Mass loading and chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols over the Arabian Sea during the pre-monsoon months of April and May have been studied as a part of the Integrated Campaign for Aerosols, gases and Radiation Budget (ICARB). These investigations show large spatial variabilities in total aerosol mass loading as well as that of individual chemical species. The mass loading is found to vary between 3.5 and 69.2 μg m?3, with higher loadings near the eastern and northern parts of Arabian Sea, which decreases steadily to reach its minimum value in the mid Arabian Sea. The decrease in mass loading from the coast of India towards west is estimated to have a linear gradient of 1.53 μg m?3/° longitude and an e?1 scale distance of ~2300 km. SO 4 2? , Cl? and Na+ are found to be the major ionic species present. Apart from these, other dominating watersoluble components of aerosols are NO 3 ? (17%) and Ca2+ (6%). Over the marine environment of Arabian Sea, the non-sea-salt component dominates accounting to ~76% of the total aerosol mass. The spatial variations of the various ions are examined in the light of prevailing meteorological conditions and airmass back trajectories.  相似文献

Collocated measurements of the optical and physical properties of columnar and near-surface aerosols were carried out from Manora Peak, Nainital (a sparsely inhabited, high altitude location, ~2 km above mean sea level, in the Himalayas), during the Integrated Campaign for Aerosols, gases and Radiation Budget (ICARB) under the Geosphere Biosphere Programme of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO-GBP). Under this, observational data of spectral aerosol optical depths (AOD), mass concentration of aerosol black carbon (M B ), mass concentration (M T ) and number concentration (N t ) of composite (total) aerosols near the surface and meteorological parameters were collected during the period February 15 to April 30, 2006. Though very low (<0.1 at 500 nm) AODs were observed during clear days, as much as a four-fold increase was seen on hazy days. The Ångström exponent (α), deduced from the spectral AODs, revealed high values during clear days, while on hazy days α was low; with an overall mean value of 0.69 ± 0.06 for the campaign period. BC mass concentration varied between 0.36 and 2.87 μg m?3 and contributed in the range 0.7 to 1.8% to the total aerosol mass. Total aerosol number concentration and BC mass concentration showed diurnal variation with a midnight and early morning minimum and a late afternoon maximum; a pattern quite opposite to that seen in low altitude stations. These are attributed to the dynamics of the atmospheric boundary layer.  相似文献

It is shown that the approximation of the complex, tidally distorted shape of a star as a circular disc with local line profiles and a linear limb-darkening law, which is usually applied when deriving equatorial stellar rotation velocities from line profiles, leads to overestimation of the equatorial velocity V rot sin i and underestimation of the component mass ratio q = M x /M v . A formula enabling correction of the effect of these simplifying assumptions on the shape of a star is used to re-determine the mass ratios q and the masses of the black holes M x and visual components M v in low-mass X-ray binary systems containing black holes. Taking into account the tidal–rotational distortion of the stellar shape can significantly increase the mass ratios q = M x /M v , reducing M v , while M x changes only slightly. The resulting distribution of M v attains its maximum near M v ? 0.35M , in disagreement with the results of population synthesis computations realizing standard models for Galactic X-ray novae with black holes. Possible ways to overcome this inconsistency are discussed. The derived distribution of M x also differs strongly from the mass distribution for massive stars in the Galaxy.  相似文献

Computations of the evolution of the distributions of the size and degree of aromatization of interstellar dust grains, destruction by radiation and collisions with gas particles, and fragmentation during collisions with other grains are presented. The results of these computations are used to model dust emission spectra. The evolution of an ensemble of dust particles sensitively depends on the initial size distribution of the grains. Radiation in the considered range of fluxes mainly aromatizes grains. With the exception of the smallest grains, it is mainly erosion during collisions with gas particles that leads to the destruction of grains. In the presence of particle velocities above 50 km/s, characteristic for shocks in supernova remnants, grains greater than 20 Å in size are absent. The IR emission spectrum changes appreciably during the evolution of the dust, and depends on the adopted characteristics of the grains, in particular, the energy of their C–Cbonds (E0). Aromatic bands are not observed in the near-IR (2–15 μm) when E0 is low, even when the medium characteristics are typical for the average interstellarmedium in our Galaxy; this indicates a preference for high E0 values. The influence of the characteristics of the medium on the intensity ratios for the dust emission in various photometric bands is considered. The I3.4/I11.3 intensity ratio is most sensitive to the degree of aromatization of small grains. The I3.3/I70+160 ratio is a sensitive indicator of the contribution of aromatic grains to the total mass of dust.  相似文献

Debris flow density determined by grain composition   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Density is one of the most important parameters of debris flows. Because observing an active debris flow is very difficult, finding a method to estimate debris flow density is urgently needed for disaster mitigation engineering. This paper proposes an effective empirical equation in terms of grain size distribution (GSD) parameters based on observations in Jiangjia Gully, Yunnan Province, China. We found that the GSD follows P(D) = KD exp(? D/Dc), with μ and Dc representing the fine and coarse grains, respectively. In particular, μ is associated with some characteristic porosity of soil in the natural state and increases with increased porosity. Dc characterizes the grain size range of the flow and increases with the grain concentration. Studies show that flow density is related to both parameters in power law. Here, we propose an empirical equation for estimating flow density: ρ = 1.26μ -0.132 + 0.049Dc0.443, which provides not only an estimation of the density for a flow, but also describes the variation in density with the GSD of material composition; this provides important information related to the design of debris flow engineering structures.  相似文献

Spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements, carried out regularly from a network of observatories spread over the Indian mainland and adjoining islands in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, are used to examine the spatio-temporal and spectral variations during the period of ICARB (March to May 2006). The AODs and the derived Ångström parameters showed considerable variations across India during the above period. While at the southern peninsular stations the AODs decreased towards May after a peak in April, in the north Indian regions they increased continuously from March to May. The Ångström coefficients suggested enhanced coarse mode loading in the north Indian regions, compared to southern India. Nevertheless, as months progressed from March to May, the dominance of coarse mode aerosols increased in the columnar aerosol size spectrum over the entire Indian mainland, maintaining the regional distinctiveness. Compared to the above, the island stations showed considerably low AODs, so too the northeastern station Dibrugarh, indicating the prevalence of cleaner environment. Long-range transport of aerosols from tshe adjoining regions leads to remarkable changes in the magnitude of the AODs and their wavelength dependencies during March to May. HYSPLIT back-trajectory analysis shows that enhanced long-range transport of aerosols, particularly from the west Asia and northwest coastal India, contributed significantly to the enhancement of AOD and in the flattening of the spectra over entire regions; if it is the peninsular regions and the island Minicoy are more impacted in April, the north Indian regions including the Indo Gangetic Plain get affected the most during May, with the AODs soaring as high as 1.0 at 500 nm. Over the islands, the Ångström exponent (α) remained significantly lower (~1) over the Arabian Sea compared to Bay of Bengal (BoB) (~1.4) as revealed by the data respectively from Minicoy and Port Blair. Occurrences of higher values of α, showing dominance of accumulation mode aerosols, over BoB are associated well with the advection, above the boundary layer, of fine particles from the east Asian region during March and April. The change in the airmass to marine in May results in a rapid decrease in α over the BoB.  相似文献

The results of hydrodynamical calculations of radially pulsating helium stars with masses 0.5MM≤0.9M, bolometric luminosities 600L≤5×103L, and effective temperatures 1.5×104 K≤Teff≤3.5×104 K are presented. The pulsation instability of these stars is due to the effects of ionization of iron-group elements in layers with temperatures T~2×105 K. The calculations were carried out using opacities for the relative mass abundances of hydrogen and heavy elements X=0 and Z=0.01, 0.015, and 0.02. Approximate formulas for the pulsation constant Q over the entire range of pulsation instability of the hot helium stars in terms of the mass M, radius R, effective temperature Teff, and heavy-element abundance Z are derived. The instability of BX Cir to radial pulsations with the observed period Π=0.1066 d occurs only for a mass M≥0.55M, effective temperature Teff≥23000 K, and heavy-element abundance Z≥0.015. The allowed mass of BX Cir is in the range 0.55MM≤0.8M, which corresponds to luminosities 800LM≤1400L and mean radii 1.7R?R?2.1R.  相似文献

For the first time, chemical characterization of PM10 aerosols was attempted over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and Arabian Sea (AS) during the ICARB campaign. Dominance of SO 4 2? , NH 4 + and NO 3 ? was noticed over both the regions which indicated the presence of ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate as major water soluble particles playing a very important role in the radiation budget. It was observed that all the chemical constituents had higher concentrations over Bay of Bengal as compared to Arabian Sea. Higher concentrations were observed near the Indian coast showing influence of landmass indicating that gaseous pollutants like SO2, NH3 and NO x are transported over to the sea regions which consequently contribute to higher SO 4 2? , NH 4 + and NO 3 ? aerosols respectively. The most polluted region over BoB was 13°?19°N and 70°?90°E while it was near 11°N and 75°E over AS. Although the concentrations were higher over Bay of Bengal for all the chemical constituents of PM10 aerosols, per cent non-sea salt (nss) fraction (with respect to Na) was higher over Arabian Sea. Very low Ca2+ concentration was observed at Arabian Sea which led to higher atmospheric acidity as compared to BoB. Nss SO 4 2? alone contributed 48% of total water soluble fraction over BoB as well as AS. Ratios SO 4 2? /NO ? 3 over both the regions (7.8 and 9 over BoB and AS respectively) were very high as compared to reported values at land sites like Allahabad (0.63) and Kanpur (0.66) which may be due to very low NO.3 over sea regions as compared to land sites. Air trajectory analysis showed four classes: (i) airmass passing through Indian land, (ii) from oceanic region, (iii) northern Arabian Sea and Middle East and (iv) African continent. The highest nss SO 4 2? was observed during airmasses coming from the Indian land side while lowest concentrations were observed when the air was coming from oceanic regions. Moderate concentrations of nss SO2. 4 were observed when air was seen moving from the Middle East and African continent. The pH of rainwater was observed to be in the range of 5.9–6.5 which is lower than the values reported over land sites. Similar feature was reported over the Indian Ocean during INDOEX indicating that marine atmosphere had more free acidity than land atmosphere.  相似文献

Modern modeling of the population of low-mass X-ray binary systems containing black holes applying standard assumptions leads to a lack of agreement between the modeled and observed mass distributions for the optical components, with the observed masses being lower. This makes the task of estimating the systematic errors in the derived component masses due to imperfect models relevant. To estimate the influence of systematic errors in the derived masses of stars in X-ray binary systems, we considered two approximations for the tidally deformed star in a Roche model. Approximating the star as a sphere with a volume equal to that of the Roche lobe leads to slight overestimation of the equatorial rotational velocity V rot sin i, and hence to slight underestimation of the mass ratio q = M x /M v . Approximating the star as a flat, circular disk with constant local line profiles and a linear limb-darkening law (a classical rotational broadeningmodel) is an appreciably cruder approach, and leads to overestimation of V rot sin i by about 20%. In the case of high values of q = M x /M v , this approximation leads to substantial underestimation of the mass ratio q, which can reach several tens of percent. The mass of the optical star is overestimated by a factor of 1.5 in this case, while the mass of the black hole is changed only slightly. Since most estimates of component mass ratios for X-ray binary systems are carried out using a classical rotational broadening model for the lines, this leads to the need for appreciable corrections to (reductions of) previously published masses for the optical stars, which enhances the contradiction with the standard evolutionary scenario for low-mass X-ray binaries containing black holes.  相似文献

A new statistical model is proposed for the molecular mass distributions (MMD) of polymerized anions in silicate melts. The model is based on the known distribution of Q n species in the MeO-Me2O-SiO2 system. In this model, chain and ring complexes are regarded as a random series of Q n structons with various concentrations of bridging bonds (1 ≤ n ≤ 4, Q 0 corresponds to SiO 4 4? ). This approach makes it possible to estimate the probability of formation of various ensembles of polymer species corresponding to the general formula (Si i O3i+1?j )2(i+1?j)?, where i is the size of the ion, and j is the cyclization number of intrachain bonds. The statistical model is utilized in the STRUCTON computer model, which makes use of the Monte Carlo method and is intended for the calculation of the composition and proportions of polyanions at a specified degree of polymerization of silicate melts (STRUCTON, version 1.2; 2007). Using this program, we simulated 1200 MMD for polyanions in the range of 0.52 ≤ p ≤98, where p is the fraction of nonbridging bonds in the silicon-oxygen matrix. The average number of types of anions in this range was determined to increase from three (SiO 4 4? , Si2O 7 6? , and Si3O 10 8? ) to 153, and their average size increases from 1 to 7.2. A special option of the STRUCTON program combines MMD reconstructions in silicate melts with the formalism of the Toop-Samis model, which enables the calculation of the mole fraction of the O2? ion relative to all anions in melts of specified composition. It is demonstrated that, with regard for the distribution and average size of anion complexes, the concentration of the O2? ion in the MeO-SiO2 system is characterized by two extrema: a minimum at 40–45 mol % SiO2, which corresponds to the initial stages of the gelenization of the polycondensated silicate matrix, and a maximum, which is predicted for the range of 60–80 mol % SiO2.  相似文献

Lower limits for the percentages of stars with various luminosities in the cores of six globular clusters are derived using stellar spatial density distributions f(r) to deep limiting B magnitudes obtained earlier. For NGC 6535 and NGC 5466, the logarithmic density range and Kholopov parameters Df and Dr are also determined. These two parameters are correlated with the mean masses of stars of various subsystems and the total mass (number) of stars in the cluster.  相似文献

The mixing of metals in the intergalactic gas when a galaxy with a metal-rich envelope moves through the intergalactic medium is analyzed. Two simple models for the initial distribution of metals are considered. In the first case, the metals are concentrated in a fairly thin envelope with thickness ΔR s =1 kpc, outer radius R s =31 kpc, and metallicity Z=10?3. In the second case, material with the same metallicity uniformly fills an entire spherical region of radius R s . After 2.85 Gyr, the metals are distributed over a fairly extended volume with a typical size of ?200 kpc in the direction of the motion of the intergalactic gas, with a mean metallicity of ?4.6×10?4 in metal-enriched regions. However, the distribution of metals remains extremely nonuniform, so that the main contribution to the overall metallicity is provided by metal-rich islands Z?6×10?4 that occupy only ~10% of the total mixing volume. Moreover, metal-free regions remain in this volume.  相似文献

A CCD BV R photometric study of the central region (15″ ≤ r ≤ 100″) of the globular cluster NGC 7006 based on color-magnitude diagrams is presented. We find for the main parameters of the cluster [Fe/H] = ?1.62, Y = 0.21, E B?V = 0.15 m , V HB = 18.84 m , M V HB =+0.56 m , R = 37.1 kpc). Two previously unknown RR Lyr variables were discovered in the central region of the cluster. The morphological index of the horizontal branch for the entire region studied indicates that the red stellar population dominates, consistent with previous studies: HB mi = ?0.13. Such anomalously negative morphological indices are possessed by a whole group of Ool clusters with intermediate metallicities, which also display a characteristic distribution of stars along the horizontal branch. There is a radial dependence for the horizontal-branch morphology, with the color becoming primarily blue with approach toward the cluster center. One possible origin for this behavior could be the effect of inner dynamical processes on the spatial distribution of hot stars.  相似文献

This study analyzed 267 landslide landforms (LLs) in the Kumamoto area of Japan from the database of about 0.4 million LLs for the whole of Japan identified from aerial photos by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience of Japan (NIED). Each LL in the inventory is composed of a scarp and a moving mass. Since landslides are prone to reactivation, it is important to evaluate the sliding-recurrence susceptibility of LLs. One possible approach to evaluate the susceptibility of LLs is slope stability analysis. A previous study found a good correlation (R 2 = 0.99) between the safety factor (F s ) and slope angle (α) of F s  = 17.3α ?0.843. We applied the equation to the analysis of F s for 267 LLs in the area affected by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake (M j  = 7.3). The F s was calculated for the following three cases of failure: scarps only, moving mass only, and scarps and moving mass together. Verification with the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake event shows that the most appropriate method for the evaluation of LLs is to consider the failure of scarps and moving mass together. In addition, by analyzing the relationship between the factors of slope of entire landslide and slope of scarp for LLs and comparing the results with the Aso-ohashi landslide, the largest landslide caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, we also found that morphometric analysis of LLs is useful for forecasting the travel distance of future landslides.  相似文献

Before starting seismic cycle of Ahar–Varzaghan 2012 event, a partial gap in the form of a pre-seismic calm sequence (seismicity rate, r = 0.46 event/year, b = 1.4) with duration of 303 days spatially has dominated over the entire seismogenic area. From April 17, 2012, to May 31, 2012, r significantly increased to 2.16, indicating strong foreshock sequence, and b value changed to 1.9, remarkably. In the last two months before the mainshock, foreshocks have partially migrated toward the earthquake fault (with a decrease in size, b = 2.0). Significantly, high rate of seismicity and low V P /V S (1.64) in the foreshocks sequence and also very high seismicity rate (17.3) and high V P /V S (1.76) in the aftershocks sequence make substantial differences between the seismic cycle and the background seismicity. Moreover, a significant E–W migration of the microseismicity was confirmed in the study area.  相似文献

Fine sediment inputs can alter estuarine ecosystem structure and function. However, natural variations in the processes that regulate sediment transport make it difficult to predict their fate. In this study, sediments were sampled at different times (2011–2012) from 45 points across intertidal sandflat transects in three New Zealand estuaries (Whitford, Whangamata, and Kawhia) encompassing a wide range in mud (≤63 μm) content (0–56 %) and macrofaunal community structure. Using a core-based erosion measurement device (EROMES), we calculated three distinct measures of sediment erosion potential: erosion threshold (? c ; N m?2), erosion rate (ER; g m?2 s?1), and change in erosion rate with increasing bed shear stress (m e ; g N?1 s?1). Collectively, these measures characterized surface (? c and ER) and sub-surface (m e ) erosion. Benthic macrofauna were grouped by functional traits (size and motility) and data pooled across estuaries to determine relationships between abiotic (mud content, mean grain size) and biotic (benthic macrofauna, microbial biomass) variables and erosion measures. Results indicated that small bioturbating macrofauna (predominantly freely motile species <5 mm in size) destabilized surface sediments, explaining 23 % of the variation in ? c (p ≤ 0.01) and 59 % of the variation in ER (p ≤ 0.01). Alternatively, mud content and mean grain size cumulatively explained 61 % of the variation in m e (p ≤ 0.01), where increasing mud and grain size stabilized sub-surface sediments. These results highlight that the importance of biotic and abiotic predictors vary with erosion stage and that functional group classifications are a useful way to determine the impact of benthic macrofauna on sediment erodibility across communities with different species composition.  相似文献

We have obtained the first estimates of the masses of the components of the Her X-1/HZ Her X-ray binary system taking into account non-LTE effects in the formation of the H γ absorption line: m x = 1.8 M and m v = 2.5 M . These mass estimates were made in a Roche model based on the observed radial-velocity curve of the optical star, HZ Her. The masses for the X-ray pulsar and optical star obtained for an LTE model lie are m x = 0.85 ± 0.15 M and m v = 1.87 ± 0.13 M . These mass estimates for the components of Her X-1/HZ Her derived from the radial-velocity curve should be considered tentative. Further mass estimates from high-precision observations of the orbital variability of the absorption profiles in a non-LTE model for the atmosphere of the optical component should be made.  相似文献

During March–May 2006, an extensive, multi-institution, multi-instrument, and multi-platform integrated field experiment ‘Integrated Campaign for Aerosols, gases and Radiation Budget’ (ICARB) was carried out under the Geosphere Biosphere Programme of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO-GBP). The objective of this largest and most exhaustive field campaign, ever conducted in the Indian region, was to characterize the physico-chemical properties and radiative effects of atmospheric aerosols and trace gases over the Indian landmass and the adjoining oceanic regions of the Arabian Sea, northern Indian Ocean, and Bay of Bengal through intensive, simultaneous observations. A network of ground-based observatories (over the mainland and islands), a dedicated ship cruise over the oceanic regions using a fully equipped research vessel, the Sagar Kanya, and altitude profiling over selected regions using an instrumented aircraft and balloonsondes formed the three segments of this integrated experiment, which were carried out in tandem. This paper presents an overview of the ICARB field experiment, the database generated, and some of its interesting outcomes though these are preliminary in nature.
The ICARB has revealed significant spatio-temporal heterogeneity in most of the aerosol characteristics both over land and ocean. Observed aerosol loading and optical depths were comparable to or in certain regions, a little lower than those reported in some of the earlier campaigns for these regions. The preliminary results indicate:
  • low (< 0.2) aerosol optical depths (AOD) over most part of the Arabian Sea, except two pockets; one off Mangalore and the other, less intense, in the central Arabian Sea at ~18°N latitude
  • High Ångström exponent in the southern Arabian Sea signifying steep AOD spectra and higher abundance of accumulation mode particles in the southern Arabian Sea and off Mangalore
  • Remarkably low Ångström exponents signifying increased concentration of coarse mode aerosols and high columnar abundance in the northern Arabian Sea
  • Altitude profiles from aircraft showed a steady BC level up to 3 km altitude with structures which were associated with inversions in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL)
  • A surprisingly large increase in the BC mass fraction with altitude
  • Presence of a convectively mixed layer extending up to about 1 km over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal
  • A spatial off shore extent of <100 km for the anthropogenic impact at the coast; and
  • Advection of aerosols, through airmass trajectories, from west Asia and NW arid regions of India leading to formation of elevated aerosol layers extending as far as 400 km off the east coast.

A lack of understanding exists of the origin and textural characteristics of Saudi Arabian Red Sea coastal sediments. This paper concerns the southern coastline of Jizan on the Saudi Red Sea. It is some 160 km long characterised by either narrow rocky headlands with intermittent pocket beaches or wide low-lying beaches dissected by wadis. Granulometric testing of samples from 135 locations showed that beach sand size was mainly very fine to medium grained (M z = 3.93 Ø), sorting ranged from 1.65 to 0.41 and skewness values from ?051 to 0.39, being mainly negative; dune sands were medium to fine grained (M z = 1.13 Ø; average sorting 2.8), while skewness variations within dune samples indicated symmetrical to fine skewed values (б Ι = 0.55 to 0.89). Most foreshore samples were derived from wadis. Wadi mud levels can be high, e.g. Baysh (84%), and wadi Samrah (90%) with mean grain size ranging from very fine to medium sand (M z = 3.9 Ø), sorting being well to poor (0.45 to 1.52) due to sediment influxes. Sabkha had a wide range of sand/mud and significantly higher carbonate percentages than other environments. Sediment source differences and littoral reworking contributed to grain size variation. The carbonate content varied between 1.5 and 31.5% due to hinterland contributions, and spatial analysis showed increasing quantities of carbonate minerals towards the south. On the wider geographical front, findings from Jizan are similar to those of the Northern United Arab Emirates (UAE), including sabkhas, being composed of sand, skeletal carbonate, fine fluvial material and wind-blown silt and clay components of wadi origin. Further work on the northeastern Red Sea edge can hopefully confirm these findings.  相似文献

We present the results of spectroscopic observations of the X-ray binary V404 Cyg obtained on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in 2001–2002. We have used a statistical approach to interpret the radial-velocity curve of V404 Cyg. We derived the dependence of the mass of the X-ray emitting component mx on the mass of the optical component mv via an analysis of the radial-velocity curve based on profiles of the CaI 6439.075 Å absorption line synthesized in a Roche model. Using the orbital inclination estimated from the ellipticity of the optical component, i=54°–64°, and the component-mass ratio q=mx/mv=16.7 found from the rotational broadening of the spectral lines, we obtain m s =10.65±1.95M for the mass of the black hole.  相似文献
