In an investigation of the starspot hypothesis as it applies to the 'slowly variable' F-type dwarfs, we spectroscopically observed eight promising γ Doradus candidates to search for Ca  ii H&K emission. We found that there are no significant emission reversals in the cores of these resonance lines. Based on the ceiling flux calculations of the Ca  ii K line and on calculations of the Rossby number, we conclude that there is no support for the presence of strong magnetic activity and the starspot hypothesis in these objects.  相似文献

In the first part of this work, the empirical correlation of stellar surface brightness F V with ( I c− K ) broad-band colour is investigated by using a sample of stars cooler than the Sun. A bilinear correlation is found to represent well the brightness of G, K and M giant stars. The change in slope occurs at ( I c− K )∼2.1 or at about the transition from K to M spectral types. The same relationship is also investigated for dwarf stars and found to be distinctly different from that of the giants. The dwarf star correlation differs by an average of −0.4 in ( I c− K ) or by a maximum in F V of ∼−0.1, positioning it below that of the giants, with both trends tending towards convergence for the hotter stars in our sample. The flux distribution derived from the F V −( I c− K ) relationship for the giant stars, together with that derived from an F V −( V − K ) relationship and the blackbody flux distribution, is then utilized to compute synthetic light V and colour ( V − R )c, ( V − I )c and ( V − K ) curves of cool spotted stars. We investigate the effects on the amplitudes of the curves by using these F V –colour relations and by assuming the effective gravity of the spots to be lower than the gravity of the unspotted photosphere. We find that the amplitudes produced by using the F V −( I c− K ) relationship are larger than those produced by the other two brightness correlations, meaning smaller and/or warmer spots.  相似文献

We present temporal and spectral characteristics of X-ray flares observed from six late-type G–K active dwarfs (V368 Cep, XI Boo, IM Vir, V471 Tau, CC Eri and EP Eri) using data from observations with the XMM–Newton observatory. All the stars were found to be flaring frequently and altogether a total of 17 flares were detected above the 'quiescent' state X-ray emission which varied from 0.5 to  8.3 × 1029 erg s−1  . The largest flare was observed in a low-activity dwarf XI Boo with a decay time of 10 ks and ratio of peak flare luminosity to 'quiescent' state luminosity of 2. We have studied the spectral changes during the flares by using colour–colour diagram and by detailed spectral analysis during the temporal evolution of the flares. The exponential decay of the X-ray light curves, and time evolution of the plasma temperature and emission measure are similar to those observed in compact solar flares. We have derived the semiloop lengths of flares based on the hydrodynamic flare model. The size of the flaring loops is found to be less than the stellar radius. The hydrodynamic flare decay analysis indicates the presence of sustained heating during the decay of most flares.  相似文献

We investigate how the frequencies of gravity modes depend on the detailed properties of the chemical composition gradient that develops near the core of main‐sequence stars and, therefore, on the transport processes that are able to modify the μ profile in the central regions. We show that in main‐sequence models, similarly to the case of white dwarfs, the periods of high‐order gravity modes are accurately described by a uniform period spacing superposed to an oscillatory component. The periodicity and amplitude of such a component are related, respectively, to the location and sharpness of the μ gradient. We briefly discuss and interpret, by means of this simple approximation, the effect of turbulent mixing near the core on the periods of both high‐order and low‐order g modes, as well as of modes of mixed pressure‐gravity character. We present more than 1000‐day long photometry of EY Draconis in BV (RI)C passbands. The changes in the light curve are caused by the spottedness of the rotating surface. Modelling of the spotted surface shows that there are two large active regions present on the star on the opposite hemispheres. The evolution of the surface patterns suggests a flip‐flop phenomenon. Using Fourier analysis, we detect a rotation period of Prot = 0.45875 d, and an activity cycle with P ≈ 350 d, similar to the 11‐year long cycle of the Sun. This cycle with its year‐long period is the shortest one ever detected on active stars. Two bright flares are also detected and analysed (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We have earlier investigated the surface structures of a late‐type, single, giant FK Com for the years 1994–1998 using Doppler imaging. These surface temperature maps revealed long‐lived active regions at high latitudes. Long‐term photometric observations also show that these active regions tend to occur at two permanent active longitudes which are 180 degrees apart from each other, and that the activity switches the longitude with an average period of about 3 years (the “flip‐flop” phenomenon). In this work we present new Doppler maps of FK Com obtained 1998‐2003 and light‐curve maps obtained 2002–2003. These new maps are investigated together with the earlier temperature maps and light‐curve maps, with an aim of further studying the active longitudes, “flip‐flop” phenomenon and surface differential rotation on FK Com. We present two images of intermediate and low axial inclination G dwarfs (AP 149 and AP 193) in the young open cluster α Persei, and compare these with previous images of intermediate and high axial inclination objects in this cluster. All stars show starspots at high latitudes, with one star exhibiting a strong polar spot. Although low-latitude features are found on all stars to some degree, the detection of spots on AP 193 is marginal. The apparent difference in starspot morphology from one object to the next is probably the result of a stellar magnetic cycle, although the exact effect on the starspot distribution throughout a cycle is unknown.
Polar spots are found in many Doppler images of rapidly rotating cool stars. In the past, their existence has been called into question, and it has been suggested that they could be the manifestations of NLTE (e.g. chromospheric filling in of line profiles) effects rather than real photospheric features. We assume the polar spots to be real photospheric features, and conclude that the flat-bottomed nature of the profile shape can be attributed to photospheric polar spots. The degree of truncation of the profile depends not only on spot size and strength, but also on the effective foreshortening of the polar region, a function of axial inclination.
H α is in emission on AP 149 which shows a double peak at most phases. The time-series of the profile shows an s-wave pattern as the position of these peaks changes throughout the rotation cycle. We attribute this to coronal clouds located above the stellar surface in synchronous orbit. A maximum-entropy tomogram is derived revealing four distinct emission regions located near and above the corotation radius.  相似文献

Understanding transport processes inside stars is one of the main goals of asteroseismology. Chemical turbulent mixing can affect the internal distribution of μ near the energy generating core, having an effect on the evolutionary tracks similar to that of overshooting. This mixing leads to a smoother chemical composition profile near the edge of the convective core, which is reflected in the behavior of the buoyancy frequency and, therefore, in the frequencies of gravity modes. We describe the effects of convective overshooting and turbulent mixing on the frequencies of gravity modes in B‐type main sequence stars. In particular, the cases of p‐g mixed modes in β Cep stars and high‐order modes in SPBs are considered. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We present results of an ≈20-ks X-ray observation of the Wolf–Rayet (WR) binary system WR 147 obtained with XMM–Newton . Previous studies have shown that this system consists of a nitrogen-type WN8 star plus an OB companion whose winds are interacting to produce a colliding wind shock. X-ray spectra from the pn and MOS detectors confirm the high extinction reported from infrared studies and reveal hot plasma including the first detection of the Fe Kα line complex at 6.67 keV. Spectral fits with a constant-temperature plane-parallel shock model give a shock temperature   kT shock= 2.7  keV (   T shock≈ 31  MK), close to but slightly hotter than the maximum temperature predicted for a colliding wind shock. Optically thin plasma models suggest even higher temperatures, which are not yet ruled out. The X-ray spectra are harder than can be accounted for using 2D numerical colliding wind shock models based on nominal mass-loss parameters. Possible explanations include: (i) underestimates of the terminal wind speeds or wind abundances, (ii) overly simplistic colliding wind models or (iii) the presence of other X-ray emission mechanisms besides colliding wind shocks. Further improvement of the numerical models to include potentially important physics such as non-equilibrium ionization will be needed to rigorously test the colliding wind interpretation.  相似文献

To try to understand the behavior of helium variability in Chemically Peculiar stars, we continued our on‐going observational campaign started by Catanzaro, Leone & Catalano (1999). In this paper we present a new set of time resolved spectroscopic observations of the HeI5876 Å line for a sample of 10 stars in the spectral range B3 ‐ A2 and characterized by different overabundances. This line does not show variability in two stars: HD77350 and HD175156. It shows instead an equivalent width variation in phase with the Hipparcos light curve for two stars: HD79158 and HD196502. Antiphase variations have been found in 4 stars of our sample, namely: HD35502, HD124224, HD129174 and HD142990. Nothing we can say about HD115735 because of the constancy of Hipparcos photometric data, while no phase relation has been observed for HD90044. In the text we discuss the case of HD175156, according to photometric calibration and our spectroscopic observations we rule out the membership of this star to the main sequence chemically peculiar stars. We confirm the results obtained in the previous paper for which phase relations between light, spectral and magnetic variations are not dependent on stellar spectral type or peculiarity subclass.  相似文献

From high-resolution spectra a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis of the Mg  ii 4481.2-Å  feature is implemented for 52 early and medium local B stars on the main sequence (MS). The influence of the neighbouring line Al  iii 4479.9-Å  is considered. The magnesium abundance is determined; it is found that  log ɛ(Mg) = 7.67 ± 0.21  on average. It is shown that uncertainties in the microturbulent parameter Vt are the main source of errors in  log ɛ(Mg)  . When using 36 stars with the most reliable Vt values derived from O  ii and N  ii lines, we obtain the mean abundance  log ɛ(Mg) = 7.59 ± 0.15  . The latter value is precisely confirmed for several hot B stars from an analysis of the Mg  ii 7877-Å  weak line. The derived abundance  log ɛ(Mg) = 7.59 ± 0.15  is in excellent agreement with the solar magnesium abundance  log ɛ (Mg) = 7.55 ± 0.02  , as well as with the proto-Sun abundance  log ɛ ps (Mg) = 7.62 ± 0.02  . Thus, it is confirmed that the Sun and the B-type MS stars in our neighbourhood have the same metallicity.  相似文献

We present high-resolution spectroscopic observations of 21 B-type stars, selected from the Edinburgh–Cape Blue Object Survey. Model atmosphere analyses confirm that 14 of these stars are young, main-sequence B-type objects with Population I chemical compositions. The remaining seven are found to be evolved objects, including subdwarfs, horizontal branch and post-AGB objects. A kinematical analysis shows that all 14 young main-sequence stars could have formed in the disc and subsequently been ejected into the halo. These results are combined with the analysis of a previous subsample of stars taken from the Survey. Of the complete sample, 31 have been found to be young, main-sequence objects, with formation in the disc, and subsequent ejection into the halo, again being found to be a plausible scenario.  相似文献
