Water samples collected at the 21°N hydrothermal site on the East Pacific Rise crest, including Deep-Tow and hydrocast samples collected in 1977 and three hot vent water samples collected recently with the submersible “Alvin”, contain significant additions of3He,4He, and Mn. Although the vent water collections were at least 50-fold diluted with ambient seawater, they are up to 53 times enriched in3He and 7.4 times enriched in4He relative to saturated seawater, with concentrations of total dissolvable manganese (TDM) up to 310 μg/kg.3He and4He covary in the vent samples, with3He/4He about 8 times the atmospheric ratio, reflecting a mantle helium source. In contrast to the helium isotopes the Mn/3He ratio in the vent samples is variable, ranging from 4.3 × 104 up to 1.0 × 105 g/cm3. Profiles of3He/4He and TDM in the water column at 21°N show a sharp maximum ofδ(3He) = 47%and TDM= 0.69 μg/kg, much higher than the average values of 34% and 0.2 μg/kg for the deep water in this region. This spike in3He and Mn occurs at 2400 m depth, 200 m above the level of the 21°N vents, and 100 m higher than any local bathymetry, evidence for upward transport of the hydrothermal discharge via rising plumes of hot vent water. Two of the 21°N Deep-Tow samples associated with small (?0.010°C) temperature anomalies hadδ(3He) = 38%and TDM= 0.28 and 0.58 μg/kg, also slightly elevated relative to background. The Deep-Tow and hydrocast samples have lower Mn/3He ratios than average vent samples due to Mn removal by scavenging. Comparison of vent samples and water column measurements at 21°N indicate that the pure vent water could be detected using3He and Mn even when diluted ~105 times with seawater, confirming that these two tracers are extremely sensitive indicators of submarine hydrothermal activity.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 × 106years) has been determined by neutron activation in nine Allan Hills-77 meteorites. Additionally,36Cl (1/2 = 3.0 × 105years) has been measured in seven of these objects using tandem accelerator mass spectrometry. These results, along with14C (t1/2 = 5740years) and26Al (7.2 × 105 years) concentrations determined elsewhere, yield terrestrial ages ranging from 0.1 × 105 to 7 × 105 years. Weathering was not found to result in53Mn loss.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 × 106years) has been measured in twenty Antarctic meteorites by neutron activation analysis.36Cl (t1/2 = 3.0 × 105years) has been measured in fourteen of these objects by tandem accelerator mass spectrometry. Cosmic ray exposure ages and terrestrial ages of the meteorites are calculated from these results and from rare gases.14C (t1/2 = 5740years) and26Al (t1/2 = 7.2 × 105years) data. The terrestrial ages range from 3 × 104 to 5 × 105 years. Many of the L3 Allan Hills chrondrites seem to be a single fall based on these results. In addition,10Be (t1/2 = 1.6 × 106years) and36Cl have been measured in six Antarctic ice samples. The first measurements of10Be/36Cl ratios in the ice core samples demonstrate a new dating method for ice.  相似文献

The reasons why53Mn (a cosmogenic radionuclide with a half-life of 3.7 × 106 y) appears as one of the best indicators of the presence of interplanetary dust are summarized. This paper reports the detection of53Mn in pre-1952 snow samples collected on the Eastern Antarctic Plateau in the vicinity of Plateau Station. The measurements were carried out by neutron activation and X-ray spectrometry on three samples weighing a few hundred kg and covering each the time interval 1935–1950. The specific activity of53Mn was found to be (0.82 ± 0.17) disint.min?1/103 tons of snow, corresponding to a deposition rate at Plateau Station of (2.2 ± 0.5) × 10?5 disint. min?1 m?2 y?1. The mean global deposition rate would be three times higher if53Mn were assumed to behave in the same way as stratospheric90Sr. By comparing this figure with existing data on the meteorite flux reaching the earth and with the galactic and solar production rates of53Mn, it is concluded that the bulk of the53Mn found at Plateau Station is associated with interplanetary dust in which it had been produced by the action of solar protons on iron. The deposition rate of extra-terrestrial dust-borne iron must be between 1.3 × 10?5 and 1.3 × 10?4 g m?2 y?1 at Plateau Station. These results support jointly with other studies the concept of an interplanetary zodiacal cloud of dust with a chemical composition and density not essentially different from chondritic meteorites, with a relatively ‘flat’ grain size distribution and a mass influx to the earth of the order of 105 tons/y.  相似文献

Cosmogenic14C has been measured in 12 chondrites and the stone phase of the mesosiderite Bondoc. For the chondrites analysed the activities vary between 44 and 72 dpm/kg; the low value of (4.5 ± 0.9) dpm/kg for Bondoc is essentially due to its large pre-atmospheric size and not to a terrestrial age of several half-lives of14C.In eight cases39Ar in the metal phase from the same meteorite specimens had been measured previously. The results are combined to derive the pre-atmospheric radiiR0 of the meteoroids and depth of burial of the samples investigated. Values ofR0 between 35 and 82 cm are obtained; of 14 samples ten came from a depth of 10 cm or less. The preponderance of samples from shallow depths is ascribed to asymmetrical ablation losses of the meteoroids during their passage through the atmosphere.A compilation of all published14C concentrations in chondrites shows that the variations between different specimens from thesame meteorites are almost as large as those for samples fromdifferent meteorites. Thus, there is no need to invoke different orbits of the meteoroids and a strong spatial gradient in the primary cosmic-ray intensity to explain variations of low-energy-produced cosmogenic nuclides in different meteorites.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t½ = 3.7 × 106years) has been determined by neutron activation analysis in twenty-two chondrites including three Antarctic meteorites: Yamato-7301 (j), -7305 (k) and -7304 (m).53Mn was also measured in four mesosiderites, three iron meteorites, Bencubbin (unique) and Udei Station (iron with silicate inclusions). In addition, preliminary results for10Be (1.6 × 106 years) were obtained in the Yamato meteorites using a low-background needle GM counter. Based on published values of rare gas ages, corrections were made for undersaturation; the average specific saturation activities of53Mn were found in the range 450 ± 90dpm53Mn/kg Fe in most of the chondrites and 490 ± 75dpm53Mn/kg Fe in the mesosiderites. Two meteorites had extremely low contents of53Mn: 102 ± 6 in Yamato-7301 and 48 ± 3dpm53Mn/kg Fe in Bondoc. The Bondoc mesosiderite was already known to have a low concentration of cosmogenic radionuclides due to its large pre-atmospheric size. Several possible mechanisms are discussed to explain the low53Mn activity in Yamato-7301: (1) long terrestrial age of about 7 m.y.; (2) low production rate of53Mn due to heavy pre-atmospheric shielding (>70cm); (3) multi-stage irradiation history resulting in an undersaturation of53Mn; and (4) a mechanism in which two or three of the above factors are combined. The ratio of53Mn production rate in Ni to that in Fe has been estimated to be 1/3, based on the measurements of53Mn in the metallic and silicate phases of St. Séverin meteorite, as well as on published results of some high-energy bombardment experiments.  相似文献

Three physical quantities define the essentials of the cosmic ray exposure history of a sample of an iron meteorite: (1) the cosmic ray exposure age T, (2) the pre-atmospheric “size” S of the irradiated body, and (3) the location, i.e. the “depth” D, of the samples within the body. To establish these quantities for a given sample three independent quantities must be determined experimentally. In the present work T is ascertained by the 41K/40K method and the 4He and 21Ne concentrations (C4 and C21) are measured by the isotope dilution method. Signer and Nier's evaluation of the rare gas distribution in the meteorite Grant and the measured exposure age for this meteorite provide the relationships allowing to ascertain for any meteorite the quantities S and D from the 21Ne production rate (P21 = C21/T) and the 4He/21Ne ratio.Earlier measurements have provided data on the isotopic composition of potassium in 74 different iron meteorites. New rare gas measurements are reported for some 40 samples. Results on the age, size and depth are obtained for almost 60 samples. These data suggest that Signer and Nier's model is well suited for describing not only the rare gas distribution in a single selected meteorite (Grant) but also the exposure histories of the great majority of all irons. For a few samples, however, secondary breakups of the meteoroid and a two- or multiple-stage irradiation must be invoked. Further measurements are proposed for testing and, possibly, refining the still somewhat uncertain relationships between the abundances of cosmogenic nuclides and the quantities T, S, and D in very large meteorites.Histograms are presented showing the age distributions for irons of different chemical groups and of different size ranges. The feasibility and the relative merits of other methods for the determination of T, S, and D are discussed.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 × 106years) was measured in individual and groups of deep-sea iron and stony spherules by highly sensitive neutron activation analysis. The activities found were less than 20 dpm53Mn/kg Fe (10?5?10?6 dpm53Mn/sample) in iron spherules except one iron spherule whose activity was 241 ± 73 dpm53Mn/kg Fe. These low activities may indicate evaporative loss of53Mn due to heating in the earth's atmosphere. On the other hand, all stony spherules contained 200–260 dpm53Mn/kg Fe which is similar to chondritic values. These spherules may be ablation debris from large objects.  相似文献

The possibility of quantifying surface processes in mafic or volcanic environment using the potentialities offered by the in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides, and more specifically by the in situ-produced 10Be, is often hampered by the rarity of quartz minerals in the available lithologies. As an alternative to overcome this difficulty, we explore in this work the possibility of relying on feldspar minerals rather that on quartz to perform in situ-produced 10Be measurements in such environments. Our strategy was to cross-calibrate the total production rate of 10Be in feldspar (P10fsp) against the total production rate of 3He in pyroxene (P3px) by measuring 3He and 10Be in cogenetic pyroxene (3Hepx) and feldspar (10Befsp). The samples were collected from eight ignimbritic boulders, exposed from ca 120 to 600 ka at elevations ranging from 800 to 2500 m, along the preserved rock-avalanche deposits of the giant Caquilluco landslide (18°S, 70°W), Southern Peru. Along with data recently published by Blard et al. (2013a) at a close latitude (22°S) but higher elevation (ca. 4000 m), the samples yield a remarkably tight cluster of 3Hepx - 10Befsp total production ratios whose weighted-mean is 35.6 ± 0.5 (1σ). The obtained weighted-mean 3Hepx - 10Befsp total production ratio combined with the local 3Hepy total production rate in the high tropical Andes published by Martin et al. (2017) allows to establish a total SLHL 10Be in situ-production rate in feldspar mineral (P10fsp) of 3.57 ± 0.21 at.g−1.yr−1 (scaled for the LSD scaling scheme, the ERA40 atm model and the VDM of Lifton, 2016).Despite the large elevation range covered by the whole dataset (800–4300 m), no significant variation of the 3Hepx - 10Befsp total production ratios in pyroxene and feldspar was evidenced. As an attempt to investigate the effect of the chemical composition of feldspar on the total 10Be production rate, major and trace element concentrations of the studied feldspar samples were analyzed. Unfortunately, giving the low compositional variability of our dataset, this issue is still pending.  相似文献

We present a Bayesian isochron approach to interpret measurements of multiple cosmogenic nuclides from glacially modified bedrock surfaces with complex exposure histories. An isochron approach explicitly incorporating glacial erosion is ideally suited for this problem; such erosion must be accounted for but has traditionally been ignored. Previous methods required treating each sample individually (to account for glacial erosion) and subsequently averaging results for the entire dataset. Geological considerations, however, suggest a more robust approach is to treat samples in the dataset here (and samples from other conceivable datasets) simultaneously. The Bayesian isochron method is applied to a previously published set of in situ 14C and 10Be measurements from a set of samples spanning the forefield of the Rhone Glacier, Switzerland. Results indicate 6.4 ± 0.5 kyr of integrated exposure and 4.7 ± 0.5 kyr of cumulative burial, similar to previous estimates, but with much smaller uncertainties. The reduced uncertainties result from fitting the exposure and burial duration to the entire dataset, while explicitly accounting for glacial erosion. The method presented here should be applicable with minor modifications in a number of geologic settings, and further demonstrates the utility of paired in situ 10Be and 14C measurements for unraveling complex exposure histories over during the Holocene and late Pleistocene.  相似文献

Cosmogenic nuclide exposure dating of glacial clasts is becoming a common and robust method for reconstructing the history of glaciers and ice sheets. In Antarctica, however, many samples exhibit cosmogenic nuclide ‘inheritance’ as a result of sediment recycling and exposure to cosmic radiation during previous ice free periods. In-situ cosmogenic 14C, in combination with longer lived nuclides such as 10Be, can be used to detect inheritance because the relatively short half-life of 14C means that in-situ 14C acquired in exposure during previous interglacials decays away while the sample locality is covered by ice during the subsequent glacial. Measurements of in-situ 14C in clasts from the last deglaciation of the Framnes Mountains in East Antarctica provide deglaciation ages that are concordant with existing 26Al and 10Be ages, suggesting that in this area, the younger population of erratics contain limited inheritance.  相似文献

The10Be method of dating of marine sediment cores is applied to five North Pacific cores. Assuming a constant10Be precipitation rate and varying sedimentation rates with time during the past 2.5 m.y. dating confirms to that obtained from paleomagnetic stratigraphy. The10Be concentration variations with depth in the cores are primarily due to changes in sediment dilution and do not reflect cosmic ray intensity or global climate variations. The limits of10Be deposition rate variation in the investigated cores are less than ± 10% for periods of (2–7) × 105 years and less than ±30% for periods of 1 × 105 years. The data set gives a half-life of10Be is 1.50 × 106 years. The latitudinal effect of10Be concentrations and10Be/9Be ratios relates to a frequency of particulate matter occurrence (detrital and biological particles) in the oceans and to oceanic circulation.  相似文献

Anthropogenic radionuclides have reached the Hudson estuary as global fallout from nuclear weapons testing and through local releases from commercial nuclear reactors. Significant activities of238Pu and239,240Pu (fallout-derived),134Cs and60Co (reactor-released), and137Cs (derived from both sources), have accumulated in the sediments throughout the estuary, with the primary zone of accumulation near the downstream end of the system in New York harbor. The estuary appears to have trapped nearly all of the239,240Pu delivered as fallout, and consequently, ocean dumping of dredged harbor sediment is currently the primary means for the net transport of these nuclides to coastal waters. In contrast, only 10–30% of the137Cs,134Cs and60Co delivered to the estuary have been retained on the fine particles which accumulate at a rapid rate in the harbor. The primary factors which have governed the distribution of anthropogenic radionuclides in Hudson sediments are: (1) spread of fine particles labeled with both fallout and reactor nuclides throughout the axis of the estuary, (2) differences in timing of the peak fallout years (1962–1964) and years of maximum reactor releases (1971–1972), (3) large variations in sediment accumulation rates, ranging from a few millimeters per year or less to many tens of centimeters per year, (4) appreciable desorption of137Cs and134Cs from particles at higher salinities, and (5) possible enhanced desorption of60Co at higher salinities (relative to134Cs and137Cs) which may be associated with the release of reduced manganese from the harbor sediments.  相似文献

Spectra of internal friction between 2 and 8 Hz were studied in a single crystal of enstatite, in a polycrystal of synthetic forsterite and in several samples of natural peridotite. Measurements of Q?1 and μ were performed in vacuum (10?6 torr), from room temperature up to 1100°C. For these experimental conditions no peak was observed in the polycrystalline undeformed forsterite, but the background attenuation irregularly increased from 5 · 10?3 to 10?2.A peak Q?1 = 7 · 10?2 appears in a deformed peridotite at 930°C. It is reduced of 60% after 5 h of annealing at 1100°C. But the background attenuation persists. In the single crystal of enstatite, a peak is observed at 760°C (Q?1 = 6 · 10?2). A mechanism involving dislocations is suggested as a possible explanation for the peak obtained with the peridotite samples. If this hypothesis is right, the observed effect would be diffusion controlled so that one can expect pressure to translate it towards higher temperature. This mechanism could therefore appear in the upper mantle. Background attenuation could be the result of intergranular thermal losses.  相似文献

Early diagenetic manganese nodules from the northeast Pacific nodule belt and from the southeast Pacific (Peru Basin) show primary growth features of dendritic microtextures consisting of alternating laminae of crystalline 10-Åmanganate (A1 substance) and amorphous material which is composed of an intimate mixture of ferric hydroxide, silicate, and δ-MnO2 (A2 substance). The formation of rhythmic sequences of A1 and A2 microlayers is explained by physico-chemical changes in the peneliquid sediment layer and in the microenvironment of the accreting nodule surface: (a) upward diffusion of Mn2+ in the interstitial water as a result of decay of organic matter and Mn mobilization; (b) oxidation of Mn2+ and formation of 10-Åmanganate in the upper part of the peneliquid sediment layer, leading to pH depression in the microenvironment of the nodule surface which decreases the mobility of silicate, resulting in formation of A2 layers; (c) restoration of pH and renewed precipitation of 10-Åmanganate.Based on data of 171 bulk analyses and on electron microprobe investigations, interelement relationships between Co, Mn, and Fe are pointed out. Fe and Co show a significant positive correlation (r = 0.84), while Mn and Co are poorly negatively correlated (r = ?0.21), assuming linear regression. The enrichment of Co within the amorphous A2 phase is attributed to specific surface adsorption and subsequent oxidation of Co2+ to Co3+ in the strong electric field of Si4+. Robust complexes of Co(III) and ≡ FeH2SiO4? prevent most of the Co from being available for the 10-Åmanganate precipitation. Concerning the relation between Mn and Fe and Co respectively, the highest correlation coefficients are obtained using an inverse logarithmic regression. Under early diagenetic conditions, the concentration and precipitation of Mn2+ in the interstitial water depends on the redox gradient which is controlled by the amount of decomposing organic matter. The Nernst equation describes the relationship as a reciprocal logarithmic function. However, the quantities of colloidal ferric hydroxide and of dissolved silicate are not affected by variations of the redox potential. These different characteristics in the precipitation of Mn and the Fe- and Si-rich colloidal phase may cause the significantly negative logarithmic correlation of Mn versus Fe and Co, respectively.  相似文献

The Huancané II moraines deposited by the Quelccaya Ice Cap in southern Peru were selected by the CRONUS-Earth Project as a primary site for evaluating cosmogenic-nuclide scaling methods and for calibrating production rates. The CRONUS-Earth Project is an effort to improve the state of the art for applications of cosmogenic nuclides to earth-surface chronology and processes. The Huancané II moraines are situated in the southern Peruvian Andes at about 4850 m and ∼13.9°S, 70.9°W. They are favorable for cosmogenic-nuclide calibration because of their low-latitude and high-elevation setting, because their age is very well constrained to 12.3 ± 0.1 ka by 34 radiocarbon ages on peat bracketing the moraines, and because boulder coverage by snow or soil is thought to be very unlikely. However, boulder-surface erosion by granular disintegration is observed and a ∼4% correction was applied to measured concentrations to compensate. Samples from 10 boulders were analyzed for 10Be, 26Al, and 36Cl. Interlaboratory bias at the ∼5% level was the largest contributor to variability of the 10Be samples, which were prepared by three laboratories (the other two nuclides were only prepared by one laboratory). Other than this issue, variability for all three nuclides was very low, with standard deviations of the analyses only slightly larger than the analytical uncertainties. The site production rates (corrected for topographic shielding, erosion, and radionuclide decay) at the mean site elevation of 4857 m were 45.5 ± 1.6 atoms 10Be (g quartz)−1 yr−1, 303 ± 15 atoms 26Al (g quartz)−1 yr−1, and 1690 ± 100 atoms 36Cl (g K)−1 yr−1. The nuclide data from this site, along with data from other primary sites, were used to calibrate the production rates of these three nuclides using seven global scaling methods. The traditional Lal formulation and the new Lifton-Sato-Dunai calibrations yield average ages for the Huancané samples that are in excellent-to-good agreement with the radiocarbon age control (within 0.7% for 10Be and 36Cl and 6% for 26Al). However, all of the neutron-monitor-based methods yielded ages that were too young by about 20%. The nuclide production ratios at this site are 6.74 ± 0.34 for 26Al/10Be in quartz and 37.8 ± 2.3 (atoms 36Cl (g K)−1) (atom 10Be (g SiO2)−1)−1 for 36Cl/10Be, in sanidine and quartz, respectively.  相似文献

Abundances and isotopic compositions of all the stable noble gases have been measured in 19 different depths of the Apollo 15 deep drill core, 7 different depths of the Apollo 16 deep drill core, and in several surface fines and breccias. All samples analyzed from both drill cores contain large concentrations of solar wind implanted gases, which demonstrates that even the deepest layers of both cores have experienced a lunar surface history. For the Apollo 15 core samples, trapped4He concentrations are constant to within a factor of two; elemental ratios show even greater similarities with mean values of4He/22Ne= 683±44,22Ne/36Ar= 0.439±0.057,36Ar/84Kr= 1.60±0.11·103, and84Kr/132Xe= 5.92±0.74. Apollo 16 core samples show distinctly lower4He contents,4He/22Ne(567±74), and22Ne/36Ar(0.229±0.024), but their heavy-element ratios are essentially identical to Apollo 15 core samples. Apollo 16 surface fines also show lower values of4He/22Ne and22Ne/36Ar. This phenomenon is attributed to greater fractionation during gas loss because of the higher plagioclase contents of Apollo 16 fines. Of these four elemental ratios as measured in both cores, only the22Ne/36Ar for the Apollo 15 core shows an apparent depth dependance. No unambiguous evidence was seen in these core materials of appreciable variations in the composition of the solar wind. Calculated concentrations of cosmic ray-produced21Ne,80Kr, and126Xe for the Apollo 15 core showed nearly flat (within a factor of two) depth profiles, but with smaller random concentration variations over depths of a few cm. These data are not consistent with a short-term core accretion model from non-irradiated regolith. The Apollo 15 core data are consistent with a combined accretion plus static time of a few hundred million years, and also indicate variable pre-accretion irradiation of core material. The lack of large variations in solar wind gas contents across core layers is also consistent with appreciable pre-accretion irradiation. Depth profiles of cosmogenic gases in the Apollo 16 core show considerably larger concentrations of cosmogenic gases below ~65 cm depth than above. This pattern may be interpreted either as an accretionary process, or by a more recent deposition of regolith to the upper ~70 cm of the core. Cosmogenic gas concentrations of several Apollo 16 fines and breccias are consistent with ages of North Ray Crater and South Ray Crater of ~50·106 and ~2·106 yr, respectively.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray produced 36Cl(t1/2 = 3.0 × 105 years) has been measured in four Antarctic meteorites and one sample of Antarctic ice using a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator as an ultrasensitive mass spectrometer with the extremely low background level of 36Cl/Cl< 2 × 10?16. Results from this ion counting technique (applied here to extraterrestrial materals for the first time) are used to support a two-stage irradiation model for the Yamato-7301 and Allan Hills-76008 meteorites and to show a long terrestrial age (0.7 ± 0.1 m.y.) for Allan Hills-77002. Yamato-7304 has a terrestrial age of less than 0.1 m.y. The 36Cl content of the Antarctic ice sample from the Yamato Mountain area implies that the age of the ice cap at this site is less than one 36Cl half-life.  相似文献

The central premises of applications of the in situ cosmogenic dating method for studying specific problems in geomorphology are outlined for simple and complex exposure settings. In the light of these general models, we discuss the information that can be derived about geomorphic processes, utilizing concentrations of in situ produced cosmogenic radionuclides 10Be (half-life=1·5 ma) and 26A1 (half-life=0·7 ma) in a variety of geomorphic contexts: glacial polish and tills; meteorite impact craters; alluvial fans; paleo-beach ridges; marine terraces; sand dunes; and bedrock slopes. We also compare 10Be-26Al data with results obtained by other dating methods. We conclude that the technique of measuring in situ cosmic ray produced nuclides holds promise for quantitative studies of processes and time-scales in a wide range of geomorphological problems.  相似文献
