It is shown that the lack of linear polarization in the microwave radiation of solar bursts (reported in a earlier paper) may be explained by spatial dispersion of Faraday rotation. The maximum source diameter s without noticeable destruction of linear polarization is determined by the electron density and the magnetic field strength in the volume, where the linear polarization is generated. In the case where linear polarization is produced by the radiation source, s is smaller than only 20 km. In the other case where linear polarization is produced by mode coupling in a quasi-transverse magnetic field in the corona, the s-values are found to range from 10 to 6000 km, which is still much smaller than the generally adopted sizes of microwave burst sources. The second case has been investigated for several models of magnetic fields.  相似文献

A new radio spectropolarimeter for solar radio observation has been developed at Tohoku University and installed on the Iitate Planetary Radio Telescope (IPRT) at the Iitate observatory in Fukushima prefecture, Japan. This system, named AMATERAS (the Assembly of Metric-band Aperture TElescope and Real-time Analysis System), enables us to observe solar radio bursts in the frequency range between 150 and 500 MHz. The minimum detectable flux in the observation frequency range is less than 0.7 SFU with an integration time of 10 ms and a bandwidth of 61 kHz. Both left and right polarization components are simultaneously observed in this system. These specifications are accomplished by combining the large aperture of IPRT with a high-speed digital receiver. Observational data are calibrated and archived soon after the daily observation. The database is available online. The high-sensitivity observational data with the high time and frequency resolutions from AMATERAS will be used to analyze spectral fine structures of solar radio bursts.  相似文献

We show that it is possible to account for the polarization features of solar radio emission provided the linear mode coupling theory is properly applied and the presence of current sheets in the corona is taken into account. We present a schematic model, including a current sheet that can explain the polarization features of both the low frequency slowly varying component and the bipolar noise storm radiation; the two radiations face similar propagation conditions through a current sheet and hence display similar polarization behavior. We discuss the applications of the linear mode coupling theory to the following types of solar radio emission: the slowly varying component, the microwave radio bursts, metric type U bursts, and bipolar noise storms.  相似文献

The Haleakala Stokes polarimeter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

A versatile Stokes polarimeter for solar observations has been developed at the University of Hawaii. Recent improvements to the instrument include a high-resolution echelle spectrometer coupled to the telescope by optical fibers, and 128-element diode array detectors. The on-axis design of the telescope and polarimeter limit instrumental polarization to 10–4, and the spectrometer detector combination provides spectral resolving power of 160000 for any wavelength between 4000 and 11000 Å. This paper describes the Haleakala polarimeter and in particular the spectrometer with its fiber-optic coupling. Examples of Stokes line profiles observed in a sunspot are presented, together with derived vector magnetic field maps.  相似文献

The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) onboard Hinode aims to obtain vector magnetic fields on the Sun through precise spectropolarimetry of solar spectral lines with a spatial resolution of 0.2 – 0.3 arcsec. A photometric accuracy of 10−3 is achieved and, after the polarization calibration, any artificial polarization from crosstalk among Stokes parameters is required to be suppressed below the level of the statistical noise over the SOT’s field of view. This goal was achieved by the highly optimized design of the SOT as a polarimeter, extensive analyses and testing of optical elements, and an end-to-end calibration test of the entire system. In this paper we review both the approach adopted to realize the high-precision polarimeter of the SOT and its final polarization characteristics.  相似文献

The passage of McMath plage region 8818 over the visible solar disk resulted in extensive meter-wavelength activity of spectral types I, II, III and IV. The activity at 74 MHz and its polarization have been observed with a narrow-band (10 kHz) timesharing radio polarimeter. Newly adopted data recording and processing techniques have enabled time-histories of the polarization characteristics of the solar emission to be obtained with a time resolution of 1/4 second. The polarization patterns for all the major activity in the May 18–26 period are described. They exhibit considerable variety in the degree and ellipticity of the polarization observed during both short-lived bursts and long-enduring periods of activity. Both simple and complex patterns were seen when changes in the sense of polarization of the solar emission occurred. Methods used to determine the polarization characteristics of the solar emission in the presence of galactic emission and to resolve the complexities of the solar emission itself are illustrated.  相似文献

An explicit equation of the propagational angle of microwave emission between the line-of-sight and the local magnetic field is newly derived based on the approximated formulae of nonthermal gyrosynchrotron emission (Dulk and Marsh in Astrophys. J. 259, 350, 1982). The existence of the solution of propagational angle is clearly shown under a series of typical parameters in solar microwave observations. It could be used to determine the intrinsic mode and linear mode coupling in solar microwave bursts by three steps. (1) The mode coupling may happen only when the angle approximately equals to 90 degrees, i.e., when the emission propagates through the quasi-transverse region (Cohen in Astrophys. J. 131, 664, 1960). (2) The inversion of polarization sense due to the weakly mode coupling takes place only when the transition frequency defined by Cohen (1960) is larger than the frequency of microwave emission, and an observable criterion of the weakly mode coupling in flaring loops was indicated by the same polarization sense in the two footpoints of a flaring loop (Melrose and Robinson in Proc. Astron. Soc. Aust. 11, 16, 1994). (3) Finally, the intrinsic mode of microwave emission is determined by the observed polarization and the calculated direction of local magnetic field according to the general plasma dispersion relation, together with the mode coupling process. However, a 180-degree ambiguity still exists in the direction of longitudinal magnetic field, to produce an uncertainty of the intrinsic mode. One example is selected to check the feasibility of the method in the 2001 September 25 event with a loop-like structure nearby the central meridian passage observed by Nobeyama Radio Heliograph and Polarimeters. The calculated angle in one footpoint (FP) varied around 90° in two time intervals of the maximum phase, which gives a direct evidence of the emission propagating through a quasi-transverse region where the linear mode coupling took place, while, the angle in another FP was always smaller than 90° where the mode coupling did not happen. Moreover, the right-circular sense at 17 GHz was always observed in both two FPs during the event, which supports that the transition frequency should be larger than 17 GHz in the first FP together with strong magnetic field of over 2000 Gauses in photosphere, where the weakly coupled case should happen. Moreover, there are two possibilities of the intrinsic mode in the two FPs due to the 180-degree ambiguity. (1) The emission of extraordinary (X) mode from the first FP turns to the ordinary (O) mode in the two time intervals of the maximum phase, while, the X-mode is always emitted from the second FP. (2) The inversion from O-mode to X-mode takes place in the first FP, while the O-mode keeps in the second FP. If the magnetic polarities in photosphere and corona are coincident in this event, the intrinsic mode belongs to the second case.  相似文献

The Ku-band polarization identifier (KUPID) will integrate a very low noise 12–18 GHz, correlation polarimeter onto the Crawford Hill seven meter, millimeter-wave antenna. The primary components of the polarimeter will be built at the University of Miami and other key components, including the microwave horn and data acquisition system will be built at the University of Chicago and Princeton University. This project will measure the Q and U Stokes parameters in regions near the north celestial pole, in regions of low galactic contamination, and in regions near the galactic plane. The KUPID survey experiment makes use of many of the techniques employed in the Princeton IQU experiment (PIQUE) that was developed by the members of this collaboration to detect CMB polarization at shorter wavelengths. The KUPID experiment will be constructed in parallel and on the same timescale as the CAPMAP experiment (see Barkats, this volume) which is the follow-on experiment to PIQUE. KUPID will observe on the Crawford Hill antenna from late spring until early autumn, while CAPMAP will observe during the lower water vapor months of late autumn until early spring.  相似文献

We present statistics relating shock-associated (SA) kilometric bursts (Cane et al., 1981) to solar metric type II bursts. An SA burst is defined here to be any 1980 kHz emission temporally associated with a reported metric type II burst and not temporally associated with a reported metric type III burst. In this way we extend to lower flux densities and shorter durations the original SA concept of Cane et al. About one quarter of 316 metric type II bursts were not accompanied by any 1980 kHz emission, another quarter were accompanied by emission attributable to preceding or simultaneous type III bursts, and nearly half were associated with SA bursts. We have compared the time profiles of 32 SA bursts with Culgoora Observatory dynamic spectral records of metric type II bursts and find that the SA emission is associated with the most intense and structured part of the metric type II burst. On the other hand, the generally poor correlation found between SA burst profiles and Sagamore Hill Observatory 606 and 2695 MHz flux density profiles suggests that most SA emission is not due to energetic electrons escaping from the microwave emission region. These results support the interpretation that SA bursts are the long wavelength extension of type II burst herringbone emission, which is presumed due to the shock acceleration of electrons. Also: Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, U.S.A.  相似文献

An analysis of solar radio bursts with temporal fine structure (TFS) at 5730 MHz in relation to the magnetic configuration of the corresponding active regions (AR) is presented. We found that the occurrence of TFS bursts increases with increasing complexity of the AR's magnetic configuration. The degree of polarization of TFS bursts varies over a wide range. Most of these fast bursts with a high degree of polarization were observed in active regions with a simple magnetic configuration β. Most of the unpolarized fast bursts were observed in active regions with the most complicated configuration βγδ. Because bursts that are polarized in different modes have different displacements of position with respect to that of associated microwave bursts, we conclude that there are at least two types of TFS bursts at 5730 MHz. We think that fast bursts that are polarized in the ordinary mode are due to microwave type III bursts.  相似文献

Design of the Polarimeter for the Fibre Arrayed Solar Optical Telescope   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The theoretical design of the polarimeter used for the Fibre Arrayed Solar Optical Telescope (FASOT) is described. It has the following characteris- tics: (1) It is provided with the function of optical polarization switching, which makes the high-effciency polarimetry possible; (2) In the waveband of 750 nm, the polarimetric effciency is higher than 50% for the every Stokes parameter, and higher than 86.6% for the total polarization, thus an observer can make the simultaneous polarization measurements on multiple magnetosensitive lines in such a broad range of wavelength; (3) According to the selected photospheric and chromospheric lines, the measurement can be focused on either linear polarization or circular polarization; (4) The polarimeter has a loose tolerance on the manufacturing technology of polarimetric elements and installation errors. All this makes this polarimeter become a high-performance polarimetric device.  相似文献

An unusual solar burst was observed simultaneously by two decameter radio telescopes UTR-2 (Kharkov, Ukraine) and URAN-2 (Poltava, Ukraine) on 3 June 2011 in the frequency range of 16?–?28 MHz. The observed radio burst had some unusual properties, which are not typical for the other types of solar radio bursts. Its frequency drift rate was positive (about 500 kHz?s?1) at frequencies higher than 22 MHz and negative (100 kHz?s?1) at lower frequencies. The full duration of this event varied from 50 s up to 80 s, depending on the frequency. The maximum radio flux of the unusual burst reached ≈103 s.f.u. and its polarization did not exceed 10 %. This burst had a fine frequency-time structure of unusual appearance. It consisted of stripes with the frequency bandwidth 300?–?400 kHz. We consider that several accompanied radio and optical events observed by SOHO and STEREO spacecraft were possibly associated with the reported radio burst. A model that may interpret the observed unusual solar radio burst is proposed.  相似文献

We present the results of studying the impact linear polarization of 32 solar flares of X-ray classes C, M, and X (two flares) observed with the Large Solar Vacuum Telescope. It has turned out that there is evidence for impact polarization only in 13 of them. The newly obtained data have confirmed that the linear Stokes parameters are predominantly 2–7%, while the spatial sizes of flaring points with nonzero Stokes parameters are small (1″-2″). Two features of the manifestation of impact polarization in flares revealed by these studies are of greatest interest: (1) at the two foot points of a single flare loop or an arcade of loops, both the Hα intensity profiles and the Stokes profiles differ in behavior; (2) based on the Hα line, we have found for the first time that the sign of the Stokes parameters changes not only across the flare ribbon but also with depth of the chromosphere.  相似文献

A Stokes polarimeter has been built at the High Altitude Observatory to obtain line profiles in both linear and circular polarization in solar spectral lines. These measurements are interpreted using the theory of radiative transfer in the presence of a magnetic field to obtain vector magnetic fields on the solar disk and using the theory of resonance scattering and the Hanle effect to obtain vector magnetic fields in prominences. The polarimeter operates on the Sacramento Peak Observatory 40 cm coronagraph. It is an extensively modified and improved version of an earlier instrument.Polarization modulation is achieved by two KD*P Pockels cells at the coronagraph prime focus and demodulation is by a microprocessor. The instrument control and data handling is done by a minicomputer. Silicon photodiode 128 element line array detectors have replaced the two photomultipliers used on the earlier instrument. This gives a speed increase of a factor of 50.A polarization scrambler provides a chop to a reference beam of unpolarized light by time scrambling the polarization of the solar beam. This device improves sensitivity to polarizations less than 0.01%. The polarization measurements are photon noise limited in most cases. This noise is 0.1% for a typical three second observation which is about one gauss on the longitudinal field and 10 gauss on the transverse field. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by The National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Type IV radio bursts with wide band from microwave to metric-wave frequency are generally associated with solar proton flares. Recently, Castelli et al. (1967, 1968) have shown that the type IV radio bursts associated with solar proton flares show the U-shaped peak flux spectra with the minimum flux at decimetric frequencies. In this paper, the center-to-limb variation of such peak flux spectra is investigated in order to examine the effect of decrease of the peak flux at metric frequencies with increase of the angular distance from the central meridian of the Sun. It is shown that the U-shaped spectra are obtained independent of the position of proton flares, although the spectral form changes significantly in the case of the flares near the limb. It is further suggested that the U-shaped spectra consist of the two essentially independent components for microwave and metric-wave frequencies, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper we summarize and analyze the results of observation of linear polarization of H α emission for solar flares and moustaches obtained earlier. Basic structural and evolutional properties of the observed polarization are formulated and presented. A conclusion is drawn that polarization data obtained from rough time and spatial averaging of Stokes parameters distort the true picture of polarization of H α emission in flares and moustaches.  相似文献

The first results of the experiment with the SPR-N hard X-ray (20–100 keV) polarimeter onboard the Coronas-F observatory (the experiment started on August 15, 2001) are presented. Hard X-ray radiation was detected from several solar flares. The spectral and temporal parameters were determined and the polarization was estimated. Comparison with the GOES observations of thermal X-ray radiation shows that hard X-ray bursts occur at the growth phase of the thermal radiation and that they are associated with the bremsstrahlung of energetic electrons precipitating into the solar atmosphere.  相似文献
