The UV-Excess survey of the northern Galactic plane images a 10°× 185° wide band, centred on the Galactic equator using the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope in four bands ( i 5875) down to ∼21–22 mag ( in i 5875). The setup and data reduction procedures are described. Simulations of the colours of main-sequence stars, giant, supergiants, DA and DB white dwarfs and AM Canum Venaticorum stars are made, including the effects of reddening. A first look at the data of the survey (currently 30 per cent complete) is given. 相似文献

We have undertaken a mid-infrared (MIR) search for new planetary nebulae (PNe) using the Spitzer Space Telescope GLIMPSE Galactic plane survey. This has involved searching extant GLIMPSE data products for morphologically appropriate structures, and investigating sources having IRAS colours similar to those of Galactic PNe. We have found 12 sources which have a high probability of being high-extinction PNe, and which possess MIR and IRAS colours, and shell morphologies similar to those of previously identified Galactic nebulae. Calibrated mapping of these structures and profiles in all four of the IRAC bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 μm ) suggests that many (if not all) of the nebulae possess at least two primary structures: an interior high surface brightness shell, corresponding to what is probably the primary ionized zone, and a much weaker halo extending to very much greater distances from the nucleus. These latter regimes are particularly evident at longer MIR wavelengths (5.8 and 8.0 μm ), and it is probable that they trace the nebular photodissociative regimes, where emission derives from small-grain continua and/or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecular bands. This latter behaviour has also been noted in previous analyses of Galactic PNe. 相似文献

We present mid-infrared (MIR) photometry for 367 Galactic disc, bulge and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) planetary nebulae (PNe), determined using data acquired with the Spitzer Space Telescope , and through the Legacy Programs GLIMPSE II (Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-plane Survey Extraordinaire II) and SAGE (Surveying the Agents of the Galaxy's Evolution). This has permitted us to make a comparison between the luminosity functions of bulge and LMC PNe, and between the MIR colours of all three categories of source. It is determined that whilst the 3.6 μm luminosity functions of the LMC and bulge sources are likely to be closely similar, the [3.6]–[5.8] and [5.8]–[8-0] indices of LMC nebulae are different from those of their disc and bulge counterparts. This may arise because of enhanced 6.2 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission within the LMC sources, and/or as a result of further, and more radical differences between the spectra of LMC and Galactic PNe. We also determine that the more evolved disc sources listed in the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg (MASH) catalogues of Parker et al. and Miszalski et al. have similar colours to those of the less evolved (and higher surface brightness) sources in the catalogue of Acker et al., a result which appears at variance with previous studies of these sources. 相似文献

The Two Micron Galactic Survey (TMGS) is the most sensitive large scale point source near infrared survey of the Galactic Plane yet attempted. The Galactic plane has been drift-scanned in several regions over the areas -5° <l < 30°, |b | 15° and 30° <l < 180°, |b | 5°. The survey is complete in the areas covered to magnitudem
k = +9.8. So far, a total area of 255 square degrees has been mapped and 500000 objects have been detected, the majority of these in the Galactic plane and with no visible counterparts. In this contribution we use data from the TMGS to probe the star distribution within the Galactic disk. 相似文献

The Galactic foreground contamination in CMBR anisotropies, especially from the dust component, is not easily separable from
the cosmological or extragalactic component. In this paper, some doubts will be raised concerning the validity of the methods
used until now to remove Galactic dust emission and will show that none of them achieves its goal.
First, I review the recent bibliography on the topic and discuss critically the methods of foreground subtraction: the cross-correlation
with templates, analysis assuming the spectral shape of the Galactic components, the “maximum entropy method”, “internal linear
combination”, and “wavelet-based high resolution fitting of internal templates”. Second, I analyse the Galactic latitude dependence
from WMAP data. The frequency dependence is discussed with data in the available literature. The result is that all methods
of subtracting the Galactic contamination are inaccurate. The Galactic latitude dependence analysis or the frequency dependence
of the anisotropies in the range 50–250 GHz put a constraint on the maximum Galactic contribution in the power spectrum to
be less than ∼ 10% (68% C. L.) for an ∼ 1 degree scale, and possibly higher for larger scales.
The origin of most of the signals in the CMBR anisotropies is not Galactic. In any case, the subtraction of the galaxy is
not accurate enough to allow a “precision Cosmology”; other sources of contamination (extragalactic, solar system) are also
present. 相似文献

We present the first data release from the second epoch Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS-2). MGPS-2 was carried out with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope at a frequency of 843 MHz and with a restoring beam of 45 × 45 arcsec2 , making it the highest resolution large-scale radio survey of the southern Galactic plane. It covers the range | b | < 10° and 245° < l < 365° , and is the Galactic counterpart to the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) which covers the whole southern sky with δ≤−30° (| b | > 10° ).
In this paper, we present the MGPS-2 compact source catalogue. The catalogue has 48 850 sources above a limiting peak brightness of 10 mJy beam−1 . Positions in the catalogue are accurate to 1–2 arcsec. A full catalogue including extended sources is in preparation. We have carried out an analysis of the compact source density across the Galactic plane and find that the source density is not statistically higher than the density expected from the extragalactic source density alone.
We also present version 2.0 of the SUMSS image data and catalogue which is now available online. The data consist of 629 4.3°× 4.3° mosaic images covering the 8100 deg2 of sky with δ≤−30° and | b | > 10° . The catalogue contains 210 412 radio sources to a limiting peak brightness of 6 mJy beam−1 at δ≤−50° and 10 mJy beam−1 at δ > −50° . We describe the updates and improvements made to the SUMSS cataloguing process. 相似文献

We explore the possibility that the diffuse gamma-ray background radiation (GBR) at high Galactic latitudes could be dominated by inverse Compton scattering of cosmic ray (CR) electrons on the cosmic microwave background radiation and on starlight from our own galaxy. Assuming that the mechanisms accelerating Galactic CR hadrons and electrons are the same, we derive simple and successful relations between the spectral indices of the GBR above a few MeV and the CR electrons and CR nuclei above a few GeV. We reproduce the observed intensity and angular dependence of the GBR, in directions away from the Galactic disc and centre, without recourse to hypothetical extragalactic sources. 相似文献

We review the current observational knowledge of the interstellar magnetic field within ∼150 pc ofthe Galactic center. We also discuss the various theoretical scenarios that have been put forward to explain the existing observations. Our critical overview leads to two important conclusions: (1) The interstellar magnetic field near the GC is approximately poloidal on average in the diffuse intercloud medium and approximately horizontal in dense interstellar clouds. (2) In the general intercloud medium, the field is relatively weak and probably close to equipartition with cosmic rays (B ∼ (6–20) μ G), but there exist a number of localized filaments where the field is much stronger (some filaments could possibly have B ≳ 1 mG). In dense interstellar clouds, the field is probably rather strong, with typical values ranging between a few 0.1 mG and a few mG (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) 相似文献

We collected the basic parameters of 231 supernova remnants (SNRs) in our Galaxy, namely, distances (d) from the Sun, linear diameters (D), Galactic heights (Z), estimated ages (t), luminosities (L), surface brightness (∑) and flux densities (S1) at 1-GHz frequency and spectral indices (α). We tried to find possible correlations between these parameters. As expected, the linear diameters were found to increase with ages for the shell-type remnants, and also to have a tendency to increase with the Galactic heights. Both the surface brightness and luminosity of SNRs at 1-GHz tend to decrease with the linear diameter and with age. No other relations between the parameters were found. 相似文献

A high galactic latitude HI 21 cm-line absorption survey using the GMRT: I. Observations and spectra

We have used the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to measure the Galactic HI 21-cm line absorption towards 102 extragalactic
radio continuum sources, located at high (|b| > 15°) Galactic latitudes. The Declination coverage of the present survey is δ}> - 45°. With a mean rms optical depth of ∼ 0.003, this is the most sensitive Galactic HI 21-cm line absorption survey to
date. To supplement the absorption data, we have extracted the HI 21-cm line emission profiles towards these 102 lines of
sight from the Leiden Dwingeloo Survey of Galactic neutral hydrogen. We have carried out a Gaussian fitting analysis to identify
the discrete absorption and emission components in these profiles. In this paper, we present the spectra and the components.
A subsequent paper will discuss the interpretation of these results. 相似文献

A sample of eight small-diameter radio sources has been selected from the Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS) as candidates for young Galactic supernova remnants. The sources have been identified in the IRAS and Midcourse Space Experiment infrared data bases and imaged in the H107α radio recombination line (RRL) using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Seven of the sources display high ratios of infrared-to-radio-continuum flux density and/or detectable RRLs and are almost certainly H ii regions. One source (G282.8−1.2) is identified as a possible new young Galactic supernova remnant, based on its relatively weak infrared emission, steep radio spectrum, and possible X-ray emission. The adopted method for distinguishing thermal and non-thermal Galactic radio sources seems promising and could be fruitfully applied to more than 100 small-diameter sources listed in the MGPS. 相似文献

We report on the diffuse X‐ray emission from the Galactic Centre (GCDX) observed with the X‐ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) on board the Suzaku satellite. The highly accurate energy calibration and extremely low background of the XIS provide many new facts on the GCDX. These are (1) the origin of the lines at 6.7 and 7.0 keV is collisional excitation in a hot plasma, (2) the discovery of new SNR and super‐bubble candidates, (3) most of the 6.4 keV line is X‐ray fluorescence, and (4) time variability of the 6.4 keV line is found from the Sgr B2 complex. We present an analysis of the thin layer of Galactic warm ionized gas at an angular resolution ∼10 arcmin. This is carried out using radio continuum data at 1.4, 2.7 and 5 GHz in the coordinate region . For this purpose, we evaluate the zero level of the 2.7- and 5-GHz surveys using auxiliary data at 2.3 GHz and 408 MHz. The derived zero-level corrections are T zero (2.7 GHz) = 0.15 ± 0.06 K and T zero (5 GHz) = 0.1 ± 0.05 K . We separate the thermal (free–free) and non-thermal (synchrotron) component by means of a spectral analysis performed adopting an antenna temperature spectral index −2.1 for the free–free emission, a realistic spatial distribution of indices for the synchrotron radiation and by fitting, pixel-by-pixel, the Galactic spectral index. We find that at 5 GHz, for | b | = 0° , the fraction of thermal emission reaches a maximum value of 82 per cent, while at 1.4 GHz, the corresponding value is 68 per cent. In addition, for the thermal emission, the analysis indicates a dominant contribution of the diffuse component relative to the source component associated with discrete H ii regions. 相似文献

We investigate the Galactic disc distribution of a sample of planetary nebulae characterized in terms of their mid-infrared spectral features. The total number of Galactic disc PNe with 8–13 μm spectra is brought up to 74 with the inclusion of 24 new objects, the spectra of which we present for the first time. 54 PNe have clearly identified warm dust emission features, and form a sample that we use to construct the distribution of the C/O chemical balance in Galactic disc PNe. The dust emission features complement the information on the progenitor masses brought by the gas-phase N/O ratios: PNe with unidentified infrared emission bands have the highest N/O ratios, while PNe with the silicate signature have either very high N enrichment or close to none. We find a trend for a decreasing proportion of O-rich PNe towards the third and fourth Galactic quadrants. Two independent distance scales confirm that the proportion of O-rich PNe decreases from per cent inside the solar circle to per cent outside. PNe with warm dust are also the youngest. PNe with no warm dust are uniformly distributed in C/O and N/O ratios, and do not appear to be confined to They also have higher 6-cm fluxes, as expected from more evolved PNe. We show that the IRAS fluxes are a good representation of the bolometric flux for compact and IR-bright PNe, which are probably optically thick. Selection of objects with should probe a good portion of the Galactic disc for these young, dense and compact nebulae, and the dominant selection effects are rooted in the PN catalogues. 相似文献

The combination of dispersion measures of pulsars, distances from the model of Cordes & Lazio (2002) and emission measures from the WHAM survey enabled a statistical study of electron densities and filling factors of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in the Milky Way. The emission measures were corrected for absorption and contributions from beyond the pulsar distance. For a sample of 157 pulsars at |b | > 5. and 60° < ℓ < 360°, located in mainly interarm regions within about 3 kpc from the Sun, we find that: (1) The average volume filling factor along the line of sight and the mean density in ionized clouds are inversely correlated: ( ) = (0.0184 ± 0.0011) –1.07 ± 0.03 for the ranges 0.03 < < 2 cm–3 and 0.8 > > 0.01. This relationship is very tight. The inverse correlation of and causes the well‐known constancy of the average electron density along the line of sight. As (z ) increases with distance from the Galactic plane |z |, the average size of the ionized clouds increases with |z |. (2) For |z| < 0.9 kpc the local density in clouds n c(z ) and local filling factor f (z ) are inversely correlated because the local electron density n e(z ) = f (z )n c(z ) is constant. We suggest that f (z ) reaches a maximum value of >0.3 near |z | = 0.9 kpc, whereas n c(z ) continues to decrease to higher |z |, thus causing the observed flattening in the distribution of dispersion measures perpendicular to the Galactic plane above this height. (3) For |z | < 0.9 kpc the local distributions n c(z ), f (z ) and (z ) have the same scale height which is in the range 250 < h ≲ 500 pc. (4) The average degree of ionization of the warm atomic gas (z ) increases towards higher |z | similarly to (z ). Towards |z | = 1 kpc, (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.05 and (z ) = 0.24 ± 0.02. Near |z | = 1 kpc most of the warm, atomic hydrogen is ionized. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim) 相似文献

A method based on Lucy's iterative algorithm is developed to invert the equation of stellar statistics for the Galactic bulge and is then applied to the K -band star counts from the Two-Micron Galactic Survey in a number of off-plane regions (10°>| b |>2°, | l |<15°). The top end of the K -band luminosity function is derived and the morphology of the stellar density function is fitted to triaxial ellipsoids, assuming a non-variable luminosity function within the bulge. The results, which have already been outlined by López-Corredoira et al., are shown in this paper with a full explanation of the steps of the inversion: the luminosity function shows a sharp decrease brighter than M K =−8.0 mag when compared with the disc population; the bulge fits triaxial ellipsoids with the major axis in the Galactic plane at an angle with the line of sight to the Galactic centre of 12° in the first quadrant; the axial ratios are 1:0.54:0.33, and the distance of the Sun from the centre of the triaxial ellipsoid is 7860 pc. The major–minor axial ratio of the ellipsoids is found not to be constant, the best fit to the gradient being K z =(8.4±1.7)×exp(− t /(2000±920) pc), where t is the distance along the major axis of the ellipsoid in parsecs. However, the interpretation of this is controversial. An eccentricity of the true density-ellipsoid gradient and a population gradient are two possible explanations. The best fit for the stellar density, for 1300 pc< t <3000 pc, is calculated for both cases, assuming an ellipsoidal distribution with constant axial ratios, and when K z is allowed to vary. From these, the total number of bulge stars is ∼3×1010 or ∼4×1010 , respectively. 相似文献

The Parkes–MIT–NRAO (PMN) radio survey has been used to generate a quasi all-sky study of Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs)
at a common frequency of 4.85 GHz (λ=6 cm). We present flux densities estimated for the sample of 110 Southern Galactic SNRs (up to δ=−65°) observed with the Parkes 64-m radio telescope and an additional sample of 54 from the Northern PMN (up to δ=+64°) survey undertaken with the Green Bank 43-m (20 SNRs) and 91-m (34 SNRs) radio telescopes. Out of this total sample
of 164 selected SNRs (representing 71% of the currently 231 known SNRs in the Green catalogue) we consider 138 to provide
reliable estimates of flux density and surface brightness distribution. This sub-sample represents those SNRs which fall within
carefully chosen selection criteria which minimises the effects of the known problems in establishing reliable fluxes from
the PMN survey data. Our selection criteria are based on a judicious restriction of source angular size and telescope beam
together with careful evaluation of fluxes on a case by case basis. Direct comparison of our new fluxes with independent literature
values gives excellent overall agreement. This gives confidence in the newly derived PMN fluxes when the selection criteria
are respected. We find a sharp drop off in the flux densities for Galactic SNRs beyond 4 Jy and then a fairly flat distribution
from 5 to 9 Jy, a slight decline and a further flat distribution from 9 to 20 Jy though the numbers of SNR in each Jy bin
are low. We also re-visit the contentious Σ–D (radio surface brightness–SNRs diameter) relation to determine a new power law index for a sub-sample of shell type SNRs
which yields β=−2.2±0.6. This new evaluation of the Σ–D relation, applied to the restricted sample, provides new distance estimates and their Galactic scale height distribution.
We find a peak in the SNR distribution between 7–11 kpc with most restricted to ±100 pc Galactic scale height. 相似文献

The paper describes the JHK colours of late-type stars which were investigated as part of a survey of South Galactic Cap (b < -30°) IRAS sources selected on the basis of their 12/25µm flux ratios as high mass-loss candidates. Near-infrared two-colour diagrams provide an effective technique for distinguishing between various groups of late-type stars. Such diagrams are also useful in indicating which stars are likely to be peculiar and worthy of more detailed study. The late-type stars isolated by this survey comprise: 61 Mira variables (3 of which are carbon stars with very thick shells), 3 young stellar objects, 4 interacting binaries, 2 semi-regular carbon variables and 154 oxygen-rich giants. 相似文献

Based on a three-component Galaxy chemical evolutionary model satisfying a large set of Galactic and extragalactic constraints, we compute the chemical evolution of the lighter neutron capture elements (e.g., Sr, Y and Zr) taking into account contributions from three processes. We compare our model results with available observational results and find that the observed trends can be understood in the light of present knowledge of neutron capture nucleosynthesis. 相似文献

A sample of 25 infrared-bright planetary nebulae (PNe) towards the Galactic bulge is analysed through 8–13 μm spectroscopy. The classification of the warm dust emission features provides a measure of the C/O chemical balance, and represents the first C/O estimates for bulge PNe. Out of 13 PNe with identified dust types, four PNe have emission features associated with C-based grains, while the remaining 9 have O-rich dust signatures. The low fraction of C-rich PNe, ≲ 30 per cent, contrasts with that for local PNe, around ∼ 80 per cent, although it follows the trend for a decreasing frequency of C-rich PNe with galactocentric radius (Paper I). We investigate whether the PNe discussed here are linked to the bulge stellar population (similar to type IV, or halo, PNe) or the inner Galactic disc (a young and super-metal-rich population). Although 60 per cent of the PNe with warm dust are convincing bulge members, none of the C-rich PNe satisfies our criteria, and they are probably linked to the inner Galactic disc. In the framework of single star evolution, the available information on bulge PNe points towards a progenitor population similar in age to that of local PNe (type I PNe are found in similar proportions), but super-metal-rich (to account for the scarcity of C-rich objects). Yet the metallicities of bulge PNe, as inferred from [O/H], fail to reach the required values – except for the C-rich objects. It is likely that the sample discussed here is derived from a mixed disc/bulge progenitor population and dominated by type IV PNe, as suggested by Peimbert. The much higher fraction of O-rich PNe in this sample than in the solar neighbourhood should result in a proportionally greater injection of silicate grains into the inner Galactic medium. 相似文献
