An analysis is made of the coupled lateral-torsional response of a partially symmetric single-storey building model to horizontal translatory earthquake excitation. Interest centres on the evaluation of realistic estimates for two equivalent static actions (a shear and a torque) which account for the worst dynamic consequences of torsional unbalance. The results substantiate the findings of previous investigations which have given rise to the belief that strong modal coupling and severely coupled lateral and torsional responses are possible even in nominally symmetric buildings. The response of the model is assumed to be linearly elastic and viscously damped. In a preliminary analysis the equations of motion are solved using the modal analysis technique and the conditions necessary for full modal coupling are ascertained. Then by employing the design spectrum concept, together with suitably conservative procedures for combining the modal maxima, dimensionless forms of the equivalent static actions are evaluated as functions of two independent parameters. The final results are furnished by modified square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) combination functions which take account of the spacing between the translational and torsional frequencies. Examples at the end of the paper illustrate the practical significance of the work.  相似文献

A study is made of the effect of soil-structure interaction on the coupled lateral and torsional responses of asymmetric buildings subjected to a series of historical free-field earthquake base motions. It sh shown that for particular classes of actual buildings the equivalent rigid-base responses are significantly increased for structures founded on medium-stiff soils, and hence the assumption of the major building codes that a conservative estimate of response is obtained by considering the structure to be fixed rigidly at its base is shown to be inconsistent with the presented dynamic results. It is shown that foundation interaction produces greatest amplification of torsional coupling effects for structures subjected to a particular class of European strong-motion earthquake records, identified by similarities in their spectral shape, for which the vibrational energy of the ground motion is distributed approximately uniformly over the range of frequencies which are of interest for real structures. It is recommended that provision be made in the torsional design procedures of building codes for the increase in the coupled torsional response due to soil-structure interaction as indicated in this study. Such provision should be based on the results of comprehensive parametric studies employing a wide selection of earthquake records and accounting for expected variations in localized soil conditions.  相似文献

Presented in this paper is a detailed parametric study of the coupled lateral and torsional response of single-storey building models subjected to earthquake base loadings. The aim is to assess the influence of torsional coupling on the elastic responses of buildings subjected to transient ground motion records, and to make comparisons with current code provisions which make allowance for coupling effects by means of empirical design procedures. The study of building responses to selected earthquake excitations shows that the qualitative effects of the controlling parameters on the maximum translational and torsional responses of the coupled system are similar to those observed in analyses using idealized response spectra to represent the input ground motion. It is also demonstrated that for particular ranges of the key parameters defining the structural system, typical of the properties of many actual buildings, torsional coupling induces significant amplification of earthquake forces. This amplification is shown to be inadequately accounted for in the current design provisions of major building codes. Recommendations for improving existing design practice for asymmetric structures are outlined.  相似文献

This paper presents results of an analytical study of the inelastic earthquake torsional response of a class of setback frame buildings. In the first part of the study, the modal response spectrum analysis procedure is utilized to determine the yielding strengths of structural members in an idealized but representative setback frame building model. Results are then presented for the inelastic dynamic response of this setback building model subjected to an ensemble of six earthquake ground motions. The results indicate that the modal response spectrum analysis procedure is inadequate for preventing excessive response leading to concentration of damage in vulnerable structural members, such as those in the tower near the notch and those in the base (the part of the structure below the tower) near the perimeter at the opposite side of the tower. The second part of the study develops a modified equivalent static force procedure for strength design of such setback frame buildings. Response analyses show that the proposed procedure results in improved and satisfactory inelastic performance of the selected class of setback frame buildings, having a wide range of realistic configurations.  相似文献

An effective procedure is summarized without derivation for estimating the maximum response of a class of torsionally-coupled, multi-storey buildings due to earthquake ground motion characterized by response spectra. The analysis procedure is shown to be efficient and to provide insight into torsional coupling effects because the maximum response of such a torsionally-coupled, N-storey building in its njth mode of vibration is determined exactly by analysing (i) the response in the jth vibration mode (j = 1,2, N) of the corresponding torsionally-uncoupled, N-storey system; and (ii) the response in the nth vibration mode (n = 1, 2 for a one-way symmetric plan) of an associated torsionally-coupled, one-storey system. It is also demonstrated that an earlier, simpler approach in which the total (considering all vibration modes) response of the building is determined from the total response of the two simpler systems is strictly valid only under restrictive conditions, which are identified, but the simpler approach leads to results that are accurate to a useful degree.  相似文献

Damage assessments after past earthquakes have frequently revealed that plan configuration irregular buildings have more severe damage due to excessive torsional responses and stress concentration than regular buildings. The plan configuration irregularities introduce major challenges in the seismic design of buildings. One such form of irregularity is the presence of re-entrant corners in the L-shaped buildings that causes stress concentration due to sudden changes in stiffness and torsional response amplification; hence causes early collapse. A constructive research into re-entrant corner and torsional irregularity problems is essentially needed greater than ever. Therefore, the focus of this study is to investigate structural seismic response demands for the class of L-shaped buildings through evaluating the plan configuration irregularity of re-entrant corners and lateral–torsion coupling effects on measured seismic response demands. The measured responses include story drift, inter-story drift, story shear force, overturning moment, torsion moment at the base and over building height, and torsional irregularity ratio. Three dimensional finite element model for nine stories symmetric buildings as reference model is developed. In addition, six L-shaped building models are formulated with gradual reduction in the plan of the reference building model. The results prove that building models with high irregularity are more vulnerable due to the stress concentration and lateral torsional coupling behavior than that with regular buildings. In addition, the related lateral shear forces in vertical resisting elements located on the periphery of the L-shaped buildings could be significantly increased in comparison with the corresponding values for a symmetric building.  相似文献

A series of parametrically defined experimental model structures has been tested under earthquake base loading using the SERC national U.K. earthquake simulator. The models have been designed with variable ratios of torsional to lateral stiffness, and with both symmetric and asymmetric mass distributions. This paper first describes the tests carried out to determine the basic dynamic model properties and the establishment of idealized analytical models which give accurate predictions of model behaviour under steady-state loading and free-vibration conditions. Secondly, a detailed discussion is made of the two highly coupled structural models having uncoupled torsional to lateral frequency ratio Rf = 1.2, commenting on the ability of the modal analysis procedures to predict accurately the maximum recorded responses. It is concluded that the theory underestimates the significance of the fundamental torsional mode of vibration in the combined structural response, and overestimates the contribution of the first lateral mode. These effects compensate each other on the side of the structure which is most severely affected by torsional response, but produce large inaccuracies on the side of the building which is commonly assumed to be affected beneficially by torsional coupling.  相似文献

A scheme is proposed to calculate the effect of torsion on each lateral load resisting element of asymmetrical buildings in the context of the response spectrum technique. The scheme consists of: (i) Obtain the modal shear and torque on the building by the response spectrum technique, (ii) Compute the total modal shear forces on each frame by resolving the modal shear and torque on the building according to principles of structural mechanics. The shears on each frame due to the lateral load effect and torsional effect are combined algebraically, (iii) Obtain the total shear force on each frame by combining the total modal shears on that frame in a root sum square manner. Since the proper phase relationship between the lateral load effect and torsional effect is accounted for on a modal basis, it is believed that the proposed scheme provides a more realistic load estimate on the frames than the conventional approach. An example of a simplified mono-symmetrical frame structure is chosen to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed scheme, using dynamic time-history analysis as a standard for comparison.  相似文献

Computational algorithms based on the pseudo-force method (PFM) and the tangent spectrum method (TSM) for the seismic analysis of elasto-plastic MDOF structures by mode superposition are presented. The emphasis is put on the effect of the truncation of higher modes on the convergence of the ductility demand and energy dissipated during the earthquake. Eigenvectors and load-dependent vectors have been used in comparative analyses. Applications on a flexible 25-storey building and a stiff, 5-storey shear building indicate that, for a flexible structure, the ductility demand computed from the PFM is more sensitive to basis truncation than that computed from the TSM. However, for the stiff structure, the opposite behaviour is observed. The results indicate that the use of load-dependent vectors in inelastic analyses maintains the computational advantages found for elastic analyses in previous investigations. Although the PFM is more stable and computationally more effective than the TSM, it does not provide any information on the evolution of tangent modal properties in time that reflects dynamic response modification as the structure becomes inelastic.  相似文献

A pushover procedure with a load pattern based on the height-wise distribution of the combined modal story shear and torsional moment is proposed to estimate the seismic response of 3D asymmetric-plan building frames. Contribution of the higher modes and torsional response of asymmetric-plan buildings are incorporated into the proposed load pattern. The proposed pushover method is a single-run procedure, which enables tracing the nonlinear response of the structure during the analysis and averts the elusiveness of conducting multiple pushover analyses. The proposed method has been used to estimate the response of two moment-resisting building frames with 9 and 20 stories. The obtained results indicate the appropriate accuracy and efficiency of the proposed procedure in estimating the trend of the drift profiles of the structures resulted from nonlinear time history analyses.  相似文献

A formulation and solution of the multiple-degree-of-freedom equations of motion for pounding between two multistorey buildings are presented. Pounding occurs at rigid horizontal diaphragms in each building. The theory is implemented into a microcomputer program and sample earthquake analyses involving pounding between 15-storey and 8-storey buildings are performed. The influence of building separation, relative mass, and contact location properties are assessed. Conclusions are drawn regarding response behaviour trends that are relevant to other actual pounding situations.  相似文献

This paper presents an efficient procedure to determine the natural frequencies, modal damping ratios and mode shapes for torsionally coupled shear buildings using earthquake response records. It is shown that the responses recorded at the top and first floor levels are sufficient to identify the dominant modal properties of a multistoried torsionally coupled shear building with uniform mass and constant eccentricity even when the input excitation is not known. The procedure applies eigenrealization algorithm to generate the state‐space model of the structure using the cross‐correlations among the measured responses. The dynamic characteristics of the structure are determined from the state‐space realization matrices. Since the mode shapes are obtained only at the instrumented floor (top and first floors) levels, a new mode shape interpolation technique has been proposed to estimate the mode shape coefficients at the remaining floor levels. The application of the procedure has been demonstrated through a numerical experiment on an eight‐storied torsionally coupled shear building subjected to earthquake base excitation. The results show that the proposed parameter identification technique is capable of identifying dominant modal parameters and responses even with significant noise contamination of the response records. The effectiveness of the design recommendations made by various major building codes to account for torsional coupling effects is evaluated with respect to the parametric responses to earthquake ground motion of a simple single-storey asymmetric building model supported on an elastic foundation. The objectives are to determine the extent to which the response trends observed in previous studies of asymmetric rigidly based buildings are affected by changes in the flexibility of the foundation medium and to comment on and suggest necessary amendments to the design recommendations in order that suitable allowance be made for the resultant changes in the magnitude of torsional coupling effects. It is concluded that whilst the qualitative effects of torsional coupling are not affected by soil–structure interaction, their magnitude depends significantly on the frequency content of the free-field motion. The response to the El Centro earthquake record is conservatively accounted for by assuming the structure to be supported on a rigid foundation. An allowance for increased response effects due to soil–structure interaction is suggested for incorporation in the torsional design recommendations when European earthquake records are employed.  相似文献

Seismic building codes include design provisions to account for the torsional effects arising in torsionally unbalanced (asymmetric) buildings. These provisions are based on two alternative analytical procedures for determining the design load for the individual resisting structural elements. A previous study has shown that the linear elastic modal analysis procedure may not lead to conservative designs, even for multistorey buildings with regular asymmetry, when such structures are excited well into the inelastic range of response. The equivalent static force procedure as recommended by codes may also be deficient in accounting for additional ductility demand in the critical stiff-edge elements. This paper addresses the non-conservatism of existing static torsional provisions and examines aspects of element strength distribution and its influence on inelastic torsional effects. A recommendation is made for improving the effectiveness of the code-type static force procedure for torsionally unbalanced multistorey frame buildings with regular asymmetry, leading to a design approach which estimates conservatively the peak ductility demand of edge elements on both sides of the building. The modified approach also retains the simplicity of existing code provisions and results in acceptable levels of additional lateral design strength. It has recently been adopted by the new Australian earthquake code, which is due to be implemented early in 1993.  相似文献

The drift pushover analysis method for tall and regular buildings is extended in this paper to the third dimension. The focus of study is on the structures with important torsional response. For this purpose, 10, 15, 20 and 30-story steel moment frame buildings having unsymmetrical plans with 5–30% eccentricity ratios are studied. For evaluation of accuracy, nonlinear dynamic response of the buildings is determined under a consistent suit of earthquake ground motions. The maxima of the story drifts and shears and cumulative plastic hinge rotations of stories are calculated under the ground motions and their averages along with those of the modal pushover procedure are compared with the results of the presented method. The comparative analysis establishes the good accuracy of the three dimensional drift pushover method.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the free vibrations of a restricted class of multi-storey shear buildings in which inertial coupling exists between the torsional and the two sway vibrations. The restrictions imposed are that (a) the shear centres of all storeys lie on a vertical straight line, (b) the principal axes of shear are in the same directions in all storeys, (c) the centres of mass of all floors lie on another vertical straight line, (d) the radius of gyration about the shear centre of every floor mass is the same and (e) the ratios of the two shear stiffnesses to the torsional stiffness do not vary from storey to storey. In consequence of the last restriction it is proved that the 3n natural frequencies, normal modes and generalized masses, where n is the number of storeys, are expressible very simply in terms of products of the three natural frequencies, normal modes and generalized masses of the single-storey, three-dimensional building formed by removing everything above the first floor, with the n natural frequencies, normal modes and generalized masses of a certain n-storey, two-dimensional shear frame. In the special case of a uniform building, a simple closed form solution, valid for any number of storeys, is given.  相似文献

Based on an asymmetric multistorey frame building model, this paper investigates the influence of a building's higher vibration modes on its inelastic torsional response and evaluates the adequacy of the provisions of current seismic building codes and the modal analysis procedure in accounting for increased ductility demand in frames situated at or near the stiff edge of such buildings. It is concluded that the influence of higher vibration modes on the response of the upper-storey columns of stiff-edge frames increases significantly with the building's fundamental uncoupled lateral period and the magnitude of the stiffness eccentricity. The application of the equivalent static torsional provisions of certain building codes may lead to non-conservative estimates of the peak ductility demand, particularly for structures with large stiffness eccentricity. In these cases, the critical elements are vulnerable to excessive additional ductility demand and, hence, may be subject to significantly more severe structural damage than in corresponding symmetric buildings. It is found that regularly asymmetric buildings excited well into the inelastic range may not be conservatively designed using linear elastic modal analysis theory. Particular caution is required when applying this method to the design of stiff-edge frame elements in highly asymmetric structures.  相似文献
