Geometric ray theory is an extremely efficient tool for modelling wave propagation through heterogeneous media. Its use is, however, only justified when the inhomogeneity satisfies certain smoothness criteria. These criteria are often not satisfied, for example in wave propagation through turbulent media. In this paper, the effect of velocity perturbations on the phase and amplitude of transient wavefields is investigated for the situation that the velocity perturbation is not necessarily smooth enough to justify the use of ray theory. It is shown that the phase and amplitude perturbations of transient arrivals can to first order be written as weighted averages of the velocity perturbation over the first Fresnel zone. The resulting averaging integrals are derived for a homogeneous reference medium as well as for inhomogeneous reference media where the equations of dynamic ray tracing need to be invoked. The use of the averaging integrals is illustrated with a numerical example. This example also shows that the derived averaging integrals form a useful starting point for further approximations. The fact that the delay time due to the velocity perturbation can be expressed as a weighted average over the first Fresnel zone explains the success of tomographic inversions schemes that are based on ray theory in situations where ray theory is strictly not justified; in that situation one merely collapses the true sensitivity function over the first Fresnel zone to a line integral along a geometric ray.  相似文献

Loss of species richness and reduced abundance have been the main responses to perturbations of small- and medium-sized mammals in arid and semi-arid areas. Nonetheless, some mammal species whose habitat requirements are met in disturbed patches may benefit from structural changes in the environment brought about by perturbations.In desert areas of Argentina different mammal responses are attributable to both a lower complexity of disturbed patches and a decrease in sheltered places. Therefore, species associated with high plant cover either decrease in number or become locally extinct at sites affected by fire or grazing, whereas species using open areas are favored by these events.The negative effects historically assigned to different disturbances may be mitigated by adopting a hierarchical approach that considers patch diversity in different successional stages as well as the multiple opportunities of patch occupation by mammal species.  相似文献

Summary. In this paper we examine the influence of the state of stress in the equilibrium configuration of the Earth (i.e. the pre-stress) upon its adiabatic perturbations. The equations governing these perturbations to the first order (Woodhouse & Dahlen; Dahlen) are re-derived using a Lagrangian approach. Different expressions of the sesquilinear form associated to the elastic-gravitational operator are given. One of these provides a way to extend to hydrostatically pre-stressed solids the criterion of local stability given by Friedman & Schutz for uniformly rotating fluids. Then the propagation in the Earth of seismic wavefronts is considered. It is shown that the nature of these different wavefronts is entirely determined by the quadratic coefficients of the development of the specific internal energy variation, corresponding to isentropic evolution, with respect to the Lagrangian finite deformation tensor. Expressions for the velocities of the various waves are given as functions of incidence angle and pre-stress for orthotropic elastic material. In the particular case where the elastic parameters depend only on one coordinate of a curvilinear system and the axis of orthotropy of the material coincides with the corresponding natural base vector, the elastodynamic equations are reduced to a simple system for a displacement stress vector, using surface operators. In particular for spherical geometry, equations are obtained which generalize to orthotropic pre-stress those given by Alterman et al. and Takeuchi & Saito.  相似文献

The total Green's function for two-point boundary-value problems can be related to the propagator for initial-value problems. A very simple expression for the Green's function is obtained when the unperturbed medium may be described by material with a constant gradient in quadratic slowness. The derivation requires a correct understanding of assumptions made in the propagator solution. Expressions are also obtained for Green's function in multilayered media.  相似文献

The inverse tomography method has been used to study the P - and S -waves velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle underneath Iran. The method, based on the principle of source–receiver reciprocity, allows for tomographic studies of regions with sparse distribution of seismic stations if the region has sufficient seismicity. The arrival times of body waves from earthquakes in the study area as reported in the ISC catalogue (1964–1996) at all available epicentral distances are used for calculation of residual arrival times. Prior to inversion we have relocated hypocentres based on a 1-D spherical earth's model taking into account variable crustal thickness and surface topography. During the inversion seismic sources are further relocated simultaneously with the calculation of velocity perturbations. With a series of synthetic tests we demonstrate the power of the algorithm and the data to reconstruct introduced anomalies using the ray paths of the real data set and taking into account the measurement errors and outliers. The velocity anomalies show that the crust and upper mantle beneath the Iranian Plateau comprises a low velocity domain between the Arabian Plate and the Caspian Block. This is in agreement with global tomographic models, and also tectonic models, in which active Iranian plateau is trapped between the stable Turan plate in the north and the Arabian shield in the south. Our results show clear evidence of the mainly aseismic subduction of the oceanic crust of the Oman Sea underneath the Iranian Plateau. However, along the Zagros suture zone, the subduction pattern is more complex than at Makran where the collision of the two plates is highly seismic.  相似文献

The traveltime perturbation equations for the quasi-compressional and the two quasi-shear waves propagating in a factorized anisotropic inhomogeneous (FAI) media are derived. The concept of FAI media simplifies considerably these equations. In the FAI medium, the density normalized elastic parameters a ijkl ( X i ) can be described by the relation a ijkl ( X i) = f 2( x i ) A ijkl, where A ijkl are constants, independent of coordinates x i and f 2( x i) is a continuous smooth function of x i . The types of anisotropy ( A ijkl ) and inhomogeneity [ f ( x i)] are not restricted. The traveltime perturbations of individual seismic body waves ( q P , qS 1 and qS 2) propagating in the FAI medium depend, of course, both on the structural pertubations [δ f 2( x i)] and on the anisotropy perturbations (δ A ijkl ), but both these effects are fully separated. The perturbation equations for the time delay between the two qS -waves propagating in the FAI medium are simplified even more. If the unperturbed (background) medium is isotropic, the perturbation of the time delay does not depend on the structural perturbations (δ f 2( x i) at all. This striking result, valid of course only in the framework of first-order perturbation theory, will simplify considerably the interpretation of the time delay between the two split qS -waves in inhomogeneous anisotropic media. This article deals with the stratigraphic record of a climatic or tectonic perturbation of an experimental coupled catchment‐fan system. Following Bonnet & Crave's results (2003), which suggest that it is possible to differentiate between climatic or tectonic causes of surface uplift of an erosional topography from the record of sediment flux output, we design a new experimental device to test this proposition in the sedimentary signal. This device allows the study of a coupled erosion–sedimentation system at the laboratory scale for given and changing uplift and rainfall rates. On the basis of experimental results, we propose a methodology to study alluvial fan architecture from large‐scale geometries to stacking pattern and sequence analysis. In these experiments, the erosional perturbation resulting from climate or tectonic forcing induces a typical dynamic in terms of both sediment supply and the ratio between the sediment and water supply, which controls the transport capacity. The four possible forcings (rainfall rate and uplift rate increase or decrease, respectively) then result in unique dynamics of the combined parameters such as the fan slope, apex aggradation, mean sedimentation rate, grain size distribution, bed thickness and frequency and facies stacking. We first analyse large‐scale geometries (onlap, toplap, downlap or truncation) and then fine‐scale sedimentological features (fining, thinning, coarsening, thickening) in order to discriminate the nature of the forcing. This conceptual model could be adapted to real world alluvial fans in order to recognize and separate the driving mechanisms from each other.  相似文献

A high-resolution pollen and diatom stratigraphy has been studied from late-glacial annually laminated sediments of Holzmaar (425 m a.s.l., Germany). The sediment sequence studied comprises 475 varves and includes two environmental perturbations of different type and duration: the short, abrupt deposition of the late Allerød tephra layer of the Laacher See volcano (LST, 11 000 yr B.P.), and the more gradual onset of the 'Younger Dryas climatic cooling.Numerical analyses involving (partial) redundancy analyses in connection with Monte Carlo permutation tests suggest that the deposition of 78 mm of Laacher See Tephra had a statistically significant effect on the pollen stratigraphy (percentage and accumulation rates), most probably because of the proximity of the site to the volcano. The diatom accumulation rates also show a statistically significant change, whereas the diatom percentage data do not change significantly. The between-sample rates-of-change in both biostratigraphies are higher at and just after the LST event than at the transition to the Younger Dryas biozone. Sequence splitting of pollen and diatom accumulation rate data also shows a clustering of significant splits at the LST event. A close correlation between changes in the pollen and diatom percentage data for the investigated time-interval suggests a common underlying climatic signal, whereas the accumulation rates of both biostratigraphies behave more individualistically and show more short-term variability due, in part, to the inherent noise in the two data sets. Variance partitioning shows that the local pollen and diatom assemblage zones explain much of the variance in the data-sets. Statistical modelling using redundancy analysis shows that the changes in the diatom assemblages are best predicted by the Younger Dryas biozone and the main changes in the pollen stratigraphy (as represented by the first PCA axis of the pollen data).The results suggest that the biostratigraphies studied at Holzmaar reflect generally stable systems which were disturbed by the deposition of the Laacher See Tephra. After a phase of recovery both systems again reached a new phase of stability prior to the long-term Younger Dryas climatic deterioration that perturbed the assemblages again. The very close and statistically significant parallelism between the major stratigraphical patterns in the pollen and diatom percentage data highlights the responses of the two biological systems to environmental perturbations at different temporal scales.  相似文献

Using the viscoelastic correspondence principle, we utilize the surface coseismic spheroidal deformation fields (i.e. vertical displacements, potential perturbations and gravity changes) of SNREI earth models caused by four typical types of point dislocation, derived by Sun & Okubo (1993 ), to deduce the fundamental formulas for spheroidal fields relevant to viscoelastic earth models. In computations, we employ a strike-slip dislocation on a vertical plane buried at the bottom of the lithosphere to estimate the maximal viscous relaxation responses to this kind of source that possibly exist on the surface of the earth. We take the seismic moment as 1022  N  m, which is characteristic of an average large earthquake. The numerical results demonstrate that, if we take the viscosity as 1019  Pa  s in the asthenosphere, and 1021  Pa  s in the other mantle layers, the rates of surface vertical displacements and gravity changes within about 2.5° for the 10 postseismic years are respectively 1.5–8.1  cm  yr−1 and 4.0–14.9  μgal  yr−1 : the viscous relaxation for this mantle viscosity profile proceeds much faster than for a constant mantle viscosity of 1021  Pa  s.  相似文献

The changes in the trophic state in the Salada de Chiprana (north-eastern Spain) over two quite different seasonal cycles (1989, 1994/95) were studied. During the former cycle, the lake was permanently stratified, and was biogenically meromictic, and in the latter, showed no apparent stratification. The main variables related to the physico-chemical changes observed can be attributed to the effect caused by the increase in the nutrient loading. The large amounts of nutrients (total-N and total-P) and organic matter are due to the use of the lake as a reservoir for water discharged from irrigation. Two remarkable effects of the change are the permanent mixing of the water column and the immobilization of phosphorus in the form of ionic species and solid phases that are not available to the biota especially primary producers (phytoplankton, periphyton, microbial mats). The results of the present study emphasize the fragility of (hyper) saline ecosystems to anthropogenic disturbances such as increases in freshwater inflow and nutrient inputs. Likewise, the study reveals the failure of conservation criteria that have been used to manage this lake, especially those which refer to the control of freshwater, nutrient-rich influents.  相似文献

The Spiti River that drains through the arid Trans-Himalayan region is studied here. The relict deposits exposed along the river provide an opportunity to understand the interaction between the phases of intense monsoon and surface processes occurring in the cold and semi arid to-arid Trans-Himalayan region. Based on geomorphological observation the valley is broadly divided into the upper and lower Spiti Valley. The braided channel and the relict fluvio-lacustrine deposits rising from the present riverbed characterize the upper valley. The deposits in the lower valley occur on the uplifted bedrock strath and where the channel characteristics are mainly of meandering nature. Conspicuous is the occurrence of significantly thick lacustrine units within the relict sedimentary sequences of Spiti throughout the valley. The broad sedimentary architecture suggests the formation of these palaeolakes due landslide-driven river damming. The Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating of quartz derived from the bounding units of the lacustrine deposits suggests that the upper valley preserves the phase of deposition around 14–6 ka and in the lower valley around 50–30 ka. The review of published palaeoclimatic palaeolake chronology of Spiti Valley indicates that the lakes were probably formed during the wetter conditions related to Marine Isotope Stage III and II. The increased precipitation during these phases induced excessive landsliding and formation of dammed lakes along the Spiti River. The older lacustrine phase being preserved on the uplifted bedrock strath in the lower valley indicates late Pleistocene tectonic activity along the Kaurick Chango normal fault.  相似文献
