The radio emission of a selected number of solar active regions has been investigated with high angular resolution at two frequencies: 10 and 17 GHz. By comparing the results of the two observations the following conclusions can be drawn:
  1. The brightness temperature distribution of an active region is often composed of very bright cores of small dimension (angular extent θ?20″) imbedded in extended halos of lower brightness.
  2. The radio emission of such structures as well as the degree of polarization can be explained with a thermal process. The halos can originate by pure thermal bremsstrahlung while in the case of the very bright cores found at 10 GHz (brightness temperature T b?1–9 × 106K) the emission at the harmonics of the gyrofrequency is needed.

A dynamical, homogeneous model of the chromosphere-corona transition region and of the lower corona is presented, based on the hydrodynamical equations and on a semi-empirical relation deduced from radio observations. The model is shown to be in agreement with radio and UV observations and with the particle flux given by solar wind measurements. A comparison with the analogous static model shows that dynamical effects are very small. From the model it is possible to give an estimate of the energy dissipated at each level by the waves that propagate in the solar atmosphere. It is shown that this energy source cannot be neglected with comparison to the usual conductive, convective and radiative sources. The importance of the kinetic energy flux connected with the spicules is also discussed.  相似文献

Hale region 16898 was observed by the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope at 6 cm and by the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter and the X-Ray Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Optical pictures of the same active region were taken at Sacramento Peak, Big Bear, and Meudon Observatories. The radio emission mechanisms are identified by comparing radio data with ultraviolet and soft X-ray data. The height of the radio sources and the magnetic field strength at that height are deduced. A radio source above a large sunspot shows a crescent shaped depression of circular polarization and a high brightness temperature. The emission mechanism is identified as gyroresonance at the second and the third harmonic layers and it is found that the second harmonic layer, where the magnetic field strength is 900 G, must be in the corona. An extended loop-like source connecting the leading and the following part of the active region as well as the sources associated with small spots are mainly due to thermal free-free emission by hot and dense plasma which is also observed in ultraviolet and soft X-ray radiation. The calculated radio brightness temperature, using the physical parameters deduced from the ultraviolet and soft X-ray line intensities, agrees with the observed brightness temperature. The height of the low brightness temperature sources above the small spots is 6000 ± 3000 km and that above the large spot is less than 3000 km: the source above the large spot does not show any shift relative to the sunspot due to the projection effect. Very strong radio emission was found which was associated with the merging of a group of small spots into the large sunspot. In the same day, warm ( 106 K) and dense matter was present above the large spot. Evidence for nonthermal emission is presented.  相似文献

A slowly evolving, flaring loop was observed by the UVSP, XRP, and HXIS instruments onboard SMM on June 10, 1980. Simultaneous radio observations from Toyokawa (Japan) are also available. The SMM instruments have an angular resolution ranging from 3 to 30 arc sec by which the loop structure may be determined. It appears that these observations cannot be accounted for by a single loop model even assuming a variable temperature and pressure. The additional presence of a hot and tenuous isothermal plasma is necessary to explain the harder emission (HXIS). X-ray and UV data are used to fit the differential emission measure as a function of temperature and a model of the flare is deduced, which is then checked against radio data. An estimate of the heating function along the loop and of the total energy content of the loop is also given.  相似文献

Based on the observations of the EUV spectroheliograms, the effective chromosphere-corona transition region is assumed to be restricted in a small volume element in the boundaries of the supergranular network. The center-to-limb variation of the quiet Sun at cm and dm wavelengths is analyzed to determine where the transition region is located in the network boundaries. Expressions are derived for the theoretical center-to-limb variation of the hypothetical brightness temperature only from the transition region, taking into account the orientation of the spicules. Comparison with the observations shows that the spicule-sheath model (Brueckner and Nicolas, 1973) and the hot plagette model (Foukal, 1974) are not compatible with the observations, because the limb brightening predicted by these models is too great. A new picture is therefore proposed that thin platelet transition regions are placed on top of the chromosphere and scattered between the network boundaries (the platelet transition-region model). This model is in accord with the observed center-to-limb variation of the radio emission.  相似文献

The brightness temperature distributions of the solar atmosphere in the polar region at the distances from one to two solar radii during the solar activity minimum are reported. Observations of the maximum phase of the solar eclipse of March 29, 2006 were carried out simultaneously on two sectors of the RATAN-600 radio telescope over a wide range of centimeter waves, 1–31 cm. This study is based on a comparison of models and observations carried out on the northeastern sector of the RATAN-600.  相似文献

In the paper it is investigated how the non-Maxwellian electron velocity distribution function associated with steep temperature gradient affects the cyclotron radio emission at centimeter wavelengths. The results obtained were used to calculate the distribution of the brightness temperature across a sunspot. The presence of the large electron temperature gradient in the transition region may lead to a significant increase of the observed brightness temperature (up to several tens of percent) in comparison with the brightness temperature obtained by assumption of the Maxwellian distribution function.  相似文献

Very low values of the radio brightness temperature of the rings of Saturn indicate that their high refar reflectivity is not simply due to a gain effect in the backscattering direction. These two sets of observations are consistent with the ring particles having a very high single scattering albedo at radio wavelenghts, with multiple scattering effects being important. Comparison of scattering calculations for ice and silicate particles with the radio and radar observations imply a mean particle radius of ~1 cm. The ice bands observed in the rings' near-infrared reflectivity spectra are formed by scattering within a microstructure on the surface of the ring particles, with the scattering centers being 25–125 μm in size. The Poynting-Robertson effect has caused a significant spiraling-in of the ring particles, probably resulting in a broadening of the rings. The inferred mean size is consistent with a model in which meteoroid impacts have caused a substantial reduction in the mean particle size from its initial value.  相似文献

The experimental results of a previous paper (Raoult et al., 1979) are used to discuss the interpretation of the depression in brightness temperature associated with prominences observed on the disk at centimetric and millimetric wavelengths. It is shown that the UV observations of the prominence-corona transition region are in agreement with the radio data. This is one of the arguments to locate the origin of the radio depression in the prominence-corona transition region rather than in the coronal cavity above filaments. Millimetric observations of filaments give further constraints on prominence core physical conditions, not fulfilled in the presently available models.  相似文献

We assume that the physical conditions above an active solar region vary continuously from the centers of sunspots to the adjacent quiet region and try to take into account the influence of the magnetic field. Thus we calculate the three-dimensional distribution of the electron temperature and density based on the radio spectrum of active region No. 75 obtained from the solar eclipse observation of 16 February, 1980. If we assume a potential field, we calculated the magnetic field above the active region in terms of the solar photospheric magnetic field.Using the electron temperature, density, and the magnetic field as described above, and assuming the slowly varying radiation mechanism to consist of bremsstrahlung and gyro-resonance radiation, we obtained the flux density spectrum and the brightness temperature spectrum. The calculated results are essentially consistent with the observations.  相似文献

It is possible for large particles of NH3 ice to explain two phenomena associated with observations of thermal infrared emission from the atmosphere of Saturn: (1) the depression of thermal brightness near the equator, which is coincident with a visibly bright zone-like region, and (2) some disagreements between infrared and radio occultation results. Particles of NH3 ice can provide the requisite opacity to explain the contrast between the equatorial region and the brighter area near 15°S for Pioneer Saturn Infrared Radiometer 45-μm channel data. NH3 ice particle clouds can also reconcile the 45-μm brightness of both regions (near the equator and near 15°S) with the mean temperatures structure of the Voyager 2 radio occultation results. A cloud model with ice particles distributed in equal ratio with gas particles up to the 100-mbar pressure level best fits the equatorial data; a thinner cloud or one which does not extend higher than the 400-mbar limit of the convective region best matches data for the 15°S region. At 20 μm, however, the radio occultation temperature structure predicts brightnesses which are lower than those observed for both regions, and it could indicate the possibility that another source of opacity which is latitudinally variable exists in the stratosphere.  相似文献

We discuss the possibility of a discovery of current sheets by using their screening and emissive properties in the radio band. It is shown that the presence of a current sheet in the solar atmosphere leads to a depression of the radio brightness at some wavelengths and to its enhancement at shorter wavelengths. Spectral observations with sufficient angular resolution may give such characteristics of the sheet as its temperature, electron density, thickness and height in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

On the basis of multifrequency solar radio observations made on RATAN–600 radiotelescope with high spatial resolution at nine wavelengths in the 2–32–wavelength range is shown that filaments and cavities are well detected on the solar scans at short centimeter wavelengths as the regions of low radio brightness with angular dimensions of 25′–80′ in E—W direction. The tendency of decreasing radio sizes for cavities and filaments from 2.0 to 8.0 cm is observed. The coronal hole (CH) is more contrast in the range of 8–32 cm. The radio size of CH in E—N direction increases from 2′ (at 8.2) to 5′.0 (at 31.6 cm). The spectra of the brightness temperature of CH and the quiet Sun are obtained. The brightness temperature of CH is twice lower than that of the quiet Sun at wavelength of 31.6 cm.  相似文献

High sensitivity observations of radio halos in galaxy clusters at frequencies ν ≤ 330 MHz are still relatively rare, and very little is known compared to the classical 1.4 GHz images. The few radio halos imaged down to 150–240 MHz show a considerable spread in size, morphology and spectral properties. All clusters belonging to the GMRT Radio Halo Survey with detected or candidate cluster-scale diffuse emission have been imaged at 325 MHz with the GMRT. Few of them were also observed with the GMRT at 240 MHz and 150 MHz. For A 1682, imaging is particularly challenging due to the presence of strong and extended radio galaxies at the center. Our data analysis suggests that thew radio galaxies are superposed to very low surface brightness radio emission extended on the cluster scale, which we present here.  相似文献

We present ROSAT PSPC observations of the twin-jet radio galaxy 3C 449. The soft X-ray emission from this object is dominated by an extended halo with a scale comparable to that of the radio source. The asymmetry of the X-ray emission is reflected in that of the radio lobes, providing evidence that the behaviour of the jets is strongly influenced by the external medium. A region of reduced X-ray surface brightness coincident with the southern radio lobe of 3C 449 suggests that the radio source has displaced thermal plasma from the X-ray-emitting halo. However, the minimum pressure in the radio lobe is considerably lower than our estimates of the pressure in the external medium. We discuss the implications for the dynamics of the radio source.  相似文献

The problem of predicting the radio emission from the quiet Sun for meter and decameter waves may be formulated in terms of a standard radiative transfer problem with conservative scattering. One may therefore avoid the numerical complications involved in using a ray-tracing approach which incorporates a Monte-Carlo routine for representing scattering. The brightness and extent of the radio Sun are calculated for several values of the electron temperature and scattering parameter of Steinberg et al. (1971). It is concluded that the temperature and density model of Newkirk (1967) for solar maximum reasonably represents the observations. However, some observations appear to be inconsistent with scattering models and further observations are needed. It is shown (in Appendix B) that the standard ray-tracing technique incorporating a Monte-Carlo routine for the scattering may be replaced by a diffusion approximation.  相似文献

We present 2.7-mm interferometric observations of Saturn made near opposition in June 1984 and June 1985, when the ring opening angle was 19° and 23°, respectively. By combining the data sets we produce brightness maps of Saturn and its rings with a resolution of 6″. The maps show flux from the ring ansae, and are the first direct evidence of ring flux in the 3-mm wavelength region. Modelfits to the visibility data yield a disk brightness temperature of 156 ± 5°K, a combined A, B, and C ring brightness temperature of 19 ± 3°K, and a combined a ring cusp (region of the rings which block the planet's disk) brightness temperature of 85 ± 5°K. These results imply a normal-to-the-ring optical depth for the combined ABC ringof 0.31 ± 0.04, which is nearly the same value found for wavelenghts from the UV to 6 cm. About 6°K of the ring flux is attributed to scattered planetary emission, leaving an intrinsic thermal component of ∼13°K. These results, together with the ring particle size distributions found by the Voyager radio occultation experiments, are consistent with the idea that the ring particles are composed chiefly of water ice.  相似文献

It is shown that the combined use of radio observations of the quiet Sun and UV line intensities allows to compute the absolute coronal abundance of the elements. The abundances found by this method agree very well with the most recent determinations. A model of the transition region and corona in hydrostatic equilibrium is also presented. Similarities and differences with models based on UV observations are discussed.  相似文献

NGC 1365
Summary. The aim of the present review is to give a global picture of the supergiant barred galaxy NGC 1365. This galaxy with its strong bar and prominent spiral structure displays a variety of nuclear activity and ongoing star formation. The kinematics of the galaxy has been mapped in detail by optical long slit and Fabry–Perot observations as well as radio observations of Hi and CO interstellar lines. From these observations a combined velocity field has been derived, describing the circulation of interstellar gas in the symmetry plane of the galaxy. With a gravitational potential based on near infrared photometry of the bar and the shape of the apparent rotation curve, computer simulations of the dynamics of the interstellar gas have been made with the aim to reproduce both the morphology of the interstellar matter as well as the observed velocity field. The simulations demonstrate the role of the bar and the importance of resonances between the bar rotation and the rotation of the galaxy for the formation of the spiral structure. Polarization of radio radiation reveals magnetic fields concentrated to the dust lanes along and across the bar, where they are aligned with the flow pattern of the gas, and along the spiral arms. The kinematics of the outer region of the galaxy with a fairly unique decline of the rotation curve leads to the conclusion that NGC 1365 lacks a very massive dark matter halo, which may permit the formation of a very strong bar. The galaxy contains an active nucleus with both broad and narrow components of the permitted spectral emission lines. The nucleus is surrounded by a molecular torus, numerous star forming regions and continuum radio sources. The star forming regions are, as seen with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), resolved into a large number of super star clusters suggested to be young globular clusters. A very compact radio source, seen at high spatial resolution with the Very Large Array (VLA), has been claimed to coincide with one of the super star clusters. This compact source has a radio brightness of the order of 100 times that of the bright galactic supernova remnant Cas A and is suggested to be a so called ‘radio supernova’. Two other such compact radio sources, positioned in the prominent dark dust lane penetrating the nuclear region, are identified as strong infrared sources by observations with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The cause of this infrared radiation may be dust heated by the objects that drive the radio sources. The X-ray radiation from the nucleus is interpreted to consist of hard continuum radiation from the active nucleus itself, Fe-K line emission from a rotating disk, and thermal emission from the surrounding star burst activity. A secondary, highly variable source has been discovered close to the nuclear region. It seems to be one of the most luminous and most highly variable off-nuclear X-ray sources known. The higher excitation optical emission lines in the nuclear region, primarily from [Oiii], reveal a velocity field quite different from that described by the galactic rotation. The deviating [Oiii] morphology and velocity field in the nuclear region is interpreted in terms of a high excitation outflow double-cone with its apex at the nucleus and symmetry axis perpendicular to the symmetry plane of the galaxy. One of the circumnuclear radio sources seems to be a one-sided jet emerging from the nucleus aligned with the cone axis. According to the model, the outward flow within the cone is accelerated and the flow velocity highest at the cone axis. Received 15 January 1999  相似文献
