The increasing emphasis of UK higher education policy on formal research training and the acquisition of employment-related skills by Ph.D. students raises important questions about the purpose of the Ph.D. This paper raises concerns about the prevailing instrumentalism of government policy and urges academics to become more actively engaged in the ongoing debates about the nature and role of research training and the appropriate balance between the Ph.D. as a developmental process of study and apprenticeship and as a substantive contribution to knowledge.  相似文献

The Marl Slate, the English equivalent of the Kupferschiefer, has been studied with particular reference to the relationships between dolomitization and the origin of the metal sulphides. Dolomite occurs as: 1) discontinuous lenses of ferroan dolomicrite, 2) micronodules of finely crystalline dolospar in association with length-slow chalcedony and 3) discrete laminae of ferroan or non-ferroan dolospar. The ferroan dolomicrite has excess CaCO3, and is more abundant in the lower, sapropelic facies of the Marl Slate. It is considered to have formed by the penecontemporaneous alteration of calcium carbonate under hypersaline conditions. Small micronodules (typically about 0.3 mm in diameter) are also more abundant in the sapropelic Marl Slate. These frequently contain cores of length-slow chalcedony (quartzine) fibres and sometimes quartz megacrysts. Textural observations clearly indicate that this silica is of authigenic origin and the dolomite/chalcedony micronodules are interpreted as diagenetic replacements of a calcium sulphate mineral such as anhydrite. The discrete laminae of finely crystalline dolospar are often inter-laminated with calcite in the upper part of the Marl Slate. This dolomite is also calcium rich and represents a replacement, possibly of anhydrite, during a later phase of diagenesis. Metal sulphides occur in two distinct forms: as disseminated framboidal pyrite and as discrete lenses of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and rarer sulphides. The framboidal pyrite originated during early diagenesis by reaction of sulphide, produced by reduction of sulphate by organic material and micro-organisms, with iron also released in the reducing environment. The sulphide lenses are often in intimate association with dolospar, length-slow chalcedony and authigenic quartz megacrysts. This indicates that the lenses were produced during diagenesis by the reduction and replacement of calcium sulphate (anhydrite). Various sources, such as co-precipitation with dolomite precursors and the underlying Yellow Sands, may have supplied metals which were mobilized and transported by connate brines as diagenesis progressed.  相似文献

A burrowing spatangoid echinoid (heart urchin), Cardiaster granulosus (Goldfuss), from the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage (Upper Cretaceous) in Belgium, was infested only in the plates of the ambulacral petals by acrothoracian barnacle borings, Rogerella isp. This infestation was after the death and exhumation of the echinoid. The distribution of Rogerella may indicate the azimuth of current flow at the time of exhumation prior to final burial. Mnemiopsis leidyi, native to America, Invaded the Caspian Sea in 1999. By the end of 2000, the entire sea was accupied with them. In parallel, a sharp decline in pelagic fish such accurrred.This survey was studied the relationship between the M. leidyi and this decline. Dietary analysis was conducted on anchovy sprat (Clupeonnela engrauliformis) and M. leidyi from August 2001 to October 2002 in the coastal water in the southern parts of Caspian Sea, in Iran. M. leidyi was caught by plankton net, (the mesh size ~5 mm), at three depth at 5, 10 and 15m. Sprat was caught by fisheries boat at Babolasar fishery harbor. Samples were not fixed in M. leidyi common fixative, 96% Ethanol were used. The Schoener index analysis reflected a similar diet composition of both species, with an critical level of overlap (>89 in Babolsar samples and >84 in Noushahar samples). This competition is one of the reasons for the decline of anchovy sprat. also, the results show M. leidyi is feeding on fish eggs, but effects of this factor on anchovy population is less than feeding competition. Controlling of M. leidyi population is reducing the pressure of its invasion and the effective approach is introduces a predator to the Caspian Sea.  相似文献

This short section of Skarlato's monograph, Bivalve Mollusks of the Far Eastern Seas of the U. S. S. R. (Order Dysodonta), discusses the genus Arvella Bartsch, 1940 ms. The genus includes the species formerly assigned to Crenella. Diagnostic features of the species included in genus Arvella Bartsch are given. Vilasina Bartsch, 1940 ms is discussed, also The author states that the hinges of Vilasina clearly assign the species to the genus Crenella. The form and position of the umbo relate the species closely to the genus Arvella, though. The almost entirely smooth laminated surface distinguishes Vilasina from both genera, as does the finely serrated ventral edge of the shell. A considerable part of the nephelinite lavas of the volcanoMt. Nyiragongo in the eastern Belgian Congo contains kalsiliteas one of the main constituents. The mineral never occurs asthe only feldspathoid of the rock but is accompanied by nepheline,abundant melilite, and, sometimes, by small to moderate amountsof leucite. Other important constituents of these kalsilite-bearingrocks are clinopyroxene, olivine, perovskite, titanomagnetite,sodalite, &c. The feldspars are lacking. Kalsilite occurs both as complex nepheline-kalsilite phenocrystsin which these phases are strictly co-axial and in the fine-grainedgroundmass as grains separate from those of nepheline. The complex nepheline-kalsilite phenocrysts exhibit a continuousseries of progressing exsolution schematically presented inFig. 5. The series begins with a perthite-like nepheline-kalsilitecore surrounded by a drop-like development of nepheline in themargin of the crystal and ends up with a homogeneous kalsilitecore surrounded by a nepheline margin. The complex phenocrysts occur mostly as aggregates causing atypically glomeroporphyritic texture. Evidence is presentedindicating that, in the very first stages of crystallization,some of the Nyiragongo lavas are able to precipitate small amountsof phenocrysts of approximate composition K3NaAl4Si4O16. Throughcrystal-rise under turbulent currents in the molten lava massthese phenocrysts have been accumulated into aggregates andthus have been preserved until extrusion. Granted sufficientlyslow cooling under static conditions, the phenocrysts wouldhave reacted with the molten lava. The roles of the crystal-riseand of the turbulent currents in lava are illustrated by theoccurrence of the ‘giant’ leucite aggregates foundin the inner walls of the crater and by observations on thelava lake of the mountain. The occurrence of kalsilite in the groundmass is explained bythe existence of a two-phase area in the sub-solidus range inthe nepheline-kalsilite system. The Nepheline Aggregate lavas represent the last extrusionsemitted by the Nyiragongo main crater. The nepheline phenocrystscharacteristic of these lavas range considerably higher in potassiumcontent than the nephelines found in other Nyiragongo flows.The crystals are slightly zoned with a large potassium-richcore coated by a narrow margin with gradually decreasing potassiumcontent. The zoning may be detected only by using special methods.The history of crystallization of the nepheline phenocrystsis considered analogous to that of the complex nepheline-kalsilitephenocrysts with the only difference that the nepheline phenocrystsof the Nepheline Aggregate lavas are less rich in potassiumand, consequently, have not been subjected to exsolution.  相似文献

A new genus and species of an Aptian–Albian sauropod from the Itapecuru Formation, northern Brazil, Amazonsaurus maranhensis, is described. It is known from an incomplete, but diagnostic postcranial skeleton. The new taxon possesses several autapomorphies, such as the anterior caudal vertebrae with lateral laminae formed by the coalescence of the spinoprezygapophyseal and postzygodiapophyseal laminae and, to a lesser extent, of the postzygodiapophyseal laminae. It exhibits many synapomorphies supporting its inclusion in the Diplodocoidea. These include high caudal neural arches and anterior caudal neural arches with spinoprezygapophyseal laminae on the lateral aspect of the neural spine. This record is consistent with previous hypotheses on the existence of a community of Afro-South American dinosaurs.  相似文献
