H2O diffusion in dacitic melt was investigated at 0.48-0.95 GPa and 786-893 K in a piston-cylinder apparatus. The diffusion couple design was used, in which a nominally dry dacitic glass makes one half and is juxtaposed with a hydrous dacitic glass containing up to ∼8 wt.% total water (H2Ot). H2O concentration profiles were measured on quenched glasses with infrared microspectroscopy. The H2O diffusivity in dacite increases rapidly with water content under experimental conditions, similar to previous measurements at the same temperature but at pressure <0.15 GPa. However, compared with the low-pressure data, H2O diffusion at high pressure is systematically slower. H2O diffusion profiles in dacite can be modeled by assuming molecular H2O (H2Om) is the diffusing species. Total H2O diffusivity DH2Ot within 786-1798 K, 0-1 GPa, and 0-8 wt.% H2Ot can be expressed as: where DH2Ot is in m2/s, T is temperature in K, P is pressure in GPa, K = exp(1.49 − 2634/T) is the equilibrium constant of speciation reaction (H2Om+O?2OH) in the melt, X = C/18.015/[C/18.015 + (100 − C)/33.82], C is wt.% of H2Ot, and 18.015 and 33.82 g/mol correspond to the molar masses of H2O and anhydrous dacite on a single oxygen basis. Compared to H2O diffusion in rhyolite, diffusivity in dacite is lower at intermediate temperatures but higher at superliquidus temperatures. This general H2O diffusivity expression can be applied to a broad range of geological conditions, including both magma chamber processes and volcanic eruption dynamics from conduit to the surface.  相似文献

Liquid MgSiO3 is a model for the Earth’s magma ocean and of remnant melt present near the core-mantle boundary. Here, models for molten MgSiO3 are computed employing empirical potential molecular dynamics (EPMD) and results are compared to published results including two EPMD studies and three first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) models and to laboratory data. The EPMD results derived from the Oganov (OG) potential come closest to the density of MgSiO3 liquid at the 1-bar melting point inferred from the melting curve. At higher P, EPMD densities calculated from the OG potential and FPMD broadly match shock wave studies, with the OG potential yielding the better comparison. Matsui (M) potential results deviate from other studies above ∼50 GPa. Overall, results based on the OG potential compare best to experimental densities over the P-T range of the mantle. Isothermally, upon increasing P the mean coordination numbers () of oxygen around Si and Mg monotonically increase with pressure. Tetrahedral Si and octahedral Si monotonically increase and decrease, respectively, whereas pentahedral Si maximizes at 10-20 GPa. Tetrahedral Mg decreases monotonically as P increases whereas pentahedral, octahedral and higher coordination polyhedra each show similar behavior first increasing and then decreasing after attaining a maximum; the P of the maximum for each polyhedra type migrates to higher P as the CN increases. Free oxygen and oxygen with one nearest neighbor of either Si or Mg decreases whereas Si or Mg with two or three nearest oxygens (i.e., tricluster oxygen) increases with increasing P isothermally. The increase of tricluster oxygen is consistent with spectroscopy on MgSiO3 glass quenched from 2000 K and 0-40 GPa and high-energy X-ray studies constraining the coordination of O around Mg and around Si at 2300 K and 1 bar. Coordination statistics from FPMD studies for O around Si and Si around O are in agreement with the EPMD results based on the M and OG potentials. Mg self-diffusivity is greater than O and Si self-diffusivities for both the M and OG potentials. All D values monotonically decrease with increasing pressure isothermally and all atoms are more diffusive in the M liquid compared to the OG liquid except at T > ∼5000 K and P > 100 GPa. Previously published EPMD diffusivities fall between values given by the M and OG potentials, at least up to 45 GPa. The M liquid is generally less viscous than the OG liquid except at P > ∼80 GPa. Activation energy and volume are around 96 kJ/mol and 1.5 cm3/mol, respectively. The FPMD viscosity results at 120 GPa and 4000 and 4500 K are essentially identical to the values from the M and OG potentials. FPMD viscosity results are similar to the OG results for P < 60 GPa; at higher P, the FPMD viscosities are higher. At 4000 K and 100 GPa the shear viscosity of liquid MgSiO3 is ∼0.1 Pa s. More extensive laboratory results are required to better define the thermodynamic, transport and structural properties of MgSiO3 liquids and for comparison with computational studies.  相似文献

We report results of nominally anhydrous near-liquidus experiments on a synthetic analog to very low-titanium Apollo 15 green C lunar picritic glass from ∼2 to 5 GPa. Apollo 15 green C glass (A15C) is saturated with garnet and pyroxene on the liquidus at ∼3 GPa. However, such an assemblage is unlikely to represent the lunar-mantle source region for this glass, and instead an olivine + orthopyroxene-dominated source is favored, in accord with earlier lower-pressure experiments on A15C. Near-liquidus garnet has a slight but significant majorite component at ∼5 GPa in this iron-rich bulk composition, as expected from our previous work in ordinary-chondritic bulk compositions. Ion microprobe measurements of partitioning of Sr, Ba, Sc, Nd, Sm, Dy, Yb, Y, Zr, Hf, and Th between garnet and coexisting melt in these experiments are the first garnet partition coefficients (D values) available that are directly relevant to lunar compositions. D values for these garnets differ significantly compared to D values for garnets grown in more magnesian, terrestrial bulk compositions, which until now are all that have been available in modeling the possible role of garnet in the lunar interior. For example, D values for heavy rare earth elements are lower than are those from terrestrial basaltic systems. These partitioning values are well-described by the lattice-strain partitioning model, but predictive relationships for garnet partitioning using that model fail to match the measured values, as was the case in our earlier work on chondritic compositions. Using our new D values in place of the “terrestrial” values in a variety of models of lunar petrogenesis, we suggest that garnet is unlikely to be present in the source regions for very titanium-poor lunar liquids despite its appearance on the liquidus of A15C.  相似文献

The preferential incorporation of High-Field-Strength Elements (HFSE) in rutile (TiO2), combined with its supposed stability in subduction zone settings, make it an ideal candidate to explain the low HFSE concentrations in subduction-derived magmas. The solubility behaviour of rutile is key to these arguments, but at present experimental and field-based evidence are contradictory. We have used abinitio molecular (meta)dynamics to investigate the coordination environment of Ti(IV) in pure water at 300 and 1000 K and densities ranging from 900-1260 kg m−3 (approximate pressures 0.9-3.6 GPa). In all high temperature simulations, the long-range structure of the solvent indicates a breakdown of the hydrogen bonding network as expected for supercritical water. The five-fold coordination of titanium to water is energetically most favourable in aqueous fluids at room temperature and pressure, separated from four and six-fold configurations by ∼175 and ∼200 kJ mol−1, respectively. The average first shell Ti-O distance is 2.00 Å, in excellent agreement with bond lengths obtained from experiments. At similar densities and 1000 K, titanium is on average six-fold coordinate with water, and shows some degree of water dissociation in the first hydration shell. This coordination environment is remarkably persistent with increasing density from 1021 to 1260 kg m−3 at constant temperature (1000 K). At lower densities, however, (900 kg m−3 at 1000 K), the coordination with first shell water molecules is less than five. The observed coordination changes could promote association of titanium with peralkaline or peraluminous domains in the aqueous fluid, and thereby explain field-and laboratory based evidence of enhanced HFSE concentrations. This study demonstrates that abinitio molecular dynamics has considerable potential to access details of element behaviour in aqueous fluids at geologically relevant conditions that are impossible to examine otherwise. Changes in the solvent structure due to density variations lead to differences in solvent behaviour allowing access to new domains for fluid-solid interaction. Moreover, changes in the solvent structure are strongly linked to the effectiveness of element solvation.  相似文献

Raman spectroscopy is a powerful method for the determination of CO2 densities in fluid inclusions, especially for those with small size and/or low fluid density. The relationship between CO2 Fermi diad split (Δ, cm−1) and CO2 density (ρ, g/cm3) has been documented by several previous studies. However, significant discrepancies exist among these studies mainly because of inconsistent calibration procedures and lack of measurements for CO2 fluids having densities between 0.21 and 0.75 g/cm3, where liquid and vapor phases coexist near room temperature. In this study, a high-pressure optical cell and fused silica capillary capsules were used to prepare pure CO2 samples with densities between 0.0472 and 1.0060 g/cm3. The measured CO2 Fermi diad splits were calibrated with two well established Raman bands of benzonitrile at 1192.6 and 1598.9 cm−1. The relationship between the CO2 Fermi diad split and density can be represented by: ρ = 47513.64243 − 1374.824414 × Δ + 13.25586152 × Δ2 − 0.04258891551 × Δ3 (r2 = 0.99835, σ = 0.0253 g/cm3), and this relationship was tested by synthetic fluid inclusions and natural CO2-rich fluid inclusions. The effects of temperature and the presence of H2O and CH4 on this relationship were also examined.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic trace element and due to human activities soils and waters are contaminated by Cd both on a local and global scale. It is widely accepted that chemical interactions with functional groups of natural organic matter (NOM) is vital for the bioavailability and mobility of trace elements. In this study the binding strength of cadmium (Cd) to soil organic matter (SOM) was determined in an organic (49% organic C) soil as a function of reaction time, pH and Cd concentration. In experiments conducted at native Cd concentrations in soil (0.23 μg g−1 dry soil), halides (Cl, Br) were used as competing ligands to functional groups in SOM. The concentration of Cd in the aqueous phase was determined by isotope-dilution (ID) inductively-coupled-plasma-mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the activity of Cd2+ was calculated from the well-established Cd-halide constants. At higher Cd loading (500-54,000 μg g−1), the Cd2+ activity was directly determined by an ion-selective electrode (ISE). On the basis of results from extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, a model with one thiolate group (RS) was used to describe the complexation (Cd2+ + RS ? CdSR+; log KCdSR) at native Cd concentrations. The concentration of thiols (RSH; 0.047 mol kg−1 C) was independently determined by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Log KCdSR values of 11.2-11.6 (pKa for RSH = 9.96), determined in the pH range 3.1-4.6, compare favorably with stability constants for the association between Cd and well-defined thiolates like glutathione. In the concentration range 500-54,000 μg Cd g−1, a model consisting of one thiolate and one carboxylate (RCOO) gave the best fit to data, indicating an increasing role for RCOOH groups as RSH groups become saturated. The determined log KCdOOCR of 3.2 (Cd2+ +  RCOO ? CdOOCR+; log KCdOOCR; pKa for RCOOH = 4.5) is in accordance with stability constants determined for the association between Cd and well-defined carboxylates. Given a concentration of reduced sulfur groups of 0.2% or higher in NOM, we conclude that the complexation to organic RSH groups may control the speciation of Cd in soils, and most likely also in surface waters, with a total concentration less than 5 mg Cd g−1 organic C.  相似文献

Sorption of Ni(II) onto chlorite surfaces was studied as a function of pH (5–10), ionic strength (0.01–0.5 M) and Ni concentration (10−8–10−6 M) in an Ar atmosphere using batch sorption with radioactive 63Ni as tracer. Such studies are important since Ni(II) is one of the major activation products in spent nuclear fuel and sorption data on minerals such as chlorite are lacking. The sorption of Ni(II) onto chlorite was dependent on pH but not ionic strength, which indicates that the process primarily comprises sorption by surface complexation. The maximum sorption was at pH ∼ 8 (Kd = ∼10−3 cm3/g). Desorption studies over a period of 1–2 weeks involving replacement of the aqueous solution indicated a low degree of desorption. The acid–base properties of the chlorite mineral were determined by titration and described using a non-electrostatic surface complexation model in FITEQL. A 2-pK NEM model and three surface complexes, Chl_OHNi2+, Chl_OHNi(OH)+ and Chl_OHNi(OH)2, gave the best fit to the sorption results using FITEQL. The high Kd values and low degree of desorption observed indicate that under expected groundwater conditions, a large fraction of Ni(II) that is potentially leachable from spent nuclear fuel may be prevented from migrating by sorption onto chlorite surfaces.  相似文献

The mechanism and rate of hydration of rhyolitic glass during weathering were studied. Doubly polished thin sections of two rhyolites with different duration of weathering (Ohsawa lava: 26,000 yr, Awanomikoto lava: 52,000 yr) were prepared. Optical microscope observation showed that altered layers had developed along the glass surfaces. IR spectral line profile analysis was conducted on the glass sections from the surface to the interior for a length of 250 μm and the contents of molecular H2O (H2Om), OH species (OH) and total water (H2Ot) were determined. The diffusion profile of H2Om in Ohsawa lava extends beyond the layer observed by optical microscope. The content of H2Om in the hydrated region is much higher than that of OH species. Thus, the reaction from H2Om to OH appears to be little and H2Om is the dominant water species moving into the glass during weathering. Based on the concentration profiles, the diffusion coefficients of H2Om(DH2Om) and H2Ot(DH2Ot) were determined to be 2.8 × 10−10 and 3.4 × 10−10 μm2 s−1 for Ohsawa lava, and 5.2 × 10−11 and 4.1 × 10−11 μm2 s−1 for Awanomikoto lava, respectively. The obtained DH2Om during weathering are more than 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than the diffusion coefficient at ∼20 °C that is extrapolated from the diffusivity data for >400 °C. This might suggest that the mechanism of water transport is different at weathering conditions and >400 °C.  相似文献

Micro-Raman spectroscopy, even though a very promising technique, is not still routinely applied to analyse H2O in silicate glasses. The accuracy of Raman water determinations critically depends on the capability to predict and take into account both the matrix effects (bulk glass composition) and the analytical conditions on band intensities. On the other hand, micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is commonly used to measure the hydrous absorbing species (e.g., hydroxyl OH and molecular H2O) in natural glasses, but requires critical assumptions for the study of crystal-hosted glasses. Here, we quantify for the first time the matrix effect of Raman external calibration procedures for the quantification of the total H2O content (H2OT = OH + H2Om) in natural silicate glasses. The procedures are based on the calibration of either the absolute (external calibration) or scaled (parameterisation) intensity of the 3550 cm−1 band. A total of 67 mafic (basanite, basalt) and intermediate (andesite) glasses hosted in olivines, having between 0.2 and 4.8 wt% of H2O, was analysed. Our new dataset demonstrates, for given water content, the height (intensity) of Raman H2OT band depends on glass density, reflectance and water environment. Hence this matrix effect must be considered in the quantification of H2O by Raman spectroscopy irrespective of the procedure, whereas the parameterisation mainly helps to predict and verify the self-consistency of the Raman results. In addition, to validate the capability of the micro-Raman to accurately determine the H2O content of multicomponent aluminosilicate glasses, a subset of 23 glasses was analysed by both micro-Raman and micro-FTIR spectroscopy using the band at 3550 cm−1. We provide new FTIR absorptivity coefficients (ε3550) for basalt (62.80 ± 0.8 L mol−1 cm−1) and basanite (43.96 ± 0.6 L mol−1 cm−1). These values, together with an exhaustive review of literature data, confirm the non-linear decline of the FTIR absorptivity coefficient (ε3550) as the glass depolymerisation increases. We demonstrate the good agreement between micro-FTIR and micro-Raman determination of H2O in silicate glasses when the matrix effects are properly considered.  相似文献

A multisite surface complexation (MUSIC) model for ferrihydrite (Fh) has been developed. The surface structure and composition of Fh nanoparticles are described in relation to ion binding and surface charge development. The site densities of the various reactive surface groups, the molar mass, the mass density, the specific surface area, and the particle size are quantified. As derived theoretically, molecular mass and mass density of nanoparticles will depend on the types of surface groups and the corresponding site densities and will vary with particle size and surface area because of a relatively large contribution of the surface groups in comparison to the mineral core of nanoparticles. The nano-sized (∼2.6 nm) particles of freshly prepared 2-line Fh as a whole have an increased molar mass of M ∼ 101 ± 2 g/mol Fe, a reduced mass density of ∼3.5 ± 0.1 g/cm3, both relatively to the mineral core. The specific surface area is ∼650 m2/g. Six-line Fh (5-6 nm) has a molar mass of M ∼ 94 ± 2 g/mol, a mass density of ∼3.9 ± 0.1 g/cm3, and a surface area of ∼280 ± 30 m2/g. Data analysis shows that the mineral core of Fh has an average chemical composition very close to FeOOH with M ∼ 89 g/mol. The mineral core has a mass density around ∼4.15 ± 0.1 g/cm3, which is between that of feroxyhyte, goethite, and lepidocrocite. These results can be used to constrain structural models for Fh. Singly-coordinated surface groups dominate the surface of ferrihydrite (∼6.0 ± 0.5 nm−2). These groups can be present in two structural configurations. In pairs, the groups either form the edge of a single Fe-octahedron (∼2.5 nm−2) or are present at a single corner (∼3.5 nm−2) of two adjacent Fe octahedra. These configurations can form bidentate surface complexes by edge- and double-corner sharing, respectively, and may therefore respond differently to the binding of ions such as uranyl, carbonate, arsenite, phosphate, and others. The relatively low PZC of ferrihydrite can be rationalized based on the estimated proton affinity constant for singly-coordinated surface groups. Nanoparticles have an enhanced surface charge. The charging behavior of Fh nanoparticles can be described satisfactory using the capacitance of a spherical Stern layer condenser in combination with a diffuse double layer for flat plates.  相似文献

To understand possible volcanogenic fluxes of CO2 to the Martian atmosphere, we investigated experimentally carbonate solubility in a synthetic melt based on the Adirondack-class Humphrey basalt at 1-2.5 GPa and 1400-1625 °C. Starting materials included both oxidized and reduced compositions, allowing a test of the effect of iron oxidation state on CO2 solubility. CO2 contents in experimental glasses were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Fe3+/FeT was measured by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The CO2 contents of glasses show no dependence on Fe3+/FeT and range from 0.34 to 2.12 wt.%. For Humphrey basalt, analysis of glasses with gravimetrically-determined CO2 contents allowed calibration of an integrated molar absorptivity of 81,500 ± 1500 L mol−1 cm−2 for the integrated area under the carbonate doublet at 1430 and 1520 cm−1. The experimentally determined CO2 solubilities allow calibration of the thermodynamic parameters governing dissolution of CO2 vapor as carbonate in silicate melt, KII, (Stolper and Holloway, 1988) as follows: , ΔV0 = 20.85 ± 0.91 cm3 mol−1, and ΔH0 = −17.96 ± 10.2 kJ mol−1. This relation, combined with the known thermodynamics of graphite oxidation, facilitates calculation of the CO2 dissolved in magmas derived from graphite-saturated Martian basalt source regions as a function of P, T, and fO2. For the source region for Humphrey, constrained by phase equilibria to be near 1350 °C and 1.2 GPa, the resulting CO2 contents are 51 ppm at the iron-wüstite buffer (IW), and 510 ppm at one order of magnitude above IW (IW + 1). However, solubilities are expected to be greater for depolymerized partial melts similar to primitive shergottite Yamato 980459 (Y 980459). This, combined with hotter source temperatures (1540 °C and 1.2 GPa) could allow hot plume-like magmas similar to Y 980459 to dissolve 240 ppm CO2 at IW and 0.24 wt.% of CO2 at IW + 1. For expected magmatic fluxes over the last 4.5 Ga of Martian history, magmas similar to Humphrey would only produce 0.03 and 0.26 bars from sources at IW and IW + 1, respectively. On the other hand, more primitive magmas like Y 980459 could plausibly produce 0.12 and 1.2 bars at IW and IW + 1, respectively. Thus, if typical Martian volcanic activity was reduced and the melting conditions cool, then degassing of CO2 to the atmosphere may not be sufficient to create greenhouse conditions required by observations of liquid surface water. However, if a significant fraction of Martian magmas derive from hot and primitive sources, as may have been true during the formation of Tharsis in the late Noachian, that are also slightly oxidized (IW + 1.2), then significant contribution of volcanogenic CO2 to an early Martian greenhouse is plausible.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide emissions and heat flow have been determined from the Ohaaki hydrothermal field, Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ), New Zealand following 20 a of production (116 MWe). Soil CO2 degassing was quantified with 2663 CO2 flux measurements using the accumulation chamber method, and 2563 soil temperatures were measured and converted to equivalent heat flow (W m−2) using published soil temperature heat flow functions. Both CO2 flux and heat flow were analysed statistically and then modelled using 500 sequential Gaussian simulations. Forty subsoil CO2 gas samples were also analysed for stable C isotopes. Following 20 a of production, current CO2 emissions equated to 111 ± 6.7 T/d. Observed heat flow was 70 ± 6.4 MW, compared with a pre-production value of 122 MW. This 52 MW reduction in surface heat flow is due to production-induced drying up of all alkali–Cl outflows (61.5 MW) and steam-heated pools (8.6 MW) within the Ohaaki West thermal area (OHW). The drying up of all alkali–Cl outflows at Ohaaki means that the soil zone is now the major natural pathway of heat release from the high-temperature reservoir. On the other hand, a net gain in thermal ground heat flow of 18 MW (from 25 MW to 43.3 ± 5 MW) at OHW is associated with permeability increases resulting from surface unit fracturing by production-induced ground subsidence. The Ohaaki East (OHE) thermal area showed no change in distribution of shallow and deep soil temperature contours despite 20 a of production, with an observed heat flow of 26.7 ± 3 MW and a CO2 emission rate of 39 ± 3 T/d. The negligible change in the thermal status of the OHE thermal area is attributed to the low permeability of the reservoir beneath this area, which has limited production (mass extraction) and sheltered the area from the pressure decline within the main reservoir. Chemistry suggests that although alkali–Cl outflows once contributed significantly to the natural surface heat flow (∼50%) they contributed little (<1%) to pre-production CO2 emissions due to the loss of >99% of the original CO2 content due to depressurisation and boiling as the fluids ascended to the surface. Consequently, the soil has persisted as the major (99%) pathway of CO2 release to the atmosphere from the high temperature reservoir at Ohaaki. The CO2 flux and heat flow surveys indicate that despite 20 a of production the variability in location, spatial extent and magnitude of CO2 flux remains consistent with established geochemical and geophysical models of the Ohaaki Field. At both OHW and OHE carbon isotopic analyses of soil gas indicate a two-stage fractionation process for moderate-flux (>60 g m−2 d−1) sites; boiling during fluid ascent within the underlying reservoir and isotopic enrichment as CO2 diffuses through porous media of the soil zone. For high-flux sites (>300 g m−2 d−1), the δ13CO2 signature (−7.4 ± 0.3‰ OHW and −6.5 ± 0.6‰ OHE) is unaffected by near-surface (soil zone) fractionation processes and reflects the composition of the boiled magmatic CO2 source for each respective upflow. Flux thresholds of <30 g m−2 d−1 for purely diffusive gas transport, between 30 and 300 g m−2 d−1 for combined diffusive–advective transport, and ?300 g m−2 d−1 for purely advective gas transport at Ohaaki were assigned. δ13CO2 values and cumulative probability plots of CO2 flux data both identified a threshold of ∼15 g m−2 d−1 by which background (atmospheric and soil respired) CO2 may be differentiated from hydrothermal CO2.  相似文献

The development of an accurate analytical procedure for determination of dissolved water in complex alumino-silicate glasses via micro-Raman analysis requires the assessment of the spectra topology dependence on glass composition. We report here a detailed study of the respective influence of bulk composition, iron oxidation state and total water content on the absolute and relative intensities of the main Raman bands related to glass network vibrations (LF: ∼490 cm−1; HF: ∼960 cm−1) and total water stretching (H2OT: ∼3550 cm−1) in natural glasses. The evolution of spectra topology was examined in (i) 33 anhydrous glasses produced by the re-melting of natural rock samples, which span a very large range of polymerisation degree (NBO/T from 0.00 to 1.16), (ii) 2 sets of synthetic anhydrous basaltic glasses with variable iron oxidation state (Fe3+/FeT from 0.05 to 0.87), and (iii) 6 sets of natural hydrous glasses (CH2OT from 0.4 to 7.0 wt%) with NBO/T varying from 0.01 to 0.76.In the explored domain of water concentration, external calibration procedure based on the H2OT band height is matrix-independent but its accuracy relies on precise control of the focusing depth and beam energy on the sample. Matrix-dependence strongly affects the internal calibrations based on H2OT height scaled to that of LF or HF bands but its effect decreases from acid (low NBO/T, SM) to basic (high NBO/T, SM) glasses. Structural parameters such as NBO/T (non-bridging oxygen per tetrahedron) and SM (sum of structural modifiers) describe the matrix-dependence better than simple compositional parameters (e.g. SiO2, Na2O + K2O). Iron oxidation state has only a minor influence on band topology in basalts and is thus not expected to significantly affect the Raman determinations of water in mafic (e.g. low SiO2, iron-rich) glasses. Modelling the evolution of the relative band height with polymerisation degree allows us to propose a general equation to predict the dissolved water content in natural glasses:

In situ Atomic Force Microscopy, AFM, experiments have been carried out using calcite cleavage surfaces in contact with solutions of MgSO4, MgCl2, Na2SO4 and NaCl in order to attempt to understand the role of Mg2+ during calcite dissolution. Although previous work has indicated that magnesium inhibits calcite dissolution, quantitative AFM analyses show that despite the fact that Mg2+ inhibits etch pit spreading, it increases the density and depth of etch pits nucleated on calcite surfaces and, subsequently, the overall dissolution rates: i.e., from 10−11.75 mol cm−2 s−1 (in deionized water) up to 10−10.54 mol cm−2 s−1 (in 2.8 M MgSO4). Such an effect is concentration-dependent and it is most evident in concentrated solutions ([Mg2+] >> 50 mM). These results show that common soluble salts (especially Mg sulfates) may play a critical role in the chemical weathering of carbonate rocks in nature as well as in the decay of carbonate stone in buildings and statuary.  相似文献

The oxygen-isotope compositions (obtained by laser fluorination) of hand-picked separates of isolated forsterite, isolated olivine and chondrules from the Tagish Lake carbonaceous chondrite describe a line (δ17O = 0.95 * δ18O − 3.24; R2 = 0.99) similar to the trend known for chondrules from other carbonaceous chondrites. The isolated forsterite grains (Fo99.6-99.8; δ18O = −7.2‰ to −5.5‰; δ17O = −9.6‰ to −8.2‰) are more 16O-rich than the isolated olivine grains (Fo39.6-86.8; δ18O = 3.1‰ to 5.1‰; δ17O = −0.3‰ to 2.2‰), and have chemical and isotopic characteristics typical of refractory forsterite. Chondrules contain olivine (Fo97.2-99.8) with oxygen-isotope compositions (δ18O = −5.2‰ to 5.9‰; δ17O = −8.1‰ to 1.2‰) that overlap those of isolated forsterite and isolated olivine. An inverse relationship exists between the Δ17O values and Fo contents of Tagish Lake isolated forsterite and chondrules; the chondrules likely underwent greater exchange with 16O-poor nebular gases than the forsterite. The oxygen-isotope compositions of the isolated olivine grains describe a trend with a steeper slope (1.1 ± 0.1, R2 = 0.94) than the carbonaceous chondrite anhydrous mineral line (CCAMslope = 0.95). The isolated olivine may have crystallized from an evolving melt that exchanged with 16O-poor gases of somewhat different composition than those which affected the chondrules and isolated forsterite. The primordial components of the Tagish Lake meteorite formed under conditions similar to other carbonaceous chondrite meteorite groups, especially CMs. Its alteration history has its closest affinities to CI carbonaceous chondrites.  相似文献

The presence of PAHs, n-alkanes, pristane, and phytanes in core sediment from the Vossoroca reservoir (Parana, southern Brazil) was investigated. The total concentration of the 16 PAHs varied from 15.5 to 1646 μg kg−1. Naphthalene was present in all layers (3.34–74.0 μg kg−1). The most abundant and dominant n-alkanes were n-C15 and n-C36, with average concentrations of 198.1 ± 46.8 and 522.9 ± 167.7 μg kg−1, respectively. Lighter n-alkanes were distributed more evenly through the layers and showed less variation, specially n-C9, n-C12, and n-C18, with average concentrations of 14.6 ± 3.0, 31.6 ± 1.9, and 95.0 ± 5.2 μg kg−1, respectively; heavier n-alkanes were more unevenly distributed.  相似文献

Strontium-90 is a beta emitting radionuclide produced during nuclear fission, and is a problem contaminant at many nuclear facilities. Transport of 90Sr in groundwaters is primarily controlled by sorption reactions with aquifer sediments. The extent of sorption is controlled by the geochemistry of the groundwater and sediment mineralogy. Here, batch sorption experiments were used to examine the sorption behaviour of 90Sr in sediment–water systems representative of the UK Sellafield nuclear site based on groundwater and contaminant fluid compositions. In experiments with low ionic strength groundwaters (<0.01 mol L−1), pH variation is the main control on sorption. The sorption edge for 90Sr was observed between pH 4 and 6 with maximum sorption occurring (Kd ∼ 103 L kg−1) at pH 6–8. At ionic strengths above 10 mmol L−1, and at pH values between 6 and 8, cation exchange processes reduced 90Sr uptake to the sediment. This exchange process explains the lower 90Sr sorption (Kd ∼ 40 L kg−1) in the presence of artificial Magnox tank liquor (IS = 29 mmol L−1). Strontium K-edge EXAFS spectra collected from sediments incubated with Sr2+ in either HCO3-buffered groundwater or artificial Magnox tank liquor, revealed a coordination environment of ∼9 O atoms at 2.58–2.61 Å after 10 days. This is equivalent to the Sr2+ hydration sphere for the aqueous ion and indicates that Sr occurs primarily in outer sphere sorption complexes. No change was observed in the Sr sorption environment with EXAFS analysis after 365 days incubation. Sequential extractions performed on sediments after 365 days also found that ∼80% of solid associated 90Sr was exchangeable with 1 M MgCl2 in all experiments. These results suggest that over long periods, 90Sr in contaminated sediments will remain primarily in weakly bound surface complexes. Therefore, if groundwater ionic strength increases (e.g. by saline intrusion related to sea level rise or by design during site remediation) then substantial remobilisation of 90Sr is to be expected.  相似文献

The behavior of ammonium, NH4+, in aqueous systems was studied based on Raman spectroscopic experiments to 600 °C and about 1.3 GPa. Spectra obtained at ambient conditions revealed a strong reduction of the dynamic three-dimensional network of water with addition of ammonium chloride, particularly at small solute concentrations. The differential scattering cross section of the ν1-NH4+ Raman band in these solutions was found to be similar to that of salammoniac. The Raman band of silica monomers at ∼780 cm−1 was present in all spectra of the fluid at high temperatures in hydrothermal diamond-anvil cell experiments with H2O ± NH4Cl and quartz or the assemblage quartz + kyanite + K-feldspar ± muscovite/tobelite. However, these spectra indicated that dissolved silica is less polymerized in ammonium chloride solutions than in comparable experiments with water. Quantification based on the normalized integrated intensity of the H4SiO40 band showed that the silica solubility in experiments with H2O + NH4Cl was significantly lower than that in equimolal NaCl solutions. This suggests that ammonium causes a stronger decrease in the activity of water in chloridic solutions than sodium. The Raman spectra of the fluid also showed that a significant fraction of ammonium was converted to ammonia, NH3, in all experiments at temperatures above 300 °C. This indicates a shift towards acidic conditions for experiments without a buffering mineral assemblage. The estimated pH of the fluid was ∼2 at 600 °C, 0.26 GPa, 6.6 m initial NH4Cl, based on the ratio of the integrated ν1-NH3 and ν1-NH4+ intensities and the HCl0 dissociation constant. The NH3/NH4+ ratio increased with temperature and decreased with pressure. This implies that more ammonium should be retained in K-bearing minerals coexisting with chloridic fluids upon high-P low-T metamorphism. At 500 °C, 0.73 GPa, ammonium partitions preferentially into the fluid, as constrained from infrared spectroscopy on the muscovite and from mass balance. The conversion of K-feldspar to muscovite proceeded much faster in experiments with NH4Cl solutions than in comparable experiments with water. This is interpreted as being caused by enhancement of the rate-limiting alumina solubility, suggesting complexation of Al with NH4. Nucleation and growth of mica at the expense of K-feldspar and NH4+/K+ exchange between fluid and K-feldspar occurred simultaneously, but incorporation of NH4+ into K-feldspar was distinctly faster than K-feldspar consumption.  相似文献

The thermal expansivities of 10 compositions from within the anorthite-wollastonite-gehlenite (An-Wo-Geh) compatibility triangle have been investigated using a combination of calorimetry and dilatometry on the glassy and liquid samples. The volumes at room temperature were derived from densities measured using the Archimedean buoyancy method. For each sample, density was measured at 298 K using glass that had a cooling-heating history of 10-10 K min−1. The thermal expansion coefficient of the glass from 298 K to the glass transition interval was measured by a dilatometer and the heat capacity was measured using a differential scanning calorimeter from 298 to 1135 K. The thermal expansion coefficient and the heat flow were determined at a heating rate of 10 K min−1 on glasses which were previously cooled at 10 K min−1. Supercooled liquid density, molar volume and molar thermal expansivities were indirectly determined by combining differential scanning calorimetric and dilatometric measurements assuming that the kinetics of enthalpy and shear relaxation are equivalent. The data obtained on supercooled liquids were compared to high-temperature predictions from the models of (Lange, R.A., Carmichael, I.S.E., 1987. Densities of Na2O-K2O-CaO-MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 liquids: New measurements and derived partial molar properties. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta51, 2931-2946; Courtial, P., Dingwell, D.B., 1995. Nonlinear composition dependence of molar volume of melts in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta59 (18), 3685-3695; Lange, R.A., 1997. A revised model for the density and thermal expansivity of K2O-Na2O-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 liquids from 700 to 1900 K: extension to crustal magmatic temperatures. Contrib. Mineral. Petrol.130, 1-11). The best linear fit combines the supercooled liquid data presented in this study and the high temperature data calculated using the Courtial and Dingwell (1995) model. This dilatometric/calorimetric method of determining supercooled liquid molar thermal expansivity greatly increases the temperature range accessible for thermal expansion. It represents a substantial increase in precision and understanding of the thermodynamics of calcium aluminosilicate melts. This enhanced precision demonstrates clearly the temperature independence of the melt expansions in the An-Wo-Geh system. This contrasts strongly with observations for neighboring system such as anorthite-diopside and raises the question of the compositional/structural origins of temperature dependence of thermal expansivity in multicomponent silicate melts.  相似文献
