We present velocity constraints for the upper-mantle transition zones beneath Central Siberia based on observations of the 1982 RIFT Deep Seismic Sounding (DSS) profile. The data consist of seismic recordings of a nuclear explosion in north-western Siberia along a 2600 km long seismic profile extending from the Yamal Peninsula to Lake Baikal. We invert seismic data from the mantle transition zones using a non-linear inversion scheme using a genetic algorithm for optimization and the WKBJ method to compute the synthetic seismograms. A statistical error analysis using a graph-binning technique was performed to provide uncertainty values in the velocity models.
Our best model for the upper-mantle velocity discontinuity near 410 km depth has a two-stage velocity-gradient structure, with velocities increasing from 8.70–9.25 km s−1 over a depth range of 400–415 km, a gradient of 0.0433 s−1, and from 9.25–9.60 km s−1 over a depth range of 415–435 km, a gradient of 0.0175 s−1. This derived model is consistent with other seismological observations and mineral-physics models. The model for the velocity discontinuity near 660 km depth is simple, sharp and includes velocities increasing from 10.15 km s−1 at 655 km depth to 10.70 km s−1 at 660 km depth, a gradient of 0.055 s−1.  相似文献

A two ship refraction profile was undertaken on the Australian continental shelf during the Banda Sea geophysical program, carried out by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Geological Survey of Indonesia. S waves originating close to the sea bottom were observed to distances of up to 1150 km at an array of stations in northern Australia.
These observations are interpreted as implying S mantle velocities of 4.60 km s-1 from a depth of 45 km to a depth of 76 km and 4.72 km s-1 below a depth of 76 km.
Ratios of the P and S travel times (Vp/Vs) have been determined to be 1.74 in the crust rising to a value of greater than 1.79 below a velocity discontinuity at a depth of 200 km. It is inferred that this high value arises because the effect of temperature is greater for S than for P .
Using the data from this and other studies in the shield region of Northern Australia it has been found that the S travel times are significantly less than predicted by the Jeffreys—Bullen tables.  相似文献

Upper mantle shear structure of North America   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Summary. The waveforms and travel times of S and SS phases in the range 10°–60° have been used to derive upper mantle shear velocity structures for two distinct tectonic provinces in North America. Data from earthquakes on the East Pacific Rise recorded at stations in western North America were used to derive a tectonic upper mantle model. Events on the north-west coast of North America and earthquakes off the coast of Greenland provided the data to investigate the upper mantle under the Canadian shield. All branches from the triplications due to velocity jumps near 400 and 660 km were observed in both areas. Using synthetic seismograms to model these observations placed tight constraints on heterogeneity in the upper mantle and on the details of its structure. SS–S travel-time differences of 30 s along with consistent differences in waveforms between the two data sets require substantial heterogeneity to at least 350 km depth. Velocities in the upper 170 km of the shield are about 10 per cent higher than in the tectonic area. At 250 km depth the shield velocities are still greater by about 4.5 per cent and they gradually merge near 400 km. Below 400 km no evidence for heterogeneity was found. The two models both have first-order discontinuities of 4.5 per cent at 405 km and 7.5 per cent at 695 km. Both models also have lids with lower velocities beneath. In the western model the lid is very thin and of relatively low velocity. In the shield the lid is 170 km thick with very high elocity (4.78 km s-1); below it the velocity decreases to about 4.65 km s-1. Aside from these features the models are relatively smooth, the major difference between them being a larger gradient in the tectonic region from 200 to 400 km.  相似文献

Deep seismic soundings along Hirapur-Mandla profile, central India   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary. The crustal depth section along Hirapur-Mandla profile has been computed in two steps from Deep Seismic Sounding (DSS) data. The shallow section up to the crystalline basement is derived by inverting first arrival refraction travel times. The upper Vindhyan sediments (velocity 4.5 km s−1) have a maximum thickness of about 1.5 km at Bakshaho. The lower Vindhyan sediments (velocity 5.4 km s−1) were deposited north of Narmada-Son lineament between Katangi and Narsinghgarh in a graben developed in crystalline basement. The thickness of the lower Vindhyans increases from north to south towards Katangi and the depth to the basement reaches 5.5 km near Jabera. The depth to the Moho boundary varies from 39.5 km near Tikaria to 45 km at Narsinghgarh. The narrow block between Katangi and Jabalpur forms a horst feature which represents the Narmada-Son lineament forming the southern boundary of the Vindhyan basin. Two-dimensional ray tracing was performed generating travel time curves from various shot points which were matched with observed travel time data.  相似文献

Summary. The mid-crustal earthquake of 1973 March 9 (mb= 5.5, h ≤ 20 km) located 60 km south-west of Sydney, Australia, provides unambiguous evidence of contemporary thrust faulting in South-eastern Australia — a region of high heat flow and Cenozoic basaltic volcanism. Aftershock locations suggest a steeply dipping fault in the depth range from 8 to 24 km with a lateral extent of about 8 km. The mechanism solution is consistent with a tectonic stress field that is dominated by east—west horizontal compression. A seismic moment of 5.7 ± 1023± 20 per cent dyne-cm was computed from surface-wave amplitudes. Minimum values of slip and stress drop, 2 cm and 1 bar respectively, were estimated from the moment and a fault size taken' from aftershock locations.
Refinement modelling by a controlled Monte Carlo technique was used to provide unbiased models directly from multimode group velocities. The dispersion of fundamental and higher mode surface waves recorded at the digital high-gain station at Charters Towers, Queensland, and the WWSSN station at Adelaide, South Australia, is satisfied by crust- and upper-mantle models which have neither pronounced S-wave low-velocity zones nor thick high-velocity lids within 140 km of the Earth's surface. These models have subcrustal shear velocities of 4.20–4.32 km/s which are 0.4–0.5 km/s slower than Canadian shield shear velocities (CANSD).  相似文献

Shear-wave polarization anisotropy in the Pacific Basin   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary. Inversion of 295. Love- and Rayleigh-wave phase travel times across the Pacific Basin has yielded a structure which has a channel that is anisotropic with respect to the polarization of shear waves. The velocity of SH waves is approximately 4.24 km/s, and the velocity of SV waves is approximately 4.10 km/s in the low-velocity channel. The lid to the channel is isotropic with respect to the polarization of S waves and the velocity is approximately 4.60 km/s. The lid to the low-velocity channel increases in thickness with lithospheric age at the expense of the channel, and its thickness is apparently still increasing at a sea-floor age of 150 Myr.
These results can be explained in terms of a model with both randomly-and preferentially-oriented, liquid-filled cracks in the channel. In the model, it is assumed that the liquid-filled cracks are due to partial melting in the channel, and that any preferred orientation is caused by a shear-flow gradient resulting from differential motion between the lid and the deeper parts of the mantle.  相似文献

Summary. An inversion of ISC travel-time data from selected earthquakes in the distance range 30°-90° to 53 stations in Central Europe has been used to model velocity down to 600 km depth. The model explains 0.1–0.2s of the residuals, as for other array studies, leaving 0.5 s unexplained as noise. The uppermost 100 km of the mantle and crust contains inhomogeneities that correlate remarkably well with the geology. This may be due to deep-seated thermal anomalies or, in some areas, to delays introduced by passage of the rays through sedimentary cover. The deeper anomalies are smaller and unrelated to those in the lithosphere, which suggests that the asthenosphere is decoupled from the rigid lithosphere. The structure at 600 km depth is again quite inhomogeneous and might be due to undulations of the 650 km discontinuity. The models show some suggestion of a high velocity slab trending from east to west beneath the Alps.  相似文献

Summary. A two-ship refraction profile was fired on the Australian continental shelf during the Banda Sea geophysical programme carried out by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Geological Survey of Indonesia. Some of the 55-kg shots fired during this profile were observed at an array of stations in northern Australia to a distance of 1150 km.
The first arrival P travel times at the land stations had apparent velocities of 6.52, 8.24 and 8.48 km/s. The observed travel times correspond closely with those for other stable continental platform or shield regions. The travel times in these regions are of the order of 6 s less than those given in the Jeffreys—Bullen tables at distances of 700 to 1150 km.
The observations are interpreted as implying an upper-mantle velocity of 8.4 km/s at a depth of about 75 km.  相似文献

Summary. We present evidence for a seismic discontinuity near 200km depth (the Lehmann Discontinuity) under the passive continental margin of northwest Australia, where continental lithosphere merges into oceanic lithosphere. The velocity contrast across the discontinuity is 0.2–0.3 km s-1, and is similar to the contrast across discontinuities at similar depths in seismic models for purely continental paths to the east under central Australia. The discontinuity has been shown to be present under continents, oceans and now at continental margins, and is probably a worldwide feature.  相似文献

Crust and upper mantle structure of the central Iberian Meseta (Spain)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary. Quarry blasts recorded along three lines on the central Iberian Meseta are used in an attempt to interpret the crustal structure. The results of the interpretation of the data, together with published surface wave and earthquake data, suggest a layered structure of the crust having the following features: the basement, in some areas covered by up to 4 km of sediments, has a P -velocity of 6.1 km s−1; a low-velocity layer, between 7 and 11 km depth, seems to exist on the basis of both P and S interpretation of seismic data; a thick middle crust of 12 km has a P -velocity of 6.4 km s−1 and overlies a lower crust with a mean P -velocity of 6.9 km s−1 and a possible slight negative gradient; the mean v p/ v s ratio for the crust is about 1.75; the Moho is reached at about 31 km depth and consists of a transition zone at least 1.5 km thick. The P -velocity of the upper mantle is close to 8.1 km s−1 and the S -velocity about 4.5 km s−1, which gives a v p /v s ratio of 1.8 for the uppermost mantle. A tentative petrological interpretation of the velocities and composition of the layers is given.

Seismic anisotropy within the uppermost mantle of southern Germany   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents an updated interpretation of seismic anisotropy within the uppermost mantle of southern Germany. The dense network of reversed and crossing refraction profiles in this area made it possible to observe almost 900 traveltimes of the Pn phase that could be effectively used in a time-term analysis to determine horizontal velocity distribution immediately below the Moho. For 12 crossing profiles, amplitude ratios of the Pn phase compared to the dominant crustal phase were utilized to resolve azimuthally dependent velocity gradients with depth. A P -wave anisotropy of 3–4 per cent in a horizontal plane immediately below the Moho at a depth of 30 km, increasing to 11 per cent at a depth of 40 km, was determined. For the axis of the highest velocity of about 8.03 km s−1 at a depth of 30 km a direction of N31°F was obtained. The azimuthal dependence of the observed Pn amplitude is explained by an azimuth-dependent sub-Moho velocity gradient decreasing from 0.06 s−1 in the fast direction to 0 s−1 in the slow direction of horizontal P -wave velocity. From the seismic results in this study a petrological model suggesting a change of modal composition and percentage of oriented olivine with depth was derived.  相似文献

Seismic velocity structure of the San Francisco Bay region crust is derived using measurements of finite-frequency traveltimes. A total of 57 801 relative traveltimes are measured by cross-correlation over the frequency range 0.5–1.5 Hz. From these are derived 4862 'summary' traveltimes, which are used to derive 3-D P -wave velocity structure over a 341 × 140 km2 area from the surface to 25 km depth. The seismic tomography is based on sensitivity kernels calculated on a spherically symmetric reference model. Robust elements of the derived P -wave velocity structure are: a pronounced velocity contrast across the San Andreas fault in the south Bay region (west side faster); a moderate velocity contrast across the Hayward fault (west side faster); moderately low velocity crust around the Quien Sabe volcanic field and the Sacramento River delta; very low velocity crust around Lake Berryessa. These features are generally explicable with surface rock types being extrapolated to depth ∼10 km in the upper crust. Generally high mid-lower crust velocity and high inferred Poisson's ratio suggest a mafic lower crust.  相似文献

Summary. A large set of published great circle Rayleigh wave phase velocities in the period range 125–350s is used to compare three recent tectonic models (Okal, Lévêque, Jordan). Prior to any regionalization, the symmetry property of the great circle integrals is used to obtain a lower limit of the signal/noise ratio in the data. It turns out that the signal is responsible for at least 30 per cent of the data variance in the period range 175–300s.
A standard regression method is applied for computing the'pure path'velocities and the model efficiency is derived from a variance analysis. It is shown that, even at great depth, none of the three models explains more than 60 per cent of the energy due to the long-wavelength lateral heterogeneities (λ6500 km).
The three models have nearly the same efficiency for explaining the short-period data ( T ∼ 125s). Between 200 and 300s, the higher performance of Okal's model indicates that it is important to separate the subduction zones from the other orogenic zones. By perturbing the lateral extension of the subduction zones, it comes out that they constitute on both sides of the subducting slabs wider anomalies than often assumed, suggesting large downgoing flows. On the contrary, the effect of surface features such as marginal seas are restricted to a close region in front of the trenches.
Finally, the anomalous ellipticity values deduced directly from great circle data are partly explained by a coupling between tectonics and ellipticity.  相似文献

We image the Hikurangi subduction zone using receiver functions derived from teleseismic earthquakes. Migrated receiver functions show a northwest dipping low shear wave feature down to 60 km depth, which we associate with the crust of the subducted Pacific Plate. Receiver functions (RF) at several stations also show a pair of negative and positive polarity phases with associated conversion depths of ∼20–26 km, where the subducted Pacific Plate is at a depth of ∼40–50 km beneath the overlying Australian Plate. RF inversion solutions model these phases with a thin low S -wave velocity zone less than 4 km thick, and an S -wave velocity contrast of more than ∼0.5 km s−1 with the overlying crust. We interpret this phase pair as representing fluids near the base of the lower crust of the Australian Plate, directly overlying the forearc mantle wedge.  相似文献

A crustal seismic velocity model for the UK, Ireland and surrounding seas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A regional model of the 3-D variation in seismic P -wave velocity structure in the crust of NW Europe has been compiled from wide-angle reflection/refraction profiles. Along each 2-D profile a velocity–depth function has been digitised at 5 km intervals. These 1-D velocity functions were mapped into three dimensions using ordinary kriging with weights determined to minimise the difference between digitised and interpolated values. An analysis of variograms of the digitised data suggested a radial isotropic weighting scheme was most appropriate. Horizontal dimensions of the model cells are optimised at 40 × 40 km and the vertical dimension at 1 km. The resulting model provides a higher resolution image of the 3-D variation in seismic velocity structure of the UK, Ireland and surrounding areas than existing models. The construction of the model through kriging allows the uncertainty in the velocity structure to be assessed. This uncertainty indicates the high density of data required to confidently interpolate the crustal velocity structure, and shows that for this region the velocity is poorly constrained for large areas away from the input data.  相似文献

We present a 3-D radially anisotropic S velocity model of the whole mantle (SAW642AN), obtained using a large three component surface and body waveform data set and an iterative inversion for structure and source parameters based on Non-linear Asymptotic Coupling Theory (NACT). The model is parametrized in level 4 spherical splines, which have a spacing of ∼ 8°. The model shows a link between mantle flow and anisotropy in a variety of depth ranges. In the uppermost mantle, we confirm observations of regions with   VSH > VSV   starting at ∼80 km under oceanic regions and ∼200 km under stable continental lithosphere, suggesting horizontal flow beneath the lithosphere. We also observe a   VSV > VSH   signature at ∼150–300 km depth beneath major ridge systems with amplitude correlated with spreading rate for fast-spreading segments. In the transition zone (400–700 km depth), regions of subducted slab material are associated with   VSV > VSH   , while the ridge signal decreases. While the mid-mantle has lower amplitude anisotropy (<1 per cent), we also confirm the observation of radially symmetric   VSH > VSV   in the lowermost 300 km, which appears to be a robust conclusion, despite an error in our previous paper which has been corrected here. The 3-D deviations from this signature are associated with the large-scale low-velocity superplumes under the central Pacific and Africa, suggesting that   VSH > VSV   is generated in the predominant horizontal flow of a mechanical boundary layer, with a change in signature related to transition to upwelling at the superplumes.  相似文献

Summary. Four seismic refraction profiles have been interpreted which serve to indicate the structure of the lithosphere near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge close to the Azores. An east–west profile which crosses the ridge axis yields a crustal structure. Although energy is propagated across the ridge axis within the crust the axial region marks a clear barrier to propagation within the mantle. A profile parallel to the axis (4 my isochron) shows, below a 7.6 km/s layer, a low-velocity zone underlain by an 8.3 km/s refractor 9 km below the sea bed. On profies normal to the ridge axis higher velocities, which are observed on lines shot towards the ridge, can be attributed to this refractor if it has a dip of several degrees away from the ridge. On another profile parallel to the axis (9 my isochron) a velocity of about 8.3 km/s is only found to exist much deeper at about 30 km depth. These observations are interpreted in the light of seismic refraction results recently obtained by Lewis & Snydsman and of quantitative petrological models, such as that of Bottinga & Allègre. A velocity model based on Bottinga & Allègre's model allows us to understand our results qualitatively. In particular the two 8.3 km/s refractors at 9 and 30 km depth correspond to two different residual peridotite layers. The upper layer contains 1.5–2 wt per cent water and as the lithosphere moves away from the ridge axis the temperature in this layer becomes low enough to start hydration reactions. These cause the low-velocity zone observed at 4 my and the total disappearance of the shallow level refractor before 9 my.  相似文献

20 magnetotelluric (MT) soundings were collected on the Isle of Skye, Scotland to provide a high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) electrical resistivity model of a volcanic province within the framework of a project jointly interpreting gravity, seismic, geological and MT data. The full 3-D inversion of the MT data jointly interpreted with gravity data reveals upper crustal structure. The main features of the model are interpreted in conjunction with previous geological mapping and borehole data. Our model extends to 13 km depth, several kilometres below the top of the Lewisian basement. The top of the Lewisian basement is at approximately 7–8 km depth and the topography of its surface was controlled by Precambrian rifting, during which a 4.5 km thick sequence of Torridonian sediments was deposited. The Mesozoic sediments above, which can reach up to 2.2 km thick, have small-scale depocentres and are covered by up to 600 m of Tertiary lava flows. The interpretation of the resistivity model shows that 3-D MT inversion is an appropriate tool to image sedimentary structures beneath extrusive basalt units, where conventional seismic reflection methods may fail.  相似文献
