The major mineral assemblages of the metabasites of the Omoiji-Nagasawaarea in central Shikoku are hematite+epidote+chlorite+actinolite, riebeckitic actinolite+epidote+chlorite, epidote+chlorite+actinolite, and pumpellyite+epidote+chlorite+actinolite. The constituentminerals are often heterogeneous and assemblages in the fieldof a thin section sometimes do not obey the phase rule, butif grains apparently in non-equilibrium with others are excludedand domains of chemical equilibrium are appropriately chosenthe assemblages approximately obey the phase rule. The stability of hematite, pumpellyite, and epidote associatedwith chlorite and actinolite can be dealt with in terms of aternary system with appropriate excess phases. By fixing theFe2+/(Fe2+ +Mg) ratio of chlorite, it is dealt with in termsof stability relations in the system Ca2Al3Si3O12(OH)–Ca2AlFe2Si3O12(OH)with excess chlorite, actinolite, quartz, and controlled PH2O.The maximum and minimum Fe3+ contents of epidote in this modelsystem are determined by hematite+epidote+chlorite+actinoliteand pumpellyite+epidote+chlorite+actinolite assemblages. Themaximum Fe3+ of the three phase assemblage epidote+chlorite+actinoliteis insensitive to temperature, but the minimum Fe3+ contentof epidote is sensitive to temperature and can be used to definethe metamorphic grade by a continuous quantity related to temperature. The phase relations expected for the model system are in goodagreement with the parageneses of the Sanbagawa terrain in centralShikoku and offer an explanation to the rule of Miyashiro &Seki (1958a) that the compositional range of epidote enlargeswith increasing temperature. The model also makes it possibleto estimate semi-quantitatively the temperature range in whichthe assemblage pumpellyite+epidote+chlorite+actinolite is stable. The possible maximum range is about 120 ?C, but the assemblageis stable in metabasite only for about 90 ?C. The higher temperaturelimit of the pumpellyite-actinolite facies defined by the disappearanceof pumpellyite in metabasite corresponds to the temperatureat which epidote with Fe3+/(Fe3+ +Al) = 0.10 0.15 coexistswith pumpellyite, actinolite, and chlorite. The compositions of epidotes in the metabasites of the Omoiji-Nagasawaarea cluster around Fe3+/(Fe3+ +Al) = 0.33. The grade of thisarea is close to the lower temperature stability limit of thepumpellyite+epidote+chlorite+actinolite assemblage.  相似文献

Certain ultramafic-mafic lenses exposed in Ticino along thecontact zone between the underlying Simano and overlying Adulanappes display relatively high-pressure phase assemblages. AtAlpe Arami, metabasaltic layers associated with pyropic garnet-bearingIherzolite consist mainly of an early eclogitic assemblage characterizedby Alm39Py37Gross23Spess01+ Di49Hd08Jd43+rutile±kyanite.Iron-magnesium fractionation between garnet+omphacite pairsyields a KD, (Fe2+/Mg)garnet/(Fe2+/Mg)cllnopyroxence, of about6. This earlier assemblage has been replaced by a later, somewhatpargasitic hornblende+oligoclase+clinozoisite phase compatibility.Associated primary garnet peridotites contain Ca-rich clinopyroxeneand Al2O3-poor orthopyroxene. Both rock types have been affectedby a still later period of incipient chloritization. Available phase equilibrium and element partitioning data arecompatible with an inferred P-T condition of origin for theAlpe Arami mafic-ultramafic complex of 965–1000 °C,30–50 kilobars, indicating deep upper mantle generation.Amphibolites could have been produced during depressurizationaccompanying ascent of the mass through the upper mantle, butinasmuch as plagioclase accompanies the hornblende, the assemblageprobably crystallized after emplacement of the complex in theLepontine terrane prior to the termination of the Late Alpineregional metamorphism. Incipient production of high-rank greenschistphases certainly reflects a crustal event.  相似文献

Thermodynamic calculations have shown that when a metallic phase arising due to ferroan ion disproportionation is contained in lower-mantle rocks, carbon occurs as iron carbide and the oxygen fugacity corresponds to the equilibrium of ferropericlase with Fe-Ni alloy. The typical values of oxygen fugacity in zones of diamond formation in the lower mantle lie between the iron-wüstite buffer and six logarithmic units above this level. The processes that proceed in the lower mantle give rise to variation of $f_{O_2 }$ within several orders of magnitude above the elevated $f_{O_2 }$ values, which are necessary for the formation of diamond, as compared with a common level typical of the lower mantle. The mechanisms responsible for redox differentiation in the lower mantle comprise the subduction of oxidized crustal material, mechanical separation of metallic phase and silicate-oxide mineral assemblage enriched in ferric ions, as well as transfer of fused silicate material presumably enriched in Fe3+ through the mantle.  相似文献

Four natural peridotite nodules ranging from chemically depletedto Fe-rich, alkaline and calcic (SiO2 = 43.7–45.7 wt.per cent, A12O3 = 1.6O–8.21 wt. per cent, CaO = 0.70–8.12wt. per cent, alk = 0.10–0.90 wt. per cent and Mg/(Mg+Fe2+)= 0.94–0.85) have been investigated in the hypersolidusregion from 800? to 1250?C with variable activities of H2O,CO2, and H2. The vapor-saturated peridotite solidi are 50–200?Cbelow those previously published. The temperature of the beginningof melting of peridotite decreases markedly with decreasingMg/(Mg+SFe) of the starting material at constant CaO/Al2O3.Conversely, lowering CaO/Al2O3 reduces the temperature at constantMg/(Mg+Fe) of the starting material. Temperature differencesbetween the solidi up to 200?C are observed. All solidi displaya temperature minimum reflecting the appearance of garnet. Thisminimum shifts to lower pressure with decreasing Mg/(Mg + Fe)of the starting material. The temperature of the beginning ofmelting decreases isobarically as approximately a linear functionof the mol fraction of H2O in the vapor (XH2Ov). The data alsoshow that some CO2 may dissolve in silicate melts formed bypartial melting of peridotite. Amphibole (pargasitic hornblende) is a hypersolidus mineralin all compositions, although its P/T stability field dependson bulk rock chemistry. The upper pressure stability of amphiboleis marked by the appearance of garnet. The vapor-saturated (H2O) liquidus curve for one peridotiteis between 1250? and 1300?C between 10 and 30 kb. Olivine, spinel, and orthopyroxene are either liquidus phases or co-exist immediatelybelow the temperature of the peridotite liquidus. The data suggest considerable mineralogical heterogeneity inthe oceanic upper mantle because the oceanic geotherm passesthrough the P/T band covering the appearance of garnet in variousperidotites. The variable depth to the low-velocity zone is explained byvariable aHjo conditions in the upper mantle and possibly alsoby variations in the composition of the peridotite itself. Itis suggested that komatiite in Precambrian terrane could formby direct melting of hydrous peridotite. Such melting requiresabout 1250?C compared with 1600?C which is required for drymelting. The genesis of kimberlite can be related to partial meltingof peridotite under conditions of XH2Ov = 0.5–0.25 (XCO2v= 0.5–0.75). Such activities of H2O result in meltingat depths ranging between 125 and 175 km in the mantle. Thisrange is within the minimum depth generally accepted for theformation of kimberlite.  相似文献

Formation of Carbon and Hydrogen Species in Magmas at Low Oxygen Fugacity   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Studies of iron-bearing silicate melt (ferrobasalt) + iron metallicphase + graphite + hydrogen equilibria show that carbon andhydrogen solubilities in melts are important for the evolutionof the upper mantle. In a series of experiments conducted at3·7 GPa and 1520–1600°C, we have characterizedthe nature (oxidized vs reduced) and quantified the abundancesof C- and H-compounds dissolved in iron-bearing silicate melts.Experiments were carried out in an anvil-with-hole apparatuspermitting the achievement of equal chemical potentials of H2in the inner Pt capsule and outer furnace assembly. The fO2for silicate melt–iron equilibrium was 2·32 ±0·04 log units below iron–wüstite (IW). Theferrobasalt used as starting material experienced a reductionof its iron oxides and silicate network. The counterpart wasa liberation of oxygen reacting with the hydrogen entering thecapsule. The amount of H2O dissolved in the glasses was measuredby ion microprobe and by step-heating and was found to be between1 and 2 wt %. The dissolved carbon content was found to be 1600ppm C by step-heating. The speciation of C and H componentswas determined by IR and Raman spectroscopy. It was establishedthat the main part of the liberated oxygen was used to formOH and to a much lesser extent H2O, and only traces ofH2, CO2 and  相似文献

The Crossite Content of Ca-Amphibole as a Guide to Pressure of Metamorphism   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
A correlation between the crossite component (NaM4) in Ca-amphiboleand pressure of metamorphism has long been recognized (Shido& Miyashiro, 1959), but only recently has the reaction beenidentified which buffers this aspect of amphibole composition(Brown, 1974): Ca-amphibole+iron oxide+albite+chloriteI+H2O (±stilp, qtz) = crossite+epidote (±muscovite, qtz). The exact stoichiometry of the reaction depends on compositionalvariables in the minerals, especially Fe2+/Mg and Fe3+/Al. Ca-amphiboleshould have fixed NaM4, at any given T and P, where it coexistswith iron oxide, albite, and chlorite. Comparison of Ca-amphibole composition with mineral assemblage,in rocks from Otago, N.Z., and elsewhere, supports this hypothesis. In any terrane NaM4 is nearly constant at a particular metamorphicgrade where amphibole exists in the buffering assemblage, butvaries widely outside of this assemblage. Variations in Fe2+/Mgand Fe3+/Al in the amphibole have relatively little effect onNaM4, but in high pressure amphiboles NaM4 varies inverselywith Aliv. Ca-amphiboles from high pressure areas have substantially moreNaM4 (Otago, 0.6 of 2.0) than those from lower pressure areas(Sierra contact aureoles, 0.1). These relations suggest thatin the buffering assemblage, the NaM4 content of Ca-amphiboleshould be a useful relative barometer for low to medium grademetamorphic rocks.  相似文献

The Fish Canyon Tuff, Colorado, forms one of the largest (3000km3 known silicic eruptions in Earth history. The tuff is ahomogeneous quartz latite consisting of 40% phenocrysts (plagioclase, sanidine, biotite, hornblende, quartz, magnetite, apatite, sphene, and ilmenite) in equilibrium with a highly evolved rhyoliticmelt now represented by the matrix glass. Melt inclusions trappedin hornblende and quartz phenocrysts are identical to the newlyanalyzed matrix glass composition indicating that hornblendeand quartz crystallized from a highly evolved magma that subsequentlyexperienced little change. This study presents experimentalphase equilibrium data which are used to deduce the conditions(P, T, fO2, fH2O, etc.) in the Fish Canyon magma chamber priorto eruption. These new data indicate that sanidine and quartzare not liquidus phases until 780?C temperatures are achieved, consistent with Fe-Ti oxide geothermometry which implies thatthe magmatic temperature prior to eruption was 760?30?C. NaturalFe-Ti oxide pairs also suggest that log fO2 was -12.4 (intermediatebetween the Ni-NiO and MnO-Mn3O4 oxygen buffers) in the magmachamber. This fO2.102 is supported by the experimentally determinedvariations in hornblende and melt Mg-numbers as functions offO2 A new geobarometer based on the aluminum content of hornblendesin equilibrium with the magmatic assemblage hornblende, biotite, plagioclase, quartz, sanidine, sphene, ilmenite or magnetite, and melt is calibrated experimentally, and yields pressuresaccurate to ?0.5 kb. Total pressure in the Fish Canyon magmachamber is inferred to have been 2.4 kb (equivalent to a depthof 7.9 km) based on the Al-content of natural Fish Canyon hornblendesand this new calibration. This depth is much shallower thanhas been proposed previously for the Fish Canyon Tuff. Variationsin experimental glass (melt) composition indicate that the magmawas water-undersaturated prior to eruption. XH2O in the fluidphase that may have coexisted with the Fish Canyon magma isestimated to have been 0.5 by comparing the An-content of naturalplagioclases to experimental plagioclases synthesized at differentXH2O and Ptotals. This ratio corresponds to about 5 wt.% waterin the melt at depth. The matrix glass chemistry is reproducedexperimentally under these conditions: 760?C, 2.4 kb, XH2O=0.5,and log fo2=NNO+2 log units. The fugacity of SO2 (91 b) is calculatedfrom the coexistence of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Maximum CO2fugacity (2520 b) is inferred assuming the magma was volatilesaturated at 2.4 kb.  相似文献

Phase Relations on the Actinolite-Pargasite Join   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Phase relations along the join Ca2Mg4Fe2+Si8O22 (OH)2 (Actinolite)-NaCa2Mg3?2Fe0?82+AlSi6Al2O22(OH)2 (Pargasite) have been studied at PH2O = 1 kb andthe oxygen fugacities defined by the iron-wustite(IW) buffer. Actinolite and bornblende are separated by a solvus and thefield of actinolite+hornblende+vapor is present in the regionbetween Ac85Pa15 and Ac55 Pa45 at 680 ?C. Complete miscibilityis achieved at 720 ?C. At temperatures higher than the solvusthere is a continuous solid solution series between the twoend members. The stability field of amphibole solid solutiongradually increases with increasing pargasite content in actinolite. The phase assemblages at temperatures higher than those of asolid solution series between the two end members change withincreasing pargasite content in the bulk composition as follows;Act+Cpx+Qz+V, ActHbl+Cpx+Opx+Qz+V, Hbl+Cpx+Opx+Pl+V and Hbl+Cpx+Pl+Ol+V. In comparison with the Fe-free system, the extent of the miscibilitygap between actinolite and hornblende is reduced by an increasein the Fe2+ content. The present study should provide an adequatebasis for the interpretation of actinolite-hornblende pairsin metamorphic rocks.  相似文献

The subsolidus phase relationships of magnetite, hercynite, hematite, corundum, wostite, and iron are described. The phaseswere synthesized from chemical mixtures. Reactions and solidsolution between them were induced under controlled conditionsof composition, temperature, total vapor pressure, and partialpressure of oxygen. Reaction rates are slow, so that the experimentslasted from 1 to 40 days, and quenching is completely successful. A solvus was determined which limits solid solution along themagnetitc-hercynite join at temperatures below 860o?15oC. Compositionsof the spinel solid solutions were determined by measuring theshift of the (440) reflection, using a powder X-ray diffractometer. The calibration curve, 20 vs. composition, was made from measurementsof spinel solid solutions synthesized in the one-phase region. The cell edge ao changes from 8–391?0.002 A (magnetic,Fe+2Fe2+2O4OJ to 8.150?0.004 (hercynite, Fe+2Al2O4)by ao?8.391–0.00190x- 0.5X210-5 (X is mol per cent FeAl2O4 in solid solution). In the system Fe-Al2-O3-O there are five univariant assemblages: 1. Hematite-corundum+magnetite +V (vapor) 2. Corundum+magnetite+hercynite+V 3. Magnetite+hercynite+w?stite+V 4. Hercynite+wilstite+iron+V 5. Hercynite+iron+corundum+V The lines were located by determining the composition of themagnetite, hercynite, hematite, and corundum solid solutionsfor each assemblage. The diagrams provide a basis for the discussion of the paragenesisof the oxide minerals. The progressive metamorphism of lateritedeposits can be represented by (1) laterites and bauxites: hematiteH+hydratedaluminum oxides; (2) diasporites: hematite+diaspore+corundum, with magnetite as a rare accessory; (3) emery: corundum+magnetite, with hematite as an accessory. The path of these mineral changeson the diagrams shows the decrease in oxygen content of thesolids with decrease in the partial pressure of oxygen and relatesthe aluminum content of the magnetite to temperature. The occurrences of hercynite are discussed. It is a rare mineralbecause it requires unusual conditions to grow, i.e. relativelylow oxygen pressure and an extremely Fe-Al-rich environment.  相似文献

The upper Triassic Karmutsen metabasites from northeast VancouverIsland, B.C., are thermally metamorphosed by the intrusion ofthe Coast Range Batholith. The amygdaloidal metabasites developedin the outer portion of the contact aureole show a progressivemetamorphism from zeolite to prehnite-pumpellyite facies. Thesize of an equilibrium domain is extremely small for these metabasites, and the individual amygdule assemblages are assumed to be inequilibrium. Two major calcite-free assemblages (+chlorite+quartz)are characteristic: (i) laumontite+pumpellyite+epidote in thezeolite facies and (ii) prehnite+pumpellyite+epidote in theprehnite-pumpellyite facies. The assemblages and compositionsof Ca-Al silicates are chemographically and theoretically interpretedon the basis of the predicted P-T grid for the model basalticsystem, CaO-MgO-A12O3-Fe2O3-SiO2-H2O. The results indicate:(1) local equilibrium has been approached in mineral assemblagesand compositions; (2) the XFe3+ values in the coexisting Ca-Alsilicates decrease from epidote, through pumpellyite to prehnite;(3) with increasing metamorphic grade, the Fe3+ contents ofepidotes in reaction assemblages decrease in the zeolite facies, then increase in the prehnite-pumpellyite facies rocks. Suchvariations in the assemblages and mineral compositions are controlledby a sequence of continuous and discontinuous reactions, andallow delineation of T-XFe3+ relations at constant pressure. The transition from the zeolite to prehnite-pumpellyite faciesof the Karmutsen metabasites is defined by a discontinuous reaction:0·18 laumontite+pumpellyite+0·15 quartz = 1·31prehnite+ 0·78 epidote+0·2 chlorite+ 1·72H2O, where the XFe3+ values of prehnite, pumpellyite and epidoteare 0·03, 0·10 and 0·18, respectively. These values together with available thermodynamic data andour preliminary experimental data are used to calculate theP-T condition for the discontinuous reaction as P = 1·1±0·5 kb and T = 190±30°C. The effectsof pressure on the upper stability of the zeolite facies assemblagesare discussed utilizing T-XFe3+ diagrams. The stability of thelaumontite-bearing assemblages for the zeolite facies metamorphismof basaltic rocks may be defined by either continuous or discontinuousreactions depending on the imposed metamorphic field gradient.Hence, the zeolite and prehnite-pumpellyite facies transitionboundary is multivariant.  相似文献

Distribution of Ferric Iron in some Upper-Mantle Assemblages   总被引:16,自引:5,他引:11
The distribution of ferric iron among the phases of upper-mantlerocks, as a function of pressure (P), temperature (T) and bulkcomposition, has been studied using 57Fe Mssbauer spectroscopyto determine the Fe3+/Fe ratios of mineral separates from 35peridotite and pyroxenite samples. The whole-rock Fe3+ complementof a peridotite is typically shared approximately evenly amongthe major anhydrous phases (spinel and/or garnet, orthopyroxeneand clinopyroxene), with the important exception of olivine, which contains negligible Fe3+. Whole-rock Fe3+ contents areindependent of the T and P of equilibration of the rock, butshow a well-defined simple inverse correlation with the degreeof depletion in a basaltic component. Fe3+ in spinel and inboth pyroxenes from the spinel Iherzolite facies shows a positivecorrelation with temperature, presumably owing to the decreasein the modal abundance of spinel. In garnet peridotites, theFe3+ in garnet increases markedly with increasing T and P, whereasthat in clinopyroxene remains approximately constant. The complexnature of the partitioning of Fe3+ between mantle phases resultsin complicated patterns of the activities of the Fe3+ -bearingcomponents, and thus in calculated equilibrium fO2, which showlittle correlation with whole-rock Fe3+ or degree of depletion.Whether Fe3+ is taken into account or ignored in calculatingmineral formulae for geothermobarometry can have major effectson the resulting calculated T and P. For Fe-Mg exchange geothermometers, large errors must occur when applied to samples more oxidizedor reduced than the experimental calibrations, whose fO2 conditionsare largely unknown. Two-pyroxene thermometry is more immuneto this problem, and probably provides the most reliable P—Testimates. Accordingly, the convergence of P—T valuesderived for a given garnet peridotite assemblage may not necessarilybe indicative of mineral equilibrium. The prospects for thecalculation of accurate Fe3+ contents from electron microprobeanalyses by assuming stoichiometry are good for spinel, uncertainfor garnet, and distinctly poor for pyroxenes. Proterozoic migmatitic paragneisses exposed in the McCulloughRange, southern Nevada, consist of cordierite+almanditic garnet+biotite+sillimanite+plagioclase+K-feldspar+quartz+ilmenite+hercynite.This assemblage is indicative of a low-pressure fades seriesat hornblende-granulite grade. Textures record a single metamorphicevent involving crystallization of cordierite at the expenseof biotite and sillimanite. Thermobarometry utilizing cation exchange between garnet, biotite, cordierite, hercynite, and plagioclase yields a preferred temperaturerange of 590–750?C and a pressure range of 3–4 kb.Equilibrium among biotite, sillimanite, quartz, garnet, andK-feldspar records aH2O between 0?03 and 0?26. The low aH2Otogetherwith low fO2 (QFM) and optical properties of cordierite indicatemetamorphism under fluid-absent conditions. Preserved mineralcompositions are not consistent with equilibrium with a meltphase. Earlier limited partial melting was apparently extensiveenough to cause desiccation of the pelitic assemblage. The relatively low pressures attending high-grade metamorphismof the McCullough Range paragneisses allies this terrane withbiotite-cordierite-garnet granulites in other orogenic belts.aosure pressures and temperatures require a transient apparentthermal gradient ofat least 50?C/km during part of this Proterozoicevent in the southern Cordillera. *Present address: Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90024-1567  相似文献

Crystallization of Chromite and Chromium Solubility in Basaltic Melts   总被引:6,自引:3,他引:6
The equilibrium between chromite and melt has been determinedon four basalts at temperatures of 1200–1400?C over arange of oxygen fugacity (fo2) and pressures of 1 atm and 10kb. The Cr content of chromite-saturated melts at 1300?C and1 atm ranges from 0?05 wt.% Cr2O3 at a log fo2= –3 to1?4 wt.% at a log fo2=–12?8. The Cr2+/Cr3+ of melt increaseswith decreasing fo2 and is estimated by assuming a constantpartitioning of Cr3+ between chromite and melt at constant temperature. The estimated values of Cr2+/Cr3+ in the melt are at fo2 valuesof 4–5 orders of magnitude lower than the equivalent Fe2+/Fe3+values. The Cr/(Cr+Al) of chromite coexisting with melt at constanttemperature changes little with variation of fo2 below log fo2=–6.Five experiments at 10 kb indicate that Cr2O3 dissolved in themelt is slightly higher and the Cr/(Cr + Al) of coexisting chromiteis slightly lower than experiments at 1 atm pressure. Thus variationin total pressure cannot explain the large variations of Cr/(Cr+ Al) that are common to mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) chromite. Experiments on a MORB at 1 atm at fo2 values close to fayalite-magnetite-quartz(FMQ) buffer showed that the Al2O3 content of melt is highlysensitive to the crystallization or melting of plagioclase, and consequently coexisting chromite shows a large change inCr/(Cr + Al). It would appear, therefore, that mixing of a MORBmagma containing plagioclase with a hotter MORB magma undersaturatedin plagioclase may give rise to the large range of Cr/(Cr +Al) observed in some MORB chromite.  相似文献

Within the Isortoq Complex of central West Greenland, doleritedykes have been metamorphosed in upper amphibolite to garnetgranulite facies. Detailed sampling and petrographic study ofthese dykes demonstrate that the entire sequence of assemblagesmay occur in individual dykes, with the amphibolite facies assemblagesnormally restricted to dyke margins, garnet granulite faciesrocks occurring in the dyke cores, and pyroxene granulite faciesrocks intervening between these two. Electron microprobe analysisof all coexisting phases demonstrates that the progression fromamphibolite facies to granulite facies assemblages results inthe extraction of edenite and tschermakite components from theamphibole in approximately a 2: 1 ratio. As amphibole breakdownproceeds, systematic changes in element abundance within amphiboleoccur when reactions are crossed, due to the development ofnew phases. The algebraic removal of small but systematic compositionalvariations within the dykes allows derivation of six equilibria, which provide a general model for metamorphism of basaltic rocksunder high grade metamorphic conditions. This model takes theform of the idealized assemblage sequences which will developalong (regional) gradients in XH2O, temperature and/or solidpressure. Analysis of these equilibria demonstrates that variablesilica activity and Fe2+–Mg2+ exchange will modify reactionstoichiometry, will affect the ratio of edenite to tschermakitein amphibole breakdown reactions, and will modify the compositionof the product plagioclase. These variations together with variationsin water fugacity will locally modify the ideal assemblage sequences, and will explain the complex assemblage relationships observedin metabasic rocks of natural high grade terranes. *Present address: Instituttet for Teknisk Geologi, Danish Technical University, Building 204, DK–2800 Lyngby, Denmark  相似文献

Layered gabbros at Nordre Aputit?q and Kruuse Fjord were emplacedduring extensional tectonism that led to the formation of theNorth Atlantic basin in the Early Tertiary. Sub-solidus reactionsbetween the gabbros and hydrothermal fluids formed superimposedalteration assemblages in fractures, cavities, and the adjacentgabbros. The earliest secondary minerals are Ca-Al amphibole+ clinopyroxene + biotite ? plagioclase that form thin veinsor porous pegmatitic masses. These minerals are crosscut, overgrownor partially replaced by one or more generations of prehniteand epidote bearing assemblages associated with filling of thefractures and cavities, and with extensive wall rock albitization. Wide variations in the partitioning of Fe3+ and Al between coexistingprehnite and epidote solid solutions occur in these alteredgabbros. The partitioning data define distinct clusters in termsof associated mineralogy and paragenetic relations. This, togetherwith prehnite and epidote compositions from active geothermalsystems, are used to evaluate the thermodynamic properties ofthe intercrystalline exchange reaction:When compared to thecompositions of prehnite and epidote in the Nordre Aputit?qand Kruuse Fjord intrusions, it is concluded that the latestand lowest temperature generations of prehnite and epidote displaydisequilibrium partitioning of Fe3+ and Al, manifested by theoccurrence of prehnite that is relatively enriched in Fe3+ Thermodynamic analysis of phase relations in the system Na2O-CaO-Al2O3-Fe2O3-FeO-SiO2-H2O-HClis used to determine local equilibrium constraints on Fe3+-Alsubstitution in prehnite and epidote. It appears that parageneticand compositional relations of prehnite and epidote are sensitiveindicators of local fluctuations in fluid composition and temperature. The complex magmatic and structural history of the gabbros atNordre Aputit?q relative to Kruuse Fjord is considered to beresponsible for the differences in mineral paragenesis and compositionsof prehnite and epidote within these intrusions.  相似文献

A method to estimate the oxygen fugacity (fO2) during the crystallizationof kimberlites is developed using the Fe content of CaTiO3 perovskite(Pv), a common groundmass phase in these rocks. With increasingfO2, more Fe exists in the kimberlitic liquid as Fe3+, and thuspartitions into Pv. Experiments to study the partitioning ofFe between Pv and kimberlite liquid were conducted at 100 kPaon simple and complex anhydrous kimberlite bulk compositionsfrom 1130 to 1300°C over a range of fO2 from NNO –5 to NNO + 4 (where NNO is the nickel–nickel oxide buffer),and at Nb and rare earth element (REE) contents in the startingmaterials of 0–5 wt % and 1500 ppm, respectively. Thepartitioning of Fe between Pv and kimberlite liquid is influencedmostly by fO2, although the presence of Nb increases the partitionof Fe3+ into perovskite at a given T and fO2. Multiple linearregression (MLR) of all the experimental data produces a relationshipthat describes the variation of Fe and Nb in Pv with fO2 relativeto the NNO buffer:

(uncertaintiesat 2, and Nb and Fe as cations per three oxygens). Over therange of conditions of our experiments, this relationship showsno temperature (T) dependence, is not affected by the bulk Fecontent of the kimberlite starting material and reproduces experimentaldata to within 1 log fO2 unit. Experimental Melting of Carbonated Peridotite at 6-10 GPa   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Partial melting of magnesite-bearing peridotites was studiedat 6–10 GPa and 1300–1700°C. Experiments wereperformed in a multianvil apparatus using natural mineral mixesas starting material placed into olivine containers and sealedin Pt capsules. Partial melts originated within the peridotitelayer, migrated outside the olivine container and formed poolsof quenched melts along the wall of the Pt capsule. This allowedthe analysis of even small melt fractions. Iron loss was nota problem, because the platinum near the olivine container becamesaturated in Fe as a result of the reaction Fe2SiO4Ol = FeFe–Ptalloy + FeSiO3Opx + O2. This reaction led to a gradual increasein oxygen fugacity within the capsules as expressed, for example,in high Fe3+ in garnet. Carbonatitic to kimberlite-like meltswere obtained that coexist with olivine + orthopyroxene + garnet± clinopyroxene ± magnesite depending on P–Tconditions. Kinetic experiments and a comparison of the chemistryof phases occasionally grown within the melt pools with thosein the residual peridotite allowed us to conclude that the meltshad approached equilibrium with peridotite. Melts in equilibriumwith a magnesite-bearing garnet lherzolite are rich in CaO (20–25wt %) at all pressures and show rather low MgO and SiO2 contents(20 and 10 wt %, respectively). Melts in equilibrium with amagnesite-bearing garnet harzburgite are richer in SiO2 andMgO. The contents of these oxides increase with temperature, whereas the CaO content becomes lower. Melts from magnesite-freeexperiments are richer in SiO2, but remain silicocarbonatitic.Partitioning of trace elements between melt and garnet was studiedin several experiments at 6 and 10 GPa. The melts are very richin incompatible elements, including large ion lithophile elements(LILE), Nb, Ta and light rare earth elements. Relative to theresidual peridotite, the melts show no significant depletionin high field strength elements over LILE. We conclude fromthe major and trace element characteristics of our experimentalmelts that primitive kimberlites cannot be a direct productof single-stage melting of an asthenospheric mantle. They rathermust be derived from a previously depleted and re-enriched mantleperidotite. KEY WORDS: multianvil; carbonatite melt; peridotite; kimberlite; element partitioning  相似文献

Four natural peridotite nodules ranging from chemically depletedto Fe-rich, alkaline and calcic (SiO2=43?7–45?7 wt. percent, Al2O3=1?6O–8?21 wt. per cent, CaO=0?70–8?12wt. per cent,alk=0?10–0?90 wt. per cent and Mg/(Mg+Fe2+)=0?94–0?85)have been investigated in the hypersolidus region from 800?to 1250?C with variable activities of H2O, CO2, and H2. Thevapor-saturated peridotite solidi are 50–200?C below thosepreviously published. The temperature of the beginning of meltingof peridotite decreases markedly with decreasing Mg/(Mg+Fe)of the starting material at constant CaO/Al2O3. Conversely, lowering CaO/Al2O3 reduces the temperature at constant Mg/(Mg+Fe)of the starting material. Temperature differences between thesolidi up to 200?C are observed. All solidi display a temperatureminimum reflecting the appearance of garnet. This minimum shiftsto lower pressure with decreasing Mg/(Mg+Fe) of the startingmaterial. The temperature of the beginning of melting decreasesisobarically as approximately a linear function of the mol fractionof H2O in the vapor (XH2O). The data also show that some CO2may dissolve in silicate melts formed by partial melting ofperidotite. Olivine, spinel, and orthopyroxene are either liquidus phases or coexist immediatelybelow the temperature of the peridotite liquidus. The data suggest considerable mineralogical heterogeneity inthe oceanic upper mantle because the oceanic geotherm passesthrough the P/T band covering the appearance of garnet in variousperidotites. The variable depth to the low-velocity zone is explained byvariable aH2O conditions in the upper mantle and possibly alsoby variations in the composition of the peridotite itself. It is suggested that komatiite in Precambrian terrane couldform by direct melting of hydrous peridotite. Such melting requiresabout 1250?C compared with 1600?C which is required for drymelting. The genesis of kimberlite can be related to partial meltingof peridotite under conditions of (). Such activities of H2Oresult in melting at depths ranging between 125 and 175 km inthe mantle. This range is within the minimum depth generallyaccepted for the formation of kimberlite.  相似文献

The equilibrium 3FeAl2O4 + 3Al2SiO3 = 5 Al2O3 (1) has been calibrated in the piston-cylinder apparatus. Experimentswere carried out using well-calibrated NaCl furnace assembliesand Ag80Pd20 capsules with oxygen fugacity buffered at or neariron–w?stite. The equilibrium is located at less than7?2 kb at 85O?C and between 8?0 and 8?2, 10?0 and 10?5, and12?0 and 12?2 kb at 900, 1000, and 1100?C, respectively. Experimentshave also been conducted to determine the effect of gahnite(ZnAl2O4) component in spinel on equilibrium (1). Graphite capsuleswere used with oxygen fugacity buffered at or near graphite-CO-CO2.The addition of zinc displaces the reaction to higher pressures. For hercyniteg86-gahnite14, the equilibrium is located between9?4 and 9?6 and 12?7 and 13?0kb at 900 and 1050?C, respectively. For hercynite70-gahnite30, the equilibrium is located between10?8 and 11?0 and 15?4 and 15?6 kb at 900 and 1050?C, respectively. The results indicate that hercynite-gahnite solutions are somewhatnon-ideal (WG = +6?54 kJ/mol at 900?Q assuming a symmetric regularsolution model. A thermobarometer based on equilibrium (1) is applicable inhigh-grade metapelitic rocks. Pressure/temperature estimatesusing this equilibrium agree with other well-calibrated thermometersand barometers. Failure of equilibrium (1) to intersect the equilibrium 3 FeAl2O4 + 5 SiO2 = Fe3Al2Si3O12 + 2 Al2SiO5 (2) indicates that the equilibrium corundum + quartz = sillimaniteis metastable at all pressures and temperatures. This impliesthat co-occurrences of corundum and quartz in granulites aremetastable.  相似文献
