An investigation of the influence of mineral dust ontrace gas cycles in the troposphere is carried out inthis study. A 3D regional scale atmospheric chemistrymodel (STEM-III) which includes aerosol processes isused for the numerical simulations for May 1987.Heterogeneous interactions between gaseous species(SO2, N2O5, HNO3, HO2andH2O2) and the dust particles are considered.Emissions of dust behind convective cold fronts aremodeled. The transport and distribution of mineraldust predicted from the model is compared withsatellite measurements (aerosol index from TOMS). Themodel is shown to capture the synoptic variability inthe observed aerosol index. Calculations show twomajor dust events in May 1987, during which thedust levels close to the source reach more than500 g/m3. The transport of dust is mostlyrestricted towards the north, with the net continentaloutflow of 6 Tg for the entire month. Results showthat the presence of mineral aerosol can greatlyimpact sulfate and nitrate distributions. Averagedover the month of May, the presence of dust isestimated to increase particulate sulfate and nitratelevels in east Asia by 40%. Furthermore, the sulfateand nitrate on the dust particles are predicted to beassociated with the coarse mode (3–5 m particlediameter), consistent with observations over Japan. The influence of mineral dust on the photochemicaloxidant cycle is also investigated. For the entiremonth, a5–10% decrease in boundary layer ozone ispredicted by the model closer to regions of higherdust levels. The ratio of nitric acid to NOx overmarine regions is reduced by a factor between 1 and 2in the boundary layer to more than 2 in the freetroposphere as a result of aerosol processes.  相似文献

Long-pathlength infrared absorption spectroscopy wasused to investigate nitric acid-soot aerosol chemistryat 298 K and 0.5% relative humidity. Experimentswere performed by introducing nitric acid vapor(PHNO 3 3 Pa, Ptotal 40 kPa) intoateflon-coated chamber and initiating acquisition ofinfrared spectra at 3 minute time intervals. After 36minutes of data collection, soot powder was rapidlyexpanded into nitric acid contained in the chamber togenerate a soot-HNO3 aerosol. Infrared spectracollected before, and after, soot introduction to thechamber were used to characterize chamber wallreaction processes and soot aerosol chemistry, respectively. Three soot types were investigated(Degussa FW2, Cabot Monarch 1000, and crystallinegraphite), each yielding similar chemistry. Upon sootintroduction to the chamber both HNO3 uptake andNO2 production occurred, with the molar ratio ofHNO3 uptake to NO2 production varying from1.2 to 2.9 for the three soot types studied. Unreacted HNO3 was present at the conclusion ofeach of the aerosol experiments, indicating incompleteconversion of HNO3 into NO2. Thisobservation suggested that `active' sites at the sootsurface responsible for the reduction of HNO3 arenot regenerated (i.e., formed) in the reactionprocess. In essence, a titration occurred betweenthese active sites and HNO3. The NO2concentrations produced, the soot mass concentrationsused, and the BET measured specific surface area ofthe powders allowed computation of the surface densityof active sites of 4.0 × 10-18 m2/active site(describing all three powders studied). This is thefirst reported measurement of surface density ofactive sites for nitric acid chemistry on soot. Sinceatmospheric heterogeneous reactions that exhibitsurface deactivation may, in principle, affect tracegas concentration, we perform an assessment in thisregard.  相似文献

We present here experimental determinations of mass accommodation coefficients using a low pressure tube reactor in which monodispersed droplets, generated by a vibrating orifice, are brought into contact with known amounts of trace gases. The uptake of the gases and the accommodation coefficient are determined by chemical analysis of the aqueous phase. We report in this article measurements of exp=(6.0±0.8)×10–2 at 298 K and with a total pressure of 38 Torr for SO2, (5.0±1.0)×10–2 at 297 K and total pressure of 52 Torr for HNO3, (1.5±0.6)×10–3 at 298 K and total pressure of 50 Torr for NO2, (2.4±1.0)×10–2 at 290 K and total pressure of 70 Torr for NH3.These values are corrected for mass transport limitations in the gas phase leading to =(1.3±0.1)×10–1 (298 K) for SO2, (1.1±0.1)×10–1 (298 K) for HNO3, (9.7±0.9)×10–2 (290 K) for NH3, (1.5±0.8)×10–3 (298 K) for NO2 but this last value should not be considered as the true value of for NO2 because of possible chemical interferences. Results are discussed in terms of experimental conditions which determine the presence of limitations on the mass transport rates of gaseous species into an aqueous phase, which permits the correction of the experimental values.  相似文献

This paper shows a comparative study of particle and surface ozone concentration measurements undertaken simultaneously at two distinct semi-urban locations distant by 4 km at Saint-Denis, the main city of La Réunion island (21.5° S, 55.5° E) during austral autumn (May 2000). Black carbon (BC) particles measured at La Réunion University, the first site situated in the suburbs of Saint-Denis, show straight-forward anti-correlation with ozone, especially during pollution peaks ( 650 ng/m3 and 15 ppbv, for BC and ozone respectively) and at night-time (90 ng/m3 and 18.5 ppbv, for BC and ozone respectively). NOx (NO and NO2) and PM10 particles were also measured in parallel with ozone at Lislet Geoffroy college, a second site situated closer to the city centre. NOx and PM10 particles are anti-correlated with ozone, with noticeable ozone destruction during peak hours (mean 6 and 9 ppbv at 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. respectively) when NOx and PM10 concentrations exhibit maximum values. We observe a net daytime ozone creation (19 ppbv, O3 +4.5 ppbv), following both photochemical and dynamical processes. At night-time however, ozone recovers (mean 11 ppbv) when anthropogenic activities are lower ([BC] 100 ng/m3). BC and PM10 concentration variation obtained during an experiment at the second site shows that the main origin of particles is anthropogenic emission (vehicles), which in turn influences directly ozone variability. Saint-Denis BC and ozone concentrations are also compared to measurements obtained during early autumn (March 2000) at Sainte-Rose (third site), a quite remote oceanic location. Contrarily to Saint-Denis observations, a net daytime ozone loss (14.5 ppbv at 4 p.m.) is noticed at Sainte-Rose while ozone recovers (17 ppbv) at night-time, with however a lower amplitude than at Saint-Denis. Preliminary results presented here are handful data sets for modelling and which may contribute to a better comprehension of ozone variability in relatively polluted areas.  相似文献

Results from numerical investigations regarding the exchange of HNO3, NH3, and NH4NO3 between the atmosphere and the biosphere are presented. The investigations were performed with a modified inferential method which is based on the generally accepted micrometeorological ideas of the transfer of momentum, sensible heat and matter near the Earth's surface and the chemical reactions among these nitrogen compounds. This modified inferential method calculates the micrometeorological quantities (such as the friction velocity and the fluxes of sensible and latent heat), the height-invariant fluxes of the composed chemically conservative trace species with group concentrationsc 1=[HNO3]+[NH4NO3] (total nitrate),c 2=[NH3]+[NH4NO3] (total ammonia), andc 3=[HNO3]-[NH3] as well as the fluxes of the individual nitrogen compounds. The parameterization of the fluxes is based on the flux-gradient relationships in the turbulent region of the atmospheric surface layer. The modified inferential method requires only the data of wind velocity, temperature, humidity and concentrations (HNO3, NH3, and NH4NO3) measured at a reference height by stations of a monitoring network.  相似文献

An in-cloud scavenging case study of the major ions (NH4 +, SO4 2- and NO3 -) determining the cloudwater composition at a mountain site (1620 m.a.s.l.) is presented. A comparison between in-cloud measurements of the cloudwater composition, liquid water content, gas concentrations and aerosol concentrations and pre-cloud gas and aerosol concentrations yields the following results. Cloudwater concentrations resulted from scavenging of about half of the available NH3, aerosol NH4 +, aerosol NO3 -, and aerosol SO4 2-. Approximately a third of the SO2 was scavenged by the cloudwater and oxidized to SO4 2-. Cloud acidity during the first two hours of cloud interception (pH 3.24) was determined mostly by the scavenged gases (NH3, SO2, and HNO3); aerosol contributions to the acidity were found to be small. Observations of gas and aerosol concentrations at three elevations prior to several winter precipitation events indicated that NH3 concentrations are typically half (12–80 %) of the total (gas and aerosol) N (-III) concentrations. HNO3 typically is present at much lower concentrations (1–55 %) than aerosol NO3 -. Concentrations of SO2 are a substantial component of total sulfur, with concentrations averaging 60 % (14–76 %) of the total S (IV and VI).  相似文献

A liquid jet of 90 m diameter and variable length has been utilized to determine absorption rates and, hence, mass accommodation coefficients , of atmospheric trace gases. The compounds investigated are HCl (0.01), HNO3 (0.01), N2O5 (0.005), peroxyacetyl nitrate (>0.001), and HONO (0.005). It is concluded that the absorption of these trace gases by liquid atmospheric water is not significantly retarded by interfacial mass transport. The strengths and limitations of the liquid jet technique for measuring mass accommodation coefficients are explored.  相似文献

A modified profile method for determining the vertical deposition (or/and exhalation) fluxes of NO, NO2, ozone, and HNO3 in the atmospheric surface layer is presented. This method is based on the generally accepted micrometeorological ideas of the transfer of momentum, sensible heat and matter near the Earth's surface and the chemical reactions among these trace gases. The analysis (aerodynamic profile method) includes a detailed determination of the micrometeorological quantities (such as the friction velocity, the fluxes of sensible and latent heat, the roughness length and the zero plane displacement), and of the height-invariant fluxes of the composed chemically conservative trace gases with group concentrations c 1=[NO]+[NO2]+[HNO3], c 2=[NO2]+[O3]+3/2·[HNO3], and c 3=[NO]–[O3]–1/2·[HNO3]. The fluxes of the individual species are finally determined by the numerical solution of a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the concentrations of ozone and HNO3 (decoding method). The parameterization of the fluxes is based on the flux-gradient relationships in the turbulent region of the atmospheric surface layer. The model requires only the vertical profile data of wind velocity, temperature and humidity and concentrations of NO, NO2, ozone, and HNO3.The method has been applied to vertical profile data obtained at Jülich (September 1984) and collected in the BIATEX joint field experiment LOVENOX (Halvergate, U.K., September 1989).  相似文献

The formation yields of nine carbonyl products are reported from the gas-phase OH radical-initiated reactions (in the presence of NO x ) and the O3 reactions with seven monoterpenes. The products were identified using GC/MS and GC-FTIR and quantified by GC-FID analyses of samples collected on Tenax solid adsorbent cartridges. The identities of products from camphene, limonene and -pinene were confirmed by comparison with authentic standards. Sufficient quantities of products from the 3-carene, limonene, -pinene, sabinene and terpinolene reactions were isolated to allow structural confirmation by proton NMR spectroscopy. The measured total carbonyl formation yields ranged from non-detectable for the OH radical reaction with camphene and the O3 reactions with 3-carene and limonene to 0.5 for the OH radical reaction with limonene and the O3 reaction with sabinene.  相似文献

Deposition of atmospheric mineral particles in the North Pacific Ocean   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Total deposition of atmospheric mineral particles (wet plus dry) has been measured during consecutive two-week sampling intervals from January, 1981 to March, 1982 at four island stations (Midway, Oahu, Enewetak, and Fanning) of the SEAREX Asian Dust Study Network in the North Pacific. The total deposition of mineral aerosol during the period from February to June is higher than that during the period from July to January at most of the stations. A systematic geographical trend is apparent in the dust flux, with greater fluxes at higher latitudes. The deposition values are correlated with the atmospheric mineral particle concentrations at these stations. The mineral particles are transported from arid regions in Asia to the North Pacific, and the annual dust deposition to the ocean appears to be dominated by sporadic dust events of short duration. Wet deposition dominates the removal of dust particles from the atmosphere over the North Pacific. The total deposition of atmospheric mineral material to the central North Pacific is estimated to be 20×1012 g yr-1.  相似文献

Using the chemical composition of snow and ice of a central Greenland ice core, we have investigated changes in atmospheric HNO3 chemistry following the large volcanic eruptions of Laki (1783), Tambora (1815) and Katmai (1912). The concentration of several cations and anions, including SO 4 2– and NO 3 , were measured using ion chromatography. We found that following those eruptions, the ratio of the concentration of NO 3 deposited during winter to that deposited during summer was significantly higher than during nonvolcanic periods. Although we cannot rule out that this pattern originates from snow pack effects, we propose that increased concentrations of volcanic H2SO4 particles in the stratosphere may have favored condensation and removal of HNO3 from the stratosphere during Arctic winter. In addition, this pattern might have been enhanced by slower formation of HNO3 during summer, caused by direct consumption of OH through oxidation of volcanic SO2.  相似文献

Four case studies are described, from a three-site field experiment in October/November 1991 using the Great Dun Fell flow-through reactor hill cap cloud in rural Northern England. Measurements of total odd-nitrogen nitrogen oxides (NO y ) made on either side of the hill, before and after the air flowed through the cloud, showed that 10 to 50% of the NO y , called NO z , was neither NO nor NO2. This NO z failed to exhibit a diurnal variation and was often higher after passage through cloud than before. No evidence of conversion of NO z to NO3 - in cloud was found. A simple box model of gas-phase chemistry in air before it reached the cloud, including scavenging of NO3 and N2O5 by aerosol of surface area proportional to the NO2 mixing ratio, shows that NO3 and N2O5 may build up in the boundary layer by night only if stable stratification insulates the air from emissions of NO. This may explain the lack of evidence for N2O5 forming NO3 - in cloud under well-mixed conditions in 1991, in contrast with observations under stably stratified conditions during previous experiments when evidence of N2O5 was found. Inside the cloud, some variations in the calculated total atmospheric loading of HNO2 and the cloud liquid water content were related to each other. Also, indications of conversion of NO x to NO z were found. To explain these observations, scavenging of NO x and HNO2 by cloud droplets and/or aqueous-phase oxidation of NO2 - by nitrate radicals are considered. When cloud acidity was being produced by aqueous-phase oxidation of NO x or SO2, NO3 - which had entered the cloud as aerosol particles was liberated as HNO3 vapour. When no aqueous-phase production of acidity was occurring, the reverse, conversion of scavenged HNO3 to particulate NO3 -, was observed.  相似文献

A series of nearly daily ozone vertical profiles obtained at station T-3 on Fletcher's Ice Island (85°N, 90°W) during the period January-March 1971 shows several significant ozone intrusions into the troposphere. These intrusions are not only associated with enhanced ozone amounts in the stratosphere but also require tropopause folding events to transport ozone into the troposphere. These folds in the Arctic tropopause appear to be capable of contributing significantly to the ozone budget of the Arctic troposphere during the late winter and spring seasons. The importance of tropopause folding for bringing ozone into the troposphere seen in the daily ozone profiles confirms the results found in the Arctic Gas and Aerosol Sampling Program aircraft flights.  相似文献

During two measuring campaigns in early spring 1994 and 1995 (March/April) and one campaign in summer 1994, measurements of ozone, PAN, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid, and particulate nitrate, sulfate, and ammonium (only 1995) were recorded in the Arctic. Observations were made by aircraft at various sites in the eastern and western Arctic. Ozone concentrations showed a steady increase with altitude both in spring and summer. During five flights in springtime, low ozone events (LOEs) could be observed near the surface and up to altitudes of 2000 m. SO2 background concentrations, ranging from detection limit (0.5 nmol/m3) to 5 nmol/m3, were observed during both spring and summer. Distinct maxima up to 55 nmol/m3 in lower altitudes were only obtained in springtime. Concentrations of the organic nitrate PAN were within a similar range as those of the inorganic nitrate HNO3 during spring campaigns. In contrast, concentrations of particulate nitrate were one half an order of magnitude lower. HNO3 concentrations increased significantly with altitude. Evidently, HNO3 was intruded from the stratosphere into the troposphere. Sulfate concentrations ranged between 5 and 30 nmol/m3; ammonium concentrations were obtained within a range from 10 to 50 nmol/m3.  相似文献

Time series for total aerosol mass and the concentrations of nineteen elements, and the mass particle-size distributions of the elements, were determined for samples collected from a site in the northern deserts of China -Zhenbeitai, one of ground sites of the Asia-Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia). Nine dust storm (DS) events were observed during the spring of 2001, lasting a combined total of twenty-six days. Peak mass loadings greatly exceeded the average (260 g m–3), and higher than average dust-element concentrations and wind speeds were also observed during the three-month study. Material balance calculations showed that 82% mass of the total aerosol particles could be ascribed to Asian dust, of which Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mn, Si and Ti accounted for 7%, 6%, 4%, 2%, 0.1%, 32% and 1% by weight, respectively. Modelcalculated dry deposition velocities for 7 dust-elements during dust storm periods averaged 17 cm s–1 and ranged from 14 to 21 cm s–1. The estimated dry depositiona of Asian dust for the spring of 2001 was 189 g m–2, of which 85% was due to dust storms. Factor analysis indicated that 89% of the dust loading during this period was due to remote or regional transport; 11% to local or background dust.  相似文献

An experimental technique for studying atmospheric heterogeneous reactions of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) on particle surfaces is reported. Particle bound organics were reacted in a 200 liter Teflon continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), with vapor phase oxidants. To provide a source of chemically stable particles for the CSTR, soot particles from a residential wood stove were first introduced during under darkness into a 25 m3 outdoor Teflon chamber. Air containing the particles was then added at a constant flow to the CSTR. The rates of heterogeneous reactions were obtained by comparing reacted particle samples with unreacted ones. The derivation of rate expressions for heterogeneous reactions in the CSTR is described. The use of the technique for a study of the nitration of selected soot particle bound PAH species by NO2 and HNO3 is demonstrated.  相似文献

In situ aircraft measurements of O3, CO,HNO3, and aerosol particles are presented, performed over the North Sea region in the summerlower stratosphere during the STREAM II campaign(Stratosphere Troposphere Experiments by AircraftMeasurements) in July 1994. Occasionally, high COconcentrations of 200-300 pbbv were measured in thelowermost stratosphere, together with relatively highHNO3 concentrations up to 1.6 ppbv. The particlenumber concentration (at standard pressure andtemperature) between 0.018-1 m decreased acrossthe tropopause, from >1000 cm-3 in the uppertroposphere to <500 cm-3 in the lowermoststratosphere. Since the CO sources are found in thetroposphere, the elevated CO mixing ratios areattributed to mixing of polluted tropospheric air intothe lowermost extratropical stratosphere. Further wehave used a chemical model to illustrate that nitrogenoxide reservoir species (mainly HNO3) determinethe availability of NOx (=NO + NO2) andtherefore largely control the total net O3production in the lower kilometers of thestratosphere. Model simulations, applying additionalNOx perturbations from aircraft, show that theO3 production efficiency of NOx is smallerthan previously assumed, under conditions withrelatively high HNO3 mixing ratios, as observedduring STREAM II. The model simulations furthersuggest a relatively high O3 productionefficiency from CO oxidation, as a result of therelatively high ambient HNO3 and NOxconcentrations, implying that upward transport of COrich air enhances O3 production in the lowermoststratosphere. Analysis of the measurements and themodel calculations suggest that the lowermoststratosphere is a transition region in which thechemistry deviates from both the upper troposphere andlower stratosphere.  相似文献

Results from measurements of the composition and size distribution of aerosol particles advected into central Alaska are reported. It is argued that the aerosol predominant in number, but not necessarily in mass, consists of submicron droplets of sulfuric acid. The major aerosol by mass in arctic air is a removal-resistant accumulation mode (radius 0.3 m) probably to large extent originating from pollution sources 103 km upstream (mostly in central Eurasia) from the site in Alaska. The accumulation mode aerosol disappears when arctic air masses are replaced with relatively warmer air masses flowing in from the northern Pacific. The latter air mass systems have been strongly scavenged by clouds and precipitation associated with the Aleutian low pressure system and with forced orographic uplifting over the Alaska Mountain Range; nevertheless the Pacific air masses contain substantial (i.e., 500–1000 cm-3) quantities of small (several hundredths of a micron in radius) particles. Arctic-derived air masses are enriched in large (i.e, 0.3 ) particles compared to Pacific Marine air masses, whereas the opposite trend is found for smaller, Aitken, particles. The smaller particles are found in greatest abundance in warmer air mass systems, presumably because of the relatively brief time since such air masses were last exposed to sunlight with attendant production of small particles from the gas phase.  相似文献

With the global Chemistry-Transport model MATCHsensitivity simulations were performed to determinethe degree to which especially upward transport ofgases from the earth's surface is limited byconvective and large-scale precipitation scavenging. When only dissolution of species in the liquid phaseis taken into account, mixing ratio reductions in themiddle and upper troposphere by 10% arecalculated for gases with a Henry's Law constant H of103 mol/l/atm. The removal increases to 50% forH = 104 mol/l/atm, and to 90% for H =105 mol/l/atm. We also consider scavenging by theice phase, which is generally much less efficient thanby the aqueous phase. In fact, rejection of gases fromfreezing water droplets may be a source of trace gasat higher altitudes.H2O2 and the strong acids (H2SO4,HNO3, HCl, HBr, HI) have such large solubilitiesthat they become largely removed by precipitation. When significant concentrations of these gases andsulfate aerosol exist above the liquid water domain ofthe atmosphere, they have likely been produced thereor at higher altitudes, although some could have comefrom trace gas rejection from ice particles or fromevaporating hydrometeors. Several other gases areaffected by precipitation, but not strongly enough toprevent fractional transfer to the middle and uppertroposphere: e.g., HNO4, HNO2 at pH 5,CH2O, the organic acids at pH 6,CH3SOCH3, HOCl, HOBr, and HOI. NH3 islargely removed by liquid phase scavenging at pH 7 and SO2 atpH 7. At pH less thanabout 6, upward transport of SO2 should largelydepend on the efficiency of oxidation processes in thewater droplets by O3 and H2O2.Most gases have solubilities which are too low forsignificant precipitation scavenging and aqueous phaseoxidation to occur. This holds, e.g., for O3, CO,the hydrocarbons, NO, NO2, HCN, CH3CN,CH3SCH3, CH3O2H, CH3CHOandhigher aldehydes, CH3OH and higher alcohols, peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN), CH3COCH3 andother ketones (note that some of these are not listedin Table I because their solubilities are below 10mol/l/atm). Especially for the short-lived gases, transfer from the boundary layer to the middle andupper troposphere is actually promoted by the enhancedupward transport that occurs in clouds.  相似文献

We present the first application of a multi-stage impactor to study volcanic particle emissions to the troposphere from Masaya volcano, Nicaragua. Concentrations of soluble SO4 2–,Cl, F, NO3 , K+, Na+,NH4 +, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were determined in 11 size bins from 0.07 m to >25.5 m. The near-source size distributions showed major modes at 0.5m (SO4 2–, H+,NH4 +); 0.2 m and 5.0 m (Cl) and 2.0–5.0 m(F). K+ and Na+ mirrored the SO4 2– size-resolvedconcentrations closely, suggesting that these were transported primarily asK2SO4 and Na2SO4 in acidic solution, while Mg2+ andCa2+ presented modes in both <1 m and >1 m particles. Changes in relative humidity were studied by comparing daytime (transparent plume) and night-time (condensed plume) results. Enhanced particle growth rates were observed in the night-time plume as well as preferential scavenging of soluble gases, such as HCl, by condensed water. Neutralisation of the acidic aerosol by background ammonia was observed at the crater rim and to a greater extent approximately 15 km downwind of the active crater. We report measurements of re-suspended near-source volcanic dust, which may form a component of the plume downwind. Elevated levels ofSO4 2–, Cl, F,H+, Na+, K+ and Mg2+ were observed around the 10 m particle diameter in this dust. The volcanic SO4 2– flux leaving the craterwas 0.07 kg s–1.  相似文献
