An explicit finite-difference method is employed to study the MHD free convection heat generating fluid past an impulsively started vertical infinite plate when a strong magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plate. The velocity and temperature profiles are shown on graphs and the results are discussed in terms of the non-dimensional parameters e (Hall parameter), i (ionslip parameter), (heat source parameter), and Gr (Grashof number).  相似文献

The behavior of Io’s atmosphere during and after eclipse is investigated on the basis of kinetic theory. The atmosphere is mainly composed of sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas, which condenses to or sublimates from the frost of SO2 on the surface depending on the variation of surface temperature (~90–114 K). The atmosphere may also contain a noncondensable gas, such as sulfur monoxide (SO) or oxygen (O2), as a minor component. In the present study, an accurate numerical analysis for a model Boltzmann equation by a finite-difference method is performed for a one-dimensional atmosphere, and the detailed structure of unsteady gas flows caused by the phase transition of SO2 is clarified. For instance, the following scenario is obtained. The condensation of SO2 on the surface, starting when eclipse begins, gives rise to a downward flow of the atmosphere. The falling atmosphere then bounces upward when colliding with the lower atmosphere but soon falls again. This process of falling and bounce back of the atmosphere repeats during the eclipse, resulting in a temporal oscillation of the macroscopic quantities, such as the velocity and temperature, at a fixed altitude. For a pure SO2 atmosphere, the amplitude of the oscillation is large because of a fast downward flow, but the oscillation decays rapidly. In contrast, for a mixture, the downward flow is slow because the noncondensable gas adjacent to the surface hinders the condensation of SO2. The oscillation in this case is weak but lasts much longer than in the case of pure SO2. The present paper is complementary to the work by Moore et al. (Moore, C.H., Goldstein, D.B., Varghese, P.L., Trafton, L.M., Stewart, B. [2009]. Icarus 201, 585–597) using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method.  相似文献

The structure, dynamical equilibrium, and evolution of Saturn’s moon Iapetus are studied. It has been shown that, in the current epoch, the oblateness of the satellite ε2 ≈ 0.046 does not correspond to its angular velocity of rotation, which causes the secular spherization behavior of the ice shell of Iapetus. To study this evolution, we apply a spheroidal model, containing a rock core and an ice shell with an external surface ε2, to Iapetus. The model is based on the equilibrium finite-difference equation of the Clairaut theory, while the model parameters are taken from observations. The mean radius of the rock core and the oblateness of its level surface, ε1 ≈ 0.028, were determined. It was found that Iapetus is covered with a thick ice shell, which is 56.6% of the mean radius of the figure. We analyze a role of the core in the evolution of the shape of a gravitating figure. It was determined that the rock core plays a key part in the settling of the ice masses of the equatorial bulge, which finally results in the formation of a large circular equatorial ridge on the surface of the satellite. From the known mean altitude of this ice ridge, it was found that, in the epoch of its formation, the rotation period of Iapetus was 166 times shorter than that at present, as little as T ≈ 11h27m. This is consistent with the fact that a driving force of the evolution of the satellite in our model was its substantial despinning. The model also predicts that the ice ridge should be formed more intensively in the leading (dark and, consequently, warmer) hemisphere of the satellite, where the ice is softer. This inference agrees with the observations: in the leading hemisphere of Iapetus, the ridge is actually high and continuous everywhere, while it degenerates into individual ice peaks in the opposite colder hemisphere.  相似文献

Martian magmas are thought to be rich in chlorine compared with their terrestrial counterparts. Here, we experimentally investigate the effect of chlorine on liquidus depression and near‐liquidus crystallization of olivine‐phyric shergottite NWA 6234 and compare these results with previous experimental results on the effect of chlorine on near‐liquidus crystallization of the surface basalts Humphrey and Fastball. Previous experimental results showed that the change in liquidus temperature is dependent on the bulk composition of the basalt. The effect of chlorine on liquidus depression is greater for lower SiO2 and higher Al2O3 magmas than for higher SiO2 and lower Al2O3 magmas. The bulk composition for this study has lower Al2O3 and higher FeO contents than previous work; therefore, we provide additional constraints on the effect of the bulk composition on the influence of chlorine on near‐liquidus crystallization. High pressure and temperature crystallization experiments were performed at 1 GPa on a synthetic basalt, of the bulk composition of NWA 6234, with 0–4 wt% Cl added to the sample as AgCl. The results are consistent with previous notions that with increasing wt% Cl in the melt, the crystallization temperature decreases. Importantly, our results have a liquidus depression ?T (°C) from added chlorine that is consistent with the difference in bulk composition and suggest a dependence on both the bulk Al2O3 and FeO content. Our results suggest that the addition of chlorine to the Martian mantle may lower magma genesis temperatures and potentially aid in the petrogenesis of Martian magmas.  相似文献

Spectra from the Voyager 1 IRIS experiment confirm the existence of enhanced infrared emission near Jupiter's north magnetic pole in March 1979. The spectral characteristics of the enhanced emission are consistent with a Planck source function. A temperature-pressure profile is derived for the region near the north magnetic pole, from which quantitative abundance estimates of minor species are made. Some species previously detected on Jupiter, including CH3D, C2H2 and C2H6, have been observed again near the pole. Newly discovered species, not previously observed on Jupiter, include C2H4, C3H4, and C6H6. All of these species except CH3D appear to have enhanced abundances at the north polar region with respect to midlatitudes. Upper limits are determined for C4H2 and C3H8. The quantitative results are compared with model calculations based on ultraviolet results from the IUE satellite. The plausibility of the C6H6 identification in discussed in terms of the literature on C2H2 polymerization. The relation of C6H6 to cuprene is also discussed.  相似文献

The effects of collision-induced absorption on the far infrared spectrum of Titan have been investigated. After a review of the procedure for the theoretical calculation of the N2 translation-rotational spectrum, new results for the temperature range of 70 to 120°K are reported. These are used as input data for a simple atmospheric model in order to compute the far infrared radiance, brightness temperature, and spectral limb function. This source of opacity alone is not capable of explaining the Voyager results. When the collision-induced methane is included, the results are in closer agreement in the range between 200 and 300 cm?1, suggesting that a more complete treatment of collision-induced absorption including particularly CH4N2, N2H2, and H2H2 results, may provide sufficient opacity to reduce or obviate the need for opacities due to clouds or aerosols in order to explain the observed spectra.  相似文献

We present infrared absorption studies on the effects of 50-100 keV Ar+ and 100 keV H+ ion irradiation of water ice films at 20-120 K. The results support the view that energetic ions can produce hydrogen peroxide on the surface of icy satellites and rings in the outer Solar System, and on ice mantles on interstellar grains. The ion energies are characteristic of magnetospheric ions at Jupiter, and therefore the results support the idea that radiolysis by ion impact is the source of the H2O2 detected on Europa by the Galileo infrared spectrometer. We found that Ar+ ions, used to mimic S+ impacts, are roughly as efficient as H+ ions in producing H2O2, and that 100 keV H+ ions can produce hydrogen peroxide at 120 K. The synthesized hydrogen peroxide remained stable while warming the ice film after irradiation; the column density of the formed H2O2 is constant until the ice film begins to desorb, but the concentration of H2O2 increases with time during desorption because the water sublimes at a faster rate. Comparing the shape of the 3.5-μm absorption feature of H2O2 to the one measured on Europa shows excellent agreement in both shape and position, further indicating that the H2O2 detected on Europa is likely caused by radiolysis of water ice.  相似文献

It has been suggested that inclusions of CO2 or CO2 clathrate hydrates may comprise a portion of the polar deposits on Mars. Here we present results from an experimental study in which CO2 molecules were trapped in water ice deposited from CO2/H2O atmospheres at temperatures relevant for the polar regions of Mars. Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor the phase of the condensed ice, and temperature programmed desorption was used to quantify the ratio of species in the generated ice films. Our results show that when H2O ice is deposited at 140-165 K, CO2 is trapped in large quantities, greater than expected based on lower temperature studies in amorphous ice. The trapping occurs at pressures well below the condensation point for pure CO2 ice, and therefore this mechanism may allow for CO2 deposition at the poles during warmer periods. The amount of trapped CO2 varied from 3% to 16% by mass at 160 K, depending on the substrate studied. Substrates studied were a tetrahydrofuran (C4H8O) base clathrate and Fe-montmorillonite clay, an analog for Mars soil. Experimental evidence indicates that the ice structures are likely CO2 clathrate hydrates. These results have implications for the CO2 content, overall composition, and density of the polar deposits on Mars.  相似文献

We use a dynamic finite-difference model to simulate martian landslides in the Valles Marineris canyon system and Olympus Mons aureole using three different modal rheologies: frictional, Bingham, and power law. The frictional and Bingham modes are applied individually. Fluidized rheology is treated as a combination of frictional and power-law modes; general fluidization can include pore pressure contributions, whereas acoustic fluidization does not. We find that general fluidization most often produces slides that best match landslide geometry in the Valles Marineris. This implies that some amount of supporting liquid or gas was present in the material during failure. The profile of the Olympus Mons aureole is not well matched by any landslide model, suggesting an alternative genesis. In contrast, acoustic fluidization produces the best match for a lunar slide, a result anticipated for dry crust with no overlying atmosphere. The presence of pressurized fluid during Valles Marineris landsliding may be due to liquid water beneath a thin cryosphere (<1-2 km) or flash sublimation of CO2.  相似文献

The effect of quasi-resonance energy transfer in collisions between H2 and H2O molecules in H2O maser sources is investigated. New data on the state-to-state rate coefficients for collisional transitions for H2O and H2 molecules are used in the calculations. The results of ortho-H2O level population inversion calculations for the 22.2-, 380-, 439-, and 621-GHz transitions are presented. The ortho-H2O level population inversion is shown to depend significantly on the population distribution of the para-H2 J = 0 and 2 rotational levels. The possibility of quasi-resonance energy transfer in collisions between H2 molecules at highly excited rotational-vibrational levels and H2O molecules is considered. The quasi-resonance energy transfer effect can play a significant role in pumping H2O masers in the central regions of active galactic nuclei and in star-forming regions.  相似文献

The Phoenix Lander landed on Mars on 25 May 2008. It has instruments on board to explore the geology and climate of subpolar Mars and to explore if life ever arose on Mars. Although the Phoenix mission is not a life detection mission per se, it will look for the presence of organic compounds and other evidence to support or discredit the notion of past or present life. The possibility of extant life on Mars has been raised by a reinterpretation of the Viking biology experiments [Houtkooper, J. M., Schulze-Makuch, D., 2007. A possible biogenic origin for hydrogen peroxide on Mars: the Viking results reinterpreted. International Journal of Astrobiology 6, 147-152]. The results of these experiments are in accordance with life based on a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide instead of water. The near-surface conditions on Mars would give an evolutionary advantage to organisms employing a mixture of H2O2 and H2O in their intracellular fluid: the mixture has a low freezing point, is hygroscopic and provides a source of oxygen. The H2O2-H2O hypothesis also explains the Viking results in a logically consistent way. With regard to its compatibility with cellular contents, H2O2 is used for a variety of purposes in terran biochemistry. The ability of the anticipated organisms to withstand low temperatures and the relatively high water vapor content of the atmosphere in the Martian arctic, means that Phoenix will land in an area not inimical to H2O2-H2O-based life. Phoenix has a suite of instruments which may be able to detect the signatures of such putative organisms.  相似文献

The combined measurement of dark matter interactions with different superheated liquids has recently been suggested as a cross-correlation technique in identifying WIMP candidates. We describe the fabrication of high concentration superheated droplet detectors based on the light nuclei liquids C3F8, C4F8, C4F10 and CCl2F2, and investigation of their irradiation response with respect to C2ClF5. The results are discussed in terms of the basic physics of superheated liquid response to particle interactions, as well as the necessary detector qualifications for application in dark matter search investigations. The possibility of heavier nuclei SDDs is explored using the light nuclei results as a basis, with CF3I provided as an example.  相似文献

We used chemical equilibrium calculations to model thermal outgassing of ordinary chondritic material as a function of temperature, pressure, and bulk composition and use our results to discuss outgassing on asteroids and the early Earth. The calculations include ∼1000 solids and gases of the elements Al, C, Ca, Cl, Co, Cr, F, Fe, H, K, Mg, Mn, N, Na, Ni, O, P, S, Si, and Ti. The major outgassed volatiles from ordinary chondritic material are CH4, H2, H2O, N2, and NH3 (the latter at conditions where hydrous minerals form). Contrary to widely held assumptions, CO is never the major C-bearing gas during ordinary chondrite metamorphism. The calculated oxygen fugacity (partial pressure) of ordinary chondritic material is close to that of the quartz-fayalite-iron (QFI) buffer. Our results are insensitive to variable total pressure, variable volatile element abundances, and kinetic inhibition of C and N dissolution in Fe metal. Our results predict that Earth's early atmosphere contained CH4, H2, H2O, N2, and NH3; similar to that used in Miller—Urey synthesis of organic compounds.  相似文献

The motion of a point mass in the J 2 problem has been generalized to that of a rigid body in a J 2 gravity field for new high-precision applications in the celestial mechanics and astrodynamics. Unlike the original J 2 problem, the gravitational orbit-rotation coupling of the rigid body is considered in the generalized problem. The existence and properties of both the classical and non-classical relative equilibria of the rigid body are investigated in more details in the present paper based on our previous results. We nondimensionalize the system by the characteristic time and length to make the study more general. Through the study, it is found that the classical relative equilibria can always exist in the real physical situation. Numerical results suggest that the non-classical relative equilibria only can exist in the case of a negative J 2, i.e., the central body is elongated; they cannot exist in the case of a positive J 2 when the central body is oblate. In the case of a negative J 2, the effect of the orbit-rotation coupling of the rigid body on the existence of the non-classical relative equilibria can be positive or negative, which depends on the values of J 2 and the angular velocity Ω e . The bifurcation from the classical relative equilibria, at which the non-classical relative equilibria appear, has been shown with different parameters of the system. Our results here have given more details of the relative equilibria than our previous paper, in which the existence conditions of the relative equilibria are derived and primarily studied. Our results have also extended the previous results on the relative equilibria of a rigid body in a central gravity field by taking into account the oblateness of the central body.  相似文献

Abstract. We have constructed a chemical reaction system in a contracting interstellar cloud. In paper (I) we have presented the details of the physical and chemical scheme and the method of solution. The results of our chemical model produce fractional abundances of H2CO, CO, OH, H2O, SO and OCS which are in good agreement with the results of observations. On the other hand, the results of chlorine-bearing species are not in agreement with those of the observations. The calculated abundances of H2CO, CO, OH, H2O, SO, OCS and Cl+ are in agreement with the results of previous theoretical studies.  相似文献

Atmospheric composition in the turbopause regime was determined by four rocket-borne mass spectrometers, which employed shock-freezing cryo-ion sources. Number densities of N2, O2, O, Ar and CO2 are presented for these experiments. The results are compared with those of other rocket experiments taken from the literature. Ar/N2 ratios are analyzed with respect to atmospheric turbulence. Magnitude and variability of atomic oxygen layer maximum density and layer content are discussed. Variations of O densities and simultaneous Ar/N2 ratio changes are compared. Six CO2 measurements are discussed in terms of CO2/N2 ratios.  相似文献

The effects of the production on dust grain surfaces of molecular hydrogen in excited states have been investigated. On the assumption that all of the H2 formed on the surface of grains has a sufficient level of excitation too vercome the energy barriers in the formation reactions for the important OH and CH+ radicals, we consider the likely abundances of excited H2 (H2 *), OH and CH+ in various situations. Two different models are employed; the first links the H2 * abundance directly to that of H2 using a steady-state approximation, whilst the second considers the time-dependence of H2 *. The second model is applied to gas that has been subjected to a strong isothermal shock (specifically, the shock-induced collapse of a diffuse cloud), which results in an extreme (high density, high atomic hydrogen abundance) environment. In general, it is found that the presence of the excited H2 has only marginal effects on the chemistry of interstellar clouds. However, in the isothermal shock model, the abundances of CH+ are significantly enhanced, but only on short timescales, whilst the effects on the OH abundances are smaller, but last longer. We conclude that other than in such exceptional environments there are no obvious chemical signatures of the formation of H2 *. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present X-ray fluorescence observations of the lunar surface, made by the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer during two solar flare events early in the mission (12th December 2008 and 10th January 2009). Modelling of the X-ray spectra with an abundance algorithm allows quantitative estimates of the MgO/SiO2 and Al2O3/SiO2 ratios to be made for the two regions, which are in mainly basaltic areas of the lunar nearside. One of these ground tracks includes the Apollo 14 landing site on the Fra Mauro Formation. Within the 1σ errors provided, the results are inside the range of basaltic samples from the Apollo and Luna collections. The Apollo 14 soil composition is in agreement with the results from the January flare at the 1σ uncertainty level. Discrepancies are observed between our results and compositions derived for the same areas by the Lunar Prospector gamma-ray spectrometer; some possible reasons for this are discussed.  相似文献

A multi-wavelength radio frequency observation of Venus was performed on April 5, 1996, with the Very Large Array to investigate potential variations in the vertical and horizontal distribution of temperature and the sulfur compounds sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfuric acid vapor (H2SO4(g)) in the atmosphere of the planet. Brightness temperature maps were produced which feature significantly darkened polar regions compared to the brighter low-latitude regions at both observed frequencies. This is the first time such polar features have been seen unambiguously in radio wavelength observations of Venus. The limb-darkening displayed in the maps helps to constrain the vertical profile of H2SO4(g), temperature, and to some degree SO2. The maps were interpreted by applying a retrieval algorithm to produce vertical profiles of temperature and abundance of H2SO4(g) given an assumed sub-cloud abundance of SO2. The results indicate a substantially higher abundance of H2SO4(g) at high latitudes (above 45°) than in the low-latitude regions. The retrieved temperature profiles are up to 25 K warmer than the profile obtained by the Pioneer Venus sounder probe at altitudes below 40 km (depending on location and assumed SO2 abundance). For 150 ppm of SO2, it is more consistent with the temperature profile obtained by Mariner 5, extrapolated to the surface via a dry adiabat. The profiles obtained for H2SO4(g) at high latitudes are consistent with those derived from the Magellan radio occultation experiments, peaking at around 8 ppm at an altitude of 46 km and decaying rapidly away from that altitude. At low latitudes, no significant H2SO4(g) is observed, regardless of the assumed SO2 content. This is well below that measured by Mariner 10 (Lipa and Tyler 1979, Icarus39, 192-208), which peaked at ∼14 ppm near 47 km. Our results favor ≤100 ppm of SO2 at low latitudes and ≤50 ppm in polar regions. The low-latitude value is statistically consistent with the results of Bézard et al. (1983, Geophs. Res. Lett.20, 1587-1590), who found that a sub-cloud SO2 abundance of 130±40 ppm best matched their observations in the near-IR. The retrieved temperature profile and higher abundance of H2SO4(g) in polar regions are consistent with a strong equatorial-to-polar, cloud-level flow due to a Hadley cell in the atmosphere of Venus.  相似文献

Radar scattering from the icy galilean satellites is marked by unusually high backscatter cross sections and polarization ratios at wavelengths λ0=3.5-70 cm. The persistence of exotic scattering behavior over this large a wavelength range suggests that the responsible mechanisms remain at least partially effective as the wavelength approaches or exceeds the size of individual scatterers. We examine two models previously analyzed in the geometrical optics limit—radar glory from buried craters (Eshleman, 1986, Science 234, 587-590) and refraction scattering from subsurface lenses (Hagfors et al., 1985, Nature 315, 637-640)—at wavelength scales using three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations. We include craters with rough walls and lenses with random inclusions of heterogeneous material. For hemispherical craters spanning up to 3λ0 in diameter, we observe none of the exotic backscatter behavior attributed to the geometrical optics models. Nonspherical refraction scatterers can produce circular polarization ratios μC>1 and linear polarization ratios μL=0.5-0.8 at diameters as small as ∼λ0, but the density of such inclusions must be high if refraction scattering alone is to account for the measured cross sections.  相似文献
