We study the transition from regular to chaotic motion in a prolate elliptical galaxy dynamical model with a bulge and a dense nucleus. Our numerical investigation shows that stars with angular momentum Lz less than or equal to a critical value Lzc,moving near the galactic plane, are scattered to higher z,when reaching the central region of the galaxy, thus displaying chaotic motion. An inverse square law relationship was found to exist between the radius of the bulge and the critical value Lzc of the angular m...  相似文献

A simple dynamical model for a BL Lacertae active galaxy is presented. The model consists of a logarithmic potential with an additional term representing internal perturbations. The time independent and the evolving model are investigated. In both cases we search for regular and chaotic motion and study the velocity distribution near the centre of the system. Numerical calculations suggest that responsible for the chaotic phenomena is the internal perturbation, the flattening parameter and the dense nucleus. The radius of the nucleus also affects the maximum velocity in the central regions of the galaxy. Our numerical outcomes are supported by theoretical arguments and analytical calculations. A linking of our numerical outcomes to observational data is also presented. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We present a method for recovering the distribution functions of edge-on thin axisymmetric discs directly from their observable kinematic properties. The most generally observable properties of such a stellar system are the line-of-sight velocity distributions of the stars at different projected radii along the galaxy. If the gravitational potential is known, then the general two-integral distribution function can be reconstructed using the shapes of the high-velocity tails of these line-of-sight distributions. If the wrong gravitational potential is adopted, then a distribution function can still be constructed using this technique, but the low-velocity parts of the observed velocity distributions will not be reproduced by the derived dynamical model. Thus, the gravitational potential is also tightly constrained by the observed kinematics.  相似文献

We apply the modified acceleration law obtained from Einstein gravity coupled to a massive skew symmetric field,   F μνλ  , to the problem of explaining X-ray galaxy cluster masses without exotic dark matter. Utilizing X-ray observations to fit the gas mass profile and temperature profile of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) with King 'β-models', we show that the dynamical masses of the galaxy clusters resulting from our modified acceleration law fit the cluster gas masses for our sample of 106 clusters without the need of introducing a non-baryonic dark matter component. We are further able to show for our sample of 106 clusters that the distribution of gas in the ICM as a function of radial distance is well fitted by the dynamical mass distribution arising from our modified acceleration law without any additional dark matter component. In a previous work, we applied this theory to galaxy rotation curves and demonstrated good fits to our sample of 101 low surface brightness, high surface brightness and dwarf galaxies including 58 galaxies that were fitted photometrically with the single-parameter mass-to-light ratio ( M / L )stars. The results obtained there were qualitatively similar to those obtained using Milgrom's phenomenological Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) model, although the determined galaxy masses were quantitatively different, and MOND does not show a return to Keplerian behaviour at extragalactic distances. The results obtained here are compared to those obtained using Milgrom's phenomenological MOND model which does not fit the X-ray galaxy cluster masses unless an auxiliary dark matter component is included.  相似文献

A three‐dimensional dynamical model for a galaxy hosting a BL Lacertae object is constructed. The model consists of a logarithmic potential representing an elliptical host galaxy with a bulge of radius cb and a dense massive nucleus. Using numerical experiments, we try to distinguish between regular and chaotic motion in both 2D and 3D system. In particular, we investigate how the basic parameters of our model, such as the mass of the nucleus, the internal perturbation and the flattening parameters influence the amount and the degree of chaos. Interesting correlations are presented for both 2D and 3D dynamical models. Our numerical results are explained and supported using elementary theoretical arguments and analytical calculations. Of particular interest is the local integral of motion which have been found to exist in the vicinity of stable periodic points. The obtained numerical outcomes of the present research are linked and also compared with several data derived from observations. (© 2014 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Through the morphological classifications for 290 member galaxies in the nearby galaxy Abell 2199, the star formation rates and their relations with their morphology and related physical properties are investigated in this paper. It is found that the typical star formation rate in galaxies of this galaxy cluster is strongly correlated with the Hα equivalent width, and the degree of discontinuity of the galaxy spectrum at 4000 Å is also strongly correlated with the stellar mass included in the galaxy. It is also found that star formation activities in these galaxies do not exhibit the obvious circumstance effect. This result indicates that this galaxy cluster is still situated at the stage of the violent dynamical evolution and far from the dynamical equilibrium.  相似文献

The planetary nebula populations of relatively nearby galaxies can be easily observed and provide both a distance estimate and a tool with which dynamical information can be obtained. Usually the requisite radial velocities are obtained by multi-object spectroscopy once the planetary nebulae have been located by direct imaging. Here we report on a technique for measuring planetary nebula kinematics using the double-beam ISIS spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope in a novel slitless mode, which enables the detection and radial velocity measurements to be combined into a single step. The results on our first target, the Sab galaxy NGC 4736, allow the velocity dispersion of the stellar population in a disc galaxy to be traced out to four scalelengths for the first time and are consistent with a simple isothermal sheet model.  相似文献

We investigate the dynamical effects of an interaction between an initially barred galaxy and a small spherical companion using an N -body/smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics algorithm. In the models described here the small companion passes through the disc of the larger galaxy nearly perpendicular to its plane. The impact positions and times are varied with respect to the phase of the bar and the dynamical evolution of the disc.
The interactions produce expanding ring structures, offset bars, spokes and other asymmetries in the stars and gas. These characteristic signatures of the interaction are present in the disc for about 1 Gyr. We find that in some cases it is possible to destroy the bar while keeping the disc structure. In general, the central impacts cause larger damage to the bar and the disc than the peripheral ones. The interaction tends to accelerate the transition from a strongly-barred galaxy to a weakly- or non-barred galaxy. The final disc morphology is determined more by the impact position relative to the bar rather than the impact time.  相似文献

We perform a stability test of triaxial models in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) using N -body simulations. The triaxial models considered here have densities that vary with   r −1  in the centre and   r −4  at large radii. The total mass of the model varies from 108 to  1010 M  , representing the mass scale of dwarfs to medium-mass elliptical galaxies, respectively, from deep MOND to quasi-Newtonian gravity. We build triaxial galaxy models using the Schwarzschild technique, and evolve the systems for 200 Keplerian dynamical times (at the typical length-scale of 1.0 kpc). We find that the systems are virial overheating, and in quasi-equilibrium with the relaxation taking approximately 5 Keplerian dynamical times (1.0 kpc). For all systems, the change of the inertial (kinetic) energy is less than 10 per cent (20 per cent) after relaxation. However, the central profile of the model is flattened during the relaxation and the (overall) axis ratios change by roughly 10 per cent within 200 Keplerian dynamical times (at 1.0 kpc) in our simulations. We further find that the systems are stable once they reach the equilibrium state.  相似文献

The pattern speed is a defining parameter of any barred galaxy. A large number of model-dependent techniques have therefore been developed to derive the pattern speed. However, the only model-independent technique for measuring this quantity – the Tremaine–Weinberg method – has hitherto been applied to just one case, the SB0 galaxy NGC 936. In this paper, we apply the technique to a second system, the SBa galaxy NGC 4596. The resulting estimate for the pattern speed is Ωp=52±13 km s−1 kpc−1. This result is corroborated by a spectrum obtained along the major axis of the bar in this system. The corotation radius associated with this pattern speed lies just beyond the end of the bar indicating a fast bar. Combining the bar major-axis spectra with data obtained from a Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 image, we also find strong evidence for a nuclear disc.  相似文献

The dynamical signatures of the interaction between galaxies in clusters and the intracluster medium (ICM) can potentially yield significant information about the structure and dynamical history of clusters. To develop our understanding of this phenomenon we present results from numerical modelling of the galaxy–ICM interaction, as the galaxy moves through the cluster. The simulations have been performed for a broad range of ICM temperatures ( kT cl=1, 4 and 8 keV), representative of poor clusters or groups through to rich clusters.
There are several dynamical features that can be identified in these simulations. For supersonic galaxy motion, a leading bow shock is present, and also a weak gravitationally focused wake or tail behind the galaxy (analogous to Bondi–Hoyle accretion). For galaxies with higher mass replenishment rates and a denser interstellar medium (ISM), the dominant feature is a dense ram-pressure stripped tail. In line with other simulations, we find that the ICM/galaxy–ISM interaction can result in complex time-dependent dynamics, with ram-pressure stripping occurring in an episodic manner.
In order to facilitate this comparison between the observational consequences of dynamical studies and X-ray observations we have calculated synthetic X-ray flux and hardness maps from these simulations. These calculations predict that the ram-pressure stripped tail will usually be the most visible feature, though in nearby galaxies the bow shock preceding the galaxy should also be apparent in deeper X-ray observations. We briefly discuss these results and compare them with X-ray observations of galaxies where there is evidence of such interactions.  相似文献

We detail an innovative new technique for measuring the two-dimensional (2D) velocity moments (rotation velocity, velocity dispersion and Gauss–Hermite coefficients h 3 and h 4) of the stellar populations of galaxy haloes using spectra from Keck DEIMOS (Deep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph) multi-object spectroscopic observations. The data are used to reconstruct 2D rotation velocity maps.
Here we present data for five nearby early-type galaxies to ∼three effective radii. We provide significant insights into the global kinematic structure of these galaxies, and challenge the accepted morphological classification in several cases. We show that between one and three effective radii the velocity dispersion declines very slowly, if at all, in all five galaxies. For the two galaxies with velocity dispersion profiles available from planetary nebulae data we find very good agreement with our stellar profiles. We find a variety of rotation profiles beyond one effective radius, i.e. rotation speed remaining constant, decreasing and increasing with radius. These results are of particular importance to studies which attempt to classify galaxies by their kinematic structure within one effective radius, such as the recent definition of fast- and slow-rotator classes by the Spectrographic Areal Unit for Research on Optical Nebulae project. Our data suggest that the rotator class may change when larger galactocentric radii are probed. This has important implications for dynamical modelling of early-type galaxies. The data from this study are available on-line.  相似文献

Determining the internal kinematics of a galaxy from planetary nebulae (PN) is usually a two-step process in which the candidate PN are first identified in a target galaxy and then, in a follow-up run, spectra are obtained. We have implemented a new technique in which two dispersed images at the wavelength of the [O  iii ] emission line at 5007 A˚ are combined to yield positions, magnitudes and velocities of the PN population in a single step. A reduction in observing time of about a factor of 2 is attainable. We present here the proof-of-principle results.  相似文献

Results of spectroscopic and photometric studies for the locally isolated lenticular galaxy NGC 4124 are presented. A model of the mass distribution consistent with photometric data has been constructed on the basis of a kinematic analysis. In this model, the halo mass within the optical radius is almost half the diskmass. The disk is shown to be in a dynamical state close to amarginally stable one. This rules out dynamical disk heating for the galaxy through a strong external action or a merger with a massive system. However, the presence of a gaseous disk inclined to the main plane of the galaxy in the central kiloparsec region suggests probable cannibalization of a small satellite that also produced a late starburst in the central region. This is confirmed by the younger mean age (~2 Gyr) of the stellar population in the galaxy’s central region than the disk age (5–7 Gyr).  相似文献

We present a dynamical model for an active galaxy. Our model is a mass model with a disk, nucleus, and halo components. Numerical calculations and theoretical evidence show, that for a fixed value of mass of the galaxy the stellar velocities in the central region decrease as the mass of halo increases. Furthermore, the motion tends to be regular while, when the halo component is absent, the majority of orbits are chaotic. The dynamical evolution of the system is also studied when mass is transported from the halo to the disk and the nucleus. Our results are compared to the recently obtained observation data for active galaxies.  相似文献

We discuss the problem of using stellar kinematics of early-type galaxies to constrain the orbital anisotropies and radial mass profiles of galaxies. We demonstrate that compressing the light distribution of a galaxy along the line of sight produces approximately the same signature in the line-of-sight velocity profiles as radial anisotropy. In particular, fitting spherically symmetric dynamical models to apparently round, isotropic face-on flattened galaxies leads to a spurious bias towards radial orbits in the models, especially if the galaxy has a weak face-on stellar disc. Such face-on stellar discs could plausibly be the cause of the radial anisotropy found in spherical models of intermediate luminosity ellipticals such as NGC 2434, 3379 and 6703.
In the light of this result, we use simple dynamical models to constrain the outer mass profiles of a sample of 18 round, early-type galaxies. The galaxies follow a Tully–Fisher relation parallel to that for spiral galaxies, but fainter by at least 0.8 mag ( I -band) for a given mass. The most luminous galaxies show clear evidence for the presence of a massive dark halo, but the case for dark haloes in fainter galaxies is more ambiguous. We discuss the observations that would be required to resolve this ambiguity.  相似文献

Frequency map analysis of the orbital structure in elliptical galaxies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present an application of the frequency map analysis to an elliptical galaxy which is represented by a generalization of a double-power-law spherical mass model. The density distribution of this model varies as r −γ close to the centre and as r −4 at large radii. We study the case with γ = 1, which is known as the 'weak-cusp' model and which represents well the density profile of the 'core' galaxies observed by the Hubble Space Telescope . The final objective of our work is to improve our understanding of the dynamics of elliptical galaxies in a similar way to Merritt &38; Fridman, finding the regions of stochasticity, looking for resonances that might play an important role in sustaining the triaxial morphology, and analysing the diffusion of orbits. To this end, we use the frequency map analysis of Laskar, which has been applied widely in the field of celestial mechanics but which is a relatively new technique in the area of galactic dynamics. Finally, we show some useful features of this method in understanding the global dynamical structure of the system.  相似文献

We present V -band surface photometry and major-axis kinematics of stars and ionized gas of three early-type spiral galaxies, namely NGC 772, 3898 and 7782. For each galaxy we present a self-consistent Jeans model for the stellar kinematics, adopting the light distribution of bulge and disc derived by means of a two-dimensional parametric photometric decomposition. This allows us to investigate the presence of non-circular gas motions, and derive the mass distribution of luminous and dark matter in these objects.
NGC 772 and 7782 have apparently normal kinematics with the ionized gas tracing the gravitational equilibrium circular speed. This is not true in the innermost region (| r |≲8 arcsec) of NGC 3898, where the ionized gas is rotating more slowly than the circular velocity predicted by dynamical modelling. This phenomenon is common in the bulge-dominated galaxies for which dynamical modelling enables us to make the direct comparison between the gas velocity and the circular speed, and it poses questions about the reliability of galaxy mass distributions derived by the direct decomposition of the observed ionized-gas rotation curve into the contributions of luminous and dark matter.

In this paper we analyse the relations between a previously described oblate Jaffe model for an ellipsoidal galaxy and the observed quantities for NGC 2974, and obtain the length and velocity scales for a relevant elliptical galaxy model. We then derive the finite total mass of the model from these scales, and finally find a good fit of an isotropic oblate Jaffe model by using the Gauss-Hermite fit parameters and the observed ellipticity of the galaxy NGC 2974. The model is also used to predict the total luminous mass of NGC 2974, assuming that the influence of dark matter in this galaxy on the image, ellipticity and Gauss-Hermite fit parameters of this galaxy is negligible within the central region, of radius 0.5R e.  相似文献
