In this paper, we study the variations of group galaxy properties according to the assembly history in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS-DR6) selected groups. Using mock SDSS group catalogues, we find two suitable indicators of group formation time: (i) the isolation of the group, defined as the distance to the nearest neighbour in terms of its virial radius and (ii) the concentration, measured as the group inner density calculated using the fifth nearest bright galaxy to the group centre. Groups within narrow ranges of mass in the mock catalogue show increasing group age with isolation and concentration. However, in the observational data the stellar age, as indicated by the spectral type, only shows a correlation with concentration.
We study groups of similar mass and different assembly history, finding important differences in their galaxy population. Particularly, in high-mass SDSS groups, the number of members, mass-to-light ratios, red galaxy fractions and the magnitude difference between the brightest and second-brightest group galaxies, show different trends as a function of isolation and concentration, even when it is expected that the latter two quantities correlate with group age. Conversely, low-mass SDSS groups appear to be less sensitive to their assembly history.
The correlations detected in the SDSS are not consistent with the trends measured in the mock catalogues. However, discrepancies can be explained in terms of the disagreement found in the age-isolation trends, suggesting that the model might be overestimating the effects of environment. We discuss how the modelling of the cold gas in satellite galaxies could be responsible for this problem. These results can be used to improve our understanding of the evolution of galaxies in high-density environments.  相似文献

We study triple systems of galaxies with mean projected harmonic separation ≃0.6  h −1 Mpc     We call the systems 'wide triplets', in contrast to compact triplets with mean projected harmonic separation ≃0.04  h −1 Mpc, studied by Karachentsev et al. Data are taken for 108 wide triplets from a list compiled by Trofimov & Chernin; at least one-third of them are considered to be probably isolated physical systems. With typical crossing times of about the Hubble time, the wide triplets seem to be in a state of ongoing collapse. This is confirmed by a set of computer models which simulate well the observational characteristics of the ensemble of wide triplets. The simulations also give a statistical estimate of the total mass of a typical wide triplet: it proves to be ≃1013 M. This figure indicates that the dark matter mass is 15–30 times the mass of baryonic matter in the systems. The dynamics of wide triplets, as well as their dark matter content, provide new direct cosmological constraints by establishing that hierarchical evolution is occurring on a mass scale of ∼1013 M and a spatial scale of ∼1 Mpc.  相似文献

We present XMM–Newton observations of three optically selected   z > 0.6  clusters from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS), comprising the first results of a planned X-ray survey of the full EDisCS high-redshift sample. The EDisCS clusters were identified in the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey as surface brightness fluctuations in the optical sky and their masses and galaxy populations are well described by extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations. We detect two of the three clusters in the X-ray and place a firm upper limit on diffuse emission in the third cluster field. We are able to constrain the X-ray luminosity and temperature of the detected clusters and estimate their masses. We find that the X-ray properties of the detected EDisCS clusters are similar to those of X-ray-selected clusters of comparable mass and – unlike other high-redshift, optically selected clusters – are consistent with the T –σ and   L X–σ  relations determined from X-ray-selected clusters at low redshift. The X-ray determined mass estimates are generally consistent with those derived from weak-lensing and spectroscopic analyses. These preliminary results suggest that the novel method of optical selection used to construct the EDisCS catalogue may, like selection by X-ray luminosity, be well suited for identification of relaxed, high-redshift clusters whose intracluster medium is in place and stable by   z ∼ 0.8  .  相似文献

The intrinsic, three-dimensional shapes of small galaxy groups, containing between three and eight members, are evaluated using three different statistics: (i) the mean sum of square sines of angles in all possible triangles formed by members of the group; (ii) the variance of square paired separations in the group; (iii) the axial ratio of a rectangle containing the group. The mean values of these parameters and their rms deviations are calculated for observed galaxy groups and simulated groups with members that are distributed randomly within prolate or oblate spheroids. Comparison of observational data and simulations shows that the observed galaxy groups have shapes consistent with the projected shapes of prolate or oblate spheroids with axial ratios of 3:1, regardless of their multiplicity, but inconsistent with the projected shapes of spherical objects.  相似文献

The redshift evolution of the galaxy cluster temperature function is a powerful probe of cosmology. However, its determination requires the measurement of redshifts for all clusters in a catalogue, which is likely to prove challenging for large catalogues expected from XMM-Newton , which may contain of the order of 2000 clusters with measurable temperatures, distributed around the sky. In this paper we study the apparent cluster temperature, which can be obtained without cluster redshifts. We show that the apparent temperature function itself is of limited use in constraining cosmology, and so concentrate our focus on studying how apparent temperatures can be combined with other X-ray information to constrain the cluster redshift. We also briefly study the circumstances under which the non-thermal spectral features can provide redshift information.  相似文献

The work compiles a correlated study of a gravitational quasi equilibrium thermodynamic approach for establishing and signifying a unique behavior of the cosmological entropy and phase transitions in an expanding Universe. On the basis of prescribed boundary conditions for the cluster temperature a relation for the intra‐cluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters has been derived. A more productive and signifying approach of the correlation functions used for galaxy clustering phenomena shows a unique behavior of the entropy change where a phenomenon known as the gravitational phase transition occurs. This unique behavior occurs with a symmetry breaking from mild clustering to low clustering and from mild clustering to high clustering which differs from a normal symmetry breaking in material sciences. We also derive results for the specific latent heat associated with the phase transitions of 3.20 Tc and 0.55 Tc for the mildly clustered phase to the low clustered phase and from the mildly clustered phase to the highly clustered phase, respectively.
