We performed cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulations to follow the evolution of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters, exploring the possibility that the origin of the magnetic seed fields is galactic outflows during the starburst phase of galactic evolution. To do this, we coupled a semi-analytical model for magnetized galactic winds as suggested by Bertone, Vogt & Enßlin to our cosmological simulation. We find that the strength and structure of magnetic fields observed in galaxy clusters are well reproduced for a wide range of model parameters for the magnetized, galactic winds and do only weakly depend on the exact magnetic structure within the assumed galactic outflows. Although the evolution of a primordial magnetic seed field shows no significant differences to that of galaxy cluster fields from previous studies, we find that the magnetic field pollution in the diffuse medium within filaments is below the level predicted by scenarios with pure primordial magnetic seed field. We therefore conclude that magnetized galactic outflows and their subsequent evolution within the intracluster medium can fully account for the observed magnetic fields in galaxy clusters. Our findings also suggest that measuring cosmological magnetic fields in low-density environments such as filaments is much more useful than observing cluster magnetic fields to infer their possible origin.  相似文献

There is growing evidence that the active galactic nuclei (AGN) associated with the central elliptical galaxy in clusters of galaxies are playing an important role in the evolution of the intracluster medium (ICM) and clusters themselves. We use high-resolution three-dimensional simulations to study the interaction of the cavities created by AGN outflows (bubbles) with the ambient ICM. The gravitational potential of the cluster is modelled using the observed temperature and density profiles of the Virgo cluster. We demonstrate the importance of the hydrodynamical Kutta–Zhukovsky forces associated with the vortex ring structure of the bubbles, and discuss possible effects of diffusive processes on their evolution.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the behaviour of a perturbed radio cocoon. Comparisons with observations of sound waves detected in the Perseus and Virgo clusters suggest the separations of observed ripples correspond to the natural oscillation frequency of the cocoon. An energy injection rate consistent with active galactic nucleus power is required to offset the strong acoustic damping of cocoon oscillations, suggesting the sources are in equilibrium with the intracluster medium (ICM), and the oscillations are effectively undamped. Viscous dissipation of sound waves provides ICM heating that can quench cooling flows on time-scales greatly exceeding the oscillation time-scale. Thermal conductivity is likely to be heavily suppressed.  相似文献

Three-dimensional simulations of light hydrodynamic jets are computed using the Zeus-3D code. We employ parameters corresponding to moderate to high power radio jets emerging through a galactic atmosphere or halo, and eventually crossing a tilted pressure matched interface with a hotter intracluster medium. These simulations aim the jets so that they hit massive dense clouds within the galactic halo. Such clouds are set up with radii several times that of the jet, and nominally correspond to giant molecular cloud complexes or small cannibalized galaxies. We find that powerful jets eventually disperse the clouds, but that, for the off-center collisions considered, non-axisymmetric instabilities are induced in those jets. Those instabilities grow faster for lower Mach number jets, and can produce disruptions substantially sooner than occurred in our earlier work on jets in the absence of collisions with massive clouds. Such interactions could be related to some Compact Steep Spectrum source morphologies. Very weak jets can be effectively halted by reasonably massive clouds, and this may have relevance for the paucity of radio jets in spiral galaxies. Slow, dense jets may be bent, yet remain stable for fairly extended times, thereby explaining some Wide-Angle-Tail and most “dog-leg” morphologies.  相似文献

The fate of interstellar gas heated by energetic radiation and far from the galactic plane is considered. It is shown that for plausible heating rates a very hot corona forms, separated from the cooler gas in the disk by a conductive boundary layer. For heating rates exceeding a critical value a galactic wind is set up, as first shown by Mathews and Baker for elliptical galaxies. Such winds may fill the intracluster space in clusters of galaxies; further heating may drive a cluster wind, as shown by Yahil and Ostriker. It is believed that the flow problem of intracluster gas in the presence of intercluster gas is not yet adequately solved. A variety of observations at X-ray and ultraviolet wavelengths are needed to resolve these questions.  相似文献

We compare the gravitational potential profiles of the elliptical galaxies NGC 4486 (M87) and NGC 1399 (the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster) derived from X-ray and optical data. This comparison suggests that the combined contribution of cosmic rays, magnetic fields and microturbulence to the pressure is ∼10 per cent of the gas thermal pressure in the cores of NGC 1399 and M87, although the uncertainties in our model assumptions (e.g. spherical symmetry) are sufficiently large that the contribution could be consistent with zero. In the absence of any other form of non-thermal pressure support, these upper bounds translate into upper limits on the magnetic field of ∼10–20 μG at a distance of 1–2 arcmin from the centers of NGC 1399 and M87. We show that these results are consistent with the current paradigm of cool cluster cores, based on the assumption that active galactic nuclei regulate the thermal state of the gas by injecting energy into the intracluster medium. The limit of ∼10–20 per cent on the energy density in the form of relativistic protons applies not only to the current state of the gas, but also essentially to the entire history of the intracluster medium, provided that cosmic ray protons evolve adiabatically and that their spatial diffusion is suppressed.  相似文献

We have studied the effects of Compton cooling on cooling flow by performing numerical hydrodynamic calculations of the time evolution of hot gas in clusters of galaxies with luminous quasars. We assumed various temperatures for the hot intracluster gas. We have shown that the Compton cooling resulting from very luminous quasars is effective in inducing cooling flow, before radiative cooling flow is realized. The mass flux resulting from the cooling flow increases with time, as the Compton-cooled region expands. However, the mass flux of the Compton cooling flow is not large, less than 1 M⊙ yr−1 in our model, because the Compton-cooled region is limited to an inner galactic region around a quasar. Even after the quasar active phase has ceased, the cooling flow will continue for at least 109 yr. The accreted mass is enough to explain X-ray absorption lines in high-redshift quasars, if the Compton-cooled gas is compressed by high-pressure intracluster gas.  相似文献

We investigate the history of galactic feedback and chemical enrichment within a sample of 15 X-ray bright groups of galaxies, on the basis of the inferred Fe and Si distributions in the hot gas and the associated metal masses produced by core-collapse and Type Ia supernovae (SNe). Most of these cool-core groups show a central Fe and Si excess, which can be explained by prolonged enrichment by SN Ia and stellar winds in the central early-type galaxy alone, but with tentative evidence for additional processes contributing to core enrichment in hotter groups. Inferred metal mass-to-light ratios inside r 500 show a positive correlation with total group mass but are generally significantly lower than in clusters, due to a combination of lower global intracluster medium (ICM) abundances and gas-to-light ratios in groups. This metal deficiency is present for products from both SN Ia and SN II, and suggests that metals were either synthesized, released from galaxies or retained within the ICM less efficiently in lower mass systems. We explore possible causes, including variations in galaxy formation and metal release efficiency, cooling out of metals, and gas and metal loss via active galactic nuclei (AGN) – or starburst-driven galactic winds from groups or their precursor filaments. Loss of enriched material from filaments coupled with post-collapse AGN feedback emerges as viable explanations, but we also find evidence for metals to have been released less efficiently from galaxies in cooler groups and for the ICM in these to appear chemically less evolved, possibly reflecting more extended star formation histories in less massive systems. Some implications for the hierarchical growth of clusters from groups are briefly discussed.  相似文献

From prints of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey the widths of the equatorial dust layers of a sample of 39 galaxies seen on edge are obtained to be in the range 500 ≤ D ≤ 1600 pc. The width of a dust layer seems to be correlated with the luminosity of the galaxy. The dust lanes of field galaxies are obviously broader than those of the members of the Virgo cluster. This result may be interpreted as a dust deficiency caused by stripping of interstellar matter resulting from galactic collisions and interaction of the galaxies with the intracluster medium.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that the heating of gas in clusters of galaxies by active galactic nuclei is a form of feedback. Feedback is required to ensure a long-term, sustainable balance between heating and cooling. This work investigates the impact of proportional stochastic feedback on the energy balance in the intracluster medium. Using a generalized analytical model for a cluster atmosphere, it is shown that an energy equilibrium can be reached exponentially quickly. Applying the tools of stochastic calculus, it is demonstrated that the result is robust with regard to the model parameters, even though they affect the amount of variability in the system.  相似文献

We present the BVR broad-band polarimetric observations of 51 stars belonging to the young open cluster IC 1805. Along with the photometric data from the literature, we have modelled and subtracted the foreground dust contribution from the maximum polarization ( P max) and colour excess [ E ( B − V )]. The mean value of the P max for intracluster medium and the foreground are found to be 5.008 ± 0.005 and 4.865 ± 0.022 per cent, respectively. Moreover, the mean value of the wavelength of maximum polarization (λmax) for intracluster medium is 0.541 ± 0.003 μ m, which is quite similar as the general interstellar medium (ISM). The resulting intracluster dust component is found to have negligible polarization efficiency as compared to interstellar dust. Some of the observed stars in IC 1805 have shown the indication of intrinsic polarization in their measurements.  相似文献

We present detailed observations of MRC 0116+111, revealing a luminous, miniradio halo of ∼240-kpc diameter located at the centre of a cluster of galaxies at redshift   z = 0.131  . Our optical and multiwavelength Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and Very Large Array radio observations reveal a highly unusual radio source: showing a pair of giant (∼100-kpc diameter) bubble-like diffuse structures, that are about three times larger than the analogous extended radio emission observed in M87 – the dominant central radio galaxy in the Virgo cluster. However, in MRC 0116+111 we do not detect any ongoing active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity, such as a compact core or active radio jets feeding the plasma bubbles. The radio emitting relativistic particles and magnetic fields were probably seeded in the past by a pair of radio jets originating in the AGN of the central cD galaxy. The extremely steep high-frequency radio spectrum of the north-western bubble, located ∼100 kpc from cluster centre, indicates radiation losses, possibly because having detached, it is rising buoyantly and moving away into the putative hot intracluster medium. The other bubble, closer to the cluster centre, shows signs of ongoing particle re-acceleration. We estimate that the radio jets which inflated these two bubbles might have also fed enough energy into the intracluster medium to create an enormous system of cavities and shock fronts, and to drive a massive outflow from the AGN, which could counter-balance and even quench a cooling flow. Therefore, this source presents an excellent opportunity to understand the energetics and the dynamical evolution of radio jet inflated plasma bubbles in the hot cluster atmosphere.  相似文献

In the generic CDM cosmogony, dark-matter haloes emerge too lumpy and centrally concentrated to host observed galactic discs. Moreover, discs are predicted to be smaller than those observed. We argue that the resolution of these problems may lie with a combination of the effects of protogalactic discs, which would have had a mass comparable to that of the inner dark halo and be plausibly non-axisymmetric, and of massive galactic winds, which at early times may have carried off as many baryons as a galaxy now contains. A host of observational phenomena, from quasar absorption lines and intracluster gas through the G-dwarf problem, point to the existence of such winds. Dynamical interactions will homogenize and smooth the inner halo, and the observed disc will be the relic of a massive outflow. The inner halo expanded after absorbing energy and angular momentum from the ejected material. Observed discs formed at the very end of the galaxy formation process, after the halo had been reduced to a minor contributor to the central mass budget and strong radial streaming of the gas had died down.  相似文献

We have modelled, for the cases of Milky Way and M31, the effects on the galactic discs, of the arrival at high velocity (≥150 km s−1) of giant HI clouds, with masses of up to 108M⊙. Predictions are compared with the detailed structure of the observed rotation curves for these two galaxies. The model explains the rises and falls observed at large distances from the centre of each galaxy, distributed with a degree of regularity in radius, in terms of a specific type of perturbations driven by the infall of the high velocity clouds (HVC's) arriving from the intracluster medium of the Local Group. The underlying rotation curve is explained conventionally via the distribution of the baryonic and dark matter components of the galaxy in question. This scenario, though tested here on the two major Local Group objects, is in principle applicable to galaxies undergoing minor mergers with subgalactic mass gas clouds.  相似文献

We present a joint analysis of near-ultraviolet ( NUV ) data from the GALEX ( Galaxy Evolution Explorer ) mission and (optical) colour profiles for a sample of seven brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the Canadian Cluster Comparison Project. We find that every BCG, which has a blue rest-frame UV colour, also shows a blue core in its optical colour profile. Conversely, BCGs that lack blue cores and show monotonic colour gradients typical of old elliptical galaxies are red in the UV. We interpret this as evidence that the NUV enhancement in the blue BCGs is driven by recent star formation and not from old evolved stellar populations such as horizontal branch stars. Furthermore, the UV enhancement cannot be from an active galactic nuclei (AGN) because the spatial extent of the blue cores is significantly larger than the possible contamination region due to a massive black hole. The recent star formation in the blue BCGs typically has an age less than 200 Myr and contributes mass fractions of less than a per cent. Although the sample studied here is small, we demonstrate, for the first time , a one-to-one correspondence between blue cores in elliptical galaxies (in particular BCGs) and a NUV enhancement observed using GALEX . The combination of this one-to-one correspondence and the consistently young age of recent star formation, coupled with additional correlations with the host cluster's X-ray properties, strongly suggests that the star formation is fuelled by gas cooling out of the intracluster medium. In turn, this implies that any AGN heating of the intracluster medium in massive clusters only acts to reduce the magnitude of the cooling flow and once this flow starts, it is nearly always active. Collectively, these results suggest that AGN feedback in present-day BCGs, while important, cannot be as efficient as suggested by the recent theoretical model by proposed by De Lucia et al.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of magnetic flux loops embedded in an intracluster medium. In order to perform the calculations semi-analytically we make several simplifying assumptions, which include a treatment of only the two ends of the magnetic flux loops, assuming a simple relation between the density and the magnetic field and neglecting heat conduction. Our results indicate that the existence of a large number of magnetic flux loops can naturally lead to a multiphase intracluster medium. A multiphase intracluster medium is inferred from observations of the mass deposition rate in many cooling-flow clusters. The loops will be observed as 'filaments' having different density and temperature from their surroundings, namely X-ray filaments. X-ray filaments have been discovered in a few cases, although their discovery is controversial. Our model predicts that many such X-ray filaments will be discovered with future high-spatial-resolution X-ray telescopes, such as AXAF .  相似文献

We use line-of-sight velocity information on the filamentary emission-line nebula of NGC 1275 to infer a dynamical model of the nebula's flow through the surrounding intracluster gas. We detect outflowing gas and flow patterns that match simulations of buoyantly rising bubbles from which we deduce that some of the nebula filaments have been drawn out of NGC 1275. We find a radial gradient of the ratio [N  ii ]λ6584/Hα which may be due to a variation in metallicity, interactions with the surrounding intracluster medium or a hardening of the excitation mechanism. We find no preferred spatial correlation of stellar clusters within the filaments and there is a notable lack of [O  iii ]λ5007 emission, therefore it is unlikely that the filaments are ionized by stellar ultraviolet.  相似文献

Stellar photometry for three fields in the Virgo cluster of galaxies has been performed on the basis of archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images. The densely populated red giant branches belonging to cluster galaxies are seen on the constructed Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams. The distances to eight galaxies in the Virgo cluster have been determined by the TRGB method. The sizes of the stellar subsystems and the gradients in the number density of red giants along the galactic radius have been determined for the investigated galaxies. The stellar periphery of the galaxies has been found to extend to great distances and to cover the entire area of the images used. Therefore, the stars that have previously been thought to be intracluster stars actually belong to the periphery of neighboring galaxies.  相似文献

We argue that a combined evidence from galactic and extragalactic studies suggests that a major star formation in giant galaxies is preceded by an evolutionary phase at which a strong galactic wind driven by the initial burst of star formation enriches the gaseous protogalaxy with metals and heats it up, so that the latter turns over from contraction to expansion. The result is the ejection of enriched material from the outer part of the protogalaxy into the intergalactic space, while the inner part, after a delay of about one to a few Gyr, finally contracts and cools down to form the galactic major stellar component (the hot model of galaxy formation). The paper presents a specific mechanism to produce a hot protogalaxy according to which an early galactic wind is imparting energy and momentum into a collapsing protogalaxy whose mass is contained mainly in clouds and only a small portion is in the intercloud gas that provides pressure confinement for the clouds. The model is then capable of accounting for the nearly equal mass and iron abundance in cluster giant galaxies and the intracluster gas provided the observationally plausible input parameters for giant galaxies and early galactic winds are adopted. It also predicts the formation of long-lived X-ray coronae with characteristics similar to those observed around giant ellipticals. The model specifies a characteristic length-scale that can be very naturally interpreted as a size for a stellar system to come; a very encouraging result is that it perfectly fits in with a typical size of giant ellipticals.  相似文献
