amplitude with increasing spin rate; other than this, however, there is no correlation between period and amplitude. The region of low spatial density in the asteroid belt centered near 2.9 AU and isolated from the inner and outer belt by the 2:5 and 3:7 commensurabilities is shown to be a region in which non-C or -S asteroids are overrepresented and which have marginally higher rotational amplitudes than those located in more dense regions. We attribute disagreements between our results and other studies of this type to the inclusion of non-main-belt asteroids and photographic data in the earlier analyses.  相似文献

Voyager imaging observations provide new photometric data on Saturn's satellites at large phase angles (up to 133° in the case of Mimas) not observable from Earth. Significant new results include the determination of phase integrals ranging from 0.7 in the case of Rhea to 0.9 for Enceladus. For Enceladus we find an average geometric albedo pv = 1.04 ± 0.15 and Bond albedo of 0.9 ± 0.1. The data indicate an orbital lightcurve with an amplitude of 0.2 mag, the trailing side being the brighter. For Mimas, the lightcurve amplitude is probably less than 0.1 mag. The value of the geometric albedo of Mimas reported here, pv = 0.77 ± 0.15 (corresponding to a mean opposition magnitude V0 = +12.5) is definitely higher than the currently accepted value of about 0.5. For Dione, the Voyager data show a well-defined orbital lightcurve of amplitude about 0.6 mag, with the leading hemisphere brighter than the trailing one.  相似文献

We present observations of the Centaur (32532) 2001 PT13 taken between September 2000 and December 2000. A multi-wavelength lightcurve was assembled from V-, R- and J-band photometry measurements. Analysis of the lightcurve indicates that there are two peaks of slightly different brightness, a rotation period of 0.34741±0.00005 day, and a maximum photometric range of 0.18 mag. We obtained VRJHK colors (V-R=0.50±0.01, V-J=1.69±0.02, V-H=2.19±0.04, and V-K=2.30±0.04) that are consistent with the grey KBO/Centaur population. The V-R color shows no variation as a function of rotational phase; however, we cannot exclude the possibility that rotational variations are present in the R-J color. Assuming a 4% albedo, we estimate that 2001 PT13 has an effective diameter of 90 km and a minimum axial ratio a/b of 1.18. We find no evidence of a coma and place an upper limit of 15 g s−1 on the dust production rate.  相似文献

A modified spectroscopic technique yields a value for Uranus' period of 23?2+5 hr, which disagrees with the accepted value of 10.8 hr determined spectroscopically in the 1930s. Uranus' rotational axis is probably close to the perpendicular to the orbital plane of the satellites, as often assumed. Its projection on the plane of the sky is within 5° of the projection of the normal to the orbital plane of the satellites.  相似文献
