This is the second of a series of papers aimed to look for an explanation on the generation of high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in accretion disks around neutron star, black hole, and white dwarf binaries. The model is inspired by the general idea of a resonance mechanism in the accretion disk oscillations as was already pointed out by Abramowicz and Klu’zniak (2001). In a first paper (P'etri, 2005a, paper I), we showed that a rotating misaligned magnetic field of a neutron star gives rise to some resonances close to the inner edge of the accretion disk. In this second paper, we suggest that this process does also exist for an asymmetry in the gravitational potential of the compact object. We prove that the same physics applies, at least in the linear stage of the response to the disturbance in the system. This kind of asymmetry is well suited for neutron stars or white dwarfs possessing an inhomogeneous interior allowing for a deviation from a perfectly spherically symmetric gravitational field. After a discussion on the magnitude of this deformation applied to neutron stars, we show by a linear analysis that the disk initially in a cylindrically symmetric stationary state is subject to {three kinds of resonances: a corotation resonance, a Lindblad resonance due to a driven force and a parametric resonance}. In a second part, we focus on the linear response of a thin accretion disk in the 2D limit. {Waves are launched at the aforementioned resonance positions and propagate in some permitted regions inside the disk, according to the dispersion relation obtained by a WKB analysis}. In a last part, these results are confirmed and extended via non linear hydrodynamical numerical simulations performed with a pseudo-spectral code solving Euler's equations in a 2D cylindrical coordinate frame. {We found that for a weak potential perturbation, the Lindblad resonance is the only effective mechanism producing a significant density fluctuation}. In a last step, we replaced the Newtonian potential by the so called logarithmically modified pseudo-Newtonian potential in order to take into account some general-relativistic effects like the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). The latter potential is better suited to describe the close vicinity of a neutron star or a black hole. However, from a qualitative point of view, the resonance conditions remain the same. The highest kHz QPOs are then interpreted as the orbital frequency of the disk at locations where the response to the resonances are maximal. It is also found that strong gravity is not required to excite the resonances.  相似文献

The recent detection by Limousin et al. of five new strong lensing events dominated by galaxy cluster members in Abell 1689, and outside the critical regime of the cluster itself, offers a way to obtain constraints on the cluster mass distribution in a region inaccessible to standard lensing analysis. In addition, modelling such systems will provide another window on the dark matter haloes of galaxies in very dense environments. Here, it is shown that the boost in image separation due to the external shear and convergence from a smooth cluster component means that more numerous, less massive galaxies have the potential to create multiple images with detectable separations, relative to isolated field galaxies. This comes in addition to a potential increase in their lensing (source plane) cross-section. To gain insight into the factors involved and as a precursor to a numerical study using N -body simulations, a simple analytic model of a cluster at   z = 0.3  lensing background galaxies at   z = 2  is considered here. The fiducial model has cluster members with isothermal density profiles and luminosities L , distributed in a Schechter function (faint-end slope  ν=−1.25  ), related to their velocity dispersions σ via the Faber–Jackson scaling L ∝σ4. Just outside the critical regime of the cluster, the scale of galaxy-dominated image separations is significantly increased. Folding in the fact that less massive galaxies present a lower lensing cross-section, and that the cross-section can itself be enhanced in an external field leads to a factor of a few times more detected events relative to field galaxies. These values will be higher closer to the critical curve. Given that the events in Abell 1689 were detected over a very small region of the cluster where ACS data were available, this motivates the search for such events in other clusters.  相似文献

This paper aims to aid understanding of the complicated interplay between construction and destruction of volcanoes, with an emphasis on the role of substrate tectonic heritage in controlling magma conduit geometry, lateral collapse, landslides, and preferential erosion pathways. The influence of basement structure on the development of six composite volcanoes located in different geodynamic/geological environments is described: Stromboli (Italy), in an island arc extensional tectonic setting, Ollagüe (Bolivia–Chile) in a cordilleran extensional setting, Kizimen (Russia) in a transtensional setting, Pinatubo (Philippines) in a transcurrent setting, Planchon (Chile) in a compressional cordilleran setting, and Mt. Etna (Italy) in a complex tectonic boundary setting. Analogue and numerical modelling results are used to enhance understanding of processes exemplified by these volcanic centres. We provide a comprehensive overview of this topic by considering a great deal of relevant, recently published studies and combine these with the presentation of new results, in order to contribute to the discussion on substrate tectonics and its control on volcano evolution. The results show that magma conduits in volcanic rift zones can be geometrically controlled by the regional tectonic stress field. Rift zones produce a lateral magma push that controls the direction of lateral collapse and can also trigger collapse. Once lateral collapse occurs, the resulting debuttressing produces a reorganization of the shallow-level magma migration pathways towards the collapse depression. Subsequent landslides and erosion tend to localize along rift zones. If a zone of weakness underlies a volcano, long-term creep can occur, deforming a large sector of the cone. This deformation can trigger landslides that propagate along the destabilized flank axis. In the absence of a rift zone, normal and transcurrent faults propagating from the substrate through the volcano can induce flank instability in directions respectively perpendicular and oblique to fault strike. This destabilization can evolve to lateral collapse with triggering mechanisms such as seismic activity or magmatic intrusion.  相似文献

Mars
Mars is the fourth planet out from the sun. It is a terrestrial planet with a density suggesting a composition roughly similar to that of the Earth. Its orbital period is 687 days, its orbital eccentricity is 0.093 and its rotational period is about 24 hours. Mars has two small moons of asteroidal shapes and sizes (about 11 and 6 km mean radius), the bigger of which, Phobos, orbits with decreasing semimajor orbit axis. The decrease of the orbit is caused by the dissipation of tidal energy in the Martian mantle. The other satellite, Deimos, orbits close to the synchronous position where the rotation period of a planet equals the orbital period of its satellite and has hardly evolved with time. Mars has a tenous atmosphere composed mostly of CO with strong winds and with large scale aeolian transport of surface material during dust storms and in sublimation-condensation cycles between the polar caps. The planet has a small magnetic field, probably not generated by dynamo action in the core but possibly due to remnant magnetization of crustal rock acquired earlier from a stronger magnetic field generated by a now dead core dynamo. A dynamo powered by thermal power alone would have ceased a few billions of years ago as the core cooled to an extent that it became stably stratified. Mars' topography and its gravity field are dominated by the Tharsis bulge, a huge dome of volcanic origin. Tharsis was the major center of volcanic activity, a second center is Elysium about 100° in longitude away. The Tharsis bulge is a major contributor to the non-hydrostaticity of the planet's figure. The moment of inertia factor together with the mass and the radius presently is the most useful constraint for geophysical models of the Martian interior. It has recently been determined by Doppler range measurements to the Mars Pathfinder Lander to be (Folkner et al. 1997). In addition, models of the interior structure use the chemistry of the SNC meteorites which are widely believed to have originated on Mars. According to the models, Mars is a differentiated planet with a 100 to 200 km thick basaltic crust, a metallic core with a radius of approximately half the planetary radius, and a silicate mantle. Mantle dynamics is essential in forming the elements of the surface tectonics. Models of mantle convection find that the pressure-induced phase transformations of -olivine to -spinel, -spinel to -spinel, and -spinel to perovskite play major roles in the evolution of mantle flow fields and mantle temperature. It is not very likely that the -spinel to perovskite transition is present in Mars today, but a few 100 km thick layer of perovskite may have been present in the lower mantle immediately above the core-mantle boundary early in the Martian history when mantle temperatures were hotter than today. The phase transitions act to reduce the number of upwellings to a few major plumes which is consistent with the bipolar distribution of volcanic centers of Mars. The phase transitions also cause a partial layering of the lower mantle which keeps the lower mantle and the core from extensive cooling over the past aeons. A relatively hot, fluid core is the most widely accepted explanation for the present lack of a self-generated magnetic field. Growth of an inner core which requires sub-liquidus temperatures in the core would have provided an efficient mechanism to power a dynamo up to the present day. Received 10 May 1997  相似文献

We present a simplified analytic approach to the problem of the spiralling of a massive body orbiting within the dark halo of a dwarf galaxy. This dark halo is treated as the core region of a King distribution of dark matter particles, in consistency with the observational result of dwarf galaxies having solid-body rotation curves. Thus we derive a simple formula which provides a reliable and general first-order solution to the problem, totally analogous to the one corresponding to the dynamical friction problem in an isothermal halo. This analytic approach allows a clear handling and a transparent understanding of the physics and the scaling of the problem. A comparison with the isothermal case shows that in the core regions of a King sphere, dynamical friction proceeds at a different rate, and is sensitive to the total core radius. Thus, in principle, observable consequences may result. In order to illustrate the possible effects, we apply this formula to the spiralling of globular cluster orbits in dwarf galaxies, and show how present-day globular cluster systems could, in principle, be used to derive better limits on the structure of dark haloes around dwarf galaxies, when the observational situation improves. As a second application, we study the way a massive black hole population forming a fraction of these dark haloes would gradually concentrate towards the centre, with a consequent deformation of an originally solid-body rotation curve. This effect allows us to set limits on the fraction/mass of any massive black hole minority component of the dark haloes of dwarf galaxies. In essence, we take advantage of the way the global matter distribution fixes the local distribution function for the dark matter particles, which in turn determines the dynamical friction problem.  相似文献

For more than 40 years CNES has flown scientific balloon flights to perform measurements in a near space environment. The CNES balloon team provides the scientific teams with expertise in the construction of the gondola, the link between the instrument and the balloon. This gondola provides to the scientific instrument power supply, thermal and landing protection, attitude measurement and also pointing capability where needed. The project CLAIRE provides a good illustration of the CNES expertise in this domain. The goal of this project was to demonstrate that it is possible to focus a gamma-ray beam intercepted by a large area onto a small focal point. The concept has been demonstrated on ground in the 90s, but a validation under space conditions was necessary to measure the performance of such a telescope for a source at infinity.  相似文献

We quantitatively scrutinize the effects of the radiation drag arising from the radiation fields in a galactic bulge in order to examine the possibility that the radiation drag could be an effective mechanism to extract angular momentum in a spheroidal system like a bulge and allow plenty of gas to accrete on to the galactic centre. For this purpose, we numerically solve the relativistic radiation hydrodynamical equation coupled with accurate radiative transfer, and quantitatively assess the radiation drag efficiency. As a result, we find that in an optically thick regime the radiation drag efficiency is sensitively dependent on the density distributions of the interstellar medium (ISM). The efficiency drops according to     in an optically thick uniform ISM, where τ T is the total optical depth of the dusty ISM , whereas the efficiency remains almost constant at a high level if the ISM is clumpy . Hence, if bulge formation begins with a star formation event in a clumpy ISM, the radiation drag will effectively work to remove the angular momentum and the accreted gas may form a supermassive black hole. As a natural consequence, this mechanism reproduces a putative linear relation between the mass of a supermassive black hole and the mass of a galactic bulge, although further detailed modelling for stellar evolution is required for a more precise prediction.  相似文献

The purpose of this work is to show that chaos control techniques (OGY, in special) can be used to efficiently keep a spacecraft around another body performing elaborate orbits. We consider a satellite and a spacecraft moving initially in coplanar and circular orbits, with slightly different radii, around a heavy central planet. The spacecraft, which is the inner body, has a slightly larger angular velocity than the satellite so that, after some time, they eventually go to a situation in which the distance between them becomes sufficiently small, so that they start to interact with one another. This situation is called as an encounter. In previous work we have shown that this scenario is a typical situation of a chaotic scattering for some well-defined range of parameters. Considering this scenario, we first show how it is possible to find the unstable periodic orbits that are located in the chaotic invariant set. From the set of unstable periodic orbits, we select the ones that can be combined to provide the desired elaborate orbit. Then, chaos control technique based on the OGY method is used to keep the spacecraft in the desired orbit. Finally, we analyze the results and make considerations regarding a realistic scenario of space exploration.  相似文献

The solution of a feedback optimal control problem arising in orbital mechanics is addressed in this paper. The dynamics is that of a massless body moving in a central gravitational force field subject also to a drag and a radial modulated force. The drag is linearly proportional to the velocity and inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the center of attraction. The problem is tackled by exploiting the properties of a suitably devised linearizing map that transforms the nonlinear dynamics into an inhomogeneous linear system of differential equations supplemented by a quadratic objective function. The generating function method is then applied to this new system, and the solution is back transformed in the old variables. The proposed technique, in contrast to the classical optimal control problem, allows us to derive analytic closed-loop solutions without solving any two-point boundary value problem. Applications are discussed.  相似文献

We compare the conclusions reached using the coarse-graining technique employed by Henriksen for a one degree of freedom (per particle) collisionless system to those presented in a paper by Binney based on an exact one degree of freedom model. We find agreement in detail, but in addition we show that the isolated 1D system is self-similar and therefore unrelaxed. Fine graining of this system recovers much less prominent wave-like structure than in a spherically symmetric isotropic 3D system. The rate of central flattening is also reduced in the 1D system. We take this to be evidence that relaxation of collisionless systems proceeds ultimately by way of short wavelength Landau damping. N -body systems, both real and simulated, can be trapped in an incompletely relaxed state because of a break in the cascade of energy to small scales. This may be due to the rapid dissipation of the small-scale oscillations in an isolated system to the existence of conserved quantities such as angular momentum, or to the failure in simulations to resolve sub-Jeans length scales. Such a partially relaxed state appears to be the Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) state and is to be expected especially in young systems. The NFW core is shown to be isolated. In non-isolated systems, continuing coarse-grained relaxation should be towards a density core in solid body rotation.  相似文献

Recent data on the empirical metallicity distribution of G dwarfs in the disk solar neighbourhood are fitted in two different ways. We use an extended Poisson distribution in the limit where the probability of star formation is small, and a Gauss distribution in the limit where a large number of physical variables is required to determine stellar metal abundance. Both are found to reproduce the data at the same (acceptable) extent, with a slight preference for the former. The emprirical, differential metallicity distribution of G dwarfs in the disk solar neighbourhood is compared with its theoretical counterpart, in the picture of a closed, comoving model of chemical evolution. The limits of the currently used infall models are discussed and a scenario of galactic formation and evolution is presented. The Galactic history is thought as made of two main phases: contraction (which produces the extended component) and equilibrium (which gives the disk). In this view, the stars observed within the solar cylinder did not necessarily arise from the primordial gas which later collapsed into the disk solar neighbourhood. It is found that the G-dwarf problem is strongly alleviated, with the possible exception of the low-metallicity and high-metallicity tail of the distribution. The best choice of parameters implies: (i) a metal yield in the contraction phase which is larger by a factor of about 5 with respect to the equilibrium phase; (ii) a model halo mass fraction of about 0.3; (iii) a model disk mass fraction of about 0.6. It provides additional support to the idea of a generalized Schmidt star formation law, which is different in different phases of evolution. The model, cumulative, G-dwarf metallicity distribution in the disk solar neighbourhood is found to predict too may low-metallicity stars with respect to its empirical counterpart, related to a Poissonian or Gaussian fit. The main resons for the occurrence of a G-dwarf problem are discussed. Finally, a stochastic process of star formation, related to a Poisson distribution, is briefly outlined.  相似文献

The PLANCK mission, originally devised for cosmological studies, offers the opportunity to observe Solar System objects at millimetric and submillimetric wavelengths. In this paper we concentrate on the asteroids of the Main Belt, a large class of minor bodies in the Solar System. At present, more that 40 000 of these asteroids have been discovered and their detection rate is rapidly increasing. We intend to estimate the number of asteroids that can be detected during the mission and to evaluate the strength of their signal. We have rescaled the instrument sensitivities, calculated by the LFI and HFI teams for sources fixed in the sky, introducing some degradation factors to properly account for moving objects. In this way a detection threshold is derived for asteroidal detection that is related to the diameter of the asteroid and its geocentric distance. We have developed a numerical code that models the detection of asteroids in the LFI and HFI channels during the mission. This code performs a detailed integration of the orbits of the asteroids in the timespan of the mission and identifies those bodies that fall in the beams of PLANCK and their signal strength. According to our simulations, a total of 397 objects will be observed by PLANCK and an asteroidal body will be detected in some beam in 30% of the total sky scan-circles. A significant fraction (in the range from 50 to 100 objects) of the 397 asteroids will be observed with a high S/N ratio. Flux measurements of a large sample of asteroids in the submillimeter and millimeter range are relevant since they allow to analyze the thermal emission and its relation to the surface and regolith properties. Furthermore, it will be possible to check on a wider base, the two standard thermal models, based on a nonrotating or rapidly rotating sphere. Our method can also be used to separate Solar System sources from cosmological sources in the survey. This work is based on PLANCK LFI activities.  相似文献

We present a new technique to extract the cosmological information from high-redshift supernova data in the presence of calibration errors and extinction due to dust. While in the traditional technique the distance modulus of each supernova is determined separately, in our approach we determine all distance moduli at once, in a process that achieves a significant degree of self-calibration. The result is a much reduced sensitivity of the cosmological parameters to the calibration uncertainties. As an example, for a strawman mission similar to that outlined in the SNAP satellite proposal, the increased precision obtained with the new approach is roughly equivalent to a factor of five decrease in the calibration uncertainty.  相似文献

We report the results of a spectropolarimetric survey of a complete far-infrared-selected sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies. We have found polarized broad H α emission in one new source, NGC 5995. In the sample as a whole, there is a clear tendency for galaxies in which we have detected broad H α in polarized light to have warm mid–far-infrared colours     in agreement with our previous results. However, a comparison of the optical, radio and hard X-ray properties of these systems leads us to conclude that this is a secondary consequence of the true mechanism governing our ability to see scattered light from the broad-line region. We find a strong trend for galaxies showing such emission to lie above a critical value of the relative luminosity of the active core to the host galaxy (as measured from the [O  iii ] 5007-Å equivalent width) which varies as a function of the obscuring column density as measured from hard X-ray observations. The warmth of the infrared colours is then largely due to a combination of the luminosity of the active core, the obscuring column and the relative importance of the host galaxy in powering the far-infrared emission, and not solely orientation as we inferred in our previous paper. Our data may also provide an explanation as to why the most highly polarized galaxies, which appear to have tori that are largely edge-on, are also the most luminous and have the most easily detectable scattered broad H α .  相似文献

Following the work of Bernsteinet al. (1958), Frieman and Rotenberg (1960) and Unno (1968) a formalism is developed which allows to examine the adiabatic stability of a perfectly conducting, rotating and self-gravitating plasma in non-steady equilibrium. Using this method the stability of a plasma in a dynamical phase of its evolution can be predicted. Global stability investigations are carried out which are based on a variation of the total energy of the system and, in general, lead to sufficient conditions for stability. The formalism is applied to the stability of a horizontal magnetic field in a medium stratified by a gravitational field.  相似文献

The theory of waves and instabilities in a differentially rotating disc containing a poloidal magnetic field is developed within the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. A continuous spectrum, for which the eigenfunctions are localized on individual magnetic surfaces, is identified but is found not to contain any instabilities associated with differential rotation. The normal modes of a weakly magnetized thin disc are studied by extending the asymptotic methods used previously to describe the equilibria. Waves propagate radially in the disc according to a dispersion relation which is determined by solving an eigenvalue problem at each radius. The dispersion relation for a hydrodynamic disc is re-examined and the modes are classified according to their behaviour in the limit of large wavenumber. The addition of a magnetic field introduces new, potentially unstable, modes and also breaks up the dispersion diagram by causing avoided crossings. The stability boundary to the magnetorotational instability in the parameter space of polytropic equilibria is located by solving directly for marginally stable equilibria. For a given vertical magnetic field in the disc, bending of the field lines has a stabilizing effect and it is shown that stable equilibria exist which are capable of launching a predominantly centrifugally driven wind.  相似文献

Tidal friction in triple stars   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Tidal friction in close binaries, with periods of a few days, is expected to circularize the orbit on a time-scale long compared with human observation but shorter than, or comparable to, the lifetimes of main-sequence stars. In a hierarchical triple star, however, the perturbing effect of the distant third star may decircularize the inner orbit significantly on a time-scale of the order of days (as in λ Tau) or centuries (as in β Per). If the inner pair is observed to be semidetached, however, it is plausible to assume that the eccentricity is small. This may be because tidal friction is operating on a comparably short time-scale, and so it is in principle amenable to observation. We attempt to determine a lower limit to the strength of tidal friction in λ Tau and β Per, on the basis of this consideration. Tidal friction will also lead to a secular transfer of angular momentum from the inner orbit to the outer orbit. Too rapid a transfer may lead to orbital shrinkage that is fast compared with the nuclear time-scales of the inner systems, and this can also be ruled out on observational grounds. Thus we may be able to set an upper as well as a lower limit to the strength of tidal friction, on the basis of observations. In a young hierarchical triple, provided that the orbits are fairly nearly orthogonal, tidal friction can serve to reduce the inner orbital period from months to days within a fairly short period of time, of order P 2out/ P in. This may be a significant mechanism for producing young short-period binaries.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a consistent, phenomenological methodology to measure preferred-frame effects (PFEs) in binary pulsars that exhibit a high rate of periastron advance. We show that in these systems the existence of a preferred frame for gravity leads to an observable characteristic 'signature' in the timing data, which uniquely identifies this effect. We expand the standard Damour–Deruelle timing formula to incorporate this 'signature' and show how this new PFE timing model can be used to either measure or constrain the parameters related to a violation of the local Lorentz invariance of gravity in the strong internal fields of neutron stars. In particular, we demonstrate that in the presence of PFEs we expect a set of the new timing parameters to have a unique relationship that can be measured and tested incontrovertibly. This new methodology is applied to the Double Pulsar, which turns out to be the ideal test system for this kind of experiment. The currently available data set allows us only to study the impact of PFEs on the orbital precession rate,     , providing limits that are, at the moment, clearly less stringent than existing limits on PFE strong-field parameters. However, simulations show that the constraints improve fast in the coming years, allowing us to study all new PFE timing parameters and to check for the unique relationship between them. Finally, we show how a combination of several suitable systems in a PFE antenna array , expected to be available, for instance, with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), provides full sensitivity to possible violations of local Lorentz invariance in strong gravitational fields in all directions of the sky. This PFE antenna array may eventually allow us to determine the direction of a preferred frame should it exist.  相似文献

Considerations, constraints and strategies for drilling on Mars   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effect of the environmental conditions on Mars—low temperature, low pressure, the uncertainty in the nature of the formations to be penetrated and the possibility of encountering ice —imply that a successful drilling system will have to be able to cope with a wide range of conditions. Systems using continuous drill pipe or wireline both offer attractive features and disadvantages, and the preferred choice may depend on the target depth. The drill bit will have to cope with a range of terrain, and we offer some suggestions for making a bit that will be able to drill in both hard and soft formations, and also be able to resist choking if it encounters ice or ice-bound materials. Since it will not be possible to use a liquid to remove the drilled cuttings on Mars, the cuttings removal system will probably use some form of auger, although it may be possible to use continuous or intermittent gas blasts. The sublimation of ice resulting from the heat of drilling in ice-containing formations may help in removing the cuttings, particularly as they are expected to be very fine as a result of the low power available for drilling. Drilling into ice bound soils was also found to be akin to drilling into ice-bound sandstones.  相似文献
