We present a Gaussianity analysis of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ( WMAP ) 5-yr cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropy data maps. We use several third-order estimators based on the spherical Mexican hat wavelet. We impose constraints on the local non-linear coupling parameter f nl using well-motivated non-Gaussian simulations. We analyse the WMAP maps at resolution of 6.9 arcmin for the Q , V , and W frequency bands. We use the KQ 75 mask recommended by the WMAP team which masks out 28 per cent of the sky. The wavelet coefficients are evaluated at 10 different scales from 6.9 to 150 arcmin. With these coefficients, we compute the third order estimators which are used to perform a  χ2  analysis. The  χ2  statistic is used to test the Gaussianity of the WMAP data as well as to constrain the f nl parameter. Our results indicate that the WMAP data are compatible with the Gaussian simulations, and the f nl parameter is constrained to  −8 < f nl < +111  at 95 per cent confidence level (CL) for the combined   V + W   map. This value has been corrected for the presence of undetected point sources, which add a positive contribution of  Δ f nl= 3 ± 5  in the   V + W   map. Our results are very similar to those obtained by the WMAP team using the bispectrum.  相似文献

We use the spherical evolution approximation to investigate non-linear evolution from the non-Gaussian initial conditions characteristic of the local f nl model. We provide an analytic formula for the non-linearly evolved probability distribution function (PDF) of the dark matter which shows that the underdense tail of the non-linear PDF in the f nl model should differ significantly from that for Gaussian initial conditions. Measurements of the underdense tail in numerical simulations may be affected by discreteness effects, and we use a Poisson counting model to describe this effect. Once this has been accounted, our model is in good quantitative agreement with the simulations. In principle, our calculation is an important first step in programs which seek to reconstruct the shape of the initial PDF from observations of large-scale structures in the Lyα forest and the galaxy distribution at later times.  相似文献

The formation of CO2 in the gas phase and on a polyaromatic hydrocarbon surface (coronene) via three possible pathways is investigated with density functional theory. Calculations show that the coronene surface catalyses the formation of CO2 on model grain surfaces. The addition of 3O to CO is activated by 2530 K in the gas phase. This barrier is lowered by 253 K for the Eley–Rideal mechanism and 952 K for the hot-atom mechanism on the surface of coronene. Alternative pathways for the formation of CO2 are the addition of 3O to the HCO radical, followed by dissociation of the HCO2 intermediate. The O + HCO addition is barrierless in the gas phase and on the surface and is more than sufficiently exothermic to subsequently cleave the H–C bond. The third mechanism, OH + CO addition followed by H removal from the energized HOCO intermediate, has a gas-phase exit barrier that is 1160 K lower than the entrance barrier. On the coronene surface, however, both barriers are almost equal. Because the HOCO intermediate can also be stabilized by energy dissipation to the surface, it is anticipated that for the surface reaction the adsorbed HOCO could be a long-lived intermediate. In this case, the stabilized HOCO intermediate could react, in a barrierless manner, with a hydrogen atom to form H2+ CO2, HCO2H, or H2O + CO.  相似文献

The formation of H2 on a pristine olivine surface [forsterite (010)] is investigated computationally. Calculations show that the forsterite surface catalyzes H2 formation by providing chemisorption sites for H atoms. The chemisorption route allows for stepwise release of the reaction exothermicity and stronger coupling to the surface, which increases the efficiency of energy dissipation. This suggests that H2 formed on a pristine olivine surface should be much less rovibrationally excited than H2 formed on a graphite surface. Gas-phase H atoms impinging on the surface will first physisorb relatively strongly  ( E phys= 1240 K)  . The H atom can then migrate via desorption and re-adsorption, with a barrier equal to the adsorption energy. The barrier for a physisorbed H atom to become chemisorbed is equal to the physisorption energy, therefore there is almost no gas-phase barrier to chemisorption. An impinging gas-phase H atom can easily chemisorb  ( E chem= 12 200 K)  , creating a defect where a silicate O atom is protonated and a single electron resides on the surface above the adjacent magnesium ion. This defect directs any subsequent impinging H atoms to chemisorb strongly (39 800 K) on the surface electron site. The two adjacent chemisorbed atoms can subsequently recombine to form H2 via a barrier (5610 K) that is lower than the chemisorption energy of the second H atom. Alternatively, the adsorbed surface species can react with another incoming H atom to yield H2 and regenerate the surface electron site. This double chemisorption 'relay mechanism' catalyzes H2 formation on the olivine surface and is expected to attenuate the rovibrational excitation of H2 thus formed.  相似文献

Solid CO2 is observed to be an abundant interstellar ice component towards both quiescent clouds and active star-forming regions. Our recent models of gas–grain chemistry, appropriate for quiescent regions, severely underproduce solid CO2 at the single assumed gas density and temperature. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of our model results to changes in these parameters. In addition, we examine how the nature of the grain surface affects the results and also consider the role of the key surface reaction between O and CO. We conclude that the observed high abundance of solid CO2 can be reproduced at reasonable temperatures and densities by models with diffusive surface chemistry, provided that the diffusion of heavy species such as O occurs efficiently.  相似文献

We present a general scheme for constructing Monte Carlo realizations of equilibrium, collisionless galaxy models with known distribution function (DF) f 0. Our method uses importance sampling to find the sampling DF f s that minimizes the mean-square formal errors in a given set of projections of the DF f 0. The result is a multimass N -body realization of the galaxy model in which 'interesting' regions of phase space are densely populated by lots of low-mass particles, increasing the effective N there, and less interesting regions by fewer, higher mass particles.
As a simple application, we consider the case of minimizing the shot noise in estimates of the acceleration field for an N -body model of a spherical Hernquist model. Models constructed using our scheme easily yield a factor of ∼100 reduction in the variance at the central acceleration field when compared to a traditional equal-mass model with the same number of particles. When evolving both models with a real N -body code, the diffusion coefficients in our model are reduced by a similar factor. Therefore, for certain types of problems, our scheme is a practical method for reducing the two-body relaxation effects, thereby bringing the N -body simulations closer to the collisionless ideal.  相似文献

We test the consistency of estimates of the non-linear coupling constant f NL using non-Gaussian cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps generated by the method described in the work of Liguori, Matarrese & Moscardini. This procedure to obtain non-Gaussian maps differs significantly from the method used in previous works on the estimation of f NL. Nevertheless, using spherical wavelets, we find results in very good agreement with Mukherjee & Wang, showing that the two ways of generating primordial non-Gaussian maps give equivalent results. Moreover, we introduce a new method for estimating the non-linear coupling constant from CMB observations by using the local curvature of the temperature fluctuation field. We present both Bayesian credible regions (assuming a flat prior) and proper (frequentist) confidence intervals on f NL, and discuss the relation between the two approaches. The Bayesian approach tends to yield lower error bars than the frequentist approach, suggesting that a careful analysis of the different interpretations is needed. Using this method, we estimate   f NL=−10+270−260  at the 2σ level (Bayesian) and   f NL=−10+310−270  (frequentist). Moreover, we find that the wavelet and the local curvature approaches, which provide similar error bars, yield approximately uncorrelated estimates of f NL and therefore, as advocated in the work of Cabella et al., the estimates may be combined to reduce the error bars. In this way, we obtain   f NL=−5 ± 85  and   f NL=−5 ± 175  at the 1σ and 2σ level respectively using the frequentist approach.  相似文献

We present the results of a spectroscopic multisite campaign for the β Cephei star 12 (DD) Lacertae. Our study is based on more than thousand high-resolution high S/N spectra gathered with eight different telescopes in a time span of 11 months. In addition, we make use of numerous archival spectroscopic measurements. We confirm 10 independent frequencies recently discovered from photometry, as well as harmonics and combination frequencies. In particular, the slowly pulsating B-stars (SPB)-like g -mode with frequency 0.3428 d−1 reported before is detected in our spectroscopy. We identify the four main modes as  (ℓ1, m 1) = (1, 1), (ℓ2, m 2) = (0, 0), (ℓ3, m 3) = (1, 0)  and  (ℓ4, m 4) = (2, 1)  for   f 1= 5.178 964 d−1, f 2= 5.334 224 d−1, f 3= 5.066 316 d−1  and   f 4= 5.490 133 d−1  , respectively. Our seismic modelling shows that f 2 is likely the radial first overtone and that the core overshooting parameter  αov  is lower than 0.4 local pressure scale heights.  相似文献

One of the methods discussed in deflecting the orbit of an Earth-colliding asteroid is the use of nuclear explosives. In assessing its feasibility, apart from political considerations, it is important to quantify how effective it is in orbit deflection. The transfer of radiation incident at the surface is governed by a non-linear diffusion equation. For low-yield explosions with a slab geometry ( S 0≃108 kJ μs−1), the temperature at depth x and time t is well approximated by a similarity solution of the form T ( x , t )= T 0 f (ξ), ξ= x/ ( T n 0 t )1/2, with T 0 given by ( S 0/σ)1/4, where σ is the Stefan–Boltzmann constant, n is an index that specifies the radiation transfer and f (ξ) is the solution of a non-linear differential equation subject to the condition f (0)=1 and limξ→∞ f (ξ)=0. For high-yield explosions ( S 0≃1010 kJ μs−1), numerical solutions to the non-linear diffusion equation can be obtained. These solutions have properties similar to the case of low-yield explosions. If the duration of the explosion is d ×10−8 s, where d is close to 3, the fraction of energy absorbed by the surface is found to be 7, 12 and 23 per cent for S 0=108, 109 and 1010 kJ μs−1 respectively.  相似文献

We review existing ROSAT detections of single Galactic Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars and develop wind models to interpret the X-ray emission. The ROSAT data, consisting of bandpass detections from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) and some pointed observations, exhibit no correlations of the WR X-ray luminosity ( L X) with any star or wind parameters of interest (e.g. bolometric luminosity, mass-loss rate or wind kinetic energy), although the dispersion in the measurements is quite large. The lack of correlation between X-ray luminosity and wind parameters among the WR stars is unlike that of their progenitors, the O stars, which show trends with such parameters. In this paper we seek to (i) test by how much the X-ray properties of the WR stars differ from the O stars and (ii) place limits on the temperature T X and filling factor f X of the X-ray-emitting gas in the WR winds. Adopting empirically derived relationships for T X and f X from O-star winds, the predicted X-ray emission from WR stars is much smaller than observed with ROSAT . Abandoning the T X relation from O stars, we maximize the cooling from a single-temperature hot gas to derive lower limits for the filling factors in WR winds. Although these filling factors are consistently found to be an order of magnitude greater than those for O stars, we find that the data are consistent (albeit the data are noisy) with a trend of in WR stars, as is also the case for O stars.  相似文献

We examine the effects of cooling flows on the T X– L Bol relation for a sample of the most X-ray luminous ( L Bol > 1045 erg s−1) clusters of galaxies known. Using high-quality ASCA X-ray spectra and ROSAT images we explicitly account for the effects of cooling flows on the X-ray properties of the clusters and show that this reduces the previously noted dispersion in the T X– L Bol relationship. More importantly, the slope of the relationship is flattened from L Bol ∝  T 3X to approximately L Bol ∝  T 2X, in agreement with recent theoretical models which include the effects of shocks and pre-heating on the X-ray gas. We find no evidence for evolution in the T X– L Bol relation within z  ∼ 0.3. Our results demonstrate that the effects of cooling flows must be accounted for before cosmological parameters can be determined from X-ray observations of clusters. The results presented here should provide a reliable basis for modelling the T X– L Bol relation at high X-ray luminosities.  相似文献

When the total angular momentum of a binary system   J tot= J orb+ J spin  is at a certain critical (minimum) value, a tidal instability occurs which eventually forces the stars to merge into a single, rapidly rotating object. The instability occurs when   J orb= 3 J spin  , which in the case of contact binaries corresponds to a minimum mass ratio   q min≈  0.071–0.078. The minimum mass ratio is obtained under the assumption that stellar radii are fixed and independent. This is not the case with contact binaries where, according to the Roche model, we have   R 2= R 2( R 1, a , q )  . By finding a new criterion for contact binaries, which arises from  d J tot= 0  , and assuming   k 21≠ k 22  for the component's dimensionless gyration radii, a theoretical lower limit   q min= 0.094–0.109  for overcontact degree   f = 0–1  is obtained.  相似文献

We present the results of a three-year Johnson V and Strömgren uvby H β photometric study of the δ Scuti star BR Cancri (BR Cnc). Our data sets consist of 1293 discrete differential magnitudes in Johnson V and yellow y filters, 883 in Strömgren v and 239 in ub filters. The Fourier analysis of the data suggests four pulsation frequencies for the variable: f 1=24.978, f 2=11.358, f 3=11.808 and f 4=27.914 cycle d−1. During the three observing years, the main frequency f 1 kept its V ( y ) amplitude constant at about 6 mmag but its v amplitude seems to be changing. Amplitude variations for all the three other frequencies are also claimed. The pulsation modes of the frequencies are discussed based on the colour data. Using uvbyβ data and calibrations in the literature, we derive the physical parameters for BR Cnc.  相似文献

The Cepheus A star-forming region has been investigated through a multiline H2S and SO2 survey at millimetre wavelengths. Large-scale maps and high-resolution line profiles reveal the occurrence of several outflows. Cep A East is associated with multiple mass-loss processes: in particular, we detect a 0.6-pc jet-like structure which shows for the first time that the Cep A East young stellar objects are driving a collimated outflow moving towards the south.
The observed outflows show different clumps associated with definitely different H2S/SO2 integrated emission ratios, indicating that the gas chemistry in Cepheus A has been altered by the passage of shocks. H2S appears to be more abundant than SO2 in high-velocity clumps, in agreement with chemical models. However, we also find quite small H2S linewidths, suggestive of regions where the evaporated H2S molecules had enough time to slow down but not to freeze out on to dust grains. Finally, comparison between the line profiles indicates that the excitation conditions increase with the velocity, as expected for a propagation of collimated bow shocks.  相似文献

We consider a situation where the density and peculiar velocities in real space are linear, and we calculate ξ s , the two-point correlation function in redshift space, incorporating all non-linear effects which arise as a consequence of the map from real to redshift space. Our result is non-perturbative and it includes the effects of possible multi-streaming in redshift space. We find that the deviations from the predictions of the linear redshift distortion analysis increase for the higher spherical harmonics of ξ s . While the deviations are insignificant for the monopole ξ 0, the hexadecapole ξ 4 exhibits large deviations from the linear predictions. For a COBE normalized     ,     cold dark matter (CDM) power spectrum, our results for ξ 4 deviate from the linear predictions by a factor of two on the scale of ∼10  h −1 Mpc. The deviations from the linear predictions depend separately on f (Ω) and b . This holds the possibility of removing the degeneracy that exists between these two parameters in the linear analysis of redshift surveys which yields only     .
We also show that the commonly used phenomenological model, where the non-linear redshift two-point correlation function is calculated by convolving the linear redshift correlation function with an isotropic pair velocity distribution function, is a limiting case of our result.  相似文献

We generate mock galaxy catalogues for a grid of different cosmologies, using rescaled N -body simulations in tandem with a semi-analytic model run using consistent parameters. Because we predict the galaxy bias, rather than fitting it as a nuisance parameter, we obtain an almost pure constraint on σ8 by comparing the projected two-point correlation function we obtain to that from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). A systematic error arises because different semi-analytic modelling assumptions allow us to fit the r -band luminosity function equally well. Combining our estimate of the error from this source with the statistical error, we find  σ8= 0.97 ± 0.06  . We obtain consistent results if we use galaxy samples with a different magnitude threshold, or if we select galaxies by b J-band rather than r -band luminosity and compare to data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). Our estimate for σ8 is higher than that obtained for other analyses of galaxy data alone, and we attempt to find the source of this difference. We note that in any case, galaxy clustering data provide a very stringent constraint on galaxy formation models.  相似文献

The neighbouring lines a 6D5/2– x 6Po3/2 (1272.617 Å) and a 6D5/2– w 2Po3/2 (1272.657 Å) have been observed in the UV spectrum of χ Lupi to be of comparable intensity. The latter, Δ S  = 2, transition would be expected to be very weak. The two upper states should display negligible mixing. We give a detailed, quantitative discussion of how the two upper states are in fact strongly mixed through their mixing with 3d6(3D)4p 4Po3/2, and hence we explain the relative strengths of the two UV lines.  相似文献

A multifrequency analysis of the SX Phoenicis star BL Camelopardalis is presented on the basis of new high-speed photometry, along with fitting a total of 136 maxima. BL Cam is a multiple periodic pulsator. We find f 0=25.5768, f 1=25.2982, f 2=25.8622, f 3=31.5912, f 4=25.1065, f 5=25.5147 and f 6=25.6188 cycle d−1 together with the harmonics 51.1513 and 76.7268 cycle d−1 and combination frequencies f 0+ f 1, f 0+ f 2 and f 0+ f 3. The new frequency solution represents the light curves of BL Cam quite well. The observed minus calculated (O-C) analysis indicates that the fundamental frequency is in good agreement with the results of Fourier analysis.  相似文献

We search for ongoing major dry mergers in a well-selected sample of local brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) from the C4 cluster catalogue. 18 out of 515 early-type BCGs with redshift between 0.03 and 0.12 are found to be in major dry mergers, which are selected as pairs (or triples) with r -band magnitude difference  δ m r < 1.5  and projected separation   r p < 30 kpc  , and showing signatures of interaction in the form of significant asymmetry in residual images. We find that the fraction of BCGs in major dry mergers increases with the richness of the clusters, consistent with the fact that richer clusters usually have more massive (or luminous) BCGs. We estimate that present-day early-type BCGs may have experienced on average  ∼0.6 ( t merge/0.3 Gyr)−1  major dry mergers and through this process increases their luminosity (mass) by 15 per cent  ( t merge/0.3 Gyr)−1 ( f mass/0.5)  on average since   z = 0.7  , where t merge is the merging time-scale and f mass is the mean mass fraction of companion galaxies added to the central ones. We also find that major dry mergers do not seem to elevate radio activities in BCGs. Our study shows that major dry mergers involving BCGs in clusters of galaxies are not rare in the local Universe, and they are an important channel for the formation and evolution of BCGs.  相似文献
