Induced polarization (IP) is a geophysical method that is potentially sensitive to the presence of cracks in porous rocks and therefore to damage. We performed time‐domain and frequency domain IP measurements at the Tournemire Underground Research Laboratory (URL, Aveyron, France) in areas where different types of cracks are observed. These cracks correspond to both tectonic fractures and new cracks associated with stress release and desiccation resulting from the excavation of a gallery. These measurements were performed both in eastern and northern galleries of the test site. The eastern gallery was excavated in 1996 while the northern gallery was excavated recently in 2008. This gives us the opportunity to study the electrical characteristics of the excavation damaged zone surrounding the galleries with respect to the age of the excavation. Longitudinal profiles were performed along the floor of the galleries with 48 Cu/CuSO4 electrodes separated by a distance of 20 cm. Chargeability and resistivity were inverted using a Gauss‐Newton iterative approach assuming an isotropic heterogeneous clay‐rock material. The resulting IP tomograms show a correlation between high values of chargeability and the presence of calcite‐filled tectonic fractures. X‐ray analysis indicates that the presence of pyrite in these fractures is a potential source of the observed IP signals. The cracks associated with the mechanical damage of the formation exhibit low values of chargeability, on the same order of magnitude than the chargeability of the clay‐rock matrix and are therefore hardly observable. A smaller IP response associated with the presence of these cracks is observed in the older gallery and this observation is qualitatively related to the desaturation process associated with these cracks. In a specific area of one of the galleries, the presence of calcareous nodules is observed to be an important source of anomalous chargeability. This signature seems to be associated with the presence of pyrite.  相似文献

A crude‐oil spill occurred in 1979 when a pipeline burst near Bemidji, MN. In 1998, the pipeline company installed a dual‐pump recovery system designed to remove crude oil remaining in the subsurface at the site. The remediation from 1999 to 2003 resulted in removal of about 115,000 L of crude oil, representing between 36% and 41% of the volume of oil (280,000 to 316,000 L) estimated to be present in 1998. Effects of the 1999 to 2003 remediation on the dissolved plume were evaluated using measurements of oil thicknesses in wells plus measurements of dissolved oxygen in groundwater. Although the recovery system decreased oil thicknesses in the immediate vicinity of the remediation wells, average oil thicknesses measured in wells were largely unaffected. Dissolved‐oxygen measurements indicate that a secondary plume was caused by disposal of the pumped water in an upgradient infiltration gallery; this plume expanded rapidly immediately following the start of the remediation in 1999. The result was expansion of the anoxic zone of groundwater upgradient and beneath the existing natural attenuation plume. Oil‐phase recovery at this site was shown to be challenging, and considerable volumes of mobile and entrapped oil remain in the subsurface despite remediation efforts.  相似文献

VLF wave impedance measurements have been successfully used to detect air-filled drainage galleries near the town of Alcala, Spain. The galleries are detectable by H-polarization electric field measurements due to the electric field anomalies associated with the galleries and overlying gravel deposits. The forced deviation of the primary current flowlines around the 2D void results in a higher-than-normal apparent resistivity and a relative phase low above the gallery. The findings support earlier theoretical predictions that at very low frequencies (VLFs), galvanic current effects may dominate over vortex currents in moderately conductive terrains. Theoretical modelling confirmed that for a resistive target no detectable E-polarization response can be expected from either magnetic or electric field measurements since current line deviations and vortex effects are negligible under such circumstances. The results demonstrate the importance of using at least two orthogonal VLF transmitters in order that anomalies arising from both galvanic and inductive effects may be identified, irrespective of orientation.  相似文献

Estimating thermal conductivity from core and well log data   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The aim of the presented work was to introduce a method of estimating thermal conductivity using well log data. Many petrophysical properties of rocks can be determined both by laboratory measurements and well-logs. It is thus possible to apply geophysical data to empirical models based on relationships between laboratory measured parameters and derive continuous thermal conductivity values in well profiles. Laboratory measurements were conducted on 62 core samples of Meso-Paleozoic rocks from the Carpathian Foredeep. Mathematical models were derived using multiple regression and neural network methods. Geophysical data from a set of seven well logs: density, sonic, neutron, gamma ray, spectral gamma ray, caliper and resistivity were applied to the obtained models. Continuous thermal conductivity values were derived in three well profiles. Analysis of the obtained results shows good consistence between laboratory data and values predicted from well log data.  相似文献

The border area between the Bohemian Massif and the Carpathians arc is covered by dense networks of repeated levellings as well as horizontal (triangulation, trilateration) measurements. The results were adjusted in separate vertical or horizontal networks respectively. Derived rates of vertical and horizontal movements are presented. The properties of these movements are discussed as a background to the tectonic development of the area under study.  相似文献

Asymptotic analysis of cross-hole hydraulic tests in fractured granite   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Illman and Tartakovsky (2005a, 2005b) developed a new approach for the interpretation of three-dimensional pneumatic well tests conducted in porous or fractured geologic media, which is based on a straight-line analysis of late-time data. We modify this approach to interpret three-dimensional well tests in the saturated zone and use it to analyze the cross-hole hydraulic test data collected in the Full-Scale Engineered Barrier Experiment gallery at the Grimsel Test Site in Switzerland. The equivalent hydraulic conductivity and specific storage obtained from our analysis increase with the radial distance between the centroids of the pumping and monitoring intervals. Since this scale effect is observed from a single test type (cross-hole tests), it is less ambiguous than scale effects typically inferred from laboratory and multiple types of hydraulic tests (e.g., slug, single- and cross-hole tests). The statistical analysis of the estimated hydraulic parameters shows a strong correlation between equivalent hydraulic conductivity and specific storage.  相似文献

Information on the mass and the spatial location of an arbitrary source body can be obtained by performing suitable integrations of 3D gravity and magnetic data along an infinite straight line. No assumptions on the density/magnetization distribution or the shape and location of the source are required. For an oblique borehole, a relationship between the lower limit of the source mass and the distance to the body is obtained. The mass contrast and the magnetic moment of the source can also be estimated. For a vertical borehole, both gravity and vertical magnetic component anomalies have equal areas to the left and right of the depth axis. The particular case of a horizontal gallery not intersecting the body is also studied. If the source is intersected, a lower limit is estimated for the maximum thickness of the body along the gallery. Information on the vertical coordinate of the centre of mass of the source can also be obtained. Numerical tests with synthetic gravity data support the theoretical results.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide is one of the first gases to escape the magmatic environment due to its low solubility in basaltic magmas at low pressures. The exsolved CO2 gas migrates towards the surface through rock fractures and high permeability paths. If an aquifer is located between the magmatic environment and the surface, a fraction of the CO2 emitted is dissolved in the aquifer. In this paper, an estimation of the water mass balance and the CO2 budget in Las Cañadas aquifer, Tenerife, Canary Islands, is presented. Magmatic CO2 is transported by groundwater and discharged through man-made sub-horizontal drains or galleries that exist in this island, and by the flow of groundwater discharged laterally towards other aquifers or to the ocean. In addition, the pCO2 at the gallery mouth (or entrance) and at the gallery bottom (internal and deepest discharge point where the gallery starts) are calculated and mapped. The total CO2 advectively transported by groundwater is estimated to range from 143 to 211 t CO2 d?1. Considering that the diffuse soil emission of CO2 for the same area is 437 t d?1, the diffuse/dissolved CO2 flux ratio varies between 2 and 3. The high dissolved inorganic carbon content of groundwater explains the ability of this low temperature hydrothermal water to dissolve and transfer magmatic CO2 at volcanoes, even during quiescence periods.  相似文献

— A new non-contact and non-destructive optical scanning instrument provided a large number of high-precision measurements of thermal conductivity tensor components in samples of sedimentary and impact rocks, as well as new insights into interrelations between thermal conductivity and other physical properties. More than 800 core samples (dry and fluid-saturated) of sedimentary rocks from different Russian oil-gas deposits and impact rocks from the well “Nördlingen 1973” drilled in the Ries impact structure (Germany) were studied using optical scanning technology. It was established that the thermal conductivity parallel to the stratification is more informative for petrophysical investigations than the thermal conductivity perpendicular to the layering. Different approaches were developed to estimate porosity, permeability, pore space geometry, and matrix thermal conductivity with a combination of thermal conductivity measurements in dry and fluid-saturated samples and mathematical modelling. These approaches allow prediction of the rock porosity and permeability and their spatial distribution along a well using thermal conductivity measurements performed with the optical scanning instrument directly applied to cores. Conditions and constraints for using Lichtenecker-Asaad's theoretical model for the estimation of porosity and thermal conductivity of sedimentary rocks were determined. A correlation between thermal conductivity and acoustic velocity, porosity, density, and electric resistivity of impact rocks was found for different rock types. New relationships between permeability, electrical and thermal conductivity found for sedimentary rocks are described.  相似文献

The dominant role of clouds in modulating and interacting with radiative energy transports within the atmosphere, in providing precipitation, transporting water and influencing air-chemical processes is still not understood well enough to be accurately represented within atmospheric circulation and climate models over all regions of the globe. Also the extraction of real-world cloud properties from satellite measurements still contains uncertainties. Therefore, various projects have been developed within the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX), to achieve more accurate solutions for this problem by direct measurements within cloud fields and other complementary studies. They are based on the hypothesis, that most relevant properties of cloud fields can be parametrized on the basis of the prognostic field variables of atmospheric circulation models, and that the cloud microphysical properties can directly be related – with additional parameters on the particle shapes etc. – to the radiative transfer properties. One of these projects has been the European Cloud and Radiation Experiment (EUCREX) with its predecessor ICE (International Cirrus Experiment). The EUCREX and ICE provided a common platform for research groups from France, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom to concentrate their efforts primarily on high, cold cirrus. They showed, with data from satellites, that this cloud species enhances the atmospheric greenhouse-effect. Numerical mesoscale models were used in sensitivity studies on cloud developments. In-situ measurements of cloud properties were made during more than 30 aircraft missions, where also in-flight comparisons of various instruments were made to ensure the quality of data sets measured from different aircraft. The particle sampling probes, used for in-cloud measurements, showed a disagreement in total number density in all ranges between about 20–50%, while all other instruments agreed quite satisfactorily. A few measured holographic data provided information on typical ice-crystal shapes, which were used in numerical simulations of their absorption and scattering properties.Several new instruments for both in-situ and remote measurement, such as a polar nephelometer, a chopped pyrgeometer and an imaging multispectral polarimeter (POLDER) for cloud and radiation measurements were tested and improved. New algorithms were developed for cloud classifications in multispectral satellite images and also for simulations of the scattering of radiation by non-spherical particles. This paper primarily summarizes the EUCREX results obtained between 1989 and 1996, and provides examples of the many results which have been obtained so far. It is not a complete review of the world-wide state in this field, but it tries to place the EUCREX results into the world-wide development. Therefore many references are made to the results of other groups, which in turn influenced the work within EUCREX.  相似文献

The Ralph M. Parsons World Headquarters building, a twelve-storey steel frame structure, was subjected to a series of forced vibration tests. The natural frequencies, three-dimensional mode shapes and damping coefficients of nine modes of vibration were determined. Other features of this investigation included the study of non-linearities associated with increasing levels of response, detailed measurements of the deformation of the first floor and the ground surrounding the structure, and measurements of strain in one of the columns of the structure during forced excitation. The dynamic characteristics of the building determined by these tests are compared to those predicted by a finite element model of the structure. The properties of primarily translational modes are predicted reasonably well, but adequate prediction of torsional motions is not obtained. The comparison between measured and predicted strains suggests that estimates of stress determined from finite element analyses of buildings might be within 25 per cent of those experienced by the structure for a known excitation.  相似文献

Geophysical well logging has been applied for fracture characterization in crystalline terrains by physical properties measurements and borehole wall imaging. Some of these methods can be applied to monitor pumping tests to identify fractures contributing to groundwater flow and, with this, determine hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity along the well. We present a procedure to identify fractures contributing to groundwater flow using spontaneous potential measurements generated by electrokinetic processes when the borehole water head is lowered and then monitored while recovering. The electrokinetic model for flow through a tabular gap is used to interpret the measured data and determine the water head difference that drives the flow through the fracture. We present preliminary results at a test site in crystalline rocks on the campus of the University of São Paulo.  相似文献

Riverine riparian vegetation has changed throughout the southwestern United States, prompting concern about losses of habitat and biodiversity. Woody riparian vegetation grows in a variety of geomorphic settings ranging from bedrock-lined channels to perennial streams crossing deep alluvium and is dependent on interaction between ground-water and surface-water resources. Historically, few reaches in Arizona, southern Utah, or eastern California below 1530 m elevation had closed gallery forests of cottonwood and willow; instead, many alluvial reaches that now support riparian gallery forests once had marshy grasslands and most bedrock canyons were essentially barren. Repeat photography using more than 3000 historical images of rivers indicates that riparian vegetation has increased over much of the region. These increases appear to be related to several factors, notably the reduction in beaver populations by trappers in the 19th century, downcutting of arroyos that drained alluvial aquifers between 1880 and 1910, the frequent recurrence of winter floods during discrete periods of the 20th century, an increased growing season, and stable ground-water levels. Reductions in riparian vegetation result from agricultural clearing, excessive ground-water use, complete flow diversion, and impoundment of reservoirs. Elimination of riparian vegetation occurs either where high ground-water use lowers the water table below the rooting depth of riparian species, where base flow is completely diverted, or both. We illustrate regional changes using case histories of the San Pedro and Santa Cruz Rivers, which are adjacent watersheds in southern Arizona with long histories of water development and different trajectories of change in riparian vegetation.  相似文献

In this contribution, new relationship between the fundamental site frequency and the thickness of soft sediments is obtained for many sites in Egypt. The Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (“H/V”) technique (known as Nakamura technique) can be used as a robust tool to determine the thickness of soft sediments layers overlaying bedrock from observations and measurements of seismic ambient noise data. In Egypt, numerous seismic ambient noise measurements have been conducted in several areas to determine the dynamic properties of soft soil for engineering purposes. At each site in each studied area, the fundamental site frequency was accurately estimated from the main peak in the spectral ratio between the horizontal and vertical component. Consequently, an extensive database of microtremor measurements, well logging data, and shallow seismic refraction data have been configured and assembled for the studied areas. New formula between fundamental site frequency (f0) and thickness of soft sediments (h) is established. The new formula has been validated and compared with other formulas of earlier scientists, and the results indicate that the calculated depth and geometry of the bedrock surface using new formula are in a good agreement with well logs data and previously published seismic refraction surveys in the investigated sites.  相似文献

It is well known that sediment properties, including sediment‐associated chemical constituents and sediment physical properties, can exhibit significant variations within and between storm runoff events. However, the number of samples included in suspended sediment studies is often limited by time‐consuming and expensive laboratory procedures after stream water sampling. This restricts high frequency sampling campaigns to a limited number of events and reduces accuracy when aiming to estimate fluxes and loads of sediment‐associated chemical constituents. In this study, we address the potential of a portable ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer (220–730 nm) to estimate suspended sediment properties in a resource efficient way. Several field deployable spectrophotometers are currently available for in‐stream measurements of environmental variables at high temporal resolution. These instruments have primarily been developed and used to quantify solute concentrations (e.g. dissolved organic carbon and NO3‐N), total concentrations of dissolved and particulate forms (e.g. total organic carbon) and turbidity. Here we argue that light absorbance values can be calibrated to estimate sediment properties. We present light absorbance data collected at 15‐min intervals in the Weierbach catchment (NW Luxembourg, 0.45 km2) from December 2013 to January 2015. In this proof‐of‐concept study, we performed a local calibration using suspended sediment loss‐on‐ignition (LOI) measurements as an example of suspended sediment property. We assessed the performance of several regression models that relate light absorbance measurements with the percentage weight LOI. The MM‐robust regression method presented the lowest standard error of prediction (0.48%) and was selected for calibration (adjusted r2 = 0.76 between observed and predicted values). The model was then used to predict LOI during a storm runoff event in December 2014. This study demonstrates that spectrophotometers can be used to estimate suspended sediment properties at high temporal resolution and for long‐time spans in a simple, non‐destructive and affordable manner. This study applies array methods to measure the relative proportions of Love and Rayleigh waves in the ambient vibration wavefield. Information on these properties is of special relevance for frequencies around the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral amplitude ratio peak. The analysis of H/V curves, a popular technique in site characterisation, commonly assumes that the curves represent the frequency-dependent Rayleigh wave ellipticity. For the detailed interpretation of amplitudes or the inversion of the curves, it is therefore necessary to estimate and correct for the contribution of other wave types to the ambient vibration wavefield. I use available ambient vibration array measurements to determine the relative amount of Love and Rayleigh waves on the horizontal components by frequency-dependent analysis of the main propagation and polarisation directions, with a special emphasis on the H/V peak frequency as determined from the same recordings. Tests with synthetic data demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, at least in the presence of dominant source regions. Analysis of the data from 12 measurements at nine European sites, which include shallow as well as deep locations that span a wide range of impedance contrasts at the sediment-bedrock interface, indicates that the relative contribution of Rayleigh waves varies widely with frequency, from close to 0% to more than 70%. While most data sets show relative Rayleigh wave contributions between 40% and 50% around the H/V peak, there are also examples where Love waves clearly dominate the wavefield at the H/V peak, even for a site with a low impedance contrast. Longer-term measurements at one site indicate temporal variations in the relative Rayleigh wave content between day- and nighttime. Results calculated with the method introduced herein generally compare well with results of modified spatial autocorrelation analysis. These two methods might be used in a complimentary fashion, as both rely on different properties of the ambient vibration wavefield. This study illustrates that it is possible to measure the relative Rayleigh wave content of the noise wavefield from array data. Furthermore, the examples presented herein indicate it is important to estimate this property, as the assumption that there are an equal proportion of Love and Rayleigh waves is not always correct.  相似文献

Shear wave velocity prediction using seismic attributes and well log data   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
Formation’s properties can be estimated indirectly using joint analysis of compressional and shear wave velocities. Shear wave data is not usually acquired during well logging, which is most likely for cost saving purposes. Even if shear data is available, the logging programs provide only sparsely sampled one-dimensional measurements: this information is inadequate to estimate reservoir rock properties. Thus, if the shear wave data can be obtained using seismic methods, the results can be used across the field to estimate reservoir properties. The aim of this paper is to use seismic attributes for prediction of shear wave velocity in a field located in southern part of Iran. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to select the most relevant attributes to shear velocity data. Considering the nonlinear relationship between seismic attributes and shear wave velocity, multi-layer feed forward neural network was used for prediction of shear wave velocity and promising results were presented.  相似文献

Although clay is composed of disconnected anisotropic clay platelets, many rock physics models treat the clay platelets in shale as interconnected. However, the clay matrix in shales can be modelled as anisotropic clay platelets embedded within a soft isotropic interplatelet region, allowing the influence of disconnected clay platelets on the elastic properties of the clay matrix to be analysed. In this model, properties of the interplatelet region are governed by its effective bulk and shear moduli, whereas the effective properties of the clay platelets are governed by their volume fraction, aspect ratio and elastic stiffness tensor. Together, these parameters implicitly account for variations in clay and fluid properties, as well as fluid saturation. Elastic stiffnesses of clay platelets are obtained from the literature, including both experimental measurements and first-principles calculations of the full anisotropic (monoclinic or triclinic) elastic stiffness tensors of layered silicates. These published elastic stiffness tensors are used to compile a database of equivalent transverse isotropic elastic stiffness tensors, and other physical properties, for eight common varieties of layered silicates. Clay matrix anisotropy is then investigated by examining the influence of these different elastic stiffnesses, and of varying model parameters, upon the effective transverse isotropic elastic stiffness tensor of the clay matrix. The relationship between the different clay minerals and their associated anisotropy parameters is studied, and their impact on the resulting anisotropy of the clay matrix is analysed.  相似文献

High Frequency Mining Seismics. Reflection profiles in mining galleries have been made with a new type of equipment including appropriate arrays, special geophones and high frequency recording (30–2000 c.p.s.). Reflections at frequencies between 600 and 1200 c.p.s. have been obtained, in favourable cases, from coal beds about 3 feet thick, lying at depths reaching 200 feet below the gallery. Good rock compactness is necessary to obtain fair reflections, and in such cases it may be possible to detect discontinuities in the coal beds.  相似文献
