The equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of a coronal loop embedded in a stratified isothermal atmosphere are investigated. The shape of the loop is determined by a balance between magnetic tension, buoyancy, and external pressure gradients. The footpoints of the loop are anchored in the photosphere; if they are moved too far apart, no equilibrium is possible and the loop erupts upwards. This critical separation is independent of the pressure differential between the loop and the external medium if the loop has enhanced magnetic field, but varies if instead the loop pressure is increased. The maximum width is proportional to the larger of the gravitational scale-height and the length-scale of the ambient field. In some circumstances, it is shown that multiple solutions exist for the tube path. These results may be relevant to the eruption of prominences during the preflare phase of two-ribbon flares and to the onset of coronal loop transients. Such eruptions may occur if the footpoint separation, internal pressure or internal magnetic field are too great.  相似文献

The equilibrium shape of a slender flux tube in the stratified solar atmosphere is studied. The path is determined by a balance between the downwards magnetic tension, which depends on the curvature of the loop, and the upwards buoyancy force. Previous results for untwisted slender tubes are extended to include twisted tubes embedded in an external magnetic field. The path of an untwisted tube in an atmosphere with an ambient magnetic field is calculated. For a given footpoint separation, the height of the tube is lowered by increasing the strength of the external magnetic field. If the footpoints are slowly moved apart, the tube rises, until a threshold separation is reached beyond which there is no possible equilibrium height. This threshold width does not depend on the strength of the external field. The effects of twisting up a curved loop are studied, using an extension of results obtained for slender curved tubes with a straight axis. It is shown that for a twisted tube of given width, there can be two possible values of the equilibrium height. If, however, the tube is twisted more than a certain amount or if the footpoints are too widely separated there is no equilibrium. The critical footpoint separation for non-equilibrium is smaller for a twisted tube that an untwisted one.Twisting a tube or moving its feet apart is thus likely to result in non-equilibrium, causing the tube to rise indefinitely under the influence of the unbalanced buoyant force. It is suggested that this phenomenon could be important in the preflare stage of a large two-ribbon solar flare, by causing the initial slow rise of an active region filament. As well as being involved in the onset of an erupting prominence, this non-equilibrium may also be relevant to the formation of coronal loop transients.  相似文献

The problem of the effect of a strongly magnetic star on a surrounding accretion disc is considered. For stellar rotation periods greater than a critical value, a numerical solution is found for a steady disc with turbulent magnetic diffusion, including electron scattering opacity and radiation pressure. Inside the corotation radius, the extraction of disc angular momentum by magnetic coupling to the star becomes strong and this leads to enhanced viscous stress and dissipation. The resulting elevated temperature causes electron scattering opacity and radiation pressure to become significant further from the star than in the absence of its magnetic field. The disc ends as its height increases rapidly due to the large central pressure, its density decreases and magnetically induced viscous instability occurs.  相似文献

An upper limit for the mass loss rate of rapidly rotating main-sequence O9-B4 stars has been determined. Themaximum mass loss rate of a rotating star is determined by the ability of radiation pressure in lines to remove matter from the gravitational potential well of the star. The maximum mass loss rate in the case of extremely rapid stellar rotation is a factor of 3–7 higher than that in the case of a nonrotating star. A simple formula for determining the ratio of the maximum mass loss rate of a rotating star to the maximum mass loss rate of a nonrotating star with the same mass, luminosity, and volume is suggested.  相似文献

In this paper we extend the theory of close encounters of a giant planet on a parabolic orbit with a central star developed in our previous work (Ivanov and Papaloizou in MNRAS 347:437, 2004; MNRAS 376:682, 2007) to include the effects of tides induced on the central star. Stellar rotation and orbits with arbitrary inclination to the stellar rotation axis are considered. We obtain results both from an analytic treatment that incorporates first order corrections to normal mode frequencies arising from stellar rotation and numerical treatments that are in satisfactory agreement over the parameter space of interest. These results are applied to the initial phase of the tidal circularisation problem. We find that both tides induced in the star and planet can lead to a significant decrease of the orbital semi-major axis for orbits having periastron distances smaller than 5?C6 stellar radii with tides in the star being much stronger for retrograde orbits compared to prograde orbits. Assuming that combined action of dynamic and quasi-static tides could lead to the total circularisation of orbits this corresponds to observed periods up to 4?C5 days. We use the simple Skumanich law to characterise the rotational history of the star supposing that the star has its rotational period equal to one month at the age of 5 Gyr. The strength of tidal interactions is characterised by circularisation time scale, t ev , which is defined as a typical time scale of evolution of the planet??s semi-major axis due to tides. This is considered as a function of orbital period P obs , which the planet obtains after the process of tidal circularisation has been completed. We find that the ratio of the initial circularisation time scales corresponding to prograde and retrograde orbits, respectively, is of order 1.5?C2 for a planet of one Jupiter mass having P obs ~ 4 days. The ratio grows with the mass of the planet, being of order five for a five Jupiter mass planet with the same P orb . Note, however, this result might change for more realistic stellar rotation histories. Thus, the effect of stellar rotation may provide a bias in the formation of planetary systems having planets on close orbits around their host stars, as a consequence of planet?Cplanet scattering, which favours systems with retrograde orbits. The results reported in the paper may also be applied to the problem of tidal capture of stars in young stellar clusters.  相似文献

We investigate the HD 182255, a star earlier suspected to be helium-weak. We show it to be a SiHe-w-type CP object. Our study revealed four regions with anomalous elemental abundances on the stellar surface near the equator of rotation. Its magnetic field could not be measured, apparently due to the unfavorable orientation of the star. The star is seen almost (rotation) pole on, the inclination of its rotation axis is i = 12°. The magnitude of HD 182255 varies as a result of its rotation owing to the nonuniform distribution of chemical elements on its surface, which leads to the variable blanketing effect. The helium and silicon abundances increase with depth, i.e., the stratification typical of CP stars is observed. The star undergoes nonradial pulsations and nonstationary variations of the structure of its upper atmosphere.  相似文献

Equations of thermal equilibrium along coronal loops are solved in the absence of gravity but where the cross-sectional area changes along the loop. The footpoint temperature is assumed to be 2 × 104 K. Several fundamental types of solution are found, namely hot loops, cool loops, hot-cool loops (where the footpoints and summits are cool but the intermediate parts are hotter) and warm loops (cool along most of their lengths except the summits). On increasing the cross-sectional area the summit temperature generally increases slightly except for warm loops where no increase in temperature is recorded and hot-cool loops where a dramatic increase in summit temperature may occur. The cool and hot-cool loops may model elementary fibril structures within prominences.  相似文献

We develop equations and obtain solutions for the structure and evolution of a protodisc region that is initially formed with no radial motion and super-Keplerian rotation speed when wind material from a hot rotating star is channelled towards its equatorial plane by a dipole-type magnetic field. Its temperature is around 107 K because of shock heating and the inflow of wind material causes its equatorial density to increase with time. The centrifugal force and thermal pressure increase relative to the magnetic force and material escapes at its outer edge. The protodisc region of a uniformly rotating star has almost uniform rotation and will shrink radially unless some instability intervenes. In a star with angular velocity increasing along its surface towards the equator, the angular velocity of the protodisc region decreases radially outwards and magnetorotational instability (MRI) can occur within a few hours or days. Viscosity resulting from MRI will readjust the angular velocity distribution of the protodisc material and may assist in the formation of a quasi-steady disc. Thus, the centrifugal breakout found in numerical simulations for uniformly rotating stars does not imply that quasi-steady discs with slow outflow cannot form around magnetic rotator stars with solar-type differential rotation.  相似文献

Equations of thermal equilibrium along coronal loops with footpoint temperatures of 2 × 104 K are solved. Three fundamentally different categories of solution are found, namely hot loops with summit temperatures above about 4 × 105 K, cool loops which are cooler than 8 × 104 K along their whole length and hot-cool loops which have summit temperatures around 2 × 104 K but much hotter parts at intermediate points between the summit and the footpoints. Hot loops correspond to the hot corona of the Sun. The cool loops are of relevance for fibrils, for the cool cores observed by Foukal and also for active-region prominences where the magnetic field is directed mainly along the prominence. Quiescent prominences consist of many cool threads inclined to the prominence axis, and each thread may be modelled as a hot-cool loop. In addition, it is possible for warm loops at intermediate summit temperatures (8 × 104K to 4 × 105 K) to exist, but the observed differential emission measure suggests that most of the plasma in the solar atmosphere is in either the hot phase or the cool phase. Thermal catastrophe may occur when the length or pressure of a loop is so small that the hot solution ceases to exist and there are only cool loop solutions. Many loops can be superimposed to form a coronal arcade which contains loops of several different types.  相似文献

The loss of equilibrium in coronal magnetic field structures is a possible source of energy for coronal heating and solar flares. We investigate whether such a loss of equilibrium occurs when a coronal loop is progressively twisted by photospheric motions. In studies of 2-D cylindrical equilibria, long loops have been found to be of constant cross-sectional area along most of their length, with axial variations being confined to narrow boundary layers. We use this information to develop a 1-D line-tied model, for a 2-D coronal loop. We specify the twist in terms of the azimuthal field and more physically, in terms of the photospheric footpoint displacement. In the former case we find a loss of equilibrium, but not in the latter. We also examine a twisted loop with a non-zero plasma pressure. The loss of equilibrium is only found at high-plasma . It is conjectured that such high- can occur in flare loops and prior to a prominence eruption. However, when the plasma evolves adiabatically, there is no loss of equilibrium.  相似文献

We reassess the applicability of the Toomre criterion in galactic discs and we study the local star formation law in 16 disc galaxies for which abundance gradients are published. The data we use consist of stellar light profiles, atomic and molecular gas (deduced from CO with a metallicity-dependent conversion factor), star formation rates (from Hα emissivities), metallicities, dispersion velocities and rotation curves. We show that the Toomre criterion applies successfully to the case of the Milky Way disc, but it has limited success with the data of our sample; depending on whether or not the stellar component is included in the stability analysis, we find average values for the threshold ratio of the gas surface density to the critical surface density in the range 0.5–0.7. We also test various star formation laws proposed in the literature, i.e. either the simple Schmidt law or modifications of it, that take into account dynamical factors. We find only small differences among them as far as the overall fit to our data is concerned; in particular, we find that all three star formation laws (with parameters derived from the fits to our data) match observations in the Milky Way disc particularly well. In all cases we find that the exponent n of our best-fitting star formation rate has slightly higher values than in other recent works and we suggest several reasons that may cause that discrepancy.  相似文献

We calculate the disc and boundary layer luminosities for accreting rapidly rotating neutron stars with low magnetic fields in a fully general relativistic manner. Rotation increases the disc luminosity and decreases the boundary layer luminosity. A rapid rotation of the neutron star substantially modifies these quantities as compared with the static limit. For a neutron star rotating close to the centrifugal mass shed limit, the total luminosity has contribution only from the extended disc. For such maximal rotation rates, we find that well before the maximum stable gravitational mass configuration is reached, there exists a limiting central density, for which particles in the innermost stable orbit will be more tightly bound than those at the surface of the neutron star. We also calculate the angular velocity profiles of particles in Keplerian orbits around the rapidly rotating neutron star. The results are illustrated for a representative set of equation of state models of neutron star matter.  相似文献

We show that the rotation of coronal holes can be understood in terms of a current-free model of the coronal magnetic field, in which holes are the footpoint locations of open field lines. The coronal field is determined as a function of time by matching its radial component to the photospheric flux distribution, whose evolution is simulated including differential rotation, supergranular diffusion, and meridional flow. We find that ongoing field-line reconnection allows the holes to rotate quasi-rigidly with their outer-coronal extensions, until their boundaries become constrained by the neutral line of the photospheric field as it winds up to form stripes of alternating magnetic polarity. This wind-up may be significantly retarded by a strong axisymmetric field component which forces the neutral line to low latitudes; it is also gradually halted by the cross-latitudinal transport of flux via supergranular diffusion and a poleward bulk flow. We conclude that a strong axisymmetric field component is responsible for the prolonged rigid rotation of large meridional holes during the declining phase of the sunspot cycle, but that diffusion and flow determine the less rigid rotation observed near sunspot maximum, when the holes corotate with their confining polarity stripes.  相似文献

We present the first maps of the surface magnetic fields of a pre-main-sequence binary system. Spectropolarimetric observations of the young, 18 Myr, HD 155555 (V824 Ara, G5IV+K0IV) system were obtained at the Anglo-Australian Telescope in 2004 and 2007. Both data sets are analysed using a new binary Zeeman–Doppler imaging (ZDI) code. This allows us to simultaneously model the contribution of each component to the observed circularly polarized spectra. Stellar brightness maps are also produced for HD 155555 and compared to previous Doppler images.
Our radial magnetic maps reveal a complex surface magnetic topology with mixed polarities at all latitudes. We find rings of azimuthal field on both stars, most of which are found to be non-axisymmetric with the stellar rotational axis. We also examine the field strength and the relative fraction of magnetic energy stored in the radial and azimuthal field components at both epochs. A marked weakening of the field strength of the secondary star is observed between the 2004 and 2007 epochs. This is accompanied by an apparent shift in the location of magnetic energy from the azimuthal to radial field. We suggest that this could be indicative of a magnetic activity cycle. We use the radial magnetic maps to extrapolate the coronal field (by assuming a potential field) for each star individually – at present ignoring any possible interaction. The secondary star is found to exhibit an extreme tilt (≈75°) of its large-scale magnetic field to that of its rotation axis for both epochs. The field complexity that is apparent in the surface maps persists out to a significant fraction of the binary separation. Any interaction between the fields of the two stars is therefore likely to be complex also. Modelling this would require a full binary field extrapolation.  相似文献

The magnetostatic equilibrium of a coronal loop in response to slow twisting of the photospheric footpoints is investigated. A numerical code is used to solve the full non-linear 2-D axisymmetric problem, extending earlier linearised models which assume weak twist and large aspect ratio. It is found that often the core of the loop tends to contract into a region of strong longitudinal field while the outer part expands. It is shown that, away from the photospheric footpoints, the equilibrium is very well approximated by a straight 1-D cylindrical model. This idea is used to develop a simple method for prescribing the footpoint angular displacement and calculating the equilibrium.  相似文献

We derive the constraints on the mass ratio for a binary system to merge in a violent process. We find that the secondary-to-primary stellar mass ratio should be  0.003 ≲ ( M 2/ M 1) ≲ 0.15  . A more massive secondary star will keep the primary stellar envelope in synchronized rotation with the orbital motion until merger occurs. This implies a very small relative velocity between the secondary star and the primary stellar envelope at the moment of merger, and therefore very weak shock waves, and low-flash luminosity. A too low-mass secondary will release small amount of energy, and will expel small amount of mass, which is unable to form an inflated envelope. It can, however, produce a quite luminous but short flash when colliding with a low-mass main-sequence star.
Violent and luminous mergers, which we term mergebursts, can be observed as V838 Monocerotis-type events, where a star undergoes a fast brightening lasting days to months, with a peak luminosity of up to  ∼106 L  followed by a slow decline at very low effective temperatures.  相似文献

We model the magnetic fields of four magnetic stars using published longitudinal (Be) field measurements. The structure of the magnetic field of each of the four stars is close to that of the central dipole. Unfortunately, the number of measurements for each star is insufficient for accurate finding of the field parameters, and therefore we find no dipole shift exceeding its error Δa ≈ 0.1, expressed as a fraction of the stellar radius. Our data support the opinion that the results of modeling depend most strongly on the adopted inclination of the star’s rotation axis i.  相似文献

We investigate the formation of binary stellar systems. We consider a model where a 'seed' protobinary system forms, via fragmentation, within a collapsing molecular cloud core and evolves to its final mass by accreting material from an infalling gaseous envelope. This accretion alters the mass ratio and orbit of the binary, and is largely responsible for forming the circumstellar and/or circumbinary discs.
Given this model for binary formation, we predict the properties of binary systems and how they depend on the initial conditions within the molecular cloud core. We predict that there should be a continuous trend such that closer binaries are more likely to have equal-mass components and are more likely to have circumbinary discs than wider systems. Comparing our results with observations, we find that the observed mass-ratio distributions of binaries and the frequency of circumbinary discs as a function of separation are most easily reproduced if the progenitor molecular cloud cores have radial density profiles between uniform and 1/ r (e.g., Gaussian) with near-uniform rotation. This is in good agreement with the observed properties of pre-stellar cores. Conversely, we find that the observed properties of binaries cannot be reproduced if the cloud cores are in solid-body rotation and have initial density profiles which are strongly centrally condensed. Finally, in agreement with the radial-velocity searches for extrasolar planets, we find that it is very difficult to form a brown dwarf companion to a solar-type star with a separation ≲10 au, but that the frequency of brown dwarf companions should increase with larger separations or lower mass primaries.  相似文献
