The ocean bottom seismograph (OBS) of the Institut für Geophysik, Hamburg (IfG) is designed for refraction seismic experiments and for recording microseismic noise. Hydrophone signals are recorded directly on a casette tape recorder with a band width of 3–60 Hz. Signals from three component 1 Hz seismometers are recorded on a 2nd casette tape recorder in FM for a frequency range of 0.1–1 Hz. A telemetering buoy at the surface is connected with the OBS by a polypropylene rope.  相似文献

A pop-up bottom seismic recorder designed for seismic refraction experiments was built by the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in 1968. The device is housed within a 71 cm diameter sphere weighing 270 kg when launched. signals picked up by a hydrophone are recorded in analogue form on magnetic tape in the band 2–100 Hz. The total continuous recording period is 12 hr but the lifetime of the system can be effectively extended by cycling the tape-recorders to allow shooting to go on for up to 3 days. Ballast release is by acoustic command or by pre-set clock. The instruments have been used in water depths from 150 to 4820 m making a total of 63 deployments with a 95% recovery rate. A compact and relatively low-cost ocean bottom seismograph has been constructed for use in marine seismic research. The instrument is deployed as a free-fall package and can record for 12.5 days. Signals from a vertical geophone, a hydrophone, and a clock are direct recorded on four channels of 6.35×10-3 m magnetic tape. A timed-release system returns the instrument to the surface.  相似文献

We describe the design and construction of an ocean bottom seismometer configured as a computer, based on an Intersil IM6100 microprocessor plus appropriate peripheral devices. The sensors consist of triaxial 1 Hz seismometers and a hydrophone, each sensor channel being filtered prior to digitizing so that typical noise spectra are whitened. Digital data are recorded serially on magnetic tape. The instrument is placed on the ocean bottom by allowing it to fall freely from just below the surface. An acoustic system allows precise determination of instrument position, acoustic recall, and transmission of operational information to the surface. Release from an expendable anchor is accomplished by redundant pyrotechnic bolts which can be fired by acoustic command or by precision timers.The operational flexibility provided by the micro-computer, which executes the DEC PDP8/E instruction set, enables optimum use of the 6-hr recording capacity (at 128 samples/second/channel) in the context of the particular experiment being performed.

A polyacrylic dome was anchored over natural sediments, enclosing a water volume of 0.125 m3 over an area of 0.45 m2 of sediment. A vertical convection was produced in the dome, by means of a small pump, to prevent formation of gradients. Oxygen partial pressure and temperature were measured at 20-min intervals by an automatic data system and stored on magnetic tape in digitized form. After some days the system was recovered. The data were read by a microprocessor system, interpreted, listed and plotted against time. Chemical and hydrographic data, from a sample taken at the location of the experiment at the instant it was started, were used as calibration data to calculate oxygen utilization of the sediments in the Kiel Bight.  相似文献

Ambient Noise Analysis of Deep-Ocean Measurements in the Northeast Pacific   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
During the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, the U.S. Navy conducted a series of ocean acoustic measurement exercises to support development of systems and techniques to detect nuclear submarines. The exercises and most of the technical documentation were classified. In 2003, a project was sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR, Arlington, VA) to declassify documentation and demonstrate the capability to recover acoustic data recorded on magnetic tape. One of the exercises, known as CHURCH OPAL, was selected for demonstration of acoustic data recovery. The record on magnetic tape spanned a period of ten days in September 1975 from a vertical assembly of hydrophones at a site midway between Hawaii and California. This paper presents selected excerpts from a key report (Wittenborn, 1976) on ambient noise that previously was unpublished and unavailable for general distribution. The earlier work is augmented with more complete and detailed analyses of the recovered digital data using modern analytical techniques. Data acquired from the hydrophones below critical depth enabled isolation of ambient noise due to distant shipping and local wind. The frequency band of the acoustic analyses was 30-500 Hz. The wind component of the ambient noise was evaluated at frequencies lower than reported by Wenz (1962).  相似文献

Ocean bottom seismographs designed to meet the requirements of both seismicity and refraction experiments have been operated extensively on twelve cruises (72 deployments). Signals from a hydrophone, and two geophones (horizontal and vertical) are direct recorded on a modified commercial tape recorder providing 10 day continuous recording at 1/40 ips and a 2–80 Hz band width. The free-fall deployment technique with timed ballast release has yielded a 93% recovery rate (96% over the most recent 24 deployments) despite frequently difficult weather and sea conditions. A three-component pop-up ocean-bottom seismograph was built at the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in 1978. It is constructed around a buoyant 71 cm diam aluminium alloy forged sphere which contains three 4.5 Hz orthogonal geophones and an external hydrophone. The instrument will record continuously in analogue mode for over eight days using a modified reel-to-reel tape-recorder running at 1.5 mm s-1. The geophones have a bandwidth of 2–25 Hz and the hydrophone bandwidth is 5–40 Hz. Ballast release is by pre-set clock or by acoustic command.Fifty-four deployments have been carried out in five cruises for the loss of only one instrument. Good recordings of dropped weights, airguns, explosions and earthquakes have been obtained.  相似文献

The seafloor spreading evolution in the Southern Indian Ocean is key to understanding the initial breakup of Gondwana. We summarize the structural lineaments deduced from the GEOSAT 10 Hz sampled raw altimetry data as well as satellite derived gravity anomaly map and the magnetic anomaly lineation trends from vector magnetic anomalies in the West Enderby Basin, the Southern Indian Ocean. The gravity anomaly maps by both Sandwell and Smith 1997, J. Geophys. Res. 102, 10039–10054 and 10 Hz raw altimeter data show almost the same general trends. However, curved structural trends, which turn from NNW–SSE in the south to NNE–SSW in the north, are detected only from gravity anomaly maps by 10 Hz raw altimeter data just to the east of Gunnerus Ridge. NNE–SSW structural trends and magnetic anomaly lineation trends that are perpendicular to them are observed between the Gunnerus Ridge and the Conrad Rise. To the west of Gunnerus Ridge, structural elements trend NNE–SSW and magnetic polarity changes are normal to them. In contrast, almost NNW–SSE structural trends and ENE–WSW magnetic polarity reversal strikes are dominant to the east of Gunnerus Ridge. Curved structural trends, which turn from WNW–ESE direction in the south to NNE–SSW direction in the west, and magnetic polarity reversal strikes that are almost perpendicular to them are observed just south of Conrad Rise. The magnetic polarity reversals may be parts of the Mesozoic magnetic anomaly sequence that formed along side of the structural lineaments before the long Cretaceous normal polarity superchron. Curved structural trends, detected only from gravity anomaly maps by 10 Hz raw altimeter data, most likely indicate slight changes in spreading direction from an initial NNW–SSE direction to NNE–SSW. Our results also suggest that these curved structural trends are fracture zones that formed during initial breakup of Gondwana.  相似文献

The water gun is a relatively new marine seismic sound source that produces an acoustic signal by an implosive rather than explosive mechanism. A comparison of the source characteristics of two different-sized water guns with those of conventional air guns shows the the water gun signature is cleaner and much shorter than that of a comparable-sized air gun: about 60–100 milliseconds (ms) for an 80-in3. (1.31-liter (I)) water gun compared with several hundred ms for an 80-in3. (1.31–1) air gun. The source spectra of water guns are richer in high frequencies (>200 Hz) than are those of air guns, but they also have less energy than those of air guns at low frequencies. A comparison between water gun and air gun reflection profiles in both shallow (Long Island Sound)-and deep (western Bermuda Rise)-water settings suggests that the water gun offers a good compromise between very high resolution, limited penetration systems (e.g. 3.5-kHz profilers and sparkers) and the large volume air guns and tuned air gun arrays generally used where significant penetration is required.  相似文献

Turbulent heat transfer in a swinging tube with a serrated twist tape insert was experimentally examined to reveal the effects of swinging oscillations on heat transfer for such a swirl tube under sea-going conditions. This swirl tube swings about two orthogonal axes under single and compound rolling and pitching oscillations. A selection of Nusselt number (Nu) measurements illustrates the influences of swinging oscillations with and without buoyancy interaction on heat transfer performances. Single rolling or pitching oscillation with the swinging frequencies ranging from 0.333 to 1 Hz reduces heat transfer levels from the static references. Synergistic effects of compound rolling and pitching oscillations with either harmonic or non-harmonic rhythms improve heat transfer performances. Buoyancy effects in the swinging swirl tube elevate local Nu, but are weakened as the relative strength of swinging force increases. A set of heat transfer correlations is derived that permits the individual and interactive effects of single and compound swinging force effects with buoyancy interactions on the developed flow heat transfer value () to be quantified.  相似文献

The southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) is spreading at rates (34–38 mm yr−1) that fall within a transitional range between those which characterize slow and intermediate spreading center morphology. To further our understanding of crustal accretion at these transitional spreading rates, we have carried out analysis of magnetic anomaly data from two detailed SeaBeam surveys of the MAR between 25°–27°30′S and 31°–34°30′S. Within these areas, the MAR is subdivided into 9 ridge segments bounded by large- and short-offset discontinuities of the ridge axis. From two-dimensional Fourier inversions of the magnetic anomaly data we establish the history of spreading within each ridge segment for the past 5 my and the evolution of the bounding ridge-axis discontinuities. We see evidence for the initiation and diminishment of small-offset discontinuities, and for the transition of rigid large-offset transform faults to less stable short-offset features. Individual ridge segments display independent spreading histories in terms of both the sense and amount of asymmetric spreading within each which have given rise to changes through time in the lengths of bounding ridge-axis discontinuities. Over the past 3–5 my, the short-offset discontinuities within the area have lengthened/shortened by approximately the same amount (∼ 10 km). During this same time period, larger-offset transform faults have remained comparatively constant in length. A shift in plate motion at anomaly 3 time may have given rise to change in the length of short-offset second-order discontinuities. However, the pattern of lengthening/shortening short-offset discontinuities we see is not simply related to the geometry of the plate boundary in these regions which precludes a simply relationship between plate motion changes and response at the plate boundary. We document a case of rapid (minimum 60 mm yr−1) small-scale rift propagation, occurring between 2.5 and 1.8 my, associated with transition of the Moore transform fault to an oblique-trending ridge-axis discontinuity. Propagation across the Moore discontinuity and similar propagation within the 31°–34°30’S area may be associated with the reduced age contrast in lithosphere across second-order discontinuities. Total opening rates within our northern survey area decreased from anomaly 4′ to 2 time and rates within both areas have increased since the Jaramillo. Total opening rates measured for anomaly intervals differ along the plate boundary significantly, more than expected with changing distance to the pole of rotation. These differences imply a degree of short-term non-rigid plate behaviour which may be associated with ridge segments acting as independent spreading cells. Magnetic polarity transition widths from our inversion studies may be used to infer a zone of crustal accretion which is 3–6 km wide, within the inner floor of the rift valley. A systematic increase of transition width with age would be expected if deeper crustal sources dominate the magnetic signal in older crust but this is not observed. We present results from three-dimensional analysis of magnetic anomaly data which show magnetization highs located at the intersection of the MAR with both large- and short-offset discontinuities. Within the central anomaly the highs exceed 15 A m−1 compared with a background of approximately 8–10 A m−1 and they persist for at least 2.5 my. The highs may be caused by eruption of fractionated strongly magnetized basalts at ridge-axis discontinuities with both large and small offsets.  相似文献

The pH of seawater can be measured in the field using potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods. The use of pH standards or buffers is an important aspect of the calibration of both methods in a laboratory on a common concentration scale. The buffers can also be used to monitor the performance of pH meter and spectrophotometer during a cruise. A procedure is described for the determination of the pH of seawater, where the proton concentration is expressed as moles kg-H2O−1 using seawater buffers. The buffers are prepared in synthetic seawater in the laboratory by the methods outlined by Bates and coworkers. We have prepared four buffers (Bis, Tris, Morpholine and 2-Aminopyridine) that cover a pH range from 6.8 to 8.8. The emf values of the buffers were measured with a H2, Pt/AgCl, Ag electrode system after their preparation and bottling for use at sea. The measured emf values were found to be in good agreement (±0.05 mV) with the original measurements of Bates and coworkers from 0 to 45°C. The measured pH of these buffers are in good agreement (±0.001 pH units) with the values calculated from the equations of Dickson on the total pH scale based on Bates et al. Studies are underway to access the long term stability of these buffers. We have also used these buffers to calibrate systems used to make potentiometric and spectrophotometric measurements of pH on seawater relative to the H2, Pt/Ag, AgCl electrode from 5 to 45°C.  相似文献

Three distinct ocean bottom seismograph (OBS) systems have been developed at the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics to satisfy the different requirements for short-range refraction and anisotropy experiments, long-range refraction experiments, and short-term and semi-permanent monitoring for earthquakes. One system, originally designed for semi-permanent use in conjunction with a monster buoy of the IDOE North Pacific Experiment has been modified for emplacement off Oahu. It contains 3-component 1 Hz seismometers and a hydrophone and obtains power and transmits data via tow conductor cable. Two additional systems were designed for short-term use: a 2 Hz telemetering system (TOBS); and 4.5 Hz free-fall pop-up system (POBS). The TOBS contains 3-component seismometers and a hydrophone and transmits data to the ship via light-weight single-conductor electromechanical cable and an HF-VHF radio link from a surface buoy. The bottom package also includes a backup tape recorder. This system exhibits the advantages of real-time data acquisition (e.g. precise timing, rapid appraisal of data quality, optimum use of explosives, and common recording with other data) and the complexities and difficulties associated with a deep-sea mooring. However, use of cable with near neutral bouyancy permits the design of a deep-water system with low weights and stress levels. The POBS is a self-contained package containing a vertical and single horizontal seismometer, hydrophone, cassette tape recorder, and pre-set timed release. This system is relatively simple and inexpensive. Total weight of 150 kg in air (before launch) permits emplacement and retrieval from a ship with no special equipment by two (strong) persons. A portable beach-profiling system is described that utilizes the hydrostatic pressure principle to measure vertical differences between a pressure sensor that follows the profile and a reference sensor on the shoreline. The two instruments are connected by a fluid-filled tube. Horizontal distance is determined by measuring the extension of the tube. The complete profiling system, including a data-logging capability on magnetic tape, is carried in a small four-wheel-drive vehicle. Vertical accuracy in ocean surveys is estimated to be 2.5 cm and horizontal accuracy approximately 1 m. This accuracy is sufficient to resolve sediment transport volumes in most applications.Surveying the underwater portion of nearshore beach profiles has presented significant accuracy problems in the past. The highest accuracy is required at the greatest offshore distance to resolve sediment motions. Boat-supported surveying systems, using the sea surface as a horizontal datum, suffer from the presence in the record of surface waves with a broad range of periods which are difficult to remove from the profile.A number of systems have been developed to eliminate the sea-surface intermediate reference and to measure the submerged portion of the profile directly. These systems involve large vehicles that are propelled or pulled along the bottom and are restricted by portability limitations. Results are presented from a high precision geophysical profile made at an altitude of about 100 m above the sea floor with the Deep Two instrument package, crossing the Red Sea at 17°30N. The emphasis is on the analysis and interpretation of the magnetic field, including an inversion which removes the distortions due to bathymetry and the orientation with respect to the earth's main field vector. The spreading rates are determined precisely and found to be highly asymmetric: only 5 mm yr-1 to the east and up to 10 mm yr-1 to the west. We conclude that the axis of spreading is located on a volcanic ridge, rather than on the axial graben, based on the presence of a zone of high magnetization. The magnetization high (40 Am-1) is about twice as great as found on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with the same instrument and analysis. The quality of the recording of the magnetic anomalies in the oceanic crust is much greater than expected for such a low spreading rate.  相似文献

The ocean bottom seismometer capsule contains a 1 Hz. vertical seismometer and triggerable or programmable digital recording system. The output of the seismometer is continuously digitized at a preselected rate of 64, 128, or 256 samples/sec. The digital data words are mixed with a time code and synchronization characters, serialized and passed through a 1536 sample shift register which acts as a delay line. The serial output bits are then encoded and recorded on a SONY TC800B tape recorder which is turned on when a seismic event occurs. The event trigger occurs when the seismic signal jumps to 8 times the time averaged input signal. A memory may be programmed to run the recorder on a schedule so that small amplitude signals from refraction shots are sure to be recorded. Data are recovered using the same recorder for playback and a decoder which provides an analog output for field data interpretation or a digital output for computer analysis. An acoustic transponder allows precise ranges between the capsule and ship to be determined. In addition, commands for the capsule to release or to transmit diagnostic data may be given from the surface ship. The capsule falls freely to the ocean bottom. After a predetermined time or when a release command is received, it is released from a 68 kg steel tripod and floats to the surface. A dual timer and explosive bolt system is used to increase recovery reliability.The first capsules were designed and constructed between October 1972 and October 1973. Good results were obtained from 38 out of 43 launchings made on six expeditions in 1974, 1975, and 1976. Four capsules have been lost.  相似文献

Low-frequency electromagnetic methods are used in geophysical exploration to detect the magnetic field distortion between a transmitter and receiver produced by locally conductive bodies. Both ground and airborne systems are in current use. It is possible to similarly conduct underwater geophysical exploration by using an underwater towed source of electromagnetic radiation and a receiving magnetic or electric field detector. The receiver can be towed on an auxiliary cable, mounted on a boom on the towing platform, or land based. An underwater towed electromagnetic source suitable for ocean-bottom exploration has been constructed, and its underwater propagation characteristics at low frequency have been studied. This underwater calibrated source (UCS) is 4 m long, weighs 383 kg in air, and can produce vertical and horizontal magnetic dipoles and a horizontal electric dipole. Powered by a current-feedback-controlled, high-power, modified sonar amplifier, the UCS can produce 9710 ampereturn.m2 of magnetic dipole or 200 A.m of electric dipole at 50 A at frequencies up to 200 Hz without significant attenuation from coil inductance. This paper concentrates on the mechanical, hydrodynamic, and magnetic design details of the UCS and the electrical system, consisting of the high-current drive power system and the shipboard monitoring system for attitude and depth detectors.  相似文献

 We report the occurrence of ferrobasalts recovered from the Central Indian Ocean Basin crust generated at the Southeast Indian Ridge during a phase of moderate to fast spreading accretion (∼110–190 mm/yr, full rate).The rocks are rich in plagioclase, FeO* (13–19%), and TiO2 (2.27–2.76%), poor in olivine and MgO (3.44–6.20%), and associated with topographic highs and increased amplitude magnetic anomalies corresponding to chrons A25 and A24. We suggest that secon dary eruptions from ancient N-MORB magma, which may have been trapped at a shallow depth in a horizon of neutral buoyancy, could have produced the ferrobasalts. A computer correlation technique was used to deduce the spreading history of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from 5 magnetic profiles between 28°S and 43°S. In general, several possible histories are indicated for each profile involving changes of spreading rate and faulting, some of which are easily overlooked by the visual method. The only spreading history that was consistent will all the profiles required spreading at approximately 2.2 cm yr-1 from 11 m.y.b.p. to approximately 5.5 m.y.b.p., followed by a decrease in rate to 1.7 cm yr-1 relative to the Vine (1966) magnetic reversal model based on the South Pacific. Comparison of the data with other reported spreading rate discontinuities suggests that the South Pacific may be reponsible for the reported spreading rate changes.  相似文献
