The history of research on the Ordovician rocks of Portugal is briefly outlined and the biostratigraphy of different regions is reviewed. Ten stratigraphic columns are presented for selected areas and the lithological and faunal characteristics are described. The trilobites belong to the Selenopeltis province and evidence is given for the recognition of two faunal subprovinces (termed associations by Henry 1980) in north and central Portugal during the Arenig to Llandeilo. The current state of knowledge of Ordovician palaeogeography in Portugal is discussed and maps are presented for the Arenig and Llandeilo Series.  相似文献

The Skiddaw Slates consist of eight formations with the substantial thickness of about 30,000 ft. This geosynclinal sequence is of Arenig age though the highest formation may continue into the Lower Llanvirn. The polyphase tectonics of the Skiddaw Slates and the relationship of the overlying Borrowdale Volcanic Series are discussed. It is concluded that the Caledonian tectonic history of this part of Britain contains two paroxysms of orogenic activity. In addition to the orthodox end-Silurian orogenesis there was also an intra-Lower Ordovician orogenic episode which took place towards the close of the Llanvirn. During the earlier tectonic climax the Skiddaw Slates were deformed by two phases of folding. Their structure is, therefore, largely of pre-Borrowdale age and bears little relation to that of the overlying cover. After this dual deformation the slaty basement was truncated by erosion and is separated from the overlying Borrowdale Volcanic Series by an angular unconformity. Only the end-Silurian folding affects the volcanic superstructure and the younger Lower Palaeozoic sequence.  相似文献

In North Wales, Cruziana semplicata (Salter) is recorded from three otherwise unfossiliferous localities and Teichichnus sp. (Seilacher) and Phycodes circinatum (Richter) are shown to be widely distributed within the lower Arenig (Didymograptus extensus zone) sediments. P. circinatum is also recorded from the otherwise unfossiliferous Upper Pennant Quartzite. From a discussion of the stratigraphic ranges of these trace fossils it is suggested that the rocks of the C. semplicata bearing localites are Upper Cambrian (Ffestiniog) in age while the Upper Pennant Quartzite is Ordovician, probably Arenig.  相似文献

The Variscides of Iberia have a bilateral symmetry with east vergence in the eastern branch and west vergence in the western, on both sides of a Centro-Iberian Zone (CIZ), with predominant steep axial planes. All the structures curve around the Ibero-Armorican Arc (IAA). Unconformities in the sedimentary sequences of Cambrian to Early Ordovician age were ascribed to “Sardic phase” by correlation with similar tectonosedimentary events in Sardinia. Recent studies showed diachronism between these events in Sardinia and Iberia but migration of major geodynamic regime in time may be due to regional variation of major events at plate tectonic scale. We studied in detail two critical areas in the CIZ, the Marão anticline in the NE and the Amêndoa-Carvoeiro synform in the SW. Two unconformities can be put in evidence, as elsewhere in CIZ. A stronger lower unconformity of a Volcano-Sedimentary Complex of Lower Arenig (and Tremadocian?) age on top of a Cambrian clastic sequence with flysch characteristics; and a milder upper unconformity of Armorican Quartzite of Arenig age on both the Volcano-Sedimentary Complex and the Cambrian sequences. The lithostratigraphy of the studied areas is described and correlated with other areas in Iberia. The Volcano-Sedimentary Complex and coeval magmatic bodies with bimodal composition are briefly described. The Sardic event corresponds to folds with steep axial planes at high angles to Variscan structures that produce the penetrative cleavage that cut across the unconformity surfaces. Sardic thrusts are also present and can be explained by thin-skinned compressive tectonics. Sardic folds and thrusts suggest a brief period of transient inversion between a major extensional regime from Cambrian to Devonian. The obliquity of Sardic structures to Variscan compression suggests a component of transpression during the Sardic tectonic event, corresponding to a tectonically enhanced unconformity near the Cambro-Ordovician boundary. The transient Sardic inversion is interpreted in terms of a break-up unconformity related to the migration of an intracratonic rift; in the Ordovician this rift moves into the SW of Ossa Morena Zone (OMZ) and since then become the SW Iberia suture during the Variscan Wilson cycle. This migration induced transient compression and dextral strike-slip in the major boundary between CIZ and OMZ due to presence of incipient primary curvature in this segment of IAA.  相似文献

Stratigraphic and sedimentological investigation of the interglacial succession within the Cryogenian-aged Umberatana Group of the Northern and Central Flinders Ranges reveals a complex array of sedimentary successions lying between the Sturtian and Marinoan glacial deposits. The Sturtian–Marinoan Series boundary was first defined from the Adelaide area at the uppermost contact of the Brighton Limestone. In the Northern Flinders Ranges the Sturtian–Marinoan Series boundary has been positioned at the uppermost contact of the Balcanoona Formation, which is thought to correlate with the Brighton Limestone. In the Northern Flinders Ranges a major unconformity separates the Sturtian and Marinoan-aged sedimentary successions (Nepouie–Upalinna Subgroups). In moderately deep marine depositional settings, this submarine unconformity is located at the base of the Yankaninna Formation where erosion has deeply incised (up to 300 m) into the underlying Tapley Hill Formation. In shallower marine settings the unconformity is found at the base of the Weetootla Dolomite. In very deep water depositional settings this unconformity is not recognised, and the Yankaninna Formation appears to conformably overlie the Tapley Hill Formation suggesting that this erosional feature is restricted to shallow and moderately deep depositional settings. This unconformity presents a regionally persistent chronostratigraphic marker horizon, which reliably marks the Sturtian–Marinoan Series boundary at the base of the Yankaninna Formation from shallow shelfal to deep-water basinal settings throughout the Northern Flinders Ranges. In the Central Flinders Ranges the post-Sturtian glacial stratigraphy records a very similar depositional record to that observed in the Northern Flinders Ranges. In the Central regions the Tapley Hill Formation is overlain by deep-marine carbonates and calcareous shales of the Wockerawirra Dolomite and Sunderland Formations, respectively. The base of the Wockerawirra Dolomite is found to be in erosional contact with the underlying Tapley Hill Formation. This stratigraphic relationship, together with lithological similarities, indicates the Wockerawirra Dolomite and Sunderland Formation of the Central Flinders Ranges are lateral correlatives of the Yankaninna Formation of the Northern Flinders Ranges. The regional nature of the Sturtian–Marinoan unconformity in the Adelaide Geosyncline suggest the possible existence of a glacio-eustatic event that may correlate with glacials/glaciation elsewhere on the Earth during the Cryogenian.  相似文献

The Early Ordovician brachiopods of south-west Wales (Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire) are identified, in most cases for the first time. That period is termed the local Arenig Stage in Britain, but it is now correlated with the Floian, Dapingian, and earlier half of the Darriwilian, which are more recently established international stages in the system of stratigraphical nomenclature. The rocks in south-west Wales were laid down as turbidites in a backarc basin which formed part of the margin of the relatively small independent microcontinent of Avalonia at that time. However, since the Rheic Ocean between Avalonia and the immense Gondwana continent was relatively narrow in the Arenig, the brachiopods reviewed here can be established to be part of the Mediterranean Province, which was also extensive in the higher-latitude sectors in and around Gondwana in the Early Ordovician. The 17 brachiopod species identified within the Arenig brachiopod faunas of south-west Wales are described, including the new species Aporthophyla prisca, Tritoechia bolohaulensis, Skenidoides pontyfennensis and Paurorthis? llangynogensis.  相似文献

Trace fossils are recorded at two localities from the ‘Armorican Quartzite’ (Lower Ordovician) in the Salamanca area, western Spain. Sixteen ichnospecies, belonging to twelve ichnogenera, are described; all ichnospecies occur in the upper part of the unit, only four in the lower part. The ichnogenera comprise Arthrophycus, Cruziana, Daedalus, Didymaulichnus, Diplichnites, Diplocraterion, cf. Gor-. dia, Monomorphichnus, Muensteria, Palaeophycus, Planolites, and Rusophycus. The presence of Cruziana furcifera, C. goldfussi, C. rugosa, and C? cf. imbricata indicate that the upper part of the unit is of Arenig age. The lower part has yielded only the two former ichnospecies and may extend down into the Tremadoc. The species of Cruziana and their stratigraphical significance are discussed.  相似文献

Andesites from northeastern Kanaga Island,Aleutians   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Kanaga island is located in the central Aleutian island arc. Northeastern Kanaga is a currently active late Tertiary to Recent calc-alkaline volcanic complex. Basaltic andesite to andesite lavas record three episodes (series) of volcanic activity. Series I and Series II lavas are all andesite while Series III lavas are basaltic andesite to andesite. Four Series II andesites contain abundant quenched magmatic inclusions ranging in composition from high-MgO low-alumina basalt to low-MgO highalumina basalt. The spectrum of lava compositions is due primarily to fractional crystallization of a parental low-MgO high-alumina basalt but with variable degrees of crustal contamination and magma mixing. The earliest Series I lavas represent mixing between high-alumina basalt and silicic andesite with maximum SiO2 contents of 65–67 wt %. Later Series I and all Series II lavas are due to mixing of andesite magmas of similar composition. The maximum SiO2 content of the pre-mixed andesites magmas is estimated at 60–63 wt %. The youngest lavas (Series III) are all non-mixed and have maximum estimated SiO2 contents of 59 wt %. The earliest Series I lavas contain a significant crustal component while all later lavas do not. It is concluded that the maximum SiO2 contents of silicic magmas, the contribution of crustal material to silicic magma generation, and the role of magma mixing all decrease with time. Furthermore, silicic magmas generated by fractional crystallization at this volcanic center have a maximum SiO2 content of 63 wt %. All of these features have also been documented at the central Aleutian Cold Bay Volcanic Center (Brophy 1987). Based on data from these two centers a model of Aleutian calc-alkaline magma chamber development is proposed. The main features are: (1) a single low pressure magma chamber is continuously supplied by primitive low-alumina basalt; (2) non-primary high-alumina basalt is formed along the chamber margins by selective gravitational settling of olivine and clinopyroxene and retention of plagioclase; (3) sidewall crystallization accompanied by crustal melting produces buoyant silicic (>63 wt % SiO2) liquids that pond at the top of the chamber, and; (4) continued sidewall crystallization, now isolated from the chamber wall, produces silicic liquids with 63 wt % SiO2 that increase the thickness and lowers the overall SiO2 content of the upper silicic zone. It is suggested that the maximum SiO2 content of 63% imposed on fractionation-generated magmas is due to a rheological barrier that prohibits the extraction of more silicic liquids from a crystal-liquid mush along the chamber wall.  相似文献

Much of South Australia, western New South Wales, and Tasmania was affected by the Late Cambrian‐Early Ordovician Delamerian Orogeny. Areas of the former shelf margin exhibit molasse‐type conglomerates overlying a major late Middle to Late Cambrian unconformity (Jukesian Movement in Tasmania or Mootwingee Movement in western N.S.W.). In continental platform areas to the north the effects of the orogeny were less intense with, in the Georgina Basin for instance, only dis‐conformable relationships, and the overlying deposits consisting of fine elastics and carbonates. Regression accompanied this first phase of tectonic upheaval and was followed by a period of ‘late Tremadoc’ transgression of the sea into several embayment areas of the continental platform. This short‐lived transgression was succeeded by ‘early Arenig’ regression which appears to be related to a second, less intense Delamerian orogenic phase. Expression of this phase ranges from unconformity in west Tasmania (Haulage and Lynchford Movements) to disconformity in the Georgina Basin (Kelly Creek Movement).

A second, more extensive and long‐lived transgression of the sea from the ‘middle Arenig’ to about the end of the ‘Llanvirn’ resulted in the development of the epicontinental Larapintine Sea, permitting interchange of warmer and cooler waters from either ends of the seaway. Combined fossil, lithological and palaeomagnetic evidence suggests that, of the fragments of Gondwanaland, Australia alone straddled the Ordovician equator, with its present west coast approximately along the line of Lat. 30°S. Influxes of sand from the areas of mild‐high relief to the south appear to have been deflected in an anticlockwise direction along the open, ocean‐facing Gnalta Shelf of western N.S.W. towards the eastern end of the Larapintine Sea perhaps as a result of a major westward‐flowing equatorial current. The influxes progressively constricted and finally blocked off the eastern end of the seaway by the end of ‘Llanvirn’ time. The closure, and final regression of the sea from all continental platform areas, seems to have been accompanied by a phase of local uplift and erosion (Dullingari Movement of northeastern South Australia). In cratonic areas of central and northern Australia a period of Late Ordovician or Early Silurian uplift and erosion (Rodingan Movement) followed. Dullingari and Rodingan Movements may be correlated with phases of the Benambran Orogeny of the Tas‐man Geosyncline.

Late Ordovician cratonic sedimentation was restricted to the shelf margin. On the Tasmanian Shelf carbonates accumulated during a long period of relative tectonic quiescence and gentle subsidence. First signs of onset of the Benambrian Orogeny are shown by the appearance of clastics in the topmost beds of the Tasmanian Ordovician sequence.  相似文献

Pendent didymograptid graptolites are described from mudstones immediately overlying the Hen-dy-capel ironstone (St. Tudwal's Peninsula, Lly̌n, North Wales). The graptolites indicate a Llanvirn age for these beds, implying a Llanvirn or Arenig age for the ironstone, in contrast with the previous interpretation of a gracilis Biozone age. The redating of the ironstone horizon suggests that the Pen-y-gaer mudstones may be at the base of the local Nant Ffrancon Formation, rather than being equivalent to the lower Caradoc Tyddyn Dicwm beds above the Tremadog ironstone as widely supposed. The ironstones at Trefor, Betws Garmon, and Llandegai, which have been correlated with the Hen-dy-capel ironstone on the basis of acritarch assemblages, may also have a similar age. A reinterpretation of the age of these localities as Llanvirn would remove the stratigraphic problems introduced by their previously suggested early gracilis Biozone age. The Hen-dy-capel ironstone forms one of a large number of ironstones recorded from close to the Arenig-Llanvirn boundary in N. Wales, and elsewhere at high southern palaeolatitudes.  相似文献

The Quaternary System is under threat of extinction as a chronostratigraphic unit in the international Geological Time Scale. In its place, the Neogene System (previously comprising Miocene and Pliocene Series), is to be extended to include the Pleistocene and Holocene Series. It may be possible to “save” the Quaternary by defining it as a Subsystem of the Neogene. In doing so, it would be an opportune time to extend the base of the Quaternary to 2.6 Ma to encompass the time during which (1) Earth's climate has been strongly influenced by bi-polar glaciation, and (2) the genus Homo first appeared and evolved.  相似文献

The Lower Paleozoic rock-units in the Eastern Mediterranean can be separated into two distinct zones: the Northern Zone (Carpathian-Balkan, Istanbul, Zonguldak and Main Range terranes) and the Southern Zone (Tauride-Anatolide, SE Anatolian-Arabian, and Central Iranian terranes). A Gondwanan /Perigondwanan origin can only be properly indicated for the Southern Zone, whereas the Early Paleozoic paleogeographic positions of smaller terranes (e.g. Istanbul Terrane) of the Northern Zone remains questionable.During the Infracambrian-Early Cambrian time in the Southern Zone, the Pan-African consolidated NW Gondwanan pericratonic margin was rifted by back-arc extension or transtension, which is represented by the deposition of fault-controlled continental sediments. The late Early Cambrian-Late Cambrian period in the Southern Zone is designated by a regional transgression from northeast suggesting a rapid subsidence in the area to the northwest of Arabian-Tauride platform and hence opening of a relatively deep basin to the north. The Lower Ordovician in the Southern Zone comprising the Tremadoc and Arenig Series is characterized by a monotonous siliciclastic deposition. Towards the end of Early Ordovician shallowing upward sequences and formation of NW-SE trending highs were noticed. The stratigraphic hiatuses, unconformities and irregular distribution of the Caradoc-Ashgill deposits in the Southern Zone has been ascribed to glacio-eustatic sea-level changes. The Early Silurian (Aeronian-Telychian) deepening and deposition of black shales that follows the regression around the Ordovician-Silurian boundary in the Southern Zone is also very probably related to the relatively rapid global sea-level rise. To the north of the Tauride-Anatolide Platform, Wenlock and Late Silurian are represented by deep marine (basinal) sediments with oceanic basalts. The generation of an accretionary complex in the northern margin of the Taurides together with the regional regression in the southern Taurides and SE Anatolia at the uppermost Silurian-Lower Devonian boundary and the regional unconformity at Lower Devonian (Middle Lochkovian) is very probably related to the closure of a “Paleotethyan” oceanic basin to the north of the Perigondwanan terranes.  相似文献

The base of the Clun Forest Formation at Clun, Shropshire, has previously been taken to correlate with the base of the Downton Castle Sandstone Formation (Přídolí Series, upper Silurian) on the basis of brachiopod, bivalve, gastropod and ostracod faunas. The detailed distribution of microfossils (acritarchs, chitinozoans, conodonts and ostracods) is documented at Nantyrhynau Quarry, Clun, Shropshire, to test this correlation. Three new species of chitinozoans, Eisenackitina clunensis, Eisenackitina kerria and Angochitina paucispinosa, are described from the quarry. Macrofossil and ostracod distributions suggest that the correlation is correct. However, a typical Ludlow acritarch flora is present throughout the section and suggests that the basal part of the Clun Forest Formation is Ludlow in age. The mixture of characteristic Ludlow and Přídolí microfossils at Nantyrhynau Quarry may be the result of differing environmental conditions between the Ludlow (shelf) and Clun (basinal) areas at this time. Alternatively, the strata exposed at Nantyrhynau Quarry may represent a period towards the end of the Ludlow Series when there are no strata represented in corresponding shelf sections due to non-deposition or erosion. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We report two new three-dimensionally phosphatized microfossils, Cambrolongispina reticulata gen. et sp. nov. and Cambrolongispina glabra gen. et sp. nov., from the middle Cambrian (Series 3, Drumian Stage) at Wangcun, Yongshun County, western Hunan, South China. They are bivalved arthropods, with thin, pliable, originally chitinous or chitin-calcareous shields (c. 350-517 I1 m long). The shields are equipped with a pair of antero-dorsal spines. The spines are internally hollow, varying in length from 1/2 of to as long as the shield length in C. reticulata, and uniformly longer than the shield length in C. glabra. The spines of C. reticulata are ornamented with a longitudinal row of conical or blade-shaped denticles along the posterior edge. Cambrolongispina lacks marginal rims, valve lobation and sulci which are diagnostic of the Bradoriida sensu stricto. It also lacks a donblure/duplicature characteristic of phosphatocopids and some bradoriids. It could be related to the Monasteriidae (which may belong to Bradoriida sensu lato), both characterized by a pair of antero-dorsal spines. Cambrolongispina may have been meiofaunai detritus feeders that lived on or within sediments. The antero-dorsal spines may have been sensory organs to detect nearby predators. The posterior denticles on these spines might have facilitated the sensory function of the spines.

The trilobite Colpocoryphe sp. is described for the first time from the Kirkland Formation, Llanvirn, of the Skiddaw Group in the Cross Fell inlier. It is considered to be closely related to a form previously recorded from the upper Arenig of the Lake District. This new record supports the previously suggested Gondwanan aspects of the northern England Avalonian fauna during the early Ordovician. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The 26 November 2005 Jiujiang-Ruichang, Jiangxi, Ms?5.7 earthquake occurred in a seismotectonic setting of moderate earthquake. The northwest-trending Xiangfan-Guangji fault (XFG) does not enter into the epicenter vicinity, but the northeast-trending Ruichang-Wuning fault (RWF) as a regional fault extends to the epicenter nearby, appearing as the Ruichang basin and its marginal faults. Tilting of the Ruichang Basin (RCB) in the Quaternary was controlled by the RCB southeast-marginal, buried fault (RSMBF). Shallow geophysical survey reveals that the RSMBF caused an offset of the reflection layers. Drill hole columnar section demonstrates that there are about 10–12?m displacement in the lower section of the middle-Pleistocene Series along the RSMBF, but no disruption is found in the upper section of the middle-Pleistocene Series. The RSMBF not only has activity in the Quaternary, but also coincides with the nodal plane I from the focal mechanism of the Jiujiang-Ruichang Ms?5.7 earthquake. This evidence, including aftershock distribution and isoseismic lines, strongly suggests that the RSMBF might be the seismogenic tectonics. The RWF is discontinuous at the surface, and consists of three en echelon Quaternary basins, which are the Ruichang, Fanzhen and Wuning basins. Three moderate earthquakes, the Fanzhen ML?4.9 earthquake, the Yejiapu ML?4.1 earthquake and the Jiujiang-Ruichang Ms?5.7 earthquake, have happened in the basins since 1995. The seismogenic tectonics of the Jiujiang-Ruichang Ms?5.7 earthquake is not isolated, but may be controlled by the RWF at depth, the slip of which causes the accumulation of energy for earthquake occurrence.  相似文献
