Stellar ultraviolet light near 1500 Å is attenuated in the Earth's upper atmosphere due to strong absorption in the Schumann-Runge continuum of molecular oxygen. The intensity of stars in the Schumann-Runge continuum region has been monitored by the University of Wisconsin stellar photometers aboard the OAO-2 satellite during occultation of the star by the Earth's atmosphere. These data have been used to determine the molecular oxygen number density profile at the occultation tangent point. The results of 14 stellar occultations obtained in low and middle latitudes are presented giving the night-time vertical number density profile of molecular oxygen in the 140–200 km region. In general, the measured molecular oxygen number density is about a factor of 2 lower than the number densities predicted by the CIRA 1965 model. Also, the number density at a given height appears to decrease with decreasing solar activity. Measurements taken at low latitudes during the August 1970 geomagnetic storm showed a decrease in the molecular oxygen number density at a given height several days after the peak of the storm followed by a slow recovery to pre-storm densities.  相似文献

Stellar ultraviolet light near 2500 Å is attenuated in the Earth's upper atmosphere due to strong absorption in the Hartley continuum of ozone. The intensity of stars in the Hartley continuum region has been monitored by the University of Wisconsin stellar photometers aboard the OAO-2 satellite during occultation of the star by the Earth's atmosphere. These data have been used to determine the ozone number density profile at the occultation tangent point. The results of approximately 12 stellar occultations, obtained in low latitudes, are presented, giving the nighttime vertical number density profile of ozone in the 60- to 100-km region. The nighttime ozone number density has a bulge in its vertical profile with a peak of 1 to 2×108 cm?3 at approximately 83 km and a minimum near 75 km. The shape of the bulge in the ozone number density profile shows considerable variability with no apparent seasonal or solar cycle change. The ozone profiles obtained during a geomagnetic storm showed little variation at low latitudes.  相似文献

The large-scale structure around the Ophiuchus cluster of galaxies in the vicinity of the Galactic Centre ( l =05, b =95, cz =8500 km s−1) is investigated on the basis of a galaxy survey and spectroscopic observations made for a 12°×17° area. The galaxy survey was performed using six ESO/SERC Sky Survey Atlas films, and 4021 galaxies were detected in total. Recession velocities were newly obtained for 179 galaxies to make the total number of galaxies in the survey area with known velocities 219.
In the distribution of bright galaxies, we identified seven new clumps of galaxies. Comparing the surface number density of bright galaxies with the Galactic extinction, which is estimated from the 100‐μm flux density in the IRAS Sky Survey Atlas, we demonstrate that the seven clumps are not spurious as a result of the inhomogeneity of the Galactic extinction. Among the seven clumps, two are found to be clusters and four to be groups on the basis of the histogram of recession velocities and the number of member galaxies. The Ophiuchus cluster, two newly identified clusters, and four groups are all concentrated at 9000 km s−1. Field galaxies are also distributed centred at 8500 km s−1. Hence field galaxies occupy a common three-dimensional region with galaxies in the clusters and groups, and altogether they form a large-scale structure of supercluster size. As opposed to the overdensity in the supercluster region, the mean number density of galaxies in the velocity range 0–5000 km s−1 is only 25 per cent of the mean number density of the Universe, comparable with the density of the well-known Böotes void. Hence this nearby three-dimensional region in Ophiuchus is a void of galaxies also.  相似文献

High-resolution photographs of the photospheric network taken in the Caii K 3933 Å line and at 4308 Å are analysed in order to study the variation, in latitude and over the sunspot cycle, of its density (the density is defined as the number of network elements - also called facular points - per surface unity). It appears that the density of the photospheric network is not distributed uniformly at the surface of the Sun: on September 1983, during the declining phase of the current activity cycle, it was weakened at both the low (equatorial) and high (polar) active latitudes, while it was tremendously enhanced toward the pole. The density at the equator is varying in antiphase to the sunspot number: it increases by a factor 3 or more from maximum to minimum of activity. As a quantum of magnetic flux is associated to each network element, density variations of the photospheric network express in fact variations of the quiet Sun magnetic flux. It thus results that the quiet Sun magnetic flux is not uniformly distributed in latitude and not constant over the solar cycle: it probably varies in antiphase to the flux in active regions. The variation over the solar cycle and the latitude distribution of photospheric network density are compared to those of X-ray bright points and ephemeral active regions: there are no clear correlations between these three kinds of magnetic features.  相似文献

The development of perturbations of number densities of ions and electrons during the recombination epoch is analysed. The equations for relative perturbations of ionization fractions were derived from the system of equations for accurate computation of the ionization history of the early Universe. It is shown that strong dependence of ionization and recombination rates on the density and temperature of plasma provides the significant deviations of amplitudes of ionization fractions relative to perturbations from those of baryon matter density adiabatic perturbations. Such deviations are most prominent for cosmological adiabatic perturbations of scales larger than the sound horizon at the recombination epoch. The amplitudes of relative perturbations of number densities of electrons and protons at the last scattering surface exceed by a factor of ≃5 the amplitude of the relative perturbation of baryons total number density: for helium ions this ratio reaches a value of ≃18. For subhorizon cosmological perturbations, these ratios appear to be essentially smaller and depend on oscillation phase at the moment of decoupling. These perturbations of number densities of ions and electrons at the recombination epoch do not contribute to the intrinsic plasma temperature fluctuations but cause the 'corrugation' of the last scattering surface in optical depth,  δ z dec/( z dec+ 1) ≈−δb/3  , at scales larger than the sound horizon. It may result in notable changes of pre-calculated values of the cosmic microwave background polarization pattern at several degrees of angular scales.  相似文献

We discuss the possibility of accurately estimating the source number density of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) using small-scale anisotropy in their arrival distribution. The arrival distribution has information on their source and source distribution. We calculate the propagation of UHE protons in a structured extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF) and simulate their arrival distribution at the Earth using our previously developed method. The source number density that can best reproduce observational results by Akeno Giant Air Shower Array is estimated at about 10−5 Mpc−3 in a simple source model. Despite having large uncertainties of about one order of magnitude, due to small number of observed events in current status, we find that more detection of UHECRs in the Auger era can sufficiently decrease this so that the source number density can be more robustly estimated. Two hundred event observation above 4 × 1019 eV in a hemisphere can discriminate between 10−5 and 10−6 Mpc−3. Number of events to discriminate between 10−4 and 10−5 Mpc−3 is dependent on EGMF strength. We also discuss the same in another source model in this paper.  相似文献

The dependence of the formation redshift of clusters of galaxies on the cosmological constant is discussed on the basis of recent measurements of gravitational masses and radii from X-ray astronomy techniques. For a flat CDM model with several different values of the cosmological constant, the cluster number density as a function of the redshift is calculated. Comparing the calculated number density at z − 0 with the observed value limits the spectrum parameter Γ to the range 0.15–0.32. We also show that if Γ and/or ΩΛ were larger, many more clusters of galaxies would have been formed at high redshifts.  相似文献

Several synchrotron spectra are computed for a hypothetical Saturnian radiation belt. A monoenergetic distribution of relativistic electrons is assumed to exist in a toroidal volume in a dipole magnetic field aligned with the rotation axis. When synchrotron emission is added to the thermal component implied by observations at wavelengths shorter than 50 cm, the upturn in the total emission spectrum can become gradual to quite sharp depending on the critical wavelength and the number density of radiating electrons. As an example, the ranges of magnetic field intensity, and electron energy and density are tabulated for an estimate of the nonthermal component at the longest decimetric wavelength observation. The present observations are insufficient to determine the critical wavelength; but, for several estimates of the magnetic field loading factor, the minimum surface magnetic field intensity and minimum electron number density are computed.  相似文献

The characteristics of spikes observed in the occultation light curves of β Scorpii by Jupiter are reviewed and discussed. Using a model in which the refractivity (density) gradients in the Jovian atmosphere are parallel to the local gravitational field, the spikes are shown to yield information about (i) the [He]/-[H2] ratio in the atmosphere, (ii) the fine scale density structure of the atmosphere and (iii) high-resolution images of the occulted stars. The spikes also serve as indicators for ray crossing. Observational limits are placed on the magnitude of horizontal refractivity gradients; these appear to be absent on scales of a few kilometers at altitudes corresponding to number densities less than 2 × 1014 cm?3. Spikes are produced by atmospheric density variations, perhaps due to atmospheric layers, density waves or turbulence. To discriminate among these possibilities, future occultation observations should be made from a number of observation sites at two or more wavelengths simultaneously with high time resolution techniques. Given a large telescope and suitable observing techniques, useful information about Jupiter's atmosphere can be obtained from future occultations of early-type stars as faint as V ~ + 6–7.  相似文献

The distribution of atomic hydrogen in the thermosphere and exosphere is computed taking into account the upward flow which balances the escape flux. Because of the upward flow the number-density gradient is much steeper than it would be in a static atmosphere. Attention is drawn to the fact that the ratio of the amount of hydrogen above the 100 or 110km levels to the amount of hydrogen above the 200 or 300 km levels is a sensitive measure of the temperature of the exosphere. The evidence on the absolute abundance of atomic hydrogen is examined. It is concluded that the number density at the 120km level is probably about 5 × 105/cm3. The Ly. absorption line at this level is beyond the linear part of the curve of growth.

Consideration is also given to the steady-state distributions of O+ and H+ ions. In the lower part of the exosphere the number density of O+ ions falls with increase in altitude (the associated scale height being twice that of the O atoms) and the number density of H+ ions rises at the same rate (as was first pointed out by Dungey). The altitude at which the number densities of O+ and H+ ions become equal is calculated on various assumptions regarding the temperature and hydrogen content of the exosphere. It is found to be about 1200 km when the temperature is 1250° K and the hydrogen content corresponds to the number density cited near the end of the preceding paragraph. The gradient of the predicted electrondensity distribution at several Earth radii is much less than that deduced from whistler studies.

The passage from charge transfer to diffusive equilibrium is discussed in an Appendix.  相似文献

Using the explicit form of the functions to describe the monopole and dipole spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, the exact expressions for the temperature dependences of the radiative and thermodynamic functions, such as the total radiation power per unit area, total energy density, number density of photons, Helmholtz free energy density, entropy density, heat capacity at constant volume, and pressure in the finite range of frequencies v 1vv 2 are obtained. Since the dependence of temperature upon the redshift z is known, the obtained expressions can be simply presented in z representation. Utilizing experimental data for the monopole and dipole spectra measured by the COBE FIRAS instrument in the 60–600 GHz frequency interval at the temperature T=2.72548 K, the values of the radiative and thermodynamic functions, as well as the radiation density constant a and the Stefan-Boltzmann constant σ are calculated. In the case of the dipole spectrum, the constants a and σ, and the radiative and thermodynamic properties of the CMB radiation are obtained using the mean amplitude T amp=3.358 mK. It is shown that the Doppler shift leads to a renormalization of the radiation density constant a, the Stefan-Boltzmann constant σ, and the corresponding constants for the thermodynamic functions. The expressions for new astrophysical parameters, such as the entropy density/Boltzmann constant, and number density of CMB photons are obtained. The radiative and thermodynamic properties of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation for the monopole and dipole spectra at redshift z≈1089 are calculated.  相似文献

Comparison is made between the run of number density of meteoroids from penetration detectors aboard Helios A (masses below 10?8 g) and Pioneer 10 (masses near and above 3 × 10?9 g), the source function of the zodiacal light deduced from photometric observations aboard Helios A and Pioneer 10, counts versus brightness of objects passing by Pioneer 10 from the Sisyphus experiment and the distribution of meteoroids deduced from radar and optical meteors at the Earth. The Sisyphus experiment on Pioneer 10 observed reflecting glints on meteoroids rather than the meteoroids themselves and the counting statistics refer not to the effective radii of the meteoroids but to the effective radii of curvature of the reflecting glints on the meteoroids. The penetration detectors appear to find some increase in number density toward the Sun and a flat distribution outward to 5.2 AU. The overall behavior of the zodiacal light is that the relative distribution over direction is unchanged while the source scattering function diminishes as the inverse 1.4 power of distance from the Sun. The fit to the brightness of the zodiacal light obtained from these statistics can be combined with the mass distribution results from the optical meteors to deduce a mean geometric albedo of meteoroids of 0.006 at 1 AU from the Sun. Combination of the space distribution from radar meteors with the scattering source function of the zodiacal light yields geometric albedos for meteoroids running from 0.07 at 0.1 AU, from the Sun through 0.006 at 1 AU down to about 0.0001 at 3.3 AU which may run flat thence outward. This result is imposed by the indicated modest increase in density of meteoroids very near the Sun, a minimum between the Sun and the Earth near 0.4 AU and rising density outward to somewhere beyond 3.3 AU which is very different from the inverse 1.4 power of the distance shown for scatterers (product of number density and albedo) by the zodiacal light. A check on the distribution at very large sizes is possible if a search is made for fireballs in Jupiter's atmosphere by the Mariner Jupiter Saturn 1977 television cameras during the two encounters with Jupiter in 1979. An easy detection of such activity would put the maximum in the meteoroid distribution out near Jupiter and lend further confirmation to the indicated drop in albedo.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the presence of a magnetic Prandtl number on the structure of an accretion flow with a bipolar outflow by focusing on the density structure. Two cold and hot classes are considered for accretion flows. According to the self-similar assumptions in the radial direction and boundary conditions as well, we solve the MHD equations along the θ-direction to obtain the density structure. In addition, we consider the results in two gas-pressure-dominated and radiation-pressure-dominated regions. The obtained results show that the existence of a magnetic prandtl number may lead to bump formation in hot accretion flows, which may have consequences for planet formation. Furthermore, some discontinuations in the density structure are seen at some regions resulting in the production of a gap in the case of cold accretion flows. The results of this work may be useful in the consideration of the Rossby wave instability in both classes of accretion flows.  相似文献

Using formula to describe the average spectrum of the extragalactic far infrared background (FIRB) radiation measured by the COBE FIRAS instrument in the 0.15–2.4 THz frequency interval at mean temperature T=18.5 K, the radiative and thermodynamic properties, such as the total emissivity, total radiation power per unit area, total energy density, number density of photons, Helmholtz free energy density, entropy density, heat capacity at constant volume, and pressure are calculated. The value for the total intensity received in the 0.15–2.4 THz frequency interval is equal to 13.6 nW?m?2?sr?1. This value is about 19.4 % of the total intensity expected from the energy released by stellar nucleosynthesis over cosmic history. The radiative and thermodynamic functions of the extragalactic far infrared background (FIRB) radiation are calculated at redshift z=1.5.  相似文献

We present a general analytical procedure for computing the number density of voids with radius above a given value within the context of gravitational formation of the large-scale structure of the Universe out of Gaussian initial conditions. To this end, we develop an accurate (under generally satisfied conditions) extension of the unconditional mass function to constrained environments, which allows us both to obtain the number density of collapsed objects of certain mass at any distance from the centre of the void, and to derive the number density of voids defined by collapsed objects. We have made detailed calculations for the spherically averaged mass density and halo number density profiles for particular voids. We also present a formal expression for the number density of voids defined by galaxies of a given type and luminosity. This expression contains the probability for a collapsed object of certain mass to host a galaxy of that type and luminosity (i.e. the conditional luminosity function) as a function of the environmental density. We propose a procedure to infer this function, which may provide useful clues as to the galaxy formation process, from the observed void densities.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze the physical properties of dark mottles in the chromospheric network using two‐dimensional spectroscopic observations in Hα obtained with the Göttingen Fabry‐Perot Spectrometer in the Vacuum Tower Telescope at the Observatory del Teide, Tenerife. Cloud modeling was applied to measure the mottles' optical thickness, source function, Doppler width, and line‐of‐sight velocity. Using these measurements, the number density of hydrogen atoms in levels 1 and 2, total particle density, electron density, temperature, gas pressure, and mass density parameters were determined with the method of Tsiropoula & Schmieder (1997). We also analyzed the temporal behaviour of a mottle using cloud parameters. Our result shows that it is dominated by 3 minute signals in source function, and 5 minutes or more in velocity (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The ambient photoelectron spectrum below 300 km has been studied for a sample of 500 AE-E orbits taken during the period 13 December 1975 to 24 February 1976. During this solar minimum period, the average and maximum Σ Kp were 19 and 35 respectively. The agreement between the measured spectral shape and several recent calculations is extremely good. The daytime photoelectron spectrum below 300 km from 1 to 100 eV is illustrated by a number of spectra. Detailed 0–32 eV spectra are presented at various altitudes and solar zenith angles. High resolution 10–32eV spectra show the widths of the photoelectron lines in the spectrum and the variation of the linewidth and intensity with altitude. Data from the entire 500 orbit sample are combined into plots of the average flux over a number of altitude ranges up to 300 km at various local times and solar zenith angles. The data show that the photoelectron flux below 300 km is remarkably constant (typical variation less than ±50%) over a period of several months. The photoelectron lines between 20 and 30 eV are extremely sharp when the total plasma density is low but broaden significantly at high altitudes as the plasma density builds up during the day. The N2 vibration-rotation excitation dip at 2.3 eV is strongest at the lowest altitudes and decreases with increasing altitude and plasma density. The absolute accuracy of the experiment is discussed in detail and a correction factor for previously published AE-E fluxes is given.  相似文献

We investigate the number density of maxima in the cosmological galaxy density field smoothed with a filter as a probe of clustering. In previous work it has been shown that this statistic is closely related to the slope of the linear power spectrum, even when the directly measured power spectrum is non-linear. In the present paper we investigate the sensitivity of the peak number density to various models with differing power spectra, including rolling index models, cosmologies with massive neutrinos and different baryon densities. We find that rolling index models which have given an improved fit to CMB/LSS (cosmic microwave background/large scale structure) data yield a ∼10 per cent difference in peak density compared to the scale invariant case. Models with 0.3 eV neutrinos have effects of similar magnitude and it should be possible to constrain them with data from current galaxy redshift surveys. Baryon oscillations in the power spectrum also give rise to distinctive features in the peak density. These are preserved without modification when measured from the peak density in fully non-linear N -body simulations. Using the simulations, we also investigate how the peak density is modified in the presence of redshift distortions. Redshift distortions cause a suppression of the number of peaks, largely due to fingers of God overlapping in redshift space. We find that this effect can be modelled by using a modification of the input power spectrum. We also study the results when the simulation density field is traced by galaxies obtained by populating haloes with a halo occupation distribution consistent with observations. The peak number density is consistent with that in the dark matter for filter scales  >4  h −1 Mpc  , for which we find good agreement with the linear theory predictions. In a companion paper we analyse data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey.  相似文献

The propagation and the head—on collision of nonlinear dust—acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) in dusty plasmas consisting of electrons, ions and negative as well as positive dust particles are investigated. Applying an extended Poincaré-Lighthill-Kuo (PLK) method, Kortwege-de Vries equations and analytical phase shifts after the head-on collision of two DASWs in dusty plasmas are obtained. Analytically and numerically, the relevance of the phase shifts and trajectories to the positive-to-negative dust number density ratio, the ratio of the ion number density to negative dust number density, negative-to-positive dust particle mass ratio, and the ion-to-electron temperature ratio effects is explicitly demonstrated. Moreover, the current findings are applied to different regions of space, viz. cometary tails, mesosphere, Jupiter’s magnetosphere.  相似文献

The rapid neutron capture process (r-process) is one of the major nucleosynthesis processes responsible for the synthesis of heavy nuclei beyond iron. Isotopes beyond Fe are most exclusively formed in neutron capture processes and more heavier ones are produced by the r-process. Approximately half of the heavy elements with mass number A > 70 and all of the actinides in the solar system are believed to have been produced in the r-process. We have studied the r-process in supernovae for the production of heavy elements beyond A = 40 with the newest mass values available. The supernova envelopes at a temperature >109 K and neutron density of 1024 cm?3 are considered to be one of the most potential sites for the r-process. The primary goal of the r-process calculations is to fit the global abundance curve for solar system r-process isotopes by varying time dependent parameters such as temperature and neutron density. This method aims at comparing the calculated abundances of the stable isotopes with observation. We have studied the r-process path corresponding to temperatures ranging from 1.0 × 109 K to 3.0 × 109 K and neutron density ranging from 1020 cm?3 to 1030 cm?3. With temperature and density conditions of 3.0 × 109 K and 1020 cm?3 a nucleus of mass 273 was theoretically found corresponding to atomic number 115. The elements obtained along the r-process path are compared with the observed data at all the above temperature and density range.  相似文献
