Summary Following a recent hypothesis on the role of activated sodium chloride particles as possible condensation and sublimation nuclei, an analysis of data given byC. Junge on the chemical composition of aerosols, is made. It is established that all reported giant nuclei fall into three distinct categories of composition and that within each of these categories the ratio of the sums of anions to the sums of cations for constituents for which analyses were made, remains remarkably constant throughout the days of sampling, and for both geographic positions at which sampling has been carried out. A dependence of the hydroxide-carbonate content, on that of nitrate is also indicated in the «alkaline» nuclei. The system is treated as a saturated solution, and it is shown by the procedure of continuous variations that singularities occur at particular ratios of the prevalent chemical groups in solution, possibly indicating formation of complex species. This, together with the presence of double salts in the solid phase may be partly the reason for the constancy of ratio of sums in the groups of particles studied byJunge, while the grouping itself may depend on the origin and subsequent transformations of the particles.Parts of this paper were presented at the 174-th National Meeting of the American Meteorological Society, on the 29-th of January, 1959, in New York.  相似文献

Summary Over the past several years, the University of Chicago has conducted a program of research into the physics and chemistry of cumulus cloud precipitation. From these measurements it has been possible to isolate the sublimation-coalescence mechanism (Bergeron process) from the condensation-coalescence mechanism and to estimate the relative role of each process in the formation of rain n cumulus clouds. It is found that size of cloud capable of raining is a strong function of geography, that the environment of the cloud is very important in determining the probability of rain and that liquid water content is one of the most important within-cloud parameters.An essential part of the research concerned cloud treatment. Definite, positive treatment effects were demonstrated for rain initiation through coalescence using water spray. No effects were detectable from dry ice seeding of subcooled clouds, although any such effects may have been obscured by sample size (27 cloud pairs).Text of paper presented before Physical Society and Royal Meteorological Society Joint Conference on Cloud Physics, London, England, Jan. 4–5, 1956. The seismic analysis of long-span bridges subjected to multiple ground excitations is an important problem.The conventional response spectrum method neglects the spatial effects of ground motion, and therefore may result in questionable conclusions. The random vibration approach has been regarded as more reliable. Unfortunately, so far,computational difficulties have not yet been satisfactorily resolved. In this paper, an accurate and efficient random vibration approach -- pseudo excitation method (PEM), by which the above difficulties are overcome, is presented. It has been successfully used in the three dimensional seismic analysis of a number of long-span bridges with thousands of degrees of freedom and dozens of supports. The numerical results of a typical bridge show that the seismic spatial effects, particularly the wave passage effect, are sometimes quite important in evaluating the safety of long-span bridges.  相似文献

Neural networks are being used to construct meta-models in numerical simulation of structures. In addition to network structures and training algorithms, training samples also greatly affect the accuracy of neural network models. In this paper, some existing main sampling techniques are evaluated, including techniques based on experimental design theory,random selection, and rotating sampling. First, advantages and disadvantages of each technique are reviewed. Then, seven techniques are used to generate samples for training radial neural networks models for two benchmarks: an antenna model and an aircraft model. Results show that the uniform design, in which the number of samples and mean square error network models are considered, is the best sampling technique for neural network based meta-model building.  相似文献

Summary This study presents the focal mechanism solutions of four South American earth-quakes. These solutions have been determined using the sign of the initial motion ofP wave, and the polarization angle ofS wave. A regional study of the strike of the fault plane, the direction of motion, and the regional stress pattern has been made in which the focal mechanism solutions determined byStauder andBollinger were also used.  相似文献

Summary Regional variations have been indicated in the slope of theP travel-time curve in the shadow zone of the earth's core. Further study is needed since the uncertainties of the slope are large, especially for the observations from North American stations. There is no significant difference between themean slope of theP travel-time curve in the 95°102.9 range and those obtained byJeffreys, andJeffreys andBullen. However, there is a significant difference between themean slope in the 103° to 135° range as obtained in this study, and those obtained byJeffreys andBullen, and in a later revision byJeffreys. Themean travel-time curve ofP in the shadow zone of the earth's core should be lowered. A trial travel-time table is given with amean slope of 4.41 sec/deg. This table is in close agreement with the times obtained byGutenberg andRichter, and with the trial travel-times ofLehmann. Under the assumption of diffraction the longitudinal wave velocity has been determined to be 13.7 km/sec at the core-mantle boundary.This paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Seismological Society of America Reno, Nevada, 1966.  相似文献

Summary The significant correlation coefficient between the terrestial heat flow and thermal conductivity computed from the continental heat flow data byHorai andNur [1]2) may be explained as a natural consequence of terrestrial heat flow through a random medium. The theory predicts a value of 0.40 for the correlation coefficient. A simple statistical test shows that the majority of the computed coefficients belong to the statistical population whose mean is equal to the theoretical correlation coefficient. There are, however, a few observations of unsually high correlation coefficient which cannot be explained by the above hypothesis.  相似文献

Summary In this paper an attempt has been made to analyse the World shallow focus earth-quakes by the method ofGutenberg andRichter. Frequency-magnitude analysis of various earthquakes indicate that in the relation logN=a–b M, the ratio (b/a)–1 satisfies fairly well the seismicity of a region and it is felt that this ratio may be used as a measure of seismicity for a given region.  相似文献

Summary The present paper deals with the inverse polarization of rocks. At present there are two schools of thought to explain the inverse polarization. On the one hand, it is assumed that the geomagnetic field might have been reversed in those periods, when the rock formations took place. On the other it is advocated that it might be due to some intrinsic property of the rocks. To distinguish between the two theories, the author has studied the thermal demagnetization of a large number of rock samples from the Isle of Mull and has come to the conclusion that the inverse polarization is not due to an intrinsic property of the rocks as suggested byNéel, but to the reversal of the geomagnetic field. Some experimental details are also described in the paper.  相似文献

Two uplift episodes have recently been recorded at Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic region near Naples (south-central Italy). The first episode occurred in 1970 and lasted up to 1972; the second has begun at the end of 1982 and is still in progress.An attempt to model the ground deformations which occurred during the 1970–1972 event is made in this paper. The source has been assumed to be a two-dimensional fluid-filled fracture, similar to a sill. A good fit with experimental data has been obtained for a short (1–2 km long) shallow (3 km deep) source and a driving pressure ranging from 60 to 210 bars. Rigidity values have been fixed at 3.5–4.0 × 1010 c.g.s., with Poisson ratio equal to 0.3.This solution which differs from previous approaches byMogi (1958) andWalsh andDecker (1971) is non-unique, but the present results are in good agreement with observed horizontal and vertical displacements. Notwithstanding the oversimplification made in assuming a homogeneous elastic semi-infinite medium, the predicted stress field seems to be in agreement with the fault-plane solutions and the pattern of epicenters determined for the uplift-seismic swarm episode that is still in progress.  相似文献

Estimation of in-situ hydraulic diffusivity of rock masses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A method of estimating in-situ hydraulic diffusivity of rock masses by means of well-injection history and frequency of induced seismicity is presented. The method is based on the diffusion of injected fluid from a spherical cavity in a poroelastic half-space and the effective stress theory, as proposed byTerzaghi (1925, 1936) andHubbert andRubey (1959). Application of the method to two different regions, one in western New York and the other in Japan, resulted in estimated diffusivities of the order 103 and 104 cm2/sec, respectively. These values lie within the range of published estimates of in-situ diffusivity by other means, a summary of which is presented in tabular form. The calculated diffusivities suggest that the characteristic time of fluid diffusion is close to 0.1, rather than unity, as is sometimes assumed in the literature.  相似文献

Summary The importance ofStefan's flow by collection of insoluble aerosol particles on the surface of the evaporating droplets by condensation has recently been emphasized mainly in connection with the possible wash-out mechanism in the atmosphere. A simple theory is deduced for the collection efficiency of insoluble particles on droplets under theStefan's force and a comparision is made with the binding of aerosol particles byBrown's motion and microturbulence of air flow. Summary The anomalies in relativistic theory resulting from the infinities present in Riemannian geometry as used by Einstein are discussed and a better solution proposed by introducing a discrete and indivisible time unit. In considering the approach of non-simultaneity, as recently published in this Journal (Thyssen-Bornemisza andGrayson [11]), all infinities are assumed eliminated in our universe. Summary A series of paired explosions in a salt mine near Winnfield, Louisiana, has been conducted to test a theory by Dr.A. L. Latter concerning seismic decoupling by underground cavities. The theory predicted a decoupling of about 100. Free-field and surface measurements from an explosion in either a 6-ft-or a 15-ft-radius spherical cavity were compared with similar measurements from a completely tamped explosion. Shot sizes were from 20 Ib up to a few tons. Surface measurements were made out to 100 km and covered the frequency range from 0.5 to 100 cps. The experiment confirmed that decoupling does occur. The actual decoupling factor as a function of frequency is presented and compared with theLatter theory.Presented at the international meeting of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics at Helsinki, July 27, 1960.  相似文献

Tidal records at Hanasaki, southeastern Hokkaido, are analysed to clarify the post-seismic crustal vertical movement in the 1973 Nemuro-oki, Japan, earthquake. The result shows that the post-seismic uplift, as speculated byKasahara (1975), terminated in late 1975 and reverted to the previous rate of rapid subsidence of about 1 cm/yr. Ceasing of the post-seismic uplift, which occurred much earlier than previously speculated, could be explained by supplementary mechanisms, such as frictional resistance against creeping at the fault surface. This unexpected mode of movement, however, raises a new question about the accumulation of tectonic movements in this district. Since the subsidence rate extrapolated from geomorphological data for the past several thousand years is almost one order of magnitude lower than the recent rate as mentioned above, we have to provide some alternative explanation for the discrepancy between the two rates. In other words, simple repetition of co-, post- and inter-seismic movements in seismic cycles due to plate subduction, must be modified in this district. Several possible modifications to the subduction process are suggested, and a brief discussion of vertical movements expected in each case is given.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Messungen der Gefrierkernkonzentration während der Jahre 1957 und 1958 zeigten im Verlauf des Monats Januar markante Spitzenwerte, die zeitlich mit den vonE.G. Bowen vorhergesagten Maxima übereinstimmten. Da es große Schwierigkeiten bereitet, das Auftreten dieser Maxima durch die «Meteorstaubhypothese» zu erklären, wird auf Umstellungen der Zirkulation der Atmosphäre im Januar hingewiesen, die möglicherweise diese Schwankungen der Gefrierkernkonzentration auslösen können.
Summary Investigations on freezing nuclei show characteristic anomalies of the concentration during January 1957 and 1958. These anomalies fit in the schedule predicted byE.G. Bowen for the occurrence of high values of freezing nuclei. Since the explanation on the basis of the meteor-dust theory appears difficult, fluctuations of the atmospheric circulation during January may be responsible for the peak-values of the freezing nuclei concentration.

Summary Following a suggestion ofJ. G. Brown of regarding the local variation of the earth's electric field at land-stations as mainly caused by the cycle of turbulence, convection, and subsidence the problem of the double-period of the daily variation of the earth's electric field has been numerically solved. By computed values of the daily variation of the «Austauschkoeffizient», an exact measure of atmospheric turbulence, basing on temperature observations of Leafield (England) for clear days, the daily variation of nuclei has been computed for; thus getting additionally the daily variation of ions, conductivity, and local potential-gradient. Combining this computed variation of the potential-gradient and the unitary variation of the earth's field over oceans shows a double-period (local time) of the potential-gradient of the earth's electric field at land-stations. Thus the problem of the double-period of the daily variation of the earth's electric field has been reduced to one of a single-period which cannot be explained by the «Austausch».
