The distribution of axial rotation velocities of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) substantially differs from that of the Main-Belt asteroids by an excess of both quickly and slowly rotating objects. Among the possible causes of this difference is the influence of the solar radiation—the so-called YORP effect—that arises from the absorption of solar energy and its reemission in the thermal range by a rotating body of irregular shape. It is known that the magnitude of this effect depends on the asteroid size and the quantity of received solar energy (the insolation). Analysis of the observational data showed that the mean diameter of NEAs decreases from the middle of the distribution to the edges, i.e., the excess of both slowly (ω ≤ 2 rev/day) and quickly (ω = 8–11 rev/day) rotating objects is formed due to the asteroids with sizes smaller than those in the middle of the distribution, which agrees well with the influence of the YORP effect. Moreover, the dependence of the axial rotation velocity of NEAs on the relative insolation shows that, for the NEAs referred to, both excesses are found in orbits where, on average, they receive 8–10% more solar energy than the NEAs in the middle of the distribution. This result also agrees with the character of the influence of the YORP effect and can be considered as an additional argument in its support. Thus, the study showed that one can infer that the currently available observational data suggest the possible influence of the YORP effect on the axial rotation of the near-Earth asteroids having sizes of D ~ 2 km and less. This is the first attempt to find the influence of the YORP effect on the axial rotation of the NEA family as a whole.  相似文献

In an attempt to verify the suggestion by Harris and Burns (1979) that M-type asteroids in general have high spin rates we are currently involved in a programme of photoelectricUBV observations of M and CMEU asteroids. Recently we have thus determined rotation periods, light-curve amplitudes andUBV colour indices for the asteroids 201 Penelope and 250 Bettina, both of which are situated in the (C,M,E) domain of the two-colour diagram. The resulting periods are very short (cf., IAUC 3523 and 3527). In general, we find that both the M and CMEU asteroid groups appear to be characterized by fast rotations, large amplitudes and an avoidance of membership in Hirayama families.Based on observations partly obtained at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

It is proposed that a new mechanism—angular momentum drain—helps account for the relatively slow rotation rates of intermediate-sized asteroids. Impact ejecta on a spinning body preferentially escape in the direction of rotation. This material systematically drains away spin angular momentum, leading to the counterintuitive result that collisions can reduce the spin of midsized objects. For an asteroid of mass M spinning at frequency ω, a mass loss δM correspond to an average decrease in rotation rate δω ≈ ωδMM. A. W. Harris' (1979), Icarus40, 145–153) theory for the collisional evolution of asteroidal spins is significantly altered by inlusion of this effect. While the modified theory is still somewhat artificial, comparison of its predictions with the data of S. F. Dermott, A. W. Harris, and C. D. Murray (1984, Icarus57, 14–34) suggests that angular momentum drain is essential for understanding the statistics of asteroidal rotations.  相似文献

We present a physical model to explain the existence of a class of large-lightcurve-amplitude, rapidly rotating asteroids found most commonly among objects in the size range 100–300 km diameter. A significant correlation between rotation period and lightcurve amplitude exists for asteroids in this size range in the sense that those with larger amplitudes spin more rapidly and hence these objects have high rotational angular momenta. Since this is a property of Jacobi ellipsoids, we have investigated whether these asteriods might be examples of triaxial equilibrium ellipsoids. We find that objects rotating with periods of 6 hr must have densities between 1.1 and 1.4 g cm?3, while those rotating in 4 hr would have densities between 2.4 and 3.2 g cm?3. If this model is valid then at least some of these asteroids have rather low mean densities. The reality of this result and its interpretation in terms of collisional evolution of the asteroids is discussed.  相似文献

The YORP (Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack) effect is one of the mechanisms of the long-term dynamical evolution of asteroids. Compared with factors such as collision and gravitational perturbation, the YORP is of small magnitude, and the short-time scale observation effect is inconspicuous, which brings great difficulties to the direct measurement of the YORP. From the Asteroid Lightcurve Database, asteroids having a high confidence rotation period were selected for this study. Two subsample groups for identifying potential asteroids slowed by the YORP effect are provided by using the kernel density estimation method and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to analyze the rotation rate distribution characteristics of near-Earth asteroids and main belt asteroids; a screening model is proposed based on the light-curve data of seven YORP asteroids with YORP rotation acceleration, combined with the YORP intensity estimation method and the detection conditions of the YORP effect. Finally, ten candidates that can directly detect the YORP effect through light-curve data in the future are listed based on the screening model.  相似文献

The rotation rate distribution of small Main Belt asteroids is dominated by YORP and collisions. These mechanism act differently depending on the size of the bodies and give rise to non-linear effects when they both operate. Using a Monte Carlo method we model the formation of a steady state population of small asteroids under the influence of both mechanisms and the rotation rate distribution is compared to the observed one as derived from Pravec et al. (Pravec, P. et al. [2008]. Icarus 197, 497-504). A better match to observations is obtained with respect to the case in which only YORP is considered. In particular, an excess of slow rotators is produced in the model with both collisions and YORP because bodies driven to slow rotation by YORP have a random walk-like evolution of the spin induced by repeated collisions with small projectiles. This is a dynamical evolution different from tumbling and it lasts until a large impact takes the body to a faster rotation rate. According to our model, the rotational fission of small asteroids is a very frequent event and might explain objects like P/2010 A2 and its associated tail of millimeter-sized dust particles. The mass loss during fission of small asteroids might significantly influence the overall collisional evolution of the belt. Fission can in fact be considered as an additional erosion mechanism, besides cratering and fragmentation, acting only at small diameters.

Asteroids in general display only small or negligible variations in spectrum or albedo during a rotational cycle. Color variations with rotation are described in the literature but are usually comparable to the noise in the measurements. Twenty-four asteroids have been systematically monitored for such color changes. Only 3 Juno, 4 Vesta, 6 Hebe, 71 Niobe, 349 Dembowska, and 944 Hidalgo display color variations larger than 0.03 mag. In each of these cases the asteroid appears redder near maximum brightness. Of seven asteroids monitored polarimetrically, only 4 Vesta shows a convincing variation, attributed to an albedo change with rotation. The lightcurve can be explained by albedo differences alone; Vesta apparently has a nearly spheroidal shape. Notwithstanding the above results, the degree of uniformity of most asteroid surfaces is remarkable. If asteroids exist with large discrete domains of ferrosilicate, metallic, and/or carbonaceous material together on their surfaces, they have not yet been identified.  相似文献

Since about ten years coordinated programs of photoelectric observations of asteroids are carried out to derive rotation rates and light curves. Quite a number of those asteroids exhibit features in their light curves, with similar characteristics as variable stars and especially eclipsing binaries. This would allow also an interpretation that there might be an evidence for the binary nature of some asteroids, based on observational hints. A few examples are given and a list of indications for the possible binary nature of asteroids, based on their light curve features, is presented.Paper presented at the Lembang-Bamberg IAU Colloquium No. 80 on Double Stars: Physical Properties and Generic Relations, held at Bandung, Indonesia, 3–7 June, 1983.  相似文献

The volume of observational information on asteroids and trans-Neptunians with satellites has significantly increased in recent years. In this paper we study the dependence of asteroid duplicity on the main physical parameters of the primary: the size and rotation rate. The proportion of binary asteroids is shown to grow rapidly with the rotation rate of the primary. The pattern of dependence between asteroid duplicity and size is more complex, with peaks in the area of small (<10 km) and large (>100 km) bodies. Noteworthy is the small number of binaries among typical-sized asteroids (10–150 km). All the orbits of asteroidal satellites whose rotation direction is known are shown to be prograde and have small eccentricities and inclinations.  相似文献

The evolution of orbits of asteroids found in the IRAS and WISE albedo databases was calculated numerically from 2005 to 2016. It follows from the analysis of the obtained results that a certain nongravitational effect (NGE) currently affects the motion of a considerable fraction of main-belt asteroids with diameters up to 40 km. This conclusion agrees with the available data regarding the axial rotation of asteroids. The NGE manifests itself in an increase in the semimajor axes of orbits of low-albedo asteroids relative to the semimajor axes of orbits of high-albedo bodies. The NGE-induced rate of elongation of semimajor axes of asteroids with albedos рv < 0.1 may be as high as (2–8) × 10–8 AU/year. Errors in orbital elements of asteroids (unrelated to the accuracy of observational data used to determine these orbital elements) were found in one of the MPC catalogues for 2003 in the process of estimation of the accuracy of calculations.  相似文献

The ellipsoid shape model plays an important role in physical research on asteroids. However, its symmetric structure cannot practically simulate real asteroids. This article applies a general shape model, named the cellinoid, instead of the ellipsoid model to simulate the asymmetric shape of asteroids. The cellinoid shape model consists of eight octants of ellipsoids having different semi-axes, with the constraint that adjacent octants must have two equal semi-axes in common. Totally, the shape of the cellinoid model is controlled by six parameters, not three as in the case of the shape of the ellipsoid. Using this shape model, the brightness of asteroids observed from the Earth can be fitted numerically by the surface triangularization of the cellinoid. The Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is also employed here to solve a nonlinear minimization problem. Owing to the asymmetric shape of the cellinoid, the physical parameters of asteroids, such as the rotation period and pole orientation, can be fitted more accurately than in the case of the ellipsoid model. Finally, this is confirmed numerically by applying the shape to both synthetic light curves and real light curves of asteroids. Additionally, the center of mass and moment of inertia of the cellinoid are analyzed explicitly.  相似文献

The Asteroid Photometric Catalogue was used to redetermine the rotation periods of all asteroids with data in the catalogue. The quality of the period determinations was divided into five groups. The total number of asteroids studied were 710 and 225 of these were considered not to be observed enough to yield any rotation period (code 0). For 121 asteroids the uncertainty was several hours (code d) and for 180 the uncertainty was less than one hour (code c). Code a was used for asteroids with reliable pole determinations (47 asteroids) and code b was used for asteroids with very reliable synodic rotation periods (137 asteroids). Some statistic properties of the rotation periods of asteroids are presented.  相似文献

The main topic of this paper is to investigate the exchange of mass and angular momentum between a satellite or planetary system and its primary, and the effects of this exchange to axial rotations and satellite orbits. Various applications on the calculation of axial rotations, present and past satellite masses and orbits and other implications of the theory are presented.  相似文献

The rotation states of small asteroids and meteoroids are determined primarily by their collisions, gravitational torques due to the Sun and planets (in the case of close encounters), and internal dissipative effects (that relax the free-precession energy toward the fundamental state of principal-axis rotation). Rubincam has recently pointed out that thermal reemission on irregular-shaped bodies also results in a torque that may secularly change both the rotation rate and the orientation of the spin axis (the so-called YORP effect). Here we pursue investigation of this effect. Keeping the zero thermal-relaxation approximation of Rubincam and the assumption of the principal-axis rotation, we study the YORP effect both for precisely determined shapes of near-Earth asteroids and also for a large statistical sample of automatically generated shapes by the Gaussian-sphere technique of Muinonen. We find that the asymptotic state of the YORP evolution is characterized by an arbitrary value of the obliquity, with higher but nearly equal likelihood of 0°/180° and 90° states. At the adopted approximation, the most typical feature of this end state of the YORP evolution is secular deceleration of the rotation rate, which means that at some instant collisions will randomize the rotation state. In a minority of cases, the final state of the obliquity evolution leads to a permanent acceleration of the body's rotation, eventually resulting in rotational fission. The YORP-induced slow evolution may also play an important role in driving the rotation state of small asteroids toward the resonances between the forced precession due to the solar torque and perturbations of the orbital node and inclination. We find that for small Themis asteroids these resonances are isolated in the relevant range of frequencies, and the YORP evolving rotation may be either temporarily captured or rapidly jump across these resonances. In contrast, the possible values of the forced precession for small Flora asteroids may be resonant with clustered, nonisolated lines of the orbital perturbation. The individual rotation histories of small Flora asteroids may be thus very complicated and basically unpredictable. We comment on possible astronomical consequences of these results.  相似文献

The first photometric observations of the near-Earth asteroid 1998 ST49 and the main belt asteroids (13154) and (27529) are reported. The synodic rotation periods and amplitudes of the lightcurves are:
  • ? 2.3017 h, 0.11 mag for 1998 ST49;
  • ? 2.98502 h, 0.18 mag for (13154);
  • ? 4.1290 h, 0.51 mag for (27529).
  • The periods for the first two asteroids are unambiguous, while the period of 4.1570 h is not ruled out for the third asteroid. Despite fast rotations, none of the presented asteroids exhibited any sign of binarity. Lightcurves were obtained at Modra Observatory.  相似文献

    A model for the evolution of the mean rotation rate of asteroids arising from mutual collisions yields reasonable agreement with observed rotation rates. The mean rotation rate of large asteroids for which gravitational binding energy exceeds material strength should be constant with respect to size. Since collisional erosion of small asteroids is more rapid than collisional spin-up, the onset of increased mean rotation rate occurs at a considerably smaller radius than the size at which material strength begins to dominate gravitational binding energy. For strong igneous rock, increased rotation rates are not expected among bodies larger than a few kilometers. If there is a real trend toward more rapid rotation among asteroids of ≈1?km radius (Degewij and Gehrels, (1976). Bull. Amer. Astron. Soc.8, 459), then a substantial population of strong asteroids in that size range is implied by this model. The slower mean rotation rate of C-type asteroids than other types (paper I) implies a ratio of densities of ≈2:3 between those types, in the context of this model.  相似文献

    Stability of Surface Motion on a Rotating Ellipsoid   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
    The dynamical environment on the surface of a rotating, massive ellipsoid is studied, with applications to surface motion on an asteroid. The analysis is performed using a combination of classical dynamics and geometrical analysis. Due to the small sizes of most asteroids, their shapes tend to differ from the classical spheroids found for the planets. The tri-axial ellipsoid model provides a non-trivial approximation of the gravitational potential of an asteroid and is amenable to analytical computation. Using this model, we study some properties of motion on the surface of an asteroid. We find all the equilibrium points on the surface of a rotating ellipsoid and we show that the stability of these points is intimately tied to the conditions for a Jacobi or MacLaurin ellipsoid of equilibria. Using geometrical analysis we can define global constraints on motion as a function of shape, rotation rate, and density, we find that some asteroids should have accumulation of material at their ends, while others should have accumulation of surface material at their poles. This study has implications for motion of a rover on an asteroid, and for the distribution of natural material on asteroids, and for a spacecraft hovering over an asteroid.  相似文献

    We observed ten M- and X-class main-belt asteroids with the Arecibo Observatory's S-band (12.6 cm) radar. The X-class asteroids were targeted based on their albedos or other properties which suggested they might be M-class. This work brings the total number of main-belt M-class asteroids observed with radar to 14. We find that three of these asteroids have rotation rates significantly different from what was previously reported. Based on their high radar albedo, we find that only four of the fourteen—16 Psyche, 216 Kleopatra, 758 Mancunia, and 785 Zwetana—are almost certainly metallic. 129 Antigone has a moderately high radar albedo and we suggest it may be a CH/CB/Bencubbinite parent body. Three other asteroids, 97 Klotho, 224 Oceana, and 796 Sarita have radar albedos significantly higher than the average main belt asteroid and we cannot rule out a significant metal content for them. Five of our target asteroids, 16 Psyche, 129 Antigone, 135 Hertha, 758 Mancunia, and 785 Zwetana, show variations in their radar albedo with rotation. We can rule out shape and composition in most cases, leaving variations in thickness, porosity, or surface roughness of the regolith to be the most likely causes. With the exception of 129 Antigone, we find no hydrated M-class asteroids (W-class; Rivkin, A.S., Howell, E.S., Lebofsky, L.A., Clark, B.E., Britt, D.T., 2000. Icarus 145, 351-368) to have high radar albedos.  相似文献
