To determine the removal of regenerated nitrogen by estuarine sediments, we compared sediment N2 fluxes to the stoichiometry of nutrient and O2 fluxes in cores collected in the Childs River, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The difference between the annual PO4 3− (0.2 mol P m−2 yr−1) and NH4 + (1.6 mol N m−2 yr−1) flux and the Redfield N∶P ratio of 16 suggested an annual deficit of 1.5 mol N m−2 yr−1. Denitrification predicted from O2∶NH4 + flux ratios and measured as N2 flux suggested a nitrogen sink of roughly the same magnitude (1.4 mol N m−2 yr−1). Denitrification accounted for low N∶P ratios of benthic flux and removed 32–37% of nitrogen inputs entering the relatively highly nutrient loaded Childs River, despite a relatively brief residence time for freshwater in this system. Uptake of bottom water nitrate could only supply a fraction of the observed N2 flux. Removal of regenerated nitrogen by denitrification in this system appears to vary seasonally. Denitrification efficiency was inversely correlated with oxygen and ammonium flux and was lowest in summer. We investigated the effect of organic matter on denitrification by simulating phytoplankton deposition to cores incubated in the lab and by deploying chambers on bare and macroaglae covered sediments in the field. Organic matter addition to sediments increased N2 flux and did not alter denitrification efficiency. Increased N2 flux co-varied with O2 and NH4 + fluxes. N2 flux (261±60 μmol m−2 h−1) was lower in chambers deployed on macroalgal beds than deployed on bare sediments (458±70 μmol m−2 h−1), and O2 uptake rate was higher in chambers deployed on macroalgal beds (14.6±2.2 mmol m−2 h−1) than on bare sediments (9.6±1.5 mmol m−2 h−1). Macroalgal cover, which can retain nitrogen in the system, is a link between nutrient loading and denitrification. Decreased denitrification due to increasing macroalgal cover could create a positive feedback because decreasing denitrification would increase nitrogen availability and could increase macroalgae cover.  相似文献

Sediment cores were sampled from Xiamen Western Bay at five sites during the summer and winter of 2006 and Hg–Au microelectrodes were used to make on board measurements of the concentration gradients of dissolved oxygen, Mn2+, and Fe2+ within the sediments. The O2 concentrations decreased sharply from about 200 μmol L−1 in the bottom seawater to zero within a depth of a few millimeters into the sediment. Dissolved Mn2+ was detected below the oxic zones with peak concentrations up to 600 μmol L−1, whereas dissolved Fe2+ had peak concentrations up to 1,000 μmol L−1 in deeper layers. The elemental contents of organic carbon and nitrogen within the sediments were analyzed and their C/N ratios were in the range of 9.0 to 10.1, indicative of heavy terrestrial origin. Sediments from two sites near municipal wastewater discharge outlets had higher organic contents than those from the other sites. These high organic contents corresponded to shallow O2 penetration depths, high dissolved Mn2+ and Fe2+ concentrations, and negative redox potentials within the sediments. This indicated that the high organic matter content had promoted microbial respiration within the sediments. Overall, the organic content did not show any appreciable decrease with increasing sediment depths, so a quadratic polynomial function was used to fit the curve of O2 profiles within the sediments. Based on the O2 profiles, O2 fluxes across the seawater and sediment interface were estimated to be in the range 6.07 to 14.9 mmol m−2 day−1, and organic carbon consumption rates within the surface sediments were estimated to be in the range 3.3 to 20.8 mgC cm−3 a−1. The case demonstrated that biogeochemistry within the sediments of the bay was very sensitive to human activities such as sewage discharge.  相似文献

In an annual cycle from March 2005 to February 2006, benthic nutrient fluxes were measured monthly in the Dongtan intertidal flat within the Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary. Except for NH4^+, there always showed high fluxes from overlying water into sediment for other four nutrients. Sediments in the high and middle marshes, covered with halophyte and consisting of macrofauna, demonstrated more capabilities of assimilating nutrients from overlying water than the low marsh. Sampling seasons and nutrient concentrations in the overlying water could both exert significant effects on these fluxes. Additionally, according to the model provided by previous study, denitrification rates, that utilizing NO3- transported from overlying water (Dw) in Dongtan sediments, were estimated to be from -16 to 193 μmol·h^-1·m^-2 with an average value of 63 μmol·h^-1·m^-2 (n=18). These estimated values are still underestimates of the in-situ rates owing to the lack of consideration of DN, i.e., denitrification supported by the local NO3^- production via nitrification.  相似文献

Quarterly field sampling was conducted to characterize variations in water column and sediment nutrients in a eutrophic southern California estuary with a history of frequent macroalgal blooms. Water column and sediment nutrient measures demonstrated that Upper Newport Bay (UNB) is a highly enriched estuary. High nitrate (NO3 ) loads from the river entered the estuary at all sampling times with a rainy season (winter) maximum estimated at 2,419 mol h−1. This resulted in water NO3 concentration in the estuary near the river mouth at least one order of magnitude above all other sampling locations during every seasons; maximum mean water NO3 concentration was 800 μM during springer 1997. Phosphorus (P)-loading was high year round (5.7–90.4 mol h−1) with no seasonal pattern. Sediment nitrogen (N)-content showed a seasonal pattern with a spring maximum declining through fall. sediment and water nutrients, as well as percent cover of three dominant macroalgae, varied between the main channel and tidal creeks. During all seasons, water column NO3 concentrations were higher in the main channel than in tidal creeks while tidal creeks had higher levels of sediment total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN) and P. During each of the four sampling periods, percent cover ofEntermorpha intestinalis andCeramium spp. was higher in tidal creeks than in the main channel, while percent cover ofUlva expansa was always higher in the main channel. Decreases in sediment N in both creek and channel habitats were concurrent with increases in macroalgal cover, possibly reflecting use of stored sediment TKN by macroalgae. Our data suggest a shift in primary nutrient sources for macroalgae in UNB from riverine input during winter and spring to recycling from sediments duirng summer and fall.  相似文献

We used fine-scale porewater profiles and rate measurements together with a multiple component transport–reaction model to investigate carbon degradation pathways and the coupling between electron and proton transfer reactions in Lake Champlain sediments. We measured porewater profiles of O2, Mn2+, Fe2+, HS, pH and pCO2 at mm resolution by microelectrodes, and profiles of NO3 , SO4 2−, NH4 +, total inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) at cm resolution using standard wet chemical techniques. In addition, sediment–water fluxes of oxygen, DIC, nitrate, ammonium and N2 were measured. Rates of gross and net sulfate reduction were also measured in the sediments. It is shown that organic matter (OM) decomposes via six pathways: oxic respiration (35.2%), denitrification (10.4%), MnO2 reduction (3.6%), FeOOH reduction (9.6%), sulfate reduction (14.9%), and methanogenesis (26.4%). In the lake sediments, about half of the benthic O2 flux is used for aerobic respiration, and the rest is used for the regeneration of other electron acceptors produced during the above diagenetic reactions. There is a strong coupling between O2 usage and Mn2+ oxidation. MnO2 is also an important player in Fe and S cycles and in pH and TA balance. Although nitrate concentrations in the overlying water were low, denitrification becomes a quantitatively important pathway for OM decomposition due to the oxidation of NH4 + to NO3 . Finally, despite its low concentration in freshwater, sulfate is an important electron acceptor due to its high efficiency of internal cycling. This paper also discusses quantitatively the relationship between redox reactions and the porewater pH values. It is demonstrated here that pH and pCO2 are sensitive variables that reflect various oxidation and precipitation reactions in porewater, while DIC and TA profiles provide effective constraints on the rates of various diagenetic reactions.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the feasibility of using direct N2 measurements in an estuary for determination of denitrification. High precision measurements of dinitrogen: argon ratios (N2∶Ar) were made by membrane inlet mass spectrometry on water samples taken along the length of the Chesapeake Bay in July and October 2004. The N2∶Ar ratio in low salinity surface water was elevated relative to air saturation by 0.3–0.5% with no systematic change along the length of the Bay. N2∶Ar in high salinity bottom water exhibited a linear increase in the landward direction along a 144-km longitudinal section. In this section of the Bay covering 20% of the main stem, the bottom water salinity was statistically uniform and the increase in N2∶Ar was in the direction of net residual current flow. The system was analyzed as a capped river with the assumption that N2 entered the water from the underlying sediment where denitrification is known to take place. The rate of denitrification needed to support the measured increase in N2 was calculated using an average residual current velocity and water column depth. The increase in N2 with distance (0.046μmol N l−1 km−1) equated to an average denitrification flux of 73 μmol N m−2 h−1. N2 fluxes determined on sediment cores taken from the source and terminus regions of the delineated water mass were 45±23 and 83±39 μmol N m−2 hr−1, respectively, which were not statistically different from the whole system estimate. The measured change in oxygen concentration within the bottom water was used to estimate nitrogen remineralization and the efficiency of denitrification. Denitrification efficiency (nitrogen denitrified/nitrogen remineralized) was estimated to be in the range of 22–28% for the bottom water sediment system and 30–37% considering the sediment zone alone.  相似文献

We examined the spatial and temporal variability in drift macroalgal abundance in two seagrass dominated estuarine systems on the Texas coast: Redfish Bay (in the Copano-Aransas Estuary) and Lower Laguna Madre. Measurements of benthic macroalgal variability were made in conjunction with a suite of biotic (seagrass biomass, percent cover, blade width and length, shoot density, epiphyte biomass, seagrass blade C:N ratios, and drift macroalgal abundance and composition) and abiotic (inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, chlorophylla, total suspended solids, light attenuation, salinity, temperature, total organic carbon and porewater NH4 +) indicators. All parameters were measured at 30 sites within each estuary semiannually from July 2002 to February 2004. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to examine relationships between drift macroalgal abundance and biotic and abiotic parameters. In both Redfish Bay and Lower Laguna Madre, drift macroalgal distribution was widespread, and during three of four sampling periods, abundance was equal to abovegro und biomass ofThalassia testudinum, the dominant seagrass. Drift macro algal abundance was highly variable within sites, between sites, and between seasons in both estuaries. No significant differences in drift macroalgal abundance were found between Redfish Bay and Lower Laguna Madre. In Redfish Bay, drift macroalgae (90.1±10.2 gm−2) tended to accumulate in bare patches within seagrass beds. In Lower Laguna Madre, drift macroalgae (72.7±10.7 gm−2) tended to accumulate in areas of dense seagrass cover rather than in bare areas. We found no relationship between drift macroalgal abundance and low (<2μM) water column nutrient concentrations, and although several of our measured parameters were related to drift macroalgal abundance, none alone sufficiently explained the variability in abundance noted between the two estuarine systems. The contrasting patterns of macroalgal accumulation between Redrish Bay and Lower Laguna Madre likely reflect differences in water circulation characteristics between the two regions as dictated by local physiography, in cluding the shape and orientation of the lagoons, with seasonal variations in macroalgal abundance related to changes in freshwater inflow and nutrient loading.  相似文献

Activity profiles of excess 210Pb combined with chemical data determined in two sediment cores from Corumbataí River basin, São Paulo State, Brazil, provided new insights into the reconstruction of historical inputs of anthropogenic constituents, contributing to improving management strategies of the hydrological resources in the basin since most of the municipalities extensively utilize the waters of Corumbataí River and tributaries for drinking purposes, among other uses. Excellent significant relationships between loss on ignition (LOI) and organic matter were found for sediments of both analyzed profiles. Silica was found to be inversely related to organic matter at both analyzed profiles: its decrease accompanied an increase in the specific surface of the sediments. This relationship was confirmed by a great number of inverse significant correlations among silica and oxides Na2O, K2O, CaO, MgO, Al2O3, P2O5, Fe2O3, MnO, and TiO2. It was possible to identify the role of organic matter on adsorption of several oxides/elements in the core sediments profiles. Apparent sediment mass accumulation rates corresponding to 224 and 802 mg cm−2 year−1 were obtained, and are compatible with field evidence, indicating a higher value associated with sand mining activities interfering with the natural/normal sedimentation process, due to modifications of the channel drainage.  相似文献

Benthic metabolism and nutrient exchange across the sediment-water interface were examined over an annual cycle at four sites along a freshwater to marine transect in the Parker River-Plum Island Sound estuary in northeastern Massachusetts, U.S. Sediment organic carbon content was highest at the freshwater site (10.3%) and decreased along the salinity gradient to 0.2% in the sandy sediments at the marine end of the estuary. C:N ratios were highest in the mid estuary (23:1) and lowest near the sea (11:1). Chlorophyll a in the surface sediments was high along the entire length of the estuary (39–57 mg chlorophyll a m−2) but especially so in the sandy marine sediments (172 mg chlorophyll a m−2). Chlorophyll a to phaeophytin ratios suggested most chlorophyll is detrital, except at the sandy marine site. Porewater sulfide values varied seasonally and between sites, reflecting both changes in sulfate availability as overlying water salinity changed and sediment metabolism. Patterns of sediment redox potential followed those of sulfide. Porewater profiles of inorganic N and P reflected strong seasonal patterns in remineralization, accumulation, and release. Highest porewater NH4 + values were found in upper and mid estuarine sediments, occasionally exceeding 1 mM N. Porewater nitrate was frequently absent, except in the sandy marine sediments where concentrations of 8 μM were often observed. Annual average respiration was lowest at the marine site (13 mmol O2 m−2 d−1 and 21 mmol TCO2 m−2 d−1) and highest in the mid estuary (130 mmol O2 m−2 d−1 and 170 mmol TCO2 m−2 d−1) where clam densities were also high. N2O and CH4 fluxes were low at all stations throughout the year: Over the course, of a year, sediments varied from being sources to sinks of dissolved organic C and N, with the overall spatial pattern related closely to sediment organic content. There was little correlation between PO4 3− flux and metabolism, which we attribute to geochemical processes. At the two sites having the lowest salinities, PO4 3− flux was directed into the sediments. On average, between 22% and 32% of total system metabolism was attributable to the benthos. The mid estuary site was an exception, as benthic metabolism accounted for 95% of the total, which is attributable to high densities of filter-feeding clams. Benthic remineralization supplied from less than 1% to over 190% of the N requirements and 0% to 21% of the P requirements of primary producers in this system. Estimates of denitrification calculated from stoichiometry of C and N fluxes ranged from 0% for the upper and mid estuary site to 35% for the freshwater site to 100% of sediment organic N remineralization at the marine site. We hypothesize that low values in the upper and mid estuary are attributable to enhanced NH4 + fluxes during summer due to desorption of exchangeable ammonium from rising porewater salinity. NH4 + desorption during summer may be a mechanism that maintains high rates of pelagic primary production at a time of low inorganic N inputs from the watershed.  相似文献

Previous measurements from cool microtidal temperate areas suggest that microphytobenthic incorporation of nitrogen (N) exceeds N removal by denitrification in illuminated shallow-water sediments. The present study investigates if this is true also for fully nontidal sediments in the Baltic Sea., Sediment-water fluxes of inorganic (DIN) and, organic nitrogen (DON) and oxygen, as well as denitrification, were measured in early autumn and spring, in light and dark, at four sites representing different sediment types. All sediments were autotrophic during the daytime both in the autumn and spring. On a 24-h time scale, they were autotrophic in the spring and heterotrophic in early autumn. Sediments funcitoned as sources of DIN and DON during the autumn and sinks during the spring, with DON fluxes dominating or being as important as DIN fluxes. Microphytobenthos (MPB) activity controlled fluxes of both DIN and DON. Significant differences between sites were found, although sediment type (sand or silt) had no consistent effect on the magnitude of MPB production or nutrient fluxes. The clearest effect related to sediment type was found for denitrification, although only in the autumn, with higher rates in silty sediments. Estimated N assimilation by MPB, based on both net primary production (0.7–6.5 mmol N m−2 d−1) and on 80% of gross primary production (1.9–9.4 mmol N m−2 d−1) far exceeded measured rates of denitrification (0.01–0.16 mmol N m−2 d−1). A theoretical calculation showed that MPB may incorporate between 40% and 100% of the remineralized N, while denitrification removes, <5%. MPB assimilation of N appears to be a far more important N consuming process than denitrification in these nontidal, shallow-water sediments.  相似文献

Benthic respiration, sediment–water nutrient fluxes, denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) were measured in the upper section of the Parker River Estuary from 1993 to 2006. This site experiences large changes in salinity over both short and long time scales. Sediment respiration ranged from 6 to 52 mmol m−2 day−1 and was largely controlled by temperature. Nutrient fluxes were dominated by ammonium fluxes, which ranged from a small uptake of −0.3 to an efflux of over 8.2 mmol N m−2 day−1. Ammonium fluxes were most highly correlated with salinity and laboratory experiments demonstrated that ammonium fluxes increased when salinity increased. The seasonal pattern of DNRA closely followed salinity. DNRA rates were extremely low in March, less than 0.1 mmol m−2 day−1, but increased to 2.0 mmol m−2 day−1 in August. In contrast, denitrification rates were inversely related to salinity, ranging from 1 mmol m−2 day−1 during the spring and fall to less than 0.2 mmol m−2 day−1 in late summer. Salinity appears to exert a major control on the nitrogen cycle at this site, and partially decouples sediment ammonium fluxes from organic matter decomposition.  相似文献

In this study rates of oxygen, ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate (NO3 ), nitrite (NO2 ), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, nitrogen (N) fixation, nitrification, and denitrification were compared between two intertidal sites for which there is an abundant global literature, muddy and sandy sediments, and two sites representing the rocky intertidal zone where biogeochemical processes have scarcely been investigated. In almost all sites oxygen production rates greatly exceeded oxygen consumption rates. During daylight, NH4 + and NO3 uptake rates together with ammonification could supply the different N requirements of the primary producer communities at all four sites; N assimilation by benthic or epilithic primary producers was the major process of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) removal; N fixation, nitrification, and denitrification were minor processes in the overall light DIN cycle. At night, distinct DIN cycling processes took place in the four environments, denitrification rates ranged from 9 ± 2 to 360 ± 30 μmol N2 m−2 h−1, accounting for 10–48% of the water column NO3 uptake; nitrification rates varied from 0 to 1712 ± 666 μmol NH4 + m−2 h−1. A conceptual model of N cycle dynamics showed major differences between intertidal sediment and rocky sites in terms of the mean rates of DIN net fluxes and the processes involved, with rocky biofilm showing generally higher fluxes. Of particular significance, the intertidal rocky biofilms released 10 times the amount of N2O produced in intertidal sediments (up to 17 ± 6 μmol N2O m−2 h−1), representing the highest N2O release rates ever recorded for marine systems. The biogeochemical contributions of intertidal rocky substrata to estuarine and coastal processes warrant future detailed investigation.  相似文献

Benthic oxygen, dinitrogen, and nutrient fluxes (NH4+, NO3, and PO43−) were measured monthly during a 1-year period at two locations in Weeks Bay, a shallow (1.4 m) and eutrophic estuary in Alabama. Gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (R), and net ecosystem metabolism were determined from high-frequency dissolved oxygen measurements. Peak water column NO3 (55 μM) and chlorophyll a (138 μg/l) concentrations were measured during spring and fall, respectively. Sediments were a net source of NH4+ (102 μmol m−2 h−1) and PO43− (0.9 μmol m−2 h−1) but a sink for NO3 (−30 μmol m−2 h−1). Benthic N2 fluxes indicated net N fixation (12 μmol N m−2 h−1). Sediment oxygen demand (0.55 g O2 m−2 day−1) accounted for <10% of R (7.3 g O2 m−2 day−1). Despite high GPP rates (4.7 g O2 m−2 day−1), the estuary was net heterotrophic. Benthic regeneration supplied, on average, 7.5% and 4% of primary productivity N and P demands, respectively. These results contrast with the conventional view that benthic regeneration accounts for a large fraction of phytoplankton nutrient demand in shallow estuaries.  相似文献

Streams draining agricultural catchments in loward England commonly have high nitrate concentrations. Laboratory microcosms were used to study nitrogen transformations in the sediment from such a stream. Solutions of either 0.5 mmol dm−3 calcium nitrate or calcium chloride (control) were passed once only over the sediment surface. After 5 days incubation, Eh in the nitrate treatment stabilized at approximately 500 mV at 5 mm below the water/sediment interface, and 285 mV at 10 mmn, whereas in the chloride treatment Eh was −200 mV to −250 mV at all measured depths (5 mm and below). Inorganic N mesurements of the seidment profiles showed that much more ammonium-N was being lost from the nitrate-treated sediment that the control. It was hypothesized that, when nitrate was present in the streamwater, the combined processed of nitrate diffusion and denitrification progressively consumed organic matter, thereby allowing dissolved oxygen to diffuse further into the sediment. A consequence of these processes would be a greater depth of nitrification and hence more ammounium loss. The plausibility of this hypothesis was evaluated by constructing a deterministic model which simulated the nitrate and ammonium profiles from the processes of diffusion, denitrification, nitrification, and ammonification. Kinetic parameters and diffusion impedance factor were determined from independent experiments. This calibrated model provided reasonable simulations of experimental data obtained from an additional experiment, which also showed that peaks in denitrification and nitrification activity were offset from each other by 2–3 mm, and that they migrated down the profile with increasing incubation time.  相似文献

The metabolic rate of individual habitats can differ significantly in their contribution to the total system productivity of estuaries. Changing environmental conditions such as those created by tidal exchange can frequently alter these rates. In an effort to quantify these rate responses, metabolic rates were measured for macroalgal and sediment habitats at different salinities. Microcosms representing the two habitats were incubated at three salinity ranges (high: 25 to 31‰; moderate: 12 to 18‰; and low: 0 to 4‰) and production and respiration rates were estimated. The production rates for both habitats were proportional to the salinity of the water in the incubation, with the lowest metabolic rates associated with the lowest salinity. Average macroalgal habitat net production rates were 879 mg O2 m?2 h?1, 609 mg O2 m?2 h?1, and 451 mg O2 m?2 h?1 at high, moderate, and low salinity treatments, respectively, and the dark respiration rates were ?401 mg O2 m?2 h?1, ?341 mg O2 m?2 h?1, and ?333 mg O2 m?2 h?1. Average sediment habitat net production rates were 60 mg O2 m?2 h?1, 13 mg O2 m?2 h?1 and 10 mg O2 m?2 h?1 and the respiration rates were ?114 mg O2 m?2 h?1, ?55 mg O2 m?2 h?1, and ?31 mg O2 m?2 h?1 at high, moderate, and low salinity treatments. The larger contribution of macroalgal habitats to system metabolism may account for observed diurnal changes in water column oxygen levels in some estuaries. Macroalgal production rates explained 83% of the increase in water column oxygen levels during daylight hours and macroalgal respiration rates explained 65% of the decline in oxygen levels during the night. The contribution of macroalgal metabolism to the system can be influenced by even short-term changes in water column salinity. Environmental processes that alter salinity levels on hourly time scales may moderate the effect of macroalgal metabolism on oxygen levels.  相似文献

Studies of photosynthesis and respiration in the sheet-like green macroalgaUlva lactuca L. have typically made use of cut discs or individual thalli. Because this species accumulates in layered mats in the field, its structure has the potential to significantly alter metabolic rates compared to those measured for a single layer. The effect of biomass layering on photosynthesis and respiration inU. lactuca was assessed by incubating stacks of 1, 2, 4, and 8 thalli across a range of surface irradiance and in the dark. The photosynthesis-irradiance curve for a single thallus was hyperbolic in shape with maximum photosynthetic rates of 16–24.5 mg O2 g?1 dry weight h?1, a photosynthetic efficiency of 0.18 mg O2 g?1 dry weight h?1 (μE m?2 s?1)?1, and dark respiration rates of 0.95–1.2 mg O2 g?1 dry weight h?1. Weight-specific photosynthesis and respiration rates decreased as the amount of layering increased, with rates approximately twice as high in a single layer as for 8 layers. A simple model revealed that the reduced photosynthetic rates were due to attenuation of light through the stack. Each layer ofUlva reduced the light available to the next layer by approximately 55%, and variability in this absorption was directly related to thallus chlorophyll content. Model runs suggested that acclimation of the thalli by changes in chlorophyll content has the potential to reduce some, but not all of the effect of layering. Reduced respiration rates were atributed to the depletion of oxygen from the interstices between the layers. Results were incorporated into a model of anUlva mat, which predicted decreasing rates of weight-specific total mat production with increasing mat thickness as additional layers are added to the bottom of the mat that neither produce nor consume significant amounts of oxygen. The model predicted area-weighted mat production to increase up to a thickness of 10 layers, after which the rate was constant with increasing mat thickness for the same reason. SinceUlva has a tendency to accumulate in layers under natural conditions, these results improve upon metabolic measurements made with single thalli and will be useful for calculations of macroalgal production as well as in ecosystem models in whichUlva is an important primary producer.  相似文献

We measured fluxes of NH4+ and NO3 and δ15N of NH4+, sediment, and porewater NH4+ from incubated sediment cores along a nitrate gradient and in different seasons from Childs River, MA. NH4+ flux was low at the downstream site with the lowest concentration of organic matter (high salinity) but otherwise did not differ along the estuary. The δ15N of regenerated NH4+ ranged from +6.1‰ to +15.3‰ but did not vary significantly with season or salinity; the mean for the entire estuary was +10.4 ± 0.5‰. Based on differences between the δ15N of regenerated NH4+ and sediment, and expected isotopic fractionation due to remineralization, we concluded that nitrification occurred after remineralization of NH4+. Differences between the δ15N of regenerated NH4+ and the δ15N of porewater NH4+ provided further evidence of nitrification. We estimated that 11% to 48% of remineralized NH4+ underwent coupled nitrification–denitrification before release into the water column. In spite of losses to denitrification, NH4+ flux released 1.4 mol N m−2 year−1 to the water column and could provide 42% of phytoplankton nitrogen requirements.  相似文献

An integrated geochemical analysis of the well-exposed Pine Creek, California tungsten skarn deposit has been undertaken to evaluate changes in chemical gradients across various lithologies. Thermodynamic calculations using available experimental and thermodynamic data allow limits to be assigned to the activities of important chemical components in the metasomatic environment. Quantifiable changes in “non-volatile” component activites (CaO, MgO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, WO3) and in fugacities (O2, F2) have been traced across the system. The activities of Al2O3, Fe2O3 and WO3 generally increase from the marble (<102, <10−6, <10−5 respectively), through the outer skarn zone and into the massive garnet skarn (10−1.7±0.3, 10−3.4±0.4, 10−4.8±0.1) While CaO and MgO activities decrease for the same traverse from 10−5 and 10−2.1±1 respectively, to <10−5.7 and <10−3. Calculated oxygen fugacities are 10−23.5+1.0 at T=800 K (527° C), about one log unit below QFM, and more reducing than that required by Mt-Py-Po. The high variance of the garnet-pyroxene-quartz assemblages adds sufficient uncertainty to the calculated activities for individual specimens that only the large-scale trends survive the small-scale scatter. None of the chemical variables emerge as major independent or controlling factors for the mineralogy or phase compositions. Changes in the activity of one component may be offset by compensatory changes in another resulting in an environment that, while different from Pine Creek, could still host scheelite mineralization. Mass balance calculations indicate that the exposed endoskarn cannot have supplied the necessary chemical components to convert the country rock to skarn.  相似文献

We have determined Fe–Mg diffusion coefficients in olivines from different sources (Nanga Parbat, Pakistan and San Carlos, Arizona, USA) at atmospheric pressure as a function of composition, oxygen fugacity (10−5–10−12 Pa) and temperature (700–1200°C) using thin films produced by pulsed laser deposition and RBS to analyze the concentration profiles. We have characterized the nano-scale structure and composition of the thin films annealed at various conditions and shown that the nature of the film (e.g. crystallinity, wetting behavior) depends strongly on the annealing conditions. If these variations are not taken into account in the form of boundary conditions for modeling the diffusion profiles, artifacts would result in the diffusion data. The diffusion coefficients obtained from 75 experiments reveal that (i) between fO2 of 10−5 and 10−10 Pa, diffusion along all three principal crystallographic directions in olivine, [100], [010] and [001], are described by a constant activation energy of ∼200 kJ/mol, precluding any temperature dependence of diffusion anisotropy and change of mechanism of diffusion at temperatures between 950 and 1200°C, (ii) diffusion coefficients increase with oxygen fugacity at fO2 > 10−10 Pa, with an fO2 exponent that lies between 1/4 and 1/7, and (iii) at fO2 below 10−10 Pa, and consequently at temperatures below ∼900°C, diffusion becomes weakly dependent/independent of fO2, indicating a change of diffusion mechanism. Activation energy of diffusion at these conditions is slightly higher, ∼220 kJ/mol. The data, including the change of mechanism, are analyzed in terms of point defect chemistry in Part II of this work to derive an equation that allows calculation of diffusivities in olivine over its entire field of stability. Availability of directly measured data at temperatures down to 700°C imply that for the first time diffusion coefficients can be interpolated, rather than extrapolated, for modeling most natural systems.  相似文献

This paper addresses temporal variability in bottom hypoxia in broad shallow areas of Mobile Bay, Alabama. Time-series data collected in the summer of 2004 from one station (mean depth of 4 m) exhibit bottom dissolved oxygen (DO) variations associated with various time scales of hours to days. Despite a large velocity shear, stratification was strong enough to suppress vertical mixing most of the time. Bottom DO was closely related to the vertical salinity gradient (ΔS). Hypoxia seldom occurred when ΔS (over 2.5 m) was <2 psu and occurred almost all the time when ΔS was >8 psu in the absence of extreme events like hurricanes. Oxygen balance between vertical mixing and total oxygen demand was considered for bottom water from which oxygen demand and diffusive oxygen flux were estimated. The estimated decay rates at 20°C ranging between 0.175–0.322 d−1 and the corresponding oxygen consumption as large as 7.4 g O2 m−2 d−1 fall at the upper limit of previously reported ranges. The diffusive oxygen flux and the corresponding vertical diffusivity estimated for well mixed conditions range between 8.6–9.5 g O2 m−2 d−1 and 2.6–2.9 m2 d−1, respectively. Mobile Bay hypoxia is likely to be associated with a large oxygen demand, supported by both water column and sediment oxygen demands, so that oxygen supply from surface water during destratification events would be quickly exhausted to return to hypoxic conditions within a few hours to days after destratification events are terminated.  相似文献
