Using a sample of 14 BeppoSAX and 74 Swift GRBs with measured redshift we tested the correlation between the intrinsic peak energy of the time-integrated spectrum,   E p, i   , the isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity,   L p,iso  , and the duration of the most intense parts of the GRB computed as T 0.45 ('Firmani correlation'). For 41 out of 88 GRBs we could estimate all of the three required properties. Apart from 980425, which appears to be a definite outlier and notoriously peculiar in many respects, we used 40 GRBs to fit the correlation with the maximum likelihood method discussed by D'Agostini, suitable to account for the extrinsic scatter in addition to the intrinsic uncertainties affecting every single GRB. We confirm the correlation. However, unlike the results by Firmani et al., we found that the correlation does have a logarithmic scatter comparable with that of the   E p, i – E iso  ('Amati') correlation. We also find that the slope of the product   L p,iso  T 0.45  is equal to ∼0.5, which is consistent with the hypothesis that the   E p, i – L p,iso– T 0.45  correlation is equivalent to the   E p, i – E iso  correlation (slope ∼0.5). We conclude that, based on presently available data, there is no clear evidence that the   E p, i – L p,iso– T 0.45  correlation is different (both in terms of slope and dispersion) from the   E p, i – E iso  correlation.  相似文献

In this paper we have extended the entropy-driven model of cluster evolution developed by Bower in order to be able to predict the evolution of galaxy clusters for a range of cosmological scenarios. We have applied this model to recent measurements of the evolution of the L x− T normalization and X-ray luminosity function in order to place constraints on cosmological parameters. We find that these measurements alone do not select a particular cosmological framework. An additional constraint is required on the effective slope of the power spectrum to break the degeneracy that exists between this and the background cosmology. We therefore include a theoretical calculation of the Ω0 dependence on the power spectrum, based on the cold dark matter paradigm, which infers Ω0<0.55 (0.1<Ω0<0.7 for Ω00=1), at the 95 per cent confidence level. Alternatively, an independent measurement of the slope of the power spectrum from galaxy clustering requires Ω0<0.6 (Ω0<0.65 for Ω00=1), again to 95 per cent confidence. The rate of entropy evolution is insensitive to the values of Ω0 considered, although it is sensitive to changes in the distribution of the intracluster medium.  相似文献

The slope Δ Y /Δ Z is a quantity of interest in relation to stellar evolution, the initial mass function and the determination of the primordial helium abundance. In this paper we estimate Δ Y /Δ Z from fine structure in the main sequence of nearby stars from Hipparcos data for stars with Z  ≤ Z⊙. We find a value of about 3, which is consistent with what has been found in extragalactic H  II regions and with stellar models for suitable upper limits to the initial masses of supernovae according to the initial mass function slope adopted.  相似文献

We use the results from recent computations of updated non-linear convective pulsating models to constrain the distance modulus of Galactic globular clusters through the observed periods of first-overtone (RR c ) pulsators. The resulting relation between the mean absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars 〈 M V (RR)〉 and the heavy element content [Fe/H] appears well in the range of several previous empirical calibrations, but with a non-linear dependence on [Fe/H] so that the slope of the relation increases when moving towards larger metallicities. On this ground, our results suggest that metal-poor ([Fe/H]<−1.5) and metal-rich ([Fe/H]>−1.5) variables follow two different linear 〈 M V (RR)〉−[Fe/H] relations. Application to RR Lyrae stars in the metal-poor globular clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) provides an LMC distance modulus of the order of 18.6 mag, thus supporting the 'long' distance scale. The comparison with recent predictions based on updated stellar evolution theory is briefly presented and discussed.  相似文献

We examine the effects of cooling flows on the T X– L Bol relation for a sample of the most X-ray luminous ( L Bol > 1045 erg s−1) clusters of galaxies known. Using high-quality ASCA X-ray spectra and ROSAT images we explicitly account for the effects of cooling flows on the X-ray properties of the clusters and show that this reduces the previously noted dispersion in the T X– L Bol relationship. More importantly, the slope of the relationship is flattened from L Bol ∝  T 3X to approximately L Bol ∝  T 2X, in agreement with recent theoretical models which include the effects of shocks and pre-heating on the X-ray gas. We find no evidence for evolution in the T X– L Bol relation within z  ∼ 0.3. Our results demonstrate that the effects of cooling flows must be accounted for before cosmological parameters can be determined from X-ray observations of clusters. The results presented here should provide a reliable basis for modelling the T X– L Bol relation at high X-ray luminosities.  相似文献

We explore the dependence of the central logarithmic slope of dark matter halo density profiles α on the spectral index n of the linear matter power spectrum P ( k ) using cosmological N -body simulations of scale-free models [i.e. P ( k ) ∝ k n ]. These simulations are based on a set of clear, reproducible and physically motivated criteria that fix the appropriate starting and stopping times for runs, and allow one to compare haloes across models with different spectral indices and mass resolutions. For each of our simulations we identify samples of well-resolved haloes in dynamical equilibrium and we analyse their mass profiles. By parametrizing the mass profile using a 'generalized' Navarro, Frenk & White profile in which the central logarithmic slope α is allowed to vary while preserving the r −3 asymptotic form at large radii, we obtain preferred central slopes for haloes in each of our models. There is a strong correlation between α and n , such that α becomes shallower as n becomes steeper. However, if we normalize our mass profiles by r −2, the radius at which the logarithmic slope of the density profile is −2, we find that these differences are no longer present. This is apparent if we plot the maximum slope     as a function of r / r −2– we find that the profiles are similar for haloes forming in different n models. This reflects the importance of concentration, and reveals that the concentrations of haloes forming in steep- n cosmologies tend to be smaller than those of haloes forming in shallow- n cosmologies. We conclude that there is no evidence for convergence to a unique central asymptotic slope, at least on the scales that we can resolve.  相似文献

In summer 1999, we performed a survey optimized for the discovery of irregular satellites of Uranus and Neptune. We imaged 11.85 deg2 of sky and discovered 66 new outer Solar system objects (not counting the three new Uranian satellites). Given the very short orbital arcs of our observations, only the heliocentric distance can be reliably determined. We were able to model the radial distribution of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). Our data support the idea of a strong depletion in the surface density beyond 45 au.
After fully characterizing this survey's detection efficiency as a function of object magnitude and rate of motion, we find that the apparent luminosity function of the trans-Neptunian region in the range   mR = 22–25  is steep with a best-fitting cumulative power-law index of  α≃ 0.76  with one object per deg2 estimated at magnitude   R o= 23.3  . This steep slope, corresponding to a differential size index of   q ≃ 4.8  , agrees with other older and more recent analyses for the luminosity function brighter than 25 mag. A double power-law fit to the new data set turns out to be statistically unwarrented; this large and homogeneous data set provides no evidence for a break in the power-law slope, which must eventually occur if the Bernstein et al. sky density measurements are correct.  相似文献

Assuming a naive star formation history, we construct synthetic X-ray source pop- ulations, using a population synthesis code, for comparison with the observed X-ray lumi- nosity function (XLF) of the interacting galaxies NGC 4038/4039. We have included high- and intermediate-mass X-ray binaries, young rotation-powered pulsars and fallback disk-fed black holes in modeling the bright X-ray sources detected. We find that the majority of the X-ray sources are likely to be intermediate-mass X-ray binaries, but for typical binary evolu- tion parameters, the predicted XLF seems to be steeper than observed. We note that the shape of the XLFs depends critically on the existence of XLF break for young populations, and suggest super-Eddington accretion luminosities or the existence of intermediate-mass black holes to account for the high luminosity end and the slope of the XLF in NGC 4038/4039.  相似文献

We present  0.9–2.5 μm  spectroscopy with   R ∼800  and  1.12–1.22 μm  spectroscopy with   R ∼5800  for the M dwarfs Gl 229A and LHS 102A, and for the L dwarf LHS 102B. We also report IZJHKL ' photometry for both components of the LHS 102 system, and L ' photometry for Gl 229A. The data are combined with previously published spectroscopy and photometry to produce flux distributions for each component of the kinematically old disc M/L dwarf binary system LHS 102 and the kinematically young disc M/T dwarf binary system Gliese 229. The data are analysed using synthetic spectra generated by the latest 'AMES-dusty' and 'AMES-cond' models by Allard & Hauschildt. Although the models are not able to reproduce the overall slope of the infrared flux distribution of the L dwarf, most likely because of the treatment of dust in the photosphere, the data for the M dwarfs and the T dwarf are well matched. We find that the Gl 229 system is metal-poor despite having kinematics of the young disc, and that the LHS 102 system has solar metallicity. The observed luminosities and derived temperatures and gravities are consistent with evolutionary model predictions if the Gl 229 system is very young  (age∼30 Myr)  with masses (A,B) of (0.38,≳0.007) M, and the LHS 102 system is older, aged  1–10 Gyr  with masses (A,B) of (0.19,0.07) M.  相似文献

We analyse near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope ( HST )/Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer F 110 W ( J ) and F 160 W ( H ) band photometry of a sample of 27 i '-drop candidate   z ≃ 6  galaxies in the central region of the HST /Advanced Camera for Surveys Ultra Deep Field . The infrared colours of the 20 objects not affected by near neighbours are consistent with a high-redshift interpretation. This suggests that the low-redshift contamination of this i '-drop sample is smaller than that observed at brighter magnitudes, where values of 10–40 per cent have been reported. The J – H colours are consistent with a slope flat in   fν ( fλ ∝λ−2)  , as would be expected for an unreddened starburst. However, there is evidence for a marginally bluer spectral slope  ( fλ ∝λ−2.2)  , which is perhaps indicative of an extremely young starburst (∼10 Myr old) or a top heavy initial mass function and little dust. The low levels of contamination, median photometric redshift of   z ∼ 6.0  and blue spectral slope, inferred using the near-infrared data, support the validity of the assumptions in our earlier work in estimating the star formation rates, and that the majority of the i -drop candidates galaxies lie at   z ∼ 6  .  相似文献

A deep   K s   -band photometric catalogue of galaxies at the core of the rich, nearby Norma cluster (ACO3627) is presented. The survey covers about  45 × 45 arcmin2  (slightly less than 1/3 Abell radius), which corresponds to  ∼0.8  h −270 Mpc2  at the adopted distance  ( v CMB/ H 0)  of  70  h −170 Mpc  of this cluster. The survey is estimated to be complete to a magnitude of     . This extends into the dwarf regime, 6 mag below     . The catalogue contains 390 objects, 235 of which are classified as likely or definite galaxies and 155 as candidate galaxies. The   K s   -band luminosity function (LF) is constructed from the photometric sample, using a spectroscopic subsample to correct for fore and background contamination. We fit a Schechter function with a characteristic magnitude of     and faint-end slope of  α=−1.26 ± 0.10  to the data. The shape of the LF is similar to those found in previous determinations of the cluster LF, in both optical and near-infrared. The Schechter parameters agree well with those of recent field LFs, suggesting that the shape of both the bright-end and the faint-end slopes are relatively insensitive to environment.  相似文献

We have obtained U - and R -band observations of the depletion of background galaxies resulting from the gravitational lensing of the galaxy cluster CL0024+1654 ( z =0.39). The radial depletion curves show a significant depletion in both bands within a radius of 40–70 arcsec from the cluster centre. This is the first time that depletion is detected in the U band. This gives independent evidence for a break in the slope of the U -band luminosity function at faint magnitudes. The radially averaged R -band depletion curve is broader and deeper than in the U band. The differences can be attributed to the wavelength dependence of the slope of the luminosity function and to the different redshift distribution of the objects probed in the two bands. We estimate the Einstein radius, r E, of a singular isothermal sphere lens model using maximum-likelihood analysis. Adopting a slope of the number counts of α =0.2 and using the background density found beyond r =150 arcsec, we find r E=17±3 and 25±3 arcsec in the U and R bands, respectively. When combined with the redshift of the single background galaxy at z =1.675 seen as four giant arcs around 30 arcsec from the cluster centre, these values indicate a median redshift in the range 〈 z S〉≈0.7 to 1.1 for the U AB≥24 mag and R AB≥24 mag populations.  相似文献

Spiral galaxies with a reported bend in the slope of the oxygen abundance O/HR 23, derived with the traditionally used R23-method, are examined. It is shown that the artificial origin of the reported bends can be naturally explained. Two causes of the false bend in the slope of O/HR 23 are indicated. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In the first part of this work, the empirical correlation of stellar surface brightness F V with ( I c− K ) broad-band colour is investigated by using a sample of stars cooler than the Sun. A bilinear correlation is found to represent well the brightness of G, K and M giant stars. The change in slope occurs at ( I c− K )∼2.1 or at about the transition from K to M spectral types. The same relationship is also investigated for dwarf stars and found to be distinctly different from that of the giants. The dwarf star correlation differs by an average of −0.4 in ( I c− K ) or by a maximum in F V of ∼−0.1, positioning it below that of the giants, with both trends tending towards convergence for the hotter stars in our sample. The flux distribution derived from the F V −( I c− K ) relationship for the giant stars, together with that derived from an F V −( V − K ) relationship and the blackbody flux distribution, is then utilized to compute synthetic light V and colour ( V − R )c, ( V − I )c and ( V − K ) curves of cool spotted stars. We investigate the effects on the amplitudes of the curves by using these F V –colour relations and by assuming the effective gravity of the spots to be lower than the gravity of the unspotted photosphere. We find that the amplitudes produced by using the F V −( I c− K ) relationship are larger than those produced by the other two brightness correlations, meaning smaller and/or warmer spots.  相似文献

An analysis is presented of the power spectrum of X-ray variability of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 766 as observed by XMM–Newton . Over the 0.2–10 keV energy range the power spectral density (PSD) is well-represented by a power-law with a slope of  αlow≈ 1  at low frequencies, breaking to a slope of  αhi= 2.8+0.2−0.4  at a frequency   f br≈ 5 × 10−4 Hz  . As has been noted before, this broken power-law PSD shape is similar to that observed in the Galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X-1. If it is assumed that Mrk 766 shows a power spectrum similar in form to that of Cyg X-1, and that the break time-scale scales linearly with black hole mass, then the mass of the black hole in Mrk 766 is inferred to be  ≲ 5 × 105 M  . This rather low mass would mean Mrk 766 radiates above the Eddington limit. The coherence between different energy bands is significantly below unity implying that variations in the different energy bands are rather poorly correlated. The low coherence can be explained in the framework of standard Comptonization models if the properties of the Comptonizing medium are rapidly variable or if there are several distinct emission sites.  相似文献

Redshift surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) have given a very precise measurement of the galaxy luminosity function down to about   MR =−17 (≈ MB =−16)  . Fainter absolute magnitudes cannot be probed because of the flux limit required for spectroscopy. Wide-field surveys of nearby groups using mosaic CCDs on large telescopes are able to reach much fainter absolute magnitudes, about   MR =−10  . These diffuse, spiral-rich groups are thought to be typical environments for galaxies, so their luminosity functions should be the same as the field luminosity function. The luminosity function of the groups at the bright end  ( MR < −17)  is limited by Poisson statistics and is far less precise than that derived from redshift surveys. Here we combine the results of the SDSS and the surveys of nearby groups, and we supplement the results with studies of Local Group galaxies in order to determine the galaxy luminosity function over the entire range  −25 < MR < −9  . The average logarithmic slope of the field luminosity function between   MR =−19  and   MR =−9  is  α=−1.26  , although a single power law is a poor fit to the data over the entire magnitude range. We also determine the luminosity function of galaxy clusters and demonstrate that it is different from the field luminosity function at a high level of significance; there are many more dwarf galaxies in clusters than in the field, due to a rise in the cluster luminosity function of  α∼−1.6  between   MR =−17  and   MR =−14  .  相似文献

We investigate the thermodynamic and chemical structure of the intracluster medium (ICM) across a statistical sample of 20 galaxy clusters analysed with the Chandra X-ray satellite. In particular, we focus on the scaling properties of the gas density, metallicity and entropy and the comparison between clusters with and without cool cores (CCs). We find marked differences between the two categories except for the gas metallicity, which declines strongly with radius for all clusters  ( Z ∝ r −0.31)  , outside  ∼0.02 r 500  . The scaling of gas entropy is non-self-similar and we find clear evidence of bimodality in the distribution of logarithmic slopes of the entropy profiles. With only one exception, the steeper sloped entropy profiles are found in CC clusters whereas the flatter slope population are all non-CC clusters. We explore the role of thermal conduction in stabilizing the ICM and conclude that this mechanism alone is sufficient to balance cooling in non-CC clusters. However, CC clusters appear to form a distinct population in which heating from feedback is required in addition to conduction. Under the assumption that non-CC clusters are thermally stabilized by conduction alone, we find the distribution of Spitzer conduction suppression factors, f c, to be lognormal, with a log (base 10) mean of  −1.50 ± 0.03  (i.e.   f c= 0.032  ) and log standard deviation  0.39 ± 0.02  .  相似文献

We have investigated the statistical clustering properties of galaxies by calculating the two-point galaxy correlation function from the optically selected Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. This survey is magnitude-limited to b J∼17, contains ∼2500 galaxies sampled at a rate of one-in-three and surveys a ∼4×106 ( h −1 Mpc)3 volume of space. We have empirically determined the optimal method of estimating the two-point correlation function from just such a magnitude-limited survey. Applying our methods to this survey, we find that our redshift-space results agree well with those from previous optical surveys. In particular, we confirm the previously claimed detections of large-scale power out to ∼40 h −1 Mpc scales. We compare with two common models of cosmological structure formation and find that our two-point correlation function has power significantly in excess of the standard cold dark matter model in the 10–30 h −1 Mpc region. We therefore support the observational results of the APM galaxy survey. Given that only the redshift-space clustering can be measured directly, we use standard modelling methods and indirectly estimate the real-space two-point correlation function from the projected two-point correlation function. We then invert this projected correlation function to obtain an estimate of the spatial two-point correlation function in real space. This correlation function in real space has a lower amplitude than that in redshift space, but a steeper slope.  相似文献

Many quasi-simultaneous optical observations of 17 blazars are obtained from previous papers published over the last 19 years in order to investigate the spectral slope variability and understand the radiation mechanism of blazars. The long-period dereddened optical spectral slopes are calculated. We analyse the average spectral slope distribution, which suggests that the spectra of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and high energy peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs) are probably deformed by other emission components. The average spectral slopes of low energy peaked BL Lac objects(LBLs), which scatter around 1.5, show a good accordance with the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) loss-dominated model. We present and discuss the variability between the spectral slope and optical luminosity. The spectra of all HBLs and LBLs get flatter when they turn brighter, while for FSRQs this trend does not exist or may even be reversed. This phenomenon may imply that there is a thermal contribution to the optical spectrum for FSRQs. For the FSRQ 1156+295, there is a hint that the slope gets flatter at both the brightest and faintest states. Our result shows that three subclasses locate in different regions in the pattern of slope variability indicator versus average spectral slope. The relativistic jet mechanism is supported by the significant correlation between the optical Doppler factor and the average spectral slope.  相似文献
