The Estonian School results (Jõeveeret al., 1977) concerning the galaxy cell structure were partly interpreted in the spirit of Zwicky's idea on intergalactic dust, although it remained a speculation. The same view was proposed also by Rudnicki to explain the evident deficit of galaxies in the central region (Central Void) of the Jagellonian field. (Ziba (1974) tried to explain the effect of the central void in terms of an interstellar obscuration.) This explanation of the central void (CV) in terms of a possible intergalactic dust was opened up again inNuovo Cimento, 1984 and 1985; and its merits considered by Rudnickiet al. inComments on Astrophysics, 1989. Now we present a new solution of the problem of the CV mystery.  相似文献

The results of the computations of the chemical evolution for a galaxy cluster are presented. The matter exchange between galaxies and intergalactic medium is taken into account. Two dependences of star formation rate on time are considered: (i) monotonously decreasing dependence characteristic of elliptical galaxies, (ii) dependence having two peaks associated with creation of spiral galaxy subsystems, with suppression of star formation at the period between maxima. It is assumed that galactic ejection is due to explosions of II-type supernova with massesm5M , and that the accretion on to a galaxy depends but weakly on the time. By comparing the obtained results with total combination of available observations, it is established that the rate of gaseous exchange between a galaxy and intergalactic medium should be rather large: 0.03M gal Gyr–1. Besides, the activity of each type of galaxy leads to an approximately equal enrichment of intergalactic gas by new elements synthesized in the stars. The existence of a large accretion on to the Galaxy leads to the decrease of primordial deuterium abundance by a factor of no more than 2 during the galaxy evolution time. It enables us to assume that the standard Big Bang model with baryon density parameter b 0.1 may be considered as true.  相似文献

The observations of the reddening of the distant galaxies and the weak diffuse radiation in the clusters of galaxies can be interpreted as a consequence of the presence of dust grains in the intergalactic medium. When allowance is made for the destruction of the grains in collision with particles of the hot gas, its lifetime is about 107–108 yr at a gas concentrationn g 10–3 cm–3. The detection of the infrared (IR) emission from the galaxy clusters might be the test for the proof of the presence of dust grains in the intergalactic medium. In this paper the estimates of the expected intensities and fluxes of IR emission for the spectral region 50–300 are presented for two galaxy clusters in Coma and Perseus. The parameters of the hot gas spatial distribution are chosen from X-ray observations. Having assumed that intergalactic dust can be ejected only from the galaxies, we used such a model for intergalactic dust grains which explains very well the interstellar dust effects. It is shown that the dust temperature, which is determined from the general energetic balance of the dust grains, can achieve some scores of degrees of Kelvin. Two models of the dust spatial distribution are considered. It is found that the maximum of IR flux for the Coma cluster lies near =100 and the same for the Perseus cluster near 50–70. The total fluxes of IR emission from these clusters are about 105–106 Jy and can be detected by modern observational methods.  相似文献

The presence of L a -forests in the spectra of quasars is considered as proof of the fragmentary structure of the intergalactic medium. The masses of the clumps (of clouds) will increase as they merge together. Once the radial concentration of neutral hydrogen in a cloud attains its critical value, star formation begins, and the cloud turns into a galaxy. Certain physical properties of clouds are considered and a new approach to the investigation of the evolution of systems of clouds is proposed.Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 37, No. 1, pp. 35–42, January–March, 1994.  相似文献

Charged dust grains of radiia3×10–63×10–5 cm may be driven out of the galaxy due to radiation pressure of starlight. Once clear of the main gas-dust layer, dust grains may then escape into intergalactic space. Such grains are virtually indestructible-being evaporated only during galaxy formation. The dust grains, once injected into the intergalactic medium, may acquire suprathermal energy, thus suprathermal grains in collision with magnetized cloud by the Fermi process. In order to attain relativistic energy, suprathermal grains have to move in and out (scattering) of the magnetic field of the medium. It is now well established that high energy cosmic rays are of the order 1020 eV or more. We have speculated that these high energy (>-1018 eV) cosmic ray particles are charged dust grains, of intergalactic origin. This is possible only if there exists a magnetic field in the intergalactic medium.  相似文献

We present an investigation of the relationships between the radio properties of a giant radio galaxy MRC B0319−454 and the surrounding galaxy distribution with the aim of examining the influence of intergalactic gas and gravity associated with the large-scale structure on the evolution in the radio morphology. Our new radio continuum observations of the radio source, with high surface brightness sensitivity, images the asymmetries in the megaparsec-scale radio structure in total intensity and polarization. We compare these with the three-dimensional galaxy distribution derived from galaxy redshift surveys. Galaxy density gradients are observed along and perpendicular to the radio axis: the large-scale structure is consistent with a model wherein the galaxies trace the ambient intergalactic gas and the evolution of the radio structures are ram-pressure limited by this associated gas. Additionally, we have modelled the off-axis evolution of the south-west radio lobe as deflection of a buoyant jet backflow by a transverse gravitational field: the model is plausible if entrainment is small. The case study presented here is a demonstration that giant radio galaxies may be useful probes of the warm-hot intergalactic medium believed to be associated with moderately over dense galaxy distributions.  相似文献

The results of computing the evolution of a disk subsystem of a spiral galaxy taking into account radial gradients of chemical elements (D,4He,12C,13C,14N,16O,7Li, Fe) are presented. It is shown that flow of intergalactic matter accreting on to the galaxy results in smoothing the radial gradients of gas and chemical elements, especially at the latest stage of the evolution. The final gradients depend weakly on the age of the galaxy and value of the Hubble constanth. The best agreement between calculated and observed abundance of4He is revealed if the primordial yield isY 0=0.25. The small decrease of the primordial deuterium abundance confirms the conclusion that the baryon density parameter is small: b h 50 2 1. Therefore, the nature of dark matter should be non-baryonic.  相似文献

Repeated SN-explosion provide large amounts of thermal energy as well as energetic particles through a 1. order Fermi-process. Both effects together with the generation of Alfvén-waves are considered to drive a large scale outflow from a galaxy. These so-called galactic windstransport stellar material enriched by heavy elements into the intergalactic space explaining also the large amount of metals found inthe intergalactic gas. The present contribution is focused on time-dependenteffects which originate from galactic winds driven by a star burst activity. Shock waves travelling through the galactic wind and radiative cooling within the expanding plasma lead to complex flow structures. Depending e.g. on theSFR of the galaxy galactic winds can remove almost all ISM into the galactic halo and therefore cease a subsequent star formation.  相似文献

We report the first detection of a water megamaser in a radio-loud galaxy, 3C 403, and present a follow-up study using the VLA. 3C 403 has been observed as a part of a small sample of FR II galaxies with evidence of nuclear obscuration. The isotropic luminosity of the maser is 1200 L. With a recessional velocity of cz 17680 km s–1 it is the most distant water maser so far reported. The line arises from the densest (> 108 cm–3) interstellar gas component ever observed in a radio-loud galaxy. Two spectral features are identified, likely bracketing the systemic velocity of the galaxy. Our interferometric data clearly indicate that these arise from a location within 0.1 (110 pc) from the active galactic nucleus. We conclude that the maser spots are most likely associated with the tangentially seen parts of a nuclear accretion disk, while an association with dense warm gas interacting with the radio jets cannot yet be ruled out entirely.  相似文献

We report the results of 3-μm spectroscopy towards the nucleus of a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5506. A weak absorption feature of carbonaceous dust is detected at ∼3.4 μm. The optical depth ratio of the 3.4-μm carbonaceous dust absorption to the 9.7-μm silicate dust absorption is smaller by more than a factor of 2 than that in the interstellar medium in our Galaxy. The small ratio is consistent with the idea that the obscuration towards the nucleus of NGC 5506 is caused mainly by dust grains in its host galaxy (type S0/a) and that the contribution of carbonaceous dust grains to the visual extinction there is smaller than that in our Galaxy (type Sb/bc).  相似文献

Theories to explain the origin of the cosmic diffuse -ray background generally fall into one of two broad categories: those which attribute the emission to particle interctions in intergalactic space and those which attribute it to the summation of numerous, unresolved discrete sources, including normal field galaxies, active galactic nuclei and clusters of galaxies. Strong support for the latter interpretation is given by recent measurements of -ray emission from external galaxies, mainly Seyfert galaxies. Their summed contribution has been evaluated elsewhere; here instead, we use recent observational data on the -ray emission from our own galaxy to estimate the contribution of normal galaxies to the cosmic diffuse -radiation. Our result indicates that this contribution is limited to less than 0.1% and can therefore be neglected.  相似文献

Stochastic simulations of galaxy fields, using the cluster multiplicity function obtained for the Lick galaxy counts, reproduces satisfactorily the observed distribution of galaxies from COSMOS measures on a deep UKST and AAT plate limited atB22.0 andB23.2, respectively. The results imply that no strong evolutionary effect is present in the clustering of galaxies, at least out to redshiftsz *0.65.  相似文献

It is shown that the high redshift intergalactic gas that probably contains most of the baryonic density b = 0.05(Ho = 75kms-1 Mpc-1) in the standard Cold Dark Matter model can be detected through "true" intergalactic Thompson-scattered halos or light echoes around isotropic radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies. These cosmological halos, which form in the uniform ionized medium around "old" non-evolving sources, have a very large degree of polarization, up to pmax 44 percent at a projected distance half the light-age radius, and a plateau in the annular polarized flux density within 1/3 of the light-age radius, which is about 4 arc min for sources older than 107 years at z 4. The optimal wavelength range for halo polarimetric observations is 20 - 30 cm, depending on the Galactic rotation measure in the direction of the source, the spectral index of the source, and the specific maximized parameter of the halo. If observed with large single-dish radiotelescopes, the 21 cm polarized brightness temperatures of some inner halos, for example the halo around the quasar OQ 172 (S1400 = 2.5 Jy,z = 3.53), are of the same order of magnitude as the current total-intensity limits for cosmic background fluctuations on arc min scales. The halo test can be extended to larger volumes of space by concentric co-adding of source-normalized halos around the much more numerous isotropic radio galaxies. The expected ensemble-averaged profile of the polarized flux density around the symmetry center is calculated by integrating over the halo ages, assuming a uniform source-age distribution. In addition to the electron density or a lower limit for b based on the halo brightness, the characteristic life time of the radio emission can be derived based on its angular size. If there is a moderate deviation of the density evolution of the intergalactic gas from the conservative cubic law due to galaxy formation, high redshift radio halos may be on the rising branch of their brightness beyond its minimum, similar to the well known nonmonotonic behaviour of angular sizes.  相似文献

Absorption by gas and dust in circumstellar Hii regions within primeval galaxies could seriously depress the far-ultraviolet continuum radiation emitted by primeval galaxies. This effect might account for the failure of Partridge (1974) and Davis and Wilkinson (1974) to detect the redshifted radiation from primeval galaxies at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. A primeval galaxy becomes very bright only during the final stages of contraction. Provided that dust can form by the time the primeval galaxy reaches peak luminosity, a significant fraction of the stellar far-ultraviolet radiation is converted into far-infrared. Thus an appropriate spectral region to search for the redshifted integrated background from primeval galaxies lies between 350 , where the 2.7 K microwave background radiation becomes important, and 150 , where other extragalactic discrete sources, such as nearby galactic nuclei, may contribute. The expected IR flux is calculated with Kaufman's (1975) model for the star formation rate in the contracting galaxy. Letz p be the redshift andT g the grain temperature when the primeval galaxy becomes very bright. Unlessz p10 orT g is fairly high, the intensity of the far-infrared radiation from primeval galaxies would be dominated by the high frequency tail of the 2.7 K microwave background. On the other hand, if dust is unimportant, we determine the spectral energy distribution of a primeval galaxy emitted in the range 912 Å to 2050 Å; we find that the luminosities are not very sensitive to the dependence of effective temperatures on metal abundance.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Chatterjee, 1984), we studied the formation of ring galaxies due to head-on collisions between disk and spherical galaxies. The rings so formed are quite prominent and well defined. However, in the domain of rings, there are many faint rings which are ill defined and are so faint that they lie on the borderline of detectability. In this paper the formation of such rings is investigated.Using the impulsive approximation technique, in this paper we study an off-center collision between an exponential model disk galaxy and a polytropic (n=4) model spherical galaxy, in which the spherical galaxy moves normal to the plane of the disk galaxy and grazes its periphery. The radii of the two galaxies are taken to be equal, but due to the high central concentration of the spherical galaxy its radius is effectively one-third that of the disk galaxy. It is found that, as a result of the collision, the disk galaxy expands and attains an oblate shape. If the fractional change in binding energy of the disk galaxy, U/|U|, lies between 0.001 to 0.01, then a faint ring structure is formed which does not close on itself. If U/|U|0.01, then in addition to the faint ring a bridge and tail are formed. The ability of such low-energy collisions to affect even minor structural changes in the disk is due to the preferentially higher energy changes occurring in the side nearer to the perturbing galaxy than in the opposite side. Consequently, the structural changes produced are asymmetric.Such a faint ring may elude detection on photographs, but it will be revealed by sensitive photometric observations. There are several examples of such faint ring structures embedded in disks, which have been detected by observation.  相似文献

Theories of galactic structure are reviewed briefly before comparing them with recent observations. Also reviewed is the evidence for an intergalactic magnetic field and its possible effects on gas concentrations and patterns of star creation, including spiral arms. It is then shown that normal spiral galaxies may be divided into the M51-type and others. The rare M51-type have Hi gas arms coincident with unusually filamentary and luminous optical arms; they also have a companion galaxy. The remaining great majority of spirals have no well-defined gas arms and their optical arms are irregular, broader and less luminous; they have no companion galaxy. It appears that without exception the half-dozen or so galaxies whose structures appear to support the density-wave theory show one or more of the characteristics of the rare type of spiral, and that the three principal confirmations of the spiral-wave idea (M51, M81, M101) have companions which may account for their arms. Toomre has rejected this idea on the grounds that his models do not agree with the observed structures. It is shown that these models are inadequate in two major respects, and when replaced by magneto-tidal models using non-uniform gas disks one might expect agreement. The original hydromagnetic model of spiral arms is now reserved for non-interacting galaxies, of which M33 might be taken as a prototype. The model predicts broad or massive optical arms and no corresponding arms of neutral hydrogen, as observed.  相似文献

We propose an Abelian Higgs model for spiral galaxies in which the latter are treated as topologically stable magneticvorto-sources (-sinks). The model is characterized by the minimum coupling between the electromagnetic vector potential and a scalar, complex-valued Higgs field that results - for an idealized cylindrically symmetric case - in a perpendicular to the galaxy's plane distribution of magnetic field strength whose total flux is a discrete-valued quantity - aninteger multiple of the elementary flux unit. Adopting the hypothesis that spiral arms trace the curves of a constant phase of the Higgs field we demonstrate that, for an almost-everywhere divergence-free vector potential, the arms acquire the observationally well-established form of logarithmic spirals whose woundness is here of an electromagnetic origin in the sense that it depends on the ratio between the specific volume-divergence of a galaxy and its total magnetic flux. The hypothesis further implies that the number of spiral arms is justtwice as that of magnetic flux quanta a galaxy possesses; the observed preponderance of two-armed spirals then simply reflects the fact that most galaxies carry single flux quantum which is energetically favourable for the vorto-sources (-sinks) whose disk-to-bulge radius ratio > 1. The latter property also leads to the process of galaxyfragmentation in the sense that a galaxy endowed withp magnetic flux quanta should fission into the topologically equivalent configuration consisting ofp singly-quantized galaxies.A unique possibility to test our model is provided by physically paired galaxies. Considering the simplest configuration consisting of spirals lying in the same plane and having equal in magnitude fluxes and volume-divergences we distinguish four topologically different distributions of the Higgs field phase which fairly well capture observed morphologies exhibited by double galaxies; we find, in particular, that of most frequent occurrence seem to be couples with anti-parallel orientation of magnetic field. Finally, we address the question of the periodicity in the distribution of galaxy redshifts and show that a discrete-valuedness of themass of spiral galaxies resulting from our model may serve as a starting point to solve this puzzling effect.  相似文献

We present new observations at three frequencies (326, 615 and 1281 MHz) of the radio lobe spiral galaxy, NGC 3079, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. These observations are consistent with previous data obtained at other telescopes and reveal the structure of the nuclear radio lobes in exquisite detail. In addition, new features are observed, some with H  i counterparts, showing broad-scale radio continuum emission and extensions. The galaxy is surrounded by a radio halo that is at least 4.8 kpc in height. Two giant radio extensions/loops are seen on either side of the galaxy out to ∼11 kpc from the major axis, only slightly offset from the direction of the smaller nuclear radio lobes. If these are associated with the nuclear outflow, then the galaxy has experienced episodic nuclear activity. Emission along the southern major axis suggests motion through a local intergalactic medium (not yet detected), and it may be that NGC 3079 is itself creating this local intergalactic gas via outflows. We also present maps of the minimum energy parameters for this galaxy, including cosmic ray energy density, electron diffusion length, magnetic field strength, particle lifetime and power.  相似文献

The problem of the change in gravitational energy of a colliding galaxy due to tidal effects is considered. The change in the internal energy, the mass of escaping matter and the change in the mean radius of the test galaxy have been estimated for a relative velocity of 1000 km s–1 for three distances of closest approach for the following four cases: (a) both galaxies centrally concentrated, (b) both galaxies homogeneous, (c) test galaxy centrally concentrated, field galaxy homogeneous, and (d) test galaxy homogeneous, field galaxy centrally concentrated. The masses and radii of the two galaxies are taken as 1011 M and 10 kpc respectively. For simplicity, the galaxies are assumed to be spherically symmetric and the distribution of mass within a centrally concentrated galaxy is assumed to be that of a polytrope of indexn=4. The results also provide estimates for the minimum relative velocity a galaxy must have in order that it may not be captured by another to form a double system. It has been found that normally a relative velocity of less than about 500 km s–1 will lead to the formation of a double galaxy by tidal capture. In the case of a head-on collision between two centrally concentrated galaxies even a relative velocity of about 1000 km s–1 is small enough for tidal capture. The changes in the structure of the galaxies for relative velocities equal to velocity of escape are also indicated. These results show that there is no escape of matter from the test galaxy in cases (b) and (c). In the case (a) the escape of matter can be as high as 4% of the total mass. The head-on collision between galaxies are normally not accompanied by any escape of matter. All the gain in the internal energy of galaxies during such collisions results in increase in their dimensions. The fractional increase in the mean radius of the test galaxy in the head-on collision is 1.5 in the case (a), 3.2 in the case (b) and 0.01 in the case (c). In the case (d) the test galaxy will be disrupted by the tidal forces.  相似文献

We present stellar photometry of two HST/WFPC2 fields situated at the far periphery of the poststarburst galaxy NGC 1569. Their F606W and F814W images have been taken from the HST data archive. Judging by the obtained color-magnitude diagrams, we suggest presence of the old disk population (old red giants) of NGC 1569, which extends as far as Field I at 6 kpc from the galaxy center. We use the tip of the red giant branch to estimate the galaxy distance. There are two possible solutions, one leading to a short distance, D = 1.95 ± 0.2 Mpc, and the other one to a longer distance, D = 2.8 ± 0.2 Mpc.  相似文献
