Abstract

A high vertical resolution model is used to examine the instability of a baroclinic zonal flow and a finite amplitude topographically forced wave. Two families of unstable modes are found, consisting of zonally propagating most unstable modes, and stationary unstable modes. The former have time scale and spatial structure similar to baroclinic synoptic disturbances, but are localized in space due to interaction with the zonally asymmetric forcing. These modes transport heat efficiently in both the zonal and meridional directions. The second family of stationary unstable modes has characteristics of modes of low frequency variability of the atmosphere. They have time scales of 10 days and longer, and are of planetary scale with an equivalent barotropic vertical structure. The horizontal structure resembles blocking flows. They are maintained by available potential energy of the basic wave, and have large zonal heat fluxes. The results for both families of modes are interpreted in terms of an interaction between forcing and baroclinic instability to create favoured regions for eddy development. Applications to baroclinic planetary waves are also considered.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper investigates the generation of linear baroclinic Rossby waves by meridional oscillations of a climatological zonal wind stress in a reduced gravity ocean bounded by an eastern coastline. Using a power series technique an analytical solution is derived for the interfacial displacement. It is found that for a given period of oscillation of the zonal winds, a finite number of propagating Rossby waves will be generated with frequencies equal to a harmonic of the forcing frequency. The number of propagating modes increases with increasing period of the wind stress. In addition to the propagating waves the complete solution for the interfacial displacement consists of a rapidly convergent infinite sum of evanescent terms. The displacement field is calculated for atmospheric forcing parameters typical of those found at mid-latitudes. Further, it is shown that a near resonant response can be generated using atmospheric parameter values typical of those found over the North Pacific.  相似文献

In tropical areas, when the zonal or meridional geostrophic equilibrium is destroyed, inertial gravity wave will be excited by ageostrophic motion, with the dispersion of the wave, a new zonal or meridional geostrophic balance will be established again, and it follows an invariant of semi-potential vorticity. Based on the invariant, it should be pointed out that the direction of the zonal or meridional semi-geostrophic adaptation depends mainly upon the meridional characteristic scale of initial disturbance. For the zonal (meridional) semi-geostrophic adaptation, if the zonal characteristic scale of initial disturbance is big (small) enough, then the adaptation process always represents the mutual adjustment between the pressure field and zonal (meridional) flow.  相似文献

Abstract

The generation of stationary Rossby waves by sources of potential vorticity in a westerly flow is examined here in the context of a two-layer, quasi-geostrophic, β-plane model. The response in each layer consists of a combination of a barotropic Rossby wave disturbance that extends far downstream of the source, and a baroclinic disturbance which is evanescent or wave-like in character, depending on the shear and degree of stratification. Contributions from each of these modes in each layer are strongly dependent on the basic flows in each layer; the degree of stratification; and the depths of the two layers. The lower layer response is dominated by an evanescent baroclinic mode when the upper layer westerlies are much larger than those in the lower layer. In this case, weak stationary Rossby waves of large wavelengths are confined to the upper layer and the disturbance in the lower layer is confined to the source region.

Increasing the upper layer flow (with the lower layer flow fixed) increases the Rossby wavelength and decreases the amplitude. Decreasing the lower layer flow (with the upper layer flow fixed) decreases the wavelength and increases the amplitude. Stratification increases the contribution from the barotropic wave-like mode and causes the response to be confined to the lower layer.

The finite amplitude response to westerly flow over two sources of potential vorticity is also considered. In this case stationary Rossby waves induced by both sources interact to reinforce or diminish the downstream wave pattern depending on the separation distance of the sources relative to the Rossby wavelength. For fixed separation distance, enhancement of the downstreatm Rossby waves will only occur for a narrow range of flow variables and stratification.  相似文献

Observations from the Nimbus 6 pressure modulator radiometer (PMR) have been used to estimate monthly mean planetary wave fluxes of heat and momentum in the stratosphere and mesosphere. While the eddy heat fluxes play an important role in the mean meridional circulation of the winter stratosphere they are shown to be less important in the upper mesosphere. Incorporation of the observed momentum fluxes into the Oxford two-dimensional circulation model has shown that they are incapable of providing the momentum transport necessary to balance the zonal flow accelerations induced by the mean meridional motion. Other unspecified transfer processes represented by Rayleigh frictional damping of the zonal fow are shown to dominate. In contrast the observed fluxes in the stratosphere achieve the necessary redistribution of momentum. Moreover their interannual variability profoundly influences the stratospheric circulation, as demonstrated in the model by the use of two different annual sets of observed momentum fluxes. The desirability of calculating the planetary wave behaviour within the model is indicated.  相似文献

The effect of viscosity, non linearities, incident wave period and realistic eastern coastline geometry on energy fluxes are investigated using a shallow water model with a spatial resolution of 1/4 degree in both meridional and zonal directions. Equatorial and mid-latitude responses are considered. It is found that (1) the influence of the coastline geometry and the incident wave period is more important for the westward energy flux than for the poleward flux, and (2) the effect of the inclination of the eastern ocean boundary on the poleward energy flux, for the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, decline as the period of the incident wave increases. Furthermore, the model simulations suggest that the poleward energy fluxes from meridional boundaries give plausible results for motions of seasonal and annual periods. For comparatively shorter periods, a realistic coastline geometry has to be included for more accurate results. It is recommended that any numerical model involving the reflection of baroclinic Rossby waves (of intraseasonal, seasonal or annual periods) on the eastern Pacific or Atlantic Oceans, should consider the effect of the coastline geometry in order to improve the accuracy of the results.  相似文献

Abstract

We study the formation of lenses of the ocean's intermediate water using a 2.5-layerβ-plane primitive equation model with localized injection of water mass. For the injecting rate of 1.0 Sv, we have observed that strong vortices are shed regularly. These vortices propagate westward much faster than the second baroclinic long Rossby wave. They are totally isolated from each other and show strong baroclinicity as well. Moreover, they remain stable over a sufficiently long period of time. Regular formation of such strong vortices in the intermediate layer has not been reported previously. The translation speed is explained using the Euler's momentum integral theorem for the nonlinear baroclinic vortex on the β-plane. We have demonstrated that coupling between the primary motion in the intermediate layer and the secondary motion in the upper layer with a meridional shift is crucial to the fast westward translation of the intense vortices. A simple dispersion formula relating the zonal translation speed with the vortex radius is also derived under the assumption of quasi-geostrophy. It has turned out that the analytical relation explains the numerical results surprisingly well despite the limitation of its derivation.  相似文献

本文将夏季气候平均的基本气流分解为正压和斜压分量,使用一个线性斜压模式,研究了不同斜压基本气流对热带西北太平洋地区初始气旋性环流扰动低频发展演变的重要作用.其中,控制试验较好地模拟出初始气旋扰动向西北方向传播、在西北太平洋季风槽附近停滞增强、在东亚地区出现经向波列和在南海到海洋大陆地区形成西北—东南向波列等特征.改变斜压分量的敏感性试验结果表明,正压基流不能为西传的初始扰动供给足够的能量;海陆热力差异引起东亚地区的纬向温度梯度和北风垂直切变,是东亚太平洋型经向波列形成和维持的重要因素;当基本气流中的斜压纬向偏差部分线性增大时,扰动的能量会呈e指数迅速增强,提示在气候变化的背景下,基本气流微小的改变可能带来天气或季节内扰动强度的剧烈响应.  相似文献

Abstract

The south-easterly surface flow down the slopes of Antarctica induces a transfer of westerly angular momentum to the atmosphere, which must be removed from the Antarctic domain by atmospheric transports. It is suggested that synoptic eddies protruding from the northern baroclinic zone into the polar regions are modified by the topography such that they are able to perform these meridional transports. A simple linear two-layer model of the axisymmetric circulation of Antarctica is presented where the eddy effects are incorporated via a K-ansatz. It is shown that qualitatively realistic mean flow patterns can be obtained with this model. The limitations of this approach are exposed.  相似文献

Abstract

A spectral low-order model is proposed in order to investigate some effects of bottom corrugation on the dynamics of forced and free Rossby waves. The analysis of the interaction between the waves and the topographic modes in the linear version of the model shows that the natural frequencies lie between the corresponding Rossby wave frequencies for a flat bottom and those applying in the “topographic limit” when the beta-effect is zero. There is a possibility of standing or eastward-travelling free waves when the integrated topograhic effect exceeds the planetary beta-effect.

The nonlinear interactions between forced waves in the presence of topography and the beta-effect give rise to a steady dynamical mode correlated to the topographic mode. The periodic solution that includes this steady wave is stable when the forcing field moves to the West with relatively large phase speed. The energy of this solution may be transferred to the steady zonal shear flow if the spatial scale of this zonal mode exceeds the scale of the directly forced large-scale dynamical mode.  相似文献

Abstract

A study is made to determine the stability properties of a baroclinic zonal current on which small amplitude three‐dimensional non‐geostrophic disturbances are superimposed. The flow is assumed to be bounded to the north and south by rigid vertical walls and the Rossby number Ro is taken to be small compared to unity. It is then shown that if the perturbation quantities are expanded in power series in Ro the leading or zero order terms in the series correspond to the quasi‐geostrophic solution obtained by Eady (1949) and that the higher order terms represent the “non‐geostrophic” effects neglected by the latter.

It is shown that to the second order in Ro the non‐geostrophic effects decrease the growth rates of those disturbances which are found to be unstable according to Eady's analysis but do not alter their speed of propagation. The results indicate, on the other hand, that to the same order of approximation the stable waves travel at a speed which is different from that given by Eady's solution. The modification of the perturbation wave structure by the non‐geostrophic effects is also investigated. It is found in particular that to the first order in Ro the latter produce a northward tilt with height in the ridge (or trough) lines of the meridional and vertical particle velocity fields away from the lateral boundaries.  相似文献

Abstract

A meridional circulation of sunspots has been measured through the digital analysis of the Meudon spectroheliograms from 1978 to 1983. Old and young sunspots follow a zonal meridional circulation, in several bands of latitude, in which two adjacent bands have opposite motions. This meridional circulation pattern is time-dependent. Using the H α filaments as magnetic field tracers, a large-scale magnetic pattern has been found that was also obtained independently by direct measurement of the magnetic field (Hoeksema, 1988).

The coincidence of a large-scale magnetic pattern with a zonal meridional circulation suggests the existence of azimuthal rolls below the surface, and these azimuthal rolls can explain a number of properties of the solar cycle. New rolls occur with increasing proximity to the Equator, thereby indicating the direction of propagation of the dynamo wave. The occurrence of rolls is very favorable to the emergence of the magnetic regions. The rolls also influence the magnetic complexity of the active regions. They modulate the surface rotation through the Coriolis force, which accelerates or decelerates the fluid particles. They therefore offer a plausible explanation of the torsional oscillation pattern.

There are a number of problems raised by such an unexpected circulation pattern: for example, the coexistence of axisymmeric rolls with hypothetical giant cells, the location of the dynamo source below or within the convective zone, and the coupling of the radiative interior and the convective layers. To resolve these important issues, continuous observational studies are needed of the manifestation of solar activity, as well as of radius and luminosity variations. So, we have aimed our paper at an audience of theoreticians in the hope that they take up the challenges we describe.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of the upper boundary condition on the regime diagram and certain characteristics of the convection within a rotating, differentially heated cylindrical anulus of water were studied in the laboratory. It was found that the regime diagram was not substantially affected by the upper boundary condition. However, the thermal amplitude of the baroclinic waves, as a function of parameter space, and, as expected from previous work, the angular drift velocity of those waves were found to be strongly affected by the upper boundary condition. When the upper surface was free, the amplitude changes were explosive and highly non-linear (as discovered earlier by Kaiser, 1970). When the upper surface was rigid, they were smooth and quite linear. The baroclinic wave patterns drifted round the annulus at rates which were in direct response to the imposed “thermal wind”. However, (as previously observed by Koschmieder, 1972), when the upper surface was rigid they drifted approximately ten times more slowly than when it was free.  相似文献

Abstract

In order to derive general zonal flux expressions this paper deals with the influence of slow (Ωτ<1) rotation on highly anisotropic stochastic motions. The radial and latitudinal fluxes of angular momentum are derived and depend on two spectral functions. The results are applied to the often used example of spatially periodic correlations, i.e., to one-mode spectra. The zonal fluxes in this case can be expressed as combinations of the intensities of the three velocity components and the wave number vector. Specializing these quantities to the cases discussed in the literature. we are able to reproduce previously published results. Moreover, after a replacement of the ensemble averages by those over the longitudinal coordinate, fluxes result which hare been derived for non-axisymmetric modes with l=m. Thus, a fairly complete account is given of results published in this field up to the present.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper investigates the generation of linear, baroclinic Rossby waves by an imposed current distribution, in a reduced gravity ocean, both with and without an eastern coast. A zonal current is impulsively applied and maintained along the northern edge of the domain of solution. Using Green's function techniques, analytical solutions are found, and these are evaluated for small times. Numerical solutions are obtained for larger times. The upper layer depth field consists of a transient response, due to the sudden application of the current. Maintenance of the current causes a response which is singular along the line of imposed non-zero h y. The interior field decays with time (this is shown asymptotically). The parameters used are appropriate for the mid-latitude North Pacific, and the results are relevant to sudden transport changes in the North Pacific Current.  相似文献

Abstract

Dispersion of linear quasigeostrophic plane waves in a stratified ocean with bottom topography is discussed. Particular emphasis is given to cases for which zonal gradients in the sea floor height are important. As such, the relative importance of the topographic and planetary β-effects is strongly dependent on wave vector orientation. The magnitude of the topographic slopes considered is chosen such that these two effects (topographic and planetary β) are of comparable importance. In the interest of simplicity, stratification is taken to be independent of depth. The eigenvalue problem which must be solved to find the free modes of oscillation has already been treated in the literature (in fact, Charney and Flierl (1981) have treated the effects of a more realistic stratification). The aim of this note is to more fully expose, primarily by example, several dispersive properties of these free wave modes which have been largely overlooked.  相似文献

行星波传播理论虽然已有很多研究,但是大多以纬向对称基流为主,无法解释东西风带之间相互作用的事实.鉴于此,本文从理论上系统讨论了纬向对称和水平非均匀基流中定常和非定常波动的传播特征.首先,对纬向对称基流中波动传播的周期特征进行分析后发现,西风中位相东传超长波周期大于30 d,而东风中位相西传超长波的周期则小于30 d.之后,从传播的空间以及周期特征等方面系统研究了水平非均匀基流中球面波动传播理论,得到以下结论:经向基流使得定常波可以穿越东风带,在南北两半球间传播,为东西风带之间的相互作用提供了理论解释;强的经向流使得波动传播具有单向性;亚澳季风区低层纬向1波呈低频特征.  相似文献

Two-layer equatorial primitive equations for the free troposphere in the presence of a thin atmospheric boundary layer and thermal dissipation are developed here. An asymptotic theory for the resonant nonlinear interaction of long equatorial baroclinic and barotropic Rossby waves is derived in the presence of such dissipation. In this model, a self-consistent asymptotic derivation establishes that boundary layer flows are generated by meridional pressure gradients in the lower troposphere and give rise to degenerate equatorial Ekman friction. That is to say, the asymptotic model has the property that the dissipation matrix has one eigenvalue which is nearly zero: therefore the dynamics rapidly dissipates flows with pressure at the base of the troposphere and creates barotropic/baroclinic spin up/spin down. The simplified asymptotic equations for the amplitudes of the dissipative equatorial barotropic and baroclinic waves are studied by linear theory and integrated numerically. The results indicate that although the dissipation slightly weakens the tropics to midlatitude connection, strong localized wave packets are nonetheless able to exchange energy between barotropic and baroclinic waves on intraseasonal timescales in the presence of baroclinic mean shear. Interesting dissipation balanced wave-mean flow states are discovered through numerical simulations. In general, the boundary layer dissipation is very efficient for flows in which the barotropic and baroclinic components are of the same sign at the base of the free troposphere whereas the boundary layer dissipation is less efficient for flows whose barotropic and baroclinic components are of opposite sign at the base of the free troposphere.  相似文献
