The spectrum of the solar corona obtained during the eclipse of 7 March, 1970 has been studied. From the analysis of the line halfwidths it is concluded that the emission of coronal lines of various groups arises in different volumes of the corona. The lines 5303 and 4231 are analyzed in detail and by the use of the equations of excitation and ionization balance. The distribution of electron temperature T e and density n e vs height in the solar corona has been found. The usually adopted n e and T e are noticeably less than those values obtained in present analysis. This discrepancy may be due to the fact that the considered area of the corona seems to be in an unusual condition.  相似文献

The processes by which streams of charged particles become charge and current neutralized in the corona are investigated. It is shown that a large amplitude plasma wave, which is related to precursor phenomenon in type III bursts and possibly plasma radiation from type IV bursts, will be excited at the head of the stream. The energy extracted from the stream to produce this plasma wave is computed and used to set conservative upper limits on the densities of possible excitors for type III bursts. For electron streams the density n s < 10–5 n e, where n e is the density of the background plasma. For proton streams n s < 1.8 × 10–2 n e. The energy extracted from the stream is also used to set upper limits on the lifetimes of relativistic electrons stored in the corona and it is concluded that for n e > 102 cm–3 this loss must be taken into account. Since electron streams cannot produce their own stabilizing ionacoustic waves because they would violate the condition n s < 10–5 n e, other mechanisms for producing ion-acoustic waves in the corona are examined. Another stabilization mechanism due to velocity inhomogeneity is investigated. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Direct images of the Sun were photographed in continuum emission centered at 6900 Å by the jumping film method near the second contact of the Mexico eclipse on 7 March 1970. The band width was 150 Å defined by a combination of a sharp cut filter and KODAK IV F film. The intensity distribution of the solar outer layers obtained shows a steep decrease by a factor of 0.9 in logarithmic units around 2500 km. This is interpreted as the boundary of the chromosphere and corona. Spicules observed at 3500 km are explained by log n e = 11.25 and T e 6000 K. Discussions are made in relation to the other observations and some chromosphere models.  相似文献

We present two-dimensional observations of the quiet Sun at 73.8, 50.0, and 38.5 MHz obtained with the Clark Lake Radioheliograph during the sunspot minimum period of September 1986. The observed peak brightness temperatures during the entire period of sunspot minimum are found to be extremely low, lying in the range (0.6 × 105 K – 2.5 × 105 K). It is shown that these low values cannot be explained by the generally adopted models for N e and T e in a homogeneous corona. The effect of scattering by random density fluctuations is introduced in order to decrease the values of predicted T b . The value of peak T b is computed as a function of relative r.m.s. density fluctuations = <N e >/N e ; and it is found that should be in the range from 0.07 to 0.19, 0.1 to 0.25, and 0.15 to 0.35, respectively, at 38.5, 50.0, and 73.8 MHz, respectively, to explain the observed low brightness temperatures. On leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, India.  相似文献

The Sacramento Peak Observatory's 40 cm coronagraph was used with an emission line photometer to observe the distribution of 5303 Fe XIV brightness as a function of position angle, height above the limb, and time. These data were used to construct models of the volume emissivity as a function of solar latitude and longitude. These models in turn yield estimates of the distribution of electron density in the lower solar corona as a function of latitude and longitude for several specific periods in 1973 and 1975. Three observational results are obtained. An upper limit for the inferred electron density in coronal hole regions is set at log N e = 7.4 for an altitude of 1.15R . Density models from late 1973 demonstrate an evolutionary trend toward a rather regular four-lobed appearance of coronal material; models from 1975 suggest that this characterization persisted for at least 27 solar rotations. A decrease in the total integrated 5303 intensity of a factor of 2.9 is inferred to have taken place between 1973 and 1975.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Mean density models of the solar corona show evidence for two distinctive density regimes characterized by different density gradients. High density gradients are identified with regions of predominantly open magnetic lines of force and low density gradients are identified with regions of predominantly closed magnetic lines of force. Spectroscopic data yielding equivalent widths of forbidden lines of Fe x and Fe xiv strongly suggest that the coronal temperature for r > 2.5 R decreases considerably less rapidly in equatorial regions than r –2/7, which is the decrease predicted by conduction models with open field lines. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Using slab model atmospheres that are irradiated from both sides by photospheric, chromospheric, and coronal radiation fields we have determined the ionization and excitation equilibrium for hydrogen. The model atom consists of two bound levels (n = 1 and n = 2) and a continuum. Ly- was assumed to be optically thick with the transition in detailed radiative balance. The Balmer continuum was assumed to be optically thin with the associated radiative ionization dominated by the photospheric radiation field (T rad = 5940 K). The ionization equilibrium was determined from an exact treatment of the radiative transfer problem for the internally generated Ly-c field and the impressed chromospheric and coronal field (characterized by T rad = 6500K).Our calculations corroborate the hypothesis that N2, the n = 2 population density, is uniquely determined by the electron density N e. We also present ionization curves for 6000K, 7500K, and 10000K models ranging in total hydrogen density from 1 × 1010/cm3 to 3 × 1012/cm3. Using these curves it is possible to obtain the total hydrogen density from the n = 2 population density in prominences and spicules. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Multi-telescope observations of the coronal transient of 15–16 April, 1980 provide simultaneous data from the Solar Maximum Mission Coronagraph/Polarimeter, the Solwind Coronagraph, and the new Emission Line Coronagraph of the Sacramento Peak Observatory. An eruptive prominence-associated white light transient is for the first time seen as an unusual wave or brightening in Fe x gl6374 (but not in Fe xiv gl5303). Several interpretations of this fleeting enhancement are offered. The prominence shows a slowly increasing acceleration which peaks at the time of the Fe event. The white light loop transient surrounding the prominence expands at a well-documented constant speed to 10R , with an extrapolated start time at zero height coincident with the surface activity. This loop transient exemplifies those seen above 1.7R in that leading the disturbance is a bright (N e-enhanced) loop rather than dark. This is consistent with a report of the behavior of another eruptive event observed by Fisher and Poland (1981) which began as a density depletion in the lower corona, with a bright loop forming at greater altitudes. The top of the bright loop ultimately fades in the outer corona while slow radial growth continues in the legs. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We derive the electron density distribution in the ecliptic plane, from the corona to 1 AU, using observations from 13.8 MHz to a few kHz by the radio experiment WAVES aboard the spacecraft Wind. We concentrate on type III bursts whose trajectories intersect the spacecraft, as determined by the presence of burst-associated Langmuir waves, or by energetic electrons observed by the 3-D Plasma experiment. For these bursts we are able to determine the mode of emission, fundamental or harmonic, the electron density at 1 AU, the distance of emission regions along the spiral, and the time spent by the beams as they proceed from the low corona to 1 AU. For all of the bursts considered, the emission mode at burst onset was the fundamental; by contrast, in deriving many previous models, harmonic emission was assumed.By measuring the onset time of the burst at each frequency we are able to derive an electron density model all along the trajectory of the burst. Our density model, after normalizing the density at 1 AU to be ne(215 R0)=7.2 cm–3 (the average value at the minimum of solar activity when our measurements were made), is ne=3.3×105 r–2+4.1×106 r–4+8.0×107 r–6 cm–3, with r in units of R0. For other densities at 1 AU our result implies that the coefficients in the equation need to be multiplied by n e (1 AU)/7.2.We compare this with existing models and those derived from direct, in-situ measurements (normalized to the same density at 1 AU) and find that it agrees very well with in-situ measurements and poorly with radio models based on apparent source positions or assumptions of the emission mode. One implication of our results is that isolated type III bursts do not usually propagate in dense regions of the corona and solar wind, as it is still sometimes assumed.  相似文献

A rocket-borne coronagraph utilizing external occulting disks was used to photograph the solar corona from 3 to 9 R s at 1931 UT on 7 March, 1970. Comparison of the rocket and ground-based observations shows a one-to-one correspondence between major streamers from the inner to the outer corona. In particular streamers over the poles are clearly visible against the background corona from 3 to 8 R s. These rocket data had a scattered light level of 1.2 × 10–10 B s. The derived quiet equatorial and polar K + F corona was within 10% of the absolute brightness of standard coronal models and displayed identical radial gradients to those models. The photometric profiles of the NE limb streamer were analyzed assuming a model in which the core density follows a Gaussian distribution in directions perpendicular to the radius vector. This streamer was assumed to be rooted on the visible disk at 55 to 60° from the plane-of-the-sky as based on K-coronameter and XUV data. An uncertainty of as much as a factor of three still remains for the value of the axis density owing to uncertainty in the line-of-sight dimension of the streamer.  相似文献

The pulsed plasma probe technique has been expanded to include simultaneous determinations of absolute electron density, density fluctuations, electron temperature, and mean-ion-mass with resolution limited only by probe geometry, sheath size, and telemetry. The technique has been designed to test for coupling of electron density variations and ion composition irregularities in multi-component plasmas by the comparison of electron density fluctuation power spectraP N(k) and a newly-developed diagnostic parameter, the mean-ion-mass fluctuation spectraM i/M iP M(k). In addition, the experiment extends satellite-borne irregularity spectral analyses down to the 5–20 m range while attempting to identify F-region plasma instability processes on the basis of characteristics inN e,T e, N e,P N,M i, andP M. Initial results demonstrate the expanded diagnostic capability for high spatial resolution measurements of mean-ion-mass and provide experimental evidence for the role of ion composition in multi-stepped plasma instability processes. Specific results include a spectral indexX n inP N=A nf–X n of 1.6–2.9 over the wavelength range from 1 km to 6 m under conditions identified with an unstable equatorial nighttime ionosphere. Simultaneous measurements ofM i/M i(P M=A M f –X m) andN e/N e(P N=A n f –X n) have shown a general behavior tending to lower power (A m<A n) and softer spectra (X m<X n) in ion mass fluctuations when compared with fluctuations in total plasma density. Limited analyses of the two power spectral elements raise hopes for the differentiation between plasma mechanisms that can lead to similar indices inP N.Paper originally submitted to the journalSpace Science Instrumentation.  相似文献

An empirical relation which relates the 408 MHz galactic continuum background temperature (408GCBT) to dispersion measures, position and radio-luminosity of 325 pulsars is obtained by means of multple stepwise regression analysis. This relation showns that pulsars may be considered as galactic probes for the distribution of 408GCBT and interstellar electron density (IED) in interstellar medium (ISM).Peculiar pulsars (O-C±2.5) point out galactic regions where the observedT 408 are higher (or lower) andn e lower (or higher) than the averaged ones.Normal pulsars (–2.5T 408 andn e are in agreement, on, the average.Standard pulsars (O-C±0.05) show galactic regions where observed and computedT 408 andn e are in good agreement. Recent models of pulsar disk systems, suggested by Michel and Dessler (1981) could justify the conclusions drawn for peculiar pulsars having O-C>2.5.  相似文献

Two methods have been used to compute and compare the perturbations in perigee distance for an artificial Earth satellite. The two methods have used different air density models. The first (Helali, 1987) used the TD model, formulated by Sehnel (1986a), which contains terms that describe all the principal changes of the thermospheric density due to solar activity, geomagnetic activity, and the height. The second method (Davis, 1963) used a model of the density which takes into account the rotation of the atmosphere, the bulging atmosphere and the height. For different values of eccentricities from 0.001 to 0.05 we computed the perturbations P r in the perigee distance at different heights from 200 to 350 km for both methods. The results show a good agreement for the computed values of P r for different values of e (0 < e 0.02) in both methods at perigee heights from 250 to 350 km. Meanwhile, for perigee heights smaller than about 250 km we found a maximum difference in P r amounting to 20 metres/revolution for e = 0.005 and 0.01.  相似文献

Three different asymptotic branches of the two-fluid equations are found with e m , p n , where, is the inverse distance from the Sun, with (m, n) = (2/7, 2/7), (2/7, 6/7), (4/3, 4/3); other special solutions are also found but they correspond to special choices of density and temperature at the corona. In all the (4/3, 4/3) solutions, the electron and proton temperatures tend to equality at large distances. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

In some gradual hard X-ray bursts with high intensity, hard X-ray source (15–40 keV) is steadily located in the corona along with softer X-ray source (5–10 keV).Two stationary models, high density and high temperature models, are proposed to solve the difficult problem of confinement of hot (or nonthermal) plasma in the direction of the magnetic field along the loops in the corona. In both models, an essential point is that the effective X-ray source is composed of fine dense filamentary loops imbeded in a larger rarefied coronal loop, and the electron number density in the filaments is so high as 1011–1012 cm-3. If the density is so high heat conduction can be as reasonably small as of the order of 1027 erg s -1 for the given emission measures of observed X-rays, since the required cross-sectional area is small and also classical conduction is valid. Collisional confinement of thermal tail, and nonthermal electrons if any, up to 50–60 keV in the filaments is also possible, so that the hard X-ray images can be loop like structure instead of double source (foot points).High density model is applicable to the coronal filamentary loops with temperature T m < 5 × 107 K at the loop summit. The heat flow from the summit downwards is lost almost completely by the radiation from the loop during the conduction to the foot points. A continuous energy release is assumed near the summit to maintain the stationary temperature T m, and pressure balance is maintained along the loop. In this model, the number density at the summit is given by n m - 106 T m 2 /sm, where s m is the length of the loop from the summit to the foot point, and the distribution of temperature and density along the loop are given by T = T m(s/sm)1/3 and n = n m(s/sm)-1/3, respectively.High temperature model is applicable to the filamentary loops with higher temperature up to about 108.5 K and comparatively lower number density as 1011 cm-3 for the requirement of magnetic confinement of the hot plasma in radial direction. The radiation from the loop is negligibly small in this model so that the heat flux is nearly conserved down to the foot points. In this case, temperature gradient is smaller than that of the high density model, depending on the tapering of the magnetic bottle. In both models, the differential emission measure is maximum at the highest temperature T m and the brightness distribution along the loop shows a maximum around the summit of the loop if some magnetic tapering is taken into account.  相似文献

A theoretical model of the acceleration region of the solar wind with major species (p, , e) and minor ions (e.g., 3He, C, O, Mg, Si) is presented. Observed n e -profiles and the equations of continuity and momentum are used to calculate profiles of T, n, and u for all species, as well as charge states of minor ions. The disagreement of the results of a pure p-e model with observations is discussed in some detail, and it is shown that a model consistent with observations both in the corona and at 1 AU requires a finite abundance of He+ +. This model predicts a strong enhancement of He/H in the lower corona. The results for the frozen-in charge states in the p--e model are in agreement with measurements in the low speed solar wind, especially for the well determined pair O6+/O7+. Finally, a model for a coronal hole is investigated and it is found that wave pressure is necessary to model successfully the observed solar wind speeds and abundances.Although various simplifying assumptions had to be introduced, care was taken to ensure that the model remains physically consistent, i.e., that the same physics is used for the major species as well as the minor ions.  相似文献

A photometric and colorimetric analysis of a color picture of the very inner solar corona, near the South pole region, is performed. Dimensions and average electron densities of both chromospheric and very fine resolved coronal spikes are deduced. For the coronal spike a half width of 1.67 is measured, the estimate of electron density yields n e = 1010 cm–3. Some conclusions are attempted on the light of a simultaneously observed spectrum of the same region which appeared to be a disappearing coronal hole. The observations seem to support the concept of a striated corona. On leave from Institut d'Astrophysique, Paris as NRC Post-Doctoral Research Assistant.  相似文献

A study of pulsational properties with evolution has been done for a 15.6M star withX e =0.90 andY e =0.08. Pulsational properties in the hydrogen-burning stages have been compared with those in helium-burning stages. A comparison with observed characteristics of Cepheids, classical Cepheids and supergiant variables has been made during the course of its evolution. In addition, models of 5,9 and 15M withX e =0.708,Y e =0.272 have also been studied for pulsational properties during the helium burning stage. It is also seen that pulsational instability is sensitive to changes in initial chemical composition and opacity parameters,n ands. A low helium abundance could be a reason for the stability of the models, even when lying in the instability strip of the H-R diagram.  相似文献

Observations of a surge prominence event on 31 May 1971 are discussed. The continuum emission observed during the upward acceleration of the surge is attributed to the scattering of photospheric radiation by free electrons. The observed scattered light intensity amounts to a few times 10–5 that of the central disk intensity leading to a column density of n e L1020 cm–2. The actual electron density when taking into account the presence of inhomogeneities is n e 1012 cm–3. The dynamic and morphological behaviour of the surge is considered.  相似文献

A large surge event appearing in AR 5395 was observed at the Yunnan Observatory on March 19, 1989. H spectral profiles of the event are interpreted by using a two-cloud model and the contours of three parameters: excitation temperature, T exc, microturbulent velocity, V t ,and column density of hydrogen atoms at the second level, N 0,2, are obtained, respectively. The question about the unique feature of the solution obtained by the fitting method is also discussed. The results show that the surge is composed of some conglomerated materials with higher temperature and density; the mass ejection is probably intermittent. Neither T exc nor N 0,2 vary with the height over the solar limb but decrease from the center to the periphery of the surge. V t varies from 10 to 30 km s-1 and decreases with height. Some other important parameters, such as electron density, n e ,and electron pressure, P e ,etc., have also been estimated. In the surge, with N 0,2 about 2.0 × 1012 cm-2 and T exc about 8500 K on average, we obtained n e = 1.80 × 1010 cm-3 and P e = 0.023 dyn cm-2. The energy variations of the surge during the ascending phase are estimated.  相似文献
