Summary The paper presents some mathematic patterns by using the linear programming. These patterns are making up a simple method of gravimetric data transformation, solvable with the help of digital computers. Some methods of differentiating the regional and local anomalies, of effectuating the calculus of some gravity derivatives and of establishing the shape of bidimensional bodies, are shown. This work was aimed to enlarge the field of the linear programming appliableness within geophysics. Zusammenfassung Die vonWoronichin [29] alsIsocystis pallida beschriebene Cyanophycee, welche vonAnagnostidis [1] h?ufig in griechischen Thermalquellen gefunden wurde, hatGeitler [17] zu den hefeartigen Pilzen der GattungTorulopsidosira gestellt. Diesen Organismus, den wir in verschiedenen Thermen reelm?ssig angetroffen haben, (Griechenland, Ungarn, Schweiz) untersuchten wir an Hand umfangreicher Materialproben. Statistische und zellphysiologische Versuche sowie systematische Vergleiche führten uns zu dem Ergebnis, diesen Organismus alsI. pallida (Woronich.) bei den Cyanophyten zu belassen, bis biochemische Resultate seine Zugeh?rigkeit zu den Blaualgen in Frage stellen sollten.
Summary The blue-green alga described byWoronichin [29] asIsocystis pallida and often found byAnagnostidis [1] in Greek hot springs has been classified byGeitler [17] among yeast-like fungi of the genusTorulopsidosira. This organism was regularly found in various hot springs (Greece, Hungary, Switzerland). Statistical and cytological tests, as well as systematical comparisons, led us to conclude that it should be classified asI. pallida (Woronich.) among the Cyanophyta until biochemical results should give cause to doubt that it belongs to the blue-green algae.

Summary The study of heat exchanges or temperature changes in the surface layers of the soil are important in agricultural science at tropical latitudes. The quantity, thermal diffusivity largely determines the temperature change produced in any layer of the soil when heat is conducted there from an adjacent layer. Therefore, the authors have determined the thermal diffusivity of the soil from range and lag methods suggested byJohnson andDavies [15]2) andCoutis [7] respectively. The values of diffusivity cbtained from these methods agree well with each other. The effect of soil moisture on diffusivity has been studied. The diffusivity increases with the increase of moisture in the surface layers of the scil. The ratio of ranges of soil temperature at different depths is found to be approximately constant which is in agreement with the theory of heat flow into the soils. The results of diffusivity obtained from these methods agree well with those results of past workers. The mean value of the thermal diffusivity of red sandy soil at the experimental site of Waltair is found to be 6.336×10–3 cm2/sec.  相似文献

Summary The value of three different methods for deducing aerosol size distribution from diffusional decay measurements — the exhaustion method proposed byPollak andMetnieks, the method byFuchs et al. and the method byNolan andScott — is investigated with numerical examples of known distributions and also by applying them to laboratory experiments. It was found that the exhaustion method and the method proposed byFuchs et al. are satisfactory for deducing the mean particle size and that none of the three methods is quite satisfactory for deducing dispersion of the distributions with higher accuracy.  相似文献

Starting with the average actual distribution of ozone (Dütsch [15]) and temperature in the stratosphere, we have calculated the solar intensity as a function of wavelength and the instantaneous rates (molecules cm–3 sec–1) for each Chapman reaction and for each of several reactions of the oxides of nitrogen. The calculation is similar to that ofBrewer andWilson [5]. These reaction rates were calculated independently in each volume element in spherical polar coordinates defined by R=1 km from zero to 50, =5° latitude, and ø=15° longitude (thus including day and night conditions). Calculations were made for two times: summer-winter (January 15) and spring-fall (March 22). As input data we take observed solar intensities (Ackerman [1]) and observed, critically evaluated. constants for elementary chemical and photochemical reactions; no adjustable parameters are employed. (These are not photochemical equilibrium calculations.) According to the Chapman model, the instantaneous, integrated, world-wide rate of formation of ozone from sunlight is about five times faster than the rate of ozone destruction, and locally (lower tropical stratosphere) the rate of ozone formation exceeds the rate of destruction by a factors as great as 1000. The global rates of increase of ozone are more than 50 times faster thanBrewer andWilson's [5] estimate of the average annual transfer rate of ozone to the troposphere. The rate constants of the Chapman reactions are believed to be well-enough known that it is highly improbable that these discrepancies are, due to erroneous rate constants. It is concluded that something else besides neutral oxygen species is very important in stratospheric ozone photochemistry. The inclusion of a uniform concentration of the oxides of nitrogen (NOx as, NO and NO2) averaging 6.6×10–9 mole fraction gives a balance between global ozone formation and destruction rates. The inclusion of a uniform mole fraction of NOx at 28×10–9 also gives a global balance. These calculations support the hypethesis (Crutzen [10],Johnston [24]) that the oxides of nitrogen are the most important factor in the global, natural ozone balance. Several authors have recently evaluated the natural source strength of NOx in the stratosphere; the projected fleets of supersonic transports would constitute an artificial source of NOx about equal to the natural value, thus promising more or less to double an active natural stratospheric ingredient.  相似文献

The information content of the 7-year BUV data set has been reexamined by a comparison with a fairly large set of ground Dobson and M-83 instruments. The satellite-ground intercomparison of total ozone was done under different types of ground observation techniques (observation code) and different instrument exposure (exposure code) and for various distances of the subsatellite point from the station. Because of the existing latitudinal gradient in total ozone, at a given station the bias ground-BUV tends to be smaller when the subsatellite point is at a latitude higher than the station's latitude. Knowing the total ozone gradient at a given station, the BUV total ozone has been corrected to account for the ozone gradient and the correlation was calculated with the corresponding ground observations. These correlations seem to offer no improvement when compared with the correlations between the ground ozone and the actual BUV ozone at distances of the subsatellite point from the station within 200 km from the station used in previous studies. The seasonal variation of the BUV-ground correlation reveals information on the noise level of the measurements and the geographical distribution of the percentage mean bias: (Ground-BUV)×100/(Ground) is discussed. Both on short and on longer time scales it appears that the BUV derived recommended total ozone data set is reasonably good and possible instrumental drifts are not large. The analysis includes an extension through April 1977 of the BUV and contour-derived total ozone trends byLondon andLing (1980). Over the northern hemisphere both data sets (contour and BUV) show comparable trends over middle and high latitudes which range from –3 D.U./year to –5 D.U./year during the 7-year period April 1970–April 1977. In the southern hemisphere, however, long-term variation in total ozone cannot be determined from ground observations alone. It is concluded that for unknown reasons during the 7-year period of study, total ozone has been decreasing over most of the globe. The negative growth rates at high latitudes of the northern hemisphere are highly significant.  相似文献

Summary As a preliminary calculation of the Equilibrium Theory of Tides, a fictitious Earth-Moon configuration is analyzed byThomson andTait [1]2), in which non-sphericity of oceans is attributed to the attraction exerted by a stationary Moon. A rise of level is found at the which Earth-Moon orbital motion is accounted. This feature, which is utterly contradictory to fact according toG. H. Darwin [2] prompted him to remark that the equilibrium theory is nearly as much wrong as possible, in respect to the time of high water. An elementary analysis is given which, in demonstrating an exactly opposite finding, suggests a manner of removing one of the long-standing obscurities of the Laplace theory, remarked upon byHough andAiry, and in recent times byC. Summary The object of this paper is to study the stresses produced in a porous liquid-saturated solid of the type considered byBiot [1]2) by a normal load moving along the surface of such a solid. Two cases have been considered. In the first case, the porous solid is taken to be semi-infinite, while in the second case we consider a layer of the liquid-saturated porous solid resting on a smooth rigid foundation. Expressions have been obtained for the stresses at any point in the medium due to a normal load moving along the free surface of the porous solid. Detailed numerical calculations have been carried out for liquid-saturated sandstone, using the data given byFatt [9] for such a medium. These calculations show that the normal stress zz in the solid falls off approximately as 1/z with increase in the depthz below the free surface, and that the stresses in the solid and in the liquid fall off rapidly as we move away from the point directly below the moving load.  相似文献

Summary The external field due to plasma within the magnetosphere has been computed as a function ofA p, which is a measure of solar wind velocity, for very quiet to slightly disturbed conditions using mean daily horizontal intensity from 1932 to 1968 at Alibag. The intensity, corrected for secular change and reduced to a common epoch, showed initially a small increase withA p followed by a steady depression with further increase in the index. ForA p7.5, which is representative of conditions over the 33-hour interval during which data relating to low-energy protons were acquired and used byHoffman andBracken [4]2) to compute current distributions, the decrease, computed here from surface data, is 6 . This is in goodagreement with the southward directed field of the quiet-time proton belt 9±5 obtained byHoffman andBracken.  相似文献

Summary The radiation tables byElsasser andCulbertson [1]2) are based upon an integrated form of the radiative transfer equation. Unfortunately, a term dealing with the temperature dependency of the transmission function is left out. This leads to an inconsistency of their analysis. Summary Least square criterion has been introduced to specify the order of isostatic compensation of mountains. The hydrostatic stability of the mountains is of basic significance in plate tectonics. However different concepts of isostasy differ in the evaluation of its order. An elegant and rapid technique is developed which extends the symmetric matrix method of root estimation byNegi andGarde [1]3) to provide a stability test through the mathematical expectation of the root increment. Summary Coda waves viz. the tail portion of an earthquake record have been observed and analysed byCarder, Macelwane and others. They showed that the periods of such waves increase with the increase of epicentral distances.Carder observed that these waves have very little transverse component so that these may be considered as of the type of Rayleigh waves. RecentlyOmote showed that the Coda waves contain three periodsT 1,T 2,T 3 of whichT 1 increases with epi-central distances as observed by previous observers. ButT 2,T 3 remain constant for all earthquakes from different epicentral distances.Omote tried to explain this phenomenon by considering that the surface of the earth consists of several layers andT 2,T 3 are free oscillation periods of the surface layers.T 1 period has been explained bySezawa and also byJeffreys which has been shown byGutenberg. The author has attempted to explain the periodsT 2,T 3 by considering passage of cracks at the focal region. The Rayleigh wave character of Coda waves and low velocity of such waves have been explained.  相似文献

Summary Regional variations have been indicated in the slope of theP travel-time curve in the shadow zone of the earth's core. Further study is needed since the uncertainties of the slope are large, especially for the observations from North American stations. There is no significant difference between themean slope of theP travel-time curve in the 95°102.9 range and those obtained byJeffreys, andJeffreys andBullen. However, there is a significant difference between themean slope in the 103° to 135° range as obtained in this study, and those obtained byJeffreys andBullen, and in a later revision byJeffreys. Themean travel-time curve ofP in the shadow zone of the earth's core should be lowered. A trial travel-time table is given with amean slope of 4.41 sec/deg. This table is in close agreement with the times obtained byGutenberg andRichter, and with the trial travel-times ofLehmann. Under the assumption of diffraction the longitudinal wave velocity has been determined to be 13.7 km/sec at the core-mantle boundary.This paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Seismological Society of America Reno, Nevada, 1966.  相似文献

Summary A layer of a few hundred meters thickness with suspended matter (a nepheloid zone) was discovered byEwing andThorndike [4]3) near the bottom on the continental slope of the North Atlantic. A downward pressure gradient is produced in this layer due to increment of water density with suspensoid. When only the Coriolis force balances with this pressure gradient, a bottom nepheloid current flows southwestward parallel to the depth contours with a velocity of about 10 (cm/sec) for a slope of one degree. The pressure gradient for fluid with locally variable density above a sloping bottom is treated and an extra term due to density gradient along the slope is derived. The vertical profiles of the nepheloid current with an effect on the vertical eddy viscosity are computed. Two kinds of vertical distributions of eddy viscosity are determined from the observed nepheloid distributions and used in the calculations: constant but different values at two layers and those increasing with height. The effect of the change of density along the bottom is treated by introducing dimensionless variables. Rossby number of the nepheloid current becomes about 10–2 indicating inertia terms to be negligible. Rossby number of turbidity currents ranges from 2 (in a decaying area) to 5 (developing area), suggesting that inertia terms are more important than Coriolis terms. The trajectories of turbidity currents are computed from motion of a mass of mud under the Coriolis force and friction, and the results are applied to those inferred byHand andEmery [6] in the San Diego Through off California.LGO Contribution Number 925.  相似文献

Summary The relations of the defining parameters of a geodetic system to the deflections of the vertical in this system given byVening Meinesz have been used in the computation of a best fitting ellipsoid. The data was that used byHayford in the computation of the resulting International Ellipsoid. Assuming the undulation (N 0) at Meades Ranch to be zero, the results are: a=6,378,194 m and l/f=299.9. This a is much nearer to modern values than that of the Internaitonal Ellipsoid. If a flattening of 1/298.24 is fixed andN 0=+3m,a=6,378,164 m which differs by one meter from a recent determination given byKaula.  相似文献

Summary A review is given of the investigations on variations in the general circulation in middle latitudes made byWillett andPetterssen. According toWillett a «high-index» type of circulation pattern with a strong zonal flow has probably caused the recent climatic improvement in the northern latitudes while the «low-index» type with meridional flow would create a cooling off in the same areas. According toPetterssen an other type of «low-index» pattern with a weak zonal flow and strong meridional exchange of air has been the essential cause of the warming up of the northern latitudes in Europe. This implies that the definition of the «low-index» type is not clear and gives rise to misunderstanding. Making use of our experience on glacier retreat in northern Scandinavia it is concluded that thePetterssen type of circulation more probably than the «high-index» type has caused the warming-up in the North Atlantic area from which the retreat of the glaciers has followed.  相似文献

Summary Measuring, with the aid of two filters, the instantaneous intensity of the solar radiation in two wave lengths ( B = 0.44 , R = 0.64 ) by means of a sun photometer designed byVolz, we carried out determinations of the decadic turbidity coefficientB (=0.5 ) and the wave length exponent of the haze extinction for Mexico City. Observations were made for almost two and a half years (1960 to 1962 period). A seasonal size distribution in both parameters was found. Although the data thus obtained are provenient of a contaminated atmosphere, comparison of our data is made with those found for higher latitudes ofÅngström, Schüepp andVolz. The height of the homogeneous haze layerH D was calculated showing pronounced variations for a given wind direction. The maximum and minimum values ofB enable us to get, by the first approximation, the aerosol size distribution ofJunge for our latitudes. However, for exceptional very clear days having maximum actinometric intensity of the solar radiation the sensitivity of the microamperimeter in theVolz sun photometer fails.  相似文献
