By combining data from cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments (including the recent WMAP third year results), large scale structure (LSS) and Lyman-α forest observations, we derive upper limits on the sum of neutrino masses of Σmν < 0.17 eV at 95% c.l. We then constrain the hypothesis of a fourth, sterile, massive neutrino. For the third massless +1 massive neutrino case we bound the mass of the sterile neutrino to ms < 0.26 eV at 95% c.l. These results exclude at high significance the sterile neutrino hypothesis as an explanation of the LSND anomaly. We then generalize the analysis to account for active neutrino masses which tightens the limit to ms < 0.23 eV and the possibility that the sterile abundance is not thermal. In the latter case, the constraints in the (mass, density) plane are non-trivial. For a mass of >1 eV or <0.05 eV the cosmological energy density in sterile neutrinos is always constrained to be ων < 0.003 at 95% c.l. However, for a sterile neutrino mass of 0.25 eV, ων can be as large as 0.01.  相似文献

We present the cosmological parameters constraints obtained from the combination of galaxy cluster mass function measurements (Vikhlinin et al. 2009a, 2009b) with new cosmological data obtained during last three years: updated measurements of cosmic microwave background anisotropy with Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observatory, and at smaller angular scales with South Pole Telescope (SPT), new Hubble constant measurements, baryon acoustic oscillations and supernovae Type Ia observations. New constraints on total neutrino mass ??m ?? and effective number of neutrino species are obtained. In models with free number of massive neutrinos the constraints on these parameters are notably less strong, and all considered cosmological data are consistent with non-zero total neutrino mass ??m ?? ?? 0.4 eV and larger than standard effective number of neutrino species, N eff ?? 4. These constraints are compared to the results of neutrino oscillations searches at short baselines. The updated dark energy equation of state parameter constraints are presented. We show that taking in account systematic uncertanties, current cluster mass funstion data provide similarly powerful constraints on dark energy equation of state, as compared to the constraints from supernovae Type Ia observations.  相似文献

The properties of the neutrino burst generated by massive 1.5–2M collapsing stellar iron-oxygen cores are discussed. Special attention is given to the neutrino heat conductivity theory which allows us to calculate the transport of neutrinos through the collapsing stellar core up to the formation and during the first seconds of cooling of a hot hydrostatic neutron star. The theoretical predictions seem to be in good agreement with both the KAMIOKANDE II and IMB data on the neutrino burst detected from SN 1987A. The most reliable constraint on the neutrino rest mass is shown to bem v <20–30eV, while the safest upper limit on the neutrino magnetic moment, µ v < 10–11 Bohr magnetons, results rather from the cooling of white dwarfs than from the SN 1987A neutrino data.Presented to the 13th International Conference Neutrino-88, Boston, U.S.A., 5–11 June, 1988.  相似文献

In this paper, the neutrino mass has been determined from SN1987a observation in a manner that the simultaneity of neutrino emission is not regarded as the starting point, but is itself defined through the analysis by Monte-Carlo simulation. The result is that the neutrino mass lies in 3–4 eV, possiblym v 3.6 eV. Neutrino luminosity variation and neutrino spectrum are also obtained. Comparison with theories gives further support to the mass determination, and also predicts the mass of progenitor star of SN1987a to be in the range of 12–25M .The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

The constraints on total neutrino mass and effective number of neutrino species based on CMB anisotropy power spectrum, Hubble constant, baryon acoustic oscillations and galaxy cluster mass function data are presented. It is shown that discrepancies between various cosmological data in Hubble constant and density fluctuation amplitude, measured in standard ΛCDM cosmological model, can be eliminated if more than standard effective number of neutrino species and non-zero total neutrino mass are considered. This extension of ΛCDM model appears to be ≈3σ significant when all cosmological data are used. The model with approximately one additional neutrino type, N eff ≈ 4, and with non-zero total neutrino mass, Σ ≈ 0.5 eV, provide the best fit to the data. In the model with only one massive neutrino the upper limits on neutrino mass are slightly relaxed. It is shown that these deviations from ΛCDM model appearmainly due to the usage of recent data on the observations of baryon acoustic oscillations. The larger than standard number of neutrino species is measured mainly due to the comparison of the BAO data with direct measurements of Hubble constant, which was already noticed earlier. As it is shown below, the data on galaxy cluster mass function in this case give the measurement of non-zero neutrino mass.  相似文献

The dynamical masses of dwarf-spheroidals, spiral and elliptical galaxies, dwarf irregular binaries, groups of galaxies and clusters are shown to lie in a band about the M ∼ ρR3 line. The value of ρ is approximately the same as that estimated for unseen matter in the solar neighbourhood. The clusters themselves lie about theM ∼ R -3 line derived for a self-gravitating neutrino gas; their masses are distributed around the maximum Jeans-mass, MJmax. corresponding to mv - 10 eV in an expanding universe. The present day length scales of clusters and the dispersion in the velocities observed within them are understood in terms of a 100-fold expansion subsequent to the initial growth of the fluctuations at MJmax. These systematics on theR-M plane imply that the initial condensations in the expanding universe are on the scale of the rich clusters of galaxies, these condensations were triggered dominantly by the gravitation of the neutrinos and the constant density of al systems arises naturally due to the embedding of these systems in the large scale neutrino condensations. If the neutrino density falls off asr -2 beyond the cluster edge till the distributions from different clusters overlap, then the mean density of the neutrinos approximately equals the closure density of the universe.  相似文献

We investigate the role of the cosmological constant in the formation of neutrino halos. Using the observational limit 10–55 cm–2 we find that it is relevant only for neutrinos of very light rest-mass: namely, 10–1 eV.On leave of absence from Department of Physics, College of Mines, Ostrava, Czechoslovakia.  相似文献

The neutrinos from the Big Bang or the Cosmic Neutrino Background (CNB) carry precious information from the early epoch when our universe was only 1 s old. Although not yet directly detected, CNB may be revealed indirectly through cosmological observations due to neutrino important cosmological influence. We review the cosmological role of neutrinos and the cosmological constraints on neutrino characteristics. Namely, we discuss the impact of neutrinos in the early universe: the cosmic expansion, neutrino decoupling, the role of neutrinos in the primordial production of light elements, leptogenesis, etc. We briefly discuss the role of neutrino at later stages of the universe.Due to the considerable cosmological influence of neutrinos, cosmological bounds on neutrino properties from observational data exist. We review the cosmological constraints on the effective number of neutrino species, neutrino mass and mixing parameters, lepton number of the universe, presence of sterile neutrino, etc.  相似文献

We study a model in which degenerate sterile neutrinos account for galactic dark matter. We fit the rotation curves of 5 dwarf galaxies with the degenerate sterile neutrinos in hydrostatic equilibrium. Also we estimate the range of sterile neutrino mass by calculating the upper and lower bounds of the mass densities of sterile neutrino halos in the outermost regions of 21 normal galaxies. The observed rotation curves of 5 dwarf galaxies and 21 normal galaxies are consistent with having sterile neutrinos with mass (26–30) eV, and the similarity of the rotation curves of different galaxies emerges naturally in our model.  相似文献

The fluxes and spectra of galactic and extragalactic neutrinos at energy 1011–1019 eV are calculated. In particular, the neutrino flux from the normal galaxies is calculated taking into account the spectral index distribution. The only assumption that seriously affects the calculated neutrino flux atE v 1017 eV is the power-like generation spectrum of protons in the entire considered energy region. The normal galaxies with the accepted parameters generate the metagalactic equivalent electron component (electrons+their radiation) with energy density e8.5×10–7 eV cm–3, while the density of the observed diffuse X-ray radiation alone is 100 times higher. This requires the existence of other neutrino sources and we found the minimized neutrino flux under two limitations: (1) the power-law generation spectrum of protons and (2) production of the observed energy density of the diffuse X-an -radiation. These requirements are met in the evolutionary model of origin of the metagalactic cosmic rays with modern energy density M83.6×10–7 eV cm–3.The possibility of experiments with cosmic neutrinos of energyE v 3×1017 eV is discussed. The upper bound on neutrino-nucleon cross-section <2.2×10–29 cm2 is obtained in evolutionary model from the observed zenith angular distribution of extensive air showers. In Appendix 2 the diffuse X-and -ray flux arising together with neutrino flux is calculated. It agrees with observed flux in the entire energy range from 1 keV up to 100 MeV.  相似文献

Neutrinos couple through a weak neutral current to the density of matter, in particular to the neutron density. Density fluctuations, or phonons, in the neutron fluid may be emitted or absorbed by neutrinos passing through the matter. At high densities, temperatures and neutrino energies the neutrino mean free paths for phonon emission and absorption can be 106 cm. Significant changes in the neutrino momentum and energy accompany these processes. We present a model calculation for neutrino scattering by phonons, and representative numerical results for the neutrino mean free path and mean energy and momentum changes fork B T andE v both ranging from 1 to 27 MeV.Research supported by the National Research Council of Canada.  相似文献

In recent papers it was claimed that SN 1987A data supports the existence of 4.0 eV and 21.4 eV active neutrino mass eigenstates, and it was suggested that such large active neutrino masses could be made consistent with existing constraints including neutrino oscillation data and upper limits on the neutrino flavor state masses. The requirement was that there exist a pair of sterile neutrino mass states nearly degenerate with the active ones, plus a third active-sterile doublet that is tachyonic (m 2<0). Here, independent evidence is presented for the existence of sterile neutrinos with the previously claimed masses based on fits to the dark matter distributions in the Milky Way galaxy and four clusters of galaxies. The fits are in excellent agreement with observations within the uncertainties of the masses. In addition, sterile neutrinos having the suggested masses address the “cusp” problem and the missing satellites problem, as well as that of the “top down” scenario of structure formation—previously a chief drawback of HDM particles. Nevertheless, due to the highly controversial nature of the claim, and the need for two free parameters in the dark matter fits, additional confirming evidence will be required before it can be considered proven.  相似文献

Although very successful in explaining the observed conspiracy between the baryonic distribution and the gravitational field in spiral galaxies without resorting to dark matter (DM), the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) paradigm still requires DM in X-ray bright systems. Here, to get a handle on the distribution and importance of this DM, and thus on its possible form, we deconstruct the mass profiles of 26 X-ray emitting systems in MOND, with temperatures ranging from 0.5 to 9 keV. Initially, we compute the MOND dynamical mass as a function of radius, then subtract the known gas mass along with a component of galaxies which include the cD galaxy with   M / L K = 1  . Next, we test the compatibility of the required DM with ordinary massive neutrinos at the experimental limit of detection  ( m ν= 2 eV)  , with density given by the Tremaine–Gunn limit. Even by considering that the neutrino density stays constant and maximal within the central 100 or 150 kpc (which is the absolute upper limit of a possible neutrino contribution there), we show that these neutrinos can never account for the required DM within this region. The natural corollary of this finding is that, whereas clusters  ( T ≳ 3 keV)  might have most of their mass accounted for if ordinary neutrinos have a 2 eV mass, groups  ( T ≲ 2 keV)  cannot be explained by a 2 eV neutrino contribution. This means that, for instance, cluster baryonic dark matter (CBDM, Milgrom) or even sterile neutrinos would present a more satisfactory solution to the problem of missing mass in MOND X-ray emitting systems.  相似文献

Using cosmological data on the CMB anisotropy and large-scale structure of the Universe, we have obtained new constraints on the sum of the masses of three generations of active neutrinos: Σm ν < 1.05 eV (95% confidence level). Data of the third year of the WMAP mission served as the source of CMB anisotropy data. The mass functions of X-ray clusters of galaxies were taken as the data on the large-scale structure of the Universe. The observational properties of the clusters were obtained during the ROSAT mission and the assumption that the baryon fraction is universal in the Universe was used to determine the total cluster mass.  相似文献

We use a wide range of observations to constrain cosmological models possessing a significant asymmetry in the lepton sector, which offer perhaps the best chance of reconciling a critical-density Universe with current observations. The simplest case, with massless neutrinos, fails to fit many experimental data and does not lead to an acceptable model. If the neutrinos have mass of order 1 eV (which is favoured by some neutrino observations), then models can be implemented which prove a good fit to the microwave anisotropies and large-scale structure data. However, taking into account the latest microwave anisotropy results, especially those from BOOMERANG, we show that the model can no longer accommodate the observed baryon fraction in clusters. Together with the observed acceleration of the present Universe, this puts considerable pressure on such critical-density models.  相似文献

We consider sterile neutrinos as a component of dark matter in the Milky Way and clusters, and compare their rest mass, decay rate and the mixing angle. A radiative decaying rate of order Γ∼10−19 s−1 for sterile neutrino rest mass m s =18–19 keV can satisfactorily account for the cooling flow problem and heating source in Milky Way center simultaneously. Also, these ranges of decay rate and rest mass match the prediction of the mixing angle sin 22θ∼10−3 with a low reheating temperature in the inflation model, which enables the sterile-active neutrino oscillation to be visible in future experiments. However, decaying sterile neutrinos have to be ruled out as a major component of dark matter because of the high decay rate.  相似文献

Time-dependent neutrino transport out of an optically thick neutronized stellar core is calculated to study the effects of neutrino degeneracy and of source depletion. Neutrino trapping inhibits further neutrino emission until neutrinos peel out of the outer zones of the core, exposing successively inner zones. This inwardly propagating neutrino rarefaction wave can lead toe +pv+n oscillations in chemical composition. The effect of neutrino Fermi statistics is to retard considrably and disperse neutrino leakage out of the core, making neutrino transport insignificant during fast stages of core collapse.Supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract EY-76-C-02-3071.  相似文献

The theoretical expectation of the high mass of >400 eV for the particles constituting the dark matter in dwarf-spheroidals as an artifact of the implicit assumption that the density of particles vanishes at the visible edge. On the contrary if our Galaxy and the dwarf-spheroidals are embedded in a neutrino condensation of the dimensions of the cluster thenm - 10 eV can accommodate all the observations.  相似文献

If massive sterile neutrinos exist, their decays into photons and/or electron-positron pairs may give rise to observable consequences. We consider the possibility that MeV sterile neutrino decays lead to the diffuse positron annihilation line in the Milky Way center, and we thus obtain bounds on the sterile neutrino decay rate Γ e ≥10−28 s−1 from relevant astrophysical/cosmological data. Also, we expect a soft gamma flux of 1.2×10−4–9.7×10−4 ph cm−2 s−1 from the Milky Way center which shows up as a small MeV bump in the background photon spectrum. Furthermore, we estimate the flux of active neutrinos produced by sterile neutrino decays to be 0.02–0.1 cm−2 s−1 passing through the earth.  相似文献

The collapse of iron-oxygen stars with masses of 2M has been calculated. The commencement of the collapse is due to dissociation of iron-group nuclei into free nucleons. After a while, the collapse proceeds in consequence of intensive energy losses due to neutrino volume radiation. At an intermediate stage of the collapse, the core — opaque with respect to neutrino radiation (neutrino core) — is formed inside the collapsing star. Both the gradual increase of the mass of the neutrino core and the partial absorption of neutrinos radiated from the surface of the neutrino core by the stellar envelope (deposition) were taken into account in our calculations. The kinetics of oxygen burning in the outer layers of the envelope was also allowed for. Neither the deposition, nor the oxygen burning, result in ejection of stellar envelopes.  相似文献
