We present the results of a deep radio observation of the globular cluster NGC 2808. We show that there are no sources detected within the core of the cluster, placing constraints on both the pulsar population of the cluster and the mass of a possible intermediate-mass black hole in NGC 2808. We compare the results for this cluster with other constraints on intermediate-mass black holes derived from accretion measures. With the exception of G1 in M 31 which has previously shown radio emission, even with considerably more conservative assumptions, only the clusters with the poorest of observational constraints are consistent with falling on the   M BH–σ  relation. This result is interpreted in terms of the fundamental differences between galaxies and globular clusters.  相似文献

We discuss the prospects for detecting faint intermediate-mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist in the cores of globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We briefly summarize the difficulties of stellar dynamical searches, then show that recently discovered relations between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity imply that in most cases, these black holes should be more easily detected in the radio than in the X-rays. Finally, we show upper limits from some radio observations of globular clusters, and discuss the possibility that the radio source in the core of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy might be a ∼10,000–100,000 M⊙ black hole.  相似文献

N -body simulations are made with a variety of initial conditions, in particular clumpy and flattened distributions, to attempt to constrain the possible initial conditions of globular clusters, using the observations that young LMC globular clusters appear relaxed after only 20 to 40 Myr. It is found that violent relaxation is able to erase most of the initial substructure in only ≈ 6 crossing times. However, initially very clumpy distributions (≲ 100 clumps) form clusters that are too concentrated to resemble real globular clusters. Such clusters also often have large clumps in long-lasting (≳ 30 crossing times) orbits which do not appear in observed cluster profiles. It is also found that even modest amounts of initial flattening produce clusters that are too elliptical to resemble real globular clusters. In such a scenario, cloud–cloud collisions and similar energetic processes would be unlikely to produce sufficiently spherical globular clusters. It is suggested that globular clusters form from roughly spherical initial conditions with star formation occurring either smoothly or in many small clumps.  相似文献

We present internal surface brightness profiles, based on Hubble Space Telescope /ACS imaging in the F 606 W bandpass, for 131 globular cluster (GC) candidates with luminosities   L ≃ 104–3 × 106 L  in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. Several structural models are fitted to the profile of each cluster and combined with mass-to-light ratios ( M / L values) from population-synthesis models, to derive a catalogue of fundamental structural and dynamical parameters parallel in form to the catalogues recently produced by McLaughlin & van der Marel and by Barmby et al. for GCs and massive young star clusters in Local Group galaxies. As part of this, we provide corrected and extended parameter estimates for another 18 clusters in NGC 5128, which we observed previously. We show that, like GCs in the Milky Way and some of its satellites, the majority of globulars in NGC 5128 are well fitted by isotropic Wilson models, which have intrinsically more distended envelope structures than the standard King lowered isothermal spheres. We use our models to predict internal velocity dispersions for every cluster in our sample. These predictions agree well in general with the observed dispersions in a small number of clusters for which spectroscopic data are available. In a subsequent paper, we use these results to investigate scaling relations for GCs in NGC 5128.  相似文献

1 INTRODUCTION Many radio observations have been conducted on globular clusters in the past years, stimu-lated by the detection of pulsars and X-ray sources in them. Globular clusters are good placesfor hunting pulsars (Lyne et al. 2000). Until now, about 50 pulsars have been detected in 17globular clusters (Lyne et al. 1995; Biggs & Lyne 1996; D'Amico et al. 2001; Lyne et al. 2000;Camilo et al. 2000). Except for four long period pulsars, all of these pulsars are millisecondpulsars (M…  相似文献

The crossing of the Galactic disc by a globular cluster (GC) could produce star formation due to gravitational focusing or compression of disc material. We report on simulations of the effect on disc material which reveal that the crossing can sometimes cause local gravitational focusing of disc material. We also present the salient points of a little-known paper by Levy, which shows that strong compression can result from the shock wave generated by GC disc crossing. The main thrust of our paper is a search for remnants of disc crossings by GCs. Using the gravitational potential of the Galaxy to locate the position of the most recent crossings of a subset of fifty-four GCs reveals that systematic errors and uncertainties in initial conditions limit the scope for unequivocal identification. From the subset of fifty-four, six possible search sites with the best constraints are retained for further scrutiny. Three of the six potentially promising search areas in the disc are from GCs NGC 3201, 6397 and 6838, for which we cannot rule out some observed star associations observed nearby as being remnants. The other three of the six areas are too large to provide meaningful identification of remnants. Also, a possible remnant (open cluster NGC 6231) is shown not to be due to GC impact, contrary to a previous report. In a more wide-ranging screening of 155 GCs, we identify which GCs are compatible with being responsible for the formation of any of the Galaxy's five most prominent star superclusters.  相似文献

Several recent studies have shown that the star cluster initial mass function (CIMF) can be well approximated by a power law, with indications for a steepening or truncation at high masses. This contribution considers the evolution of such a mass function due to cluster disruption, with emphasis on the part of the mass function that is observable in the first ∼1 Gyr. A Schechter type function is used for the CIMF, with a power-law index of −2 at low masses and an exponential truncation at M *. Cluster disruption due to the tidal field of the host galaxy and encounters with giant molecular clouds flattens the low-mass end of the mass function, but there is always a part of the 'evolved Schechter function' that can be approximated by a power law with index −2. The mass range for which this holds depends on age, τ, and shifts to higher masses roughly as  τ0.6  . Mean cluster masses derived from luminosity-limited samples increase with age very similarly due to the evolutionary fading of clusters. Empirical mass functions are, therefore, approximately power laws with index −2, or slightly steeper, at all ages. The results are illustrated by an application to the star cluster population of the interacting galaxy M51, which can be well described by a model with   M *= (1.9 ± 0.5) × 105 M  and a short (mass-dependent) disruption time destroying M * clusters in roughly a Gyr.  相似文献

We observed two main sequence stars in the globular cluster NGC 2808, using X‐shooter. We selected one of the targets on the blue main sequence (bMS) and one on the red main sequence (rMS) and measured abundances for several light elements that are expected to be different in stars of first and second generations in globular clusters. The differences between the bMS and the rMS stars amply exceed the errors and is in agreement with a difference in products of hydrogen burning at high temperature. More data are required to put the findings on more solid basis and to try to distinguish between the different models proposed to explain the formation of globular clusters (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The effect of gas ejection on the structure and binding energy of newly formed stellar clusters is investigated. The star formation efficiency (SFE), necessary for forming a gravitationally bound stellar cluster, is determined.
Two sets of numerical N -body simulations are presented. As a first simplified approach we treat the residual gas as an external potential. The gas expulsion is approximated by reducing the gas mass to zero on a given time-scale, which is treated as a free parameter. In a second set of simulations we use smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to follow the dynamics of the outflowing residual gas self-consistently. We investigate cases where gas outflow is induced by an outwards propagating shock front and where the whole gas cloud is heated homogeneously, leading to ejection.
If the stars are in virial equilibrium with the gaseous environment initially, bound clusters only form in regions where the local SFE is larger than 50 per cent or where the gas expulsion time-scale is long compared with the dynamical time-scale. A small initial velocity dispersion of the stars leads to a compaction of the cluster during the expulsion phase and reduces the SFE needed to form bound clusters to less than 10 per cent.  相似文献

So far, six mechanisms have been proposed to account for the Galactic disc heating. Of these, the most important appear to be a combination of scattering of stars by molecular clouds and by spiral arms. We study a further mechanism, namely the repeated disc impact of the original Galactic globular cluster population up to the present. We find that globular clusters could have contributed at most a small fraction of the current vertical energy of the disc, as they could heat the whole disc to  σ z = 5.5 km s−1  (c.f. the observed 18 and 39 km s−1 for the thick and thin discs, respectively). We find that the rate of rise of disc heat (  α= 0.22  in  σ z ∼ t α  with t being time) is close to that found for scattering by molecular clouds.  相似文献
