In the context of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological models, we have simulated images of the brightness temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky owing to the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (S–Z) effect in a cosmological distribution of clusters. We compare the image statistics with recent ATCA limits on arcmin-scale CMB anisotropy. The S–Z effect produces a generically non-Gaussian field and we compute the variance in the simulated temperature-anisotropy images, after convolution with the ATCA beam pattern, for different cosmological models. All the models are normalized to the 4-yr COBE data. We find an increase in the simulated-sky temperature variance with increase in the cosmological density parameter Ω0. A comparison with the upper limits on the sky variance set by the ATCA appears to rule out our closed-universe model: low-Ω0 open-universe models are preferred. The result is independent of any present day observations of σ 8.  相似文献

A key prediction of cosmological theories for the origin and evolution of structure in the Universe is the existence of a 'Doppler peak' in the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations. We present new results from a study of recent CMB observations which provide the first strong evidence for the existence of a 'Doppler peak' localized in both angular scale and amplitude. This first estimate of the angular position of the peak is used to place a new direct limit on the curvature of the Universe, corresponding to a density of Ω = 0.7+0.8−0.5, consistent with a flat universe. Very low-density 'open' universe models are inconsistent with this limit unless there is a significant contribution from a cosmological constant. For a flat standard cold dark matter dominated universe we use our results in conjunction with big bang nucleosynthesis constraints to determine the value of the Hubble constant as H 0 = 30 − 70 km s−1 Mpc−1 for baryon fractions Ωb = 0.05 to 0.2. For H 0 = 50 km s−1 Mpc−1 we find the primordial spectral index of the fluctuations to be n  = 1.1 ± 0.1, in close agreement with the inflationary prediction of n  ≃ 1.0.  相似文献

An interesting probe of the nature of dark energy is the measure of its sound speed, c s. We review the significance for constraining sound speed models of dark energy using large neutral hydrogen (H  i ) surveys with the square kilometre array (SKA). Our analysis considers the effect on the sound speed measurement that arises from the covariance of c s with the dark energy density, Ωde, and a time-varying equation of state,   w ( a ) = w 0+ (1 − a ) w a   . We find that the approximate degeneracy between dark energy parameters that arises in power spectrum observations is lifted through redshift tomography of the H  i -galaxy angular power spectrum, resulting in sound speed constraints that are not severely degraded. The cross-correlation of the galaxy and the integrated Sachs Wolfe (ISW) effect spectra contributes approximately 10 per cent of the information that is needed to distinguish variations in the dark energy parameters, and most of the discriminating signal comes from the galaxy auto-correlation spectrum. We also find that the sound speed constraints are weakly sensitive to the H  i bias model. These constraints do not improve substantially for a significantly deeper H  i survey since most of the clustering sensitivity to sound speed variations arises from   z ≲ 1.5  . A detection of models with sound speeds close to zero,   c s≲ 0.01,  is possible for dark energy models with   w ≳−0.9  .  相似文献

The fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are investigated for a hyperbolic universe with finite volume. Four-component models with radiation, matter, vacuum energy and an extra spatially constant dark energy X -component are considered. The general solution of the Friedmann equation for the cosmic scalefactor a ( η ) is given for the four-component models in terms of the Weierstrass ℘-function. The lower parts of the angular power spectra C l of the CMB anisotropy are computed for nearly flat models with Ωtot≤0.95. It is shown that the particular compact fundamental cell that is considered in this paper leads to a suppression in C l for l ≲10 and Ωtot≲0.9.  相似文献

We calculate analytically and numerically the distance–redshift equation in perfect fluid quintessence models and give an accurate fit to the numerical solutions for all the values of the density parameter and the quintessence equation of state. Then we apply our solutions to the estimation of H 0 from multiple image time delays and find that the inclusion of quintessence modifies significantly the likelihood distribution of H 0, generally reducing the best estimate with respect to a pure cosmological constant. Marginalizing over the other parameters (Ω m and the quintessence equation of state) we obtain H 0=71±6 km s−1 Mpc−1 for an empty beam and H 0=64±4 km s−1 Mpc−1 for a filled beam. These errors, however, do not take into account the uncertainty on the modelling of the lens. We also discuss the future prospects for distinguishing quintessence from a cosmological constant with time delays.  相似文献

We use a compilation of cosmic microwave anisotropy data to constrain the epoch of reionization in the Universe, as a function of cosmological parameters. We consider spatially flat cosmologies, varying the matter density Ω0 (the flatness being restored by a cosmological constant), the Hubble parameter h and the spectral index n of the primordial power spectrum. Our results are quoted both in terms of the maximum permitted optical depth to the last-scattering surface, and in terms of the highest allowed reionization redshift assuming instantaneous reionization. For critical-density models, significantly tilted power spectra are excluded as they cannot fit the current data for any amount of reionization, and even scale-invariant models must have an optical depth to last scattering of below 0.3. For the currently favoured low-density model with Ω0=0.3 and a cosmological constant, the earliest reionization permitted to occur is at around redshift 35, which roughly coincides with the highest estimate in the literature. We provide general fitting functions for the maximum permitted optical depth, as a function of cosmological parameters. We do not consider the inclusion of tensor perturbations, but if present they would strengthen the upper limits that we quote.  相似文献

We explore the prospects for using future supernova observations to probe the dark energy. We focus on quintessence, an evolving scalar field that has been suggested as a candidate for the dark energy. After simulating the observations that would be expected from the proposed SuperNova / Acceleration Probe satellite ( SNAP ), we investigate two methods for extracting information concerning quintessence from such data. First, by expanding the quintessence equation of state as   w Q ( z ) = w Q (0) −α ln(1 + z )  , to fit the data, it is possible to reconstruct the quintessence potential for a wide range of smoothly varying potentials. Secondly, it will be possible to test the basic properties of the dark energy by constraining the parameters  Ω Q , w Q   and α. We show that it may be possible, for example, to distinguish between quintessence and the cosmological constant in this way. Furthermore, when supernova data are combined with other planned cosmological observations, the precision of reconstructions and parameter constraints is significantly improved, allowing a wider range of dark energy models to be distinguished.  相似文献

The number density of rich galaxy clusters still provides the most robust way of normalizing the power spectrum of dark matter perturbations on scales relevant to large-scale structure. We revisit this constraint in the light of several recent developments: (1) the availability of well-defined samples of local clusters with relatively accurate X-ray temperatures; (2) new theoretical mass functions for dark matter haloes, which provide a good fit to large numerical simulations; (3) more accurate mass–temperature relations from larger catalogues of hydrodynamical simulations; (4) the requirement to consider closed as well as open and flat cosmologies to obtain full multiparameter likelihood constraints for CMB and SNe studies. We present a new sample of clusters drawn from the literature and use this sample to obtain improved results on σ 8, the normalization of the matter power spectrum on scales of 8  h −1 Mpc, as a function of the matter density and cosmological constant in a universe with general curvature. We discuss our differences with previous work, and the remaining major sources of uncertainty. Final results on the normalization, approximately independent of power spectrum shape, can be expressed as constraints on σ at an appropriate cluster normalization scale R Cl. We provide fitting formulas for R Cl and σ ( R Cl) for general cosmologies, as well as for σ 8 as a function of cosmology and shape parameter Γ. For flat models we find approximately σ 8≃(0.495−0.037+0.034M−0.60 for Γ=0.23, where the error bar is dominated by uncertainty in the mass–temperature relation.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the effects of perturbations in a dark energy component with a constant equation of state on large-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. The inclusion of perturbations increases the large-scale power. We investigate more speculative dark energy models with   w < −1  and find the opposite behaviour. Overall the inclusion of perturbations in the dark energy component increases the degeneracies. We generalize the parametrization of the dark energy fluctuations to allow for an arbitrary constant sound speed, and we show how constraints from CMB experiments change if this is included. Combining CMB with large-scale structure, Hubble parameter and supernovae observations we obtain   w =−1.02 ± 0.16 (1σ)  as a constraint on the equation of state, which is almost independent of the sound speed chosen. With the presented analysis we find no significant constraint on the constant speed of sound of the dark energy component.  相似文献

The effect of a non-trivial topology on the temperature correlations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in a small compact hyperbolic universe with volume comparable to the cube of the curvature radius is investigated. Because the bulk of large-angle CMB fluctuations are produced at the late epoch in low-Ω0 models, the effect of a long-wavelength cut-off owing to the periodic structure does not lead to significant suppression of large-angle power as in compact flat models. The angular power spectra are consistent with COBE data for Ω00.1.  相似文献

We analyse the spatial clustering properties of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) 1 Bright Sample, an X-ray flux-limited catalogue of galaxy clusters selected from the southern part of the survey. The two-point correlation function ( r ) of the whole sample is well fitted (in an Einsteinde Sitter model) by the power law =( r r 0) , with and (95.4 per cent confidence level with one fitting parameter). We use the RASS 1 Bright Sample as a first application of a theoretical model that aims to predict the clustering properties of X-ray clusters in flux-limited surveys for different cosmological scenarios. The model uses the theoretical and empirical relations between mass, temperature and X-ray cluster luminosity, and fully accounts for the redshift evolution of the underlying dark matter clustering and cluster bias factor. The comparison between observational results and theoretical predictions shows that the Einsteinde Sitter models display too low a correlation length, while models with a matter density parameter 0m=0.3 (with or without a cosmological constant) are successful in reproducing the observed clustering. The dependence of the correlation length r 0 on the X-ray limiting flux and luminosity of the sample is generally consistent with the predictions of all our models. Quantitative agreement is however only reached for 0m=0.3 models. The model presented here can be reliably applied to future deeper X-ray cluster surveys: the study of the clustering properties will provide a useful complementary tool to the traditional cluster abundance analyses used to constrain the cosmological parameters.  相似文献

A principal-component analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements is used to investigate degeneracies among cosmological parameters. The results show that a degeneracy with tensor modes – the 'tensor degeneracy'– dominates uncertainties in estimates of the baryon and cold dark matter densities,   ω bb  h 2  ,   ω cc  h 2  , 1 from an analysis of CMB anisotropies alone. The principal-component analysis agrees well with a maximum-likelihood analysis of the observations, identifying the main degeneracy directions and providing an impression of the effective dimensionality of the parameter space.  相似文献

Using the ray-bundle method for calculating gravitational lens magnifications, we outline a method by which the magnification probability may be determined specifically in the weak lensing limit for cosmological models obtained from N -body simulations.
16 different models are investigated, which are variations on three broad classes of cold dark matter model: the standard model with  (Ω0, λ 0)=(1.0,0.0)  , the open model with  (Ω0, λ 0)=(0.3,0.0)  and the lambda model, which is a flat model with a cosmological constant  (Ω0, λ 0)=(0.3,0.7)  .
The effects of varying the Hubble parameter, H 0, the power spectrum shape parameter, Γ, and the cluster mass normalization, σ 8, are studied. It is shown that there is no signature of these parameters in the weak lensing magnification distributions. The magnification probability distributions are also shown to be independent of the numerical parameters such as the lens mass and simulation box size in the N -body simulations.  相似文献

We study modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) as a candidate for dark energy and predict the values of parameters of the gas for a physically viable cosmological model. The equation of state of MCG     involves three parameters: B , A and α. The permitted values of these parameters are determined with the help of a dimensionless age parameter  ( H 0 t 0)  and   H ( z ) − z   data. Specifically, we study the allowed ranges of values of the B parameter in terms of α and   As   (   As   is defined in terms of the parameters in the theory). We explore the constraints of the parameters in the cold dark matter and unified dark matter energy models, respectively.  相似文献

The locations of the peaks of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectrum are sensitive indicators of cosmological parameters, yet there is no known analytic formula which accurately describes their dependence on them. We parametrize the location of the peaks as   l m = l A( m - φ m )  , where l A is the analytically calculable acoustic scale and m labels the peak number. Fitting formulae for the phase shifts φ m for the first three peaks and the first trough are given. It is shown that in a wide range of parameter space, the acoustic scale l A can be retrieved from actual CMB measurements of the first three peaks within 1 per cent accuracy. This can be used to speed up likelihood analysis. We describe how the peak shifts can be used to distinguish between different models of dark energy.  相似文献

In this paper, I investigate the family of mixed three-point correlation functions  〈τ q γ3− q 〉, q = 0, 1, 2  , between the integrated Sachs–Wolfe (iSW) temperature perturbation τ and the galaxy overdensity γ as a tool for detecting the gravitational interaction of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons with the potentials of non-linearly evolving cosmological structures. Both the iSW-effect and the galaxy overdensity are derived in hyperextended perturbation theory to second order and I emphasize the different parameter sensitivities of the linear and non-linear iSW-effect. I examine the configuration dependence of the relevant bispectra, quantify their sensitivities and discuss their degeneracies with respect to the cosmological parameters  Ωm, σ8, h   and the dark energy equation of state parameter w . I give detection significances for combining Planck CMB data and galaxy sample of a survey like Dark UNiverse Explorer (DUNE) by using a quadratic approximation for the likelihood with Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) as the fiducial cosmology: the combination of Planck with DUNE should be able to reach a cumulative signal-to-noise ratio of ≃0.6 for the bispectrum  〈τγ2〉  up to ℓ= 2000, which is too weak to be detected. The most important noise source is the primary CMB fluctuations as the Poisson noise in the galaxy number density is almost negligible for a survey like DUNE.  相似文献

A new method arising from a gauge-theoretic approach to general relativity is applied to the formation of clusters in an expanding universe. The three cosmological models (0=1, =0), (0=0.3, =0.7) and (0=0.3, =0) are considered, which extends our application in two previous papers. A simple initial velocity and density perturbation of finite extent is imposed at the epoch z =1000, and we investigate the subsequent evolution of the density and velocity fields for clusters observed at redshifts z =1, z =2 and z =3. Photon geodesics and redshifts are also calculated so that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies arising from collapsing clusters can be estimated. We find that the central CMB temperature decrement is slightly stronger and extends to larger angular scales in the non-zero case. This effect is strongly enhanced in the open case. Gravitational lensing effects are also considered, and we apply our model to the reported microwave decrement observed towards the quasar pair PC 1643+4631 A&B.  相似文献

We measure the matter power spectrum from 31 Lyα spectra spanning the redshift range of 1.6–3.6. The optical depth, τ, for Lyα absorption of the intergalactic medium is obtained from the flux using the inversion method of Nusser & Haehnelt. The optical depth is converted to density by using a simple power-law relation,  τ∝ (1 +δ)α  . The non-linear 1D power spectrum of the gas density is then inferred with a method that makes simultaneous use of the one- and two-point statistics of the flux and compared against theoretical models with a likelihood analysis. A cold dark matter model with standard cosmological parameters fits the data well. The power-spectrum amplitude is measured to be (assuming a flat Universe),  σ8= (0.92 ± 0.09) × (Ωm/0.3)−0.3  , with α varying in the range of 1.56–1.8 with redshift. Enforcing the same cosmological parameters in all four redshift bins, the likelihood analysis suggests some evolution in the temperature–density relation and the thermal smoothing length of the gas. The inferred evolution is consistent with that expected if reionization of He  ii occurred at   z ∼ 3.2  . A joint analysis with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe results together with a prior on the Hubble constant as suggested by the Hubble Space Telescope key project data, yields values of Ωm and σ8 that are consistent with the cosmological concordance model. We also perform a further inversion to obtain the linear 3D power spectrum of the matter density fluctuations.  相似文献

In this paper we have extended the entropy-driven model of cluster evolution developed by Bower in order to be able to predict the evolution of galaxy clusters for a range of cosmological scenarios. We have applied this model to recent measurements of the evolution of the L x− T normalization and X-ray luminosity function in order to place constraints on cosmological parameters. We find that these measurements alone do not select a particular cosmological framework. An additional constraint is required on the effective slope of the power spectrum to break the degeneracy that exists between this and the background cosmology. We therefore include a theoretical calculation of the Ω0 dependence on the power spectrum, based on the cold dark matter paradigm, which infers Ω0<0.55 (0.1<Ω0<0.7 for Ω00=1), at the 95 per cent confidence level. Alternatively, an independent measurement of the slope of the power spectrum from galaxy clustering requires Ω0<0.6 (Ω0<0.65 for Ω00=1), again to 95 per cent confidence. The rate of entropy evolution is insensitive to the values of Ω0 considered, although it is sensitive to changes in the distribution of the intracluster medium.  相似文献

We implement the theory of resonant scattering in the context of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization anisotropies. We compute the changes in the E-mode polarization (EE) and temperature E-mode (TE) CMB power spectra introduced by the scattering on a resonant transition with a given optical depth τX and polarization coefficient E 1. The latter parameter, accounting for how anisotropic the scattering is, depends on the exchange of angular momentum in the transition, enabling observational discrimination between different resonances. We use this formalism in two different scenarios: cosmological recombination and cosmological re-ionization. In the context of cosmological recombination, we compute predictions in frequency and multipole space for the change in the TE and EE power spectra introduced by scattering on the Hα and Pα lines of hydrogen. This constitutes a fundamental test of the standard model of recombination, and the sensitivity it requires is comparable to that needed in measuring the primordial CMB B-mode polarization component. In the context of re-ionization, we study the scattering off metals and ions produced by the first stars, and find that polarization anisotropies, apart from providing a consistency test for intensity measurements, give some insight on how re-ionization evolved. Since polarization anisotropies have memory of how anisotropic the line scattering is, they should be able to discern the O  i 63.2-μm transition from other possible transitions associated to O  iii , N  ii , N  iii , etc. The amplitude of these signals are, however, between 10 and 100 times below the (already challenging) level of CMB B-mode polarization anisotropies.  相似文献
