Giant Low Surface Brightness (GLSB) galaxies are amongst the most massive spiral galaxies that we know of in our Universe. Although they fall in the class of late type spiral galaxies, their properties are far more extreme. They have very faint stellar disks that are extremely rich in neutral hydrogen gas but low in star formation and hence low in surface brightness. They often have bright bulges that are similar to those found in early type galaxies. The bulges can host low luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) that have relatively low mass black holes. GLSB galaxies are usually isolated systems and are rarely found to be interacting with other galaxies. In fact many GLSB galaxies are found under dense regions close to the edges of voids. These galaxies have very massive dark matter halos that also contribute to their stability and lack of evolution. In this paper we briefly review the properties of this unique class of galaxies and conclude that both their isolation and their massive dark matter halos have led to the low star formation rates and the slower rate of evolution in these galaxies.  相似文献

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of spiral galaxies with measured axisymmetric background properties. We report here the results of the simulations for four galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, and NGC 3938. Using the observed radial distributions for the stellar velocity dispersions and the rotation velocities we have constructed the equilibrium models for the galactic disks in each galaxy and implemented two kinds of stability analyses - the linear global analysis and 2D-nonlinear simulations. In general, the global modal approach is able to reproduce the observed properties of the spiral arms in the galactic disks. The growth of spirals in the galactic disks can be physically understood in terms of amplification by over-reflection at the corotation resonance. Our results support the global modal approach as a theoretical explanation of spiral structure in galaxies. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The hypothesis that large-scale shocks accompanying spiral density waves are the main sources of cosmic-ray electrons for whole galactic disks has been tested utilizing results of 10.7 GHz observations of spiral galaxies. It is suggested that the 10.7 GHz emission of galactic disks is largely controlled by star-forming processes, and that large-scale shocks apparently play a minor role.  相似文献

We analyze the R-and K s-band photometric profiles for two independent samples of edge-on galaxies. The thickness of old stellar disks is shown to be related to the relative masses of the spherical and disk components of galaxies. The radial-to-vertical scale length ratio for galactic disks increases (the disks become thinner) with increasing total mass-to-light ratio of the galaxies, which reflects the relative contribution of the dark halo to the total mass, and with decreasing central deprojected disk brightness (density). Our results are in good agreement with numerical models of collisionless disks that evolved to a marginally stable equilibrium state. This suggests that, in most galaxies, the vertical stellar-velocity dispersion, on which the equilibrium-disk thickness depends, is close to a minimum value that ensures disk stability. The thinnest edge-on disks appear to be low-brightness galaxies in which the dark-halo mass far exceeds the stellar-disk mass.

General ideas, as well as experimental and theoretical efforts concerning the prediction and discovery of new structures in the disks of spiral galaxies – giant anticyclones - are reviewed. A crucial point is the development of a new method to restore the full vector velocity field of the galactic gas from the line-of-sight velocity field. This method can be used to get self-consistent solutions for the following problems: 1) determination of non-circular velocities associated with spiral-vortex structure; 2) determination of fundamental parameters of this structure: pattern speed, corotation radius, location of giant anticyclones; 3) refinement of galactic rotation curves taking into account regular non-circular motion in the spiral density wave, which makes it possible to build more accurate models of the mass distribution in the galaxy; 4) refinement of parameters of the rotating gaseous disk: inclination angle, center of rotation and position angle of the major dynamical axis, systematic velocity. The method is demonstrated using the restoration of the velocity field of the galaxy NGC 157 as an example. Results for this and some other spiral galaxies suggest that giant anticyclones are a universal property of galaxies with grand design structure.  相似文献

Direct and indirect evidence for global warping in galactic disks is reviewed. The existing data suggest that inversion symmetric warping is common in spiral galaxies, that it can occur throughout the inner and outer disk regions, and that it can involve stellar, dust, and gas components. The amplitude of the warping tends to be proportional to the radial distance from the galactic center and varies from instances wherein the disk is essentially flat to cases wherein thez-axis displacement is at least 30% of the galactocentric distance. Projection effects that are inherent features of warped optical disks are discussed.  相似文献

We present the results of our optical identifications of a set of X-ray sources from the INTEGRAL and SWIFT all-sky surveys. The optical data have been obtained with the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish Telescope (RTT-150). Nine X-ray sources have been identified with active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Two of them are located in the nearby spiral galaxies MCG-01-05-047 and NGC 973 seen almost edge-on. One source, IGR J16562-3301, is probably a BL Lac object (blazar). The remaining AGNs are observed as the starlike nuclei of spiral galaxies whose spectra exhibit broad emission lines. The relation between the hard X-ray (17–60 keV) luminosity and the [O III] 5007 line luminosity, log L x/L [O III] ≈ 2.1, holds good for most of the AGNs detected in hard X rays. However, the luminosities of some AGNs deviate from this relation. The fraction of such objects can reach ~20%. In particular, the [O III] line flux is lower for two nearby edge-on spiral galaxies. This can be explained by the effect of absorption in the galactic disks.  相似文献

Available velocity dispersion estimates for the old stellar population of galactic disks at galactocentric distances r?2L (where L is the photometric radial scale length of the disk) are used to determine the threshold local surface density of disks that are stable against gravitational perturbations. The mass of the disk Md calculated under the assumption of its marginal stability is compared with the total mass Mt and luminosity L B of the galaxy within r=4L. We corroborate the conclusion that a substantial fraction of the mass in galaxies is probably located in their dark halos. The ratio of the radial velocity dispersion to the circular velocity increases along the sequence of galactic color indices and decreases from the early to late morphological types. For most of the galaxies with large color indices (B–V)0>0.75, which mainly belong to the S0 type, the velocity dispersion exceeds significantly the threshold value required for the disk to be stable. The reverse situation is true for spiral galaxies: the ratios Md/LB for these agree well with those expected for evolving stellar systems with the observed color indices. This suggests that the disks of spiral galaxies underwent no significant dynamical heating after they reached a quasi-equilibrium stable state.  相似文献

The problem of determining the pattern of gas motions in the central regions of disk spiral galaxies is considered. Two fundamentally different cases—noncircular motions in the triaxial bar potential and motions in circular orbits but with orientation parameters different from those of the main disk—are shown to have similar observational manifestations in the line-of-sight velocity field of the gas. A reliable criterion is needed for the observational data to be properly interpreted. To find such a criterion, we analyze two-dimensional nonlinear hydrodynamic models of gas motions in barred disk galaxies. The gas line-of-sight velocity and surface brightness distributions in the plane of the sky are constructed for various inclinations of the galactic plane to the line of sight and bar orientation angles. We show that using models of circular motions for inclinations i>60° to analyze the velocity field can lead to the erroneous conclusions of a “tilted (polar) disk” at the galaxy center. However, it is possible to distinguish bars from tilted disks by comparing the mutual orientations of the photometric and dynamical axes. As an example, we consider the velocity field of the ionized gas in the galaxy NGC 972.  相似文献

It is shown that the radio luminosity of spiral galaxies correlates with their optical surface brightness. Galaxies with high surface brightness have stronger radio emission, on the average. Their ratio of radio and optical luminosities is also higher than for galaxies with lower surface brightness.  相似文献

It is shown that the giant low surface brightness galaxies (GLSBs), characterized by a large but diffuse disc component, can result from ordinary spiral galaxies through dynamical evolution. Numerical simulations indicate that the formation of a bar in a gravitationally unstable disc with high surface density induces non-circular motions and radial mixing of disc matter, leading to the flattening of the disc density profile. The resulting decrease in the disc central surface brightness is ∼1.5 magnitude, while the disc scalelength is nearly doubled, transforming a typical high surface brightness galaxy to a GSLB. This scenario seems promising especially for the GSLBs possessing a significant bulge, which are difficult to incorporate into the traditional Hubble sequence. Namely, because this disc transmutation can operate even if a moderate bulge component exists, the GSLBs with a bulge are argued to have resulted from the high surface brightness galaxies which had already possessed a bulge. The current picture naturally explains other observed characteristics of the GSLBs as well, including the propensity for having grand-design spiral arms and a bar, a high incidence of active nuclei, and galaxy environments.  相似文献

The luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in different environments is studied. A method proposed by the author is used to determine the LF of galaxies. It is found that the luminosity functions of galaxies of different morphological types in single galaxies and small groups do not differ greatly. The luminosity functions of galactic clusters differ greatly from the analogous functions for other systems. A relatively large number of faint galaxies is observed in clusters. Groups with low dispersions in their radial velocities and with small average pairwise distances between the members contain relatively many faint galaxies and relatively few bright galaxies compared to groups with large dispersions in their radial velocities and large average pairwise distances between members. This applies to elliptical and lenticular galaxies, as well as to spiral and irregular galaxies.  相似文献

Spiral galaxies host dynamically important magnetic fields which can affect gas flows in the disks and halos. Total magnetic fields in spiral galaxies are strongest (up to 30 μG) in the spiral arms where they are mostly turbulent or tangled. Polarized synchrotron emission shows that the resolved regular fields are generally strongest in the interarm regions (up to 15 μG). Faraday rotation measures of radio polarization vectors in the disks of several spiral galaxies reveal large-scale patterns which are signatures of coherent fields generated by a mean-field dynamo. Magnetic fields are also observed in radio halos around edge-on galaxies at heights of a few kpc above the disk. Cosmic-ray driven galactic winds transport gas and magnetic fields from the disk into the halo. The halo scale height and the electron lifetime allow to estimate the wind speed. The magnetic energy density is larger than the thermal energy density, but smaller than the kinetic energy density of the outflow. There is no observation yet of a halo with a large-scale coherent dynamo pattern. A global wind outflow may prevent the operation of a dynamo in the halo. Halo regions with high degrees of radio polarization at very large distances from the disk are excellent tracers of interaction between galaxies or ram pressure of the intergalactic medium. The observed extent of radio halos is limited by energy losses of the cosmic-ray electrons. Future low-frequency radio telescopes like LOFAR and the SKA will allow to trace halo outflows and their interaction with the intergalactic medium to much larger distances.  相似文献

We re-examine the Fall & Efstathiou scenario for galaxy formation, including the dark halo gravitational reaction to the formation of the baryon disc, as well as continuous variations in the intrinsic halo density profile. The recently published rotation curves of low surface brightness (LSB) and dwarf galaxies together with previously known scaling relations provide sufficient information on the present-day structure of late-type disc galaxies to invert the problem. By requiring that the models reproduce all the observational restrictions we can fully constrain the initial conditions of galaxy formation, with a minimum of assumptions, in particular without the need to specify a cold dark matter (CDM) halo profile. This allows one to solve for all the initial conditions, in terms of the halo density profile, the baryon fraction and the total angular momentum. We find that a unique initial halo shape is sufficient to accurately reproduce the rotation curves of both LSB and normal late-type spiral galaxies. This unique halo profile differs substantially from that found in standard CDM models. A galactic baryon fraction of 0.065 is found. The initial value of the dimensionless angular momentum is seen to be the principal discriminator between the galaxy classes we examine. The present-day scalings between structural parameters are seen to originate in the initial conditions.  相似文献

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) have received little attention in previous studies. We present a detailed spectral analysis of 194 LSBGs from the Impey et al. (1996) APM LSBG sample which has been observed spec-troscopically by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5). Our elaborate spectral analysis enables us to carry out, for the first time, reliable spectral classification of nuclear processes in LSBGs based on the standard emission line diagnostic diagrams in a rigorous way. Star-forming galaxies are common, as found in about 52% of LSBGs. We find that, contrary to some previous claims, the fraction of galaxies that contain AGNs is significantly lower than that found in nearby normal galaxies of high surface brightness. This is qualitatively in line with the finding of Impey et al. This result holds true even within each morphological type from Sa to Sc. LSBGs that have larger central stellar ve-locity dispersions or larger physical sizes tend to have a higher chance of harboring an AGN. For three AGNs with broad emission lines, the black hole masses estimated from the emission lines are broadly consistent with the well known M-σ* relation established for normal galaxies and AGNs.  相似文献

We have produced a sample of 58 edge-on spiral galaxies at redshifts z ~ 1 selected in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. For all galaxies we have analyzed the 2D brightness distributions in the V606 and i775 filters and measured the radial (hr) and vertical (hz) exponential scale lengths of the brightness distribution. We have obtained evidence that the relative thickness of the disks of distant galaxies, i.e., the ratio of the vertical and radial scale lengths, on average, exceeds the relative thickness of the disks of nearby spiral galaxies. The vertical scale length hz of the stellar disks of galaxies shows no big changes at z = 1. The possibility of the evolution of the radial scale length hz for the brightness distribution with redshift is discussed.

In the first paper of this series, we directly studied the mathematical forms, symmetry of spiral structure, and the projection of galactic discs on the images, and measured the pitch angles of the spiral arms and inclination angles of the galactic discs for 60 spiral galaxies. In this second paper, we estimate the vertical scale parameters of 48 non-edge-on spiral galaxies based on the method proposed by Peng et al. and on the results given in Paper Ⅰ. As we know, for edge-on disc galaxies we can obtain the vertical scale parameter from the photometry, once a mathematical form is specified for the vertical light distribution. For non-edgeon galaxies, some other methods have to be used. The statistical result was that the vertical scale parameter is comparable for edge-on and non-edge-on galaxies, although it is obtained from two very different methods.  相似文献

Recent observations show the evidence of warm ionized interstellar medium (WIM) in some dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs). The presence of WIM should be accounted for since diffuse plasma in dE is easy to escape owing to galactic wind during the star-burst epoch and ram pressure of intra-cluster medium. In this paper, we present a possible scenario of origin of dE with WIM. By estimating time-scale of ram pressure stripping of interstellar medium, we find dE with WIM is able to emerge when a field dwarf galaxy enters into a cluster of galaxies. Then, the author suggests that low surface brightness galaxies and blue compact dwarf galaxies can be a precursor of dE with WIM.  相似文献

Five anomalous properties of bar-within-ring galaxies, which comprise the majority of barred spiral galaxies, are reported. These properties appear to be in conflict with conventional ideas about galactic morphology, but are in keeping with the projection effect model for barred spiral galaxies.  相似文献
